Carnival
This year’s carnival is on June 16th and many acts and attractions have been booked to entertain all the family for this annual event.
This year’s princesses are now getting excited after being selected to lead the carnival in this year’s parade.
In the picture are, left to right. Laureen Watkiss (11), Libby Hawskell (8), Kayla Botfield (9) and Daisy Scarlett Hughes (5). The girls have been chosen from the two Bewdley Junior Schools.
The main atraction of this year’s Carnival is Joseph Peace and his Fire Stunt Spectacular. This totally unique act with comedy banter and audience response is a hit with the crowds. His act involves him leaping through a wall of fire on a BMX bike wearing nothing but frilly gold shorts. Joining him on this exciting day will be his wife Tsubi Du, a experienced stilt walker. Tsubi creates amazing stilt characters including Z Girl and Lady G part giraffe part lady on safari.
The parade still has room for another band. It is always led by Bewdley Girl and Scout Band, but we would be interested if another band would like to join in the parade.
If anybody is interested in entering a float or a walking group, you still have time to enter.
For more information please ring Sue on 01299 401841.

The Bridge is the community voice of Bewdley
It is free and delivered by volunteers to more than 4,600 homes every month
In case you’re wondering what that photo’s doing up at the top, I thought I’d include it to spite the rest of the Bridge team who pride themselves on staying well out of the spotlight. That’ll teach them they can’t mess with me. Not that it will do, of course; they’re an independent-minded crew. We are having an annual meal together by way of celebrating another twelve copies of the magazine successfully produced. Although we meet every month to discuss next time’s magazine, we don’t actually see very much of each other; electronics ensures that just about everything can be done in one’s home in front of a computer.
Fortunately, there are still plenty of things that go on away from that demanding machine. I’ve just been reading the emails containing next month’s articles and as always, marvel at what Bewdley gets up to quite regularly and without assistance from the Big Society, Big Brother or even Big Business. From Egyptian tomb-dwelling Brownies to Olympic torchbearers, to pluck just two events, there is truly a background hum of things going on.
Now, I’m not a great fan of Instant Wisdom, be it reproduced on tea-towel, coffee mug or t-shirt. But having just finished a book about British history of the last 100 years, I came across this snippet which I think perfectly sums up what I think we value in our town: “May I not pass the normal day by in quest of some rare and perfect tomorrow”. Here’s to a May full of normal days!

Reputations
Community News
The Oxford dictionary states that a reputation is “A perception of something or someone heavily influenced not only by the actions they perform, but also from the word of mouth”. So, in a small town like Bewdley, you would think reputations travel fast! It’s fair to say negative reputations travel the quickest: Whose front lawn isn’t looking as green as it used to… who broke up with who... and did you hear about the child at number 21?! Saying this though… I haven’t heard many negative “reputations” about anyone or anything recently…especially about the residents of our valley surrounded town. It’s nice to know that when people are gossiping, which people in Bewdley do, and are known for, they’re often not discussing the “Ins and outs” of peoples lives, but are actually talking about what a great place Bewdley is! From ages 1 to 90, Bewdley is, in general, a greatly exciting town with so much going on! It could be the appearance of our town, the polite workforce, or here’s a thought…young people, that are helping Bewdley keep up its sweet reputation. It could be the many town awards we have, or even the recent glowing OFSTED inspection report Bewdley School had last month, which is keeping a positive image in people’s minds about Bewdley, who knows. I’ll let you go and decide… Chris D Salter

These are aspects to be included in the talk, which will start at 7.35 for 7.50 in Wribbenhall Community Centre, Shaw Hedge Road. Entrance is £1.50 to include refreshments. All welcome. More memories of an Excise Officer
Community News
I came to Bewdley in 1958 to take over as the Excise Officer for the western half of Kidderminster, Bewdley and Bridgnorth plus the country between these towns. I was recently acting as steward for the exhibition marking the 40th anniversary of the Museum Society, and memories were re-kindled by the sight of a few brass weights salvaged from the Bewdley Brass Foundry. This was run by the Exley brothers, and part of my job was to visit it every three months to check on their Purchase Tax returns. Sadly the Foundry closed in 1964.
I also visited Beaulieu Cake Decorations factory by the riverside to check their repayment of duty (known as drawback) on the sugar content of their exports (there was at that time quite a large duty on beet sugar). I also visited the nearby Garden Cinema run by Mr. Castles (entertainments duty). I had a small office at the beet sugar factory in addition to the town office. Once a year, I had to visit the cellars of over a hundred pubs in the area to check that the publicans were not watering the beer or “improving” it by adding sugar.
The only publicans still brewing their own beer in the area were Harry Richards of the Old Parkers Arms in Kidderminster and the Hen and Chickens in Bridgnorth, but there were in the cellar of the White Swan some large vats previously used for wine making. Sadly the Excise job virtually ceased to exist with the advent of Value Added Tax in 1972, but that is quite another story! George Billinge.

Candles: New from Old
These candles are made from remnants of used candles - the stubs, shells of large candles and tea light remains. I melt these down, strain them to remove dirty, smoky residues, pour into moulds, and they transform into wonderful new candles. The photo shows some of the candles I made recently; the small yellow candle is made from beeswax, smells amazing, burns slowly and has a very pure flame.
So why not turn out your candle remains and then I can continue making candles? There is a collecting box in St. Anne’s Church vestibule for your candle wax. Thank you. Sheila Lowe

Well Done 1st Wribbenhall Brownies
Community News
As their contribution to the County Challenge “Making a difference in the Community”, the 1st Wribbenhall Brownies decided that they would raise money for the Wribbenhall Parish Room renovation, as this is where they meet. The highlight of the evening was entertainment written, dressed and organized by the Brownies. It was an inspiration to watch the enthusiasm and professionalism of these young people, who produced a very polished performance. They raised £130, which was a wonderful effort by only 10 youngsters aged between 7 and 10 years of age.
This small group meet on a Friday evening from 6.15pm until 7.45pm. They urgently need more girls to join them as they learn and have fun together under the eye of Carol Allen, their Brown Owl. For further details contact Carol 01886 888154.
Wribbenhall Parish Room continues to raise money for the renovation of the hall, so that all can enjoy this facility which was given to the Community almost 100 years ago. The contribution from the Brownies is most welcome and will have a special place when our list of donations is completed.
Did You Know? When you read “Ribbesford Church was used during the World War II as a base for the Free French”, I’m sure you imagine a beautiful old establishment, and you wouldn’t be far wrong. That is, of course, if you ignore the bullet holes in the weathervane.
Yes, if you were to take a stroll down to the Ribbesford parish today, and look up at the high tower you will indeed see holes through the top of the iron weather vane.
This is because members of the free French army used this for target practice! Proof? Take a look at these photos!

Sports Report - Joe Turner Semi Final Bewdley v Studley
Bewdley started off the game strongly against higher league Studley. Chris Seekings crossed the ball into the box and hit Studley’s Simon Fitter, scoring an own goal. Studley pushed for a leveller with Matthew Collins’ 30-yard screamer just going wide, but Studley could not find the net. However, Chris Seekings made it 2-0 for Bewdley on the hour mark, slotting it home past Perry Cox.
The visitors pushed in the last 10 minutes but could not break Bewdley down. Jamie Bailey was shown a straight red for a foul on Bewdley keeper Darren Steadman and Bewdley ended the game with a well deserved 2-0 win.
This is the third time Bewdley have reached the finals, and are hoping to get their second win.

Common or Garden
Community News
Unfortunately the science or art of gardening isn’t as common as it once was and many people lack the skills or experience to turn their plot of land, however large or small, into a garden. Yet there is a very special satisfaction in working with nature to grow flowers, fruit and vegetables, and for minimal expense you can produce really tasty and healthy food for the family.
Volunteers from Transition Bewdley hope to encourage those wondering where to start and introduce a new generation to the joys of “growing their own” on May 7th at Bewdley Museum and Jubilee Gardens. The Family Gardening Event is part of the “Discover Bewdley” weekend, and offers growing vegetables in unusual (and free) containers, gardening in a small space, help with making compost, and vegetable-themed stories! So come along and get some dirt under your finger nails!

The Friends of Bewdley Museum are celebrating 40 years since the museum opened its doors for the first time. It is an ideal time to reflect on the words of our founding father Stephen Quayle and his visionary statement; “We intend to show people, who have only known Bewdley as a sleepy backwater, what a busy and important centre it was. The museum will become the focal point of the town and we hope it will attract visitors and stimulate trade. The opening is just a beginning. There is scope for further improvements and extensions to the museum. As a living centre we want it to be used for cultural activities by local people and those who wish to carry out research into the town’s history”.
This is as relevant today as it was 40 years ago. It would be hard to imagine Bewdley without its museum and the 140,000 plus visitors who now flow through each year. There was a time when closure was a definite possibility, but now we all are able to work together to help keep the museum and the town thriving.
I wish I could count the number of times people stop me and say that they really keep meaning to join The Friends. This, our 40th year, is the perfect time to do this; forms can be collected from the museum or email us at fobmuseum@tiscali.co.uk. You can also follow us on face book – I wonder what Stephen would have made of that – I hope he too would have embraced the new methods of communication. Time of course does not stand still and there are already plans in place to make further improvements to the site. Bewdley Museum intends to continue with its motto of ‘A SURPRISE AROUND EVERY CORNER’ for many years to come. Find out more about us in the exhibition “40 Years On”, which runs until May 20th in the Wyre Forest Gallery in the museum. There is plenty to see. Why not come and meet us at our AGM on Thursday May 31st, Bewdley Baptist Church at 7.30pm – we would love to see you there! So, have you joined us yet?

Tails of a Veterinary Practice
life at Riverside Vets as seen by Gavin the practice cat.
Hello to you all, my name is Gavin and I am the practice cat at Riverside Veterinary Clinic in Bewdley.
You may have seen and heard recently about a new project that my humans have set up. They have been telling me for a while about the poor geese and swans on the river that suffer from ‘angel wing’. This is a condition where the bones of the wings are malformed and so the birds are not able to fly. It happens because of an unbalanced diet and can be very serious, as it stops the birds from flying away from danger. A number of the birds on the river here in Bewdley suffer from the condition and my humans frequently get calls from concerned people reporting bird with ‘broken wings’. All too often these turn out to be birds with angel wing and there is nothing my humans can do for them.
A little bit of bread and chips now and then does not harm the swans and geese, but here in Bewdley, because so many lovely people feed them this diet, this is why their diet becomes unbalanced. To improve this situation, my humans have got some good balanced food to feed the birds on the river. At the same time they are raising money for the Swan rescue charity, who does a lot of good work for our river birds. You can get some healthy food and more information from my humans and I may also be on hand to offer some advice. Gavin.
Jazz At Rock.
On Saturday, 26th May, the Sussex Jazz Kings will be playing in Rock Village Hall from 8 till late.
This is an excellent 6 - piece traditional New Orleans style band. They rank as my personal favourite jazz band, so do come along to listen or to “strut your stuff”- I guarantee you will not be disappointed. We are planning to provide a supper at the event and tickets will be modestly priced at £10. Phone Len Pitman on 01299832294 for any other information or to reserve your tickets.

We celebrate our guild's birthday in May by going out for a meal but ladies are invited to our meeting on June 24th when our speaker is from Albrighton Pottery with a talk on 'Fun with Clay'. The President welcomed visitors to the March meeting. Plans were in hand for outings and craft meetings, also a coffee morning at her home.
After tea, David Strukett gave us a brief history of Hand Bells and their manufacture and tuning. Liz Strukett and her team of ringers from the U.3.A. entertained us with tunes we all remembered and could sing along to. Volunteers were shown how to read the music and played some catchy tunes. They were thanked for such an enjoyable afternoon and for keeping alive folk music not often heard today.
WI meets at Elim Riverside Church, Dog Lane Bewdley on the 2nd Monday of each month at 2pm.
All are welcome. Contact telephone numbers 01299 401009 and 404474.
We had an excellent speaker in March: Andrew Lound spoke on “Titanic – The Midlands Connection”. The talk took the form of a film, which contained a wealth of photographs old and new, presenting the subject in an original way. Mr. Lound dressed up in naval uniform to set the scene. The Midlands industrial companies had contributed many essential pieces of equipment for the ship, and the speaker had a detailed knowledge of this. The Mercure Hotel provided a superb meal to complement a very successful meeting.
The AGM is being held on 2nd May and on 30th May there will be a talk on “Children’s Games”. All ladies are welcome to attend and further information is available by ringing 400363.

Dear Editor,
Living on High Street is a pleasure and a privilege - it is a historic part of our beautiful town. Unfortunately, for quite a while now people have been allowing their dogs to foul the pavements. The problem also extends to Lax Lane. This is dirty and a health hazard for children - those who live on the street and those coming up and down the street for Brownies, Cubs and toddler group. At night you can't spot it...well, I won't go on - you know who you are! From "Disgusted of High Street"

TOWN COUNCIL NEWS
TOWN COUNCIL MEETING HELD ON 2ND APRIL 2012
Bewdley Medical Centre There were more members in the public gallery than usual for this meeting chiefly on account of concerns over the possible relocation of the medical centre from Load Street to a site next to All Saints Church on Kidderminster Road in Wribbenhall. Councillors felt that as this was an issue that should be given a broader airing, it was right to convene a special public meeting when all parties could be given an opportunity of stating their positions including local traders but importantly as well all patients. Arrangements will be put in hand. Town Council for Kidderminster Unlike Bewdley and Stouport, Kidderminster does not have a Town Council - though it has a Mayor – and so does not provide any services direct. In response to a request from the Kidderminster Charter Trustees who support the Mayor but have no other powers, Bewdley Council thought it only fair with much talk of “localism” that Kidderminster should elect its own Council as well.
Ribbesford By coincidence another topic relating to representing local people cropped up concerning residents in Ribbesford who also at present do not have a Parish Council. There was a proposal that Ribbesford should be incorporated into Rock Parish. Councillors heard that residents living in the historic part of Ribbesford would much prefer to be linked to Bewdley than Rock whereas those living on the Little Lakes caravan park might prefer to be linked to Rock. Councillors agreed to ask the District Council if Ribbesford could be split to satisfy both groups. Severnside South – Civic Space The Council supported the long awaited introduction by the County Council of double yellow lines along a short length of road by the Civic Space, which technically at present has no restriction. Future Town Council meetings Future Town Council meetings held at The Guildhall on Mondays (except where indicated) at 7.30pm are: 8th May (Tuesday). 6th June (Wednesday) and 2nd July. The Annual Meeting of the Town Council (when the new Mayor is elected) will take place on Friday 11th May at 7.00pm Minutes of Town Council and Planning Committee Meetings are posted on the Notice Boards outside the Mayor’s Parlour, in the Guildhall Entrance and Load Street Car Park. They are also available at the Library and at the Town Clerk’s Office and on the Town Council’s page of www.bewdley.org.uk. TOWN COUNCIL NEWS IS PRODUCED AND PUBLISHED BY BEWDLEY TOWN COUNCIL

Be a leading light!
On Thursday 24th May, Bewdley residents and businesses are in for a once in a lifetime experience as the Olympic Torch takes a journey through the Wyre Forest District. It’s time to dig out your best red white and blue outfits and create homemade flags to wave along the route.
It would be great to see shop windows dressed to mark the occasion with celebratory offers for locals and visitors to enjoy. The torch will ride on the Severn Valley Railway and stop to enjoy the sights of the Safari Park as it passes through. It will enter Bewdley from Far Forest at 3.08 pm and go down into the town via B4190 and along Load Street. The Flame will then cross the River Severn and head out of Bewdley on the Kidderminster Road before catching a ride on the Severn Valley Railway from Bewdley Station at 3.50 pm.
School children will be accompanying the Flame on this part of the trip on the train. During the journey to Kidderminster, the specially commissioned steam locomotive will stop at the Safari Park by the elephant enclosure, so they too share the moment!
When the Olympic Flame reaches the Severn Valley Railway Station in Kidderminster at 4.35 pm, the torchbearers will then take it on the rest of its journey through the town, down Comberton Hill, Green Street and out onto the Worcester Road at 5.15 pm.
There are plans underway for entertainment in the town before and after the Torch relay and hopefully a choir in the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Gardens. It promises to be a memorable occasion, so get cracking now on your plans to make this day as special as possible for Bewdley. For more information visit www.wyreforestdc.gov.uk/olympics

as “roding”. They fly a circular route at dusk making some very odd noises. I have to quote Hickin here:
“..every so often the wing beats miss and at that precise moment a peculiar sound is uttered by the bird and variously described as a croak or a groan followed by a highpitched whistle. Whereas the hen makes the whistle on occasion, she never groans or croaks!”
One of the strangest feathered inhabitants of the Wyre Forest is the woodcock. People familiar with the quieter parts of the forest, especially its little stream valleys, may occasionally see them in flight but it would take a very sharp eye indeed to see them on the ground. Their plumage of mottled browns and greys is a perfect camouflage amongst dead oak leaves in the scrapes on the ground which form their nests. Their long beaks are adapted to probing soft mud for worms and other invertebrates, which are slurped up without taking the beak out of the ground. In “The natural history of an English forest” Norman Hickin describes watching woodcock rising up from the forest at dusk to come past his cottage on their way to feed in wet ground further afield. My only sighting was when I was with a group of school children along the stream that forms the Forestry Commission’s eastern boundary between New Parks and Lord’s Yard Coppice and, to our amazement, a woodcock came flying up the valley through our group at shoulder height. That flight was silent, but at this time of the year the males make a special display flight known
For the more familiar, but no less remarkable, bird sounds you really should join the Dawn Chorus Walk on May 5th (see below). It’s worth making the effort to rise early for an unforgettable experience.
