SVR’s 40’s Weekend
It was too much to expect sunshine for Severn Valley's Forties Weekend, but as you can see from Gary's photos of the occasion, there was plenty to smile about with some wonderful clothes and hairstyles to match the era.

The Bridge is the community voice of Bewdley
It is free and delivered by volunteers to more than 4,600 homes every month
August? Don’t make me laugh. I’m writing this as the rain beats against the window pane and I sit at the computer with a rug over my knees because it’s so cold. They’re promising a wet August too. I blame St Anne’s for that performance of Noah’s Flood earlier in the year. Still, as I said last month, if I write about the previous month’s weather in my editorial it’s the signal for it to be all wrong by the time you read it. Here’s hoping, anyway.
Another “Perhaps I should have kept quiet” happened to me at the beginning of last month. I seem to have been banging on about talking to each other and communication in general in the past few editorials. My comeuppance came in the form of a rail journey back from Birmingham. It was 5.00 so the carriage was full to bursting and I was lucky to get a seat next to an ample young woman who was in full flood on her mobile. “It’s not acceptable!” she enunciated. “Ninety years old and THEY JUST LEFT HIM!” She then proceeded to fill in the story all the way from Snow Hill to Stourbridge. Her fellow passengers were enthralled. We were mostly sitting with books in our laps but I noticed that no-one turned any pages. When the lady finally left us we exchanged grins and confessed that we’d hardly missed a word. We didn’t approve of all her decisions but could have given informed views on most of them. Then a thought struck me. Perhaps she was doing her equivalent of what I’ve done in the past. Do you think she made it all up? Margaret

Bewdley Methodist Church High Street The Knit and Natter group will be making their annual visit to Great Witley Church and Tearooms on Thursday afternoon 9th August. On the 18th August we will be holding a Vintage Tea Party, when it is hoped some of our older members will be sharing with us their experiences of what their lives were like when they were younger. We once again congratulate Allen Birch (one of our oldest members) on climbing Mount Snowdon at the grand old age of 92. This time he will be raising money for the Air Ambulance. Well done!

Bewdley’s website is growing
Following an Awards for All grant last year, Bewdley Development Trust has been working on a re-developed town website. The original site generated lots of interest but had become too complicated and wordy, and the management system behind it had begun to break down.
After a lot of consultation a brief was agreed that would focus on simplifying the site and providing strong visual images.
The new site also allows local groups and organisations to put their own events in the Local Events section of the site. Just click onto the Local Events and then click on the ‘add your own event’ link in the text. All items submitted then come to Ellie at BDT for approval, and are published on the website, within 3 working days.
Please get in touch if you would like to submit news stories or items for other parts of the site. Contact Ellie on 01299 405516 or info@bewdley.org.uk or complete the contact form on the website.
If you are a local business or community group, please also make sure we have your details.
There is still more to do, but we hope you like the look and feel of the new site. We have certainly had positive responses both from local people and from Bewdley fans as far away as Australia! Happy browsing! Peter Miller

Although the weather doesn’t feel like summer here, many people will be heading off for the sun over the summer holiday period. By enjoying the sun safely, taking care not to burn and avoiding sunbeds, you can reduce your risk of developing skin cancer. How to be smart in the sun:
Use shade, clothing and at least factor 15 sunscreen to protect yourself from sunburn Spend time in the shade between 11 and 3
Cover up with a T shirt, hat and sunglasses
Use sunscreen that is at least factor 15, apply generously and regularly
Avoid sunbeds, the intensity of some of the UV rays they give off can be 10 times higher than that of the midday sun
Skin cancer is the second most common cancer in young people but the risk still increases with age. If you notice any change in colour, size or moles becoming asymmetrical or blurred at the edges it is worth getting your skin checked.

Neighbourhood Watch
Community News
The Neighbourhood Watch system is now some 30 years old and is operating successfully throughout the United Kingdom. People work together to try to keep their communities crime free with help from the Police and Community Support Officers within their local area.
What is required? Each Watch area requires a co-ordinator to be the focal point for the members. The position is not onerous. The person just needs to be able to communicate well with their neighbours and pass on details of incidents when issued by the Police. If you are thinking of vigilantes patrolling neighbourhoods, this is not what Neighbourhood Watch is about. It is about being observant and noting anything you consider unusual happening within your area. This could be details of vehicles or details of individuals or even something like a window left open when a householder is known to be away.
Your observations and concerns can be passed to your co-ordinator or, if the matter is serious, contact the Police immediately using 999. Also, remember that non-emergency incidents can be reported via 101. Being in the Scheme also makes for a nice community spirit and the occasional drinks party!! Our particular Watch in Bewdley, like most others throughout the UK, was formed after a burglary. The whole of the street welcomed the initiative as people’s confidence in their security had been damaged at that point. It is important to point out that it is not required that you put yourself in any danger in tackling offenders. This is not a function of Neighbourhood Watch. In an emergency situation contact the Police immediately.
For more information, or to join neighbourhood watch in the Bewdley area, email your local policing team: bewdleyandrural.lpt@westmercia.pnn.police.uk

There's no avoiding sport this summer; we've had the European football, Wimbledon and shortly the Olympics will be hitting our screens. Great for sports fans.
If, however, your experience of sport has been like mine (watching a hefty netball player pull a face as the sports teacher splits you and the other no-hoper between two teams in the interests of fairness) then all this sports mania might leave you a little cold. There are, however, lots of thing you can do apart from watch the sport, even in the appalling weather we've been having. To get you started we've set up two small displays entitled 'Sporting Mad – Or Mad with Sport?' These have a selection of books and DVDs to cater for most tastes; we've even included items for sports fans (in the interests of fairness). If all else fails you could start writing your life story. A catchy title for mine hit me the other week; 'Fifty Shades of Kay'. Sounds like a winner to me…… Kay Sanderson
Bewdley’s Stone Heritage
The fascinating story of the building stones of Bewdley is the theme for a new photographic exhibition at Bewdley Museum. It is running until August 12th, 10am - 4:30pm.
The exhibition is a result of a joint venture between the Earth Heritage Trust and Bewdley Museum. It highlights the stone built heritage of the town and the relationship between local building stones and the geology of the immediate area. During the exhibition Derek Martin of DJM Stonemasonry Ltd will be at the Museum to discuss his work and give a demonstration of his skills. Dr Peter Oliver will also conduct a two hour guided walk looking at some of the stones featured in the exhibition and John Stocks will run a photographic workshop to discuss techniques involved in photographing geological features.

The Big Ask from CTH
Community News
In your future the following events will probably happen to you – you’ll find suddenly that you have become old, infirm, physically disabled, or on your own. Add to this the complications of needing to get around – the car you love and cherish is too much of a challenge to drive safely even locally. Family members, friends or neighbours who used to offer lifts are simply absent through work, other demands or, worse still, no longer with you. The bus you could rely on has been removed from service – still, no matter, you couldn’t walk to the bus stop anyway. So, now the question of how to get to the doctor, dentist, hospital or other simple trip you used to take in your stride. Day to day routines of shopping, visiting, trips out, and holidays away change to insurmountable headaches and you are, without realising, isolated within your own home. Our Big Ask is to Ask You to consider these matters now and to offer Community Transport Helpline a little of your time as a volunteer to help those ahead of you. This charity, housed in the tower of St Anne’s Church, offers a fantastic service. It aims to provide volunteer drivers for any of the above circumstances and is a much valued service across the whole of our area. Expenses are refunded at a nationally agreed mileage rate, but your main reward is the gratitude of clients who cannot manage without us. If you would like to know more do call 01299 405832 or drop into the CTH Church office for a chat. At some point in the future you may need us too.
Guide dog Update
Pippin is now nearly 15 months old. What a pleasure she has been to 'walk' and I am dreading 17th July when she moves on to Worcester and advanced training. Staffing issues at Leamington meant she stayed with me a little longer than usual. A compliant, willing dog, eager to please, she will be trained in Worcester. During this time, she will live with boarders overnight and at weekends.
I am left with fantastic memories of her: she has visited schools, brownie groups, spent a week in Cornwall on holiday with me, supported this year's Carnival, made me laugh and, yes, I will cry when she leaves. Affectionate, loyal and gentle, she will be the perfect companion for her owner if she qualifies.
On 19th July (just time to change the bed!), puppy no. 4 arrives. Lucky is a Golden Retriever bitch and will no doubt give me little time to fret over Pippin's departure! By the time you read this we shall be out and about. We look forward to meeting everyone. Lucky is indeed lucky to be coming to Bewdley. I cannot thank everyone enough for their support over the past years. Please keep up the good work! If any shop/business/office would be willing to have a charity box for Guide Dogs, please contact me.

Thirty Years of Bewdley/Wribbenhall Ladies’ Luncheon Club
Bewdley/Wribbenhall Ladies Luncheon Club was established in 1981, based on an idea by the late Mrs. Hilda Peers, who was very well known locally. In the early days the group met at various venues, for example the George Hotel and the Mug House. Over the past thirty plus years there have been talks on almost every possible subject, so there is something for everyone. There have also been many outings, for example Buckingham Palace, various castles, gardens and numerous other places. Meals have always been included on every occasion, in the spirit of the type of group that it is. We meet monthly throughout the year, which includes open meetings. The raffles are imaginatively presented as “themes for the month”. For the past few years the meetings have been held at the Ramada Hotel, (now the Mercure Hotel). The membership has risen, and the age group is wide. We enjoy lovely meals at reasonable prices, and the general feeling is very harmonious. The group also make regular donations to charities. The officers and committee are dedicated to the continued success of the club and welcome new lady members. It is possible to attend as a visitor for the first few meetings and then there is the option of joining. Ladies wishing to come along are invited to contact the Chairman, telephone 01299 400363. At our June meeting Edward Kendrick gave us a most interesting insight into the work of the “Severn Freewheelers”. These are motor cycle volunteers who carry mainly medical emergency supplies over a large area, to where they are needed. This service is of the utmost benefit to the community. On 29th August well known local speaker Rosemary Winnall will present an illustrated talk on “A Garden for Wildlife”. All ladies are welcome to attend and are invited to ring 400363 for details of our meetings at the Mercure Hotel.
Open Views
Here in hilly Bewdley we are surrounded by wonderful views. Some lucky households have lovely views from their gardens. In a take on “Open Gardens” we at St Anne’s are holding an “Open Views” day when some of these people have generously allowed us to come and look at their view. So on Sep 9 from 11.00 to 4.00 why not come down to St Anne’s, pick up a leaflet and walk or drive around town to see what the hidden Bewdley has to offer? There is a photographic competition to enter, judged by The Bridge’s own Gary and the magazine will publish the best photos later in the year.

Tails of a Vetinary Practice
Community News
We recently had a four legged friend called Alfie staying with us at the Practice. Alfie, a cheeky black and white cat had gone A.W.O.L. just before his humans, Mr and Mrs Perkins were due to go on holiday. They were very worried and hoped he would come back soon. It later transpired when Alfie told me the story of his adventure that he had hopped into a car which took him to the other side of Kidderminster, where he soon got lost and scared .Luckily for Alfie a kind lady found him and gave him some food and kept him safe. The lady knew what to do with a lost cat and took Alfie to her local vets to see if he was micro- chipped and fortunately he was. A call was made and it was agreed that Alfie should come and stay with us until his humans returned from holiday. Mr and Mrs Perkins were delighted to be reunited with their cat and Alfie was glad to be home. Thank goodness he had been micro-chipped; goodness knows what would have become of him otherwise. Gavin (The Riverside Vets practice cat)
They Know, But do you?
In summer Bewdley welcomes many visitors in July and August, which got me thinking about thoughts and feelings people leave with after visiting our town. This inspired me to take to the streets and ask some people what they think of Bewdley. After several hours of finding people to talk to (and being brushed away by some), three main things came up; how our town looked, what’s in our town, and what the people that live here are like. All of the comments were positive. Did you know that Bewdley’s pubs are some of the highest award winners in the region, for both service and appearance? Bewdley has a very low crime rate – one that is smaller than both the national and local averages, something we should all be proud of. As a student, I’m also proud that our town’s secondary school has been the highest performing in the district for the past 5 years bar none. As a 2012 Bewdley School graduate, I can also tell you the results we are set to achieve in August are expected to rival the top performing schools in the County, and even nationally. I feel it is important Bewdley keeps the town pride we currently have as a welcoming and inviting town to visit and live in. Christopher Salter

Letters to the Editor
Dear Editor, I read with interest the Royal Encounters article in the July 2012 edition as I am interested in Bewdley's Tudor connection also. I hope you don't mind me pointing out some inaccuracies in the article regarding Catherine of Aragon. Less than six months after her marriage to Prince Arthur Catherine was a widow, and still young enough to be married again. Henry VII still had a son, Henry, (the future Henry VIII) who was much more robust and healthy than his dead older brother. The English king was interested in keeping Catherine's dowry, (she hadn't become fiancially weak) so 14 months after Prince Arthur's death she was betrothed to the future Henry VIII, who was too young to marry at the time.
Henry married Catherine in 1509, shortly after her marriage to Henry, Catherine found herself pregnant. This first child was a stillborn daughter born prematurely in January 1510, but this disappointment was soon followed by another pregnancy. Prince Henry was born on January 1, 1511 and was christened on the 5th. There were great celebrations for the birth of the young prince, but they were halted by the baby's death after 52 days of life. Catherine then had a miscarriage, followed by another short-lived son. On February 1516, she gave birth to a daughter named Mary, and this child lived. She would later be Queen Mary I ("Bloody Mary"). There were probably two more pregnancies, the last recorded in 1518.
Catherine died 7 January 1536 at Kimbolton Castle at the age of 50 so she didn't die in childbirth. Kate's Hill is said to have been given its name by the Bewdley people who observed Catherine walking in the grounds of Tickenhill Palace. Yours sincerely Robert Barbour
Community News Bewdley Festival is so pleased that the archive photo brought back many happy memories! Best wishes, Chris
Dear Editor, The mystery photo in the Bridge was taken in All Saint's Church, Wribbenhall in October 1989. This was the first year that the Severnside Dancers took part in the Festival Service. We danced to a piece called "Heenay Ma Tov" sung partly in Hebrew. It is a translation of Psalm 133 " Behold how good and pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity." The dance was based on the Margaret Morris Movement Technique and Israeli national dancing. This year will be our 24th year dancing in the festival service.
The boys and girls are now in their 30's. One of them, Jane Webb, became a professional dancer and has danced all round the world and another Claire Hathaway (nee Boulton) runs her own dance school in Stourport. Other members of the team went into car mechanics, nursing, the police force and other professions and quite a few have children of their own. It was lovely to see them altogether again. Fond memories.
Regards Joyce Campbell, Principal-Severnside School of Dancing Dear Editor, Re the Bewdley festival photo:
I think it’s Mrs Campbells dance troupe, not singers . Middle of third row I think is Ruth Ireland, second row left, the boy is Simon Key (who would be 33 now as I was at school with him) and far right the girl in the same row is Carolyn Mather. Hope this helps! Cat at Bewdley Blooms

Pieces of Wyre – Book review by Liz Obee
Community News
Are you interested in local history? Do you enjoy a good read? Then Pieces of Wyre will be just up your street!
It’s a wonderfully original concept and a well-written book in two volumes that’s a delight to read. Author and local historian, Fenella Flack, takes us on a journey around the Wyre Forest area, presenting a collection of literary pieces in prose, poetry and even play format – all based on true historical accounts and facts, illuminating town and village life in this area from as early as the 7th century through to present day. As the stories unfold they bring to life such diverse incidents as the hidden secrets of Harvington Hall, the stationing of the Free French at Ribbesford House, the development of the canals at Lower Mitton, the struggles for workers’ rights in the carpet industry in Kidderminster, fascinating family history revealed at a wedding in Arley, and the legacy to Wribbenhall from the nineteenth-century owner of Spring Grove House. Highly recommended! Now available from your local library at £6 for each volume or just £10 for the pair.
Another Day at the Hospice Shop
Our first customers today are Mr and Mrs “Bring and Buy”. They gave themselves that name as they bring in bags of beautiful donations but always buy something on their way out! Mr Bring and Buy used to be a volunteer driver for Kemp so knows only too well how much we appreciate every single donation.
Then here comes Gabby with Pippin- she needs no introduction as we all know the marvellous work she does training puppies to become Guide Dogs. Our Volunteers love a visit and Pippin all too readily laps up all the fuss and attention! What a busy morning - even the rain doesn’t keep you away!
Mary from over the bridge has just come in and we all stop to have a chat with her. She loves to tell us all about her encounters with the young people in Bewdley. They think she is “dead cool!” She is well in to her eighties so that’s quite an accolade I reckon! She missed her last bus home the other day and had heavy bags of shopping, so two young girls carried them all the way back to her house. She was so grateful to you whoever you are. A big “Thank you, girls!” Lastly, may I welcome our latest group of volunteers to the shop. We really couldn’t do what we do without you all!
P.S. A little trivia …Which novel’s last chapter opens with “Reader I married Him”

TOWN COUNCIL NEWS
TOWN COUNCIL MEETING HELD ON 2ND JULY 2012 Bewdley Library Councillors were pleased to hear that having conducted a full review, the County Council had concluded it would not be cost effective or feasible to relocate the library into the Guildhall complex and so combine it with the Tourist Information Centre and Museum. However, to achieve savings, the County Council were still looking towards getting different services under the same roof and invited ideas as to how that could be achieved. The Town Council gave the matter some preliminary thought and invite members of the public to come forward with their views. Code of Conduct Councillors agreed to accept the terms of a new code of conduct which was required to be put in place under the terms of the new Localism Act. Queensway Estate Bus Service Following a petition signed earlier in the year by large numbers of residents and lobbying by the Town Council concerned that bus services run by First no longer ran through the Estate, it was learned that the County Council had successfully been in negotiation with Whittles who had agreed to divert their existing 2A service via the Estate. Whittles have also now agreed to extend the hours of operation and improve the frequency. Habberley Road Speed Limits Having written to the County Council to ask that the speed limits should be made more consistent with fewer changes which was confusing and with signs adding to street “clutter”, the Town Council were disappointed that there seemed to be no promise of immediate change. Councillors are asking now for a meeting on site with officials from the Highways Dept to press the matter. Householders’ Boundary Hedges With all the wet weather we have endured over the past few months which has meant hedges and shrubs have really been growing well, the Town Council would ask where possible that for anyone who has a property with bushes or hedges which overhang or interfere with footpaths and passageways, to give them a trim so pedestrians can walk past safely. Future Town Council meetings
Future Town Council meetings held at The Guildhall on Mondays (except where indicated) at 7.30pm are: 6th August, 3rd September, 1st October, 5th November and 3rd December.
Minutes of Town Council and Planning Committee Meetings are posted on the Notice Boards outside the Mayor’s Parlour, in the Guildhall Entrance and Load Street Car Park. They are also available at the Library and at the Town Clerk’s Office and on the Town Council’s page of www.bewdley.org.uk

Au g u s t i n th e Fore s t
At last we can celebrate the completion of the Sensory Trail around our new Community Discovery Centre at Callow Hill. Two years ago the surroundings of the Centre were completely churned up and showing the devastation you’d expect after a major building project, but now with the help of a wildflower/grass seed mix the green has returned. We took the opportunity presented by Grow With Wyre’s Heritage Lottery Fund moneys to turn this area into a beautiful asset which could add a new dimension to visits by people of all ages and abilities. The concept behind the project was to include features, both natural and man-made, that encourage use of the senses: touch, sight, hearing and smell. (The sense of taste we’ll leave up to you – there are some nice, juicy bilberries and blackberries in the forest just now!).
The Sensory Trail will be open during Open Days (see below) and can also be booked for groups by calling the Forestry Commission’s Discovery Centre on 01299 266929.
On “Treetastic Tuesdays” and “Forest Fridays” every Tuesday and Friday throughout the Summer Holidays from 24th July until 31st August you can come and explore the Community Discovery Centre any time between 11am and 3pm. The new Wildside of Wyre Museum will also be open on these days. There will be a different children’s activity on each day available too, for a small charge. Friday 31st August - Family Dusk walk. Explore the forest as night falls. Wear warm clothes and bring a torch. 7pm to 9pm. For families with children aged 7 and over.
Cost £6 per person/£20 per family of 4. Booking essential on 01299 266929.
Saturday 29th September - Fungus Forays 10.30 to 12.30 from Earnwood, 2pm to 4pm from Hawkbatch. Cost £7. Booking essential. Sunday 30th September – Forest Discovery Day 10 to 4pm. More details to follow
Sunday 14th October - Fungus Forays 10.30 to 12.30 from Hawkbatch, 2 to 4pm from Earnwood. Cost £7. Booking essential.
This is my last forest news article written as an employee of the Forestry Commission, since I’ve decided that 19 years as an Education Officer is probably enough (especially for the teachers who come and hear the same patter and quips every year)! However, my wonderful colleagues at the Discovery Centre will continue to bring the natural world alive for countless young visitors and I’ll still be bringing you news and tales from the forest just as me!
