The BRIDGE October 2012
Community News
All of us in the Bridge team were ver y saddened last month to hear of the death of David Glenn on 22nd August after a shor t illness. He was a valued and much-loved member of our little band. Ver y few people in the town knew of his tremendous contr ibution to the magazine . When he fifirr st joined us, in response to a plea of desperation from myself ear ly in the millennium the magazine was a well regarded but modest publication. David, who has wor ked in this fifieeld for many year s took it by the scr uff of its neck and tr ansformed it. It was he who was responsible for introducing full colour photos; he who set in place the professional publishing progr amme that so improved the appear ance of the text; he who suggested to the sender of some excellent photos that he join us and become the photo editor ; most impor tantly it was David to whom I invariably turned with “What should we do about…..” questions. His patience was astonishing; he never quite gave up tr ying to show me the more arcane ar ts of typesetting. He has left a space that will be impossible to fifilll. We will miss him. Margaret, Gar y, Martin, Steve.
Garden Candles
These garden candles came from the waste candle wax some of you brought into St Anne's church over the past few months. Cased in sand, they are great for outdoor use, even this Summer, burning brightly through light breezes and soft rain. For indoor use, pillar candles shine out in various colours and finishes. Mostly I have passed them on to friends and family.
So please keep turning out your used candle stubs, night lights and wax remains and leave them in St Anne's church vestibule in the basket provided.A big Thank You to all of you who brought in your spent candle wax.The response was truly heartening!

The Bridge is the community voice of Bewdley
It is free and delivered by volunteers to more than 4,600 homes every month
Welcome to our special edition of the magazine celebrating 25 years of the Bewdley Festival. Over the years it has grown, acquired a fringe, and become an increasingly important date in Bewdley’s calendar. Read more inside.
As well as being the month when the town says goodbye to most of the tourists and hunkers down for the winter, I always think of October as a smoky month. There’s plenty to turn into a bonfire in the garden – yes, I know they’re not very environmentally friendly but they’re lots of fun - and Nature provides its own smoke in the form of misty mornings. From my garden up above the river I often see a sort of long plump pillow of mist hovering just above the water. Sometimes it’s joined by another smoky ribbon as the steam train puffs its majestic way to Northwood Halt. But enough purple prose; October is also the month when farmers and gardeners look at what they have in return for months of hard work. I can only hope it’s more than what I have to show. Honestly, if only scientists could find a way of making slugs palatable I could solve the world food problem single handed. There wouldn’t be any vegetables to serve with them; apart from three carrots and a giant lettuce my cupboard is bare. Am I bitter? Of course. At least I’m not alone with my garden disaster and thanks to the skills of others John at the Farm Shop will doubtless see me nutritiously through the winter.
Elsewhere in the magazine I have written of the news of the death last month of David Glenn. He has been a vital part of this magazine for nearly ten years and here at the Bridge we are missing him dreadfully. Our thoughts go out to all his family and friends. Margaret

Book Festival Back With A Bang
Community News
Following the success of last year’s inaugural event, Bewdley Festival Book Week is back on Tuesday October 2, 2012. Taking place just after the main Bewdley Festival, the Book Week will treat bookworms to an exciting programme including a literary lunch with crime legend PD James, creator of Inspector Adam Dalgleish. Bewdley Festival Book Week also welcomes best-selling husband and wife crime writers Nicci Gerrard and Sean French (better known under their joint pseudonym Nicci French) as well as Gaynor Arnold, whose historical novel The Girl in a Blue Dress was long-listed for the Man Booker Prize. Elkie Brooks will discuss her new autobiography, Finding My Voice, and no petrol-head should miss Di Spires memoir I Only Made The Tea, full of fascinating behind-the-scenes stories from the world of Formula 1. Local writers will also be attending, including Miranda Dickinson of Stourbridge, author of Sunday Times best-sellers Fairytale of New York, Welcome to my World and It Started with a Kiss. Cherryl Vines, also from Stourbridge, has written a book based on her mother’s wartime experiences in Worcestershire and Birmingham, while Bewdley’s own Robert Ronsson tells the story of his grandfather, a notorious Glaswegian politician, in No Mean Affair. There will also be a Book Drop, whereby readers can leave favourite books in bags around the town and others can take one, read the book, write a comment, and pass it on. Share your favourite books by putting them in a bag from Tourist Info or St. Anne's Church and leaving it somewhere prominent for others to enjoy. Dates and times can be found on www.bewdleyfestival.org.uk and www.kidderminstershuttle.co.uk/leisure. Tickets for all events are available from Bewdley Tourist Information Centre and events cost between £2 and £5, or save over £20 with a Season Ticket for only £30. We are looking for women or men who are interested in the development of their local community in the broadest sense and who are prepared to give their time on a voluntary basis to the benefit of the town. We are particularly interested in people who have expertise in business development, marketing and digital media, but would also welcome applications from others who feel that their skills, knowledge and experience could help the Trust. Anyone interested can contact Robert Smith, Chairman, or Peter Miller at Bewdley Development Trust on 01299 405516 or email info@bewdley.org.uk

Bewdley Medical Centre - Flu Campaign 2012 ‘Protect yourself from Flu’
If you are aged 65 or over or suffer from chronic disease such as heart, lung, liver, kidney or neurological disease, have diabetes, a weak immune system or if you are pregnant, then you may be at risk from flu. This year’s flu campaign will start in October 2012, with bookable clinics during October. If you are eligible for a seasonal flu jab, then please look out for further information on how to book your flu jab either at the surgery or you can visit our website: www.bewdleymedicalcentre.com
Q&A’s Can the vaccination cause flu? – No, because the vaccine doesn’t contain live viruses.
Are there any side effects to the vaccines? – There may be slight soreness at the point of injection & some people may feel mild flu like symptoms over the following days. More serious reactions are possible but rare.
When is the best time to get vaccinated?’ – Between September and November. Don’t
wait until there is a flu epidemic.
Bewdley and District Horticultural Society
At our September meeting the Society had a very useful and informative presentation on fruit trees and shrubs. Topics within the talk dealt with researching for the correct rooting stock, soil preparation, planting, growing and pruning. All of these points are aimed at producing the best disease free crop over the longest possible time and making sure that planted fruit trees are not too big for their location. Our next meeting is on Wednesday, 3rd October when John Clewes will be with us from the R.S.P.B. association. At the same time we shall be holding our mini autumn show and due to the cancellation of our August show we have decided to add extra classes to the autumn schedule as follows: 4 Scones, Jar of Jam, A dish of apples, Apple crumble. Photograph of a day out in Bewdley, Small item of knitting, A vase of chrysanthemums, A vase of autumn foliage and/or Berries, A vase of flowers – distinct kind, A vase of flowers - mixed. We meet at Wribbenhall Community Centre, Shaw Hedge Road, Wribbenhall, Bewdley, DY12 1EU at 7.35pm. for 7.45pm start. You do not need to be a member to come to any of our meetings. Entrance is £1.50 to include refreshments. More details Derek on 01562 751992

Open Views day
The event was blessed with all-day sunshine and over a hundred people followed the map round the sixteen “open views”. Everyone had a good time including the owners of the views. “People were so nice”, seemed to be the general feeling. Along with “Let’s do it again next year!” These are some of the pictures taken by our own Gary Mayner. He will be picking the winners of the Open Views Photo Competition later this month.

Worcestershire's Historic Apple Trees Be an Apple Detective
The county's Tree Wardens have been asked to help re-discover some of our lost apple varieties. Around two dozen local varieties are already known, but historical records mention several more that were known in 1884; not long ago in terms of the life of a tree which means that they may well have existed within living memory. It is this store of memories that we should like to tap into. Simply, does any reader recognise any of the apple varieties listed below? It may well be that in different parts of the county these apples were known by different names so any old apple which seems to match any of the descriptions below is worth a mention. Don't be afraid of setting us off on a wild goose chase. We are looking for the five varieties listed below with a brief description of their fruit. Knott's Kernel - Said in 1884 to be much grown throughout the county. It is a medium-sized cooking apple, roundish but slightly flattened in shape; skin is citron with dark purplish stripes. Flesh is crisp and juicy with a brisk acidity. Martin Nonpareil - Possibly from Martin Hussingtree but also grown elsewhere. Fruit is smallish with pale yellow skin, slightly rough and sprinkled with brown/russet spots. A vigorous tree and a good bearer of fruit which keep until March . Pigeon's Heart - A large apple with yellowish-green skin flushed with brown and red streaks and russet dots. The flesh is crisp, tinged green; flavour sub-acid. A late cropper with fruit said to keep until May. Red Splash - Commonly grown in the Newland area of Malvern. A small apple (2" in size), golden yellow skin with extensive crimson streaks. Mostly grown for processing into pickles, chutneys and jellies. Sytchampton Russet (or Sytchampton Pearmain) - A medium sized apple with a skin of grey russet and a brownish flush. The flesh is crisp, tender, yellowish with an aromatic flavour. A late-cropping apple which keeps well until February. Do any of these descriptions ring a memory bell? Or even better, do you have at the bottom of the garden, tucked away in a hedgerow or an abandoned corner, anything that seems to match any of these? We should love to know. Please contact us via the Town Clerk's Office in Bewdley either by email: townclerk@bewdley.org.uk by phone: 01299 400157 or by mail: Town Clerk, Bewdley Town Council, The Guildhall, Bewdley. Wribbenhall Parish Rooms Completes First Phase of its Major Upgrade
Following a generous grant of £22,500 from the LEADER fund boosted by contributions from various bodies, local Councillors and support from the local community, the sum of £28,000 has been spent on a total revamp of the toilet block; providing disabled and baby changing facilities, outside access to toilets and a small meeting room for hire. The next phase of renovation will see a new central heating system replacement double glazed windows and partial rewire at a cost of £50,000. Chairman of Wribbenhall Parish Room Committee Mrs Liz Davies said "This is an exciting phase both for the Hall and the community of Wribbenhall, with continued investment and support we hope to create a truly fantastic community venue for the next 100 years.” Our aim is to try and have major works completed for the 100th Birthday of Wribbenhall Parish Room in 2015. Tails of a Veterinary Practice
life at Riverside Vets as seen by Gavin the practice cat.
As anyone visiting the surgery may have noticed, I haven’t been seen as much downstairs in reception recently. The reason for this is that I’ve taken to having a nap in the early autumn patches of sun that sometimes flood through the windows of my room upstairs. My humans also tell me I’ve been dreaming and talking in my sleep, which they think is cute.
Later in the evenings though, I’ve been venturing downstairs for a while to see my friends and their humans. I usually get on well with all of the cats and surprisingly most of the dogs. There have been lots of new puppies visiting the surgery recently and it can be a challenge for their humans to make sure that they grow up to be well behaved dogs. As I have probably told you before, we have a new vet called Elena who is very interested in animal behaviour. She believes that in order to have a well balanced dog it is important to start training at an early age. To help humans achieve this, the practice has organised some puppy walks and advice sessions that are free of charge and lots of fun. Please take good care of your pets More from me again next month
Discover Bewdley – Harvest Fair Saturday 6th & Sunday 7th October
This year the Harvest Fair will not only be a celebration of local produce, traditional arts and crafts but it will also herald the start the 25th season of Bewdley Festival. On Saturday morning the Wytchwood Morris Dancers will open up before a parade from the popular Suffolk Punch horses from Trimpley, who will traverse through the town.
Following the success of the Bewdley Harvest Soup Trail in 2011, the second trail will take place from noon to 4pm on Saturday when you will have the opportunity to sample the soups on offer at the pubs and restaurants in the town. Forms can be purchased for £2 from the Deli in Load Street and the Farm Shop in Dog Lane. All who return their forms will be entered into a prize draw for a family ticket to the Severn Valley Railway. There will be craft and food stalls on the public space on Severnside South, guided town walks and the monthly Bewdley Local Produce Market will take place on Sunday in Load Street. The Museum will have a host of Georgian craft activities, apple pressing and copper kettle. They will have music too and rare pigs in Jubilee Gardens. Make a note in your diary and come and join in.

“A Portrait In Words – A Woman Of Importance”
With some trepidation I rang the bell of the stately Georgian town-house in Bewdley’s High Street. The door was opened by a kindly woman who showed me into the presence of Mrs. Florence Stevens Pritchard. The Lady was seated in a commanding position opposite a vacant chair, in which I had little anticipated spending four hours. I was greeted with a firm, warm hand-clasp and I sat down to face this locally important centenarian, renowned for her gently authority and compassion. Mrs. Pritchard was born at the Lye in Worcestershire on February 18th 1888 and was educated at the local Church of England school, but she told me with great pride of her French lessons at the Ladies’ Private School. A skilled pianist, she gained her A.L.C.M. in 1909, her love of music remaining with her all her life. Two years later she came to live in Bewdley.
On April 14th,1917 Florence married a childhood friend: William Jones Pritchard. The wedding took place at All Saints’ Church, Wribbenhall. William was discharged from the armed forces, severely disabled in action on the Hill of Hebron in Palestine and she became wife and nurse, never envisaging that their life together would be so fruitful with dedication to the town they both grew to love.
Florence Pritchard was elected to the Borough Council in 1932 and remained for twenty years, becoming Lady Mayoress from 1934 to 1941. During the days of the Second World War this remarkable woman set up a canteen above the ‘Chocolate Box’ in Load Street for the troops of the 1st London Division “Bow Bells” stationed at Ribbesford House. Meanwhile, evacuee children arrived from Birmingham and she opened a hostel for the most difficult at Hernes Nest House, where she toiled endlessly to give them loving care and homely security. This Civic Dignitary was an enthusiastic member of the Red Cross and a respected Governor of the national school in Lax Lane and later St. Anne’s school. Sadly, William died in 1950 but his wife continued their joint work and was elected Mayor from 1956 to 1960. Mrs Pritchard was a force not to be trifled with if the matter in hand involved her beloved Bewdley. In 1964 Florence was honoured by the Queen when she was awarded an M.B.E. in the New Year’s Honours’ list. The Freedom of the Borough followed in 1971 in recognition of her service to the local community.
In 1989 Mrs Florence Pritchard became blind but was still delighted to receive visitors both young and old alike. Her kindness and compassion for those less fortunate make her a much loved and respected figure and her closing exemplary words are with me still: “Never weary of work well done, that is what I have tried to do and the man I married fortunately thought the same”. Mrs Judith George.

TOWN COUNCIL NEWS
TOWN COUNCIL MEETING HELD ON 3RD SEPTEMBER 2012 Bewdley Transport Package Councillors were glad to hear that there would be a further round of consultation carried out by the County Council on the package of measures designed to improve the appearance of Load Street and in particular the pavements. They were worried at a suggestion that “imprint” paving may be used instead of traditional flagstones. They also agreed again to press for changes to be made to the priorities at the junction of Welch Gate and Dowles Road and for a 20mph speed limit to be introduced in the town centre. Queensway Estate – Road Surface Condition The Council had a report that the condition of the road surface throughout the Queensway Estate was not good. Some repairs had been carried out but much more work needed to be done urgently. Councillors were unsure as to the criteria laid down by the County Council as to when potholes and surfaces that had broken up were repaired or left alone. Clarification will be requested. Vehicle Activated Signs (VAS) The Council welcomed an offer from County Councillor Campion to provide a Vehicle Activated Sign which would be owned and operated by the Town Council. These signs had been successful elsewhere in reducing the number of vehicles exceeding the speed limit and they could be moved around various locations where there was a clear problem. Northwood Lane – Open Space Development There had been a lot of controversy about what had happened during the last year on this site but having strongly criticised the District Council as to the way it had proceeded so far and acknowledging there were issues outstanding, the Town Council agreed some proper plan should be drawn up with full public consultation. The area could once again become an attraction for local Bewdley people and for visitors. Local Policing Report CSO Jeni Bray had submitted a report as to levels of criminal activity in Bewdley over the last month. The Council looked forward to regular updates. Future Town Council meetings
Future Town Council meetings held at The Guildhall on Mondays (except where indicated) at 7.30pm are: 1st October, 5th November and 3rd December.
Minutes of Town Council and Planning Committee Meetings are posted on the Notice Boards outside the Mayor’s Parlour, in the Guildhall Entrance and Load Street Car Park. They are also available at the Library and at the Town Clerk’s Office and on the Town Council’s page of www.bewdley.org.uk

My Olympic Memories
There have been items in the 'Shuttle' about London 2012 'Games Makers' from Kidderminster, but I have been Bewdley's own. Based at Excel I was a driver able to use the much talked about Games Lanes.
It was a tribute to London's transport system that we were not as busy as expected. We took officials and IOC members between airports and hotels, hotels and venues and between venues.
One of my colleagues took Usain Bolt home at 4am after he won his first gold medal whilst others took Mo Farah and Tom Daley home.
The next car to mine took Eddie Izzard from Earls Court one day.
I did get to meet and chat to Gymnastic commentators Christine Still and Mitch Fenner in the Olympic Park whilst Mo Farah was running the 5000m final and took the CEO of one of the sponsors and WFI President to their hotels. It was an incredible experience. People on the tube who didn’t know each other chatted: I got stopped on the street and thanked for volunteering by people I didn't know.
I also got to see Kazakhstan win two medals - a gold in the women's weightlifting and a bronze in Greco-Roman wrestling!
There were some fantastic people there and I have made some long term friends. We had volunteers from all over the world who had come over specially for the Olympics. A never to be forgotten experience and lots of happy memories. Graham Ward
O c to b e r i n t h e Fo re s t
We may feel rather short-changed in terms of our summer this year, but that won’t stop the onset of autumn. Since the autumn equinox on 22nd September the days have been shorter than the nights. The declining daylight hours send a natural signal to every living thing to be getting ready for harder times, triggering various behaviours designed to give the best possible chance of survival.
Hedgehogs, bats, dormice, ants and snakes are some of the creatures that have the strategy of hibernating for the winter months. Cold-blooded animals are not able to regulate their internal temperature and so have no choice but to shut down when the weather is cold. The mammals (hedgehogs, bats and dormice included) can keep going but only as long as there is enough food around. Hedgehogs eat as much as they can in the autumn (slugs for main course, blackberries for dessert) to build up reserves of fat then find a dry spot, perhaps under a pile of brushwood and dead leaves,
to snooze away the coldest days, waking in warm spells when they must find more food if they are to replace the energy used by their waking activity. It is better for the hedgehogs, if not for us, for the winter to be relentlessly cold so that they stay dormant until the spring.
A small hedgehog found awake in November may need your intervention to survive,
thus breaking the general rule that wild animals fare best left well alone. They are so scarce these days that I feel we need every individual.
Forest Friends have been meeting on Thursdays in term-time from 10am to 11am for forest-based play and activities, led by Discovery Centre staff and recently by volunteers as well. This autumn the Ranger-led activities will take place on the first Thursday of each month, and this month the theme for the games and crafts is “Hibernation”. The one hour session costs £3 per child with £1 for each participating sibling (ie same family).
On the other Thursday mornings of each month, Forest Friends are welcome to meet informally at the same time to walk the Discovery Centre Sensory Trail and can use a box of activities supplied by the learning team at a charge of £1 per child.
Sunday 14th October - Fungus Forays: 10.30am to 12.30pm from Hawkbatch car park, 2pm to 4pm from Earnwood car park. (Both of these car parks are on the B 4194) Cost £7. Booking essential.
The Wyre Forest is the subject of a new booklet of the same name which has just been published by the Forestry Commission. It is full of wonderful photographs and information on the geology, history, wildlife and management of this wonderful natural gem on our doorsteps. You can obtain a copy at Bewdley Tourist Information Office (at the Museum), The Forest Café, Hopley’s and other local outlets at £6 a copy.
