Bewdley Twinning Association
This year has been a great year for anniversaries and celebrations in the UK and Bewdley has had its share.
Through August and September Bewdley Museum held an exhibition featuring the links between a history of the Free French at Ribbesford House, the shared relationship between Bewdley and its Twin Town Fort Mahon Plage, in Picardy, France and the formation of Bewdley Twinning Association. 2012 celebrates 70 years of history at Ribbesford, 50 years of town twinning and 25 years of the Bewdley Twinning Association.
Over the last weekend of September, there was a significant gathering to recognise these anniversaries. From Paris we were joined by a small party representing the Association of the “Cadet de la France Libre”. Two of the party, Rene Marbot and Rene Lemoine, were actually stationed at Ribbesford in the 1940’s, each with a vast hoard of memories; they were accompanied by the Secretary of their Association M Serge Arvengas. From Fort Mahon Plage came a delegation of 30 people, hosted by members of our Twinning Association. Celebrations were held in brilliant sunshine on Saturday the 29th of September in the Museum courtyard. Fort Mahon’s Chairman of the Committee de Jumelage had collected from the Museum of Charles De Gaulle, Paris, original panels supporting the history of events at Ribbesford and these supplemented the exhibition for the weekend.
The Deputy Lord Lietenant of Worcestershire, Colonel Patrick Holcroft, in company with our Mayor, Councillor John Latham and our MP, Mark Garnier, were also present and, following speeches, everyone was invited to enjoy the museum and the exhibition.
Later in the day a simple and dignified act of Remembrance was held at Ribbesford House, courtesy of Columb and Merryn Howell, where wreaths were laid. French visitors were also able to inspect artefacts from the time of the French being stationed at Ribbesford that have remained in the archives. We learnt from Rene Marbot at first hand that the rumour of French cadets using the weather vane on St Leonard’s church steeple for target practice was not a rumour but an established fact. The Bridge is the community voice of Bewdley
It is free and delivered by volunteers to more than 4,600 homes every month
Not one of the year’s best months, is November; cold, wet, grey and the start of another Bewdley winter. Let’s call in a few good memories from last month to help get through it. Here’s my selection: 1. Going into Jubilee Gardens and seeing a tree dressed in a flamboyant multicoloured bodystocking.
2. Festival Sunday, walking a visitor up a crowded Load Street past morris dancers, apple pressers and market stalls of local food and hearing him say “What a lovely place!”. 3.Watching a sideways duck drifting in stately fashion downriver and bumping into another duck it hadn’t noticed.
4.A really fantastic rainbow stretching from one side of the sky right over to the other.
5. Laughing myself silly in Ian MacMillan’s talk during the festival …. And plenty more good memories if I try.
Having just spent what seemed like half a millennium trying to sort out my new mobile phone, then getting a parking ticket for my pains, I really needed to write that so that I could remember why I still got up this morning. Then Gary came round with the photos from the Open Views day and I had a lovely time looking at them. What a clever lot you all are.
And finally…… we all sat round the other day choosing the photos for this years’ Bridge calendar. You’re going to love them; you might actually be in one of them! And that reminds me: I want to persuade Gary to take a more flattering one of me for this page. One that makes me look more like my 26-year-old self.

It was with great sadness that we had to say goodbye to a very cherished and loved member of our congregation. Sandra Perrett, one of our organists, sadly died suddenly on Monday 10th September. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family. Our harvest and fun day were both great successes – even the weather was kind to us. The house fellowships, knit and natter and walking group have all re-started after the summer break. For more details about any of these activities or any special services please contact Rev. Biographies are very popular with Bewdley people, be it historical figures, politicians or those from the world of entertainment. Many borrowers work their way through our biography section. It's reassuring when you find out that those in the public eye have human failings after all; occasionally you discover something that makes your hair stand on end. Edwina Currie and John Major – who saw that one coming?
Just to make things awkward though, not all of our biographies are in this section. Many appear in the non-fiction section in the appropriate subject area (music, entertainment, sport) and if you're not careful you can miss out on some good reads. Have a look next time you're in, as gradually all the biographies are going to be absorbed into the Dewey system. A few recommendations to get you going: Nicky Haslam's Redeeming Features
Rupert Everett's Red Carpets and Other Banana Skins
Paul O'Grady's At My Mother's Knee and The Devil Rides Out (a personal favourite)

It’s Friday and J and her sister come in for a browse. J works in Bewdley but her sister is from “out of town.” Boy - when they come do they spend! J is easily led and her sister keeps finding clothes for her to try and explaining how she couldn’t possibly do without any of the fifteen garments she has tried on!
Pete is next; he’s a real local, born and bred in Bewdley. What he doesn’t know isn’t worth worrying about. Now, I think he is ex- forces as his shoes positively sparkle and you can see your reflection in them. He pops in two or three times a week just to make sure all is well at KEMP and to gossip with the Volunteers and me of course!
Joan comes in on Saturdays. She has the most beautiful garden and she holds open days for the NGS. Her garden is her passion and she can identify any plant or weed you care to challenge her on.

Do you have a pair of shoes that have a story attached to them?
If so then I would like to hear from you.
I am working with a team of people to create an exhibition of shoes and stories from people connected with Bewdley and the surrounding area. They might be regular shoes or they might be trainers, sandals, boots, brogues, ballet shoes or some other footwear;
they might belong to you or someone else;
but the important thing is that they are connected to a story or an experience, which is important to you (or whoever was wearing the shoes). We will take great care of the shoes and will of course return them.
The exhibition will be in Bewdley in 2013 – dates yet to be finalised.
The shoes that are used will be selected to show the different circumstances and life of the owners and will include a variety of people. You can phone me on 01299 402275 or email me: rector@bewdleyparish.org.uk Revd Keith James

Safari Park helps makes a dream come true
Wendy Jackson, Public Relations Officer at The West Midlands Safari Park, was intrigued to receive a call from a milliner wanting to photograph her hats at the park. Everything became clear when Caroline explained that she had created a hat collection inspired by African animals. Bob Lawrence gave permission for Caroline to hold a fashion shoot at the park, and Caroline asked friends to model her hats. “Seeing some of the world’s most majestic animals with people wearing my hats was a truly amazing experience.”, she said.
Caroline is donating 12% from the sale of her Wild Collection hats to the Safari Park’s Namibian Wildlife Conservation Trust.

The Bewdley School and Sixth Form Centre opened the Bewdley Youth Festival 2012 with an exhibition that shared history, art and poetry. The work was created by KS3 learners as part of The School Heritage Project, which was supported by the Bewdley Civic Society. The main aim of the project was to encourage young people to develop an interest in the town and its future, and appreciate its heritage and its environment. Learners used the leaflets, The Lost Industries of Bewdley* and The River Severn in the Bewdley Area ** created by two local historians, who are also members of the society, as starting points. In addition to the leaflets, the main resources used were photographs from the collections of Ken Hobson, The Bewdley Museum and publications by the Bewdley Historical Research Group. Staff at the school co-ordinated the project with KS3 learners. In the English Department, learners expressed their ideas about the industrial heritage of the town, the changes that have taken place and the constancy of the River Severn, all through poetry. The Art Department worked with learners to produce mixed media 3D pieces depicting their vision of Bewdley, its history and its future. Heather Flack, a local historian, and Barbara Longmore, both from the Civic Society, worked with the History Department, where learners researched historical aspects of Bewdley. Bewdley Civic Society would like to congratulate the learners from the school, who have worked hard to make this project a success. During the Youth Festival, learners from across the school also participated in a variety of different events, which included an art competition, photography exhibition and music concert. During the Festival Art Competition, Reuben Howles, a Year 8 learner, was awarded first prize for his outstanding three- dimensional piece depicting aspects of Bewdley from the past, and his vision of the town in the future! Will Roff, Bethany Carter, Chloe Mulders and Beth Knowles who are also in Year 8, were highly commended for their inspirational artwork. The artwork was judged by local artist Kate Wigglesworth. * Published by Fenella Flack ** Published by Fenella Flack and Richard Perrin
Harvest Fair
Harvest Fair Soup Trail
What a brilliant idea and what a lot of fun! We started at the Woodcolliers, then on to Grannystap, into the High Street for a sneak preview into Pomodoro’s in the Bailiff’s House, then across the road to Clementine’s and on to the Little Packhorse. We detoured into the Jubilee Gardens to see what was going on there as part of the Harvest Fair, then out onto Severnside for the two stalls representing the Hop Pole and Emma Passey’s Paisley Catering, finally ending up in the Mug House, where we met people just starting out and doing it the other way round. Everywhere there was a warm welcome as well as interesting tasty soups – vegetable in several guises, fish, two lots of mushrooms and a very interesting pear, courgette and ginger. We chatted with people we knew and those we didn’t and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Bewdley was at its best in the autumn sunshine and buzzing with people and activity. How lucky we are to live here. The announcement of the winner was made outside the Guildhall in yet more lovely sunshine the following day, while the Local Produce Market was going on and Morris Dancers entertained everyone. The prize went to Clementines, to their obvious delight, but all eight were winners, for taking part and reminding us of how lucky we are in Bewdley to have such a range of eateries with friendly staff, good food and great buildings. The Bewdley Passion Play 2013
In March next year the streets of Bewdley will become a theatre where the greatest story ever told, Passion of Christ, will be performed on Good Friday, March 29th, 2013.
Load Street and the bridge will be closed for an hour from 2.15pm, whilst the Bewdley Passion Play is performed by professional and non-professional actors. The play will be a promenade in which actors and audience move between different places in the centre of Bewdley – as the story of the trial and death of Jesus is performed. The climax is the crucifixion scene in front of St. Anne’s Church, Load Street. The play has been adapted from a play performed in Warwick town centre and will be directed by Stephen Conway, who has a few non-speaking roles still to be filled. If anybody wishes to be involved, please contact Stephen on 07774 252 992 or email stephen.conway2012 @btinternet.com.
There will be a meeting of all those involved and any others who may be interested in being involved on Thursday 8th November at 7.30pm in St Anne's Church. This will be a get to know each other meeting and not a rehearsal.

Bewdley Games Maker
I was lucky enough to be one of the Games Makers on the Mall last month for the Olympic athletes’ parade. The atmosphere was very special again and we were entertained prior to the parade passing. Almost opposite was the choir from the opening ceremony and they sung their hearts out for most of the time we were waiting. It was a bit like a mini opening ceremony, because there were also people with the hats with lights on, drummers and nurses.
Although we didn't get to be outside Buckingham Palace, we could see a big screen and what was going on. Eddie Izzard, who has worked very hard with the Games Makers before and during the Olympics, was going up and down the Mall 'high fiving' as he went.
After arriving in London in the morning,we went to London Bridge to photograph the Paralympic symbols hanging from it. Sitting opposite us on the tube was an athlete on the way to the parade. She was a previous winner of the BBC Sports Personality of the Year and a silver medalist this time around. It was none other then Zara Phillips. Not somebody you see on the tube every day. Tails of a Veterinary Practice
life at Riverside Vets as seen by Gavin the practice cat.
I usually enjoy human celebrations and often come downstairs to join in. Recently some of my humans have had birthdays and last week Hannah brought in her baby daughter for me to see.
However, not all human celebrations are fun for animals and one in particular is very unwelcome. I hate Bonfire Night and find all the flashes and bangs really scary. Luckily my humans are very kind and make sure that I am safe inside and well away from the nasty fireworks. Not all animals are so fortunate and often vets have to treat animals that have been badly injured by bonfires and fireworks.
Keeping your animals safe in and around November 5th is important, because we get so frightened and stressed. Try to keep us calm and relaxed, but take care when handling us; a human I know had a serious bite on his finger when he picked up his cat just as a firework went off!
Some of my animal friends get so stressed with fireworks that they need help to keep calm. If you think that your dog or cat might get very stressed, then it is possible to get a plug-in or tablets that can help them. I hope that all you humans enjoy Bonfire Night, but remember we hate it. so please look after us. More again from me next month.
Gavin.

TOWN COUNCIL NEWS
TOWN COUNCIL MEETING HELD ON 1ST OCTOBER 2012
Christmas Lights Councillors agreed to go ahead with the purchase of some replacement feature lights for Severnside South. Like those that were purchased for Load Street a couple of years ago they would be more energy efficient and enable the Council to make some savings on its electricity bill. It was agreed that the lights on the Christmas Tree by St Annes Church should also be replaced by more modern and energy efficient ones.
Parish Games The Council had received a letter from the District Council to say that the old format of the Parish Games, which had been suspended this year on account the clash with the Olympics, would not continue in 2013 and beyond. Instead there was talk of an inter-parish quiz being arranged rather than a series of individual games. Councillors were disappointed at the news but awaited more details.
Civic Awards Just a reminder that 30th November is the closing date for anyone to nominate a worthy individual for a Civic Award. The scheme which has been in place for over ten years is to reward people with the honour (and a medal) who have given outstanding service to the local community in Bewdley/Wribbenhall.
Trees at Anton Close and Campion Way Wribbenhall The Planning Committee agreed following a site meeting with residents and the District Council’s Arboricultural Officer that they would look more favourably on applications that related to the removal or management of this old avenue of trees given there were concerns as to the size of the trees and the risk of branches falling off suddenly and causing injuries. This would be subject to replacement trees being planted of a size more suitable for the estate.
Phone Mast on A456 Roundabout at Catchems End The Planning Committee also heard of a proposal by one of the phone operators to install a 30 metre high phone mast next to the Safari Park by the roundabout. Councillors questioned the height which they felt would be obtrusive at the “gateway” to the town. Future Town Council meetings
Town Council meetings are held at The Guildhall at 7.30pm on the first Monday of each month unless stated otherwise. The next meetings are: 5th November, 3rd December and 7th January.
Minutes of Town Council and Planning Committee Meetings are posted on the Notice Boards outside the Mayor’s Parlour, in the Guildhall Entrance and Load Street Car Park. They are also available at the Library and at the Town Clerk’s Office and on the Town Council’s page of www.bewdley.org.uk

Community News Dear Editor,
Your thoughts about David Glenn’s contribution to the Bridge magazine in the last edition made me think of all his other work in the Town.
As a Director of Bewdley Development Trust over the last 2 years, his enthusiasm, passion and skills did so much to contribute to the work of the Trust. In particular, David was instrumental in shaping the recently re-designed Bewdley website and providing a professional approach to publicising the Local Produce Market and many other events in the town. He contributed a great deal and is missed by all of us who worked with him.
Yours sincerely Robert Smith Chairman Bewdley Development Trust

November in the Forest
At Uncllys Farm we get a little glow of satisfaction from seeing our new log store full of seasoned firewood. We know we are ready to keep the kitchen range and the Ruskin Studio stove burning through the cold, dark months.
Like us, the forest wildlife is preparing for the winter, following instinctive seasonal behaviour to survive the hard times ahead. Moles are seldom seen in person but in the autumn spend time collecting dry grass and leaves for their sleeping chambers underground. They patrol their tunnel network looking for worms and other soil invertebrates, including garden pests such as cockchafer and carrot fly larvae. They dig with their powerful, heavyclawed forepaws, pushing the soil behind them, while bracing themselves against the walls of the tunnel with their hind limbs. When a good pile of soil has accumulated. the mole turns and pushes it back along the tunnel to a shaft leading to the surface, creating the familiar mole hill. The shallow, linear tunnels, which you sometimes see as slightly raised ridges of soil, could be a sign of moles colonising new areas. The ground seldom freezes, so moles can continue to feed through the winter, mainly on worms, which they often store un-
derground in large numbers.
Please forgive me for mentioning it in November, but the time is coming when the Discovery Centre will be decorated with aromatic green boughs and fairy lights, Charlie the Deer will wear his holly crown, and schoolchildren will be visiting the forest in droves to find out what happens to the wildlife in winter. Our celebration of the season is open to all members of the public this year at the Wyre Days of Christmas through the weekends of December at the Community Discovery Centre. As well as offering some very fine specimens of Norway spruce and Noble fir as Christmas trees, there will be decoration workshops for adults and children over 8 (on 8th December only), local producers’ stalls and a visit to Father Christmas’s forest cabin! Please call the Recreation Team on 01905 533839 for more information or to book for the workshops.
Meanwhile, if you would like to get as far away from such things as possible, or even spend some time creating home made gifts for friends and family, you’ll be very welcome to come and share the Ruskin Studio at Uncllys Farm on Mellow Mondays. For a small charge of £5 (drinks included) you will be able to use the studio as a base to sit and spin, paint, knit, or whatever your chosen craft, from 9.30am to 4.30pm. Please ring me on 01299 403691 if you’re intending to come. Linda Iles
