The BRIDGE January 2013
Community News Mark Garnier MP with SGH Venue Management directors
GO AHEAD GIVEN FOR NEW COMMUNITY HUB IN BEWDLEY
Bewdley residents will soon be able to enjoy much improved facilities at St George’s Hall in the centre of the town.
The project will see the demolition of the 1960s hall extension and the erection of a new 3 storey building on the same building footprint. The existing hall will be refurbished. The whole project will provide a good quality multi-purpose hub for the town. It will include a foyer with meeting and exhibition space together with a cafe/bar. New activity spaces will be available to hire for a wide range of functions from meetings to parties. The refurbished hall will provide a function space for around 200 people. New toilets, a lift and other facilities will be provided in the new part of the building. The project has been made possible through a grant from the EU funded Rural Development Programme for England managed by DEFRA and by further support from Wyre Forest District Council,Wyre Forest Community Housing and Bewdley Town Council.
The total project cost is expected to be around £900,000 including all previous planning expenditure. Construction work by local firm Harpers of Leominster started in November 2012. Building work is expected to be complete by the end of May 2013. An opening date for the Hall in mid 2013 will be announced nearer the time.
The Hall, in the centre of Bewdley, has been operated as a community hall by a charitable group of Trustees. Keith Campbell, Chairman of the Trustees, said “We have been working hard for ten years to secure a way to make the hall suitable for the needs of our users and the community. In 2009 we asked Bewdley Development Trust and Bewdley Festival to work with us to redevelop St Georges Hall. A new joint charitable company consisting of the three partners has been set up to renovate and operate the hall for the next 15 years. The Trustees are very grateful for the funding that has been made available from all the funding partners. We hope the whole community will make good use of the Hall.”
Robert Smith, Chairman of Bewdley Development Trust, said “We were delighted to obtain a grant from the Rural Development Programme for England (RDPE) for £805,000. We’ve also been able to negotiate funding from Wyre Forest District Council,Wyre Forest Community Housing and from Bewdley Town Council. The Development Trust has carried out the majority of the development and planning of the new project, and we’re delighted to be managing the construction phase on behalf of the joint company”.
Mark Garnier, MP for Wyre Forest, has welcomed the announcement that St George’s Hall is to be refurbished. He said “The new community hub facility will provide a fantastic local boost to Bewdley town centre - its refurbished design will offer flexibility for many different local events. This project has been driven by local support, showing that growth is most effective when community groups work together to create the improvements they need”.
Editorial News
The Bridge is the community voice of Bewdley
It is free and delivered by volunteers to more than 4,600 homes every month
Our editor is taking a break and as Margaret is a hard act to follow, it’s going to take two of us to step into her shoes. We've got our "L" plates on, so please be kind. All offers of help gratefully received.
The last few weeks have flown by in a haze of frantic panic: practising our magical Christmas music (oh the joy of singing), fitting Christmas food preparation into a busy schedule and enjoying the results of all this endeavour, which I hope has been similarly enjoyed by everyone else in Bewdley.
The start of our celebrations was our Christmas lights festival, and we were all thankful that the rain stopped long enough for us to enjoy a fantastic day, thanks to the efforts of the happy band of organisers, who worked so hard to make it a success despite all the trials and tribulations involved. I think an essential prerequisite for any committee member is an enduring optimistic outlook.
Now we are starting a new year with all the eager anticipation of the fresh pages life gives us, to start making plans for new challenges or to seek out familiar joys. I love looking for new life. The leaf buds swelling and the occasional flower making an early appearance giving a hint of what is to come. The days start to lengthen slowly at first by just a minute or two and then explode to embrace another spring. Walking wrapped warmly, listening, watching the scene open, smelling the cold winter air or the joy of home in front of a warm fire, curled up with a good book and a mug of hot chocolate. So cheers to all of us for a very Happy New Year.
Ruth

Taking a Break
Community News
Our many keen readers will have noticed a new name and picture on the editorial page.
This is because, after some ten years or so I have decided to take a break. Not to spend more time with my family; rather to spend more time on things like eating and sleeping. So that the Bridge would continue to serve the town as well as it always has done, I waylaid a couple of unsuspecting Bewdley worthies and locked them in a darkened cellar without food until they capitulated and said they’d hold the fort for six months or so. One of them, Ruth, is going to do some writing; the other who refuses to appear in public without the false moustache and beard will do the myriad other jobs that they don’t yet know about. I promised this person, so I can’t even tell you whether it’s a man, woman or Martian.
Anyway, they are both looking much better now they have got over the shock and had something to eat, and I’ve even told them how exceedingly grateful I am. I know the rest of the team have been looking forward to next month when I finally disappear for a while, so may I commend these two to you and wait to see all the exciting changes they will make. Contact details for your contributions, comments and compliments stay the same, of course, and can be found on the editorial page.
Tails of a Veterinary Practice
Margaret
life at Riverside Vets as seen by Gavin the practice cat.
I hope you all had a lovely Christmas and a Happy New Year. Things are beginning to return to normal in the surgery as my humans are tidying up and taking down my Christmas tree. Once again I got lots of cards from my friends and I was very grateful for these. I also got a lot of food treats and think like many other pets I have over indulged this Christmas and I’m worried about my waistline getting bigger. I think we all need to know how important it is to stay healthy, so I might have to see my favourite vet humans, so they can work out my ideal weight watchers plan! It looks like my humans have once again overspent this Christmas and they are not looking forward to those bills coming in. It is tempting to try and save money by cutting back, and sometimes one of the things that gets cancelled is pet insurance. Living in a vets I know how costly specialist treatment can be, and how important it is that we get what we need when we need it. If you have a cat or a dog, you will want to be able to give them the best of treatment – so please make sure pet insurance is a top priority and that you don’t cancel it simple because you haven’t had to use it yet. I’ve just seen the weather forecast and it looks like it’s cold and icy. Every year I’m upset to hear the number of fellow cats who die as a result of drinking anti-freeze. Please make sure that you don’t leave any anti-freeze where an animal could get to it, as it can be very poisonous. More from me next month Gavin the cat

Community News Three million people live below the poverty line in the UK.
Redundancy., illness, benefit delay, domestic violence, debt, family breakdown and paying the additional cost of winter heating are just some of the reasons why people go hungry.
Food banks prevent crime, housing loss and mental breakdown.
We had to borrow a tin of soup from next door to stop our eighteen month old daughter going to bed hungry. If there wasn’t a food bank I’d have to steal something to feed my family I used to wash up for £10 a day just so I could eat the scraps
Just some of the experiences heard by food bank volunteers.
We are collecting food for the food bank at Baxter Church, Kidderminster, here in Bewdley. If you would like to help, donations can be left of individual items or collections in a bag at the back of St Anne’s church. The church is open every day, except Monday, between 10.00am and 2.30pm. HELP!
I wonder if you could ask your readers if they can help me identify the photograph, one of a series, from the Museum archive. I think it was taken in the 1950's and possibly on Wyre Hill. It was of a party and the Mayor and Mayoress, Councillor and Mrs Purcell, were there, making 1951 or 1952 the probable date. What was the celebration for and can anyone be identified, please? Please contact the editor with any information via email : editorial@bewdleybridge.org.uk
Inaugural Bewdley Youth Festival 29 September 2012
As part of the Bewdley Festival 25th anniversary celebrations a new annual event was launched in September 2012 aimed at the young people of the town; the Bewdley Youth Festival.
The brief was to hold events for young people and to celebrate the talent and achievements of the young people of the town and district. Master Chef Darren Bale’s Master Class There were various successful events held across a number of venues, including workshops and live music in Bewdley Museum, exhibitions at the Wheatsheaf Room and Bewdley Youth Café, an evening concert in St Anne’s Church, a ‘Musical Showcase’ at the Bewdley School and a “Meet the Olympians” event hosted by the Youth Café. We are very grateful to the many local people, businesses and community groups who got involved with Youth Festival. In 2013, we will be expanding the Youth Festival with the help of a grant from the Midcounties Co-operative and planning is now underway. If you would like more information about the Youth Festival or would like to get involved please contact the Festival Office: admin@bewdleyfestival.org.uk. Photos are courtesy of Colin Hill.

Dear Editor
Can any of your readers help me ? On Saturday December 1st, the day of Bewdley Christmas lighting up, I was on the Royal British Legion Stand and the Eagle on top of the HSBC building was brought to my notice.
I must confess I have never noticed it before and it interested me. I asked what it symbolized, but no one seemed to know; it was there before the Bank, as some said they had an old photo showing the eagle before the bank was there. I would be delighted if any of your readers can throw light on it. Many thanks

The Bewdley Trail
Following a chance conversation with my friend Cat Banks of Bewdley Blooms, we decided that hosting a Trail in Bewdley would be a great fun event for all ages. This year participating shops had an 'odd' item in their window that they had borrowed from a neighbouring shop. Following the trail you had to spot the odd item out in the window, and guess which shop it really belonged to.
The response we received from both shop keepers and members of the public who completed the free prize trail was fantastic. So many local businesses offered us prizes, including some like Duce & Romao, who donated a fantastic prize even though they were unable to be part of the trail, as we had to close the list to shops, as so many wanted to be part of the Trail.
Everybody who joined in said they had really enjoyed themselves. Kathryn Bishop and her husband heard about the trail on Signal 107 radio and came especially from Worcester. They had been to Bewdley before, but discovered shops that they never knew about on the trail. Spotting every item correctly, they won the voucher for The Park Royal Collection, and managed to buy several Christmas presents in the process!
The trail was such a success we will definitely be running one again, although next year we may think of a slightly different twist to the theme for a bit of variety. Kate Hampton

By the time you read this, Christmas will be a memory, and we'll be starting our trek through 2013. In spite of the New Year's number I'm feeling hopeful, especially as 2012 saw me falling downstairs, breaking a tooth on a bowl of granola and sporting a black eye courtesy of my car door, gravity and someone with butterfingers. Onwards and upwards...
Our customers are getting used to our change around and we've had some positive comments. Look out for what's going on at the Library on our revamped notice board where we will be displaying information about events, Adult Learning courses and visitors as well as District and County Council information and news of what's going on in the community.
We had a very positive outcome from the craft courses we ran last year; some of the learners have formed their own craft club, which now meets fortnightly here in the library. We are also hosting a Beading Course in January, which is something else new. Bewdley is now changing as work on St George's Hall begins in earnest. Remember that we're here and we get lonely very quickly, so please keep coming to see us in 2013! Kay Sanderson Bewdley Library

In my last article I promised to tell you a few tales from behind the scenes (Backstage as I call it). Well, I am going to introduce you to “Our Kate”. She came to Bewdley some eighteen months ago from Job Seekers on a scheme for the Young Unemployed. How lucky were we that she selected KEMP! At the end of that period Kate continued coming as a volunteer. Very quickly we could see that she was bright and great with customers. The ”powers that be” at KEMP contacted Kidderminster College to see if we could get funding for an Apprenticeship in Retail Management, and I am delighted to say we did and the rest as they say is History. Over to you Kate...
When I chose KEMP never in my wildest dreams did I think I would get offered a job, and a chance to get an NVQ in Customer Service! I am so lucky to have a job that I really love. It’s all thanks to KEMP and Kidderminster College. The reason why I love my work is that I am with fantastic volunteers, who have supported and encouraged me each day. It’s so different from other jobs I have had, because the volunteers come because they want to and not because they have to.
We wish you a very Happy New Year and thank you for all your support and look forward to seeing you throughout 2013!!

St Leonard’s Church Ribbesford
St Leonard’s church has had over £60,000 spent on it in the last few months to make sure it has a dry hat and boots.
As part of the project, the church’s bell cote roof has been re-tiled in oak shingles and all the rainwater goods have been replaced and upgraded, including two new overflow spouts in the west end valley gutters.
The work was carried out by Croft Building and Conservation Ltd of Cannock and the works were planned and overseen by architect Robert Kilgour of Park Lane, Bewdley. The church should now be ready to face whatever the weather throws at it over this winter and for years to come...

There seems to be a whole town consensus in Bewdley that things can always improve and get better. As we are now into January and have the entirety of 2013 ahead of us, I wonder what changes and improvements we as a town will be seeing over the coming year.
Well, what did we actually achieve in 2012? Many awards for our prestigious pubs, a crime rate 10% below the national average, playing host to the Olympic torch, celebrating the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and gaining some of the best GCSE and A Level results in the County stand out as highlights.
You might be thinking that 2012 will be hard to beat but, actually, I have faith we can match that level of success in 2013. We might not be fortunate enough to play a part in events such as the Olympics this year, but there is always something for us to take hold of, commit to and win.
What will you be aiming to achieve? Whether it’s just New Year resolutions to not eat as much chocolate and start to exercise, or perhaps something bigger, approach it with the “Bewdley frame of mind”. Commit, do, and win. Chris Salter
Live Wyres is a Wyre Forest based social club for single people. We meet in pubs around the area and hold dances and other events in a range of venues from hotels to village halls. Our first Pub Night in January will be on the 8th at The Island Pool in Cookley.
Our annual visit to the pantomime is planned for the 12th January to see “Aladdin” at Brierley Hill Civic Hall. Tickets are being sold quickly for this popular event.

TOWN COUNCIL NEWS
TOWN COUNCIL MEETING HELD ON 3rd December 2012 St George’s Hall Councillors noted that work had now started on the demolition of the extension to St George’s Hall, which will cause the loss of some car parking spaces immediately next to the site. The work is expected to be finished by next May at which point local residents can look forward to a much improved community venue right in the town centre. Christmas Lights Festival The Mayor thanked everyone who had been involved in the Christmas Lights Festival including the organisers who had freely devoted a large amount of their time in the months beforehand to ensuring it was a great success on the day. Community Emergency Response Team The Town Council is updating its Community Emergency Plan and is looking for extra members for its local response team. Community Response Team members are expected to be residents of the town and be available at short notice in the event of emergency to help to coordinate relief and work with the statutory agencies and emergency services. There are occasional meetings which include planning exercises but no more than probably two a year. If anyone is interested then please contact Frances Kellett at the Bewdley Guildhall preferably by email at projectofficer@bewdley.org.uk. Workhouse Building High Street The Planning Committee expressed concern at the continued delay in action being taken to improve the condition of this listed building and asked the Town Clerk to write to the District Council to press for the issue to be treated with some greater urgency. Wribbenhall Millennium Green Trust AGM Councillors received a report on the Annual General Meeting of the Trust and noted the much greater activity that had taken place there during the last year thanks to the involvement of local residents. Friends of Northwood Lane Park Councillors also received an update on the activities of the Friends Group, which was now operating under the auspices of the District Council and which was due to meet again in the New Year. Tree planting in the area was now imminent. Future Town Council meetings
Town Council meetings are held at The Guildhall at 7.30pm on the first Monday of each month unless stated otherwise. The next meetings are: 7th January, 4th February, 4th March and 1st April.
Minutes of Town Council and Planning Committee Meetings are posted on the Notice Boards outside the Mayor’s Parlour, in the Guildhall Entrance and Load Street Car Park. They are also available at the Library and at the Town Clerk’s Office and on the Town Council’s page of www.bewdley.org.uk

In the forest
Today is cold – one of those icy, sparkly, sunny days which are ideal for walking. Stepping out into the forest, I am soon on a narrow, uphill track where my boots occasionally crunch through a crust of muddy ice into water and I have to jump and skip around the deeper puddles. I keep my eyes open for a sighting of fallow deer through the bare oaks but see only pigeons, squirrels and a boisterous group of jays in search of acorns.
The fallen leaves have lost their bright colours and intriguing shapes, having broken down to a dark brown mulch on its way to becoming soil. It seals in moisture and a little residual warmth, so that roots and shoots can grow even under today’s frost. Looking more closely at a rotting log I can see that it is home to two kinds of delicate, vivid green mosses and resolve to learn more about these hardy little plants.
Warmed by the exercise, I complete the circle of my walk, crossing the fields and then stopping by the pond to watch for movement under the surface, which still has a thin layer of ice on the unlit side. Was that a water beetle that swam away at the extreme edge of my vision? Or maybe a water boatman? The water has cleared in the cold weather, so that I can see right down to the dead leaves on the bottom, where I have no doubt there is plenty going on.
I am resolved to complete this project this year. Although some wildlife has enjoyed my pond since it was dug five years ago, I have never finished the edge or populated the underwater shelves with aquatic plants. As a result this little world is out of balance, and warmer weather brings algal blooms that obscure my views of its inhabitants and shade out other submerged vegetation thatI try to establish. Now is the time to plan, and when the spring comes I can bring in my stone, gravel and plants with the hope of making a thriving and beautiful haven for some of our freshwater-loving wild creatures. The Discovery Centre ponds have had two years to settle down since the building work was completed. You may have seen the main pond with its dragonfly sculpture (shown in the photo being positioned by its sculptor, David Freedman) for yourself on a visit to the wildlife area and sensory trail. Unfortunately the pond water quality is suffering due to problems with the water treatment system, resulting in sensory experiences of a rather unpleasant and unforeseen kind! I hope the Forestry Commission’s expertise get everything working properly and make the pong a thing of the past!
If you would like an opportunity to help our wildlife in the forest this month, Butterfly Conservation have a volunteer work party on Wednesday 16th January, meeting at Dry Mill Lane car park, Bewdley (grid reference SO773764) for 10 am before driving to an area where butterfly habitat is being improved.
