Jubilee trees for Bewdley

The first of 60 Commemorative trees has been planted on Northwood Lane to mark the Queen’s diamond jubilee year.

The planting of the trees marks a new partnership between Wyre Forest District Council, Bewdley Town Council and the newly formed Friends of Northwood Lane public open spaces. The trees were provided through the support of Bewdley Town Councillor Jan Adams, who secured the trees from the Woodland Trust. Councillor Adams hopes that as many residents as possible will join the newly formed friends group and support the future development of this exciting programme of improvements.

To find out more or to get involved telephone Joe Scully on 01562 732981 or email him on joe.scully@wyreforestdc.gov.uk.

Congratulations to Paul Gittins on his MBE as announced in the New Year’s Honours list for services to the community and as a community first responder.

Editorial News

The Bridge is the community voice of Bewdley

It is free and delivered by volunteers to more than 4,600 homes every month

It's February already. The depths of winter upon us and an opportunity for reflection.

I'm thinking early on a dark, cold morning lying in bed. It's much warmer here and a great saving on winter fuel. That's my excuse at least until daylight and this thinking is using a lot of calories. Perhaps that is overdoing the excuses for not running around with my delightful little dog just yet. I'll wait until she wakes from her slumbers naturally and pondering is a quiet business we both enjoy at this time of year - a sort of semi - hibernation.

The emphasis of my pondering today is about "The Bridge". Yes it's our magazine, our community and that's where you come in. We invite you to join with us at this brilliant magazine and help us develop it even further into something stupendous. To help us move into the future with an offering everyone wants to read. We know most people look forward to the monthly arrival of the Bridge but we want to raise that figure to include even more. Do you know people who don't feel the Bridge offers them what they're looking for? If so please let us know how we could include them in our readership. We value your thoughts, views and involvement, so please let us know what you and your friends think. Well that's it. Now Kassy is awake, the sun is shining and there will be a bounce in our step after all that thinking. We will take our walk around the town, through the park and along the river banks to remind ourselves why we love Bewdley so much and how very lucky we are. Ruth

If you're looking to impress someone this Valentine's Day and don't want to spend a fortune, think how great it would be to have experts on hand for advice on planning a special evening. Firstly, Gok Wan could tell you how to dress yourself. Nigella would be a good one to listen to if you're planning a seductive supper – forget the calorie counter for the night. You can research the rules of love and impress your beloved with a few appropriate words of French or Italian tossed into the conversation at the right moment.

Finally, you could round off the evening on the sofa in front of a movie. A word to the wise – don't assume all women like romcoms or weepies; have a cracking horror film on standby and then if all else fails your paramour might just jump into your arms when there's a really scary bit.

You can, of course, source this evening from the library as in addition to books on the above subjects we have a selection of DVD's (horror and romcom) for a reasonable weekly fee. Enjoy it!

Tails of a Veterinary Practice

life at Riverside Vets as seen by Gavin the practice cat.

I have just returned to the vets following my vacation up the hill where my kind human lives. She has looked after me during the Christmas break and I love staying there. She is so kind and I get to meet her cats, bantams and fish. It is like staying in a zoo. I particularly enjoyed the warmth of the log burner and I have decided that I want one for the vets.

Luckily I stayed right at the top of a big hill and so when I heard humans talking about the rain and floods I knew I would be safe with no chance of getting my tail wet! I got to see how high the river level was when I returned to my flat and even my friends the geese looked concerned as they struggled to find some dry land to sit and watch the ducks and swans trying to cope with the flooded river.

One day I got very excited to see a large crowd outside my flat. I immediately thought they had come to visit me, as I am a famous author. However to my disappointment, they had all come to see Keith, a seal who made the long journey to visit us in Bewdley. I watched out of my window and saw Keith on many occasions and soon made friends with “her”. I felt sorry for a seal who seemed such a long way from the sea and also because she had a boy’s name! I do hope that Keith can get back to the sea safely and I wonder what other exciting visitors we might see in Bewdley in the future! More from me next month Gavin the cat

Behind the baton

At this time of a new year, one reflects both on the year just gone and looks forward to the one to come. From a musical point of view, I have been to many enjoyable concerts this year including a couple at Symphony Hall (a truly spectacular concert venue) and a magnificent day out at the Upton Blues Festival - a balmy day of beer, blues and baking sunshine! As ever, I've also enjoyed some super local bands and musicians performing around the town.

However, one of the highlights for me this year was an impromptu opportunity to see John Lill - one of the finest British Pianists of his generation performing the incredible Liszt B Minor Piano Sonata. I first heard this piece live at the Bewdley Festival, played brilliantly by Mark Padmore in the unforgiving acoustic of the Ramada Hotel, maybe some of you were there. John Lill's performance was in the chapel of Christchurch, Oxford, and we were very lucky to be sat on the front row, literally in line with the keyboard. The Liszt itself is an epic work, one of those pieces of music that takes you on an emotional journey but leaves you at peace with its quiet closing chords.

Unlike the Vivaldi of December's column, it is maybe not as immediately accessible but once you get to know it, it's an exhilarating listen. To be so close to such a great musician playing a masterpiece of the piano repertoire was a real treat.

Looking forward to the new year, I hope to continue to promote local live music through this column, I'm sure, as with last year, we shall have plenty of musical treats to enjoy in our lovely town. In the meantime, wish you all a Happy and Musical New Year!

Alastair

Bewdley Museum

2012 was a very busy year for the museum, with over 140,000 visitors through the doors. Highlights included the Bewdley Stone Heritage Exhibition and the first Museum Cherry Festival, both of which celebrated aspects of local history. Almost on a daily basis, readers may have spotted long lines of ‘Evacuees’, from as far as Coventry and Gloucester, marching to Bewdley Station. All these formed just a small part of a full programme of on-going activities delivered by staff and volunteers.

Over the course of the festive season, visitors were entertained by live music, pantomimes and the annual visit of Father Christmas – much to the delight of excited children. The inaugural Wassail event started with a parade along the riverside before entering the Museum – The Shambles has surely never seen anything quite like it!

The winter maintenance programme has now commenced so the Museum is closed to the public until Good Friday with limited opening hours during half term week, Monday 18th to Sunday 24th February, for activities. Currently, staff are gearing up for another busy year ahead with a full programme of exhibitions, education visits and events being planned. For information and opening times please refer to our website www.wyreforestdc.gov.uk/museum or phone 0845 603 5699. What’s on in February

Bewdley Youth Café Trustees needed

The trustees wish to thank Derek Killingworth for all his efforts to keep the Café going over the past 5 years. He has resigned due to ill health and we wish him well and back to good health.

His departure leaves a hole in the management of the Café and we would like to invite new trustees to help the Café on to the next stage in its development. We are going to expand the board to include people with a variety of experience and are particularly seeking people with backgrounds in the financial, legal and fundraising sectors.

The Bewdley Youth Café provides a safe and secure place for the young people of the town to meet before and after school. It is staffed by volunteers, a part time manager and several Breakfast Club supervisors. Funding comes from a variety of sources including many local supporters and residents who are very generous. Two concerts at St Anne’s and the Cock & Magpie before Christmas raised £1,100, which was gratefully received. If you are interested in lending a hand please contact us at the Café. Upcycling comes to Bewdley: New Candles from Old

Thank you to those recyclers who brought your used candle stubs into St Anne's Church. Here are some results of my recent experimenting with wax; the colours accidentally mimicking Autumn's palette - unconscious inspiration, perhaps? My candles filled some Christmas stockings and went into churches and raffles, keeping the circle turning.

If you have any unwanted candle wax or tea light remains, please drop them into the box in St Anne's Church vestibule. Or perhaps you feel inspired to have a go yourself.

Bewdley Wassail Festival Bewdley Wassail Festival took place at the Community Orchard, Jubilee Gardens on Saturday 5th January, funded by Wyre Forest District Council and coordinated by Bewdley Development Trust and Bewdley Museum. Local food producers and the Bewdley Apple Co-operative provided food and refreshments on the day.

The event included a torch lit parade lead by Bewdley Mayor, Cllr John Latham and performances by local band Wytchwood Morris of traditional dances and songs. The crowds were invited to join in wassailing the apple trees. School children took part dressed in traditional rag jackets made in workshops at the Museum prior to the event. The Wassail Cup, commissioned by Wytchwood Morris was made and designed by local wood turner Rebecca Harris using recycled cherry wood.

Apple wassailing goes back to Celtic times and has been recorded in all the apple tree growing regions of England; its purpose to ‘wake up’ the tree at the start of the year, to encourage the sap to start flowing, to appease the spirit of the tree, and, thereby, encourage a good crop of fruit. Ellie Hooper of Bewdley Development Trust said: “This is the first time the Wassail has taken place in Bewdley and we were overwhelmed by the numbers who turned out. We are already planning a bigger and better event for next year. This was another fantastic community event where visitors, residents and children took part and proved what a great town we are.” Ellie Hooper

To the Editor

Our grateful thanks to the Environment Agency operatives and security staff who have diligently and cheerfully looked after our riverside communities all over Christmas and the New Year. Those of us who live behind the demountable barriers and the temporary defences have felt safe and secure knowing that these good people have given up so much of their Christmas holiday time on our behalf. I do hope that should we see them again this year, some of us who live alongside the river might be moved to offer them a cup of tea now and again. Mary Lynch Bewdley Residents’ Flood Committee

Bridge Deliverers needed

One or two deliverers have had to give up their rounds recently, usually because of ill health. We therefore need deliverers for: •

Lyttleton Rd

The streets at the bottom of Park Lane

Parts of Cleobury Rd (especially around the Hop Pole area)

We also like to keep a waiting list of people who will deliver the Bridge should others drop out.

We can be contacted at paul@mann-family.co.uk or janet@mann-family.co.uk and at 01299 400794 if anyone wants to volunteer or ask any questions about what is involved.

We also like to be contacted if anyone is not receiving their copy of the Bridge any more or if you are a deliverer and have any temporary problems with delivering (other than normal holidays).

At the beginning of each month, and often for much longer, copies can be picked up from St Anne's, if you don't receive one. Please ask at the cafe. The church is open until 2 o'clock except on Monday.

With many thanks to all deliverers Janet and Paul Mann.

TOWN COUNCIL NEWS

TOWN COUNCIL MEETING HELD ON 7TH JANUARY 2013 Councillor Paul Gittins MBE

The Mayor opened the meeting by giving his congratulations to Councillor Paul Gittins who had been awarded an MBE in the New Year’s Honours for his public and community service in the town. Born and bred in Bewdley, Cllr Paul Gittins has been a Town Councillor for 19 years and has been Mayor on two occasions, the last being in 2010/11. Also since 2005 he has acted as a “community first responder” and has attended well over 500 incidents in the last year alone. Town Council Budget

Traditionally at this meeting in January, the Town Council agrees its budget for the next financial year and in so doing sets the level of Council Tax that will be levied upon householders for its services. However due to changes which the government are making to Council Tax regulations, it was uncertain how those would impact on District Councils such as Wyre Forest who in turn could not confirm precisely how much money was available to Town/Parish Councils such as Bewdley. It was agreed to defer fixing the budget and Council Tax for a month until more information was available though there was a strong likelihood that the Town Council element of the overall tax bill would be increased – the first time for four years. Civic Awards

It was agreed that with the number of nominations for a civic award having fallen in recent years, this could realistically no longer be an annual occasion. Instead the awards would be given every four years with suitable publicity beforehand to encourage more nominations to be made. Bewdley Museum

The Council received a positive report from their representative on the Museum Management Committee as to finances and visitor numbers at the Museum. Future Town Council meetings

Town Council meetings are held at The Guildhall at 7.30pm on the first Monday of each month unless stated otherwise. The next meetings are: 4th February, 4th March, 1st April and (Tuesday) 7th May.

Minutes of Town Council and Planning Committee Meetings are posted on the Notice Boards outside the Mayor’s Parlour, in the Guildhall Entrance and Load Street Car Park. They are also available at the Library and at the Town Clerk’s Office and on the Town Council’s page of www.bewdley.org.uk

ROCK Pound the Bounds 5th May 2013

The annual "Pound-the-Bounds" organised walks have become one of the most important fund-raising events organised by the Rock Village Hall Committee. This year, Midlands Air Ambulance Charity have again teamed up with the organisers so walkers can take part in something they love and help raise funds for MAAC.

With walks for all abilities and all ages, across some of Britain’s most beautiful routes, this is a great day for all the family. Over 500 people cannot be wrong! Choose from walks of 6, 12, 18, or 25 miles or tackle the three mile treasure trail. All routes are way-marked and each walker given a directions sheet. Getting lost is almost impossible and help is only a phone-call away if required.

Marshalling and refreshment stations are situated strategically along all routes and progress of each participant is monitored throughout. Some of the terrain is quite demanding because of inclination, stiles and potential mud. But nature will be at its best! The 18 and 25 mile routes will take in a large part of the Wyre Forest, but all routes include a large variety of terrain and views. •

In the forest

With the seal still making visits up the river to Bewdley (and higher) at the time of writing, it seems that nature is always ready to prove that it has surprises up its sleeve.

Our local badgers usually get on quietly with their nocturnal foraging and hunting with only a few discrete digging holes showing where they have unearthed a pignut root or other tasty morsel in the fields. This winter however has seen large areas of our and neighbours’ land despoiled; the top 2 inches of turf rolled back from the soil below and sometimes pulled right away. I know that earthworms are the badgers’ favourite (or at least, most plentiful) food and this must have something to do with the answer. At a guess, the ground is so saturated with water that the earthworms and other mobile soil dwellers are forced up to the top layer and make easy pickings for the badgers using the turf-peeling technique. The Uncllys Farm Thursday volunteer group can now add “putting the badgers’ turf back” to their long and interesting list of countryside tasks! (As Sally, our farm manager, says, “think divot stomping without the polo match and dress code!”) Incidentally “Fauna Britannica” by Stefan Buczacki reveals that the name “badger” first appeared in the 16th century and came to supplant the older name “brock”, which went

back to the Celtic language. Another of our mammals to change its name is the rabbit, although it didn’t have a name at all in this country until Saxon times when it was introduced. The modern name was used only for the young, or kits, with “coney” being the correct name for the adult. The change came in the 18th century – who knows why? (Please let me know if you do!) I hope there will be some good, dry weather in which to enjoy the forest this month.

Health Walks continue every Tuesday and Sunday, meeting at the Forest Cafe at 10.30 for a 11am start. The walks are free, led by trained leaders, and are especially for those who wish to improve their fitness – perhaps after illness. They are very sociable occasions too and have a large following.

Forest Friends meet at 10am each Thursday in term time for an hour of forest activities for pre-school children and their carers run by Discovery Centre staff and volunteers. Meet at the Forest Cafe. £2 per child.

During half term there will be some family activities at the Community Discovery Centre. Please ring 01299 266929 for details.
