Church leaders put history behind them
A dark period in the history of Christianity in this country was remembered – and forgiven – in a special service at Bewdley Methodist Church last month (2 February). The service involved the leader of Methodism in Great Britain, the rectors of Bewdley and Kidderminster, local Methodist ministers, the Mayor of Bewdley, Coun. John Latham and his consort Mr Wilf Talbot, and representatives from many denominations in the area. In 1662, Rev Henry Oasland, was ejected as rector of Bewdley because of his Puritan convictions. At the same time, almost 2000 Puritan priests had to leave their churches, including Rev Richard Baxter of St Mary’s, Kidderminster. The service at our town’s Methodist church brought together Rev Oasland’s great-great-great-great-great-great grandson – Rev Dr Mark Wakelin, the current President of the Methodist Conference – and the successors to Oasland and Baxter, Rev Keith James of Bewdley and Rev Canon Owain Bell of Kidderminster (who is also an associate Methodist minister). In a spirit of reconciliation and friendship, past hurts were remembered, put in their historical context and forgiven, while the present and long-established partnerships between the denominations were celebrated and renewed. After the service, Rev Keith James led the Methodist president to St Anne’s church, passing the Catholic church which was originally the site of a Presbyterian meeting house where Henry Oasland eventually returned to Bewdley as the first resident priest. There was once an Oasland Way in Bewdley and Dr Wakelin would like to see a street named after his illustrious forebear once more!

We have so many talented people in Bewdley and the surrounding areas many of whom hide their light under a bushel but we're coming to seek you out. You can inspire the rest of us to discover or develop our own talents and remind us that we are all special.
We're lucky to have a full range of seasons in this country but it would be good to have an end to the surfeit of rain we have been experiencing. March is such a magical start to spring with a sudden surge of growth in the countryside and our gardens. It's amazing to think that such a small lifeless-looking particle as a seed can produce a marvellous range of beautiful flowers and food for us to enjoy. Hellebores, crocus and snowdrops have been delightful despite the weather. Primroses and daffodils are the current stars of the show with so many more to come. Our river gives us an extra dimension to that which most communities can enjoy. Swans, ducks and geese are displaying their lovely courtship rituals and birds are singing loudly in the trees while they busy themselves making nests for this year’s young.
The enthusiasm of wildlife is a constant in our lives and a reminder when we feel dispirited that there is always hope for the future and at the moment I'd settle for some sunshine. Ruth

Bewdley Walking Group Sunday 3rd. March, Leader: Phil Sealey. Meet at 1.45pm. in the garden on the east side of the river, just below Bewdley Bridge and adjacent to the pedestrian underpass beneath the bridge. The walk will start promptly at 2.00pm. and cover approximately 4-5 miles through Hall's Farm and then towards Wassell Wood and the intriguing earthworks. There are some stiles and the walk up to the earthworks is quite strenuous but this part of the walk is optional.

Lately I have been spending more time downstairs lazing in the surgery and listening to my humans talking. Normally I soon get bored and nod off, but the other day I found myself interested and managed to stay awake. It seems that the human’s government has come up with the good idea of making micro chipping for dogs compulsory. For a lot of reasons it makes sense to be able to trace a dog’s human as quickly as possible.
My humans in the surgery often tell me just how much time can be spent on trying to trace the owner of a lost dog and I know from my animal friends just how distressed they get when they are lost. I know many dogs and cats that have been micro chipped and they tell me it doesn’t take long and you don’t feel any pain. Also it didn’t cost their humans a great deal of money. If I was Prime Minister I would make it compulsory for all cats and dogs to be micro chipped, I would also make it compulsory for all cat owners to feed their cats fresh fish twice a week!! Please think about the safety of your dogs and cats and get them micro chipped as soon as possible. Gavin

As we welcome the onset of Spring, thoughts already turn to Easter which falls at the very end of March this year. It was Easter 30 years ago that I was first introduced to the wonders of Handel’s “Messiah” which was performed in Bath Abbey on alternate years. Messiah is actually focused more on the Easter story although of course, it is often performed at Christmas.
More on that another time because this month I want to focus on one of my favourite composers: J S Bach. The work that used to alternate with Messiah was Bach’s powerfully moving “St John Passion”. This is certainly a work that takes some getting to know and it’s written on an epic scale. It opens with one of Bach’s simmering orchestral introductions where the tension and excitement slowly builds leading up to the first explosive Choir entry. For those of you who don’t know the Bach Passions, they are a significant works combining many different sections from hymn-like Chorales, to gorgeous, lyrical arias for the soloists, intricately constructed recitative and explosive, triumphant Choruses.
That opening still tingles my spine every time I hear it and the same could be said of the majestic “Gratias Agimustibi” and “Donna Nobis Pacem” choruses from his Mass in B Minor. Once again, Bach masterfully builds the tension throughout the chorus and builds to a mighty climax in a blaze of trumpet and timpani.
I mention this because by the time you read this, I will have heard this work performed at the Forum Theatre in Malvern by the superb Armonico Consort. I always get excited about concerts, but I already know this will be one on my highlights for the year. I also mention it because there are plans afoot to bring some professional standard Live Bach to Bewdley and I hope to be able to tell you more about that in the coming months.

Small Stories to Change a Troubled World
'A different drum', one of Riding Lights Theatre Company's most inspirational plays, has been recreated for 2013 and is touring nationally. As we continue to adjust to the few changes we have had in the library over the past few weeks, we'd like to bring to your attention once again the magazine swap, which is still with us! Yes, it has hopped about the place just lately but as it works really well we're not about to stop it.
For the uninitiated, you bring any magazine that you've finished with, put them in our basket and choose another to take home and read. Many of our customers get a great deal of enjoyment from this simple system and in the current economic climate it makes a lot of sense.
Two requirements – the magazine you bring is in good condition and is less than a year old.
It's also worth knowing that we do have a selection of magazines available for reading in the library – staff will be happy to direct you to these. Our new cookery one is proving very popular, and in the children's area we have a magazine just for mothers of young children 'Gurgle'. So come along and have a look; you won't get chased out for reading instead of buying, and you don't have to endure a dental/medical examination afterwards!

A New Community Hub For Bewdley
Work continues apace at St George’s Hall with the erection of the new three storey extension to replace the 1960s building and the refurbishment of the larger main hall. We hope the construction work has not caused too much inconvenience to our neighbours or users of the Load Street car park. Thanks for your understanding.
Downstairs in the basement structural work is proceeding to convert the old boiler room into a more useable space. Meanwhile the hall has been stripped ready for total redecoration. A new ceiling, new lighting and heating will improve the hall’s appearance and comfort. We’ve been careful to design the hall to allow a new balcony in the future.
The whole new building will have a number of multi-purpose spaces of different sizes for short term hire or long term rent as well as the main hall. We are currently working on hire rates and will be publishing them in due course.
Now the construction is well underway we’re turning our attention to marketing and running the new community hub. We’re planning to open in the Summer once construction has been completed. We’ll announce a date nearer the time.
The new community hub has been designed to be used by all sorts of organisations for all different purposes. The Open Forum held in November has helped us understand the different types of activity the local community wants. Already local residents have approached us about a film club and there’s bound to be lots of other ideas. What Dedication! What would you most like to do at 6.30 on a dark cold rainy February morning? Well, quite a few people agreed to go and stand in Load Street and recite lines from a forthcoming drama. It was the only time Steve Conway the producer of Good Friday’s Passion Play could be sure that his cast wouldn’t be run over by traffic.
By 8.00 everyone was able to get back in the dry in the knowledge that the first stage of preparation for Good Friday had gone off successfully.

The refurbishment of St George's Hall opens up the opportunity of Bewdley having its own Community Cinema to screen limited-distribution new releases, movie classics and special-demand blockbusters.

Millennium Green Community Garden – Help Wanted!

Last year, money was raised to buy ten raised beds and plants and local families adopted a bed and looked after them through the summer. A bug hotel was built, daffodil bulbs have been planted along the fence line and 9 fruit trees have been added to the 2 that were already there.
In 2013 we want to get more people involved. Are you interested in helping out – growing a few plants on your window sill, looking after a bed, doing some litter picking or watering if we get any sun!? Three Friends And A Coffee Shop Called Clementines

This is a story about three friends who met and worked together at St. Wulstan’s school. They started there as dinner ladies (Gerry's stint was very brief) to fit in with family commitments and soon moved on to become teaching assistants at the same school. Loraine developed a sideline catering for friends and family often enlisting the help of Nicky and it was at one such event, the funeral of a very close friend's husband when Gerry was also helping, that a guest asked what the name of the company was. There wasn't one! This was the catalyst for their future together. Nicky and Loraine's children had all left school and Gerry's were rapidly getting to that stage. It was time to move on.
A property that Gerry and her husband had bought eight years earlier was between tenants and seemed to be the perfect place to start a business. With only a moment’s hesitation, "Can we really do this", the friends decided to go into business together. This was January 2012 and without a backward glance or a business plan they started work to convert the house doing most of the work themselves involving their family members, most of their friends and many tradespeople. During this period people stopped to tell them stories going back to the 1930's when Mrs. Dalloway, the local midwife lived there. The house also had a tearoom downstairs at one time, a blind shop and a jeweler’s at other times and the girls think they have met a member from every family that has lived there since although the house is much older and must have many more stories to tell.
The coffee shop opened on the 31st. August last year and the stories have continued. One retired gentleman comes in every day and tells them it has transformed his life. A lady comes in regularly because they have developed a special menu for her as she has difficulty eating since a major illness and her confidence is rapidly increasing now. Amongst many others are the Halesowen ladies who call in weekly having found their niche and a group of health visitors were welcome recently when Gerry collapsed and they were able to assist her.
The girls have spent all or most of their lives in Bewdley and have a strong sense of identity with the area, which has given them so much. In return they are generous with what they give back to our community as well as making a living. Their areas of expertise have developed from their own particular interests. Loraine taking the lead in catering, sourcing delicious ingredients as ethically as possible while Nicky has created the lovely decor. Gerry is known for her delightful way of getting exactly what is needed and they say she could sell "ice to eskimos".
In October, they won the Bewdley Harvest Soup challenge and at Christmas, the Best Window display. They say they have a much more sympathetic understanding and appreciation of other businesses now and have nothing but praise for local entrepreneurs who have been so helpful towards them.
I think the secret of their success is their enthusiasm and attention to detail. There is plenty of laughter, tears, enjoyment and respect in their relationship with each other and a warm welcome to everyone they meet (Ed. If you would like to tell your story please contact us at editorial!)

Bewdley Passion Play 2013 A Beginner’s Guide
What is a Passion Play?
It’s a dramatic presentation of the ‘Passion’ of Jesus Christ – that is his suffering, trial and death by crucifixion.
Is that a new thing?
Not really – they probably have their origin in the worship of the Church, especially in Austria & Germany around the 10th century. By the 15th century they had become productions run by groups of citizens – guilds and actors – who performed in public places rather than in church buildings. Extra material was often added to the basic story – and the tradition of Passion Plays had now reached countries like England and places like Bewdley.
And then?
The tradition began to fade - the Reformation in the 16th century did not help! However the flame still burned in places like Oberammergau where a Passion Play has been performed in that Bavarian village since the 17th century – the villagers believed they had been spared from the Plague because they had performed a Passion Play. Their productions are performed every ten years and attract audiences from around the world. There’s been a more recent revival of interest in this country, for example the 2006 Manchester Passion Play was featured on television – and actor Michael Sheen starred in one in Port Talbot in 2011.
So what is happening in Bewdley?
On Good Friday this year – 29th March 2013 – Load Street will become a theatre, for our own Passion Play. The play starts at 2.30pm on the Severnside South side of Bewdley Bridge and then the action moves along Load Street, finishing outside the east end of St Anne’s by 3pm.
What about the traffic?
There is a short road closure which will begin at 2.15pm and end at 3.15pm, from Beales Corner to the top of Load Street – it will ensure that the Play can take place safely.
Anything else?
The Play is performed entirely by local people. Anyone and everyone are welcome to come and see it – there’s no charge – just turn up and follow the action. Bewdley Methodist Church - Half Century for Local Organist
Following a service to celebrate the visit of the President of the Methodist Conference, Revd Dr Mark Wakelin, the minister of Bewdley Methodist Church, Revd Linda Catlow presented Neil Sollom with an award to celebrate his 50 years as church organist.
Neil was born and grew up in Wribbenhall where he was taught to play the piano and organ by Norman Watkins and was allowed to use the organ at All Saints church for practice.
He began playing the organ for services at the Methodist church in High Street as a 13-year-old when he was volunteered by his mother Nancy, a church member, for what he was told would be a temporary period of ‘a few months’.
Neil’s other great passion has been rugby and he played for Kidderminster Carolians for many years and is a past President of the Club. This summer he will be in Australia following the Lions’ Tour and will be unable to play for church services for a couple of months.
Music at Bewdley Methodist church is provided by way of a traditional pipe organ, single manual with pedals, supplemented by a multi-voice Clavinova electric piano. Services feature a mix of traditional hymns and modern worship songs.
Neil says: “When I started playing the organ for services I was part of a team of three, which was an ideal way to gain experience without the pressure of playing weekly. Celebrate the Equinox!
We don’t normally take much notice of the Equinox, and many – perhaps even most of us, don’t really know what it is. To explain, briefly: we are all aware that it takes a day for the earth to revolve around its own axis, and it takes a whole year for us to complete our orbit around the sun. We also know that the tilt of the axis gives us our seasons. Well, twice in that year in Spring and Autumn, the tilt is neutralised and the sun shines directly down upon Earth’s Equator. It happens this year on March 20th when up here in the northern hemisphere, our days are getting gradually longer. It happens again, on September 22nd, when our days are getting shorter. On those two ‘equinoctial’ days, there are 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of darkness everywhere, over all the Earth. While we are aware of the enormous inequalities that exist around the world, you may find it fascinating to contemplate the Equinoxes as moments when, in one very fundamental way, we who share the planet, north, south, east or west, are all equal: equal in terms of the length of our day.You may like to think of us all being ‘Equal under the Sun’. Perhaps, on those days, you may feel it appropriate to consider how we are all equal in this single respect, and compare it with all the manifold ways in which we are very un-equal. Maybe, on March 20th (at 11 am), you might like to celebrate our world-wide equality in the sense of our shared destiny and our interdependence, while also doing something about our world-wide inequality. Somebody has been thinking about this very carefully, and has much more to say about it. If you go to the website www.eq4u.org you will find an Equinox-based project – EQ – that hopes to make best use of the special quality of these twin days. TOWN COUNCIL MEETING HELD ON 4TH FEBRUARY 2013 Town Council Budget The Town Council set its budget for 2013/14. In comparison with the County and District Councils and the Police and Fire Authorities, the Town Council has a very small budget. Indeed of the overall Council Tax bill for an average “Band D” household of £1510.00 only £21.52 is levied by the Town Council. During the last four years that figure has remained unchanged despite inflation. However with many changes taking place as to who is responsible for which service under the “localism” agenda and the likely loss of some funding in a year’s time, the Town Council has reluctantly felt obliged to increase what is charged. That will rise to £23.59 ie by £2.07 for the year which is equivalent to 4 pence a week. This would have been more if savings had not been made to office running costs. Climate Week Initiative Councillors decided to support the “Climate Week” national campaign due to take place between 4th and 10th March when it is hoped large numbers of events and activities will be organised by individuals, clubs and community groups. The theme will be to create a more sustainable low-carbon future. The Town Council will play its part by reducing the amount of paperwork distributed to Councillors who can, if they wish in the future, receive all information electronically. Parking Restrictions for Wedding and Funeral Vehicles It was agreed to give some support to initial consultation being carried out by the County Council as highway authority that would enable official wedding cars and hearses to be allowed some leeway when attending wedding and funerals when there was little alternative but to park on the road which was subject to waiting restrictions. It was important that no obstruction should be caused. Future Town Council meetings
Town Council meetings are held at The Guildhall at 7.30pm on the first Monday of each month unless stated otherwise. The next meetings are: 4th March, 8th April and (Tuesday) 7th May.
The Annual Town Meeting (open to all residents registered on the electoral roll when local issues can be debated informally) will take place on Monday 15th April at 7.00pm.
The Annual Meeting of the Town Council (when the new Mayor is elected) will take place on Friday 10th May at 7.00pm.
Minutes of Town Council and Planning Committee Meetings are posted on the Notice Boards outside the Mayor’s Parlour, in the Guildhall Entrance and Load Street Car Park. They are also available at the Library and at the Town Clerk’s Office and on the Town Council’s page of www.bewdley.org.uk

Midlands Air Ambulance Charity Saving Lives by Saving Time
ROCK Pound the Bounds 5th May 2013
The annual "Pound-the-Bounds" organised walks have become one of the most important fund-raising events organised by the Rock Village Hall Committee. This year, Midlands Air Ambulance Charity have again teamed up with the organisers so walkers can take part in something they love and help raise funds for MAAC.
With walks for all abilities and all ages, across some of Britain’s most beautiful routes, this is a great day for all the family. Over 500 people cannot be wrong! Choose from walks of 6, 12, 18, or 25 miles or tackle the three mile treasure trail. All routes are way-marked and each walker given a directions sheet. Getting lost is almost impossible and help is only a phone-call away if required.
Marshalling and refreshment stations are situated strategically along all routes and progress of each participant is monitored throughout. Some of the terrain is quite demanding because of inclination, stiles and potential mud. But nature will be at its best! The 18 and 25 mile routes will take in a large part of the Wyre Forest, but all routes include a large variety of terrain and views. •

March In the forest
After the long winter things are moving again. I wonder what kind of year we will have? If you feel that you are in need of a bit more sunshine and friendly weather this year you are in good company. I’m not sure that conditions over the last few years have allowed many species in the plant, animal or other kingdoms to thrive, and for some of the rarer ones which face all kinds of threats another year of bad weather could be disastrous.
Many farmland birds such as the skylark and lapwing have been declining for decades, mainly because of the more intensive use of land, with pesticides and excessive tidiness seeing the end of those organisms and habitats not central to our food production. (See www.rspb.org.uk/advice/ helpingbirds/decline/nationaltrends for more on this.)
More recently numbers of some woodland species have also been hit. The rapid hammering of the lesser spotted woodpecker can still be heard occasionally in Wyre, but it has been put on the Red List of species which are the most seriously endangered in the UK. It has suffered a national decline of 73% since the 1980s and has been the subject of a research project to find out why. You can read more about this by looking at the articles from the Wyre Forest Study Group at www.wyreforest.net. The RSPB website tells us that “it tends to frequent the tops of trees, searching for larvae, spiders and wood-boring insects on smaller branches”. Mature oak trees with a large amount of dead wood are particularly good habitat but orchards and stream sides, and even gardens, are used for foraging too. Now is the time to look for it, before there are too many leaves on the trees. They will continue
to drum until they mate and start to nest halfway through April.
Accurate information is vital for conservation work. Your results from the Big Garden Birdwatch in January are an example. Bird ringing also provides data on the size and health of populations and the movement of individuals. If you would like to see how it is done come to the Forestry Commission’s Discovery Centre 2 (by the ponds) at Callow Hill on Saturday 16th March between 8.45 and 9.45am when local members of the British Trust for Ornithology will be checking the nets set up the night before. The birds are handled gently by trained ringers and released unharmed.
Younger children may be more interested in visiting the forest on Good Friday, 29th March, between 10.30am and 2.30pm for the Easter Eggstravaganza – a challenge to search the woods and solve clues to earn a chocolate egg! It costs £3 per child and all children must be accompanied by an adult.
