Bewdley Tennis Club: another Bewdley success story
In an era when Andy Murray is flying the flag for British tennis, Bewdley Tennis Club is serving up its own fair share of winners by helping put the sport on the map in Worcestershire.
Eight of its 15 teams gained promotion in local leagues last season - a reflection not just on the talent across a range of ages and abilities at the club but also on its facilities, which are rated among the best in the county. More important than team success, however, is the opportunity the club provides to townsfolk of all ages and abilities to play this wonderful sport, offering fun and exercise in an enjoyable and friendly environment.
Voted Hereford and Worcester Club of the Year in 2012, Bewdley Tennis Club will chalk up its 90th anniversary next year with a thriving membership exceeding 300. Perhaps most encouragingly, its junior section is one of its crowning achievements with children as young as five getting their first taste of the sport.
Head Coach Geoff Barrie has been instrumental in driving forward coaching at the club and heads up instruction with an emphasis on accessibility and inclusion, hence sessions ranging from 'term time tennis for women' aimed at newcomers to the game plus new initiatives such as 'dads and lads' sessions and 'tots tennis' for four to eight year olds.
“The most important thing about any club or sport is making people welcome, regardless of age or ability, and Bewdley prides itself on that”, said Barrie. “It has a good mix of members and abilities, so it is easy to fit in and also a great way to meet new friends and also stay healthy.”
A new member who enjoyed a women’s coaching session recently: “The club made me feel very welcome with existing members making time to play with us newcomers, which was great because a few were a bit nervous at first. That gave everyone confidence to join in.” The club holds a number of Open Days in the year and extends an invitation to anyone to come down and have a go and see what it's like. The Bridge is the community voice of Bewdley
It is free and delivered by volunteers to more than 4,600 homes every month
Welcome to an action-packed edition of the Bridge in an action-packed month for Bewdley. Our What’s On page is bursting with opportunities to shake off the winter gloom and get out and about, perhaps even to try something new. All the clubs and societies regularly featured in the Bridge offer a warm welcome to newcomers. The Discover Bewdley Spring Fair, a firm fixture on the town’s calendar, promises a weekend of delights, whether visiting an exhibition, choosing goods from a market stall, testing out the beers on offer at the Mug House, clambering up St Anne’s tower to admire the view or joining in a walk. Use our centrefold as your guide for the Bewdley Churches History Trail, a fascinating tour around some well-known landmarks and hidden gems. This month we have been out and about meeting some of Bewdley’s residents. Postwoman Natasha Carson–Brown gives us an insight into her job, sharing her enthusiasm for this key role in the community. Do, please, let us know of anyone else in the town you think we would like to meet. We have also been talking to Peter Styles, who set up a business when still in his teens and would love to hear from more of Bewdley’s young entrepreneurs. Contact us through the email address below to arrange an interview. Bewdley’s tree wardens are asking readers to become tree spotters. See their article for information about how to take part in the Natural History Museum Urban Tree Survey, aimed at discovering which tree species are growing in the UK. Let’s get Bewdley on the Urban Tree map. I hope you enjoy a merry May. Gill

NATASHA CARSON-BROWN, POSTWOMAN I’ve lived in Bewdley for three years now, ever since Darren, my husband, spotted the “For Sale” notice on his rounds one day. (Yes, he’s a postman too!) We managed to buy the house and haven’t looked back since. We both love it here and love our jobs too.
Mine starts at 9.00 in the sorting office in Kidderminster. Inside that great big building next to Sainsburys is an area divided into bays. Each bay corresponds to a postie’s Walk, sometimes called a Duty. The bay is divided up again into streets then again into each house. Yes, your house has a little slot all to itself. As we all get into work, we do the sorting; if there’s been people on early shifts it might already be done. Then we load up our bags or trolleys and set off. The bays are arranged into a logical route for us so that our post is more or less already in order; the walk is in the form of a loop so that we end up back at the starting point, which is probably our car. I’m lucky; I do the Bark Hill area and end up quite close to home. And by the time I do get back I will have walked seven and a half miles. So no, I don’t need to watch my figure!
What do I like about the job? Time on my own; it gives me time to think. If I set off with a problem it’s usually sorted by the end of my walk. Then there’s being outside in the fresh air. That’s lovely. So are the people; I really enjoy chatting to people I meet and they’re all very friendly. What don’t I like? Top of the list is dogs. You never know what they’re going to do and I’ve had several close encounters. It’s a good job I have a thick jacket and stout boots. I need them! Then there’s horrible letterboxes with loose bits of wire or strong springs that snap on my fingers. And letterboxes at the bottom of the door so that I have to take off my sack and grovel around by my ankles. Weather doesn’t bother me – those sensible clothes again – but I really hate slippery snow or ice. And I do sometimes feel pretty tired by the end of the week. But I wouldn’t change my job for anything.

Urban Tree Survey
Community News
How would you like to help put Bewdley on the Map? It's there already, you say? Not on the Urban Tree Survey Map it isn't – not at the time of writing. The Natural History Museum is running an Urban Tree Survey which aims at discovering which tree species are growing in the UK. As most urban trees are in private gardens the best way to find out this information is by asking the residents – you and me. Please help. Only if we know what is growing in our towns can we take effective action to protect our urban trees and our urban environment. How do you do the survey? Well, it isn't difficult if you have a computer or access to one. Go to the Natural History Museum website and put 'Urban Tree Survey' in the search box. Or do what I did and ask Google to find the right page by entering 'Urban Tree Survey' in its search box. Once you are there, you can get all the information on how to complete the survey with help where needed for tree identification. Give it a try and let us see if we can get Bewdley on the Tree Map. School pupils can also take part with learning resources aimed at Key Stage 2 (ages 7 – 11). Tell your teacher! This is a good time to do the survey as trees are coming into leaf and identification is easier. If you need any help in identifying trees ask Chris Wilmot or Gren Jones your Tree Wardens via the Town Clerk. His email address is townclerk@bewdley.org.uk

Holds a walk on the first Sunday of each month, meeting at 1.45pm.for a prompt start at 2.00pm. The meeting and start point for these walks is the garden on the east side of the river just below the Bewdley bridge. Sunday 5th May: A walk of 4-5 miles, including some stiles, in the area of Wharton Park. Leader: Anne Faloon/Sue Marston Sunday 2nd June: A walk of approximately 5 ½ miles to Coopers Mill Bridge. Leader: Keith Simcox News from Bewdley Library Just a few lines to tell you how our Arts and Crafts community is thriving. The result of our successful courses last year, our resident group, Crafty Ladies, is going strong. These ladies meet fortnightly in the library to work on and support each other in their chosen craft activities. Our course provision has diversified into jewellery recently and two groups have just finished a wirework course, which they thoroughly enjoyed. At time of writing, we are hoping to run a dressmaking/sewing course shortly, so keep an eye out to see what’s going on next time you pop in. Of course we also have numerous books relating to various crafts on our shelves and these have always been very popular in Bewdley; no sooner does a new knitting or sewing book come in stock that it’s taken out by some eager crafter. So don’t just sit there watching it on the telly – get a book out and give it a go! Kay Sanderson

Meeting Bewdley’s young entrepreneurs:
Peter Styles, 21, set up his apple juicing business when he was 19. He can often be seen at Bewdley’s produce market.
Why set up a juicing business? I didn’t get the grades I needed for university first time round, so found myself with an unplanned gap year. I wanted the time to be useful and I’d always liked the idea of making something to sell.
A cider maker friend got me wondering how easy small scale production would be - just as a hobby during the autumn. He, along with my Dad, and the Wyre Community Land Trust helped me get the project going.
What are the best bits? Tasting a new juice straight from the press is great! Also the look on people’s faces when they try it. ''Hey, it tastes just like an apple'' is definitely the most common response. It's true, it's apple without the crunch.
I've also really enjoyed having a greater involvement with the local community, like the produce market and, of course, it was good when our juice was taken by the Secretary of State at DEFRA to be served at a Cabinet Meeting in Downing Street. Managing a project and people has made me choose a different course at university.
Challenges? Keeping up with the pace of the initial development was tough. It started as an idea, and developed within days to a business venture with a few helping hands. I had to teach myself everything before explaining to anyone helping how it's done, so we could move on as quickly as possible. Surprises along the way? You can get pink apple juice! Who knew that?
What advice would you give to other budding entrepreneurs? Anyone young with an idea should talk to as many people as they can and make use of all that invaluable help, advice and contacts. Check around for any local grants available, and look at national funding like The Prince’s Trust or National Lottery funding.
I'd also say there's a lot of pressure on young people to go to university, but academia isn't for everyone. If you've got an idea or you need experience before you try something yourself, then go for it. If it's not successful, you've had time and experience to decide what your next path is.
What next? I now share responsibilities for the juicing business with my family’s farm, as I decided I would go to university. I may pick things back up after my degree, but I've got a placement year with a food company, Mornflake, and then my final year of study before that. I'm still very interested in fruit drinks though, so other juices or maybe cordial could be the next thing for Son & Styles.

The Passion Play
Community News
Bewdley’s first Passion Play – the story of Jesus’ trial and crucifixion – took place on Good Friday, 29th March. It was set in the town centre from Severnside South to the top of Load Street outside St Anne’s Church. Director Steve Conway said: “It’s been unbelievable. I’ve had emails and texts from all over the country from people who visited Bewdley to say how good they thought it was and that they were moved by the performance”.
Here are some of the huge crowd’s reactions.
“Wow – look at the crowds in Load Street!” “We loved the music”.
“At that last bit, I found myself filling up with tears – it was so moving” “Pity about the sound. I thought it was fantastic, though”. “I couldn’t always see what was going on. I suppose that’s because so many people turned up”
“It all went quiet at that bit where they put Jesus on the cross then lifted him up. Then the hymn started and I couldn’t help crying”.
“I hope they’re going to do it again next year”. (pictures by Gary Mayner)

Discover Bewdley Spring Fair 2013:
Visit an exhibition celebrating the Arley Ferry
The grand old lady of the Severn can be seen in her past glory on Sunday May 5th between 10am and 4pm at 5 Dog Lane, Bewdley, her last resting place. Residents Penny and David Griffiths first sited the prow in their front garden in 2008 and, such was the level of interest, Penny has created an information board to give passing visitors an insight into the importance the ferry played in the lives of villagers of Arley and Bewdley. An exhibition now includes written memories left by local people of the Arley Ferry whether as school children, young soldiers heading off to the war or holiday makers. Gifts to the exhibition include the ferry’s original anchor and the Pound Green sign which pointed to her operational site plus rare photographs of the ferry given by the daughters of Bert Evans, one of the last ferrymen. Penny says “It is really satisfying to think that we saved this little bit of history with the prow and now she still “sails on” bringing smiles and happy memories to so many people”. For more information call David on 01299 404912 or email pennygriffiths@tiscali.co.uk
“The ferry’s last journey as she arrives in Bewdley in the 1980s with Bert Evans, one of the last ferrymen.”

St George’s Hall Appeal Launched
An appeal for top up funding of £150,000 was launched on St George’s Day 23rd April by SGH Venue Management, the new company set up to run St George’s Hall when it opens in the summer. The £800,000 raised so far has been used on improving the fabric of the building, making it sound, fully accessible, secure, warm and well lit. Our vision is for St George's Hall to be the best community and arts centre in the area. It’s right in the heart of Bewdley for everyone to use. Money is now needed to fit out the building with top-quality equipment including: • flexible theatre-style seating • lighting and sound systems to support live performance • projection and sound facilities for films • digital support for streaming of live theatre and sporting events • chairs, tables, projectors and other equipment for meeting rooms • chairs, tables, and other items for the new café • exhibition display panels with professional lighting Why all this stuff?
A properly equipped St George's Hall will be able to accommodate activities such as festivals; fairs; regular drama, dance and literary performances; a community cinema; and streamed-in live culture and sport. It will be a hub for the people of Bewdley and the many community groups to use for meetings and events, as well as supporting the local economy by attracting new visitors. What can you do?
If you would like to support this new, exciting venture please make a donation NOW. Behind The Scenes At Bewdley Festival Your invitation to become involved.
Having just celebrated its twenty-fifth year, the ever growing success story that is Bewdley Festival is now well known in the town. Over the years, its original objective of bringing “the best out of the town and the best to the town” has showcased many international and national artists, as well as featuring much regional and local talent.
In addition to music, comedy, drama, poetry and art, last year saw the introduction of a one-day Youth Festival and a full Book Week. And, as ever, there was OctoberFest, a whole month of live music, talks, crafts, food events, quizzes and exhibitions in and around the town.
What is not so well known is that Festival, is reliant on a group of dedicated volunteers and generous sponsors and has only one part-time paid member of staff. A registered charity, Festival does not aim to make a profit, but must nonetheless ensure that all its costs are covered and a suitable contingency fund retained to ensure its future.
Organising and staging the annual event costs around £100,000 – artists’ fees and expenses, venue hire, sound and lighting, publicity and advertising are all obvious costs, but there are also other, not so obvious, costs such as performing rights royalties on music performances.
As well as ticket sales, a valuable source of additional revenue is the “Eat Bewdley Raffle”, a unique fundraiser that last year featured sixty-six food-related prizes generously donated by a range of local businesses. If you are interested in the Arts and would like to get involved, Bewdley Festival welcomes new sponsors and volunteers to help behind the scenes and front of house with a wide range of tasks. Why not get involved? admin@bewdleyfestival.org.uk 01299 404808 www.bewdleyfestival.org.uk

TOWN COUNCIL NEWS
TOWN COUNCIL MEETING HELD ON 8TH APRIL 2013
Bewdley Museum It was reported that visitor numbers at the Museum (operated by the District Council) remained good and indeed were higher than in the equivalent period last year. Exhibitions are set up and ready for the Spring Opening and for which there is still a need for more volunteers.
Cycling Safety Councillors heard of problems involving young people cycling on the pavements in the town centre which, as well as being dangerous, is illegal. The risk of injury especially to those pedestrians who cannot react quickly to get out of the way was highlighted. The matter had been raised with the Police, who had agreed to work in conjunction with local schools to run a campaign specifically to target cyclists in relation to safety and responsibility.
Lengthsman Scheme The Town Council has agreed once again to enter into an agreement with the County Council to take part in their Lengthsman Scheme. This provides funding for the Town’s Lengthsman to carry out small tasks to improve highway safety and visibility. This includes notifying house owners to cut back vegetation, which may overhang the pavement or footway, removing vegetation, which may cover road signs, and more recently the regular moving of the Vehicle Activated (Speed) Sign to designated sites around the town, where speeding may be a problem. Bewdley Development Trust Councillors received a summary report from the Development Trust as to their activities of late including progress with St George’s Hall. There was a call for the Trust and the Council to work in cooperation with one another and a meeting will be set up shortly to review current arrangements between the two bodies.
Town Centre Flowers The Council agreed that following the completion of the paving and lighting works in Load Street, it should work with the District Council to look at opportunities for improved planting and landscaping. It was hoped this could be timed for the coming summer season.
Future Town Council meetings Town Council meetings are held at The Guildhall at 7.30pm on the first Monday of each month unless stated otherwise. The next meetings are: 7th May (Tuesday), 3rd June, 1st July and 5th August. The Annual Meeting of the Town Council (when the new Mayor is elected) will take place on Friday 10th May at 7.00pm. Agendas and Minutes of Town Council and Planning Committee Meetings are posted on the Notice Boards outside the Mayor’s Parlour, in the Guildhall Entrance and by the Library Entrance and on the Town Council’s page of www.bewdley.org.uk Minutes are also available at the Library and at the Town Clerk’s Office. May in the forest
Those of you who know the forest well will know where to look for drifts of bluebells and lilies of the valley this month, as the year heads towards the time of peak growth. Damp stream banks are covered in the lush, garlicky-smelling leaves and white flowers of ramsons, and woodland edges or hedgerows shelter the garlic mustard or Jack-by-the-hedge, where orange tip butterflies love to lay their single eggs. There are insects everywhere, and your attention may be attracted to groups of the beautiful longhorn moth with its bronze wings and delicately swept back antennae dancing among the oak leaves in sunny glades. Most of the summer migrant birds should have arrived last month and by now
they will be nesting. Spotted flycatchers arrive rather later, and like the redstart, will be frequenting the edges of the Wyre’s oak woods where there is access to grazing land rich in flying insects. For both species breeding success can be greatly increased by providing nest boxes attached to trees. Our attempts to do just that at Uncllys Farm have certainly given a boost to bluetit and great tit populations, so we have learnt that you need to block the nest hole until May to give the migrants a chance. I hope that this year the efforts of volunteers to make, clean and check the bird boxes will be rewarded with some little families of the rarer woodland birds.
May’s vigorous new grass growth allows us to turn out our cattle on to fresh pastures, which will be a very welcome change after a very long winter necessitating reliance on hay and haylage. Look out for frolicking Dexter mums and new calves in meadows along the Dowles Brook and the Wyre orchards! Special events this month
Health Walks continue every Tuesday and Sunday, meeting at Callow Hill (the Forest Café) at 10.30 for an 11am start.
Saturday 18th May - Everything you need to know about fruit trees. This one day intensive course will cover all aspects of growing your own apples, pears, cherries and plums from planting to grafting, rootstock selection, pollination, choice of varieties, pruning and harvesting. The day will include practical work in local orchards. Tutor: Wade Muggleton. Uncllys Farm, Bewdley, DY12 2LR. 10am to 4pm. Course fee £40. Information and bookings: 01299 488083, info@wyreclt.org.uk
Discovery Centre Open Day Every weekday from 27th to 31st May, 11am to 3pm. Come and look round the Community Discovery Centre. Spot our lovely new art works, explore our hands-on displays, watch the birds from our hide windows and follow the Sensory Trail. The unique ‘Wild Side of Wyre’ deer museum will also be open. There is something to interest everyone and it’s FREE!
Thursday 29th May Dinosaur Trail Turn up at the Forest Café any time between 10.30am and 2.30pm to follow the trail through the forest and learn about the “terrible lizards”! £3 per child.
