A favourite footpath: Bark Hill into town
The best way is through the Racks - perhaps an ancient way. Turn off the main route to a beat-up bit of road, with parking at the front or behind very serious gates. Walking down, you can see into backgardens. Here are intriguing remnants of how a house was once approached; steps now overgrown, become part of the bank, hardly visible. There are trees covered in blossom, later dropping apples - a shocking waste! The track narrows, becomes a path where sometimes you have to fight your way past brambles snaking out of the hedge.
May and June, the garlic scent of the ramsons is pervasive, and in summer and autumn, there are plants whose names I forget every year. Further on you look down into gardens on Cleobury Road. A lot of the taller trees were recently cleared, so the view down into Bewdley, its roofs, church tower, even a bit of the railway, is even lovelier.
Towards the end, there are remains of wide steps; wonderful roses and other climbing - or flopping - plants often hang over the garden wall to your left. That’s just before the house at the other side. which boasts a statue of a pig and a wonderful gushing water feature. Then you come down to a row of little houses, which have marvellous displays in their window boxes and by the front doors to make up for what must be really precipitous at the back. And there you are in Welch Gate... The Bridge is the community voice of Bewdley
It is free and delivered by volunteers to more than 4,600 homes every month Visit us at www.bewdleybridge.org.uk
This month the Bridge takes us outdoors. Jane Moreton shares her pleasure in a walk down an ancient Bewdley path, captured beautifully in Gary’s photographs. Wendy Carter of Worcestershire Wildlife Trust tells us more about the splendid Blackstone poppy fields before the area reverts to heathland and Linda Iles delights in bees and bats at Uncllys Farm. Music in Jubilee Gardens starts the Carnival weekend. We descover how the Secret Gardener is getting ready for the Horticultural Society Show in August, while two intrepid members of the Bridge team discover that training for the pub and club regatta has its special challenges. Follow the Last Again crew’s progress on Pub and Club Regatta day on 1st June. Do you have a favourite tree in Bewdley? The Bridge met Gren Jones and Cliff Willmot recently to hear what they love about the town’s treescape and to find out more about their roles as Tree Wardens. Meanwhile, Bridge readers are invited to make a special contribution to the future of the town. St. George’s Hall is close to being transformed from the rather tired building it was to a community hall we can all enjoy. It now needs equipping. See page 23 to discover why your donations are needed to finish the project. The Friends of Bewdley Museum need your help in preparing for an exhibition to mark next year’s centenary of the start of the First World War. They want to capture local memories and stories to form an archive for future generations. See page 31 for details of how you can take part. I hope you enjoy Bewdley’s outdoors this June, wherever you are. Gill

Pleased to meet you: Gren Jones and Cliff Willmot, Tree Wardens
For nearly 20 years, Gren and Cliff have been champions of Bewdley’s trees. With the belief that trees matter in any community, they work as volunteer wardens under a scheme run by the Tree Council, the UK’s lead charity for trees. Gren has a lifetime of arboreal enthusiasm rooted in his childhood in rural Wales; Cliff is motivated by the opportunity to make a difference and protect what we have. “Bewdley is a town in an orchard”, he says. “The orchards may have gone, but many of the trees remain. They are important.”
Both men talk of trees being a social amenity; how trees that are visible from public places have an impact on our lives and make Bewdley a better place.
What do tree wardens do? One role is to raise awareness, perhaps through work with local schools or events such as photographic exhibitions of local trees, and another is to encourage planting. Examples include the fruit trees - acquired through a County Council initiative - at the Black Boy Hotel and in Wribbenhall churchyard, as well as the riverbank display near the schools of over a hundred alders and poplars - planted with local children to mark the Millennium.
An essential part of the job is to prevent unnecessary loss to the town’s treescape. As the eyes and ears of the community, Tree Wardens’ views are sought for planning applications and decisions. Is the tree visible to the public? Is it of value to the landscape? The solution to difficult decisions can usually be found in compromise: if a tree needs to be cut down, plant a replacement nearby. And the best way to prevent problems in the conservation area? The swift removal of self-seeded sycamores and ash trees as seedlings or young trees. “Whip it out before it becomes a problem tree in the wrong place!”
Favourite trees? Gren’s favourites are the mighty oak tree near Winterdyne and, of course, Bewdley’s famous Sweet Chestnut in the grounds of Kateshill. This 400 year old tree was selected as one of Britain’s 50 great trees for a book presented to the Queen to celebrate her Golden Jubilee in 2002. A replacement tree has subsequently been planted by the owners of the property to ensure continuity with this part of the town's history.
Cliff says that Bewdley’s rich treescape, typical of small country towns, is more important to him than any individual tree. He particularly admires the natural growth of birch trees that has been encouraged along the bypass near the Wribbenhall roundabout, but does admit to a soft spot for the splendid copper beech by the library. What next? Gren and Cliff would love to have a survey completed of Bewdley’s trees. If you are interested, they would be pleased to hear from you via the Town Clerk: townclerk@bewdley.org.uk 11

Books are good for you – it’s official!
As a child, if I was feeling a little down, one thing that would always cheer me up was reading a favourite book. A passage from 'The Secret Garden' describing Mary Lennox's blossoming relationship with the (to her) alien Yorkshire countryside would leave me feeling more kindly disposed towards the world. For a while…
Recent research into the psychological benefits of reading has reinforced what some of us already know; books can make you feel better! The 'Books on Prescription' scheme has been running in Worcestershire for some time now, and is about to be launched nationwide. The aim is to encourage self help for mild to moderate psychological conditions such as depression and anxiety. Your GP can issue you with a prescription for a book related to your particular circumstances, which you can take out of the library without charge. All you need is current library membership.
In addition, we have now caught up with most libraries and had a coffee machine installed, so that you can enjoy a hot drink whilst browsing through your book/newspaper/magazine. A word of warning; drinks are £1, but the machine doesn't take £1 coins. Kay Sanderson Bewdley Library

Meeting Bewdley’s young entrepreneurs:
Georgie Simmonds, 24, bought an established beauty business from her employer when she was 22. This year she moved into new premises in Load Street.
How have you ended up running your own business? After Bewdley High, and a NVQ level 3 in Beauty Therapy, I was lucky enough to get a job straightaway with a family run beauty salon. I loved it and learned a lot and knew it was the job for me. When the salon owner decided to retire, I took the plunge and bought the business.
It was very scary taking such a financial risk, especially in a recession, but I was confident I was doing the right thing and didn’t want to regret missing the chance. A key factor in the decision was looking at the finances and being realistic about outgoings and income. My accountant went through with me what was involved in owning a business and helped me decide whether it was viable.
Challenges? I was suddenly faced with lots of forms and paperwork to deal with, all of which were new. I quickly learned about registering for business rates and comparing electricity suppliers as well as dealing with companies that supply the products we use in the salon. I found this daunting at first, but people were very helpful when I asked for advice and support. I couldn’t have done it without my family and friends.
Best bits? The business doing well enough for me to move into a new salon in the town centre has been exciting. I’ve loved putting my own stamp on it and even decorating late into the evening after a day at work was fun. Harriet works with me as a beauty therapist and, as well as looking after existing clients, we continue to welcome new ones. It’s really enjoyable planning how the business can expand.
What I like most is being able to make key decisions and to feel that success or failure rests with me. It’s made me really passionate about my work and I grew up very quickly!
Advice to young people thinking of running a business? Get as much information as you can from local councils and small business help schemes and accept any help you are given by friends and family. Once you have done your research and looked into everything, if all seems well, just go for it.
Make sure you are constantly on top of your accounts and books. I do mine weekly without fail so I know exactly where I stand and can make sure everything is as it should be.
What next? Bewdley Beauty Clinic has now been going for 19 years and we look forward to many more years to come! 15

I love summertime musical events in Jubilee Gardens and am looking forward to hearing the Grumpy Old Guitarists the night before the Carnival. There's always such a relaxed and sociable atmosphere, especially if the weather obliges. What better way to wind down after a week at work than relaxing with a glass of wine and some jazz or folk music.
The Stacey Kent CD I am listening to right now reminds me of a Bewdley Festival concert I went to a few years ago, where Stacey performed from her relaxed and cosmopolitan Jazz repertoire with her band in the Ramada. As a part time pianist, I was awestruck by the effortless playing of the pianist. Being classically trained, I always rely on the music (or "the dots" as we often call them) to play. I would give my right arm to be able to strum a guitar from memory like the Grumpys will do in June or improvise on a Jazz standard like Stacey's pianist could. Aside from making you very popular at parties, it must be great to just play whenever or wherever you are and to sing or play with freedom. I know that jazz or folk music isn't to everyone's taste, but for many, there is no better way to shake off the stresses and strains of the world. It never fails to bring a smile to my face.
So if you've never tried it before, give it a go this summer, be it in Jubilee gardens, or the Upton Blues festival or any other of the great outdoor events we are lucky to have access to over the coming months. If you can add some sunshine and a good bottle or two then you can't go wrong. Alastair Elliott

A Spitfire is coming....
August 10th Button Oak
Discover Bewdley Spring Fair
The sun shone as temperatures soared and shorts and T-shirts were de rigueur! Bewdley was very busy for the Spring Fair with more than 7000 people visiting the town and Bewdley Museum over the two days! The riverside was heaving, as was the craft and food market on Severn Side South, as people enjoyed the warm weather. The Severn Area Rescue Association exhibited one of their inflatable lifeboats.
Many brought picnics to Jubilee Gardens to enjoy music from Whalebone and The Hut People, and the Third Bewdley Salad Challenge provided a moment of theatre, as five local chefs battled to create the best salad from mostly local ingredients. The winner was Mark Flello from Victorian cafÊ Grannystap with his smoked pigeon and beetroot twoways salad. He also used foraged wood sorrel and wood violets – see Mark with the Bewdley Salad Challenge trophy presented by the Mayor of Bewdley, Councillor John Latham.
The Mug House beer festival sold out their beer; many visited the Bewdley Brewery in Lax Lane and the exhibition of the Arley Ferry in Dog Lane. The Local guided walks led by Bewdley Civic Society, Bewdley Footpaths and Bridleways Association, and Worcestershire Countryside Services were popular and the Friends of Bewdley Museum organised Bewdley Churches History Trail was well attended. St. George’s Hall nears completion Your help is needed to make it happen
Over £800,000 is being spent turning St. George’s Hall into a space for the whole community to use when it opens in August 2013. The project is supported by the Rural Development Programme for England, for which Defra is the Managing Authority, part financed by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development: Europe, investing in rural areas. It’s exciting that this funding has come to Bewdley.
Visitors to St. George’s Hall in recent years will recall a rather tired building with poor access, inadequate heating and a roof in need of repair. Because of the rules attached to the Defra grant, all of the money so far is being spent on structural work: making the building sound, warm and well-lit with new toilets and disabled access and providing spaces and meeting rooms for a whole range of community activities and private bookings.
Money is now needed for fixtures, fittings and equipment and so an appeal to raise £150,000 was recently launched. Good quality seating, tables, stage lighting, a sound system and projection equipment will allow the venue to be used for activities such as viewing the latest films or streamed-in live sport and enjoying drama, dance and literary performances, as well as accommodating such traditional events as beer festivals and horticultural shows.
SGH Venue Management, set up to run the hall, is working hard to find funds from a variety of sources and is delighted that donations have been already received from organisations and individuals eager for the hall to be ready as soon as possible. They are now turning to the people of the town to help make what will be a fine building become a fully equipped community centre we are all proud to use. • •

From The Secret Gardener
May Day was just lovely! Rising sap and rising temperatures. A day spent in the garden,
The plot is greening up nicely….shallots and onion sets are showing well, early potatoes are through and carrots are germinating in the open ground. Why do I find it so hard to get carrot seed to germinate?
The greenhouse is heaving with plants just waiting to go into their bed, but it is important to count backwards from the 10th August when the Bewdley Horticultural Society Show takes place. I want the best specimens to be at their peak for the show…always important not to peak too early!
Show onions are still in their modules, dahlia cuttings are rooting well, tomato plants are stocky and the tender cucurbits are just waiting for a bit more heat. I love the cucumbers, courgettes, squashes and pumpkins. How many go to make up an exhibit? Must get hold of the show schedule. Like Dame Edna, my favourite flower is the gladiolus. How I wish I could show two vases of three spikes. So, I’ll count the days to the show and plant the corms in succession and hope that the weather is kind and the thrips go somewhere else.
I love a full day in the garden. Have fun in yours and get your show schedule too.
Bewdley Carnival Saturday 8th June The Carnival is nearly here!
The main attraction at this year’s event will be the K9 Freestyle Dog Dancing Display with their top trainer Richard Curtis. Richard has successfully competed in canine freestyle and dog dancing and obedience, three times winning the freestyle final at Crufts. We are delighted he has agreed to come to Bewdley.
Other attractions on the day include the West Midlands Tae Kwon Do (Bewdley Club), the Bewdley Concert Band, magician and juggler Wilmoris and Son, and local girl Megan Ince with an Irish Dancing display.
The parade leaves Hales Park at 1pm and is led by Carnival Princesses: Leah Gittins, 7, and Abigail Thomas,6, from St Anne’s Primary School and Megan Edmonds, 7, and Alice Chedham,9, from Wribbenhall Primary School. The girls travel on the Carnival Float at the front of the parade down Cleobury Road and into Bewdley town centre. From there they continue over the bridge, along Stourport Road and onto the Carnival field at Bewdley Leisure centre. Please phone Sue on 01299 401841 for any information about the carnival including how to join the parade, either as a walking group or with a float, or if you wish to run a stall on the field. 31

Bewdley Museum
After a busy start to the season, with visitor numbers swelled by Easter activities and the Bewdley Spring Fayre, the Museum has also played host to schools and groups from around the Midlands. Residents may have seen ‘Evacuees’ heading off to Bewdley Station with their address labels, gas masks and ID cards. Increasingly popular are Local History studies and the River Severn topic, so staff are making ropes and model coracles by the dozen.
Many visitors have enjoyed the recent History Walks and fortunately, the blossom at Uncllys Farm was just beginning to show for the Orchard Trail, despite the adverse weather conditions. It is anticipated that the Trail will be repeated in July for the Museum’s Cherry Festival. Temporary exhibitions throughout June include ‘Bewdley Open Studios’ and ‘Portraits inspired by the Folklore, Myths and Legends of Worcestershire’.
Since last month’s appeal for volunteers, several enthusiastic people who came forward have already started to assist with such activities as Ropemaking, Claypipes and Brassrubbing. For details of the above and opening times please refer to our website www.wyreforestdc.gov.uk/museum or phone 0845 603 5699.

A challenge for 2014 - planning for an historic exhibition
2014 will mark 100 years since the outbreak of the First World War and The Friends of Bewdley Museum would like your help to explore the way in which the conflict changed everyday lives for the people of Wyre Forest. We want to seek out family memories and stories passed down through generations, before they disappear for good.
We would like to hear about the fathers and sons who went to war from Bewdley and the surrounding areas – can we discover stories of valour, of sadness, of heroism and of love? In addition we want to come to terms with the other side of the Great War – how did it impact on those left behind? Can we pull together local tales of changes to family life? Did Bewdley people have to work on the land, in the forest or down the mines? What part did our transport systems play in the battles? We need volunteers with stories; we need volunteers who will help us research the past and to monitor the many websites, podcasts and social media stories which will be popular through the next 12 – 20 months to access local information and seek out images. The research will form the basis of an exhibition to be staged during 2014 to mark the centenary. If you would like to help, why not come to our AGM and chat to us about how we can all help each other to commemorate and celebrate the roles played by the people of Wyre Forest in the First World War. Alternatively you can telephone the museum on 0845 6035699 and arrange to come and meet us. Penny Griffiths Chair The Friends of Bewdley Museum

Pub and Club – the training
Session 1: Three men went to row. We’re a man down but hit the rowing machines with coach Peter. It’s all about timing and fast hands: move them forward before you move your legs. Much harder than it looks and kills my lower back.
After the ergs it's outside to the ‘tub’ where we get to grips for the first time with oars. What we have learned deserts us, but Peter is there to offer advice. This time it's about hand heights and not falling off the tiny seats.
Session 2: On the water at last A full crew, we’re on the river getting into a boat with a mind of its own. Cling onto the blades; keep the ends on the water. It’s called the safety position and we know why. So what happens when we want to move the boat?
Two of us have a go at a stroke while the others try to keep the boat level. We tip one way then An ‘Erg’ - rowing machine the other. “Watch your hands”, “Keep it level”. Peter gets us to row as a four and only the river gods can keep us level now. This is not good: our timing is out, Nick cannot get his blade out of the water…. but we eventually manage a few strokes.
Session 3: Catching air and crabs Now seasoned professionals, it's straight into the boat. All goes well for the first 200 metres then I keep catching air as I try to pull a stroke and Nick catches a big crab – his blade is stuck in the water and the oar tries to throw him out of the boat.
Peter urges us to keep the boat level: “Try skimming the blades across the water as you come up to the catch”, “Keep the blades square”, “Close your eyes and feel the boat under you”, “Keep your hands low in the boat”. Some of it filters through. I keep one eye on Keith's back so we move at the same time, and the other on James’ rigger so I can square my blade when he squares his. We’re getting the hang of this!
Session 4: A false start All is well until we try a racing start; sitting forward, blades in the water ready to take 5 fast strokes. I can’t keep up and the boat is all over the place. Next go, I take smaller strokes and it works; Peter is pleased.
We are challenged to a race by another Pub and Club crew. The adrenaline flows and all training and timing go out the window. Our start is terrible and we hit a tree. The other crew is off and away. We stop and take stock…

If The Shoe Fits…
Community News
Over the summer, Bewdley museum gallery will be hosting a unique exhibition entitled “If The Shoe Fits...”
People with a connection to the town have lent a pair of shoes that have a special significance. All sorts of footwear are included – from wellies to spectacular high heels; from sneakers to sandals to a pair of wooden shoes from the 18th century. They belong to people including an Olympic Sailor, Gardener, Soldier, Polar Explorer, Climate-change Protester, Mime Artist, a Judge, a pair belonging to Stanley Baldwin who was Prime Minister in the 1930s, and a bishop. These and many other shoes all belong to people who have fascinating, moving and often extraordinary stories to tell.
The exhibition is being sponsored by St Anne’s Church, Bewdley, whose Rector, Keith James said, “If anyone from the Bewdley area can add a pair of shoes that have a special significance and a story attached to them, then do get in contact.” Revd James can be contacted through rector@bewdleyparish.org.uk.
The exhibition is free and runs from 22nd July to 22nd September, 10am-4.30pm. Bewdley Museum, in the centre of Bewdley - Load Street. Telephone: 0845 603 5699 Email: bewdley.museum@wyreforestdc.gov.uk Bewdley Museum, Load Street, Bewdley, DY12 2AE

TOWN COUNCIL NEWS
TOWN COUNCIL MEETING HELD ON 7th MAY 2013
Stourport Road Parking Problems Councillors heard again about problems being encountered in Stourport Road at school times with congestion along the entire road and with examples being quoted of cars parking across driveways and even in driveways and on grass verges. Correspondence had taken place between some local residents and the head teachers of the High School, Primary School and Riverside Children’s Centre, but the replies then received from officials at County Hall were not optimistic about dropping off or parking facilities being provided on the school sites themselves. It was agreed this should be pursued further. Dog Fouling The Council had a discussion about the perennial problem of dog mess on pavements and footpaths around the town having received many complaints from local residents and shopkeepers. Examples were quoted of dogs “doing their business” on front lawns, in alleyways as well as pavements in the town centre. Councillors agreed everyone should be more pro-active in reporting instances ie time/date/place and description of dog/owner to the District Council, which has responsibility for enforcing dog fouling laws. This can be done on-line or via the Hub on 01562 732928.
Community Emergency Plan Councillors were given an up-date on arrangements relating to the Community Emergency Plan. The Plan may be triggered by the Emergency Services when a serious incident takes place and which may involve the evacuation of buildings within an area or some other larger scale event which poses a threat to public safety. A key part of the Plan is to have a Community Response Team consisting of local people who can be called upon at short notice to provide local knowledge and generally take on an assisting role. It was agreed that rather than to have a small number of individuals involved it would be better to encourage a much wider spectrum of the community to take part operating under a cascade system. Anyone interested in being public spirited in this way should contact the Town Clerk’s Office at the Guildhall. Future Town Council meetings Town Council meetings are held at The Guildhall at 7.30pm on the first Monday of each month unless stated otherwise. The next meetings are: 3rd June, 1st July, 5th August and 2nd September. The Mayor’s Civic Service will take place on Sunday 9th June at St Anne’s Church at 11.00am. Agendas and Minutes of Town Council and Planning Committee Meetings are posted on the Notice Boards outside the Mayor’s Parlour, in the Guildhall Entrance and by the Library Entrance and on the Town Council’s page of www.bewdley.org.uk Minutes are also available at the Library and at the Town Clerk’s Office. Calling all 8-11 year olds - your chance to go.... Wild in Wyre!
Last summer we had an overwhelming response to our article in The Bridge, and 25 children spent three days of fun and adventure, deep in the wilds of Wyre Forest playing in their own secret location! They had a great time building natural shelters, making bows and arrows, learning how to light a fire and getting messy making their own mud monsters! This March the Forestry Commission launched its new National Learning Strategy. Our vision is, ‘To enable everyone, everywhere, to connect with the nation’s trees and forests so that they understand their importance...and act positively to safeguard forests for the future.’ We hope that running events such as ‘Wild in Wyre’ will give children the opportunity to connect with the natural environment in a fun and stimulating way, and inspire them to really value and care for their local trees and forests.
So if you don’t want to miss your chance in Summer’13 to toast dampers over a camp fire, play games such as ‘Camouflage Capture’ and make your own string bracelet from the bark of a tree, then book onto the Forestry Commission’s ‘Wild in Wyre’ three day holiday activity for 8-11 year olds. The event is running from Monday 29th until Wednesday 31st July (9am to 3pm) and costs £70 for the three days. Places are limited so book early to avoid disappointment! Tel: 01299 266929 or e-mail learning.west@forestry.gsi.gov.uk
If you are aged between 11-14 years then you may like to know that one of our partners “Step-Out” is running a Living Wild Week from 29th July to 2nd August at nearby Ribbesford Wood. For more details see www.step-out.eu Hope to see you there! Amanda Dixon Learning Ranger Forestry Commission

A Sea of Red
Community News
Blackstone Farm Fields will again be turning Bewdley red, as the sea of poppies on this Worcestershire Wildlife Trust nature reserve comes into flower. In 2007 Blackstone Farm Fields were bought with a long-term plan of reverting them to heathland – Worcestershire’s most threatened habitat. The fields lie next to The Devil’s Spittleful and Rifle Range nature reserves, so this is a great opportunity to help wildlife expand their range and numbers. Heathland plants thrive in relatively poor quality sandy soils so we’re minimising the use of fertilisers at Blackstone Farm and are planting the fields on rotation with crops that help to reduce the nutrients in the soil.
The poppy display is entirely natural and is indicative of sympathetic management – skylarks nest amongst them and the wide flower-rich field margins are fabulous for bees, butterflies and other insects. Just turning the soil (and seeds) and leaving different fields fallow should result in the poppies springing up. We’re waiting to see how the delayed spring will affect this year’s display. The eventual return to heathland will mean the loss of fields full of poppies. However, healthy heathland includes disturbed patches of ground and we’re hoping that pockets of poppies will return time and again. Along with the management work we’ve been doing on the Devil’s Spittleful itself, this extended heathland will eventually help attract nightjars, woodlarks and other heathland specialities back to the area. The poppies will be displaying in the field alongside the A456 this year; we’re creating a viewing area for the many visitors that drop in to see the spectacle. Harvested poppy seeds will be available for a small donation, so that visitors can recreate the effect in their gardens. If you visit please don’t go beyond the roped areas – it’s really important not to disturb the nesting skylarks or ruin the views for other visitors. To find out more about our work and how you can support us visit : www.worcswildlifetrust.co.uk. Wendy Carter, Worcestershire Wildlife Trust
June in the forest
On our warmer days I’ve been watching the bees. Having vowed to buy only garden plants that are beneficial to wildlife this year, it’s been good to see my Aubretias and wallflowers alive with all kinds of insects seeking their nectar, but the real action on sunny days seems to be going on in the house walls! Mason bees have been busy installing their offspring in tunnels in the crumbly mortar, laying single eggs in cells with their own pollen/nectar food supply. Mason bees, leaf-cutter bees, mining bees, honey bees, cuckoo bees, carder bees, bumble bees and bees with no common name (only Latin, poor things): there are over one hundred species around us. I would love to meet Osmia bicolour, a relative of the mason bee, who builds her nest in an old snail shell! I’m sure I’ll be told that we don’t get them round here.
mothers will be giving birth in maternity roosts. Dusk is a good time to watch for their feeding flights along woodland edges and clearings. A couple of years ago when we were keeping pigs in the woods it became evident that the bats were taking advantage of the situation. It worked like this: pigs eat the brambles; pigs leave poo; dung beetles eat the poo; bats fly over the pig-grazed areas hunting the dung beetles. Oh yes, and we eat the pigs. This year various groups of visitors to Uncllys Farm have helped to make bat boxes, which will be wired up in oak trees on the edges of the fields. They will provide safe havens for the bats and allow numbers to be monitored.
Here are some events this month: 9 June Open Farm Sunday - free walks at Uncllys Farm, from 10.30am to 12.30pm and 2pm to 4pm. Please book on 01299 488083.
17 June Have fun Tie Dyeing at Uncllys Farm. A taster session for adults from 10am to 12noon. £6 each - ring 01299 488083 to book.
28 June Dusk Walk at Wyre Forest Discovery Centre, Callow Hill, 9pm Our other house guests include bats: 11pm, £6 per person. - please bring a particularly pipistrelles and soprano torch.
