Out and About

Our photographer Gary Mayner has been busy this month, visiting the Cricket Club’s 6-a-side competition, the Georgian tea party in Jubilee Gardens and the 40’s weekend on the Severn Valley Railway.

The Bridge is the community voice of Bewdley

It is free and delivered by volunteers to more than 4,600 homes every month Visit us at www.bewdleybridge.org.uk

Welcome to The Bridge in a month that marks an exciting development for Bewdley. The scaffolding has come down, the painters have left and a gleaming St. George’s Hall is ready to play its part once more in the life of the town. See page 15 for details of the hall’s first event, the Horticultural Society’s annual show on the 10th August.

Gardens feature prominently in this month’s magazine:Wendy Oldfield Austen enthuses about the Bewdley in Bloom entries on page 43 and our Secret Gardener delights in roses and raspberries on page 25. Jubilee Gardens again provide the venue for a series of Sunday afternoon concerts; see page 15 for what is on offer. And a message from Margaret: please help yourself to the produce in St.Anne’s Church vegetable garden. Bewdley Festival is also celebrated this month. Our centrefold brings you the 2013 programme. Alastair Elliott, Bridge music correspondent, will be first in the queue when tickets go on general sale on the 3rd August. He explains why on page13.

Jenny Paddock has been Festival Director for the last 16 years and has a commitment as strong as ever to bringing the arts to Bewdley. The Bridge met her recently to find out what keeps her going and to hear her vision for the cultural life of our town. Read the interview on page 9.

And find out how one Bewdley family has been paying tribute to their father, a man who contributed much to the town. Read about the Millingtons’ epic bike ride on page 39. I hope you are able to enjoy Bewdley’s gardens this August. Gill

Pleased to meet you: Jenny Paddock, Bewdley Festival Director

Community News

This October sees Jenny Paddock’s 16th festival as Director and she still enjoys bringing performers to Bewdley. A self-confessed live performance junkie, credited with bringing “the common touch”, she leads a strong team to present programmes year after year with a broad appeal.

She is proud of the calibre of acts the festival attracts. Bill Bryson, Lord Robert Winston, Barbara Dixon were all prepared to come because of Bewdley Festival’s reputation among booking agents. “Artists love appearing in our venues,” says Jenny. “They know they will be warmly welcomed and appreciated. There is something special about Bewdley audiences.” She loves the buzz in town around festival time and is delighted with the trade the event brings to local shops and restaurants.

Jenny has been part of too many stunning festival evenings to have a favourite but one night does stand out as being special. Cleo Laine cancelled because of ill health and Jenny had to explain to a disappointed audience why the show they had turned up to see was not going to happen. Anxiety at the reception awaiting her became delight with the kindness she met.

Two early aims have been achieved. The festival has an office base from which to operate and continues to be financially stable so that each year’s programme can be booked with confidence. “We are a festival that punches above its weight, never having been in receipt of any significant Arts Council funding. All financial support is from local people and businesses.”

Jenny’s ultimate aim has always been to establish a venue for the arts in the town and - while it doesn’t provide the 350 seater auditorium she still dreams of – she has spent the last year heavily involved in the refurbishment of St.George’s Hall. The collaboration between Bewdley Festival, Bewdley Development Trust and the hall’s trustees has borne fruit, attracting substantial funding from DEFRA. “It’s been quite a journey to get this far but, now the hall is operational, it’s a really exciting time.” Jenny is looking forward to all the events SGH can bring to the heart of Bewdley throughout the year and is always open to new ideas. “If you are a performer who wants a platform, get in touch.”

And the future? “The festival is at an interesting stage because of its success and may have reached its potential in the current venues. We have to think of different ways to grow, perhaps with more satellite festivals. Bewdley Book Week and Bewdley Youth Festival are already established. We could have a folk and a jazz festival at different times of the year. New blood is the way forward!” Jenny would love to hear from anyone who shares this vision for The Festivals of Bewdley and would like to become involved. Meanwhile we can all look forward to what is on offer this autumn. admin@bewdleyfestival.org.uk 01299 404808

Last month some important words were omitted from the Bewdley Methodist Church advertisement on page 27. It was not the baptism of Alice and Ed Westbury that was celebrated on the church’s anniversary but rather that of their daughter Florence. Our apologies to all concerned.

Behind the Baton

Community News

This month sees the eagerly awaited release of the Bewdley Festival Programme and, once again, I am hugely impressed at the quality of International Stars the Festival Committee has attracted. I love that the programme shies away from traditional favourites and offers something different. Over the next couple of months, I'll delve a bit deeper into some of the concerts, but here is my overview of the great range of music on offer this year.

The Festival kicks off with some powerful Rhythm and Blues from Andy Fairweather Low and his band. Andy has played with some of the true greats, Clapton, Wyman, Satriani and the Mercure ballroom will be buzzing by the end of the evening.

On the following Sunday, the focus turns to St Anne's with Will Todd's Mass in Blue during the morning service. I love it when Jazz and Church music collide. Jazz music comes from the heart and when it's celebrated in a religious context, the results are truly uplifting. In the afternoon, another of the CBSO's talented groups visit the festival in the form of El Ultimo Tango - created and led by the CBSO's instantly recognisable Principle 'Cellist: Eduardo Vassello. The group concentrates on music from Eduardo's native Argentina. Made up of 'Cello, Bass, Flute, Sax and Piano, they have a wonderfully mellifluous tone coupled with a real freshness and vitality. It should be a most enjoyable but relaxing afternoon in the calm sanctuary of St Anne’s.

Fans of Ella Fitzgerald should take note of the concert on Monday 14th October when Claire Teal comes to town. Claire started life as an amateur singer but is now recognised as one of Britain’s finest female Jazz Singers. She has a super no-nonsense style and again I'm sure there'll be a great atmosphere in the Mercure.

There’ll be a little calm on Wednesday 16th with Edwina Hayes and her beautiful, pure folk voice. Edwina is probably most famous for her performance of Randy Newman's "Feels Like Home" featured on the wonderful film "My Sister's Keeper". If you've seen the film, and were wondering which song it was, I suspect it would have been when you had tears pouring down your cheeks!

Finally, on Friday 18th October, English Folk Legends come to town in the form of Martin Carthy and Dave Swarbrick. Martin and Dave have been performing Folk and Electric Folk since the 60's and are Masters of their art. Again they have played with some of the greats of English Folk: Fairport Convention and Steeleye Span for example. I believe these days, their sets are more intimate and accoustic affairs but that will merely allow you to enjoy their skills even more.

If I was being slightly critical and betraying my personal tastes a little, I would have liked to have seen one conventional classical recital in the programme, but I applaud the Festival Committee for once again bringing some amazing artists to our town and I urge you all to support your Festival. Alastair Elliott

Bewdley Book Week

Community News

9-14 September

Bewdley's festival season gets under way early this year with Bewdley Book Week starting on 9th September and it brings a host of local and nationally recognised writers to the town. The launch lunch at the Mercure Kidderminster Hotel on the opening day features an appearance by Angela Douglas, the actress at the centre of scandal when she fell in love with the actor Kenneth More – 'a very married man'. She'll talk about her autobiography Swings and Roundabouts that describes her career in theatre, television and films, the emotional rollercoaster of her life with Kenneth More, her all-consuming grief at his death, and her life and work since. This year's Book Week is strong on showbiz. There's Sheila Steafel whose long career in television (The Frost Report, Not Only But Also, Dr Who) and her marriage to Harry H Corbett provide the material for her autobiography, and Paul Rees, former editor of Q and Kerrang!, who has written the authorised biography of music legend Robert Plant. In a similar vein, Deke Leonard will discuss his book about 'guitarists that rocked the world'. There are eleven other events catering for all reading tastes. Genres represented include: Black Country romantic family saga, psychological horror, the paranormal, poetry and historical fact and fiction. Look out for other literary-themed events around the town. The week closes with a Literary Quiz Supper at The Hop Pole.

Full details of the speakers and their talks can be found at: www.bewdleybookweek.org.uk. Tickets are on sale now at the Information Centre (Launch Lunch only from the Bewdley Festival Office in Old Snuff Mill Warehouse 01299 404808).

Court Shoes

The 9th May 2001 was the day I took the Queen's shilling, and was sworn in as a Circuit Judge. This formal ceremony was conducted by the Lord Chancellor in his rooms at the House of Lords and took place in the presence of my family. I was required to wear full ceremonial dress. In addition to the Circuit Judge’s robes and full bottomed wig (which is never worn in court), I was required to wear breeches, tights and buckle shoes. These are the shoes, which have only been worn on that one occasion and are unlikely to be worn again, unless I decide to attend the annual Lord Chancellor’s Breakfast, another formal ceremony, to mark the start of the legal year. The events of that day certainly changed my life; it involved a fundamental change of role. No longer would I be the advocate, striving (within the bounds of professional ethics) to obtain the best outcome for my client, but I was now the judge, seeking out the truth and attempting, in the words of the judicial oath, "to do right to all manner of people after the laws and usages of this Realm without fear or favour, affection or ill will"; in other words, to do justice. That has been my role for the past 12 years and I am immensely privileged to undertake that task which is one which gives me great personal satisfaction. It all began, however, with the shoes. Richard Rundell

One of the stories from the ‘If the shoe fits…’ exhibition at Bewdley Museum until 22nd September

Thoughts from the Secret Gardener

Aren’t the roses good this year? It may be the result of good pruning, judicious feeding or is it just Mother Nature rewarding our patience after last year’s awful summer? She was also kind to the peonies as well. Don’t you always find that the opening of those great big, showy flowers is closely followed by heavy rain and high winds? Not this year!

Hot, dry weather is lovely for holidaymakers but it can be a problem for us gardeners, especially those who have the light sandy Wribbenhall soils. Best not to worry about the grass: it will come good again when it rains. I go easy on the mowing, raising the cut to just trim of the straggly ends. It can cause runner beans to struggle too. Give them lots of water at the roots and hope that the flowers turn into beans. They don’t like warm nights when there is barely any temperature difference from the day.

The soft fruit is loving the warmth and the dry weather has sent the slugs away so that those delicious strawberries are ripe, warm and uneaten before we get to them. Raspberries are ripening and I’ve even managed to beat the birds to some of the cherries!

We are closing in on Bewdley Horticultural Society Show. I hope that things will be ready in time for the 10th August, both the crops and our new St George’s Hall!

Live Wyres Social Singles Group

Live Wyres is a Wyre Forest based social club for single people, first set up 18 years ago. We meet in pubs in Wyre Forest and surrounding areas and hold dances and other events in a range of venues from hotels to village halls. Live Wyres is not a dating agency. It is about meeting people and socialising with them in a friendly, no-pressure, non-judgemental environment. We have over a 100 members ranging in age from early 50s to early 80s. The club is run by a committee, elected at the AGM every year but members are encouraged to organise events. A very varied timetable has been established throughout the year to suit members with a wide range of interests. This year our events have included dances, theatre visits - locally and London, trips to Gardens, to London, to Port Sunlight, to BBC Studios, to the Pantomime, trip on the SVR Fish and Chip Special, Long Weekend to Eastleigh in Devon, Turkey and Tinsel, pub lunches, evening meals, walks, scrabble nights, Skittles Nights to name just a few. We are always open to new suggestions. The most important thing is that we have fun and enjoy ourselves. We always welcome new members. A warm welcome for you at Bewdley Methodist Church

Join us for worship every Sunday morning at 10.30 in our lovely old church on High Street, next to the Jubilee Gardens entrance. Our services last about an hour and, once a month, children and grandchildren enjoy their own lively Sunday Club. See www.bewdleymethodists.org.uk

Goodbye Linda, Hello Phil

This month we say farewell to our minister of the last two years, Revd Linda Catlow, who is moving to Runcorn in Cheshire to become the superintendent minister of the Methodist

Circuit there. We shall miss Linda – and her husband, Barry, a local preacher – but we look forward to welcoming Revd

Philip Hoare as our new minister from 1st September.

Phil is moving to our Kidderminster & Stourport Circuit from Bloxwich. The minister’s phone number is 826641.

Did you know? Methodists elect a new national leader every year at our annual Conference. Our President for 2013/14 is Revd Ruth Gee from the Darlington District and the Vice President is Dr Daleep Mukarji, a former director of Christian Aid.

Friends of Bewdley Museum

First World War Centenary Exhibition 2014

We have had an encouraging response to last month’s article and are delighted that Bridge readers are spreading the word about our research. A member of Bewdley Town Football Club, who played when it was called the “Bewdley Comrades” in the 60s and 70s, has now confirmed the name is from the First World War. We have also heard from Simon in Gloucestershire, sent the article by his mother. He used to walk by St Anne’s War Memorial on his way to school in Bewdley and developed a great interest in World War 1. “I’m very keen to help with your project. All through my research I’ve been wondering what to do with it.”

Our first meeting is in the Mayor’s Parlour, under the Guildhall at the entrance of Bewdley Museum, on Monday 5th August from 5 – 6pm. Thanks to Mayor Cllr. Linda Candlin. I will be joined by Liz Cowley, Collections & Interpretation Officer, Bewdley Museum.

If you want to find out more, if you have a little or a lot of time, an interest in the subject or want to explore doing something new, please think about joining us. Just turn up, email me at pennygriffths@tiscali.co.uk or phone Liz on 0845 6035699. We look forward to seeing you.

St George’s Hall Up and Running

Building work on St George’s Hall was successfully completed in July. The renovated community hub will open its doors to the public for its first event on Saturday 10th August when it hosts the annual Bewdley Horticultural Society show. SGH Venue Management, the new company set up to operate the hall, is now turning its attention to operational matters including fitting out the building and staffing with both paid employees and volunteers. The Parochial Parish Council of St Anne’s Church Bewdley, St Leonard’s Church Ribbesford and St Andrew’s Church in Button Oak has stepped in to provide the new company with a cash flow loan of up to £10,000 to help with expenditure in the first few months of operation. Generous donations and grants have continued in response to the appeal for funding to fit out the building launched on St George’s Day. The appeal is still open and donations can be made through the donation box in Healthpoint Pharmacy in Load Street or on the website www.stgeorgeshall.org.uk. Robert Smith, Chairman of Bewdley Development Trust, one of the development partners said “We are absolutely delighted to have reached this stage after over 3 years of planning and funding work. It was hard going at times and the result is a credit to all those involved.” Roger Key, Chairman of Bewdley Festival, another development partner, said “Bewdley now has a superb multi purpose venue right in the middle of town for the whole community to use. The Festival has been delighted to offer its expertise to the project.” Paul Warnett, one of the Trustees of St George’s Hall, said “As owners of the building we have been working for many years on plans to renovate the hall. We are pleased that a way has been found to attract over £900,000 into Bewdley for this purpose.” Viewing opportunities will be available this month for prospective users. Hall bookings can be made by contacting Ellie Hooper on 01299 405516, e mail info@sghvm.org.uk or writing to: SGH Venue Management, Snuff Mill Warehouse (Ground Floor), Park Lane, Bewdley DY12 2EL.

I am writing this whilst my brothers Jim & Ed Millington are cycling over 1000 miles from Land’s End to John O’Groats to raise money for Cancer Research in memory of our dad Tom. Unfortunately, he passed away 4 years ago; we think of him every day and know how

proud he would have been. Dad was on the Town Council and was 1st Bewdley Group Scout Leader for many years. To make the challenge even more difficult, Jim and Ed have been riding unsupported. This means there hasn’t been a car following them on their journey. Instead they have attached panniers to their bike with all their supplies. On Wednesday 3rd July the route chosen came to Bewdley which gave more enthusiasm to complete this ride. The Mayor Linda Candlin and associates welcomed Jim & Ed with family and friends outside the Guildhall. The Knoll School Nursery Class made flags and came to cheer them on too. The children have been following the places on the map and learning about cycling. The Mayor invited us all for afternoon tea in the Parlour which was very kind. We would like to thank Bewdley residents, family, friends and the Knoll School for all their support and donations. Nearly £2000 has been raised so far which is fantastic. To donate go to www.justgiving.com/millington-miles or text mile77(amount) to 70070 Sarah Millington Picture shows: Mayor of Bewdley Cllr Linda Candlin, Wyre Forest District Council’s Chairman Cllr Fran Oborski, Ed Millington, Jim Millington and the brothers’ friends and family at Bewdley Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Gardens.

Judging took place on 13th and 14th July: pubs, tubs, schools, small private gardens, huge private gardens, shop fronts, courtyards, caravan surrounds, churches, group efforts, vegetable gardens and - the hardest of all to judge this year - hanging baskets. What an absolute delight it was; the sun shone and the standard was incredibly high. 'This is apple mint,' said the little girl proudly showing us round her school, 'and this is spearmint.' 'And what is this?' asked the judge, a man who has been in horticulture his whole life and owned garden centres. 'Usual mint,' she replied, to the delight of us all. But to be honest there was nothing 'usual' about anything we saw. What we saw was astonishing: incredibly well tended and productive vegetable gardens, exquisite flower borders, tiny courtyards packed with plants, amazing hanging baskets, gardens that shone. My favourite was to see children with tiny green watering cans going backwards and forwards watering their crops. (Some of the crops had been harvested for Soup Day.) And a school plant sale so successful that a patio table, chairs and umbrella had been bought with the proceeds. The Special Award this year went to a man of 92 who had never entered before. 'I planted these runner beans on the 22nd March, we should be picking them now,' he said. There were wigwams of runner beans the whole length of the fence. A man, like so many others who we had the pleasure of meeting, thrilled and delighted with his garden, and caring for it with real commitment and affection. Like all that we saw, it was a joy to behold. Wendy Oldfield Austen

TOWN COUNCIL NEWS

TOWN COUNCIL MEETING HELD ON 1ST JULY 2013

Road Closure – High Street Councillors were pleased to learn that following expressions of concern last month, the County Council had allowed two-way traffic to operate along Severnside South for the duration of the works in the High Street so as to avoid local residents making the lengthy diversion via Stourport to go to Kidderminster.

Free Car parking for Bewdley? The District Council had agreed in principle that for a trial period of one day a week, there could be free car parking between 10.00am and 4.00pm. The Town Council had been asked to give a preference for which day of the week would best suit traders and businesses. The Mayor had carried out an informal survey but there was no consensus as to which day that should be. After discussion, the Council agreed that Wednesday would be the best day for the trial.

Dog Lane Car Park. The Council had received representations that if the medical centre were relocated to the Dog Lane car park, there would be a substantial reduction in the number of parking spaces particularly during the construction period. The District Council had asked for ideas on how/where extra spaces could be provided. Possible options might be to extend the car park northwards along the riverside; to allow temporary parking along Severnside South and to allow “herringbone” parking in Load Street ie diagonal parking on both sides where it was sufficiently wide. It was recognised each had their problems and so it was agreed to convene a meeting involving the Town/District/County Councils to talk further.

Lighting Column at St Anne Church Councillors heard of criticism as to how in the course of upgrading the street lighting in Load Street, the County Council had been obliged to install a new lighting column close to the war memorial next to St Anne’s. There had been technical problems having it on the adjacent pavement. However, it looked out of place and it was agreed to press the County Council to make some adjustments either to its height or to change its position. Future Town Council meetings Town Council meetings are held at The Guildhall at 7.30pm on the first Monday of each month unless stated otherwise. The next meetings are: 5th August, 2nd September and 7th October. Agendas and Minutes of Town Council and Planning Committee Meetings are posted on the Notice Boards outside the Mayor’s Parlour, in the Guildhall Entrance and by the Library Entrance and on the Town Council’s page of www.bewdley.org.uk Minutes are also available at the Library and at the Town Clerk’s Office. August in the forest

Community News

The Wyre Forest provides us with such an array of rare or remarkable flora and fauna that it is easy to overlook the common. Many of us who pay attention to the natural world have been concerned about falling populations of butterflies, but if you walk across any field, rough grassland (or “rough” in the golfing sense) you are almost certain to see the aptly, if not imaginatively, named meadow brown. The photo shows a female which, unusually in the animal world, is larger and more colourful than the male. The false eye spots on the fore wings are assumed to be a device to frighten off predators and must have been proved by evolution to be successful, although they may be snatched by determined birds. Meadow browns are really a grassland species but I feel justified in including them in an article about the forest because you can encounter them at this time of year at Lodge Hill Farm, Park House, along Tanners Hill and St John’s Lane or any other patch of long grass where they can lay their eggs and the caterpillars can subsequently feed through their long eight or nine month development. I am puzzled to read that they have only four functional legs, in common with the fritillaries. The fore legs are small and brush like and presumably have some function in feeding. Their relative, the speckled wood, is to be seen in the shadier environment of woodland rides. I am writing this on a hot summer’s evening. A breeze that sprang up has died again and it no longer seems to threaten thunder. On cloudy, warm nights like this there will be plenty of flying insects about to feed bats such as the pipistrelle and brown long-eared species that frequent the forest. It would be a good night too to set up a moth trap with its bright light to attract them into a receptacle where they will await identification. There is a surprising variety of day and night-flying moths, many of them very beautiful. (See “Curious incidents in the garden at night-time” by Allan Shepherd for an educational and entertaining read on the subject). Meanwhile, with the kids off school, a day in the forest is a perfect way for everyone to unwind, explore and enjoy nature. Why not get the imagination going with the Forest Fairy Trail on 22nd August to find if there are fairies (or pixies) in the forest? Follow a trail, look for their homes, and join us for some craft activities. It costs £3 per child. No booking is required, just come to the Forestry Commission’s Discovery Centre, Callow Hill at 10.30am (until 12noon). All children must be accompanied by an adult. Bewdley Concert Band

As Bewdley Concert Band comes up to its Third Anniversary Concert at the Mercure Hotel, the future is looking good. Plans for the next two years include tours to the Isle of Man and Germany. The Band was formed by Valerie Blount in October 2010. She was at the time Music Co-ordinator at Bewdley Primary School and felt that Bewdley needed a Community Band. Her partner, Ian Worton, an experienced Musical Director and also Music Development Officer at Telford and Wrekin Music Service agreed, and so the band began with a few pieces of borrowed music and a handful of players. Thanks to the fantastic team spirit it soon grew and has now become a vibrant community group with over 40 members. Over the last three years the band has thrived and established itself within the town. During last year’s Queen’s Jubilee year the band led the celebrations in Jubilee Gardens with a wonderful Proms Concert and played Concerts in Parks across Worcestershire including Bromsgrove, Worcester and Evesham. They also played at Bewdley’s British Legion Concert in November last year. During 2013 they are set to add Kidderminster and Pershore to that list. Bewdley’s Mayor Cllr Linda Candlin has chosen the band as one of her charities during her year of office, considering it a wonderful asset to the community that benefits all ages and brings together the generations. Members from 8 to over 80 years of age share a love of music and enjoy striving to perform to the best of their ability. Many are musicians returning to playing after a long break but some began their playing in the Band’s own Academy which was established last year. The Academy aims to give children and adults the performance skills and confidence to play within the main band. The band has also been supported by Worcestershire Youth Music who supplied a brand new Tuba and also other instruments as well as allowing the band to borrow music from their extensive music library. The Concert takes place at the Mercure on Saturday 23rd September at 7:30. Tickets are available from the website or any band member. The band rehearses on Saturday mornings at Bewdley Primary School at 10:30 till 12:30. and are currently looking especially for Tuba players but welcome anyone who plays a wind instrument. For more information on Bewdley Concert Band or the Academy which starts at 9-50am visit www.bewdleyconcertband.co.uk or ring Valerie Blount on 07813 769904

A Favourite Footpath

Starting at Blackstone car park, cross over the bypass (built 1987), past the Toll House (rebuilt in 1820 and a NGS garden) and follow the 45 National Cycle Network route. To the left are the iconic poppy fields, part of Worcestershire Wildlife Fund's bold attempts at recreating a rich biodiverse heathland. A hundred metres on, spot the iron railway boundary marker of 1861. The graceful arch of the railway viaduct is heavy with silence and overhanging ivy. Weave straight on upwards through a world of bird song, rustling leaves and statuesque trees with occasional glimpses of farmland, distant hills and circling buzzards. Where else in the world can you hear bird song, lions roaring, a steam train passing? Note the profusion of wild flower colours.

At the summit, turn right into a large neglected field and take in the view. In the distance, the Malverns rise majestically; all that's left of violent earth movements and volcanic action some 680 million years ago when this patch of land was located way down south of the equator. To your left the woods there once housed the American hospital during WW 2. In fact, this whole area played a major role in wars dating back to 1890s. This common acted as an army training ground and the railway moved ammunition and troops. The walk leads up to the radio mast providing us with a magnificent view of the Devil's Spittlefull, the Iron Age camp at Wassell Hill and on to the Clee Hills. Now follow a sandy track down through the woods over the SVR tunnel and on to the common at the rear of the Safari Park (started in 1973). Now that the birch, broom and bracken have been cleared, it's encouraging to see new growth and varied wildlife. To think that 300 million years ago this was just a vast desert with very little life. Then it's under another viaduct (a quick wave to the SVR train) and back onto the Dropping Wells Farm track, the cycle network and Blackstone. The history of our planet in one walk. Tony Redstall
