The Bridge
November 2013
Remembrance Sunday
On 10th November, shortly before 11.00am, a group of people dressed in ceremonial robes will leave the Guildhall to process to the War Memorial. There they will be joined by a parade of Standard Bearers, members of the Royal British Legion, the local Guides and Scouts and representatives from many organisations in town. Members of the Fire Service, Photo by Sam Moore the Red Cross and Military and Naval associations will be there. The streets will be full of townspeople joining this act of remembrance. Bewdley’s civic party, dressed in distinctive blue gowns with full regalia, adds to the formality of the occasion and provides a link with ceremonies that have taken place over the last century.
Leading the civic party is the Town Constable, currently Chris Hart. The holder of this honorary position wears a fore and aft hat and gown trimmed in silver. He carries a staff, a symbolic link with constables since at least 1836. The current staff is made of oak from the Wyre Forest and tipped at each end with metal. The Bewdley Coat of Arms, made in the jewellery quarter in Birmingham, is fixed to the top.
Two Mace Bearers, David Whale and Janet Hart, carry solid silver maces, hallmarked 1710. One of only two pairs in England given by Queen Anne, they are symbolic weapons to remind the people of the sovereign's power and authority. They bear the large initials A.R. Anne Regina. Originally the maces would have been carried on ceremonial occasions by the Constables. Nowadays official mace bearers wear royal blue gowns and tricorn hats.
A fore and aft hat with gold band distinguishes the Mayor, currently Linda Candlin, from the other Councillors. The unusual blue gown is a reference to Bewdley's time as an inland port and its maritime connections. Nearly all other Mayors wear red gowns. The Mayoral gold chain and robe with fur collar were first acquired at the time of Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee in 1897. The trend was set by Kidderminster who bought theirs ten years earlier at the time of Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee. Robes for Bewdley Councillors were first introduced in 1949 by Mayor Charles R. Pritchard. Prior to that the Councillors wore best everyday dress but Mr. Pritchard is reputed to have said that he was fed up with being followed in his regalia at ceremonial occasions by "rag, tail and bobtail".

Welcome to November’s edition of The Bridge.
We were delighted that Bridge readers responded so positively to our photographic feature last month and are grateful to all those people who contributed. Do keep sending your photographs to us at the email address below so we can celebrate the best of our town. We are particularly pleased to receive pictures of events that happen during the year as well as other sights and moments you capture on camera.
One major event in Bewdley’s calendar takes place at the end of this month. Turn to page 23 to read what is on offer at this year’s Christmas Lights Festival. Other reminders that we are starting the build up to Christmas are the Traidcraft Christmas Fair and the Cards for Good Causes’ pop up shop in Bewdley Library. Details are on page 15 of how you can make a difference through your card and gift shopping. In the colour section, Linda Iles reminds us of the beauty of winter woodlands and contemplates how life might change as mains electricity comes to her forest home. Ron Capell takes us along part of the Worcestershire Way and celebrates the glorious countryside on our doorstep. If you have any favourite footpaths you would like to share, please let us know.
Elsewhere in the magazine, Bewdley vet Jeremy Hall grapples with the controversial issue of pet neutering and offers his advice on page 43. Please tell us of any general questions you would like Jeremy to answer in his monthly column, whether you are a pet owner or not. And if the dark nights offer you little cheer, November brings you three lively concerts on Saturday evenings to lift the spirits. Information in What’s On and details in the magazine.
Have a good month

Behind the Baton
I'm writing in eager anticipation of the four festival concerts I'm going to next week and I will give you my views on those in the December issue. We had an excellent hors d'oeuvres to the festival during the harvest weekend with live music in the park from the acclaimed harpist, singer and songwriter Jennifer Crook. I have all her CDs but have never seen her live, so it was a real treat to hear such a wonderful folk musician and her beautifully balanced band in the lovely autumnal sunshine. If you like soft and relaxing folk, then I can recommend any of Jenny's recordings. Her songs are inspired by such lovely ideas such as an old railway yard or her next door neighbour and her music will leave you feeling chilled and at peace.
Maybe not so chilled and peaceful but very exciting nonetheless is the next concert from Bewdley Choral Society on Saturday 16th November. The choir are rehearsing furiously for "A Night at the Opera". It promises to be a glorious evening, with music from across the operatic repertoire. Not only will you get to hear some of opera's most famous and uplifting choruses but you will also be serenaded by a trio of magnificent soloists, Elizabeth MacDonald, Wilhelm Theunissen and Alan Fairs, who will be performing a selection of well known arias. Choosing a programme for such a concert is a delicate balance because one could easily pack the evening with blockbuster numbers, but there will be plenty of contrasts from the lyrical soothing lilt of Mozart's Voyagers Chorus, to the wine induced merriment of Verdi's Brindisi and the majestic glory of Mascagni's Easter Hymn. The choir are really enjoying working towards the concert (despite the extra challenge of singing in so many different languages) so we hope to see you there and.... Godiamo, la tazza, la tazza e I'll cantico! Alastair Elliott

1st Wribbenhall Guides will celebrate 60 years in June 2014 Bewdley District Girlguiding is 90 years old in 2014 Join us!
The Guide Section is open to all girls aged 10 – 14 years, regardless of race, religion or the school they attend.
1st Wribbenhall Guides is currently the only guide unit in the Bewdley District, which covers Arley, Bewdley, Far Forest, Rock and Wribbenhall. Meetings are at Bewdley Guide HQ - Old Grammar School, High Street, Bewdley - every Thursday during school term time from 7 pm until 9 pm. A group of senior girls aged 14 and above meet at the same time in their own room and are in the process of forming a Ranger unit.
We have opportunities to camp, cook outdoors, do archery, target shooting, mountain biking, water sports, climbing and abseiling, go on sleepovers. At weekly meetings the programme has included puppet theatre, dancing, playing and listening to music of all genres, playing and listening, exploring our town, walking at night, gardening and cooking. We have had parties, made parcels for the troops in Afghanistan, done some fund raising, and celebrated diverse festivals. During the coming year we are planning to tackle sixty 60 minute challenges to mark our 60th birthday.
At the moment spaces are available. It is not necessary for girls to have been either a Rainbow or a Brownie to join Guides. Parents wishing to know more can contact Brenda Goode on 01299 402676, or pop in to a meeting to meet the girls and their leaders. There is also a comprehensive website at www.girlguiding.org.uk giving more information about Girlguiding.
In the same year as Bewdley Guiding is 90 years old, Wribbenhall Guides are looking forward to celebrating their 60th birthday in June 2014 and would love to hear from anybody who has had any association with the unit, or guiding in Bewdley, since then. It is time to dig out those photographs.

Cards For Good Causes Christmas 2013
Again this year, Cards for Good Causes is opening its shop in Bewdley Library on 11th November until 20th December.
Opening hours are 10.00am - 4.30pm Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and 9.30am-1.00pm on Saturdays. Cards for Good Causes (CFGC) sells cards on behalf of specific charities.
The charities pay to have the cards designed, printed and distributed by CFGC through its national network of shops. In other words, the charities invest in the print and production of the cards and look for a return on that investment. Because the cards are sold by CFGC but printed by the charities, CFGC is able to return a higher percentage to the charities, whilst at the same time retaining a very small percentage of the price to cover its running costs. We give back at least 75p in every ÂŁ1. The Bewdley shop sells cards for over 30 national and local charities, including Kemp Hospice and, Worcestershire Wild Life. Stocking fillers, gift tags and wrapping paper are also available.
Over 30 local volunteers from Bewdley and the surrounding areas give their time to run the shop. Please do come and see us, if only to browse.

Volunteering in Nepal
Community News
“Everyone is my brother”. These words sum up the delightful attitude of the 37 orphans in Naxal Orphanage, Kathmandu where I worked as a volunteer throughout September. The words were spoken by a 14-year-old who - if she wins a singing competition - plans to spend her prize money on an operation for another orphan who has lost much of his hearing. We stayed in a very pleasant hotel which was about 10 minutes’ journey from the orphanage. From Monday to Friday we worked with 9 pre-school children, helping them with their English by reading stories to them, or hearing them read, playing games with them, singing, dancing, blowing bubbles and generally doing all the things children everywhere like to do. It was sometimes hard work but it was always great fun. The schoolchildren sometimes joined us because there was no school due to the celebration of religious festivals or because they had finished their exams. Our weekends were free and we were able to visit several tourist attractions. On one Saturday our group of volunteer teachers took everyone on a picnic to some beautiful Botanical Gardens. This gave the children the opportunity to run about, make a noise and generally do their own thing - not possible at the Orphanage due to very cramped accommodation. A site for a new, more spacious Orphanage has been purchased and we hope to attend the foundation-stone-laying ceremony in 2015… Sue Brown
Thank you
Members of Bewdley Historical Research Group would like to thank the Bewdley Carnival committee for their recent gift towards the work of the Group in their ongoing research into the history of the area.
Due to unforseen problems the Research Group's 24th publication, Bewdley, A Miscellany, has been delayed but will be produced as soon as possible. It covers a range of topics which, it is hoped, will be of interest to most people.
Did you know that there were two Bewdley men at the battle of Waterloo not just one as previously thought? A Bewdley man fought at Trafalgar. A Bewdley nurse was awarded a medal by the Serbians for her work in WWI.

Wribbenhall Parish Rooms - Community Spirit
On Wednesday 9th October, 12 Managers from HSBC descended on the Parish Room to redecorate the lower part of the building as part of their community support. They came from all parts of Worcestershire and beyond, including Shewsbury, Telford, Leominster, Bridgnorth, Kidderminster and of course Bewdley. The sun even came out for a while to shine on them! For our part we sustained them with chip butties, home made cake and tea by the bucket load. We are so grateful to them for their support and hard work. Bookings for the hall please contact Carol 07971216462
The cinema update in last month's Bridge said that barring any hitches we would be showing two movies at the end of October. The film buffs among you will have noticed that this did not happen. Strangely, this was not as the result of 'hitches' but the opposite – the St George's Hall management's intention to order the high-specification, permanent equipment needed to support Cinema in the Hall months ahead of the original schedule. The plan is now to do this during November and to provide a full programme of films early in 2014. We could be offering the 'taster' screenings using the installed projector, screen and speakers as early as December.
Our planned October screenings would have used hired equipment and carried an element of financial as well as reputational risk. Why take this risk and ask you to pay to see films using temporary equipment when you can enjoy the complete experience weeks later? So the volunteers running Cinema in the Hall agreed not to screen The Legend of 1900 and The Great Gatsby during Bewdley's Octoberfest. We're sorry if you had planned to come – there will be other opportunities soon. This was a postponement in the interests of giving our patrons the very best Cinema in the Hall experience we can. Film screenings in Bewdley are back – but we're asking you to wait a little longer. Please look out for more news in December's Bridge.

Bewdley Christmas Lights Festival Saturday 30th November
Festivities start at 2pm and there is something for everyone. Eighty stalls, both trade and charities, will provide lots of Christmas gifts together with opportunities to support your favourite good cause. During the afternoon music is provided by local bands and choirs as well as jugglers and puppeteers. This year we will be joined by Signal 107 and Mixie the Bear. Come and say 'hello' to your favourite presenter. For those who like the fun of the fair, Jennings Brothers Fair will be on Load Street car park. As always, there will be a variety of food and drinks stalls for you to enjoy. We expect that the 'Park & Ride' will operate as usual during the afternoon and evening. The parade lines up at 5pm and will then to be led over the bridge and up to the Guildhall at 5.15pm by the Children’s Nativity Group, Santa, the Civic Party and many others. If your organisation would like to join in, please let us know. The town lights will be switched on by the Mayor at 5.30pm and the festivities will continue until 6.30pm. Because of the size of the event, it is necessary for us to implement various road closures. We realise that these will cause inconvenience but they are necessary in the interest of public safety and we try to keep them to a minimum. Please accept our apologies. Closures are as follows: Load Street Car Park
From 6am until midnight
Severnside North and South
From 10am until 8pm
Load Street Parking Bays Load Street
From 6am until 8pm
From 12.30pm until 8pm
Would you like to take part? If you would like to have a stall (trade or charity) contact Ann on 01299 404226 (lymanhughes34@aol.com)
If you can help with erecting/dismantling stalls, or helping to marshal the event contact Maggie on 01299 303065 (maggiedalloway@hotmail.co.uk)
Exhibition of Christmas Trees & Festive Advent Wreaths
This takes place during the week commencing Saturday 23 November in St Anne's Church. The trees and wreaths, decorated by local businesses, charities and community groups provide an introduction to the Christmas Lights Festival which takes place on the day before Advent Sunday. We hope lots of people will visit St Anne's this week and take time to enjoy the display. Don't forget to enjoy a cup of tea or coffee and some wonderful cakes while you are there. If your organisation would like to take part in the display please contact Ann or Maggie as soon as possible.
All that leaves is for us to thank you for your support and understanding, and to wish you all a very happy and peaceful Christmas.

PLASTERING
Woolly Postbox
I love it! Our pillar box outside the post office has done the sensible thing and got itself a nice woolly beret for the winter. I think lots of us were sorry to see the knitted bicycle finally go to that great woolly home in the sky so it's nice to know that our anonymous knitter hasn't run out of ideas. The postman and Postman Pat mail van on the pompom is a particularly charming touch. I wonder if anywhere round town needs a knitted scarf. That's about as far as my prowess extends. Watch this space!
What a shame - as we go to press someone has walked off with it!
Bewdley Harvest Fair Success!
The weather was fine as crowds flocked to Bewdley for the Harvest Fair on Saturday 5th & Sunday 6th October. The annual Shire Horses kicked off events by parading through the town and stopping by the Guild Hall in Load Street. The third Bewdley Harvest Soup Trail was a sell out as 200 people visited seven pubs and cafes in the town. The standard of soups was very high this year and many people said that it was difficult to pick a winner but after the counting was done, Emma Passey of Paisley Flour Catering was presented with the Soup Trail trophy by the Mayor of Bewdley, Cllr Linda Candlin. Emma said “It was a great day. I really enjoyed it. Thanks so much. I think it will just keep getting bigger and bigger. Brilliant for Bewdley.”
With craft and food stalls in Jubilee Gardens and Severn Side South the town was buzzing and many people visited the apple pressing, wood turning demonstrations and rare pigs on display in the Orchard, Jubilee Gardens.
The Wytchwood Festival of Dance performed at various venues around the town culminating in all 10 sides assembling on Severn Side South for a “dance off” which attracted huge crowds.
Jennifer Crook who has played with Snow Patrol, Eddi Reader and Chris Difford performed with her trio on the Green Stage in Jubilee Gardens and played a lovely set on a sunny Sunday afternoon. She went down a storm! Also on offer were guided walks throughout the town led by Bewdley Civic Society. Around 7000 visited the Bewdley Museum over the weekend confirming how busy the town was.

Bewdley Harvest Fair Success!
Bewdley River Birds
The River Severn in Bewdley sees many varied bird species during the year. Spring and summer bring the African visitors of Swift, Swallow, Sand & House Martin to delight us. Residents include Coot, Kingfisher, Moorhen on the ponds, Pigeon, Crow, Jackdaw, Mandarin and Mallards ducks. We also see Gulls, Swans, Canada and farmyard Geese. Swans in particular have become used to asking for food from locals and visitors alike, which usually takes the form of bread together with chips, cakes and biscuits.
All of these are detrimental to their long term health. Bread is of little nutritional value with a fat, salt and yeast content which is no good to them. A really good alternative is mixed corn (mostly wheat, with maize & black sunflower seeds) All the river birds love this type of mix except for small black headed gulls who prefer small fish, like sprats.
When feeding mixed grain on the river the feed mostly sinks, so a shallow spot 10 – 20 cm deep at the water’s edge has to be found where it can be reached safely by all. Be careful on the grassy banks!
In winter, birds are so hungry they lose all their fear of people and come up onto the banks to be fed. It’s a wonderful experience for all to be close to our feathered friends. Bags of corn and an information sheet are available from Severn Edge Vets. Please help feed the birds if you can. Nick Taylor
Congratulations to Merchants Restaurant for being voted one of the UK’s 50 best fish and chip shops.
Thoughts from the Secret Gardener
Community News
Autumn really is a lovely season. It has a mellow beginning with soft light and gentle breezes and finishes with big skies, northern light, tumbling clouds and sometimes heavy weather. When the first proper frost hits us, the dahlias will come to an end and the leaves will come down big-time. The best garden tool I have ever bought is a plastic leaf rake costing £6.00. It is the perfect thing for getting the leaves off the lawn (apart from a strong wind which blows them into next door!) Time to get the gladioli up, dry off the corms and store them away for next year. As long as they are dry and frost free, they will keep well. There are still a few in flower at the moment. Lovely! Everybody’s asters, or Michaelmas daisies – call them what you will - are good this year. I have seen lots giving a spectacular autumn show. Of course, we are lucky to have the national collection close by in Colwall where top quality plants are on sale. For years I have grown Evesham Special sprouts and every year they “blow” open, so this time I opted for seed of a modern hybrid. I have been rewarded with a crop of lovely firm, tight sprouts of a good size. Oh well, so much for the old open pollinated varieties!

Operation Christmas Child This Christmas, help to bring joy to a child being brought up in a disadvantaged community in another part of the world by filling a shoebox with age related goodies. Ideas of what to include can be found in leaflets available from the coffee bar in St. Anne's church centre. If you are unable to fill a box but would like to make a small donation, then we would be very pleased to receive small tubes of children's toothpaste or packets of crayons or felt tip pens or small packets of in-date sweets like dolly mixtures or chewits. Boxes need to be completed by November 10th and left in St. Anne's church. Many thanks

Bewdley Library
As a nation we are growing older – those of us with teenagers the quickest of all. One of the best ways of making sure we stay fit and healthy is to take responsibility for ourselves; looking after our bodies (relatively straightforward) and our minds (often less so).
In addition to our jigsaw swap (good for the brain) and our Age UK advisor visiting, on the first Thursday of every month we are now going to be joined by two nurses who will be available to carry out simple health checks such as blood pressure, and give general health advice. This will be a drop-in session, and if anything needs further attention they will be able to signpost the appropriate course of action for you.
This is an NHS service and a wonderful opportunity for the library to host a worthwhile community initiative. Come along and give it a go. Kay Sanderson Bewdley Library

Pets and Neutering
Community News
In my day to day life as a Vet, I am frequently asked the ‘neutering’ question. Amongst all the advice out there, opinion varies and you can get a very different answer depending on whether you ask Google, your neighbour, or the Vet. So, here’s the advice from a Vet’s point of view. Pets should be neutered to avoid unplanned pregnancy and litters of unwanted puppies and kittens. This is not, however, the only reason because there are plenty of health benefits to neutering your pets. Female dogs (bitches) should, where possible, be neutered at 6 months of age, or 3 months after their first season. This not only eliminates the chance of pregnancy and greatly reduces their chance of getting breast cancer in later life but also eliminates the risk of them becoming ill with a life threatening condition called pyometra (infected womb). Neutering male dogs (from 6 months of age) will eliminate the risk of testicular cancer, and greatly reduce their chance of suffering from prostate disease in later life. Cats, of course, deserve a mention too. A breeding queen can have 3 or more litters per year if not neutered. And males can smell a female in season for miles! People often report 6 or more tom cats hanging around every 3 weeks. They soon lose interest if the female isn’t flirting the other side of the patio doors. Neutering will stop them coming into season, and will stop them flirting. Most of the time someone owns those tom cats (entire males). If that’s you, neutering them will not only help to reduce their wandering, but will reduce the nuisance they cause for others in the area. We can’t promise anything, but it should also reduce their notorious foul tomcat smell. Pick up the phone and have a chat with your local vet for more advice.

St. Anne’s Chess Club
St. Anne’s Chess Club is up and running! It started on Wednesday 25th September with just six people, but from small acorns big oak trees grow. We hope to encourage more people of all ages to play chess. Jim Friar, past President of Kidderminster Chess Club, has helped us tremendously in setting up the club. Experienced players and those new to the game have all benefited from his tutoring. We hope that Wednesday will be a drop in for a coffee or tea, chat and a game of Chess. Please help us to make a success of this project - a new venture for Bewdley. Keith Thompson

TOWN COUNCIL NEWS
TOWN COUNCIL MEETING HELD ON 7th OCTOBER 2013
Local Policing
Prior to the Council meeting Councillors had met with the Police & Crime Commissioner together with the Police Superintendent for North Worcestershire to talk about the problems as to local policing that had been highlighted in the recent survey reported here last month. The meeting was a positive one with the news that an increased number (three) Community Support Officers are now allocated to Bewdley and that their shift hours have been extended to cover evenings. Electoral Review of Wyre Forest
The Boundary Commission is in the process of carrying out an electoral review of Wyre Forest District Council which may lead to a reduction in the number of District Councillors from 42 to 33. One consequence of that is new ward boundaries will have to be drawn which will affect Bewdley at both District Council and Town Council levels. Councillors agreed to set up a Working Group to put forward recommendations to the Boundary Commission. The general public are also encouraged to do so with the deadline for submissions being 10th December. Traffic in High Street and Welch Gate
Councillors discussed again the longstanding conflict between pedestrians and motorists along the High Street following a well-publicised incident. The idea of a one way system involving Severnside South southwards (as at present), Lax Lane (westwards) and High Street (northwards) had been suggested but this presented further problems including the risk of an increase in traffic speeds. Councillors agreed to take steps to have a 20 mph speed limit introduced throughout the town centre despite previous objections from the Highway Authority and Police and also to revisit the issues involving traffic problems in Welch Gate. Bewdley Fire Station
Councillors heard concerns from members of the public as to an option being considered by the Hereford & Worcester Fire & Rescue Authority that the fire station may be closed. The proposals affecting the whole of the two Counties are currently out for public consultation. This will be discussed at a future meeting of the Council. Future Town Council meetings Town Council meetings are held at The Guildhall at 7.30pm on the first Monday of each month unless stated otherwise. The next meetings are: 4th November, 2nd December and 6th January. Agendas and Minutes of Town Council and Planning Committee Meetings are posted on the Notice Boards outside the Mayor’s Parlour, in the Guildhall Entrance and by the Library Entrance and on the Town Council’s page of www.bewdley.org.uk Minutes are also available at the Library and at the Town Clerk’s Office. From mid-November onwards, the Severn Gallery will play host to an exhibition by the Worcestershire Wildlife Trust; the displays will highlight the valuable work carried out locally. Worcestershire Wildlife Trust owns or manages over 70 nature reserves across the county. Their staff and volunteers aim to restore, recreate and reconnect fragmented natural habitats by working closely with other landowners, managers and communities. One local example is the heathland at Devil’s Spittleful & Rifle Range Reserve, which along with Wyre Forest District Council, it is restoring and maintaining in order to create a diverse habitat for a wide range of wildlife. The Severn Gallery is available for hire by artists or community groups. Please contact the museum for an application pack; the closing date for applications for 2014 is 30th November. Over half term, there will be a selection of Halloween themed children’s craft activities on offer, and families are invited to experience ‘A Nightmare at the Museum’ on Thursday 31st October. The Museum will remain open until 8pm on that evening for games, a lucky dip, spooky trails, delicious food and ghost stories in the Brass Foundry. Visitors are invited to come along in their scariest outfit and bring along a carved pumpkin for the competition. Pumpkins will be on sale for £3 from 28th October. With Christmas looming, you may wish to come along to buy some unique gifts from our craft studios and shop. Keep an eye out for locally produced foodstuff and items made on site by our multi-talented resident craftspeople.
From 4th November until 15th December, the Museum and Cafe will open Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 11am – 3pm. For more information about the Museum including opening times please refer to our website www.wyreforestdc.gov.uk/museum or phone 0845 603 5699. A Favourite Footpath by Ron Capell
This is a long, fascinating and rewarding walk of some 20 miles following the frequent pear marker motifs of the Worcestershire Way attached to stiles and fences.
From Bewdley the Way climbs through Ribbesford Woods before veering right to the Lakes Golf Course and crossing the scoop of the valley and up the facing hill. Topography of the Way dictates the pace to take the undulating miles. Down the next valley Dick Brook, running east, was blasted to its bedrock in the 2010 flash floods.
Following an exhilarating walk of some 8 miles the Way climbs to the eastern extremity of the Abberley Hills where rock, laid down some 400 million years ago, is exposed in the gouged quarry of Shavers End which like neighbouring Shelsley Beachamp’s blue pooled quarry, disorientates in its rustic surroundings. Abberley Hill is the highest stretch the of the walk. Ample woodland cover of chestnut, sycamore, larch and yew gives shelter and shadow in summer with tantalising glimpses of a chequered landscape far below. Walsgrove Hill invites imaginings of medieval Brueghal labourers about their rustic business. Sheep graze and round the hill’s eastern flank white geese fatten for Christmas.
The southward ridgeway to Rodge Hill, Martley and Kingswood Common is relatively easy and has unsurpassed views of the Teme Valley. Wild flowers abound: primroses, bugle, purple vetch, violets, comfrey, hare bells, fox gloves, toad flax, anemones, orchids and hidden dwarf wild daffodils. Overhead buzzards circle Photo by Paul Brooker above fields, hamlets and farms. Once the path here was the only route across trackless forest; now one scarcely meets a soul. Kingswoood Common plunges to the Teme before climbing the wooded ridge, where an abandoned orchard still survives. Across flatland the footpath angles to Berrow Green and the sign of the accommodating Admiral Rodney. Finally, big headed hares stare before they run across green pasture and the path descends. A holly tree trunk is initialled by wartime sweethearts’ carved protestations of ‘Love’. Did they or their love survive?
The Ankerdine Hill provides last magnificent views. The path down is precipitative, zig zagging to the Talbot Inn. After refreshments, ‘This’ or ‘That’ it’s time to catch my homeward bus.
November in the Forest
The leaves are falling and the clocks have been turned back. As the winter approaches I reassure myself by taking a look at the wood pile, reduced to nothing last winter/spring but now full again and, I hope, pretty dry after a good summer. It was a busy summer too of trench-digging to bring 1 km of cable from the end of St John’s Lane to Uncllys Farm, and I look forward to 18th of this month when Western Power are due to throw the switch which brings us mains electricity. After celebrating (loudly and brightly!) we must restrain ourselves so that the good habits brought by living nine years ‘off grid’ are not lost: our dishwasher can look forward to being used for its designed purpose rather than as a glorified plate rack, but I’ll continue to dry the laundry on the washing line and airer!
Bare trees and short days have their own charm. I can enjoy looking through the woods and having more chance of spotting deer. Over the years I’ve got better at identifying trees by their winter silhouettes and twigs. The birch are fairly easy and even when viewed from above the canopy, distinguish themselves by the reddish-brown of their twigs. Oak twigs have fat clusters of brown buds and beech have slender, pointed buds on equally slender stems. The sycamore has green twigs with rounded green buds, the ash has dull twigs with black buds set opposite each other in pairs, and everyone knows the sticky buds and horseshoe-shaped leaf scars of the horse chestnut! Have a look when you next walk in the woods and take a good identification book such as Alan Mitchell’s ‘Field guide to the trees of Britain and Northern Europe’.
Families walking the Forestry Commission’s Yellow Route at Callow Hill can enjoy the Stick Man trail, based on the children’s book by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler. The 12 panels along the trail have fascinating facts and fun activities for children and the leaflet, which is being sold in the Forest Café for £1, contains additional activities and a pack of pipe cleaners to help you make your own Stick Man.
Willow twigs will be put to a more traditional use on the Basket Making day at Uncllys on 9th November. Ring 01299 403691 as soon as possible if you would like to join us making your own decorative and useful tray with willow and bark – the course lasts from 10am to 4pm and costs £45. Linda Iles
