Traidcraft

A huge thank you to everyone who supported the Traidcraft Christmas Fair at St Anne’s Church on 9th November. We had a great day with sales of £3,500 and it’s wonderful that so many local folk support this annual event. If you missed it don’t despair. There’s still time to buy lots of Christmas goodies from our extended stall in St Anne’s, open from 10am-2pm Tuesday to Saturday. Please contact me if you wish to order particular items.

We now have a beautiful cookbook,“bake a difference” featuring all the wonderful fair trade ingredients which Traidcraft sells. Recipes are favourite ones sent in by Fairtraders and tested by a professional cookbook writer, so they’re all tried and tested in a proper home kitchen. It’s beautifully produced with colour photographs and step-by-step instructions with recipes from emergency chocolate cake to cashew nut curry and focaccia to flapjacks. The price is £12.99, but I’m able to offer it, for a short time only, at the special introductory price of £10.

Did you know that 80% of people would rather receive a Christmas card than a festive message via social media? Mags Vaughan, Chief Executive of Traidcraft, says ”It’s a nice idea putting up a single card at the back of church or in the office which everyone signs, or sending greetings to friends on your Facebook wall. But if everyone did this then some people would have an empty mantelpiece at Christmas. Imagine how that would make you feel. So if you really want to make someone feel really loved then buy charity Christmas cards and send them this year.” In the past five years Traidcraft has been able to give over half a million pounds to Christian Aid, CAFOD and SCIAF from our Christmas cards and craft sales and top-up donations. Traidcraft is of course not a charity as such, but an alternative way of doing business, but it does have a charitable arm,Traidcraft Exchange, through which its development work is channelled. 900,000 people benefit directly from our projects. The Bridge is the community voice of Bewdley

It is free and delivered by volunteers to more than 4,600 homes every month Visit us at www.bewdleybridge.org.uk

There is a distinctly seasonal feel to this last magazine of 2013.

Our secret gardener has been putting the garden to bed for the winter and Linda Iles celebrates hoar frost, holly and mistletoe. Lynne Fox loves walking whatever the season and guides us round one of her favourite paths near Dudmaston this month. Meanwhile, Bridge vet Jeremy Hall warns of the perils for pets that may be lurking under Christmas trees. Turn to page 47 to find out more.

As winter approaches, Bewdley Medical Centre is asking Bridge readers to look out for elderly people who may be vulnerable when the weather changes. Contact details of organisations that provide excellent help and assistance are on page 31. Please help make sure this information reaches those who may need it.

Friends of Northwood Lane Park is a recently formed group that aims to bring improvements to a popular part of town. See our centre pages to discover what they hope to do and how you can become involved. Bewdley Development Trust is also looking for people to become involved as Directors with the valuable work they do for the town. Read more on page 50. And, of course, December’s magazine is full of events to celebrate Christmas: Concerts and Carols, Nativity services and Father Christmas. May the joys of Christmas be with you, however you spend this season.

Margaret, Martin, Nick, Gary, Chris, Peter and Gill wish you all a very happy Christmas and a peaceful New Year.

Behind the Baton

This year, I was lucky enough to attend four of the Bewdley Festival Concerts and you can read some of my individual reviews elsewhere in the magazine. All four were excellent in their own way, and I can only congratulate the Festival organisers on the quality of artists they are able to attract to our small town. For me personally, the standout gig was Clare Teal, but I enjoyed all the concerts and I hope we can continue to see such great artists grace the stages of our Festival again next year.

Sat watching the rain fall over a gloomy, misty Bewdley this morning it's hard to conjure up thoughts of Christmas, but as a Musical Director I have already been thinking about and rehearsing Christmas Music for quite a few weeks now. For me, Carol singing starts always with the Bewdley Christmas Lights Festival but, this year, I'm also delighted to be conducting my first Christmas concert in St Anne's with the Bewdley Choral Society on Saturday 15th December. This will be a truly christmassy concert where we will be joined by local group: Nos Novem. There will be an eclectic mixture of Christmas music, both traditional and contemporary and there will also be plenty of opportunity for audience participation with some traditional Carols, all with the scent of mince pies and mulled wine in the background. It will very much be a light-hearted event for all the family, so if you wish to get yourself in the Christmas mood via the gift of music, please join us in St Anne’s on Saturday 15th December. The music draws on familiar Christmas carol melodies and reworks them into a variety of styles and moods. The concert is free and all are welcome.

Bewdley Festival Revisited Clare Teal – Mercure Hotel, Monday 14th October 8pm

Festival Monday saw another sell-out concert in the Mercure Ball room as the Jazz Singer and radio presenter Clare Teal performed a great range of songs with her terrific Trio in support. Clare is a very versatile singer with a huge range of colour to her performance. She can get your feet tapping with lively up-tempo numbers, scat with the best of them, croon you with a warming ballad or go all soulful with some more contemporary songs. In the early stages of the first half, we had songs from Rogers and Hart, Ella Fitzgerald (of course), and Gershwin. All were brilliantly delivered with great backup from the tight trio of Grant Windsor, Ben Reynolds and Simon Little. The rapport between Clare and within the band was palpable and their enthusiasm for the music was infectious.

Clare’s sardonic Yorkshire humour came through in her very amusing introductions and random comments. Conversely, there wasn’t a dry eye in the house following Grant Windsor’s tribute to his childhood music teacher who had died the previous day. He played the most moving extended Piano intro to Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” and by the end, you could have heard a pin drop in the room. In any concert, it’s a rare moment when an entire audience is totally captivated, but this was one such moment, and I don’t think anyone who was there will forget it.

This concert was the highlight of the festival; I loved every minute of it. The programme was great, the delivery was first class and there was a great vibe in the band which translated across to the audience. I was buzzing for hours afterwards and I hope Clare is back in Bewdley very soon. Alastair Elliott

Cards For Good Causes Christmas 2013

Again this year, Cards for Good Causes is opening its shop in Bewdley Library on 11th November until 20th December. Opening hours are 10.00am - 4.30pm Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and 9.30am-1.00pm on Saturdays. Cards for Good Causes (CFGC) sells cards on behalf of specific charities. The charities pay to have the cards designed, printed and distributed by CFGC through its national network of shops. In other words, the charities invest in the print and production of the cards and look for a return on that investment. Because the cards are sold by CFGC but printed by the charities, CFGC is able to return a higher percentage to the charities, whilst at the same time retaining a very small percentage of the price to cover its running costs. We give back at least 75p in every £1. The Bewdley shop sells cards for over 30 national and local charities, including Kemp Hospice and, Worcestershire Wild Life. Stocking fillers, gift tags and wrapping paper are also available. Over 30 local volunteers from Bewdley and the surrounding areas give their time to run the shop. Please do come and see us, if only to browse.

Bewdley Remembers

Community News

Remembrance Sunday 2013 saw one of the best parades in Bewdley for a long time. Hundreds of people gathered for the occasion and more than 250 took part in the ceremony, representing the armed forces and many local organisations. It was nice to see several of the people watching wearing their medals. The church was full to capacity. The parade was led by the Bewdley Scout and Guide Band and the exhortation was spoken by the Secretary of the RBL Cllr Carol Gittins as the church clock struck 11am. Following the church service the Mayor of Bewdley Cllr Linda Candlin took the salute. In the afternoon a church service was held at All Saints Church, Wribbenhall and wreaths were laid. On the 9th November 40 members of the Bewdley Branch of the RBL and the Women's Section attended the Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall, London. The Festival was very moving and I doubt if there were many dry eyes at the end of the evening. Paul Gittins MBE Chairman Bewdley RBL

Christingle Service

Community News

Sunday 8th December, 4pm

All Saints’ Church Wribbenhall

All ages are welcome to this family-friendly service where we give out Christingles and support the work of the Children’s Society.

Informal & atmospheric - it’s the perfect preparation for the coming of Christmas ! Before the service you are warmly invited to a Messy Christingle Workshop 2 to 3.30pm at All Saints’ Church, Wribbenhall Creativity, Arts & Crafts for children of all ages

Children need to be accompanied by an adult

Deadline for January’s issue is Sunday 8th December Thanks to financial support from Bewdley Festival, the digital projection equipment needed to show films in high quality on a big screen will be installed in St George's Hall in the middle of this month. The volunteers who will run ‘Cinema in the Hall’ have been putting together a full programme of films and this will start towards the end of January.

The planned programme will consist mostly of films that have been on general release for a few weeks but won't usually be available on DVD for some time. Generally, they will be films that have attracted good audiences and critical acclaim but have not been shown in local cinemas. Some will be 'blockbusters' and some will be less well publicised. Current plans include additional 'club' screenings for classic or lesser-known, recent releases for movie enthusiasts. If you'd like to become a cinema volunteer or receive an e-mail newsletter from time to time updating you with programme news, please send an e-mail to : cinema@thehall-bewdley.org.uk.

You can also follow us on Twitter @bewdleycinema or 'like' us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BewdleyCinema.

Bewdley Festival Revisited Andy Fairweather Low – Mercure Hotel, Friday 11th November 8pm

The Festival opened in style with this sell out concert where the enthusiastic audience were well entertained by Andy and his band. The show kicked off with a couple of great blues numbers which got my feet tapping straight away before moving into Andy’s own extraordinary repertoire from the last 40 years. Songs were interspersed with amusing anecdotes and banter with Dave Bronze the excellent Bass player. Watching guys like Andy and his band is such a pleasure. They have such a wealth of performance experience and are in complete control of everything they do. I particularly enjoyed the solo breaks from Nick Pentelow on Sax and Clarinet and the ensemble was held together by the powerful drumming of Paul Beavis.

The second half was equally as good, culminating in a rendition of the hit song: (If Paradise Was) Half as Nice in which the audience needed no second invitation to participate. From a personal point of view I enjoyed the classic blues numbers most of all but I suspect this is because I’m not as familiar with Andy’s repertoire as many of the audience clearly were. I also would have liked to see the band let rip a bit more, especially in some of the solo breaks but I am nitpicking and the unanimous standing ovation at the end was evidence that Andy and his band had given the audience all they wanted and more. It was a great opening to the Festival. Alastair Elliott

Thoughts from the Secret Gardener

Community News

Putting the garden to bed for the winter is taking longer than usual. No frosts to speak of yet and so the leaves are still on the trees, dahlias are still in bloom and there are still good pickings of autumn raspberries. Some things have been done, though. The garden furniture is cleaned up and put under cover, the greenhouses have been emptied of summer plants and washed down and vegetable beds have been cleared. I have even done some of the winter digging. I will take out the trenches for beans and sweet peas earlier this time and get them filled with good vegetative matter(although I always say that!) What goes around comes around. So, although some things are going to sleep for the winter, other things need to be done in preparation for the new growing season. Seeds and compost have been ordered, making the most of early discounts. Winter Density lettuces have been sown. They tolerate the lower light levels at this time of year and should produce a good crop with limited protection. It will soon be time to plant up shallots in modules and to sow the exhibition onions. Sweet peas wait for no man or woman so let’s think about starting some of those too. Rest?...who needs it!

Friends of Northwood Lane Park

Carry on past the Bowling Club and Rowing Club on Bewdley’s Riverside North and you will find Northwood Lane Park, an open, inviting green space, greatly enjoyed by strollers, picnickers, dog walkers and children throughout the recent glorious summer. It is a park to be proud of.

Friends of Northwood Lane Park is a newly formed group of people who want to work with Wyre Forest District Council to care for and improve this lovely park. We have taken inspiration from the Friends of Broadwaters. Members of this group came to our meeting at Bewdley Bowling Club recently and gave us a very informative talk about what can be achieved by a group of willing volunteers.

If you have any interest, at any level of commitment, then you would be most welcome to join us at the next meeting of the group, which will be held at ‌ The Bewdley Bowling Club, Riverside North, Bewdley at 6.30pm on Wednesday, January 15, 2014. Dave Corbett

With concerted fundraising and voluntary work our group could make a big difference to the park both through general improvements and through meeting the particular needs of the children's areas. There will be no quick fixes to many of the park's present shortcomings; the Broadwaters group has been active for ten years, whilst our group has been in existence for only a few months.

Bewdley Wassail Saturday 11 January 2014

Preparations are well underway for the second Bewdley Wassail, lead by Wytchwood Morris. Some Bewdley residents and visitors will already be familiar with Wytchwood Morris who have entertained us throughout the town at various events this year.

Following the enormous success of last year’s event, children from local schools are again invited to take part in planned workshops and will even perform a special Morris Dance of their own. The workshops will teach the children the basics of Morris Dance, singing and rag-jacket making and will be held in the education room of Bewdley Museum.

Everyone is invited to join the torch lit procession which leaves Gardners Meadow at 3pm before heading along Severnside South towards the bridge and finally stopping at the Community Gardens, where the Wassail will take place. Several Morris ‘sides’ and other dance groups have been invited including the very popular Belly Fusion. Mulled juice and cider from the Bewdley Apple Co-op will be on offer as well as local food produce, woodland craft demonstrations and animals from Wyre Community Land Trust. Henry’s Orchard, vocal harmony group and Bewdley Choral Society will take part in traditional Wassailing songs.

Steve Podger Squire of Wytchwood Morris said ”This is a great opportunity for the people of Bewdley to celebrate an old tradition, and in the process chase away some of those post-Christmas blues!”

Wassailing is an ancient English tradition, usually associated with fruit growing areas such as Worcestershire, Herefordshire and the West Country. Local Morris side Wytchwood will be leading the wassail, and will perform some of their dances. For more information, timings etc please log on to www.bewdley.org.uk, Ellie Hooper

Stay Well This Winter – Bewdley Medical Centre

You will all be aware that every year winter takes its toll of our elderly, whether they are our patients, our friends or our relatives. Surveys have shown that up to 20,000 more elderly people die in England and Wales in winter months than at other times of the year. Again these surveys have shown a strong link between ill health and housing. This is particularly important because many older people spend such a lot of their time at home. So if houses are damp or cold, have inefficient heating and insulation, then these factors can contribute to ill health during the winter months.

Here at Bewdley Medical Centre we work with local organisations and services to help in improving the health for our most vulnerable patients. There are a number of organisations that provide excellent help and assistance to the elderly, especially ‘Age UK’ that offer a range of services including a free and confidential home-visiting service that can identify needs and benefits to suit an individuals’ circumstances. In fact our Patient Participation Group has close links to the Age UK Wyre Forest local office in Kidderminster, which can be contacted on 01562 827788.

We are aware that some patients are perhaps more vulnerable than others and are currently needing medical assistance at home, either by the District Nurses, the Nurse Adviser to the Elderly or cared for by us here at the Medical Centre. However, if you know of someone who might be vulnerable, with the winter fast approaching, then please provide them with the contact information contained in this article. A copy can be obtained from Bewdley Medical Centre or you can contact the Surgery for further advice, where we have a nurse, Sister Kathy Lee, who specialises in care for the elderly. You can also find this information by visiting our website: www.bewdleymedicalcentre.com Contact numbers:

You can have Religious Christmas or Relax and Enjoy Yourself Christmas, but sooner or later it boils down to someone wanting something - Me Christmas. Or should that be iChristmas?

What we want changes over time. I was once over the moon with a Kermit the Frog doll. Limbs that flopped every where, ping pong ball eyes and a huge mouth that was permanently open; you just couldn't shut it. I felt a real connection with that frog.

What we want can be unrealistic. I will never go free running through London or Paris, being one of the clumsiest people alive. I sometimes dream I'm doing it though, and I'm brilliant, so that will have to do.

What we want ultimately, I suppose, is to survive well enough to be comfortable and to enjoy a good portion of this life which consists of so much light and shade. We try to help here; pop down and see what's on offer if you haven't recently; we've still got places available for our January Dressmaking Courses. I hope you get what you want this year.

TOWN COUNCIL NEWS

TOWN COUNCIL MEETING HELD ON 4TH NOVEMBER 2013

Annual Town Council Meeting It was agreed that given the Town and District Council Elections next year are postponed by three weeks so as to coincide with elections to the European Parliament, the Annual Council Meeting when the new Town Mayor is elected should also be deferred for three weeks. The new date will be 30th May.

Policing in Bewdley Following on from a discussion last month with the Police and Crime Commissioner and the Superintendent for North Worcestershire, Councillors were pleased to learn that a regular programme of meetings has been set up to discuss matters of concern relating to crime and anti-social behaviour in the town. They were also pleased to welcome to the meeting Community Support Officer Ben Poppleton who is new to the town. He provided an update as to criminal incidents during the last month in the locality. Public Toilet Provision in Bewdley Councillors had a lengthy debate as to the future of public toilet facilities in Bewdley given the intention of the District Council to stop providing that service as a means of achieving budget savings. There was complete agreement that public toilets were vital for the town. However, the cost to the Town Council taking them over would involve a large percentage increase in the Town Council part of the Council Tax bill. Another option which had found favour in other parts of the country was to introduce a Community Toilet Scheme where in return for an annual payment local hotels/pubs/cafes and other outlets might allow public usage. It was agreed this should be investigated further.

Woodthorpe Drive/Dowles Road Junction Waiting Restrictions The Council responded in favour of a proposal by the County Council to introduce waiting restrictions at this junction and indeed to extend them further than contemplated up to where Woodthorpe Drive splits into two.

First World War Centenary Commemorations It was agreed that a “steering group” should be set up in Bewdley to help to coordinate and promote events relating to the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War. Future Town Council meetings Town Council meetings are held at The Guildhall at 7.30pm on the first Monday of each month unless stated otherwise. The next meetings are: 2nd December, 6th January and 3rd February. Agendas and Minutes of Town Council and Planning Committee Meetings are posted on the Notice Boards outside the Mayor’s Parlour, in the Guildhall Entrance and by the Library Entrance and on the Town Council’s page of www.bewdley.org.uk Minutes are also available at the Library and at the Town Clerk’s Office. I saw three dogs come rushing in, on Christmas Day…. In the morning…

With Christmas fast approaching, we must have a chat about chocolate. Of course there is no doubt that dogs have a sweet tooth - and will thoroughly enjoy a sliver of chocolate if they can get hold of it - however Christmas and Easter pose a hugely increased risk for our barking buddies…

Underneath almost every Christmas tree, some of those presents will be chocolate. Dogs, of course, can smell this through the wrapping paper, and it takes an incredibly well behaved pooch to just ignore all of that deliciousness.

Chocolate is POISONOUS to dogs. The darker the chocolate (more cocoa content) the worse it is. Dogs cannot cope at all well with the products of digestion of the chocolate (theobromine). This can cause diarrhoea, vomiting, depression, seizures and even heart attacks. So please keep them away from the presents. Alongside other items, they should avoid fruit cake, grapes and raisins. These can cause vomiting and diarrhoea, but more seriously, they can lead to kidney failure as soon as 48 hours after ingestion.

If you know of, or suspect ingestion of any toxin, or toy, you must call us as soon as possible. We will make your pet be sick, and advise you on the best course of treatment from there.

Cats are generally sensible. Very rarely do they eat silly foods. Most commonly they will swallow some string, leading to intestinal blockage. Don’t let them play with wrapping ribbon please! Jeremy Hall BVMS MRCVS Severn Edge Vets, Dog Lane, Bewdley.

Bewdley Museum

Community News

The current Exhibition in the Severn Gallery, highlights the work of the Worcestershire Wildlife Trust. Visitors can pick up leaflets about local nature Reserves and Volunteers from the Trust will be popping in at times during December to chat to people about the important work happening all around the county, much of it involving habitat restoration.

During the School half term week, many families took the opportunity to explore the Museum, try Halloween themed crafts and experience ‘A Nightmare at the Museum’ - our first evening event. Visitors tried their hand at creepy games, an ‘unlucky’ dip and spooky trails before listening to ghost stories in the Brass Foundry. Many dressed for the occasion in their scariest outfit and brought along creatively carved pumpkins for the competition. With Christmas looming, you may wish to come along to buy some unique gifts from our craft studios and shop. Keep an eye out for locally produced foodstuff and gift items made on site by our multi-talented resident craftspeople. To coincide with the Christmas Lights Switch-on and Market on 30th November and 1st December, the Museum will be open for longer.

During December, the Museum and Cafe will usually open Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 11am – 3pm. However, due to Events in the town and Museum, on some days there will be extended opening hours. Look out for details about our Pantomime, ‘Beauty and the Beast’ which is taking place on 8th December, tickets are on sale from Friday 29th November. Join us also, for our traditional Father Christmas weekend on 14th and 15th December, when there will be festive fun and live music.

For more information about the Museum including opening times please refer to our website www.wyreforestdc.gov.uk/museum or phone 0845 603 5699.

BDT is an independent local organisation working towards the economic, environmental and social sustainability of Bewdley and the surrounding area. It aims to work with others to support Bewdley as a thriving market town and to promote Bewdley as a good place to live, work and visit.

The Trust has brought over £2m into Bewdley and has a proven record of achievement in delivering a range of projects. As a member of the Wyre Forest Landscape Partnership, BDT has also delivered projects which support Low Carbon Communities, including the promotion of local food and local energy.

The Trust is currently working on developing the town’s portal website www.bewdley.org.uk, enhancing the Local Distinctiveness of the town for residents and visitors, developing community buildings, working towards a sustainable environment, working to support new and existing businesses and developing revenue streams to enable the Trust to be sustainable.

Peter Miller, Managing Director said “We want to broaden the skills and experience base of our board as we move forward. Bewdley Festival Revisited Martin Carthy and Dave Swarbrick – Mercure Hotel, Friday 18th October 8pm

These two veterans of British Folk have a catalogue of performance and recording stretching back over 40 years. So it was with some anticipation that I came to the Mercure for their concert as, I suspect did many of the packed house. Carthy and Swarbrick have really taken this tour back to basics with very simple, down to earth presentation and a sort of “pub fireside” atmosphere to the gig. Whether or not this works in a venue such as the Mercure is debatable and I suspect that they come over much better in a more intimate venue. You can’t fault their playing though – we are talking about true Legends of British Folk who know exactly what they are doing. Carthy’s haunting vocals and open string, simple finger-style guitar playing is almost hypnotic in its consistency and Swarbrick’s fiddling may lack a little of the energy that it once had, but considering the health issues he has suffered, it’s a miracle he can still play at all. I was disappointed though that we only got one really lively Strathspey/Reel combination – when I go to see folk fiddling, this is what I want to hear plenty of to get my feet tapping.

Martin Carthy openly admits he “doesn’t do fun” and this was borne out by a couple of particularly hard hitting songs which clearly left many in the audience feeling a little low, inducing a plea of “give us something cheery” from one heckler. To be fair, Carthy and Swarbrick responded and changed their next song to lift the audience back up. We had a couple more numbers and the evening ended with a slightly more rousing rendition of their popular hit Byker Hill.

I applaud the Festival for bringing these two great Legends to Bewdley, and I’m sure the purists in the room enjoyed every minute, but it was clear from the empty seats at the end that many in the audience found it hard going, and I wonder whether a more intimate venue with a relaxed vibe would have been a more suitable location for these two. Alastair Elliott

A Favourite Footpath by Lynne Fox

Five and a half miles through woods, river and parkland.

Start: NT car park beyond The Holt on the Claverley road opposite the main entrance to Dudmaston (on the A442). With your back to the road, walk down left edge of car park on bridle path to Old Hall. As track bends left, go through gate on right, then turn left to follow fence onto drive and up to lane. Turn right towards Quatt.

At A442 turn left to Quatt Farm Shop. At end of forecourt go through kissing gate and follow footpath and blue and red NT trail posts for approximately 1 ½ miles through fields and over a lane to reach a road. Turn right downhill to Hampton Loade Car Park.

Leave North end of car park through pedestrian gate behind NT information board. Follow the riverside path until you reach large bridge. Go under bridge then diagonally right to gate into woods.

Enter woods, climb for approximately 30 metres then take level track on left. Follow this for about ¾ mile up a steep climb. At junction turn left towards NT info board. Here follow the red markers to head diagonally left and descend to Mill Pool before climbing by Big Pool Dam. Go through first gate then head diagonally left towards kissing gate. Go through and head diagonally left again. On the ridge follow the track right towards Lodge Farm.

At farm turn right and walk up drive towards the A442. Just before road turn right then left to use dog leg in the path. Cross into woods and follow path onto main track. Walking into the wood follow a track to the right descending gently (it will turn left and then right to go down through some large conifers). As track levels off turn right onto a wider grassy track known as the Avenue. After a few yards turn left to join the poolside walk (red markers). After ¾ mile you will come to a gate and a hard stone track. Turn right and follow this up to the Claverley road. A final right turn takes you back to the car park.

D ece mbe r in the Forest As I write we’ve just had our first frosts of the winter.

When I first moved to this area I was impressed by the spectacular hoar frosts which can coat the trees to their tops, sometimes for days at a time. The name hoar comes from an Old English word which alludes to the signs of old age, in this case white hair! The long ice crystals of hoar frost form on cold, clear nights with enough humidity to bring plenty of moisture and no more than a light wind so that the crystals don’t break. Surprisingly, the process can offer a degree of protection to frost-coated plants because the water molecules give up their latent heat when they turn from a liquid to solid state.

As the month progresses, it is worth noting the hollies with the best berries (plenty of choice this year) and the trees with mistletoe. This strange plant is partially parasitic but won’t harm the host tree if it is only present in small amounts. It has long been associated with magic and fertility but has taken its place among Christmas traditions as a “kissing bough” hung above the door. The borders remain a stronghold for the plant, which requires mild, damp weather and a good population of suitable trees such as apple, lime and poplar. It can provide some useful extra income for orchard owners so some introduce it on purpose by squashing the berries on to fruit trees, mimicking the action of a mistle thrush cleaning its beak. Tenbury Wells is the centre of the trade in mistletoe and has wholesale auctions on 3rd and 10th December. 1st December sees an active approach to the coming Christmas season hosted by the Forestry Commission at Callow Hill. There is a 5km Santa Scramble obstacle course through the forest and a 1.5km Elf Trail for younger children to reach Santa’s Grotto, all in aid of the Stroke Association. Call 01527 903501, email westmidsfundraising@stroke.org.uk to get more information or register.

The Forest Friends have their own celebration on Thursday 5th December between 10am and 11.30am. The Under 5s and their carers will be visiting the Discovery Centre (decorated beautifully for Christmas) and listening to a winter story by the camp fire before receiving a baby fir tree. The cost is £3.50 for the first child and £1.50 for each participating sibling.

Health Walks continue every Tuesday and Sunday, meeting at the Visitor Centre at 10.30 for a 11am start. The walks are free, led by trained leaders, and are especially for those who wish to improve their fitness – perhaps after illness. Come and enjoy good company in the fresh air and find your fitness improving. Whatever you’re doing this month, remember that the forest is on your doorstep and offers a place to be inspired and invigorated.
