The Bridge January 2014
A Good Walk by Russ Fauset
Hawkbatch: Grid Reference SO 761 776 Approximate distance 4 miles A good walk to me should be interesting throughout the seasons. This walk, despite being in the popular Hawkbatch wood is relatively quiet. Having parked in the car park, walk back towards the road and turn right at the first path with a barrier. Follow this path northwards towards the forest edge bearing left then right until you reach the forest edge where you turn right. There is a permanent orienteering marker at this junction. Follow the path with the fields to the left, crossing the wide ride with the Elan Valley pipeline, until you come to a bridge (technically called a plank). Cross the bridge and immediately bear right. This path brings you to a forest track where you continue heading north. When you reach the three way junction turn right and go downhill. You will come to a T junction where you turn right following a contouring path with a deep valley to the left and, a little further on, interesting strata of carboniferous siltstone. After a while this path climbs up a muddy section to rejoin the forest track. Go left onto this track and left again at the 5 way junction. Follow this new track (which had pigs foraging on the right when I was last there) going past the view point of the river, Arley and Trimpley reservoirs until you reach another 5 way junction. Turn left again going downhill. As the track swings to the left, continue in that direction recrossing the Elan Valley pipeline. The track is now more like a forest road. Follow it for about 250m and, where a path crosses the forest road, turn right onto a path that can be muddy. Follow this path up hill until you meet a wide track at a T junction. Turn left and follow this track until you almost reach a barrier. Swing right here onto another wide track and take the first path to the left. This path will take you back to the car park.

A new year, a new editor - well, not really a new editor. Quite old, in both meanings of the word. Six months ago I decided to take a break and find someone else to take on the job. It’s always a risk, doing that; they might turn out to be much, much better than you. Which of course is what happened. Gill proved more than equal to the job and the Bridge is in better shape than ever. Well, there you go; it was obvious the rest of the team would only agree to my return if I promised to share the job with Gill. After an arm-wrestling session in Clementines one lunch hour we declared it a draw and are going to do alternate months. You’ll hardly notice the join.
As you will read in the colour section there is one other change in the editorial team: Gary is moving on. We are sorry to see him leave us; as well as being a brilliant photographer he is also very good company and his dry wit in our meetings will be sorely missed. Otherwise it’s all the same old team; sometimes we wonder if people know we do the job because we value the place the magazine has in the town. Or do they think that we earn generous salaries? As to the latter; someone said in one of our meetings,“Let’s give ourselves a 100% increase”. So we did. Now we earn 100 X £0.00. Wow. So now that my wages are in the public domain, I’d better get on and step back into my comfy old editorial shoes and earn my salary. Margaret

Thursday Night is Film Night!
Community News
If all goes to plan, Thursday 23rd January 2014 is going to be a big night for our town. It's when Cinema returns to Bewdley. After two further Thursday screenings in February, from March 6th every Thursday night will be film night and you'll be able to watch a movie on a big-screen, in big-sound in St George's Hall.
By the time you read this you may already have seen announcements regarding the programme. The intention is to bring you recently released films that have been well received but may not have been screened locally. Generally, movies will be screened in Cinema in the Hall weeks before they're available on DVD. There will be the occasional blockbuster and we're also including a 'Mystery Night' when you won't know the film until it starts!
Please look out for Cinema in the Hall publicity or go to the cafĂŠ in the Hall which will have all the information you need. We hope you'll join us in a packed house on January 23rd.

Lost and Found
Community News
Last month, one of our clients brought us a stray cat. This poor little girl had been spotted hanging around in the back garden for a couple of days, and had come down timidly to enthusiastically gulp some food down. Having no idea whose this lovely cat was, her rescuers brought her to our Dog Lane surgery in the hope that we could identify her. To my surprise and delight, we found a microchip had been implanted at some point in her past.
Microchips hold a unique 15 digit number. Once scanned, the number will display on a screen, and we can then match it up with our records. All of these numbers are held on a national and international database for cross referencing, and to ensure that your pet can be re-united with you even if it jumps on the Eurostar.
As if by magic, we had the stray’s name, address, and contact details for her owner. She had travelled over 10 miles from her home address, and had been missing for over a week. Her owners, thinking they had lost her, were over the moon to hear that she had been found safe, if a little battered and bruised. Most likely she had hopped in a car boot, and only been released when the boot was opened at the other end of the journey. Thanks to her rescuers, and importantly her microchip, this lucky young lady could find her way safely home. Without the microchip identification, we would probably never have got her home.
Microchips are very cheap, safe and easy to implant. If your pet does not already have one, please don’t wait any longer. Get it done soon, by a reputable person – so you can be sure your pets details have gone onto the national database (in case they jump on the Eurostar…) Any reader suggestions on topics for this column will be gratefully received. Thoughts from the Secret Gardener
Community News
So, the shortest day has been and gone. That’s good, downhill to Spring! The seed onions need to be sown and looked after. I’ll turn on the heated greenhouse bench and get things going, but light is still an issue, so it’s not a good idea to get most seeds too excited too soon.
We have had some lovely early winter days and the rising sun lighting up the oaks, still with their coppery leaves, has been a real pleasure. Can’t seem to get a decent photograph though.
The winter cherry is in bloom and it made me think of the peach blossom. It might be worth protecting the trees with some fleece to guard against leaf curl. I have invested in a Marjorie Seedling plum. It should fruit after the Victoria and so extend the season towards the end of August. Will next year be as good for fruit as 2013? Who knows, but whatever happens, some things will do well and others will struggle. Such is the garden! I know that it will bring the usual mix of successes and failures and in this respect it is just like sport. If it were predictable, then it would not be worth doing! Bring on the New Year and let’s see what it brings.

For me, it's January and therefore nearly a whole year until there's another Christmas.
For the library, the results of our recent consultation about moving the library into the proposed new medical centre have revealed that 81% of those who responded would approve of the move. We had 177 responses, 93 online and 84 on paper. Just over half of you would be prepared to volunteer in order to support library services in Bewdley, the most popular time being the first half of the week in the mornings.
It was reassuring to find out that by far the most frequent reasons given for using the library were borrowing books and finding out information, so we're getting that bit right.
The results should now be available on the Worcestershire County Council Website (go to Bewdley Library via Library Services and Local Library Details) and there will be a laminated copy of the results on display in the library. Be sure to come and read it! Many thanks to everyone who took the time to respond to the questionnaire. Kay Sanderson
Goodbye Gary After some five years or so, Gary has decided that the time has come to hang up his camera and spend more time with his family. Let’s be quite clear about this; Gary couldn’t stop photographing his beloved Bewdley and its wildlife if he tried, though sensibly he is taking a break from the pressure of producing ten or more photos every month for the Bridge. His family will be thrilled not to be deprived of their dad every month when we hold a meeting or dragged down town so that he can capture a local event. Gary first came to our attention when he sent in an idea for a competition: “Where can you see these chimneys?”. David Glenn, whom we still sorely miss after his untimely death in August 2012 said, “You know, this Gary is really good. Let’s get him on board”. So we asked him if he would join us and thankfully he agreed. He has been enriching the magazine ever since and some of his marvellous cover pictures feature on this month’s cover. As I have mentioned elsewhere, much as I love working on the magazine it is hard work and it is sensible to spread the load. From next month we will be featuring some of Bewdley’s other expert amateur photographer’s work so that Gary can take his well-earned rest. Thank you, Gary, for all your beautiful work for the magazine. We’ll miss you.

Here, and throughout the magazine, are a few of our favourite photos of Gary’s over the years.
The Phantom Knitter
Evidence that the jaunty hat on the postbox hasn't deterred our phantom knitter (or knitters!), these saucy little wintry birds have started appearing round town. I don't know how many there are; I counted twelve as I walked round town. I do hope they are with us for longer than Postman Pat they are bringing a smile to lots of faces.

Parkinsons Event
On the 2nd of December, we held an event dedicated to our patients with Parkinson’s disease giving them an opportunity to learn more about what information and support is available to them locally. It was a very successful afternoon at St George’s Hall with information and talks from Parkinson’s UK, Age UK, Parkinson Disease Specialist Nurse, Kemp hospice, X-pert Patient Programme, Worcestershire Association of Carers, as well as GPs and pharmacists from Bewdley Medical Centre.
Friends of Bewdley Medical Centre
As you are probably aware, we are currently in the process of finding out how the planning application for a new medical centre on Dog Lane has been received by the district and town councils. We have been overwhelmed by the positive response from our patients on our proposed new ‘desperately’ needed medical centre, and we are pleased to advise that a ‘Friends of Bewdley Medical Centre’ Facebook page has been set up by a patient. Please have a look and support our quest for a 21st Century Medical Centre by visiting the Facebook bmcfriends page.

There is a charge of £1.50 per family which goes towards the running costs of Noah’s Ark What do we do? Who Let The Dads Out began at Hoole Baptist Church, Chester in March 2003 and today we are one of 100 registered groups in the UK and overseas. Sadly, Bewdley no longer has a branch of the W.I. However, there is a branch very close, at Callow Hill. Belonging to the WI gives you membership of your local WI with access to all County and National Federation activities and is in addition a great way to get to meet other people.
Community News
Our branch meets at Callow Hill Methodist Church hall, Chapel Lane on the second Tuesday each month at 7.30pm. We’re a cheerful lot, as you can see in the photo, and would love to increase our membership. Some of the things we have done and listened to recently are Heather Flack telling us about Bewdley’s history, people from the Carpet Museum in Kidderminster on the town’s trade, and playing with clay courtesy of the Melting Pot. (My milk jug was a thing of rare beauty.)
Each month interested members meet informally at an agreed venue such as a National Trust property, local garden etc. These visits invariably include a coffee/lunch stop! (That’s why we’re clutching those bags.) If you think you might be interested, new members of any age would be warmly welcomed.

Local Schools Sing History
Last November, four local schools 'made' and sang history on the stage at Kidderminster Town Hall. Pupils from The Knoll School Kidderminster, St Kenelms Romsley, St Anne’s Bewdley and Chaddesley Corbett Primary gathered for the afternoon to perform (after a single rehearsal) the story of the Great Fire of London. 'The Smoke' was written by local music teacher Melanie Gunn as part of the History curriculum. The story is narrated via a conversation between a modern day school child doing homework and Samuel Pepys, eye-witness and diarist extraordinaire! The cast of Londoners, Charles the Second and and modern fire-fighters sing and dance their way through events which began on September 1st 1666. St Anne’s school performed a wonderful dance; Chaddesley Corbett school provided instrumental accompaniment and over a hundred children from four schools who had not previously collaborated had a single run-through before this epic performance, proving how much fun History lessons can be!

TOWN COUNCIL NEWS
Community News
TOWN COUNCIL MEETING HELD ON 2ND DECEMBER 2013
Bewdley Fire Station Having considered the Fire Authority’s report setting out the options for saving costs, Councillors agreed that any proposal to close the fire station at Bewdley should be strongly resisted in view of the delayed response time in bringing a fire engine from either Kidderminster or Stourport or even further afield. Indeed none of the options suggested could be supported as they each reduced the number of fire engines or crew that were readily available. Given the totally unpredictable nature of emergencies this was unacceptable. Local Bus Service Review The County Council was consulting on means of reducing the level of subsidy given to certain (not all) local bus services. Councillors considered a list of those that were “at risk” within Wyre Forest and agreed that any loss of services on the no 15 from Bewdley to Stourport and 291 to Tenbury Wells and 292 to Ludlow should be opposed. Note the 2 and 2A bus services to Kidderminster are not affected by this review. St George’s Hall Having been provided with detailed estimates, the Council agreed to make payment of a grant to St George’s Hall Venue Management of £10,000 towards the cost of stage lighting equipment. This will enable much greater use of the hall by local community groups keen to put on stage shows.
Electoral Review of Wyre Forest After discussion at several briefing meetings, the Council agreed a response to the Boundary Commission on ward boundaries for the District Council now it was proposed to be reduced in size from 42 to 33 Councillors. The conclusion was that Rock should be a single member ward and that Bewdley and Wribbenhall should remain separate wards from one another with two District Councillors each.
Highways Councillors discussed how problems relating to matters for which the County Council as Highway Authority were responsible could be better resolved. It was agreed to convene a meeting in the New Year involving Highway Engineers, County Councillors and the Police to talk through in detail some of the outstanding problems about which Town Councillors were unhappy including High Street and Welch Gate. Women’s World Day of Prayer Friday March 7th 2014 7.30p.m.
The day of prayer begins as dawn breaks over the islands of Tonga, travels across each continent until it ends in the islands of Samoa 36 hours later, circling the world in prayer. In Bewdley the main churches share the honour of hosting this service. Last Year it was St Anne’s. Next year it will be at the Baptist Church. This year it is at Holy Family Catholic Church.
The service is prepared by Christian women from all over the world and is truly ecumenical. It is open to all to share. Men are very welcome but unfortunately rarely join us.
This year it is prepared by the women of Egypt. Rather poignantly it was prepared with great optimism after the Arab Spring but before recent developments in their country. The Christians in Egypt and in other parts of the Middle East and elsewhere are in desperate need of our prayers,
There is a prayer morning in preparation at 11am at Holy Family Church on Thursday 30th of January and preparation evening on 19th February at 7.30pm also at Holy Family. Do join us at one or both of these but especially come on March 7th .

The Friends of Bewdley Museum
We would like to say a huge thank you to all our volunteers for all their hard work in 2013. The support the volunteers provide making clay pipes and ropes, manning the air raid shelter and using their expertise to restore the Tangye engine is hugely appreciated. Others have helped behind the scenes scanning photos and cataloguing artifacts. We look forward to seeing you at the thank you event in January. If you were part of the team in 2013 thank you, if you’d like to join us in 2014 please visit our website www.bewdleymuseum.org.uk to find out more.
January in the Forest
“What are they going to do about the forest?” asked a friend recently. Momentarily puzzled by the open-ended question, I soon got to the nub of the matter. Once again it was the state of the tracks and paths following timber extraction. The Hitterhill area of the forest wasn’t a pretty sight, especially as the work was done when the ground was very soft after a period of rainy weather. Since then some effort has been put into repair and mud removal: things have improved considerably and we can rely on nature to do the rest.
Still, it’s an interesting question, which led me to think about attitudes to the forest and the management planning exercise currently being undertaken by the Wyre Forest Landscape Partnership (son of Grow With Wyre). For most of us, the forest features in our lives as a place of recreation in whatever form appeals to us, from horse riding to sitting with a coffee in our hands while the kids play on the big wooden hedgehog! We know it’s there, we’re glad it’s there and we expect it always to be there.
Elsewhere, discussions are going on about the form of the new body which will hold the publicly-owned forest in trust for the nation. Here in Wyre, our understanding and evaluation of the forest is being translated into a plan that will decide where and how it will be used and protected in the future. As in the past, trees will be felled, my friend will take her dog for walks, and different interests will have to make allowances for each other. What I hope for, this time, is that the beauty and wildlife of Wyre Forest will take centre stage in a comprehensive approach to decision making which will benefit everyone.
Here at Uncllys Farm we are looking at ways of using more of the oak for quality products: beams for construction, countryside and house furniture and flooring, for example. There could be more opportunities for people to be trained in the skills needed and to start small businesses. If so John Ruskin, whose dream for this part of the forest was that it should be “beautiful, peaceful and fruitful”, would be delighted! (And thank you to those who have enquired: yes, we are thoroughly enjoying our new mains electricity!) Happy New Year Linda Iles
