The Bridge March 2014
Behind the Baton
As I mentioned last month, I went to Symphony Hall last Saturday to see an excellent concert by the CBSO featuring the Saint-Saens Organ Symphony. It certainly lived up to my extremely high expectations. The CBSO are a terrific orchestra, not only do they make a magnificent sound, they play with an energy and enthusiasm that you can see and feel. The concert began with a lovely suite by Faure: Pelleas et Melisande, it features the well known Sicilienne, a haunting tune played by the Flute.
To complete the first half, the CBSO were joined by a young Swiss Pianist: Francesco Piemontesi who played Rachmaninov’s Rhapsody on a theme of Paganinni. This very well known theme has been used by various composers as a source of Variations (a set of movements based around the same tune). Andrew and Julian Lloyd-Webber recorded a hybrid rock version featuring Julian Lloyd-Webber’s ‘Cello accompanied by a rock band! The Rachmaninov version is probably the most famous and aside from a succession of exciting and highly virtuosic variations, it has one of the great Romantic tunes of the Piano Concerto repertoire. What is amazing about the tune is that it is simply a mirror image of the original theme. Rachmaninov simply turned the notes upside-down so where they go up in the theme, they go down in the variation. Whether by fluke or through Rachmaninov’s brilliant composition, it’s a wonderful emotion-inducing tune. I often wonder whether Rachmaninov knew it would be that good or whether he stumbled on it by chance thinking, “hmm, I wonder how this will sound if I turn it upside-down?”. Either way, it makes a wonderful climax to the work and left tears streaming down my cheeks. XXX and the CBSO played it perfectly.
The second half began with a solo performance of the Finale to Widor’s 5th Organ Symphony (better known as “Widor’s Toccata”) and of course a wedding favourite. It’s a grand piece and the Symphony Hall Organ certainly did it justice, I could feel my seat rumbling as the mighty 32 foot pipes thundered out the famous pedal tune.
Finally, we had the epic Saint-Saens Organ Symphony, best known in recent times for its use in the film: Babe. Again, the CBSO did not disappoint and at the end of the monstrous finale with the orchestra in full flight and the roar of the organ behind them, there was a spontaneous roar of approval from the audience. Looking around I could see people smiling and visibly excited by the great music they had just heard.
This for me is what makes music great, whatever the genre, be it classical, jazz, pop or anything else. 2000 people all enjoying great music, played by great musicians. For me, it doesn’t get any better than that.

My turn again... I’m hoping our readers are getting the hang of this shared editorial business; our copy editors who also work month and month about haven’t really. (But they’re men.) I’m sure it’ll all sort itself out happily in a few years. Anyway, having nearly dissolved in the previous month’s wet weather I am hoping for a general drying-out of brain, garden, woodwork and town. Just think how in the not-too-distant past us wimmin would have had our houses permanently full of steaming laundry hanging off chairs, door handles and airers, filling the house with a Sunlight soap-scented fog. How they must have hated the short dark wet days of the winter. And how quickly we forget to be thankful for modern heaters and driers. Still, now that March has arrived (and I am mindful of my past record of speaking too soon) we should have snowy sheets blowing in the breeze, daffodils raising their trumpets to sound a fanfare in the sunshine, birds singing their little socks off and a general hooray from nature. So assuming all of you haven’t all dissolved in the February rains, you will see that here on the Bridge team we are eager to improve our readers’ health and wellbeing with articles on walks (four, with the notices from walking groups), talks and entertainment. Add in a chance to tramp the streets delivering the Bridge, and you can see that we have your best interests at heart. Incidentally, if you would like to have a bit of Bridge-induced exercise our delivery organisers will be more than happy to oblige - just send them an email: paul@mann-family.co.uk So with hopes that we’re all basking in endless spring sunshine - Happy Spring! Following a reader’s request, this month’s article centres on mange…
Though you might expect parasitic skin disease to reduce through the winter, we often actually see an increase in cases of fleas, and mange. But what is mange?
There are several different types of mange that we see. Most frequently Sarcoptic mange (commonly known as fox mange). This classically causes skin thickening, itching, hair loss and reddening around the eyes, ears, and armpits, but can show up anywhere on the poor animal.
Take a microscope and look under the surface and you will see fat little critters with sharp spikes on their shell, burrowing through the layers of skin to form warm little tunnels to lay their eggs in. These eggs then hatch and grow, ready to lay their own eggs in as little as 3 weeks. The mites feed on the liquid oozing out of the damaged tissues while they burrow.
Fox mange is highly contagious, incredibly itchy, and can transmit to humans. Normal flea treatments will not kill mange mites, but vets can usually treat it quickly and easily with specialised spot-on solutions. We may recommend routine mange prevention for dogs that spend a lot of time in the woods, or other at-risk areas. Further suggestions for topics for this column are welcome. Please email the editor. Music at All Saints’
One thing that is really encouraging for a Church Choir and Organist is when a Service, which we have worked hard to prepare, is well attended.
It is great to see people coming in through the doors of the Church, to share the music, which may have taken many weeks to learn. Which is why I would like to thank you all so much, especially for your support of the All Saints’ Carol Service on Christmas Eve last year, which was a lovely occasion. Our next Special Music will be at 4.30pm. on Palm Sunday, 13th. April 2014, in preparation for Passiontide and Easter – but do come again before then as well, of course.
If you would like to join either our Adult or Junior Choir, please do contact me through the Church, or on my mobile. We would love to have you with us. New members are always welcome, especially as some of our members have had to retire recently. We are looking for new replacements! New support for The Friends of Bewdley Museum’s WW1 memories.
The Friends of Bewdley Museum are very pleased to be involved with a new organisation, which has been formed in Bewdley to oversee the commemorations of the First World War between 2014 and 2018. The group has representatives from a dozen organisations in the town, including Bewdley Museum, the Town Council, the Royal British Legion and the Civic Society. As well as the “Bewdley Remembers” exhibition in Bewdley Museum, several projects are being planned to commemorate the centenary including, a play set in Bewdley during 1914, a trip to the battlefields, concerts and parades. At the first meeting of the WW1 Steering Group, Penny Griffiths was elected as chairman of as The Friends were already preparing for a “Bewdley Remembers” exhibition this summer. Town Councillors Derek Killingworth and Julian Phillips were elected as Treasurer and Secretary respectively. It is intended that all of the commemorations will have a local emphasis so the group is still appealing for anyone who has any photographs, literature or other potential exhibits of Bewdley during 1914 to please get in touch. Anyone who would like to contribute to the commemorations either by volunteering or providing exhibits are urged to email the secretary of the steering group at julian.phillips@wyreofrestdc.gov.uk. or visit the New Friends of Bewdley Museum website www.bewdleymuseum.org.uk to contact the Friends directly.

“To chit or not to chit: that is the question” Potatoes!
I always used to but haven’t bothered for the last couple of years. Of course, you are never quite sure whether you have done the right thing, so this year I am going to chit one half and leave the others. Chitting seed potatoes involves setting them upright and placing them in a frost-free light place to allow short, fat green shoots to develop. This is supposed to give the seed a head start when planted out. I’m not sure, hence the experiment. I will take care not to knock off these plump shoots when I put them in the ground otherwise there will be no gain at all. If it ever stops raining that is!
Seeds that require a long growing season are sown and up and away. Tomatoes, celery, peppers, aubergines, chillies. Getting them to germinate is one thing, growing them into stocky and sturdy plants is quite another. I will try to find a place which is warm, light but not too hot. I want to get even growth all round the plant and avoid them getting “leggy”. Dear old Geoff Hamilton from Gardeners World recommended using cooking foil as a backdrop to each plant so as to provide even light. It seems to work.
Guide Dog Puppy-Walking
It never ceases to amaze me how many Bewdley folk care about the puppies I walk for Guide Dogs. Thank you, and here is an update on them. Bliss is well known to many of you. She will be six and a half months when you read this article. I was unsure about her name initially; she certainly has lived up to it; sleeping and clean through the night within a few days, healthy, willing, and, apart from suffering from travel sickness, has been no problem at all. Bliss enjoys the company of people, children, other dogs and her own. Toddlers are her favourite and a little boy had quite a shock when having slipped her lead, she pounded up behind him in Jubilee Gardens. Fortunately his grandparents were understanding. Another of my puppies, Lucky, was due to start her training with a potential owner in October. Sadly, whilst out with her trainer, she was attacked by two dogs (who ran across the road at Lucky). Her trainer screamed at them and their owner removed them without apology. Lucky refused to wear her harness for several days and although physically unscathed lost all her confidence. She was withdrawn from training, but I am pleased to say that she is now living with a family with a visually impaired child. As a 'buddy' dog the child will be encouraged to do as much as possible for her with a view to becoming a Guide Dog owner in the future. Now in my sixth year of 'walking' I can not imagine life without a puppy. Please get in touch if you would like more information or go on the Guide Dog website. Gabi Wootton 21

Eve’s Story
My name is Carol and I have been with Mentor Link for a little over four years. I decided to join Mentor Link because I had recently become unemployed and had some spare time on my hands. In September, the beginning of the new academic year, I started with my first mentee. I shall call her Eve. When I first met Eve she looked like what can only be described as a street urchin from a Dickens novel; her hair was greasy and her clothes were creased and had holes in. I knew from the brief I received that she was not a very confident person. One of her teachers had referred her to Mentor Link to help with this. After the introductions were over I asked if she would like to play a game and she agreed. We made each other laugh, and by the end of the session we agreed to see each other the following week at the same time.
As the weeks went on, I learnt more about Eve’s background. She said she was like a carer for her mother and that she didn’t like her step father much, as he blamed her for a lot of things that went wrong in the house.
Both her older sister and her mother had mental health issues, and so Eve being the oldest and the most capable female was expected to look after the house and younger siblings; the youngest had autism. She told me the only time she had to think was when she went to the shop, which she made sure that she went on her own. Eve found doing homework difficult as she shared her room with both sisters. She didn’t have much of a social life, and she felt she was missing out. Slowly over time Eve’s appearance started to change along with her confidence, she seemed to be taking more care of herself. One day she came in armed with a college booklet. She asked me to help her fill it in, it took all our time, she sent it off and gladly accepted a place.
When at the end of her course we happened to bump into each other, I could see this was not the same person I mentored such a short time ago. She was much happier and much more confident. We chatted for a few minutes, and she told me that she had really enjoyed coming to see me.
Since we had last met she had moved out of home and in with her boyfriend, she was just finishing college and had several interviews in the pipeline (one included working in a nursery), and she finished by telling me that without Mentor Link she knew that her life would have been a lot different. This is the reason I joined Mentor Link and long may the charity continue to support young people.

Community News
March is traditionally the month when we look round the house and decide to do some clearing out.

a box of glass objects I inherited
several electric things, but I have no idea what they are
about fifteen huge jigsaws I’m never going to do
a piece of carpet left over from when we had the new dining room (a very common one, this!)
a box of my children’s books - they are in their 40’s now!
piles and piles of car magazines
a whole windowsill I was going to put in

Dowles Churchyard I told you so!
The snowdrops I talked about in my February walk were indeed wonderful this year. They formed a white carpet over much of the churchyard.
Well done to everyone who told me they had struggled through the mud and floods and managed to see them. And if you didn’t - don’t forget to make a note in your 2015 diaries to try again next year. Margaret

In January Nick Tristram Eve spoke on “Things that go bump in the night”. This included witches and ducking stools, markings on old buildings to look out for, and a wealth of fascinating history. He was dressed in costume, in keeping with the historical cooking for which he is well-known. He had a display of some of his unusual ingredients.
On March 25th we have our AGM followed by refreshments and a Beetle Drive.
New members and visitors are always welcome. For further information please phone 01299 401352

The Passion Play For 2014-Inheritance
holds on to this original narrative, but re-examines it in the shadow of the Cross which falls on the lives of men and women alike. It asks its audience to take a dramatic journey into Christ’s Passion. Although the story that Inheritance tells is rooted firmly in biblical times, the themes speak into our lives today: not just eternal themes such as grace and compassion, but specific issues of how we build a Kingdom of Heaven which is radical and inclusive for both men and women. Wherever we stand, the Easter story tells us that nothing is impossible - and that we should expect transformation. The Bewdley Churches present Riding Lights Theatre Company

These Boots Were Made for Walking
Community News
The wet weather can't last forever, even though it feels otherwise. If things do pick up, why not give walking a go? We have a variety of books at the library to get you started. If you like the idea of an adventure on foot but can't face leaving the sofa, you can have a go at one of our foreign travel books, such as 'A Long Walk in the High Hills' by Selina Scott. Remember her?
The moderately adventurous can try one of our books on walks in Shropshire, or how about the Worcestershire Cakes and Ale Trail? TV's Julia Bradbury has also published a book about Canal Walks, which includes Tardebigge to the River Severn, Worcester.
You don't have to take my recommendation, either. One of our seasoned borrowers is also an accomplished walker, and has informed us that our selection of walking books is a useful source of reference and insight for him. He knows what he's talking about, too; he recently completed the Shakespeare's Way (Stratford on Avon to the Globe in Southwark, London) which is no mean feat.
So lace your own mean feet firmly into your boots, fill up your flask with coffee, load your pockets with Kendal mint cake, and we're off. All together now: "And I would walk five hundred miles And I would walk five hundred more‌‌" Kay Sanderson

This is a great opportunity to see original work by Bewdley Artists and the different methods and mediums they are using.

TOWN COUNCIL NEWS
TOWN COUNCIL MEETING HELD ON 3RD FEBRUARY 2014
Town Council Budget
The Town Council set its budget for 2014/15. In comparison with the County and District Councils and the Police and Fire Authorities, the Town Council has a very small budget. Indeed of the overall Council Tax bill for an average “Band D” household of £1503.71 only £23.59 is currently levied by the Town Council. The budget again sees some planned reductions in spending in operating costs, which enables more to be spent on items such as renewing Christmas Lights, maintaining bench seats and making grants to local community organisations. However, with many changes on the horizon as to who is responsible for which service under the “localism” agenda, the Council felt that reserves should be maintained and that it was prudent financially to increase what is charged by a small amount. The Council Tax attributable to the Town Council will therefore rise to £25.71 ie by £2.12 for the year which is equivalent to 4 pence a week per household. Bewdley World War One Centenary Commemorations
A report from the first meeting of the Steering Group (comprising representatives from many organisations in Bewdley including Bewdley School) was presented with positive ideas as to how the town could commemorate this important event. Winter Gritting
Some discussion took place as to how the County Council prioritised winter gritting rounds particularly in and around Crundalls Lane as concerns had been expressed locally. Crime & Anti-Social Behaviour
Councillors heard of increasing anger amongst local traders as to instances of shoplifting from shops over the Christmas/New Year period which was continuing. There had been a meeting that night to discuss what action should be taken at which the Police were present. There had been a suggestion to resurrect the Shop Watch scheme. Councillors were also due to meet shortly with the Police to discuss problems relating to crime and anti-social behaviour in the town. Future Town Council meetings Town Council meetings are held at The Guildhall at 7.30pm on the first Monday of each month unless stated otherwise. The next meetings are: 3rd March, 7th April and Tuesday 6th May. The Annual Town Meeting will be held on Monday 14th April 2014 at 7.00pm. Agendas and Minutes of Town Council and Planning Committee Meetings are posted on the Notice Boards outside the Mayor’s Parlour, in the Guildhall Entrance and by the Library Entrance and on the Town Council’s page of www.bewdley.org.uk Minutes are also available at the Library and at the Town Clerk’s Office. 51

A Favourite Footpath
Stourbridge to Kidderminster
Much more interesting than the road route - a linear walk, using public transport to the start gives a great sense of achievement. A whole day expedition, this 12 mile canal walk follows the Stour Valley descending through 12 locks. Take trains to Stourbridge Town, head into town centre then walk a straight line along High St & Lower High St, c. 1km, enjoying a townscape mercifully enclosed within the horrific ring road. At the end of Lower High St, look for pedestrian underpass - through 1st subway - left - through 2nd - then right up slope to pavement - after 50m left into Canal Street.
Past the Bonded Warehouse marking the end of the town arm, and before long you join the towpath; the next mile will curve round some post-industrial desolation and before long you arrive at Wordsley Junction where turn Left on to the main Stourbridge Canal. [10 minute detour to the right here will take you to Redhouse Glassworks at lock 12 - the Stourbridge and Dudley Canals were all part of the scheme to link coal mines and glassworks with the Severn Navigation via the Staffs & Worcs Canal avoiding expensive Birmingham canals]. The towpath now follows an increasingly rural path and after 2 miles descend down a good flight of 4 locks to Stourton Junction (how many of us have driven along the A449 here without realising what lies below?)
Over bridge 33 and Left along Staffs & Worcs towards Stourport. Within a few yards, note restored Toll house at Stewponey Wharf, down slope past lock and join a long pound continuing to Kinver Lock. Look out for herons as the course continues, contrasting views alternating with narrow valleys; there are mini-tunnels at Dunsley & Cookley and a sandstone cutting before you fall into the pub at Wolverly Lock. A stretch through water meadows and soon after Limekiln Bridge arrive at Sainsbury’s from where your chauffeur can collect you – or walk a little further to Weavers’ Wharf and bus stop. (OS Explorer 219 /218 will add confidence, and the Nicholson Waterways Guide, enlightenment.) James Hickson
March in the Forest
Round about this time of year a small number of people take part in the Wyre Forest frogspawn survey. For me this involves setting off through the forest to find my allocation of 10 ponds, some easy to find, one mysteriously evasive despite my having done this for the past 9 years. When there, I gaze intently into the water at various points, counting clumps of frogspawn. A few clumps are easy to count but in favoured sites I resort to desperate estimates: 200? 500? On a warm day there may be obvious frog activity (“croak”, “plop”) and I will know that I’ll have to repeat the exercise when they’ve finished. They may even stop due to cold weather and start again when it gets warmer. I may look too early (nothing there) or too late (clumps of spawn sinking and starting to merge into each other).
A friend keeps a log of the first day of spawning each year. The dates range from February 24th in 2011 (after the coldest winter in 25 years) to March 12th in 2005. She doesn’t have a date for last year – probably gave up, though it wasn’t too bad a year for frogs or us in the end. The data are collected by the Wyre Forest Study Group, who were recently featured on BBC 1’s “Countryfile”. The survey doesn’t tell us how many of the eggs survive to adult frogs but should indicate trends in population numbers. Forestry Commission events this month:
3rd to 9th March - Climate Week. A family-friendly trail takes you to see how trees and forests can be part of the solution to climate change. The Wyre Forest Discovery Centre is offering a discount for schools to who come on their ‘Trees and Climate Change’ programme that week. Also see www.climateweek.com to see how this nationwide occasion will be encouraging all of us to do our bit, small or large, to help create a secure future.
Sunday 30th March - Forest Discovery Day. This will include a forestry and timber trail accompanied by forest-themed activities for families in and around the Community Discovery Centre at Callow Hill.
The regular Health Walks continue to meet at the Forest Cafe at 10.30am on Tuesdays or Sundays to register before the 11am walk. These walks are led by volunteers and there is no charge. Forest Friends meet at 10am each Thursday for an hour of forest activities for preschool children and their carers. On the first Thursday of the month this is led by the Discovery Centre team and 6th March will see the creation of works of Forest Art (see www.forestry.gov.uk/forestry/infd-6frek4 for the themes for other months), while Forest School practitioners from“Step-Up” will run play-based sessions on the other Thursdays. There is a charge of £3 per child (plus £1 for other participating siblings).
