The Bridge April 2014
A Favourite Footpath
This six mile walk can be started from several points and even in bad weather is only muddy in a few places. You can break it up with refreshments and a toilet stop in the forest, so what’s not to like!
Make your way to the Hop Pole Inn on Cleobury Road and, with the pub on your left, follow Hop Pole Lane round to the right, so you have houses on your right and lovely views over the forest opening up on your left. At the junction with Dry Mill Lane, turn left down the hill to the old railway line on your left. There’s parking if you prefer to start here, or you could pick up the railway line if you’ve walked up from town along the river and Dowles. You’re now following the Wyre Forest Butterfly Trail, so look out for these beautiful creatures in season. There’s the fabulous oak bench too. Continue along this track for 1 1/4 easy miles in all, walking off the tarmac road and straight on under the bridge to a very clear sign for the Wyre Forest Visitors Centre, pointing left. Turn left and continue up this track, with a stream valley on your left, gently climbing into the forest.
At a T junction ignore the sign for visitors centre to the right but turn left onto a wide forest road, going briefly downhill before walking more steeply uphill again, passing a large pond on your right. Continue on this wide track, following the waymarkers for the visitors centre with a right turn through the trees taking you to the buildings.
After suitable refreshment, retrace your steps for about 400m down the wide track where you’ll pick up a sign for the Bewdley Forest of Discovery Walk. Follow the signs on this newly opened walk, along potentially muddy small tracks through the forest, emerging by Uncllys onto a wider track, where you turn right (signposted) joining the tarmac road at the top of Tanners Hill after 800m. Follow the road down and up for 700m, turning right onto Hop Pole Lane to your starting point.
Leaflets for both Wyre Forest walks are available at the TIC.

Welcome to April’s edition of the Bridge. Spring is definitely in the air! Linda Iles has been helping the bats at Uncllys and Elaine Barbour enjoys the butterflies on a forest walk close to town. Meanwhile, Jeremy Hall is concerned about dogs falling down rabbit holes. Find his advice on page 23 and keep sending in your suggestions for topics for Jeremy to cover. April this year brings us Easter, with an Egg Hunt at the Museum on Easter Sunday, the Duck Race on Easter Monday and special services and activities in the town churches. Look out for details throughout the magazine. Cinema is now becoming well established at St. George’s Hall and each month The Bridge hopes to bring you news of the latest offering. See page 31 to find out what films will be showing in April and where to buy tickets. News of this month’s jazz event from Music in the Hall is on page 25. Plans are well in place for two firm fixtures on the town’s calendar. Turn to page 37 to find out how you can become involved with Bewdley Carnival. Help is always welcome to ensure the future of this popular event. April sees the first forays onto the river for crews training for the annual Pub and Club Regatta. Look at the inside back page to find out how you can join in the fun. At this time of First World War commemoration, Barbara Fauset reflects on a trip to the Somme battlefields and shares her photographs in our centre pages, telling us what inspired her. Please get in touch if you would like to be our local photographer of the month. And we couldn’t resist bringing you two readers’ pictures of the river in all its splendour, taken earlier in the year. And so we say goodbye to winter. Happy Easter!

Behind the Baton
I'm writing this column having enjoyed a bumper month of live music. Firstly, the joint concert for the Philippines Disaster Appeal - featuring many amateur singers from Bewdley - was a wonderful evening. It was great to see so many local singers come together and enjoy the many different styles of singing on display. The evening finished with a rousing performance of "You'll Never Walk Alone" with 400 singers belting out the immortal tune. On any occasion, it's a song that stirs the emotions, but with 400 singing harmony it's something else again. Hopefully it will be the first of many joint concerts although it does take a significant amount of effort from willing volunteers and I would like to congratulate Geoffrey Weaver and his team for their efforts which raised over £3000 for the Appeal.
The following Friday, I had a last minute opportunity to see “The Lion King” in London. I’m sure some of you must have seen it when it came to Birmingham, it’s a visual masterpiece with great costume design and choreography. All underpinned by songs from Elton John and a score which of course has a very African feel to it. As always, the band were in the orchestra pit under the stage except for two percussionists who each occupied one of the boxes either side, both of which were filled with the most spectacular array of Bongo drums I have ever seen. I love the energy and atmospheric power of African music – it really paints a picture of the African landscape.
Talking of painting pictures, two days later, I was back at Symphony Hall with an all Beethoven programme including his 6th or “Pastoral” Symphony. If the Lion King took me to the great plains of the Serengeti, Beethoven transported me to a green, peaceful countryside full of rolling fields and babbling brooks. The peace is disturbed by a great storm but as that ends, the music Beethoven uses to depict the clouds parting and the sun re-emerging is like a musical photograph of that very event – you cannot fail to see the blue sky appear as the rain and thunder fade away. The concert also featured the 4th Piano concerto, played with gut wrenching intensity by John Lill, now approaching 70 but still in total command of a piano. That would have been hard to beat but the brilliant Vienna Tonkünstler Orchestra managed to with a rousing performance of the famous 5th Symphony that had me out of my seat at the end.
The next few weeks are a little quieter so next month I will tell you more about the increasing amount of music happening @ The Hall right here in Bewdley.

A Mountain of Friendship
Year 6 pupils from St. Anne’s Primary School and a group of children from Bewdley’s twin town of Fort Mahon Plage enjoyed a day out together on the Malvern Hills. The French party spent a week in March as guests of St. Anne’s School, exploring the area as well as spending time in school finding out what happens in lessons. The French pupils were also able to spend an evening in an English home, having a meal with their new friends. Pupils from Bewdley will be returning to France later in the summer. Bewdley Twinning Association helped set up this link and is very grateful to Headteacher Simon Tapp and the school’s staff - teaching, office and catering – for their hard work in making the trip so successful. The staff accompanying the French children were full of praise for the school.

Thoughts from The Secret Gardener
Community News
March has brought dry weather! The spring bulbs have been absolutely lovely this year, responding favourably to a mild, if soggy, winter. Have you seen all the mini daffodils in and around Bewdley? They work so well with the blues of grape hyacinth and chionodoxa. I’m not sure that the lack of frost will do us gardeners any long-term favours. Fruit likes its dormancy and heavy soils appreciate being broken up by frosts. The seasons should follow in turn and all life responds accordingly. Great to get the ground turned over though; seed beds prepared, onion and shallot sets planted out. The soil is quite warm. Well, it never really got cold this winter. Seed sowing time is well and truly here. I like to sow in modules and plant out more mature plants rather than risk sowing direct. There is more control over conditions and other variables in the greenhouse and cold frame. The grass looks good after a rake and cut, and the mower started first time! I always intend to drain the mower and clean it up, but it never happens, so what a joy when it behaves so well!
Pound the Bounds Sunday 4th May
The annual Pound the Bounds walks, which start from Rock Village Hall and aim to raise much needed funds for the Midlands Air Ambulance Charity, present a fantastic opportunity to take advantage of the many benefits associated with walking.
GP Dr Sarah Tamplin from Bewdley Medical Centre supports the Pound the Bound Walks. “Adults should spend 2.5 hours per week exercising to maintain good health and walking is a great way to achieve this as it is a simple, but extremely effective way to keep fit.”
There is a Pound the Bound walk for people of all ages and abilities. The organisers have devised a 25, 18, 12, 9 and 6 mile walk through the Worcestershire countryside as well as a three mile treasure trail for youngsters.
Dr Tamplin adds: “There are a variety of health benefits associated with walking, from maintaining a healthy weight, reducing blood pressure and increasing levels of good cholesterol, to building muscle strength and improving mental wellbeing. The Pound the Bounds walks present an excellent opportunity to make the most of the great outdoors, as well as raise funds for an extremely good cause, so I’d encourage interested parties to register for this great day out.”
Registration and sponsorship forms can be downloaded from the Pound the Bounds website: www.poundthebounds.org.uk or contact Susan Humphries, who is one of the event organisers via 01299 400304 or suehumphries1@hotmail.co.uk for further information about the event. 21

The Veterinary Column: Cruciate Ligaments
Community News
As spring arrives and the lambs start hopping around the fields, cats start to get out more and dogs are being taken for more walks. A mix of freshly ploughed fields, excitable dogs chasing tennis balls, and new rabbit holes in the set-aside area beside most fields leaves us open to legs getting caught, and severe injuries being sustained… When a full speed dog catches a back leg and twists, the forces travelling through that trapped limb multiply. The lucky ones come away with a little soft tissue bruising similar to a twisted ankle, but the less fortunate ones can tear vital ligaments. Much like humans, dogs and cats have cruciate ligaments that stabilise the knee joint front to back. Due to their anatomy, dogs often suffer ruptures of one of the cruciate ligaments. This destabilises the knee and can lead to more severe internal joint damage. It is incredibly painful, and we often see the poor animals hopping into the surgery. Careful vet assessment and planning and often surgery can lead to good return to form, although the joint will, in time, become arthritic due to the damage. Don’t panic if your dog returns from a walk lame. More often than not, it is just a sprain, or twist.Vets will help to assess the damage and form a plan for their recovery, but it’s always best to get it checked – if only to give them some pain relief. Further suggestions for topics for this column are welcome. Please email the editor. Jeremy Hall BVMS MRCVS Severn Edge Vets

Bridge Delivery Update
Good Friday – 18th April 7.30pm at St Anne’s
Janet and Paul Mann coordinate delivery of the magazine on the town side of the river and want to ensure that all areas have a nominated deliverer. This month they are checking on Cleobury Road, from the bypass roundabout down through Winbrook to Welsh Gate and town. Do you already deliver to part of this road? If not, are you able to deliver to a group of houses? Paul and Janet would love to hear from you so they can update their records and make sure that a magazine reaches every home. Please contact them either through the magazine’s email address on the editor’s page or on 01299 400794. Many thanks. (Thanks from The Bridge editorial team to all our deliverers. It wouldn’t happen without you!)

The Hoar Frost 12th January 9:05am
This was taken early one Sunday morning in January from the river bank close to Gardners Meadow. The hoar frost decorated the fence like a dusting of icing sugar on a cake. Just prior to the shot, the sun started to glow from behind the trees in the distance, illuminating this magnificent view. I chose my spot carefully and quickly set my camera on a tripod. The sun seemed to rise quite quickly making the tranquillity of this scene disappear very quickly, but luckily not before I got my shot. Rob Evans http://www.facebook.com/BewdleyBanter

A Local Photographer: Barbara Fauset The Lochnagar Crater: On 1st July 1916, 17 mines were exploded, thus beginning the battle of the Somme. The largest was the Lochnagar mine, the debris from which rose some 4,000 feet into the air, leaving a crater measuring 300 feet across and 71 feet deep. It is the largest crater ever made by man in anger and is now dedicated to peace, fellowship and reconciliation. It is awesome and beautiful; at the same time terrible and fearful.

What inspired me here was the sight of these white grave stones, row on row, making patterns and shapes when you look at them from different angles. They fill this remote field with their stark whiteness, clean now, after the mud and carnage which the men who lie here had to endure.
‘Discover the Real Ethiopia’
Juliet Clarke has a great love for Ethiopia, the country, its people and customs, and has been travelling there from her home in Bewdley for ten years. During her most recent visit in January this year she joined in celebrations for the Orthodox Christmas and Epiphany. Colin Beard’s photographs give a flavour of the festival of Timkat at Epiphany when Baptism vows are renewed.
More of Colin’s and Juliet’s pictures form part of a slide show entitled ‘Discover the Real Ethiopia’ in St. George’s Hall on 22nd April at 7.30pm. All are welcome to this free event where Juliet wants to share her enthusiasm for this country.
The event also has another purpose. Juliet is involved with several Ethiopian charity projects, including the provision of a water supply, classrooms and equipment for rural schools. She is currently fundraising to buy a photocopier for a new school for 1500 pupils in Mydaero. The school needs lots of support and all donations given on the 22nd April will go directly to fund this worthwhile cause.
Music In The Hall – April 25th 2014
Community News
Music in the Hall is a regular series of Live Music concerts jointly promoted by the Bewdley Youth Festival arm of Bewdley Festival, and St. George’s Hall Venue Management.
Held each month in St George’s Hall, the events feature established bands and artists, generally locally based, and each month musicians drawn from local schools and colleges are given the opportunity to gain experience of live performance. April’s Music in the Hall features an evening of funky jazz from the great local saxophonist John Devereux and his Hot Coq and Boogaloo Jazz Quartet, and soulful music from the Sound of Soul featuring Maxine and Gabriel.
Tickets are just £5.00 in advance from the café in the Hall, and £6 on the night. Tickets for under 18s are £2.50. With a licenced bar and a night-club atmosphere this promises to be a great evening of live music.
Check www.bewdleymusic.com for more details.
Bewdley Library
"A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies, said Jojen. The man who never reads lives only one." George R R Martin, 'A Dance with Dragons'
This year on World Book Night (April 23rd), volunteers will give the gift of reading by distributing copies of selected book titles to lucky community members. To acknowledge this event, we are having a display of library service 'Stock Stars'; books which are highly recommended by our borrowers. Fill in one of the slips available saying why you recommend your read and then place it in the book and put on the display.
We will start this off by recommending favourites of our own. I've always thought you can tell a lot about someone's personality from the books they read, so if you've ever fancied peeking into the psyche of your friendly neighbourhood library staff then now's your chance. This is, of course, entirely at your own risk.
Please don't feel that you have to bring in a highbrow tome that can double up as a footstool. If you enjoy it, put it on there and say why; it's your right as a reader. Someone else may like it too!
Dispensing with 'highbrow', I'll end with a quote from a hero of mine:
“I find television very educating. Every time somebody turns on the set, I go into the other room and read a book." Groucho Marx

Bewdley Museum and Tourist Information Centre
After a quiet opening at the beginning of March, the Museum will be in full swing from 29th March onwards, with opening hours of 10.00am to 4.30pm each day. Due to the wet winter weather, site maintenance had to continue even after opening so many visitors will have seen members of staff with paint brush or screwdriver in hand. One wellknown display item – The Tangye Engine – has now been given a warm, dry space inside so that volunteers and staff can renovate it and hopefully get it up and running again. Moving the engine was definitely a problem solving task, with a crane, hoists and lots of people involved!
The Museum’s Collections Officer, Liz Cowley, now has a claim to fame as she played a starring role in the BBC Midlands Today feature about flooding in Bewdley. Liz was featured showing archive photographs, which were taken in 1947, to the presenter. The report started with some unique Cinefilm footage of the floods in the 1960s, which was taken by the father of local resident Chris Grove. Chris is one of the Museum’s regular Air Raid Warden volunteers who can often be found talking to visitors about our Air Raid Shelter. With Easter just around the corner, parents will be pleased to know that the annual ‘Egg hunt’ will be taking place on Easter Sunday. Also, Craft activities will be offered on weekdays during the holidays. For more details of events and information about the Museum and Craft Studios, please visit www.wyreforestdc.gov.uk/musuem or phone 0845 603 5699. Remember that the Tourist Information Centre is open every day, visit www.wyreforestdc.gov.uk/tourism or phone 0845 607 7819. Tickets for Severn Valley Railway and the West Midlands Safari Park are also available from here.

Our speaker in February was Robert Barber, on the subject “Alternatives to Work in the Carpet Factory”. He gave very good photographic evidence of many alternative industries in the past, including bicycles, cars and many others. He was very much an enthusiast, especially when describing the cars, and was a pleasure to listen to. On 30th April we shall hold our post meal AGM. Ladies are welcome to attend, and are asked to ring 01299 400363 about this or future meetings held at the Mercure Hotel.

TOWN COUNCIL NEWS
TOWN COUNCIL MEETING HELD ON 3RD MARCH 2014
Councillor Mrs Louise Edginton
At a special meeting convened for the purpose (as required by law) the Town Council unanimously agreed that Councillor Mrs Louise Edginton should be given the title of Honorary Freewoman of the town of Bewdley in view of her longstanding service to the community and of her close on forty years of service as a member of either the Town, District or County Councils. This will be the first occasion on which the Honorary Freedom of the Town has been granted since local government reorganisation in 1974. The ceremony itself will take place in late Spring.
Crime & Anti-Social Behaviour
The Council discussed the outcome of a public meeting that had taken place at Shaw Hedge Road Community Centre on 18th February which had attracted a large number of local residents and traders who were angry about criminal activities both on the Queensway Estate and theft from shops in the town centre apparently to fund drug habits. Councillors recognised that the Police and Community Housing were working behind the scenes but still felt much more could be done to apprehend offenders and dealt with through the courts. In that regard the Town Clerk was asked to write to the Justices’ Clerk to question what appeared to have been some very lenient sentences given out by the Magistrates of late.
Library
Councillors were updated as to further options that may need to be considered as to the future funding of the library provided by the County Council who were carrying out a review of the service across Worcestershire. They needed to make cost savings particularly whilst the library remained in its present building. The Town Council were being asked to arrange a public meeting to discuss the future of the library which could include some funding from the Town Council and a call for volunteers. It was agreed that meeting should take place shortly and be well advertised. Future Town Council meetings Town Council meetings are held at The Guildhall at 7.30pm on the first Monday of each month unless stated otherwise. The next meetings are: 7th April and 6th May (Tuesday). The Annual Town Meeting (open to all residents registered on the electoral roll when local issues can be raised and debated informally) will be held on Monday 14th April 2014 at 7.00pm. Agendas and Minutes of Town Council and Planning Committee Meetings are posted on the Notice Boards outside the Mayor’s Parlour, in the Guildhall Entrance and by the Library Entrance and on the Town Council’s page of www.bewdleytowncouncil.org. Minutes are also available at the Library and at the Town Clerk’s Office. 51

Pub and Club Regatta
Register now; training begins this month
At the time of writing, the river is high and it keeps raining; wooden boats languish on racks in the field waiting for better weather in which to be sanded down and varnished. But we are dreaming of the warmer climes and the traditional glorious sunshine that comes with Bewdley’s Pub & Club Regatta.
From Saturday April 26th, visitors to the town will see our brown wooden boats weave their way up and down the river as the beginner rowers learn the skill of competitive rowing. On the day itself, Saturday 31st May, spectators will see them race for real, inevitably in colourful attire or fancy dress.
But don’t just stand there watching it – why not take part yourself? There is nothing to compare with being on the water, side-by-side against your opposition, pushing yourself to the extreme. Words cannot describe the exhilaration of hearing the cheers from the river bank or the elation of crossing the finish-line first, your achievement saluted with three cheers of “hip-hip-hooray!”
So what are you waiting for? Get three friends or colleagues to make up a crew and download the entry forms from www.bewdleyrc.co.uk.
April in the Forest
Last month I wrote about frogspawn and my efforts to help with the annual survey. On a lovely, warm Sunday afternoon in March I had the company of friends, whose four children gleefully helped to count the clumps of spawn. This month it’s the turn of the toads, which are making their way through the woods to their regular spawning sites. The females will produce strings of spawn which the males fertilise immediately.
Two years ago the edges of the little reservoir near Uncllys Farm were black with toad-poles by May, but I think the big fish there took a heavy toll on the numbers. Ponds, left to their own devices, will silt up and fill with vegetation, so one of the winter jobs has been to tackle unwanted plants by pulling out with special long rakes called cromes and by hand. It’s a smelly, muddy but very satisfying job, best done on a warm day.
As the evenings lengthen and warm up, the bats will be out hunting flying insects such as moths and beetles. We put up 50 bat boxes around the farm last month and hope that they will be well used for either daytime resting or breeding. Natural roosting sites include caves, hollow trees and loose bark on trees but, of course, in historic times bats have moved in to houses, churches, barns and the like. Modernisation and a trend towards blocking out wildlife lodgers have reduced these sites, so a little compensation is called for. National records suggest that the numbers of bats are showing some recovery. Our boxes will be monitored monthly just to see how things are going in our corner of the Wyre Forest. We just hope the ever present bluetits don’t move into them!
Meanwhile, take a look in the fields around the forest for the new lambs and calves, whose uninhibited skipping and bouncing brings jollity to the season.
