The Bridge May 2014

Mopping up in full force at Bewdley CC At Bewdley Cricket Club the committee and groundsmen have been working tirelessly since the February flood waters abated in order to get the ground looking as good as ever for the new season.

Following an industrious work force day, the club’s busy fixture schedule began on Saturday 12th April with a home friendly fixture against 1st Division side Belbroughton C.C. 1st XI with the Worcestershire Cricket League fixtures began on Saturday 26th April. From now, the club will be open most weekday evenings and weekends as Lower Park will host a record number of fixtures this season compared to previous years.

The year will continue to see the 1st XI and 2nd XI competing in the Division 2 1st XI and Division 1 2nd XI leagues respectively, with the Sunday side competing in the 2nd XI competition. All Saturday home matches commence at 1:00pm with Sunday matches starting slightly later at 1:30pm. The Cavaliers, the Saturday 3rd XI, continue to play their cricket at Moffats School, Kinlet.

The junior section, of which there are now currently 70 members, continue to train on a Friday evening from 6:00pm to 7:30pm. We are always looking for new members aged 7 upwards to join them. This season we are fielding 6 teams, Under 9s, 10s, 11s, U12s 13s and 14s, all of which play their cricket at our Lower Park ground.

The club’s blue ribbon event for this season sees the return of our Midsummer Bash to be held on Saturday 7th June at Lower Park. Tom the Frop will be performing music from the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s, so there is something there for everyone. Tickets are £10.00 on the night or £8.00 in advance. Just contact anncombes@sky.com or telephone 07870 752 274 to order. Let’s rock the house!!!

Another event for the diary is the annual 6-a-side competition which is being held on Sunday 6th July from 10:00am onwards. This is always a popular event in the Bewdley calendar, so please put a reminder in your diaries and join us for Pimms on the patio. You can check out all the details of the above, plus find a full fixture list within our calendar on www.bewdley.playcricket.com or follow us on Facebook and Twitter (@BewdleyCC).

Finally if you are looking for somewhere to while a way a pleasant evening or weekend or if you are walking along the bank of the River Severn and see us playing, please take a detour and drop in and see what is happening at Bewdley Cricket Club. Everyone is welcome to come down and support the teams over the coming months.

The Bridge is the community voice of Bewdley

It is free and delivered by volunteers to more than 4,600 homes every month Visit us at www.bewdleybridge.org.uk

May is the month when Bewdley really gets underway.

The river flows peacefully on pretending that butter wouldn’t melt in its mouth; the sun shines warmly on the gardens as the straining motors of the lawnmowers whine and chug; the car parks bulge as weekend visitors entertain the gulls with their chips. Grateful shopkeepers hope for better things now the town is busy, and we townspeople stop and chat without the need to wind scarves more firmly round chapped faces. Lest a tone of unrelenting cheerfulness invades my column I will admit that the sun also shines on the less-than sparkling windows and dusty surfaces of my neglected house (“If you don’t trip over it, leave it for another few days”) and insists I mend my ways.

Oh, blow that. There are far more interesting things to do. Films to go and see (p 31),walks to do, bouncing teenage lambs to admire and local teams to go and watch(colour). Those of us no longer in full time employment have plenty to keep us occupied - I wonder if somewhere someone has totted up how much time and money we save the nation by volunteering. I do know that there is no better way to keep decrepitude at bay than by engaging in something that keeps one’s mind and body active. You even get thanked for it sometimes! So if you do some unpaid work around town why not write and tell us of your experiences as a volunteer? We are always happy to hear from our readers - it’s your magazine! Margaret

Behind the Baton

Last month I promised I'd tell you about the plans for more classical music in St George's Hall. The first of a series of concerts leading up to the Festival will be on June 14th when Nos Novem will perform a programme entitled Motets to Motown featuring serious sacred classical music from every century since the 16th. After the interval the mood will relax with upbeat numbers including a few Motown classics. More next month on that.

However, before that, on Saturday May 10th, Bewdley Choral Society will be performing an all Haydn concert at St Anne's Church. The choir will be joined by the Bewdley Baroque Soloists including Charlotte and Sam, the two young singers who enthralled many of you in their concert last year. The first half consists of the lively Te Deum and the fabulous anthem "The Heavens are Telling" from "The Creation". The orchestra will also perform one of his early symphonies - the 10th which has a beautiful, soulful slow movement sandwiched between very jolly 1st and 3rd movements. In the second half, the choir will be performing Haydn's brilliant Missa in Angustiis, or Mass in Troubled Times, more commonly known as The Nelson Mass. I have to admit to being biased here because it's one of my favourite pieces of music. Haydn's composition is so accomplished and he also manages to combine his great sense of fun with some extraordinary deep and powerful interpretations of the words of the Catholic Mass. The opening Kyrie is very dramatic, full of fear and foreboding whereas the Gloria opens in a blaze of optimism. There are some beautiful, lyrical sections such as the opening of the Bendictus before our journey from darkness into light completes with the triumphant Donna Nobis Pacem. As I said, I am biased but I promise you a wonderful evening of very accessible classical music with a great chorus and some brilliant soloists and instrumentalists.

There's so much live music of all kinds happening in our town these days that I just don't have space to write about it all.

Happy listening! Alastair

The Veterinary Column : Old Cats…

Community News

A lot of you may not know, but I have a bit of a soft spot for cats. I do not have the time or lifestyle to give a dog a good life, but my cat Bubbles enjoys a lovely playful cat life.

Bubbles was hand reared from 3 weeks old, having been too poorly to feed well from his mother, but following a few weeks of sleepless nights, his strength improved, and he is now a lovely family pet. I think the early illness has damaged his kidneys, as he drinks rather more than he should, but I have not tested him as he is healthy, and I suppose I am slightly scared of what I might find!

As cats get older we often see them start to lose weight and drink a little more. Of course ageing happens to us all; the body becomes less efficient, and we do lose weight and muscle, but the “oh he’s just getting older” is often a rather dangerous assumption.

Older cats frequently suffer from kidney disease, overactive thyroid glands, and diabetes. Steady weight loss and drinking a little more is often the only pointer we get that something is not quite right under the surface.

Now while vets may not be able to fix these problems, when properly managed we can increase your cats’ quality of life and slow the disease process. A simple examination and blood test will often let us diagnose whether there is a problem, and allow us to provide you with the best course of action in the future to make your beloved friends more comfortable. What a shame that the only proper frost of the winter should take out so much of Bewdley’s lovely magnolia blossoms. Instead of white or pink, we have soggy-looking brown! The first sad sight was in the former Gertrude Jekyll garden on Stourport Road, but then looking more closely, so many more have been taken. However, we are compensated by lovely damson and cherry blossoms. Let’s hope that this heralds a good crop. I think damsons are such an under-rated fruit. Many are hedgerow trees and some of these may date back to the early days of the carpet industry where they were used for dyes. Here in the garden, all those more delicate seeds have been sown. Courgettes, pumpkins, squashes; all have gone into their compost, placed on their sides to reduce the risk of rotting. Of course, they won’t go out into the garden until all risk of frost has gone and the air is calm and warm. The same for the runner beans; sown indoors in nice deep compost and placed where the mice can’t pinch them! That just leaves sweet corn and swedes to do. Too early for them though. They can wait until May. The hellebores are still going well. We are lucky to be so close to one of the major plant-raisers at Ashwood. They can seem a bit pricey but they seed so readily that one plant goes a long way!

A New Service For The Wyre Forest!

In January 2014 a brand new service was launched in four Wyre Forest Medical Centres. This is a joint initiative by Wyre Forest CCG (Clinical Commissioning Group) and Wyre Forest District Council.

The confidential service provides help for Wyre Forest citizens to access information for specialist advice, local activities and support groups. The new service addresses the needs of the person by directing them to other agencies and community activities that can help them with such issues as housing, debt, social care, loneliness and isolation.

The service is run by volunteers or buddies who are trained to be responsive to the evolving holistic needs of the person and committed to building a trusting relationship with them.

If you feel you would benefit from the Health and Wellbeing Service please telephone your local GP surgery and ask the receptionist to make you an appointment. The development worker for this service Katrina Willetts is based at the Wyre Forest Citizens Advice Bureau Tel: 0156260194

The inaugural meeting of Bewdley's new Film Club – FLICs – was held in April with a screening of the highly acclaimed Danish film Jagten (The Hunt). Over forty people attended and were gripped by a thought-provoking film that would not normally be seen on the big-screen outside a city centre.

FLICs is shorthand for Foreign Language, Independent and Classic films and future screenings will be in one of these three categories. The May film (Tuesday 6th May) is the classic 1956 Western The Searchers starring John Wayne. Many movie enthusiasts have it in their all-time-top-ten lists. Future films range from the right up to date Blue is the Warmest Colour (2013) to the original To Kill a Mockingbird (1962).

If you have more than a passing interest in cinema you'll benefit from being a member of FLICs because if you join now you'll be able to see up to eight films for the introductory subscription of £20 (£35 for a couple). To find out more please e-mail filmclub@bewdleycinema.co.uk. We're looking for enthusiasts to help get FLICs off the ground so if you'd like to be involved in any capacity please mention this when you write.

Bella’s Blog : Life In Bewdley Primary School Nursery

Welcome to the very first instalment of Bella’s Blog. Bella’s Blog is all about life in the nursery of Bewdley Primary School that my gorgeous 4 year old daughter Bella attends, looked after by the endlessly patient nursery staff led by Mrs.Vicky Dunn.

One particularly lovely event which took place very recently was the parents’ breakfast. Mums, Dads, Grandparents, Aunties, Uncles, brothers or sisters were invited into the nursery to be given breakfast by their children. Myself, my husband and Bella’s baby brother William joined grown-ups of all shapes and sizes, who were seen lowering themselves down onto tiny chairs, and squeezing their knees under equally tiny tables. Each grown-up intently studied the menu before choosing the breakfast least likely to cause mess on the hands and uniforms of their offspring. Bella returned to our table with a plate of toast for herself, a slice of dry toast for me and absolutely nothing for poor Daddy. Eventually all grown-ups were fed and watered and very well looked after by their dedicated waiting staff – well done kids!! At the time of writing this all the children are keenly looking forward to their Easter break. When they return they will have the fantastic annual Spring Fayre to look forward to which promises to be as fun-filled and action packed as usual. It’s well worth coming along to. There will be stalls galore, games for the children, a bar for the adults, animal rides…the list goes on. Bella and I look forward to filling you in on more tales and excitement from life inside Bewdley Primary School and Nursery.

Bewdley Primary School Spring Fayre 16th May 6pm - 8pm Bewdley Primary School PTFA is pleased to announce the date for the spring fayre to be held in the grounds of the School. Fun and games for pupils, parents, grandparents and relatives, all welcome.

Highlights include stalls, games, tombola, bouncy castle, tuck shop and licensed bar! This year for the first time pony rides will be available.

If you are interested in having a stall at the event, please drop a line to dawniebarb1@yahoo.co.uk for a booking form. Stalls cost £10.

We look forward to seeing you there. Bewdley Primary PTFA 25

Bewdley Chess Tournament

Bewdley Brothers romp home

The Bewdley Chess tournament was a success with 25 competitors and raised just over £154 for Bewdley Community Transport Helpline.

The first Bewdley Chess tournament was held at Wribbenhall parish rooms on Sunday attracting local players from St Anne’s Chess Club and the surrounding areas, also a few players from the Kidderminster Chess Club.

Each player had to play 6 rounds. A number of prizes were donated by local businesses, enabling the organisers to give prizes for 5 separate sections.

The highest scoring players and joint winners of the Bewdley Chess Championship trophy was local brothers James(17) and Joseph(15) Friar scoring 5 1/2 / 6 drawing only with each other in round 5. John Varilone won the runners up prize with 4 1/2 / 6, losing only to Joseph. The prizes for the Nonclub player was won by Gary Mayner from Bewdley and Andy Noble from Kidderminster both scoring 4/6. The junior prize was won by newcomer Sam Coot scoring 2 1/2 / 6 in a strong field.

The event was run to help local Charity; Community Transport Helpline, whose volunteers provide transport and assistance for the elderly and disabled. Mayor Linda Candlin who helped promote the event at the launch purchased the trophy and presented the prizes to the winners.

The first week in April saw the return of school visits, with classes of children daily arriving from Tipton. As part of the Curriculum, children study Rivers, so Bewdley is a perfect place to look at features, flooding and historic trades. Children also need to compare their own town with a contrasting settlement, so much time was spent looking at buildings, location, and of course, wildlife. The swans, ducks and geese were definitely stars of the show.

After a busy Easter, there will be barely time to catch a breath before it’s the Spring Fair on Sunday 4th and Monday 5th May. There will be horticultural themed activities, crafts and music in the Museum, Jubilee Gardens and Community Orchard, to compliment activities around the town. During half term, there will be a range of exciting drop-in craft activities on offer for creative children on weekdays.

There will also be the last chance to view part of the Museum’s collection of etchings by Sir Frank Brangwyn. They will be returned to our Store for safekeeping until the next opportunity for display presents itself. From 17th May, the Friends of the Museum will be showcasing the work of local craftspeople and artists as part of Bewdley Open Studios. On the same day, ‘From the Mountains to the Sea’, a fabulous exhibition of geology inspired work by textile artist Georgia Jacobs, opens in the newly created Sawyard Gallery. On 31st and 1st June, Georgia will be offering demonstrations of her techniques.

For more information please refer to our website www.wyreforestdc.gov.uk/museum or phone 0845 603 5699. Remember that the Tourist Information Centre is open daily, currently from 10am until 4.30pm. Discounted tickets are available for West Midlands Safari Park and Severn Valley Railway.

Counting Birds

Citizens Advice Bureau

I was out in the forest the other day - on Elaine Barbour’s walk from April’s Bridge when I spotted a man with a clipboard and a pair of binoculars. Being perennially nosey I asked what he was doing.

To find out how to get help and advice on a variety of issues, the CAB now holds Community Champion sessions on the 1st Wednesday of the month in Bewdley. They take place at 10am-12 at Open Doors at the Riverside church, Dog Lane.

It turned out that he was by trade a train driver; he drives the shuttle train between Stourbridge Junction and Stourbridge Town. Now, I’m nobody’s fool and knew that that didn’t explain his presence with binoculars in the middle of Wyre Forest. No, indeed; he also does voluntary work for the British Trust for Ornithology and was doing his Spring survey on the bird populations in Wyre. As we talked, he identified for me in rapid succession six bird species by the calls and was able to tell me a bit about each one. It was a tour de force of ornithological expertise and we parted company leaving me a fraction wiser and vastly impressed. Thank you, Steve!

A Community Champion will not give full advice to a client but will be able to give information out from Advice guide which is the Citizen's Advice Bureau's public website. Community Champions can also collect data and if necessary make appointments and referrals. Refreshments will be available. People are free to call in and an appointment is not necessary.

Dear Editor,

I've just been glancing through your magazine and was struck by how much activity goes on in our small town. I'm particularly excited about the new St George's Hall and the potential it has for the whole community.

The Bewdley Cinema has been a great success- I have loved walking into town, having a drink in the bar, seeing a good film and then walking home (cone of chips of course). They have a great selection of films coming up so I wish them every success. The café is also a great asset to the town and easy access has made it so easy to meet friends in wheelchairs or those pushing a buggy. Well done to all concerned. Yours Anne Booth

Bewdley Library : Merry May-king

May is traditionally a month when we’re all supposed to start cheering up as the better weather and the lighter nights take hold. It has been proved that having a good laugh is one of the things we can do to maintain our health, and it doesn’t have to cost a fortune.

Different people laugh at different things, and in the library you will probably find something to suit most tastes. If you’ve enjoyed watching ‘Blandings’ recently on TV, why not try reading PG Wodehouse? If you prefer raunchier stuff, you could try Jilly Cooper. Sometimes fact is funnier than fiction; if you like your laughs based in reality, you could try one of our autobiographies, such as Paul O’Grady, Jo Brand, or Johnny Vegas. Or if you like slapstick you could just follow me around for a few days until I go flying headfirst into or backwards over something, as I inevitably will.

Of course what’s funny depends very much on where you happen to be standing at the time. Whatever your taste, come and have a look; you’ve got nothing to lose and you might gain a smile or two.

Kidderminster NCT - the National Childbirth Trust is here to support parents nationally. Locally, there is a Kidderminster branch that, with the help of volunteers, runs a number of events through the year including groups and nearly new sales. Please see below a list of just some of the activities coming up: Bumps and Babies - Monday 14th April and Monday 12th May at Bewdley Youth Cafe, 10am to 11.30am. This is a new group aimed at mums to be or new mums who are in need of some company, a hot drink and a cheeky biscuit! It's important to get out in those first few months and know you aren't the only one going through something new. So come along to a free social morning. These are held the second Monday of the month. NCT committee meetings - Thursday 22nd May at 8pm, contact Kidderminsternct@hotmail.co.uk for venue. These are held once a month to discuss upcoming events, sales and any other business. It's also an opportunity to meet the team, have a cuppa and see what the NCT is all about. Mums Night Out. TOWN COUNCIL NEWS

TOWN COUNCIL MEETING HELD ON 7th April 2014

Trees in Conservation Areas The Council’s Planning Committee were very concerned to learn of an instance where an attractive magnolia tree had been felled without any permission from the District Council’s Tree Officer. Though the tree in question was not subject to a Tree Preservation Order, no trees of any size growing within the town’s Conservation Area can be felled or interfered with unless permission is granted first of all. The purpose is to maintain the attractiveness of the town centre including the mature gardens and setting in which the historic buildings sit. Councillors were keen to remind householders that they cannot fell such trees with impunity. Indeed there is a risk in some instances of a prosecution being brought. Business Rates The Council agreed to support a national campaign that a given (small) percentage of business rates levied on commercial premises should be paid direct to Town and Parish Councils for them to invest in encouraging local economic growth. Flood Defences Councillors noted correspondence as between the Town Clerk and the Environment Agency following last month’s debate about flood barriers at Wribbenhall. The EA promised to issue a full report as to the future of the Wribbenhall barriers but in the meantime they confirmed that the barriers would continue to be erected in times of flood. The Council agreed to press for an improved system similar to the barriers on the Bewdley side of the river. That would enable the bridge and main road to be kept open. Mayoral Portraits It was agreed that mayoral portraits in the form of photographs of previous Mayors going back to 1974 ie the time of reorganisation of local government, should be obtained and displayed at the Guildhall. Anti-Social Behaviour There was praise for action being taken by the Police and by Community Housing to try to resolve problems with regard to various offenders that had caused anxiety for many people particularly in and around the Queensway Estate. Future Town Council meetings Town Council meetings are held at The Guildhall at 7.30pm on the first Monday of each month unless stated otherwise. The next meetings are: 6th May (Tuesday), 2nd June and 7th July. The Annual Town Council (Mayor Making) will take place on Friday 30th May at 7.00pm in the Guildhall. Agendas and Minutes of Town Council and Planning Committee Meetings are posted on the Notice Boards outside the Mayor’s Parlour, in the Guildhall Entrance and by the Library Entrance and on the Town Council’s page of www.bewdleytowncouncil.org. Minutes are also available at the Library and at the Town Clerk’s Office. 51

Friends of Northwood Lane Park The majority of the Friends would like to see the park’s name changed.

Northwood Lane is not the main access to the park, which is along Riverside North, past the bowling and rowing clubs. It was felt that not many Bewdley residents wouldn’t even recognize the name 'Northwood Lane Park’. Ultimately the town council will have to give permission for a change of name, but several ideas were temporarily thrown into the hat at a recent meeting of the Friends. We came up with Riverside Park, Riverside North Park, Northwood Park, Waterside Park, Baldwin Park, Butt Town Park and Bewdley Park. There are pros and cons to all these names. We need a short, relevant, eye-catching name, and perhaps YOU could come up with it.

If you have any scintillating suggestions for a new name, or wish to vote for one of the above names for this great, child-friendly park here along Riverside North, then please send them ... via email to Jo.lange@wyreforestdc.gov.uk, or phone

Jo on 01562 732501,

or write to Jo Lange, Wyre Forest House, Finepoint, Kidderminster, DY11 7WF.

Please put 'BEWDLEY PARK NAME' as your email subject, and as a reference with any other type of communication. If you would like to become a Friend of the Park, and receive a copy of the agendas and minutes, then please make that request, supplying your email address. Thank you, Dave Corbett Chairman Friends of Northwood Lane Park

Fields and Trees

A Favourite Footpath

Park: Layby on A456 just beyond the turn to Mamble. Walk: 3m. Can be muddy in parts.

Walk to the far end (West) of the layby. On your left is a walkers‘ gate. Go through and walk with the hedge on your right and turn right through the gate at the bottom. Continue in the same direction to a stile into the wood. Cross the stile and walk through the wood to the end, admiring the reflections in the lake. Continue straight ahead of the woodland path across the broad track and two fields to a lane by some cottages. Turn left up the track and be careful here - the lane abruptly turns into a little path on your right while the roadway goes straight ahead to another house. Take the path, not the roadway!

Follow this path through the copse, emerging finally at a stile into a field. Now aim for the far hedge where some 20 yards to the right of the gate is a stile. Cross the thin band of trees to the next stile then go diagonally across the next field to the stile in the corner. Continue along the next 2 fields with the hedge on your right, crossing 2 stiles. At the next field turn left and aim for halfway along the far hedge where there is a stile over a ditch then a path marked across the field to a gate. You are in yet another wood. The path is easy to follow through to a bridge across a little stream. In the next field walk to the far hedge, turn left and keep going through the next 2 gates. Turn left, go through the gate and walk along the farm track back to the layby.

May in the Forest

With each passing day there are new delights as the year progresses now towards summer. May blossom decorates the hedgerows, taking its turn from the blackthorn and damson of last month. The white flowers are tinged with the softest pink and have a heady aroma which passing insects won’t fail to notice. Early May is the usual time for ‘Dawn chorus walks’, where dedicated people leave their beds ridiculously early (sunrise is at 5.30am at the beginning of the month and 4.50am by the end) to be rewarded with the delicate and varied offerings of our songbirds as the grey woods emerge into the dawn.

Many songbird species are in trouble, lacking feeding grounds free of pesticide sprays and nesting sites undisturbed by agriculture or recreational activities (that’s us with our feet, dogs and mountain bikes). The Forestry Commission aims to cater for the public’s recreational and educational needs mainly at the Callow Hill site, and by doing so in one area of the forest to minimise any damage to more sensitive areas. There has been talk recently of attempting to reintroduce, or attract, the nightjar back into the Wyre Forest. Its strange, churring call used to be heard around the heathlands of the forest at night – it is a nocturnal hunter with a wide, whiskered mouth adapted to catching flying insects. Well-managed heaths are reappearing, but the bird also needs to be free from disturbance to its ground level nesting sites. Like the woodcock, it relies on its superb camouflage to evade predators. Wouldn’t it be fine if we could again listen out for this mysterious bird when it arrives from Africa in May?

Regular Health Walks continue to meet at the Forest Cafe at 10.30am on Tuesdays or Sundays to register before the 11am walk. These walks are led by volunteers and there is no charge. Forest Friends meet at 10am each Thursday for an hour of forest activities for pre-school children and their carers. On the first Thursday of the month this is led by the Discovery Centre team and on 1st May they will be inviting participation by ‘Forest Fairies’! (See www.forestry.gov.uk/forestry/infd-6frek4 for the themes for other months). Forest School practitioners from“Step-Up” will run play-based sessions on the other Thursdays. There is a charge of £3 per child (plus £1 for other participating siblings).

Thank you, by the way, to the person who commented on the appearance of the new pond at the Discovery Centre to my fellow-volunteer,Val. Many are the hours we have spent planting aquatic and marginal plants, removing duckweed and minimising the effects of unwelcome inputs from the water treatment system, so it was good to know that someone had noticed! I’m glad to say that the amphibious forest residents have noticed too.
