Chris Thomason - Bewdley Deli
My interest in all things foodie started very young. My mother was a very good cook, but also a nurse. She taught me to cook so that I could be the one to have an evening meal on the table for the family when she was on a late duty.
When I left school I joined the Army as a Royal Marine. All the travel I did meant that I was able to sample a great many different cuisines of the world, particularly the Far Eastern cuisine. We had jungle training in East Malaysia when we were expected to feed ourselves without help. Although rice was easily available our food needed some imaginative help from quite strange ingredients to relieve the boredom of the rice. We soon learned what was good and what was downright dangerous! But my crayďŹ sh with roots and berries was actually pretty wonderful.
After I left the army, I worked on offshore sailing ships. I was working for clients who required only the best in everything, and that included the food. It was a good life but eventually I married and felt the need to settle down on land. My wife came from the West Midlands so we chose to live in Halesowen. I looked for a shop where I could use my expertise in food and local produce and then saw the Deli in Bewdley; it has both local trade and tourists as well as many local producers of excellent foodstuffs, so I settled into Load Street. It’s not a decision I have ever regretted.

July - summer holidays begin - hoorah! Well, hoorah if you’re school-age. I remember that lovely feeling of unlimited possibility the month brings when you’re still under ten years old; it led me to muse on age-appropriate behaviour and what I can no longer get away with doing. Watching an absolutely charming baby entertain the whole church last Sunday I reflected that there are plenty of other things I wish I could do besides going “Ooee” and dribbling. I’d rather like to sit on the kerb and float sticks down the drain when it rains. What about skipping? I used to be red hot at that. Colouring in; give me a packet of Cumberland Coloured Pencils and I could be happy all afternoon. It was the only bit of Geography lessons I was any good at - neatly colouring all round coastlines in blue. I’ve no idea what any of the places were, but by gum, they had lovely borders. Then there’s eating up your dinner so that there’s only the last little toothsome morsel saved to the last. Oh, no, that doesn’t count; I still do that. I suppose it goes in the other direction, too. Do you remember wishing you could stay up really late? Eat as much golden syrup as you could? Talk and have people say, “That’s interesting, Margaret”? Carry around a large bunch of important keys? Wear pretty much what you want? I tried out a few friends on this engaging topic and will write up their answers for the Bridge some time. (There’s another one; I wish I could say “Won’t!” and lie down on the floor and scream when the other Bridge people tell me, “You need to get that stuff written up; we’re past the deadline already”). Oh, look: I filled up all my space and still haven’t told you about July. Never mind; you know where to look to find out what proper grown-up things you can do this month. Or you could give me a bell; I have some little twigs and know this really good kerb…… Margaret News

Community News
As I mentioned last month, there is now so much live music happening in Bewdley that there just isn’t room to tell you about it all. Just in 2 weekends in June we had the Grumpy Old Guitarists @ the Hall – who were by the way, absolutely brilliant – not only excellent guitar playing but great fun and a super repertoire of numbers to enjoy. We also had our Nos Novem concert @ the Hall and of course, the ever expanding HopFest, not to mention the numerous gigs in the Cock and Magpie and other pubs in the town. The good news is that I don’t have to tell you about it all now because there is an excellent new website with loads of music listings for the town: www.bewdleylive.co.uk. If you want to see what’s on, then this is the place to go. There is also so much going on behind the scenes to support young musicians in the town and give them a stage to perform on and give them that much needed exposure to all the other work that’s needed to put on a concert or a gig. It’s great that we have people happy to volunteer and make those opportunities happen – so please support all the groups, young and.. um, not so young in whatever genre you enjoy as we are lucky to have such a great range of live music on our doorstep. The other very exciting music news that will emerge in July is the line up for this year’s Bewdley Festival – released at the launch party on the 18th. All I will say for now is keep the 10th-19th October completely free in your diary and save up your pennies because there is a staggering line up of artists from across the musical spectrum coming to our town. We are talking top international musicians – people at home in the worlds greatest concert halls or huge stadia. It really is very exciting and something we should all be proud of.
Finally – once you have calmed down from that news, you could join us again @ the Hall on 19th July where the wonderful tenor: Wilhelm Theunissen and his accompanist Angie Allard will give a “Song Cycle” recital with some glorious, lyrical music by Schumann and others performed in a relaxed setting. Remember, you’ll be able to read more about this and all the other great music in our town on the Bewdleylive website so add it to your favourites to ensure you don’t miss out on any of this great music.

Bella’s Blog Life In Bewdley Primary School Nursery Well, the school Spring Fayre has been and gone; well done to the PTFA for organising such a fantastic evening. Bella enjoyed helping Mummy on the chocolate tombola stall, and luckily the weather was perfect; the whole evening was a great success. I spent a very happy afternoon helping in the nursery this week. Bella and four of her friends greatly enjoyed weeding and watering the vegetable beds. It’s hard to say at this point whether the vegetables will survive the enthusiastic deluge of water they received! The children whizzed around on bikes, laughed uproariously as they knocked down my towers of bricks and generally had a very enjoyable time. After a very long, hot day the children were more than ready for the weekend.
One evening this week, many extremely anxious parents were invited to the school to find out whose class their child would be in in September. We were very pleased to find out that Bella will be in Mrs. Field’s class. In the next few weeks these children will be spending time getting ready for their move into Reception by getting to know their new teachers and classrooms. I will be going to some of these sessions with Bella to help her settle well. However, I ask myself whether this is actually to help me get through her transition into Reception without becoming a weeping mess. Join me next time to find out how the children are getting on
This year’s Bewdley Book Week, scheduled for September 8th – 14th, has a surprise early Launch Event with music. The biography of musician Mike Sanchez, “Big Town Playboy” written by Mike Madden and with a foreword from Robert Plant, will launch Bewdley Book Week on Wednesday July 2nd at St George’s Hall, Bewdley. The bar opens at 7.30pm, with the event starting at 8.00pm. Tickets priced £7.00 are available from the Hall’s Community Café, Monday to Saturday 10.00am – 5.00pm.
Mike Sanchez will talk about his authorised biography and play some of the songs that have influenced him over his career. There will be a cameo appearance from the author and book-signing.
Bewdley Book Week 2014 will feature an exciting and eclectic mix of authors and poets, some internationally acclaimed, some local talent to be encouraged. For the first time it includes a short story competition amongst local schools and there will be a prize ceremony. Full details will be announced at Bewdley Festival Launch on July 18th. It's a little earlier this year, so the 5 – 12 year olds have plenty of time to read the six books needed to complete the challenge by Saturday 20th September. Along the way they will get incentives and support from library staff and volunteers, and will have the opportunity to attend a medal ceremony at which they will receive their medals and certificates of completion.
We are hoping to run a couple of theme-related events here over the school holiday – look out in the library for details. During the challenge period there will also be related events taking place at Croome Court with appearances by popular children's authors Jeremy Strong and Steve Cole, and local author Roddy Brookes. Details will be handed out as children progress through their books.
The Summer Reading Challenge is free to do and supports children's reading progress throughout the long holiday, so it's definitely worth a go!

The Women’s Section of the British Legion which is a separate organisation to the Royal British Legion provides care and financial support to all those within the Armed Forces community; from servicemen and veterans to military spouses and children. Our flagship schemes include educational bursaries, family welfare breaks and financial grants to those in need.
The 26 members of the Bewdley branch Recently decided that perhaps stalls under the arches and at various events were no longer the best way of raising money. It was decided to organise events which as well as raising money allowed people to have fun. Two events have taken place and the support we received was outstanding, enabling us to raise the incredible amount of £1,247 which will help support the families of current and ex-service personel. Thank you to everyone who helped. The next event will be a Quiz night on 31st October. Watch out for further details.
We are a friendly group who welcome new menbers. Meetings are on the first Wednesday of the month 7.30pm at the Mercure Hotel.

The Government’s ‘Renewable Heat Incentive’ is due to be released in early April this year. This is a very generous subsidy to help people change over from fossil fuels to biomass (wood pellet) fired stoves and boilers for their central heating. The subsidy has been announced as 12.2p per kwh and in most cases will pay for a new boiler within the first three years. Wood pellet as a fuel has many other advantages. It is environmentally friendly, sustainable, clean, dust free, delivered in convenient 10kg bags and is far cheaper than oil or LPG. We, at Wyre Forest Stoves & Fuels, will explain the R.H.I. procedure and even apply for you.You can also view a pellet stove in operation.

Ladies at Chelsea
Community News
Lynne and myself had booked a trip to Chelsea Flower Show on May 22nd. We arrived there about 11.45am and our first impression was of the colours of the displays. We started to look around outside while the weather was sunny; one of the first things we saw was carvings of animals in wood. A large race horse stood there with a jockey sat on top having his picture taken by the cameras. While Lynne was collecting books and plant lists from the different gardens I noticed David Linley sitting on some garden furniture. (He owns a shop just around the corner from the show). It was very hot so off we went again - so much still to see! We had to take up residence in the Ladies Loos while a large thunder storm came then after the storm had passed we went into the Great Pavilion. There were flowers galore. The colours and perfume were stunning; so many wonderful things; Lynne and myself were so blown away by it all. Carol Klein was doing a interview for the camera; the Chelsea Pensioners were there in their uniforms and back outside we looked at more gardens. Finally our day was over and we were back on the coach to Bewdley. What a lovely day we had from start to finish! Now we must get on with our own gardens after all the ideas we have picked up there from all the talented gardeners at Chelsea.

New Face at the Hall
The Directors of SGH Venue Management have announced that John Macaskill has been appointed as St George’s Hall Development Manager.
Director Roger Key said that he was delighted that John was joining the Management Team and was sure that many local people would know him from his time as Manager of the Hotel Mercure.
He added that John’s extensive experience in the hospitality sector and knowledge of the local community and organisations would be invaluable to the Hall’s Directors as they move into the second phase of its redevelopment.
John Macaskill said that he had been very impressed with the progress to date in developing the Hall and looked forward to working with such an enthusiastic and committed Team.
A Local Photographer - Robert Evans
As a passionate photographer, you can often see me around Bewdley with my camera and although I love taking macro and arty type shots, I suppose most of my images are of our beautiful landscape. I’m no different to anyone else when it comes to being around water, so water in one form or another seems to make an appearance in the majority of my work.

Oh, I say!
Bewdley Tennis Club members took part in a fundraising 24 hour tennisathon.
More than 70 members competed in the round the clock tennis match to help serve up the perfect start to the club’s 90th anniversary celebrations.
Members also stepped back in time by wearing clothing from the era including jackets for men and long skirts for women.
The money raised will go towards the Dan Maskell Tennis Trust, which raises funds for people with disabilities and was named in honour of the legendary BBC commentator.
In addition nearly 200 members and guests, including its oldest member, 91 year old Gwen Rosoman, gathered for a commemorative photo at the Stourport Road club as part of a week’s worth of activities to mark the milestone.
It’s all a far cry from 1924 when the club’s first president, Alderman Neil Frost, hit the first serve to mark its opening and there were just two grass courts to play on.
Fast forward to 2014 and the club has seven floodlit courts including three clay courts and has firmly established itself as one of the leading clubs in the county.

Thoughts from the Secret Gardener
Community News
The lawns are growing extremely fast at the moment. For a really good finish, I seem to be cutting twice a week. There is a lot of trefoil in the grass this year. As its name suggests, it is has a leaf with three lobes and a small yellow flower. It has a creeping habit and can cover a large area of the lawn very quickly. It responds well to hand weeding but like any plant, it does not like to constantly have its head cut off! So, I like to give the lawn a rake before mowing so that the trefoil stands up high to be cut.
Slugs! The gardeners’ greatest enemy. They are flourishing in the warm, wet conditions. What shall we do? Some say that we should be out at dusk with a torch and pick the blighters off by hand. Hmm! Time is too precious for that, so avoiding too much build up of debris and trying to get rid of hidey holes is a good start. Sometimes, resorting to bait is the only viable solution. I prefer the organic pellets. I have never tried copper rings or nematodes. A nice idea, but it makes those lettuces cost a fortune. I have a pal who once harvested a cucumber in March. Very impressive until he realised it had cost about £25 to grow!

On Saturday 19th July The Friends of Bewdley Museum will start their exhibition “Bewdley Remembers” with a formal opening to mark the start of Bewdley’s five year commemoration to mark the 100 year anniversary of WW1 2014-2018.
Activities will start outside the Guildhall with the Lutley Community Voices from 10am singing a range of WW1 and modern day songs. The formalities will commence in the museum’s sawyard at 11am where the Mayor of Bewdley will welcome dignitaries and VIPs to the museum. Special guests will include relatives of some of the characters featured in the exhibition – some of whom have travelled across the world to be a part of the event and pay their respects. Formalities will be followed by more music and songs from the period and it is hoped the people of Bewdley and Wyre Forest will join us in marking this momentous point in our history. The exhibition will run from July 18th until September 28th.
The Friends of Bewdley Museum are still very interested to hear from anyone who has memories, artefacts or photographs relating to local interest from WW1 for future exhibitions to take place over the next five years. There will be postcards in the exhibition where details can be left or contact Liz Cowley at Bewdley Museum 0845 6035699.
Any groups or organisations looking to put on an activity to commemorate the period of the war should contact the Bewdley World War Commemoration Committee via the Mayor’s office or email julian.phillips@wyreforestdc.gov.uk. Our Veterinary Column – All about eyes.
Community News
The eye is (like most things in nature) an absolutely stunning piece of engineering. Layers of cells and fluids stacked up on top of one another to form a camera far better than any we could buy in the shops – long lasting, beautiful to look at, and most importantly – self-repairing. Find me a Nikon that can heal its own lens scratches!
Pets’ eyes are no different to our own. Light enters through the cornea, past the iris to control the amount of light going thought the lens for focus, before falling onto the retina where light is turned into a series of nerve impulses for their brain. It’s all very clever, but how do you check your pets’ eyes? Firstly get to an area with good lighting, and get someone to help – it is so very difficult to hold a pet still AND manage to get a thorough look at his or her eyes.
The eye should have a shiny reflective surface – this should be clear and you should be able to see well-defined reflections on the top. It is useful to look for the reflection of the light bulb in the room. Both pupils (black bits in the middle of the eye) should be the same size, and you should not be able to see any obvious cloudy areas, scratches, or craters on the eye surface. There should not normally be any discharge from the corners of the eyes, but like us, a little bit of ‘sleepy dust’ is quite normal.
Call the vet if you notice excessive discharge, squinting, haziness, or scratches. An untreated corneal ulcer can get infected and lead to loss of the whole eyeball. Luckily, with the right support, eyes are normally great at healing themselves given just a little bit of time. Jeremy Hall – Severn Edge Vets.

Time to go....Wild in Wyre!
The issue of children loosing connection with the natural world is increasingly receiving headline attention, most recently through Project Wild Thing and the documentary by David Bond. (If you haven’t already seen it, then I can strongly recommend it as a very thought provoking piece of film making).
As Forestry Commission Learning Rangers, based at Wyre Forest, one of our principal aims is to provide opportunities for children to experience the natural environment. So if you would like your child to have a break this summer from too much screen time indoors, and instead spend three days playing freely outdoors, how about booking them onto ‘Wild in Wyre?’ What better way to reconnect with nature than through imaginative and creative play in your local woods!
So if you don’t want to miss your chance this summer to build your own shelter, make bows and arrows and taste some camp cookery, then book onto the Forestry Commission’s ‘Wild in Wyre’ three day holiday activity for 8-11 year olds. The event is running from Monday 4th until Wednesday 6th August (9am to 3pm) and costs £70 for the three days. Places are limited so book early to avoid disappointment! Tel: 01299 266929 or e-mail learning.west@forestry.gsi.gov.uk For younger children, why not visit the forest and follow the Gruffalo Trail (available until 30th September)?
Hope to see you there! Amanda Dixon Learning Ranger Forestry Commission Wyre Forest Discovery Centre

Here is a pic of Dowles Manor taken sometime in the 70’s.
I was there to repair the TV aerial and took a few slides, sadly the building burnt to the ground a few years later.

The Friends of Bewdley Museum
Community News
The Annual General Meeting of a group like the friends is a necessary part of being a charity, not usually worthy of note. However our meeting in June was the 40th AGM of the Friends of Bewdley Museum. It was lovely to welcome some new faces too. Thank you to you and to everyone who has helped the Friends survive the last 40 years! The number of dedicated volunteers who have ensured we are still here is amazing.
Over 145,000 visitors passed through the Museum Shambles last year, many will have been locals going about their business or revisiting with family, but we know there are visitors from all over the world; it’s a staggering number of people who have experienced the site.
The Museum is facing changes as the council is asked to cut budgets further every year. Volunteers are relied on to open the air raid shelter so the public can visit; they work with the museum assistants to ensure the smooth production of clay pipes and demonstrate the process; ropemaking is an integral part of any visit but is not happening regularly at the moment and we need to build a team of fit volunteers to bring the ropewalk alive. Volunteers help in lots of other ways; please visit our website to find out more. For just £5 a year you can join the Friends to help us ensure they are an active part of our town in another 40 years. www.bewdleymuseum.org.uk. or call Carol on 01299 400386
Kidderminster Horticultural Society Garden Open Day
Digby and Louise Aston at the Cheryls Button Oak (not far from the pub) will be opening their garden on 13th July from 10am until 6pm as part of the Kidderminster Horticultural Society Garden Open Day. All money raised will be donated to our local charities, which this year are Acorns Children's Hospice and the Prostate Cancer Support Group. Last year we raised over £3,000 and are hoping to do even better this year. Digby & Louise have only been at the Cheryls just over 2 years and last year won Bewdley in Bloom best large garden so its well worth a visit. Garden open Day tickets cost £5.00 per person to view all 12 gardens, some gardens including The Cheryls are suitable for wheelchair access. Other gardens are in the Kidderminster area. The tickets will be clearly marked with address, post code and a map of the local area so should be easy to find. There will be an All day BBQ at one of the gardens and home made cakes teas plants etc will be available at some of the others. Strawberries and cream will also be available at Louises' garden. All teas etc will be at reasonable prices. Do come along and enjoy a friendly day out and at the same time help out two very worthwhile charities. Tickets available from John Beard Kidderminster and the Stourport Photo centre. or ring one of the numbers below: Sue Cooke 01562631001or Louise 01299 403539 or 07565109804 49

TOWN COUNCIL NEWS
TOWN COUNCIL MEETING HELD ON 2ND JUNE 2014 New Town Council This was the first regular meeting of the Town Council following the elections held on 22nd May. The political composition of the Council is now: Independent Community & Health Concern 7 Conservatives 5 UKIP 1 The new Mayor is Councillor Derek Killingworth and his Deputy is Councillor Calne Edginton-White. The new Chairman of the Planning Committee is Councillor Roger Coleman. Wyre Forest Electoral Review Councillors considered the recommendations produced by the Boundary Commission for setting up new electoral wards for District Council purposes. This was designed to accommodate the new arrangement that the number of Councillors in Wyre Forest would be reduced from 42 to 33 within 11 wards each having three Members. The Town Council had previously lobbied to retain Bewdley and Arley as a two member ward and Wribbenhall likewise. The Commission were of the view that Bewdley and Rock should form a three member ward and that Wribbenhall should include part of the Lickhill area in Stourport again to make up a three member ward. Councillors agreed this was not logical as the two communities were distinct from one another and hence further strong representations to that effect would be made to the Commission. Likewise the Council agreed that the whole of Arley should remain within Bewdley and not split up as the Commission proposed. Finally the Council objected to the name of the new ward covering Wribbenhall becoming known as “Severn Valley”. Waiting Restrictions at junction of Dowles Road and Woodthorpe Drive The Council looked at revised proposals from the County Council to have double yellow lines put down at this junction to improve safety and visibility. The lines were to be extended further than originally contemplated which the Council supported. Barclays Bank Representations were made by a member of the pubic against the proposed closure of Barclays Bank Bewdley Branch which was planned for mid-August. It was agreed the Council would debate the issue at its next meeting though there was an acknowledgment the Council had little or no power to change what was a commercial decision. Future Town Council meetings Town Council meetings are held at The Guildhall at 7.30pm on the first Monday of each month unless stated otherwise. The next meetings are: 7th July, 4th August and 1st Sept. The Annual Town Council (Mayor Making) will take place on Friday 30th May at 7.00pm in the Guildhall. Agendas and Minutes of Town Council and Planning Committee Meetings are posted on the Notice Boards outside the Mayor’s Parlour, in the Guildhall Entrance and by the Library Entrance and on the Town Council’s page of www.bewdleytowncouncil.org. Minutes are also available at the Library and at the Town Clerk’s Office. TOWN COUNCIL NEWS IS PRODUCED AND PUBLISHED BY BEWDLEY TOWN COUNCIL

Bewdley Historical Research Group
Bewdley Historical Research Group has, for over 30 years, been researching the history of Bewdley, Ribbesford, Wribbenhall and Dowles. Its members have transcribed thousands of pages of documents relating to the buildings and people of the area covering the period from the 16th to 21st centuries. The intention has been to make much of this information available to the public. With this aim the Group have produced 23 publications on a range of subjects and although some of these are no longer in print there are still 17 available either through the Tourist Information Centre in the Museum or direct from the Research Group.
The Group meets from September until the end of May on Monday evenings from 7.30 until 9.30 with members working on topics of their choice where possible. There are vacancies for persons interested in Bewdley and its people to join and carry out research. You don't need a degree, just an interest in history. All ages welcome. Contact by email at bewdleyhistory@btinternet.com or on 01299 403582.
The Research Group also provides a facility within the Museum in the Local History Room for anyone to come and carry out local research with the help of a member of the Group. This facility is available on Wednesday mornings between 9.30 and 12.00 and it is advisable to confirm beforehand that it is open.

A Favourite Footpath
Bliss Gate Just under 4m, hilly Park: Bine Lane in Bliss Gate
This walk, though not far from Bewdley, has wonderful views and the hilly lanes ensure a good workout for the muscles.
From Bine lane walk back to the Heightington Road then turn L at the crossroads. Continue carefully along this lane till you reach a bridge over a stream. Take the footpath on your L. Follow it as it runs parallel to the road to Bullockhurst Farm. Emerge back on to the road then dive back L almost immediately on the other side of the farm buildings. Walk due S across 4 fields, emerging at Conningswick Farm back on to a lane.
This is The Greenway, and is almost traffic-free. The lane goes due E then a sharp bend takes you north, finally coming back on to the Heightington Road and back to Bine Lane. But what views you will have had on the way! In one direction you may be very lucky and see the Malverns. You will certainly see the Abberley Hills and the clock tower. Stripey fields of wheat, pedigree cows and even the occasional human can be spotted.

July in the Forest
By July the summer is really with us. So too are the migrant birds that spend the warm months feeding and breeding here. Last month we noticed that the Spotted Flycatchers were back. I’m not very good at identifying birds, so it’s very helpful when they give extra clues in the form of movement and behaviour: the flycatchers perch on fence posts around the farm and dart off to chase insects, returning to the same post. We need to give these birds some help, as their numbers have been declining since the 1960s. Open grassy areas within and beside native broadleaved woodland are the habitat they need, and it seems that the farm should be ideal because our grazing animals bring dung flies and other insects which provide food. In bad weather the birds can forage for insects among the trees. They leave it very late to breed, but I hope that by now there will be nests, complete with nestlings, in ivy-clad oak trees, in outbuildings or in open-fronted nest boxes. Some pairs may be able to rear second broods before setting off back to southern Africa in the autumn.
We recently came across a very hairy caterpillar (possibly very hungry too) advancing across the doormat. It turned out to be a Drinker moth, the name being earned by the larva’s knack of drinking dew from the rough grasses on which it feeds. You may have seen the long, papery cocoons of the pupae attached to grass stems too. I was interested to read the next day that the Cuckoo is one of the few bird predators that isn’t put off by such hairiness, nor the distastefulness of some caterpillars such as Cinnabar moth and Large White butterfly. The Cuckoo, having largely done its dirty work in the nests of the host birds by now, is more or less silent but will stay around for a month or two longer.
On 3rd July, Forest Friends will be having a Teddy Bear’s Picnic for under 5s and their carers. They will meet at 10am outside the Forest Café at Callow Hill. The cost is £3 per child, and £1 for participating siblings. Bring your teddy and picnic!
If you’re a regular user of the Forestry Commission’s car park you would do well to get a Discovery Pass, which will cost £40 for a year’s parking. Visit www.forestry.gov.uk/pass for more info and to buy. Linda Iles
