The Bridge October 2014

Bewdley Harvest Fair 4th and 5th October

This year’s Harvest Fair will again be a celebration of local produce, traditional arts and crafts, live music and dance. A highlight of the weekend is Saturday morning’s spectacular display of Suffolk Punch horses, parading from Stourport Road through the town before arriving at the Guildhall .

Saturday also sees the popular Bewdley Harvest Soup Trail when participants sample soups on offer between noon and 4.00pm at the town’s pubs and restaurants. 100 Soup forms are available for £4.00 on Saturday 27th September from the Deli in Load Street and Bewdley Farm Shop in Dog Lane with a final 100 forms available for £5.00 on the day. Returned forms will be entered in a prize draw for a family ticket on the Severn Valley Railway. The Museum hosts craft activities, exhibitions, live music in Jubilee Gardens and a children’s Victorian horse fun fair ride.

On both days there will be craft and food stalls on the public space on Severnside South, guided town walks, Shapeshifters Sculpture Group, open studios, street entertainment with the Living Statue and the eclectic Collective 43 – a merry bunch of musicians roaming the streets. On Sunday there will be a day long festival of dance with Wytchwood Morris and a range of visiting dancers at four separate locations around the town as well as the monthly Bewdley Local Produce Market in Load Street.

Free parking is available at The Bewdley School and Sixth Form Centre from 10am – 5pm on both days. Make a note in your diary and come and join in the fun. For more information www.bewdley.org.uk.

Wyre Forest Landscape Partnership has a vision for how the forest might look in 50 years’ time and wants to hear your views. Turn to page 43 for information about the events at their Futuristic Forest Fair at Uncllys Farm, home of Bridge columnist Linda Iles. For the last 26 years, October has brought us Bewdley Festival, but this popular event is now at a turning point and needs new ideas and energy. Read page 11 to find out how you can become involved and help ensure the Festival’s future. On page 19, Alastair Elliott tells us about Bewdley Youth Festival’s exciting competition for the town’s young musicians. And, of course, we bring you news of exhibitions, coffee mornings, lectures, quizzes, concerts, walks, Cinema and Music in the Hall. Who needs sunshine? Enjoy October, whatever the weather.

Bewdley Festival 2015 Organisers Seek New Ideas and Energy.

Community News

After 27 years, long-standing volunteers who put together this successful regional Arts event are to step down. A plea has gone out for fans of music, drama, theatre, comedy, art and literature to come forward with new ideas and energy to help organise and shape Festival into the future and prevent it from fading away. New organisers are required for booking daytime and evening events, art exhibitions, book keeping, marketing, fundraising and making everything run smoothly during this annual event. Existing organisers promise that there is great fun and satisfaction to be had in return for volunteers’ efforts and offer a warm welcome and lots of support to those coming forward. A letter has gone out to all Festival members, but as many of them have aged along with Festival, the net is being spread wider to their friends and relatives. Anyone interested in helping Bewdley Festival survive for another 27 years is invited to phone 01299 404808, email admin@bewdleyfestival.org.uk or call into the Festival Office at St George’s Hall. Meanwhile, Festival 2014 ticket sales underline Festival’s success. Midge Ure’s opening night is sold out, with Courtney Pine and Kiki Dee close behind. Classical Sunday has proven a success as have mountaineer Doug Scott and Joan Bakewell. First daytime event to sell out was Max Keen, other favourites being Judy Cornwell, Chris Mullin and Lesley Smith. Seeking a good laugh in October? Then book for Hal Cruttenden and Jo Enright.

Town Council pledges support to reducing loneliness and isolation in older people in Bewdley and Wribbenhall

For those of us who work in professional or team based employment or who take part in lots of activities, it is hard to imagine a life where a visit from the postman might be the only human contact you have all week. For many older people, it's a grim reality. Loneliness is a devastating problem and has a crippling effect on older people who endure it, day in and day out. This is a reality in our town; what should we be doing about it? The Town Council has formed a working group with four members to undertake initial work: Councillors Linda Candlin, Liz Davies, Philip Edmundson and Anne Mace. Our vision is to enhance the lives of lonely and isolated older people in Bewdley and Wribbenhall by utilising the strong ethos of community we have. To do this we need your help: we aim to act as a facilitator to draw organisations and individuals together to provide additional services. This will be an enormous task as we gather information of the people who are isolated, identify transport needs and find out what is currently available. The response to this project has been very encouraging with organisations and individuals making contact. Our first project will be a joint venture with The Friends of Bewdley Museum and Summerdyne Nursing Home revolving round coffee, companionship and memories. For information or if you would like to help please contact: Philip Edmundson 07709497827 pjedmundson@gmail.com Anne Mace 01299 402204 mace799@btinternet.com

Behind the Baton October is, of course, the highlight of the musical year in

Community News

Bewdley with the Festival taking centre stage. I suspect that most of you have already bought your tickets but if you haven’t, you still have time so don’t miss the chance to enjoy one of the many awesome concerts. It’s going to be an amazing week. Once we’ve recovered from the Festival, we can look forward to yet more great music in St George’s Hall at the end of October. Those of you who came into town during last year’s Harvest weekend in Bewdley may remember a wonderful late summer Sunday afternoon in Jubilee Gardens with the Folk Musician Jennifer Crook and her trio. The good news is that Jenny is back in Bewdley on Tuesday 28th October as the headline act of a Folk Night at St George’s Hall. Jenny is touring following the release of her new album “Carnforth Station”, which she’s produced via the brilliant “Pledge Music” system. Basically, fans of the artist pledge to buy the record (or extras such as signed copies or tickets to the launch) to fund the recording and production up front. This then enables the artist to make the record without having to gamble on sales and those who pledge get updates on how it’s all going and receive their copy of the album when it's finished. It’s a great system and with someone like Jenny Crook who you know will produce a great record, it’s a win/win situation. I have my copy of Carnforth Station and I can confirm it's another classy recording from Jenny and her Trio. Look out for details of the gig and support acts on the BewdleyLive Website. Finally, again in St George’s Hall, the Bewdley Youth Festival have organised a Young Musicians Competition for all young musicians in the Wyre Forest area on the afternoon of Saturday 8th November. It’ll be a great opportunity for Young Musicians from the age of 13-19 to perform in front of a live audience and receive encouragement and feedback from an expert panel of local judges. The competition is open to performers from all genres of music so it’s a great opportunity for everyone in that age group to participate regardless of what your musical tastes might be. More details including how to enter can be found at the Bewdley Youth Festival website (http://www.bewdleyyouthfestival.org.uk/youth-music-competition), so if you’re a Young Musician yourself or a Music Teacher with a talented student, this is the place to go and enter. What a great opportunity for our young people and a potentially very exciting event to add to Bewdley’s Musical Calendar. In the meantime, for those of you going, ENJOY THE FESTIVAL – hopefully I’ll see you there. Alastair Elliott

Thank You For The Music

Thank you to All Saints’ Church for bringing Tenuto to Bewdley! This three tenor group, consisting of David Lewis, Robert Urban-Nagy and Neil Greenway, performed on the 6th September giving us an eclectic set of Opera, the Shows and Classics in the style of vocal group Il Divo. Individually they are superb singers; together the magic of their harmony was breathtaking. For those who were unable to obtain a ticket for this sell out performance and those not fortunate to be there, I am assured that they will be invited back and I cannot recommend them enough. Thank you again. Pam Wilson 21

Bewdley Civic Society celebrates 70 years with a Photographic Exhibition at St George’s Hall 29th September to 19th October

On May 15th 1944, Bewdley Civic Society was founded, with the principal object of safeguarding the interests of the inhabitants of Bewdley, and supported by Earl Baldwin of Bewdley KG, as President. At first glance this date may seem an odd time for such an event. D Day (6th June 1944) hadn’t happened so the war was not yet won. What were our forebears thinking? One can only assume that they thought the tide was turning and once we had won the war it would be a case of “out with the old and in with the new”. How right they were. There was much at stake in terms of Bewdley’s wonderful heritage. And, how successful has the Society been in meeting its prime objective over the last 70 years? Without wishing to sound boastful there is not enough space here to list all the achievements but a few significant ones come to mind: Launching the By-pass campaign resulting, with the help of others, in a successful outcome. Establishing the Conservation Area after successful representations to Worcestershire County Council. Promoting and developing the concept of a Museum for Bewdley. Creating a public garden on the old Wribbenhall Burial Ground. Saving the historic Bailiff’s House from demolition through representation to Worcestershire County Council. Working with WFDC to improve plans for the new Medical Centre, particularly in respect of parking. The Society has also met with failures. In spite of raising a considerable sum of money, the Society was unable, in 1960, to persuade the County Council to retain Telford’s historic Toll House. The Society has been fortunate to have had a long line of dedicated Presidents and Chairmen who have upheld a strong tradition of civic responsibility. Not least has been the contribution of the current President, Kenneth Hobson. Kenneth’s wonderful collection of photographs of Bewdley will be on show at the Exhibition throughout most of October in St George’s Hall. It has also adapted to the times; for instance, currently arrangements are being made for a meeting with a senior official of Tesco to discuss their plans for the Angel Inn. There is also an active programme of lectures, outings and social occasions and a membership of over 500 has made Bewdley the largest Civic Society in the county. New members are always welcome. Please contact Sheelah Bolam on 01299 401188 or email bolam6@btinternet.com or website bewdleycivicsociety.org.uk. Richard Perrin

A-level photography students from The Bewdley School and Sixth Form Centre were given the title GROWTH & EVOLUTION for an assignment that formed part of their overall A-level grade.

The theme challenged the students to look at notions of transition, progress, and change whilst considering themes such as family generations, wisdom, maturity, old age, relationships and birth.

Save the date! 8th November 2014

No, this is not a wedding invitation, but an invitation to you all to support the Traidcraft Christmas Fair, which this year is on Saturday 8th November in its usual venue of St Anne’s Church, from 10am -4pm.

We know so many of you really appreciate this opportunity to see the wide range of Traidcraft goods for real, not just in the catalogue. There is so much to choose from that you’re sure to be able to do lots of your Christmas shopping in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere with no pressure. From Christmas cards and wrap, through delightful wooden toys for the children, jewellery and scarves, to beautifully crafted household items, not forgetting Christmas treats and more every day food and beverages, there’s something for everyone. You can relax over fairly traded refreshments and catch up with friends.

The Christmas fair is my favourite event of the Traidcraft year. It’s very encouraging to see so many folk helping our producer partners from the poorer parts of the world through their purchases – people like Sizwe, a candle maker and pastor from Swaziland, who works for Swazi Candles. He tells us, “I have worked here for 16 years and with the money I have earned I have my own house and I can afford to send my children to school.”

The ladies who do embroidery for Sasha in Kolkata in India began working together in 1977 following devastating floods, which made them refugees. Mother Teresa set up a tailoring school and the ladies passed on their embroidery skills to others. “We started out sitting under a tree and sewing and now we have grown and have a group workshop. We are sisters in the group, we care for one another. Embroidery has helped us to provide a better life for our families and we are grateful.”

The Fair is an opportunity to help hard working people to help themselves through our purchases and to show that there is a fair way to do business, a way that values people and our precious world. Looking forward to seeing you on Saturday, 8th September in St Anne’s. Elaine Barbour 400617 barboursbewdley@btopenworld.com

Bella’s Blog Life In Bewdley Primary School Nursery

We survived!!!! Well, I say ‘we survived’; I actually mean that I did. Bella has started Reception Class and the whole world has not collapsed down around my ears. Bella sailed in on her first morning with her usual indifference. She said, “You can go now, Mummy, I’m going to play with the Playdoh!” So off I went for a damn good cry in the car before very damply driving home with William to an extremely quiet house. Most parents looked completely horrified when on day two we were not allowed to accompany our children into the classroom but had to say goodbye in the playground. This proved just too much for a certain Mrs. F who cried her eyes out all morning. Mrs. Field and Mrs. Maiden have coped admirably with a barrage of questions and concerns from emotional parents, and the children all seem to be settling down well in the second week. Book bags have been issued, the shine has been scuffed off new shoes and cardigans have been lost… ahh the joys of school! During the summer holidays Bella, William and their cousin Erin enjoyed a lovely family holiday to Cornwall. Despite the weather being less than perfect, we had a fantastic time. Aunty Kathryn falling over in the sea fully clothed was perhaps the highlight!! I am looking forward to seeing what our little ones get up to in their new life as the weeks pass.

Thoughts from the Secret Gardener

Is summer really over? There is a lovely soft light and benign sunshine at this time of the year which gets us used to the idea that the seasons are changing. My favourite times of the years are spring and autumn, so I am in my element! Some gardeners have suggested that autumn has come two or even three weeks earlier this year. Perhaps they are right because damsons and apples certainly seem to be ripe earlier than usual. Well, in the garden it is harvest time and the crops are coming into the kitchen thick and fast. Beans of all kinds, root vegetables and salad crops are hitting our plates. Hmm, yum yum! The late summer flowers are still good, helped by the dry weather which has prevented the blooms from being spoiled. Chrysanthemums have got to be one of the best flowers for the vase, but somehow, I always forget to be rigorous with the disbudding and so end up with lots of small flowers and short stems. However, in the excitement of getting the tomatoes, peppers and aubergines it is important to remember next year and I really must get spring bulbs ordered. The catalogues were delivered a long time ago and somehow got to the bottom of the pile so that is a job which just cannot wait any longer. It’s good to be busy! 35

Beware the Toxic Flea treatments… Further to the flea epidemic I wrote about last month, I now come bearing a warning. Flea treatments are no longer only available to purchase from Vets; now there are ever stronger ingredients available over the counter from pharmacies and shops. These products, if used correctly, are perfectly safe, BUT there is a hidden danger. Many flea products available to buy off the shelf for dogs contain an active ingredient called Permethrin. This is toxic to fleas, but safe when used at the right dose on dogs. Permethrin is, however, toxic to cats. Exposure to toxic doses can lead to tremors, twitches, blindness and even seizures. In the worst cases, the poor animal may even die. Needless to say – it is very important to make sure you don’t apply a dogs’ flea product to your cat, but close contact and mutual grooming can also lead to your cat being exposed to the permethrin that you applied to the dog. TOWN COUNCIL NEWS

TOWN COUNCIL MEETING HELD ON 1st September 2014 Police and Crime Commissioner’s Annual Survey

Councillors agreed to the submission of their views as contained in a survey being carried out by the Police and Crime Commissioner for West Mercia. The Council had been critical of the Police in last year’s survey. There was agreement that violent crime and anti-social behaviour still represented a very big problem in Bewdley along with speeding traffic and that more should be done to increase the visibility of the Police generally in the town particularly late at night in the town centre. The Council are due to meet with the Police and Crime Commissioner later in October for an exchange of views.

Car Parking in Bewdley

With the prospect of work beginning soon on the construction of the new medical centre in the Dog Lane car park, Councillors debated the urgent need for alternative parking to be provided before part of the present car park was cordoned off and work began. Earlier in the year when planning consent had been given by the District Council, it had been agreed in principle that the District Council would extend the car park northwards close to the river in advance of any building works taking place. Failure for that to happen would cause added congestion for motorists and it was feared many visitors on whom Bewdley depended for trade may take their custom elsewhere. The Town Council will press for action to be taken quickly. Neighbourhood Watch

There was a call for the local Neighbourhood Watch coordinators to be provided with more information by the Police on incidents that were happening locally and for them to be invited to regular meetings of the Council to give up-to-date reports. Town Council Meetings

It was noted that new government regulations permitted Council meetings to be filmed or recorded by members of the public sitting in the public gallery. Previously this had been banned but with modern technology and with the government being keen to promote “openness” in local government, it was accepted this change had to be accommodated. Future Town Council Meetings Town Council meetings are held at The Guildhall at 7.30pm on the first Monday of each month unless stated otherwise. The next meetings are: 6th October, 5th November and 1st December. Agendas of Town Council, Planning and Finance Committee Meetings are posted on the Notice Boards outside the Mayor’s Parlour, in the Guildhall Foyer and by the Library Entrance and on the Town Council’s page of www.bewdleytowncouncil.org Minutes of those meetings are also available at the Library, on the website and at the Town Clerk’s Office. TV Burp

Community News

As the nights get colder and darker the old favourites are back on TV; 'The Great British Bake Off' and 'Who Do You Think You Are?' being particularly popular. I'm not keen on either of these but there's no denying the impact they have on the nation; there's a report on the latest 'Bake Off' goings-on every week in the papers and it shows every indication of becoming 'Big Brother With Soggy Bottoms'.

If these programmes inspire you, why not have a look at our extensive cookery section? We've got books by Mary Berry, Paul Hollywood and previous winners of the Bake Off as well as old favourites Nigella, Jamie Oliver and The Hairy Bikers (you could always work off those delicious dishes by cha-cha-ing along with 'Strictly').

If you're more of a 'Strictly' fan, you can read up on the lives of Craig Revel Horwood and Len Goodman, or see how many ex-contestants you can find in our TV and Theatre/ Sports/Biographies sections. If you're more interested in your own family's story, there are also some books on genealogy which will help with researching your family's past.

So there should be something for everyone!

Museum and TIC

Two new exhibitions are featured throughout October. In the Wyre Forest Gallery, the work of artist Keith Noble will be on display as part of the Bewdley Festival. This year’s Bewdley Civic Society school heritage project culminates with an exhibition in the Sawyard Gallery about the life of Stanley Baldwin, MP for Bewdley and Prime Minister. The display has been created in partnership with students and staff from the Bewdley School and Sixth Form Centre as part of the Bewdley Youth Festival.

With the start of the new academic term, schools have continued to book the ever-popular wartime themed visits, so you may see a stream of little evacuees marching to Severn Valley Railway’s station. However, with a new emphasis within the Curriculum towards early or local history, don’t be surprised to see more Celts, Romans and Anglo Saxons invading the town!

The fourth Bewdley Harvest Fair will take place on the weekend of 4th and 5th October. In partnership with Bewdley Development Trust, the event offers many exciting features and activities throughout the town. Within the Museum and Gardens, there will be children’s craft activities, live music and stalls. Details of the event are available from the Tourist Information Centre.

On Saturday 1st November, the Museum is planning to run a Christmas Gift textiles workshop led by the inspirational Georgia Jacobs. Anyone interested will soon be able to pick up a leaflet in TIC. For more information about exhibitions, group visits, events or our half-term holiday drop-in craft activities, please phone 0845 603 5699. Remember that the Tourist Information Centre is open daily from 10am until 4.30pm. Discounted tickets are available for West Midlands Safari Park and Severn Valley Railway. 53

A New WI for Bewdley

‘Some people want it to happen, some wish it would happen, others make it happen.’

I found this little homily on a board at the foot of the staircase in St George’s Hall, Bewdley, last Monday night as I left a meeting of some 68 women who had gathered to find out more about the WI. It struck me then how very apt that was. The room full of women I had just left were very much in the latter category ’others make it happen’. They wanted to find out more about what the WI stood for, what they could expect from their membership, and what they could offer in return.

As a reward for attending this meeting, they were treated to a splendid cookery demonstration which included florentines, tiramisu, a fantastic vegetable and cheese pie with filo pastry crust, a strawberry, mint and pistachio flan and that old favourite sticky toffee pudding. What a feast! It certainly earned its title of ‘Naughty but nice’.

One of the WI advisers who organised this meeting, Pauline Briggs, expressed her delight with the support, “What a night! 54 potential members left their details”. Patience Broad who led the team as Chairman of the Advisers said “Wow – what an evening. I think we had our own mini Avon meeting”. (A reference to the several hundred who turned up to a Bristol WI meeting last year).

The next meeting to begin the process of creating this WI will be on Monday 13 October at St George’s Hall, Load Street, DY12 2EQ at 7.30pm.

Come and enjoy a craft dabble session ready for Christmas and make some friends over a cake and a cuppa. What’s not to like? For more information please contact fiona@wfwi.org.uk or telephone 01905 641658’

October in the Forest

Squirrels are cute, aren’t they?

That’s a question that will divide opinions depending on location and the background of the responder. Around here, the image of a grey squirrel will spring to mind, since they had successfully established themselves and replaced the reds by the 1930s. They are attractive animals: agile, playful and bold to the point of cheek. Put peanuts out for the birds around here and a squirrel will do its utmost to have them, stealing the whole feeder if possible. Here lies the problem. They are opportunists and have added hazelnuts, apples, plums, the bark, buds and shoots of trees to their menu, even eating eggs and nestlings on occasions when plant food is scarce. This has a dramatic effect on the woodland food web: bad news not just for the red squirrels but also for woodland birds and the woodlands themselves.

We recently visited a Herefordshire woodland belonging to the Duchy of Cornwall and saw a well-managed mixture of oak, cherry, rowan, hazel, walnut, sweet chestnut and other trees, but also heard about the struggle to grow good timber trees where deer and squirrels can do so much damage. It was pointed out that the fine specimens we could see there and elsewhere in England had been established before the real explosion in grey squirrel numbers (30 to 40 years ago) and that, unless something is done about their numbers, we won’t be seeing them again. Trees may be killed by bark stripping or, even if they survive, will carry the marks of the damage in their timber, making it useless as anything but firewood. The reality is that the value of the end product is what ensures the survival of our forests, whatever petitions we sign.

On a rather different note, you are invited to a talk on Wednesday 9th October at 7.30pm in the Ruskin Studio, Uncllys Farm, DY12 2LR. Sara Atwood, an American academic who is leading the development of John Ruskin’s Guild of St George in the States, will be talking about Ruskin and the environment, in particular, her efforts to live out some of Ruskin's ideals in her teaching and work at her own and son's school gardens. The evening will be informal and not at all stuffy! Ring 01299 403691 for more information.
