The Bridge March 2015

March in the Forest

I’m busy putting the final touches for an orchard plan at St George’s Farm – land given to the Guild of St George in 1871, cleared of forest then planted with its first orchard in 1880.

The original planting list reveals some interesting differences between culinary habits then and now. The apples, cherries, pears and plums, which were chosen to feed the populations of Bewdley and Birmingham included many cooking varieties, for instance the May Duke cherry and both Yellow and Purple Pershore plums. I wonder what the demand will be for bottled fruit, jams and pies in the decades to come? It’s anybody’s guess. So I’m faced, even these days, with a bewildering choice of varieties old and new, all with different attributes.

With apples, should I go for eating, cooking, juicing or cider-making, or rather, in what proportion? (Will perry ride the same wave of popularity as cider?) When I select apples for resistance to canker, a disease which has been a problem in the new trees at Uncllys Farm, should I prioritise that over good juicing, or keeping quality? Shouldn’t I also keep in mind the need to avoid scab and mildew, and choose late-flowering varieties to escape early frosts? It’s all very complicated and to avoid an eternity of indecision I may well go for those which I just like the sound of. We already have Pitmaston Pineapple and D’Arcy Spice, but perhaps I can sneak in some Pig’s Nose Pippin or Slack Ma Girdle!

If I make poor decisions and the new orchard fails to deliver in terms of saleable fruit, at least there will be plenty of locals happy to make use of the crop. At harvest time the human munchers, juicers and cider-makers will be joined by an army of birds, foxes, deer, wasps, hornets etc. and even at other times of the year the trees will be hosting nectar-loving insects, beetles, bats and woodpeckers.

On a different subject, I must convey a little request from Butterfly Conservation. Surveyors are needed to help assess the health of the forest’s butterfly populations. You don’t need to be a specialist but you need to be able to commit time every other week to walking a set transect, recording butterflies as you go. It should only take about an hour, and as it’s alongside Dowles Brook, who knows what else you might see? Please contact Mike Williams at mike@stagborough.fsnet.co.uk if you think this may be for you.

Here’s an impressive first - an editorial inspired by a sermon! The sermon, about the dangers of judging people by their appearance made me think about how we can easily forget that many of the people we meet not only may be very different persons from our stereotyped first guess; we can also find out that the perfectly ordinary person we were talking to yesterday has a fascinating back story. That person clutching a morning newspaper in the shop on a Saturday used to be responsible for checking all the motorway bridges in Worcestershire; the anxious lady checking her shopping in the Coop was a senior nurse in Borneo for many years. I’ve chatted to a man who walked twenty miles every day to check sheep in the Scottish highlands, and a man living down the road who taught prisoners to read and write; I bumped into an ex-Severn-Trent man who could top up Birmingham’s water supply at the touch of a button. Unfortunately it’s often hard to find out what the quiet unassuming person does - or did - during their life. Mind you, short of buttonholing complete strangers in the street and demanding to know, there is often no way of finding out. But here’s a thought; I’m sure you can think of people you have met who have surprised you with what they have to tell. Here at the Bridge we try to ferret out some of these stories in our “Getting to Know You” slot, but wouldn’t it be interesting to hear about other tales from Bewdley lives? I’m congenitally nosey; do write in and tell me (usual email address at the bottom of this page).

Of course, most people don’t proclaim their fame to all and sundry, and their lives remain hidden to all but their closest friends. Yes, I know you are all wondering about the astounding successes by which my illustrious life has been marked. Let’s just say, you’ll have seen my exhibition at the Tate Gallery? The paper I wrote on Quantum Mechanics last year? That Booker Prize novel in the eighties? The ground-breaking expose on Channel Four a few years ago? You haven’t? Can’t think why. Margaret

Bewdley Library - Bark at the Moon

Community News

Did you know that the full moon on March 5th this year is referred to as the Worm Moon in the Native American tradition? This is because the full moon occurring at this time coincides with trails made by worms being visible for the first time in the thawing ground. Christian settlers referred to the same moon as the Lenten Moon.

Spring brings changes and we all respond in different ways. Perhaps you're like a flower, and gently unfold to what life has to offer; or a spring lamb, bounding around joyfully and discovering new things for yourself; or even a mad march hare, bolting wild eyed from one experience to another without seeming to know what's going on.

The good thing about the library service is that it's there for everyone and all types; we have fiction books, films, non-fiction books to inform, courses on offer (our nail art course is coming up on the 13th March) and free computer access. So you can take control of your own experience and development as gently or as enthusiastically as you like. It's never too late to change and grow. So give it a go!

It is much more intense for the children now; the settling in period is definitely over and the emphasis is very much on work. Bella and three other children have been given the opportunity to be in a ‘more able’ group where they are taken out of their class once a week and do extra work with another teacher. Bella has taken this change in her stride, as she does with most things. Needless to say I am a very proud Mummy. We were asked to take a milk bottle into school a couple of weeks ago, so the children can make an ‘Elmer’ elephant. We have yet to see the results, I just hope I washed the bottle out enough otherwise we’re going to be receiving a very smelly elephant. There has been talk of a teddy bears picnic, and I have also seen parents taking the tubes from the middle of toilet rolls in, so there are plenty of exciting projects coming up. Half term is nearly upon us but the children seem to be still full of enthusiasm and not particularly in need of a holiday. Not that I am complaining - but it all seems very calm. Maybe it’s the lull before a storm; watch this space…..

The Elgar Chorale of Worcester

is making a first appearance under its new Director of Music, Piers Maxim, with a Concert of Baroque Masterpieces at

St Anne’s church Bewdley on Saturday 7th March starting at 7.30pm.

The concert will feature works by Handel, Purcell and Bach, including his Jesu Meine Freude, which will form the second half. Piers, who has an international reputation for music of this period, will also play organ works by Bach.

The Chorale will be accompanied by a small ensemble of period instruments, and soloists will be drawn from the choir. Proceeds will go to Save the Children. Tickets are available from St Anne’s Church or from 01299 405476.

Beautiful Prayer and Greetings cards

Did you know that beautiful prayer and greetings cards are on sale in St Anne’s Church near the coffee bar? Produced by Tim Tiley, the Mothers’ Union and Traidcraft, the range is wide and affordable.

There are also a few ‘old stock’ prayer cards in the Lady Chapel to which you are very welcome to help yourself.

Why not come and browse over a cup of coffee: Tuesday to Saturday, 10.00am - 2.00pm? 23

Behind the Baton

January saw the inaugural “Bewdley Young Musician” competition held at St George’s Hall and organised by Bewdley Youth Festival. The evening was well supported by competitors and their families and there was a superbly supportive atmosphere in the hall to help our young performers combat their nerves. Prizes (donated by the Helen Mackaness Trust) were available for: Best Instrumentalist, Best Solo Singer and Best Singer/Songwriter. There was an award for Best Original Composition and the Helen Mackaness award for Young Musician of the Year. As Chair of the Judging panel, I was very lucky to be able to call on the expertise of three talented and knowledgeable musicians; the singer Claire Worboys, the pianist Angie Allard and oboist and teacher Fiona Hudson. I’m glad I did because choosing winners was a difficult task. It was great to see thirteen nervous but enthusiastic performers take the stage and give their best. It was Maddie Abbots-Cosier’s beautiful jazz singing that caught our ear, Elisha Green’s brilliantly constructed song, and Alex Hill’s faultless and flowing piano performance that impressed us most. Alex also won the prize for Original composition with his wonderfully fluid and sophisticated composition “River”. Finally came the award for Young Musician of the year. This proved a very difficult decision, because our category winners were all contenders but we had also been wowed by a very different performance from 13yr old Hannah Law. Hannah sang the haunting folk song “Wayfaring Stranger”. Not only was it inventive but very courageous and moving to listen to. It made her a worthy winner of the Helen Mackaness award. Overall, it was a wonderful evening. Congratulations should go to all the young musicians who performed. Plans are already afoot to make the competition bigger and better next year. Congratulations should also go to Peter Barnett from the Bewdley Youth Festival who put a great deal of work into organising and running the event. I can’t wait for next year. Alastair

Jobs We Didn’t Know About

Those of us who enjoy walking along the old railway line at the end of Dry Mill Lane will know that the area alongside it has to be kept clear of trees and bushes. You probably haven’t noticed the power lines along the track.

Western Power were out at 8.00am one cold February morning to cut the power so that the Forestry people could work safely. Dean, Nick and Chris get ready to start.

Thoughts from the Secret Gardener

There are days when the sun actually feels warm. Lovely, but help! All those winter jobs that haven’t been finished yet. I must cut back the dead stems which were kept on over winter to protect plants from the cold and to retain a bit of height in the border; stems on the peonies, Japanese anemones and nepeta. There’s a final chance to prune apples and to shape hedges. Soon, the sap will rise and the birds will be nest-building and it will be too late. Meanwhile, I have moved bags of compost indoors to warm up. Seeds hate cold compost and it was good to hear the radio experts confirm my suspicions. Seed compost is best for sowing. Multi-purpose contains too much nutrient and germination is not so good as a consequence. Packets of seed do not come cheaply, so it would be a costly mistake to scrimp on the compost only to fail on the germination. So, feeling smug, I can get on with sowing those seeds, in trays, indoors and in time for the spring when it comes! They will need gentle warmth, a little moisture and a lot of good, clear light to produce those lovely stocky plants with sturdy stems and leaf joints not too far apart. 26

The Bewdley Passion 2015 – 3 Plays in 3 Days

2013 saw the first Bewdley Passion Play performed on Good Friday. Shutting down the town centre and turning it into a theatre was ambitious but hundreds of people came to see a drama that witnessed to the power of the Good Friday story.

It was a great piece of community theatre with local people singing, acting and producing the play.

The final crucifixion scene was stunning - a hush descended on the crowds watching – spine tingling !

As the figure of Jesus was taken down from the cross and the actors left the stage I heard someone say ‘Is that it ?’

It made me think – did they not know about Easter Day ?

Well, maybe they didn’t know – maybe they felt the story was unfinished – and there is more to it. And so this Easter the Bewdley Passion is a three day event with three different plays:

Thursday 2nd April Jesus betrayed and arrested – why would anyone wish Jesus harm? The answer is laid bare in a short play in Jubilee Gardens beginning 7pm.

Good Friday 3rd April, Jesus on trial for his life. This performance begins near the Bridge in Load Street, starting 2.30pm

Saturday 4th April a new musical production unfolds what happened after Jesus was buried – the discovery of an empty grave, Jesus raised and desperate followers re-energised. Jubilee Gardens, starting 7pm, lasting about 1 hour.

All productions are open to the public with free entry. Come dressed for the weather (sun cream or jumpers !) and bring a cushion or seat if you wish, to Jubilee Gardens

Note there will be a road closure in place on Good Friday 3rd April in Load Street from 1.15pm - 4.15pm

Bewdley's Ash Trees

Community News

There is increasing concern that Britain's ash trees could go the same way as our elm trees as a result of the spread of the ash die-back disease (Chalara). As tree wardens, Gren Jones and I have been asked to keep our eyes open for any signs of this disease locally. To do this we need to know where the ash trees of Bewdley are.

We know that there are many residents of Bewdley who share our interest in trees and their welfare and we now ask them, through the pages of The Bridge, if they will assist us in our task by letting us know where the ash trees are. Once we know where to look we can plot their location and visit them on a regular basis instead of wasting time in fruitless searching.

Please help us by reporting the location of any ash tree known to you. The location, described as accurately as you can, should be sent in an email to: townclerk@bewdley.org.uk who will pass all the messages on to us. If you would like to help but would prefer not to use email, arrangements have been made for boxes for written messages to be placed in Bewdley Library, the Tourist Information Centre and in the cafe at St. George's Hall.

As spring approaches, the trees will soon be unfurling their leaves and the distinctive leaf of the ash, together with its black buds makes identification relatively easy. If you are still uncertain, there are books available which aid in tree recognition and there is always the internet. Google ' Ash trees' and many sites appear. I found www.forestry.gov.uk and www.woodlands.co.uk very useful but there are several others that you might like to try. Don't worry if the tree you report turns out not to be an ash. We can weed out any errors when we do our check. It is better to get a false report than to miss a genuine ash.

We do not need you only to identify those trees that seem to be affected by Chalara. There are several other problems that afflict ash trees which have similar symptoms so it is better to leave final identification to the experts who we are in contact with. If you find something that looks like a Chalara-afflicted tree please do not cut off a sample as this could inadvertently spread the disease. At the time of writing there is nothing to suggest that Chalara is present in the immediate vicinity of Bewdley. What we would like you to do is tell us where any ash tree is. We can then keep an eye on them and report any future problems to the experts. Please help us to protect Bewdley's ash trees and Bewdley's treescape Cliff Willmot Bewdley Town Tree Warden

The Newly formed BEWDLEY WI welcomes new members.

We meet the First Monday of each month at 7.30 in St George’s Hall.

Visitors pay £3. Members pay £36 per year and enjoy the many benefits it brings. Do come along: we are sure you will make new friends, enjoy the great speakers, demonstrations and have fun!! 39

Our Veterinary Column: A Farewell from Jeremy

Community News

Following 18 months of writing about everything from eyes to worms for the Bewdley Bridge magazine, my time has come to move on.

I have loved becoming part of the community in this form, and while I will remain resident in Bewdley, I will shortly be moving jobs to Worcester.

May I take this opportunity to thank you all for reading my column, thank the editorial team for agreeing to publish my articles, and may I wish you and your pets every health and happiness in the future. I will leave you all with a quick reference guide for the most common of complaints – tummy upsets.

If your pooch starts vomiting – keep offering water, but starve them for 24 hours. If they continue to vomit and can’t keep water down, then they will soon dehydrate – so you need to take them to a vet as soon as possible. If they will keep water down – great. Reintroduce bland food (eg chicken and rice) in small amounts, little and often, and if things continue to improve, back onto their normal diet slowly after a few days. If they vomit as soon as you re-offer food, they need to be seen by a vet.

Similarly, diarrhea can be treated in the same way. Starve for 24 hours, followed by a bland diet. Water as required. The chicken provides easy protein, and rice provides energy and some starch to help bind everything back up again. If diarrhea persists for more than 24 hours, it is worth seeking veterinary advice. Needless to say if there is any trace of blood in either vomit or diarrhea, they need seeing urgently, and if your dog is allergic to chicken… don’t feed them chicken please! Also – if they are off colour, or down in the dumps, then please get them checked.

As usual, if in doubt, please don’t hesitate to ring your local vet for advice.

Thank you all again, and I hope to see you around town soon. Jeremy Hall BVMS MRCVS. Severn Edge Vets

Wyre Forest Alzheimer's Society

I have volunteered with the Alzheimer’s Society locally for a few years now. I find it enjoyable, fun and very worthwhile; I help at the Kidderminster-based monthly cafe, the twice monthly Singing For The Brain and at other educational and support groups. If you are curious about why brains need singing to, or what goes on at the monthly cafe, why not think about volunteering? Like many organisations, the Alzheimer’s society really needs helpers to come and get involved.

I can chat with anyone who is interested, or the local office at Ombersley can also help (01905 621887). Googling 'Alzheimer's Society' will give a lot of information.

Alzheimer's Society really is a good organization to belong to, and you will be doing something really useful. Janet Mann (phone 01299 400794) 41

The Friends of Bewdley Museum volunteers have been helping behind the scenes through the closed season, cataloging and cleaning. The Museum re opens on 1st March, and as ever we welcome active members and volunteers who would like to support all the activities on the site.

Brass rubbing, claypipe making, ropemaking and the air raid shelter rely on volunteer support to bring these unique features of our museum to life.

On Saturday 14th March 11am – 12.30pm we are having a coffee morning in the Guildhall. Please come along to keep in touch or to have a chat about ways in which you may be able to get involved. There will be cake! Volunteering is an opportunity to celebrate the heritage of Bewdley and meet the visitors who come from near and far, and are fascinated to learn more about our beautiful town.

Community Champions

Citizen's Advice Community Champions are at the Riverside Church Dog Lane Bewdley (next to fruit and veg shop) every Wednesday 10-12 noon at the Open Doors coffee morning. We can help with a variety of issues which include debt, employment, benefits, housing, consumer queries and much more. We are able to give out information, signpost, refer and make appointments. No appointment necessary and refreshments available. It is now 6 months since the Town Council pledged support to reducing loneliness and isolation in Older People in Bewdley and Wribbenhall.

We have held meetings and talked to people in Bewdley about what is needed. One thing we identified was that, whilst there are a number of impressive initiatives going on there doesn’t appear to be a list of what is available. We are working on producing this.

Another need was for more opportunities for people to socialize and relax in an accessible and comfortable venue. Our first project around sharing Memories was launched in December at Summerdyne Nursing Home in partnership with the Friends of Bewdley Museum. This was a great success; sadly the room wasn’t large enough and we had a waiting list. So the second session was moved to Wribbenhall Parish room.

Our second project in partnership with Reaching Out has now been launched with sessions on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday in every month from 2.00pm - 4pm in Wribbenhall Parish Room, Kidderminster Road.

There is no need to book. Just come and join us and have an afternoon of companionship in a comfortable newly refurbished venue. Including Tea and Cake and various activities. A Walk in the Forest at the Visitor Centre, Callow Hill.

Many may ask, “Why go walking in winter in England?”. But I would answer, why not? This walk took place on Tuesday January 13th.

My walk lasted just longer than one hour, during which there were grey skies, then a few flakes of the white stuff, followed by a little drizzle turning to rain.

In January there is still colour in the forest; the bright green of the pines mixed with the rich brown of the leaves that still remain on some oaks; the white bark of the Silver Birch with green lichen like a duvet around the tree. Trees that have lost their leaves still have black branches that wave in the wind and change shape against the sky, while the brambles seem almost in a time warp waiting for the warmer weather in spring to promote speedy growth around the ground. The Arboretum within the forest has various trees which show different colours throughout the year and is a must to see each season. The holly also adds a touch of green. These sights are beautiful but there is much more than just this; the sounds are also special. Like the running of the water travelling around the forest, showing itself now and again in streams alongside walk ways and then quiet in the conservation ponds. The ground is mostly clay and has that delicious squelching sound when you walk.

Today there was a warm smell of wood when arriving back at the centre and a noise in the background of a saw, which reminds us that this is a working forest. I can’t wait to go again and see what is new to see, hear, smell and touch if a bit drier than today. Yes, I was a little wet when I returned home but a cup of tea and bath is a lovely ending to the morning, and the experience of exploring such a beautiful setting makes it all worthwhile.

“Islands of Prayer”

Bewdley Baptist Church is hosting this year’s Women’s World Day of Prayer on Friday 6th March.

This is an international, interchurch event enabling us to hear the voices of women from a different part of the world each year, expressing their hopes and concerns and bringing them before the rest of the world in prayer.

The theme chosen this year by women in the Bahamas is from John chapter 13 and challenges us to demonstrate the same radical, unconditional love that Jesus showed when he washed the feet of his disciples. Our ‘Islands of prayer’ interactive installation will allow participants to move around the church at their own pace, taking time to ponder, pray and respond in a personal way.

Everyone is welcome to attend: men, women and children. The Church is behind 61 High Street and will be open to drop in from 2pm to 8pm, with refreshments available in the Church Cottage. A short joint prayer meeting will be held in the Cottage at 7.30pm to complete the event.

For more information call Bewdley Baptist Church office on 01299 403267. - fun monthly club for primary school children. TOWN COUNCIL NEWS

TOWN COUNCIL MEETING HELD ON 2nd February 2015

Council Budget The Town Council set its budget for 2015/16. It was agreed there should be 0% increase in the level of Council Tax for Bewdley. In comparison with the County and District Councils and the Police and Fire Authorities, the Town Council has a very small budget. Indeed of the overall Council Tax bill for an average “Band D” household of £1532.97 only £25.71 is currently levied by the Town Council.

The budget sets aside a cash contribution towards the improvement of the play area at Shaw Hedge Road plus money to renew some of the Christmas Lights which are the subject of a Working Group carrying out a review of their provision. Significantly, funds available for grants to voluntary groups have been increased having regard to what was considered to be considerable pressure on them arising from losing grants from other mainstream sources such as the County Council.

Neighbourhood Plan Following investigation by the Better Bewdley Advisory Committee, the Council agreed to the concept of Bewdley having a Neighbourhood Plan. This could give the opportunity for local planning policies to be put forward after full consultation with local residents and which could enhance the character of the town particularly its historic town centre. This plan will take time to draw up and will require input from volunteers in the community. More news will follow. Recycling Banks The District Council were consulting on options to relocate the recycling bins from the Dog Lane car park as part of the development of the medical centre, which should start soon. Options included moving some to the car park in Gardner’s Meadow and to the sports centre in Stourport Road. None were ideal.

Vehicle Activated Speed Sign Councillors agreed to purchase some additional software, which could be fitted within the new 30 Slow Down sign, which was on order and which would give a wealth of information about numbers and times of speeding vehicles.

Future Town Council Meetings Town Council meetings are held at The Guildhall at 7.30pm on the first Monday of each month unless stated otherwise. The next meetings are: 2nd March, Tuesday 7th April and Tuesday 5th May. The Annual Town Meeting will be held on Monday 13th April 2015 at 7.00pm. Agendas of Town Council, Planning and Finance Committee Meetings are posted on the Notice Boards outside the Mayor’s Parlour, in the Guildhall Foyer and by the Library Entrance and on the Town Council’s page of www.bewdleytowncouncil.org Minutes of those meetings are also available at the Library, on the website and at the Town Clerk’s Office.
