The Bridge - April 2015

The Bridge April 2015

April in the Forest

April is, by my reckoning, the middle of spring. The earlier signs of life and growth are replaced by a general busyness and acceleration which brings us new leaves, flowers, butterflies, the appearance of fox and badger cubs and the arrival of many of the summer’s bird visitors.

Swallows seem to be fewer in number each year, but I hope that the reasonable weather last year may have helped them. They have to survive many dangers to reach our country, and once here they need food, catching insects on the wing, and breeding sites where they can nest under cover. The classic site would be on a ledge or rafter in a barn and the nest is a mud cup, lined with feathers. In the past their efforts to build at Uncllys have unfortunately been disturbed by our cats, but they may fare better now that one has died and the other has become more middle-aged! The building used for nesting must have an open door or window to allow the birds constant access, but even a brick-sized hole will be enough. An artificial ledge about 15cm wide and with a rim of beading to keep the nest from sliding off could be fixed high in an outhouse. (I may have a go at making some papier mache nests to make up for the criminal records of the cats.)You can also help swallows and house martins by making sure there is a nice, muddy puddle available for building material (perhaps in an upside down dustbin lid), and you may be rewarded by seeing up to 3 broods of nestlings during the summer. Mid-way through March a new family trail was launched by the Forestry Commission. ‘Superworm’ follows on from the success of the Gruffalo trails, both based on children’s books of the same names by author Julia Donaldson and illustrator Axel Scheffler. A short trail leads from the car park past boards bearing pictures of Superworm and friends, information and suggestions for forest activities. Super or not, the forest soils couldn’t do without the worms. They drag down leaves into their burrows, enriching the soil with humus and allowing materials to mix and be aerated. They are also the main food of shrews and moles, badgers and many birds. Moles can eat 50grams of worms a day, and an area of grass the size of a football pitch can hold up to 2 million of them! (Thank you, Springwatch, for those figures!) Actually a football pitch or golf green probably doesn’t have any worms in it because green keepers poison them to prevent wormcasts, and consequently have to do the fertilising and aerating themselves. So there you are, two things to get you looking up and down this month!

The Bridge is the community voice of Bewdley

It is free and delivered by volunteers to more than 4,600 homes every month Visit us at www.bewdleybridge.org.uk

Philip Moore’s sunny cover picture welcomes us to April’s edition of the Bridge. We were delighted when Philip’s photographs arrived in our inbox and are pleased to feature more of his local pictures in our centrespread.

Bridge readers have been reflecting on the town’s recent past and recall the time before the bypass was built. See photographs of this lost landscape on the centre pages. If you have similar memories to share, we would love to hear from you. Archie Smith is too young for such memories but tells us why he likes Doris the hen on page 21. Please send us news and stories of your pets and animals for what we hope will become a regular feature.

Bewdley Farm Shop in Dog Lane has been part of town life for a long time. See the centre colour pages to discover why owner Tony Thompson is celebrating this month and spot a 19 year old Tony with hairstyle to match.

St. George will be remembered in town this month. Turn to page 29 for details of Bewdley’s Fair. Also marking St. George’s Day will be Bewdley District Scout and Guide Band. The Band has a long history and is now seeking new members. Find out more on page 33. And if last month’s colour poster about Bewdley Rowing Club’s Pub and Club Regatta inspired you to have a go, then turn to page 23 to find out how you can take part. Training starts this month!

Elsewhere in the magazine, we bring you advance notice of Bewdley Bike Week, a new event in the town, and Rock Pound the Bounds, now in its 15th year. And, as always, notice of talks, walks, demonstrations, exhibitions and concerts.

2015 sees the return of the Bewdley Passion Play, this year presented as three plays in three days. Look out for information throughout the magazine about this very special Easter event. A Happy Easter to you all. Gill Erratum: In March’s Bridge, we included Margaret’s name at the end of an article on page 43 instead of that of the writer, Joanna Georgui. We apologise to those concerned for this error.

Trees Again!

Community News

As voluntary Tree Wardens acting on behalf of Bewdley Town Council, Cliff Willmot and I frequently examine planning applications involving trees. In the Conservation Area which covers a large part of Bewdley, it is necessary to make an application to the Local Authority to carry out any work on any tree. Recently, we have noticed that a high proportion of these applications have related to trees that have self-set in an undesirable place – in a crack at the base of a wall, for instance. Had these unwanted and unplanted trees been pulled, or dug, up whilst they were still too small to fit the legal definition of a tree, then no application would have been necessary. It is easy to miss these trees when they are small, and in my own garden last year we found a walnut tree that must have been there for two or three years, and wondered how we had not spotted it earlier! This one had been planted by a squirrel although most arise from wind-borne seeds from neighbouring trees. We urge you, therefore, to pull these aspiring trees up whilst they are small. As well as preventing future damage to property, this may save you from having to make a planning application at some future date when the tree has become too big to ignore. In this area, the most likely culprits are Ash, Sycamore and Horse Chestnut, although other species, including holly and some conifers can also be a nuisance in this respect. Although I advocate pulling up these future trees growing in the wrong place when they are small, consider if you could re-plant them elsewhere. We need all the trees we can get, but have to accept that sometimes they are growing in the wrong place. You may contact Cliff or myself through the Town Clerk’s Office 01299 400157 or by email to assistantclerk@bewdley.org.uk Gren Jones

Shocking News for Bewdley

Later this year at the entrance to Bewdley Museum you may see a brightly coloured cabinet. It will house a defibrillator, a machine that can deliver a shock that may restart the heart of someone who suffers a cardiac arrest. This is when someone stops breathing and their heart stops beating. With their chance of dying increasing by 10% every minute, the quicker someone can give CPR and apply the machine, the better. It’s easy for anyone to use the machine, it’ll even talk to you and tell you what to do. Nevertheless, later this year, West Midlands Ambulance Service which has provided the defibrillator will offer free training to anyone who wants it . Thanks go to Wyre Forest District Council for allowing it to be housed at the front of the Museum. All we need to do is buy the secure cabinet. Look out for me and my fellow Community First Responders as we fundraise and please give generously. We are also looking for Community First Responders in Bewdley. Call 07583 508577 for more information. Phil Bowden Co-ordinator of Kidderminster and District Community First Responders. 19

Bella’s Blog Life In Bewdley Primary School

Half term was fabulous. it was so lovely to have Bella at home with William and me for a whole week. We had some lovely trips out: to The Hive in Worcester, a few walks in the forest and some swimming. I was very sad to see her go back to school. Bella and her friends have already had a busy couple of weeks since being back; the aforementioned milk bottle, Elmer Elephant, materialised, as did the teddy bears’ picnic. Mrs. Field had asked parents to donate one or two cakes or biscuits if we could for the picnic; the parents threw themselves into this with enthusiasm and the class was inundated with hundreds of sweet treats. Needless to say the children came home on three consecutive days buzzing with sugar overload! The poor children also seem to be coming down with all kinds of bugs; Bella had a day off with a stomach bug, and her good friend ‘J’ had a particularly spotty dose of chicken pox – whatever next? We have lots more lovely things to look forward to before Easter. There’s the Easter Disco which promises dancing fuelled by the ever popular tuck-shop, glow sticks and glitter tattoos. Then there’s the Chocolate Hamper Raffle and the Easter Bonnet Parade, Bella’s bonnet is an ‘egg-stravaganza’ of chicks, flowers and bunny lights (yes I did say bunny lights!!). Well done PTFA for organising all these exciting events. Check-in next time to see how we got on….

Doris the hen

My pet is a hen. Her name is Doris, and she’s a Wyandotte. I like her because she’s quite pretty and she’s a good layer. I always know when Doris has laid an egg because she makes a lot of fuss. My mum and dad say she makes the noise because she’s showing off. One of my jobs, when I come home from school, is to feed the hens. We have seven altogether and they are all different breeds. I give them all a scoop of corn and some laying pellets. Then I check to see if any of the hens have laid eggs. After that I can have my tea; it’s sometimes eggs! Although the hens need cleaning out quite often that is too hard for me to do so Dad does that. All the muck goes on the compost heap then after a few months it goes on the garden to feed the vegetables. Then the hens get some cabbage leaves and all the caterpillars. I’m glad I’m not a hen! Fancy trying something different this summer? Give Pub and Club a go!

What is the Pub and Club Regatta? A family fun day held each year by Bewdley Rowing Club. This year it takes place on Saturday 30th May. People new to rowing, competing in crews of 4, race side by side in knockout sprints for the chance to win a pewter tankard and club membership for the year. Whether you are competing or spectating, it’s a great day out, with refreshments and food available all day.

Fancy dress has become more and more extravagant over the last few years; it’s not compulsory but there will be a prize for the best costume, so be imaginative. Take a look at the gallery on the website to see past crews. How do I take part? Enter crews of 4 into the men’s, women’s or mixed category by downloading and filling out the entry form from bewdleyrc.co.uk. Over 18’s but no top age limit. When do I start? Training starts Monday 20th April

What do I get for my money? For £60 a crew, you get dedicated individual crew coaching for up to 6 sessions from current Bewdley Rowing Club members and entry to the race day. This year we have a fleet of new carbon fibre boats to use.

Places are limited and fill up very quickly: don’t delay, it’s never too early to get your entry in. For more information visit www.bewdleyrc.co.uk or contact the Pub and Club team on 07732 117453 Kat Carlyle Club Captain

Thoughts from the Secret Gardener

Gardening teaches us patience. So why do we all get so impatient at this time of the year? The weather and the new season foster urgent desires to work soil, sow seeds, plant out, cut lawns and “do the garden”. Impatience grows because we are always at least two paces behind where we would really like to be. That bed needs to be reduced to a fine workable tilth. Those tomato seedlings need to be pricked out. Sow the broad beans. Plant out the lettuces. Dig the bean trench. Get the onion sets in. Prune the roses. Guard against slugs. Whoa there! There is plenty of time and even if things do go in a bit late, they soon catch up and even if they don’t, does it really matter? Think of all the good things that have been done. Hedges have been trimmed before the birds start to nest. Apple trees have been pruned before the sap rises. Seeds have been sown under protection. Bulbs have been planted and what a show they are putting on! Just one thing though. Is it just me, or is Mr Mole more active this year than ever? Mole hills are appearing everywhere. I couldn’t trap or harm one, but they don’t half make a mess on the lawn and borders. 23

Antony Thompson Bewdley Farm Shop 25 years

The 3rd April 2015 marks the 25th anniversary of the day Tony Thompson took ownership of Bewdley Farm Shop in Dog Lane, Bewdley. At the age of just 18, he decided to purchase the shop when the previous owner retired in 1990. Tony had worked there for just over a year and sacrificed many things in the beginning, even selling his beloved Mini to raise the deposit.

First sign written van 1991 Running the Farm Shop is no easy business: a typical day can start with checking the phone messages at 2:00 am for late night orders from restaurants, then back to bed for an hour or two before travelling to Birmingham Wholesale Market and then on to Bewdley.

So what has made Bewdley Farm Shop such a long standing success? His team point to four key elements:Tony always looks for good quality at a good price and passes on that quality and value for money to his customers; he values the community and supports a wide range of local events and buys local produce wherever possible; he has built a good and loyal team, including John who started in 1992 aged 13 and is still working there, now as shop manager. And, of course, his keen sense of humour: the jokes played by Tony (and on Tony!) are just too numerous to list here… Salad challenge 2014

Bewdley Farm Shop is built on friendly relationships with customers and personal service. How many 18 year olds would have had the initiative, or the determination, to purchase and then build a business at this young age? And Tony’s best seller? Potatoes. About 3 tons per week, averaging 120 to 150 sacks. That’s an awful lot of shifting… Tony works hard and puts in long hours but he still loves it. Thank you, Tony, and congratulations on your Silver Jubilee.

A Local Photographer : Philip Moore

As an amateur photographer living in Bewdley, I enjoy taking photographs while walkin photography, but I try to take my camera with me wherever I go. We are lucky to live in colours throughout the seasons. I am always trying to improve and learn new technique my photographs are taken with the camera facing towards the sun (a technique known contrast. I remember the days of film, but technology has changed photography in many necessary, but I try to remember that photography is all about ‘capturing the moment.’ If you would like to view more of my photographs please visit: www.facebook.com/phil

My main interest is in nature and landscape n an area surrounded by beautiful countryside, and I like to capture the changing ues and often revisit locations to try to improve on an existing photograph. Looking Back... Before the Bypass

Nearly thirty years ago I took a class of pupils from St.Anne's Middle School along the proposed site of the Bewdley bypass. We took these photos of a landscape that has disappeared for ever. Do any of our readers recognise these views? In times of flooding and road closures I am glad that we have a bypass, and Bewdley has certainly benefited from that detour, but what have we lost in our worship of fast transport and modern conveniences? Tony Redstall

Our Fifty Years in Bewdley

Fifty years ago, after our wedding, my husband and I moved into a brand new house on Hales Park. I can only imagine the outrage at so many new houses being built on a beautiful cherry orchard, but we were very grateful for our first house. I'd like to share some of the changes we have seen during those years. When first married, like most couples we had only one car so I travelled to my workplace in Kidderminster by bus. I remember the times the river was flooded and I had to walk across wooden planks put across from Load Street to a higher part of the bridge and then catch the bus on the other side. A small inconvenience, however, compared with life for the residents whose homes were flooded. We are now so lucky to have the flood barriers. Another memory was the summer Sundays when the traffic using the Cleobury Road into Bewdley was tailbacked so far it was almost impossible to get off Hales Park. That was probably the time we decided that Sunday afternoons were best spent walking. Fortunately in 1986 the bypass was opened and what a difference that made. When our children were born, I did my weekly shop in Bewdley. In those days we used a pram and I recall being able to leave the pram, plus baby, outside the shops with steps. Imagine being confident enough to do that today. We wouldn't change anything about our fifty years in Bewdley; we have loved every minute. Very contented Bewdley residents

Bewdley Museum and Tourist Information Centre

Community News

Over the winter months, staff and volunteers have been renovating, decorating and cleaning every nook and cranny; making sure that everything was ready for re-opening at the beginning of March. Two areas in particular have been improved for visitors. The Agricultural section has been refurbished, complete with ‘Lazy Turf’ - very realistic but no mowing required! The area next to the Air Raid Shelter has also undergone a transformation. After much enthusiastic digging, a short length of a replica World War 1 trench has been created, formed from some of the different types of materials which would have been used at the time. To tie in with the School Easter holidays, there will be Children’s Seasonal Craft sessions on offer in the Sawyard, weekdays only. The ever-popular Easter Egg hunt will take place on Easter Sunday. A small charge will be made for these activities. Throughout the forthcoming season, volunteers and staff will also be on hand to talk about and demonstrate various crafts and trades such as claypipe making. Anyone wishing to become a volunteer can find out more by speaking to a member of staff on the number below. Alternatively, you can leave your contact details with the Tourist Information Centre . For the Museum’s opening times and other information, please refer to our new website www.bewdleymuseum.co.uk, phone 0845 603 5699 or pick up a leaflet at TIC. From 28th March until 1st November, Museum and TIC opening hours are from 10.00am to 4.30pm. Many local Visitor attractions are now opening for the new season, so call into TIC for a wide selection of maps, walk leaflets and local information. Discounted tickets are available for West Midlands Safari Park and Severn Valley Railway. Sue Duffield

BEWDLEY DISTRICT SCOUT AND GUIDE BAND

Community News

Bewdley District Scout and Guide Band was founded in 1984. After a year of fundraising, the band received a £100 pledge from a local businessman to play on the Bewdley Bandstand. From this performance came a lot of support and new members, as well as much needed funds. Soon the Band was ready for its first parade and since then has gone from strength to strength. Bewdley Scout and Guide Band can be seen on various parades throughout the year including: St George’s Day parade in April to celebrate the patron saint of scouting and guiding,Bewdley Carnival in June, Mayor’s Day Parade in June and Remembrance Day parade in November, to honour those who have fallen in war. We also parade at other local events as: School Fetes, other local Scout and Guide Districts parades, including Bromsgrove’s St Georges Day Parade. We are now recruiting new members to join our band. If you play a musical instrument or would like to learn, please come along to practice on a Monday night from 7pm - 8-30pm at 3rd Bewdley (Wribbenhall) Scout Hut at the top of Spencer Avenue, Wribbenhall, Bewdley. Behind the Baton

Although this is April's Bridge, I'm going to take the opportunity to tell you about Bewdley Choral Society's next concert on Saturday 9th May in St Anne's. The choir will be presenting an evening of French music culminating in a full performance of Faure's beautiful "Requiem". For Choral singers, Faure's Requiem is a special piece of music. It has some very well-known movements - the famous Pie Jesu solo for soprano probably being the most familiar - but it really is a work with no weak links; every aspect of the work is crafted in great detail. Although, as a Requiem Mass, it is a piece written about death and life after death, it is an uplifting work with the purity of the final “In Paradisum” promising eternal life and leaving the listener feeling very much at peace. For this performance, the choir will be joined again by the exceptional young soprano Nikki Martin, who some of you will remember from the Society's last concert back in November. Joining Nikki on the platform will be our well know local Baritone Alan Fairs as well as the professional players of the Bewdley Baroque Soloists. Contrasting with the Requiem, we shall have more Faure, as well as music from Cesar Franck and Camille Saint-Saens. French music has a certain unmistakeable “Frenchness” to it which is difficult to describe. I think it must be the evocative melodies and rich harmonies which give it that character. So, if you wish to enjoy a relaxing and reflective evening of the most beautiful music from France, please do come and support the concert. Before that, I have two other exciting performances to look forward to, both when I step off the conductor’s rostrum. Next Saturday, I shall be part of a large chorus in Tewksbury Abbey performing Mahler’s 2nd (or Resurrection) Symphony. It’s an epic work with orchestral forces of over 100, offstage brass and organ as well as the singers. It culminates in a huge final explosion of sound and, I must admit, I’m extremely excited about being involved in a performance of it. Then two weeks later, on Saturday 5th April, I shall be joining many other Bewdley people in another “Resurrection” event as we perform the “Resurrection Musical”, that is, the final part of Bewdley’s 2015 Passion Play. It’s a super, entertaining piece, composed by local composer Jim Ineson with dramatic moments and some great songs. You’ll see lots of information around the Town about the Passion Play and I hope people will come and support the Musical. Alastair

The Guild of St. George

John Ruskin founded his charity the Guild of St George in 1871. With help from his friend George Baker (who built and lived in Beaucastle) he was able to buy some land in the Wyre Forest - now called Ruskinland. As well as owning two farms and 100 acres of Wyre Forest woodland, the Guild owns a meadow in Gloucestershire, part of a small village in Hertfordshire and Ruskin's collection of works of art, medieval manuscripts, minerals and sculptures curated by Sheffield Museum. The Guild's activities are growing and developing and it is now seeking the services of a parttime (initially one day per week) Administrative Assistant to help manage its affairs. This post will be based at Uncllys Farm initially before moving to a permanent office at St George's Farm on Ruskinland. We are looking for someone who is well organised and able to keep financial records up to date, organise arrangements for board meetings and other office based activities If you are interested and would like more information please call John Iles on 01299 488083 or email accounts@guildofstgeorge.org.uk

Hello, Goodbye, at Bewdley Library

Community News

It's the right time to celebrate the endings and new beginnings that are an inevitable part of the turning of the wheels of the year and of life itself. Following a few changes to the library service, we are happy to welcome our new manager Jacqueline Passey, who joins us after a successful time managing Droitwich Library. This brave woman is now responsible for Stourport, Tenbury and Bewdley libraries so please say hello if you see her, as she will probably be tearing off somewhere in the blink of an eye. We also say a sideways goodbye to James, who is the new Team Leader for the StourportTenbury-Bewdley triangle. He will be based at Tenbury but will visit Bewdley once a fortnight and will be on hand to provide support when needed; so there's still the opportunity for banter and occasional stationery stand-offs! So welcome Jackie, we hope you like Bewdley. Goodbye James, you will be missed. The wheel turns…. Kay Sanderson

Pleased to meet you, Kay

Kay, a familiar face to library users (and of course, to our Bridge readers) isn’t a Midlander by birth; born in Sheffield, she was at school and university in the North. Her journey south began in her early twenties. After an English degree at Sheffield she explored the world of work on both sides of the Pennines. There were various jobs:working in restaurants, retail - all the usual things. Not so usual was a spell as a croupier in a casino. (“I only dealt the cards; I had to wear a skirt with a slit up the side; you weren’t allowed trousers unless you were doing dice; they had to lean right over the table”). Finally, a voluntary job working with children decided her future; a teaching qualification led to the classroom back in Sheffield. It was in Sheffield that Kay met her husband who was doing a PhD at UMIST. They married after he got his doctorate. His work took him to Malvern, and Kay took up teaching in Kidderminster. After her daughter was born it was time for a change and a vacancy was advertised in Bewdley Library. And the rest of the story is a home in Bewdley, a daughter at the Bewdley School and an efficient presence in Bewdley Library.

Guide Dog Update

I am very excited as the town now has someone who boards Guide Dogs. I hope this will be able to continue. This week, I had the pleasure of accompanying my supervisor when she interviewed a prospective puppy walker in Bewdley. My role was to provide the pup that this lady could 'walk' as part of the interview. All went well and, at last, there may be two Guide Dog puppies in the town. Yashka is now 8 months old. She is entering her 'teenage phase', so requires quite a lot of ‘tlc’ and reminders of what she can do and who is pack leader! She enjoys her training, wants to please and behaves very well at the classes run by Guide Dogs at Wribbenhall Parish Rooms. These are held fortnightly: the younger pups have a 30 minute class followed by a tea/social break; then the 6 month plus pups work for 45 minutes. Each session has a theme: recall, avoiding dog distraction, health care etc. Coping with up to another dozen dogs in a relatively small space requires a lot from both pups and their trainers but is excellent for their ongoing socialisation. Like everyone,Yashka and I have enjoyed the odd day of spring warmth during March. With lighter evenings and spring sunshine we hope to meet you out and about. Many thanks to those who, when Yashka is wearing her 'coat', respect that she is focused on her training and avoid eye contact'. Gabi Wootton

TOWN COUNCIL NEWS

TOWN COUNCIL MEETING HELD ON 2ND MARCH 2015 Grants to Local Community Organisations Councillors agreed to make a number of grants to local organisations including Bewdley Carnival, Bewdley Concert Band, Bewdley Cricket Club, Community Transport Wyre Forest, Bewdley Youth Café, and others, all of whom provide a welcome and much needed service for the community mainly using volunteer support. Grants will also be made to the two Parochial Church Councils, Ribbesford with Bewdley and Dowles and, Wribbenhall to help defray the cost of maintenance of their churchyards. It was agreed to retain until the autumn a small balance to cover any further applications that might be made during the remainder of the year. Bus Shelters Some discussion took place amongst Councillors as to whether bus shelters should be provided where none presently existed, particularly on the Queensway Estate. It was agreed a review of the existing ones should be carried out by the Town Clerk and further investigation be made as to any suitable locations for new ones and the costs thereof as the current year’s budget had made no provision. Town Council for Kidderminster The District Council is currently carrying out a “governance review” to establish whether Kidderminster should have a Town Council. Unlike Bewdley and Stourport it does not have one at present. It was agreed to support the idea on which local government electors for Kidderminster will be able to vote on 7th May.

Town Clerk The Council noted the impending retirement of the Town Clerk, Stephen Inman, following six years in the post and noted arrangements made by the Staffing Committee to advertise for a replacement with a view to the handover to a successor taking place during the early summer.

Future Town Council Meetings Town Council meetings are held at The Guildhall at 7.30pm on the first Monday of each month unless stated otherwise. The next meetings are Tuesday 7th April and Tuesday 5th May (each following Bank Holiday Mondays) and 1st June. The Annual Town Meeting which is open to all residents registered on the electoral roll within Bewdley and Wribbenhall when local issues can be debated informally will be held at the Guildhall on Monday 13th April 2015 at 7.00pm. The Annual Meeting of the Town Council (when the new Mayor is elected) will take place on Friday 15th May at 7.00pm. Agendas of Town Council, Planning and Finance Committee Meetings are posted on the Notice Boards outside the Mayor’s Parlour, in the Guildhall Foyer and by the Library Entrance and on the Town Council’s page of www.bewdleytowncouncil.org Minutes of those meetings are also available at the Library, on the website and at the Town Clerk’s Office.
