The Bridge May 2015
May in the Forest
The arrival of warm weather last month turned my attention to some of the wildlife of the forest that appear to enjoy basking in the sunshine as much as I do. They are the reptiles and, being cold blooded, rely on the temperature around them to raise their bodies to a fully-functioning state. One of the sites where the Wyre Community Land Trust volunteers have been working in recent months is a haven for lizards. I suspect that the clearing of bramble, planting of orchard trees and reintroduction of grazing may make it less attractive to the lizards but they will still have sunbathing spots and places to hide. Most people taking a walk in the forest on a sunny day in spring , summer or autumn will catch sight, however briefly, of a lizard taking advantage of a nice warm rock.
The same is not true of slow worms, which are in fact legless lizards. These beautiful, bronze-coloured creatures are fairly common around the farm but like cooler, damper places, and I could often find them hiding under some sheets of corrugated iron in the yard. I wish them well and a hearty appetite for the slugs they feed on.
The adder, which less than a century ago was still plentiful and locally common in the Wyre Forest, is now restricted to just a few small isolated “island” populations and probably numbers less than 100 individuals in total. Their continuing decline may be due to many factors, including habitat degradation, accidental and deliberate disturbance by people, and an increase in their natural predators such as buzzards, pheasants and crows.
The best time to look for them is as they bask in the morning before the sun gets too hot, but they are notoriously difficult to see and will disappear back under cover as soon as they sense the vibrations heralding the approach of humans. They eat lizards and small mammals such as voles and mice, and favour sunny banks, especially in heathland. The first individuals appear from hibernation in March and they will slough off their old skins during the spring. After courtship and mating in April and May the adults go their separate ways and the females give birth in September. Five to twenty eggs can be produced but since the shells rupture on laying the female appears to give birth to live young. Dropping temperatures in October trigger a return to hibernation underground among rocks or under tree stumps.
‘Fauna Britannica’, Stefan Buczacki’s wonderful collection of scientific information, literary references and folklore about our native wildlife, has some fascinating stories about adders. One remedy for snake bites (now pretty rare and almost never fatal) was to apply water strained through a ‘bag of heads’, containing heads of an adder, toad and newt. There are also references to the supposed protective properties of the ash tree. I could go on, but instead encourage you to look them up for yourself. The photo of the male adder was taken by Rosemary Winnall.

Spring cleaning, eh? What’s that all about? Now we have artificial twenty-four hours-a-day light it can’t be the spring sunshine showing up the winter’s cobwebs. No, I think it’s an excellent excuse for M&S to sell us more homewares and Dulux to tell us it’s imperative to paint the kitchen magenta. (Sorry; magenta is so yesterday. I mean Cat’s Paw or Churlish Green.) I share these thoughts with you because I have just done some spring cleaning myself. As a result I have filled my wheelie bins and all the local charity shops with a strange collection of debris accumulated during my disorganised lifetime. In spite of having moved fifteen years ago (Fifteen? really?) the detritus had built up. Monthly bank statements from 2003 (I don’t have a shredder so they’re buried in the veg beds under the broad beans), three tiny glass flower vases (why?); an interesting collection of padded envelopes quite frankly past their best; a lot of electronic black things, a heap of decorative tins that might come in for something quite soon, although they have already waited thirteen years for their moment; a bag of pastel-coloured wool; (Baby clothes? My friends’ children are past needing those.) and much, much more I’m too proud to tell you about. The sorting process took about two weeks. Not because I’m a slow worker but because I needed ruthless friends to say things like, “Why are you keeping that? It’s broken / hideous / dangerous / never been used in twenty years.” Whereupon I’d moan softly and reach for the binbag. And the moral of this story? Take your pick from the following: u Don’t watch house improvement ads u Keep away from friends with the bit between their teeth u Throw those old biscuit tins away now. Pop into Bewdley’s charity shops and see if you can spot my items or just notice that the magazine is full of much better things to do than spring-cleaning. Margaret

Closure of All Saints’ Churchyard
All Saints’ Church, Wribbenhall has reached the point where it has no more spaces for new graves. Following an examination of the area by the Archdeacon of Dudley, permission was granted to start proceedings. This can take at least two years. To formally close a churchyard due to lack of space a request is put to the Diocesan Registrar who applies to the Chancellor and then HRM who issues the edict. There will be no more burials in new graves. If there is a family grave which you are responsible for and it has space, then that is still usable. There are still some spaces for the interment of ashes in a casket and interring ashes in the Garden of Rest is still alright. Any queries or questions you have please contact Roz Mace on 01299 401605

Our photos of Bewdley before the bypass was built have brought back memories for one reader.
“Looking back”
(Tony Redstall’s photos of pre-bypass Bewdley. “Bridge” April 2015)
The “mystery cottages” (“Bridge”, April ’15) were at Blackstone, set a few yards from the river, where the bypass bridge now meets the Blackstone shore. Few people knew of their existence, since the riverbank was so thickly overgrown that few folk ventured along it, and the only other access was through the farmyard off Stourport Road.
Between 1975 and 1980 we rented one of the two adjoining cottages for £1 a week, as the fate of the buildings was deeply uncertain – they stood in the direct path of the bypass (on someone’s ‘to do’ list since the 1930’s), and were in such a state of deterioration that today they would be condemned as uninhabitable. There was water and electricity, but no sewerage, no bathroom, nothing of any of the commodities taken for granted today, or even in the 70’s. What could we expect for £1 a week? It was obvious that one factor was certain – “THERE WILL BE MUD”. And there was.
What did we get? A blessing, really, and an experience which etched itself on my heart for life. We travelled by bike or on foot, grew all our own vegetables, made (and drank) copious amounts of wine from the riches around us, and lived alongside the seasons. We had peace, skies, river, earth and space. We coped with the cold (aided by paraffin and Calor – Health and Safety look away now!), and rejoiced in the summers, particularly 1976. These days, when I’ve had a really lovely experience I simply call it “A Blackstone moment”.
Under ceaseless traffic of the bypass lie the remains of the cottages and the garden, and I whisper “Hello”, and cannot help feeling that as we “progress” we should be mindful of by-passing values which are precious and irreplaceable….. Margaret Bradbury 19

Pub and Club!
What is the Pub and Club Regatta? A family fun day held each year by Bewdley Rowing Club. This year it takes place on Saturday 30th May
People new to rowing, competing in crews of 4, race side by side in knockout sprints for the chance to win a pewter tankard and club membership for the year. Whether you are competing or spectating, it’s a great day out, with refreshments and food available all day.
Fancy dress has become more and more extravagant over the last few years; it’s not compulsory but there will be a prize for the best costume, so be imaginative. Take a look at the gallery on the website to see past crews.
For more information visit www.bewdleyrc.co.uk or contact the Pub and Club team on 07732 117453

Thoughts from the Secret Gardener
Sowing, growing, potting, mowing. Wow, spring is really here! Isn’t it lovely to have the lighter evenings which give us a chance to get some serious gardening done after work?
Broad beans are a favourite early season vegetable and the plants are now nicely established and in flower, promising a good crop. Best to pick the beans young so that they are green not grey; and sweet not flour-dry. Picking early also helps to defeat the black fly which can be a bit of a scourge. Pinching out the tip of the plant is also a good move as it not only deters the fly but also encourages the beans to set and bulk up.
The greenhouse is full to overflowing with young plants waiting for the risk of frost to pass. Maximum light is really more important than heat, especially during the day, so I will ventilate wherever possible. The lawns are growing well and we should reap the dividend of the hard work of the late winter/ early spring. Raking out the thatch and removing the moss which has come from nowhere allows the grass to get the light and air it needs. After all, grass is a plant like any other and it has the same needs, so a feed of some kind will also be gratefully received! 23

The first part of this month is going to be hectic, as the last few days of the election hit fever pitch. If you fancy something else to think about, remember that we are still here hoping to run courses that will interest and engage our local community.
In May we have card making and quilting sessions planned for the crafty minded amongst you, and we are now advertising a Family History course with a tutor who has run successful courses at Droitwich Library in the past. If you want to delve into your family’s history but are unsure how to go about it, this could be the course to get you started. No family life is totally without incident; without digging very far I discovered that way back somebody in mine ran off with a travelling circus! Just be warned that it can be highly addictive once you start.
Look out for posters in the library advertising times and prices for all the above courses. Pop in and see us, or call the Hub on 01905 822766 for more details.

Bewdley Passion Play It is not often that hundreds of people sit enthralled in Jubilee Gardens on a Saturday evening. They were hearing an extraordinary musical - the third Event in the Three Day Passion.
After the overture, Pilate (Alan Fairs) and Caiaphas (Jonathan Darby) sang a duet in which they attempted to justify their actions. At dawn, Mary, (Claire Worboys) discovered the empty tomb, and sang "Will I go walking with my Lord again?" which held the audience spellbound. Scene 1 ended with Caiaphas singing a powerful song "Dangerous", in which he warns that anyone who dares mention the resurrection will wish they had never seen the light. Act 2 began with the chorus of disciples and followers spreading the word into the streets of Jerusalem. Thomas (Alastair Elliot) arrived on a bicycle and sang "Till I see it myself". Caiaphas sang of his inevitable fall, then the chorus sang "Blessed are those who love the Lord, because their eyes have seen",and Pilate ended the performance with the epilogue " Will you seek the truth or wash your hands?"
This was a very moving musical in which the chorus of disciples and followers also played an important part, and the "young generation" - Lydia Peters and Hannah Perry sang a lovely duet. The Band, who are normally to be found in and around the churches in Bewdley gave a wonderful performance led by the composer Jim Ineson. The stage manager was surely relieved that the weather was kind on that night. The stage, lighting and sound was also very professionally managed. Steve Conway was the Artistic Director of this memorable evening. The last credit should go to Jim Ineson who conceived, wrote music and words of this amazing musical. The audience was quite simply spellbound.
A Local Photographer : Brian Smith These photographs hopefully show some of the beautiful wildlife that is around us here in Bewdley and the Wyre Forest.
Fox A bit worrying for our hens to spot this fox in our garden in the Wyre Forest: but it does look fine, doesn’t it?
Pearl bordered fritillary Thanks to the hard work of many on conservation projects, the Wyre Forest remains one of the English strongholds for this beautiful butterfly that has been one of the fastest declining butterflies in the UK.
Bewdley Youth Festival
Young Musician Showcase – March 27th
The Young Musicians Showcase held in St George’s Hall, as part of the Music in the Hall series, featured young musicians from across Wyre Forest.
The six featured acts were, Beccy Batchelor and Tom Woodcock, Katie Collingridge and Millie Walkley, Joel Workman and Conor Hartley, Hannah Law, Ellisha Green and Swallows.
The standard of musicianship was superb throughout the evening and there were some spell-binding moments that will sit long in the memory of those lucky enough to be there. You do have the opportunity to see these artists perform again as they will all be featured at the next Bewdley Youth Festival event during the afternoon of the Hopfest Family Music Festival, which this year is on Saturday June 13th. You can see more details of this at www.hopfest.co.uk.

Now that Spring is in full swing, the Museum’s herb garden is really coming to life. The abundance of frogs and tadpoles sunbathing amidst the pondweed has surprised many a visitor relaxing in a chair, enjoying a much-needed cup of tea. In the beds surrounding the pond there’s now over 60 varieties of herbs including woodruff, bergamot, giant hyssop and echinacea. With the addition of fruit trees, wildflower mixes and water features, the garden is a perfect place for attracting wildlife such as bees, dragonflies and garden birds.
There will be two new temporary exhibitions on display during May. In the Wyre Forest Gallery, for ‘Bewdley Open Studios’ the Friends of Bewdley Museum will showcase the work of local crafts people and artists. The Sawyard Gallery will play host to ‘Edges’ an exhibition presented by Salmagundi, three local artists. Soon there will be more frequent school visits, so look carefully and you may spot lines of evacuees trooping to Bewdley Railway Station, as they leave behind the Museum’s Air Raid Shelter in their quest to find safety in the countryside at Highley.
On 3rd and 4th May, the Museum will be taking part in Bewdley’s annual Spring Fair. In the Museum, there will be Spring-themed activities, Crafts and Music to compliment the entertainment throughout the town. For the Museum’s opening times and other information, please refer to our website www.bewdleymuseum.co.uk, phone 0845 603 5699 or pick up a leaflet at TIC. Celebrate Spring and come to the Fair
This year Discover Bewdley Spring Fair celebrates its 10th year on Sunday 3rd and Monday 4th May. Special events include guided walks and a rare opportunity to climb the Tower of St. Anne’s Church, which is opening specially and offers a bird’s eye view of the town.
The monthly Local Produce Market will be in Load Street on Sunday and the craft and produce market will extend along Severnside South on both days. Keep a look out for the street entertainers around town.
The popular “Salad Challenge” takes place on Monday afternoon when Chefs from local restaurants and pubs showcase their talents and the theme of ‘growing fresh produce’ continues with the green Market Garden, a special feature of the Spring Fair this year. Located in the orchard of Jubilee Gardens, there will be a range of plants, horticultural supplies and information and advice on gardening. Alternatively, come and watch traditional craft demonstrators at work or visit the spring rabbits.
Programmes for the Spring Fair are available from St. George’s Hall and the Tourist Information Centre in the Museum Guildhall. In case of bad weather, please check www.bewdley.org.uk for up to date information. Further information from Bewdley Development Trust by email at info@bewdley.org.uk or telephone (01299) 405516. Bewdley Methodist Church Angel Fest comes to town
Community News
Angels will be descending on Bewdley this month as the town’s Methodist church celebrates its 220th anniversary.
The church on High Street is presenting a two-day Angel Fest and is inviting everyone to come and see angels of all shapes and sizes – including some representing ‘angels’ in our community.
The church’s minister, Revd Phil Hoar says: “The Bible tells us that angels are created beings who are sometimes used as messengers. In the Christmas story, for instance, angels are sent to tell Mary that she is to give birth to the son of God.” Members of the congregation have been busy making angels from wool, wood, metal, paper, card and even old hymnbooks. Other churches and organisations in town are contributing and there will be themed flower displays and creative activities for children too. There will also be a ‘spot the angel’ trail around the town’s shops.
The church’s celebrations begin with a Songs of Praise service at 6.30pm on Sunday 10 May then Angel Fest takes place over the following weekend. The church and garden will be open from 10am to 5pm on Saturday 16th, then on Sunday 17th the anniversary service is at 10.30am and the exhibition continues from 12 noon until 5pm. For more information see the church’s website: www.bewdleymethodists.org.uk 33

Behind the Baton Writing this as I am just after the Easter weekend, it's hard not to reflect on the events of the three day Bewdley Passion.
From a personal point of view, it was a pleasure to be involved, not only because of the quality of the production, but also because of the spirit and strength of emotion binding the team of people involved together. My personal involvement was only in the Saturday night Resurrection Musical, but I attended the other two plays as well and was moved by both in equal measure. Clearly, from a music point of view, the Saturday night musical "Walking with my Lord" was the focus but there was also plenty of music in the Betrayal play and some very atmospheric use of music throughout Friday's Crucifixion including a beautiful song written by Jim Ineson and sung powerfully in the rain by Beverley Worboys. However, it was Jim's terrific composition on the Saturday that was the musical highlight of the weekend. I must also pay tribute to the sound, lighting and special effects team who managed to create a state of the art theatre in a few hours and then operate it with no real rehearsal as if it had been in place for years. Very impressive stuff. How wonderful that we live in a town that can put on a dramatic event of this quality. Before I finish, I just have time to remind you about a couple of contrasting concerts in May firstly, Bewdley Choral Society with Fauré's Requiem on 9th May in St Anne's church. I am very excited about this concert, please come and support the choir as they take on this magical and profoundly moving work. Then in contrast on 29th May - Hans Chew in St George's Hall, supported by Drifter and Elisha Green from Bewdley, a great evening of Rock 'n Roll, blues and contemporary songs - more details BewdleyLive Website. I'll see you there!

Knit and Natter at All Saints Church Wribbenhall
Community News
All Saints Church Monday group Knit and Natter started about 2 years ago. The idea was for everyone to be able to knit for children with no cost to themselves but their time. They now knit not only for children but for some seven charities including Children in Need. We often have various charities asking us to knit items to help them raise funds.
Mind you, it’s not all about knitting. Most of us come from all around the area; we meet most Monday mornings between ten and about twelve o’clock. When we meet there’s a lot of nattering; ideas get swapped and we get to hear all the latest news. We all enjoy the tales of what some of the older ladies got up to in their younger days (but we daren’t let these get into print!) and this causes lots of laughs. We all share companionship, friendship and concern for each other and I think everyone recognises the warm and friendly atmosphere in our group. Then there are the people who come in just for coffee. They too are made most welcome we don’t make them pick up the knitting needles!
The ladies in our group call me (the organizer) a mad woman. That may be true - but I know that I and all the group are very proud of what we have achieved. Gail Lawrence

Ash Trees
There is increasing concern that Britain's ash trees could go the same way as our elm trees as a result of the spread of the ash die-back disease (Chalara). As tree wardens, Gren Jones and I have been asked to keep our eyes open for any signs of this disease locally. To do this we need to know where the ash trees of Bewdley are.
Please help us by reporting the location of any ash tree known to you. The location, described as accurately as you can, should be sent in an email to: townclerk@bewdley.org.uk who will pass all the messages on to us. If you would like to help but would prefer not to use email, arrangements have been made for boxes for written messages to be placed in Bewdley Library, the Tourist Information Centre and in the cafe at St. George's Hall. Letters to the editor............ Dear Editor,
Have any of your magazine’s readers tried a new tactic in the fight against the gardener’s deadliest enemy, The Slug?
I grow vegetables in my garden and for years have tried all the things they tell you to use; I ate as many eggs as I could manage so that I could use their shells round my lettuces; I strung copper bands round tubs of tomatoes; I kept the garden more tidy than my living room; all to no avail. I had to make do with what the slugs deigned to leave me, and frankly, I wasn’t happy.
My latest ploy has been in the fridge for a fortnight, to my partner’s disgust. It is a plastic tray containing some beige dust neatly covered so that it looks like a ready meal. Inside, I am informed by the manufacturers, are millions of microscopic worms called nematodes. Their one aim in life is to home in on slugs and devour them. This morning I have followed the instructions and watered them on to the garden with a cheery wave, wishing them bon appetit. I really hope they are very, very hungry.

TOWN COUNCIL NEWS
TOWN COUNCIL MEETING HELD ON 7TH APRIL 2015
Car Parking in Bewdley Town Centre
Discussion took place amongst Councillors as to the vexed issue of car parking in the town given spaces would be reduced shortly whilst the new medical centre is being built in Dog Lane. It was agreed the District Council should be asked to provide free parking in their car parks for up to 20 minutes but that the free parking on Thursdays should be scrapped and also that any permitted on-street parking should be limited to 20 minutes. This would encourage better turnover.
The “Together” Advisory Group
Councillors agreed to set up an Advisory Group to coordinate and expand the work already being done to help mainly elderly people living on their own to become more involved with their local community. Anyone interested in helping is always welcome. Please contact the Town Clerk for further information.
Lengthsman’s Scheme The Council has agreed once again to participate in the County Council’s Lengthsman’s scheme where
a small sum of money is provided by the Highway Authority to enable the Town Council to engage a Lengthsman to keep the roadways and pavements clean and tidy and free of weeds and vegetation. Householders should note it still remains their responsibility to cut back hedges and bushes that grow over any pavement which may cause obstruction to pedestrians particularly those with wheelchairs or pushchairs.
Vehicle Activated (Speed) Sign It was noted that the Town Council had taken delivery of its second mobile speed warning sign. The
existing one is currently rotated around five sites – Habberley Road, Dowles Road, Cleobury Road and Red Hill and more recently on Wyre Hill by St Anne’s School. This second one which can give much more detailed information about individual vehicle speeds and volume of traffic will be deployed at those sites and potentially elsewhere subject to County Highway’s approval. Councillors were especially keen to get vehicle speeds reduced in the High Street and Lower Park.
Future Town Council Meetings Town Council meetings are held at The Guildhall at 7.30pm on the first Monday of each month unless stated otherwise. The next meetings are: Tuesday 5th May (following Bank Holiday Monday), 1st June and 6th July. The Annual Town Meeting which is open to all residents registered on the electoral roll within Bewdley and Wribbenhall when local issues can be debated informally will be held at the Guildhall on Monday 13th April 2015 at 7.00pm. The Annual Meeting of the Town Council (when the new Mayor is elected) will take place on Friday 15th May at 7.00pm. Agendas of Town Council, Planning and Finance Committee Meetings are posted on the Notice Boards outside the Mayor’s Parlour, in the Guildhall Foyer and by the Library Entrance and on the Town Council’s page of www.bewdleytowncouncil.org Minutes of those meetings are also available at the Library, on the website and at the Town Clerk’s Office.
