The Bridge October 2015
October in the Forest
I hope many of you took the opportunity to look at the exhibition about the Wyre Forest at Bewdley Museum during the summer holidays. The ‘tree’ where visitors could write down what they liked best about the forest yielded some interesting results. “Climbing trees and feeding the fish” sounds quite a challenge and I’m sorry that Brooke, who “likes giraffes” will be disappointed, but I’m sure looking for fairies and hiding from dinosaurs is time well spent! Otherwise there were lots of votes for the kind of things you would expect: trees, nature, walks, bike rides. On the wildlife front, owls and other birds, butterflies and bugs had plenty of votes while deer, spiders, frogs, squirrels and lizards each had a small but loyal following. Go Ape was top of the activities provided at the Forestry Commission’s Callow Hill site but there were many mentions of the playground and the Gruffalo/Superworm trails. What I found most gratifying was the large number of children who loved to go to the forest just to run and play, explore, climb trees, kick leaves and build dens (and even “learn about nature” – hurrah!). On Saturday 24th October visitors to the forest can do all these things but also have an exciting day at the Wyre Forest Fayre at the Discovery Centre, Callow Hill from 10am to 4pm. There will be guided walks and activities, a variety of local and traditional producers and craftspeople from in and around the Wyre Forest. You can browse stalls, taste freshly pressed apple juice, try your hand at green wood working, watch some chainsaw carving, get involved in bushcraft and plenty more to keep the whole family happy. You can also bring your own bike and see some of the beautiful sights of the Wyre Forest on a guided bike ride with Step-Out, home of fantastic outdoor experiences! Wyre Community Land Trust will be bringing along some livestock. Come and say hello to the pigs (Peppa and George, surprisingly!) - you can see some of their cattle grazing in meadows in and around the Wyre. Details can be found on www.wflp.org.uk.
This is the time of year to see a good variety of fungi: the forest’s recyclers. I’ve already seen a surprising number in my lawn, which must be rich in the mycelium (the vegetative structure, if that helps) of various species which produce the fruiting bodies above ground when conditions are right. A good crop of chunky, tasty-looking mushrooms (possibly milk caps) were largely munched by slugs even before the lawn mower got them! I’m extra cautious and never eat wild fungi because I can’t trust my own identifications. Make sure you enjoy the season. Linda Iles

Welcome to October’s edition of The Bridge. Autumn is definitely in the air and in the pages of this month’s magazine. Look out for details of the Discover Bewdley Harvest Fair on the back cover and of Pumpkin Day on page 27. Kay Sanderson tells us what scares her on page 41 and Kim Leach invites 5 - 11 year olds to a Light Party on page 21. October brings us Bewdley Festival and another entertaining week. On page 35, Alastair Elliot tells us what he is particularly looking forward to this year. Bewdley Youth Festival is holding an exciting event on the professional stage at the Mercure. See page 23 to find out what brings the BBC to Bewdley. 2015’s Bewdley Book Week has been hailed as the best yet.Turn to page 11 to read about this popular event. The visit of Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy, one of Britain’s best known and admired poets, was a highlight. Read more about her visit on page 39. This month we bring you what we hope will be a regular feature. Turn to page 31 to find some of the activities on offer in Bewdley for parents of young children. We would love to hear other suggestions you may have of what is available for preschool children in and around the town. Colin Hill’s photographs of town events often feature in The Bridge and we are pleased that he is out and about so often recording what goes on. Turn to the centre pages to see some of Colin’s other pictures and find out a little more about him. Do get in touch if you would like to share your photographs with us. This month our What’s On page is so full, some events don’t appear. Remember our regular listings page inside the back cover brings you What’s on in the Hall, including details of the very popular Thursday Film Programme. Please continue to send us material to our email address below. If you don’t have access to email, Peter Kirk can offer help with this. Leave a message for him at the coffee bar in St. Anne’s Church, open Tuesday to Saturday from 10 until 2. He may need a week or so’s notice before the 10th of the month deadline. We always enjoy hearing from you! Gill

Bewdley Book Week 2015
Mary Rose Benton of Bewdley Bards
Community News
What a week that was, with twelve events crammed in seven days! Raymond Tallis got the week off to a good start as he talked about his new book. Geoff Tristram then gave us an entertaining evening, packed with anecdotes, recounting the history of JB’s, Dudley’s legendary music venue. The Bewdley Bards shared their poetry and prose with a packed audience, while Oggy Boytchev shared fascinating insights into his work with the BBC as a foreign affairs producer. That evening many tough souls braved the cold and the damp for the Sawyard Poetry Slam.
Next we had a lovely afternoon with Dinah Jefferies who gave an interesting talk about her novels and how Bewdley has played a significant part in her writing. Then Bewdley Historical Society shared their recent discoveries, followed later by the Film of the Book Night where Suite Francaise was discussed.
However the sell-out headline event of the week was the visit of Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy, supported by folk band Bitterroots and fellow poet Michael Woods. An Dinah Jefferies enthralled audience was spellbound as we listened to poetry that could either make us break into a smile or break our hearts. Particularly poignant were the poems accompanied by music. The unlikely mix of folk music and poetry hadn’t sounded promising but we were treated to an unforgettable night of rich entertainment.
On the final day it was lovely to have the chance to recognise the talents of our younger citizens when the prizes were awarded for the Bewdley Schools Short Story Writing Competition. The Hall was then set for afternoon tea and cake with Katie Fforde and Jo Thomas. A relaxed and lighthearted discussion was complemented by much laughter and homemade cake. We rounded off the week with our Literary Quiz Dinner at The Hop Pole. The feedback from audiences confirmed what a wonderful week it was but it was one unexpected message that best summed up the book week. A woman visiting Bewdley on Saturday chanced upon the Katie Fforde and Jo Thomas event. On impulse, she bought a ticket and stayed for the afternoon. Afterwards, she said that she’d been taken aback by the warmth of her welcome, the friendliness of the organisers and audience alike and that she’d had a memorable day. She said that she wouldn’t Bewdley Historical Society forget Bewdley and would be back soon. Photographs: Colin Hill Jan Ferguson

What happens now Keith has left?
As reported in last month's Bridge, Keith James (vicar of both Bewdley and Wribbenhall) has now left Bewdley to take up a position in Norwich Cathedral. We wish Keith, Linda and their family every happiness in their new home. So what happens now? There is an established process in the Church of England for recruiting a new vicar, and by the time you read this the church councils of both Wribbenhall and Bewdley will have met the Archdeacon of Worcester to start that process. It is quite usual for this to take several months; a period of vacancy sometimes known as an 'interregnum'. During this time, however, all the churches in the parishes will continue to operate as normal, with services at the usual times and wedding and baptism planning exactly as before. To arrange wedddings contact Roz Mace on 01299 401605
For baptisms come along to one of the Sunday services for a chat. The rectory phone number will still be in operation to record messages which will be picked up regularly each week and you can still make contact via the web site: www.bewdleyparish.org.uk.

Bewdley Museum and Tourist Information Centre It’s changeover time again for the programme of exhibitions, with the Bewdley Festival Exhibition now in place. This year’s featured artist is Penelope Timmis SWA ARBSA RSA with A Breath of Fresh Air. Penelope is a local artist, who has exhibited her work nationally. She has a unique and distinctive style, making her work instantly recognisable.
The Bewdley Youth Festival’s exhibition runs until the end of October; the theme this year is Bewdley Rocks! Bewdley Civic Society has partnered the Abberley and Malvern Hills Geopark to deliver the annual local history project with the Bewdley School and Sixth Form Centre. Each year the Civic Society works with Year 7 pupils of the school and to celebrate the imminent opening of the school’s new Science block, the theme this year is Geology.
Tickets for this year’s Bewdley Festival are currently available to purchase in person, from the Tourist Information Centre. Several events have already sold out so if you are hoping to attend one of the remaining performances, please book early to avoid disappointment.
The 2016 calendar ‘Reflections Around Bewdley’ is now available to purchase from Bewdley Tourist Information Centre for £6.99. The calendar is truly inspirational and all the photographs have been taken by the very talented local photographer Terry Livesey. To see more of his work please visit www.TerryLiveseyPhotography.co.uk. Proceeds from the sale of this calendar will go to the Midlands Air Ambulance.
Lastly, Museum Technician Steve is in the process of creating a new Fishing and Coracle display, so if anyone has any fishing equipment from the 30s to 50s that they can donate, it would be much appreciated.
For the Museum’s opening times and other information, please refer to our website www.bewdleymuseum.co.uk, phone 0845 603 5699 or pick up a leaflet at TIC. Ah, the dying embers of the cricket season. Henry Blofeld eulogises, “September really is such a lovely month!” He’s right, of course. It is a month when the grass starts to slow down and the lawns need less cutting. Mind you, they still need attention: scarification to remove all the old grass and thatch, autumn feeding of some kind to encourage root growth for a strong start next spring and raking to get the early leaf fall off as soon as it falls. Meanwhile, Bismarck springs to mind. His famous policy of “divide and rule” is good not only for 19th century empire builders, but also for our perennial plants in the border! A great time to dig up and divide big clumps of plants which will benefit from giving the fresh young growth room to breathe. The hardy geranium, heucheras, crocosmia are just some which will thank us for the treatment.Yes, some of the jobs have been done this month and those which have not can still be tackled in October. The apple crop is excellent. Cookers, eaters and crabs all add to the colour in the garden and to the delight of the cook in the kitchen. Is blackberry and apple the very best flavoured pie ever? So, not bad to be able to mention Blofeld and Bismarck in the same breath! SG September 2015

CHRISTMAS 2015 Again this year Cards for Good Causes is opening its shop in Bewdley Library from Monday 26th October until Friday 18th December Mon-Wed-Thur-Fri (10am to 4.30pm) Sat (9.30 to 1.00pm)
Cards for Good Causes (C.F.G.C.) sells cards on behalf of specific charities. The charities pay to have the cards designed, printed and distributed by C F G C through its national network of shops. In other words the charities invest in the print and production of the cards and look for a return on that investment. Because the cards are sold by C F G C but printed by the charities C F G C is able to return a higher percentage to the charities, whilst at the same time retaining a very small percentage of the price to cover its running costs. We give back at least 70p in every £1. The Bewdley shop sells cards for over 30 charities, some local i.e. Kemp Hospice and, Worcestershire Wild Life, also lots of national charities, along with many stocking fillers, gift tags and wrapping paper. Over 30 local people from Bewdley and the surrounding areas freely give their time to run the shop. Please do come and see us, if only to browse. Sheila Limbrick

A Local Photographer : Colin Hill
Severn Side South
Morning on Kinver Edge
A Local Photographer : Colin Hill Colin Hill took an interest in photography in his teens and found exciting images of the pop groups which came to Frank Freeman’s Dance School on Sunday nights in the 60s and 70s. These were exhibited a few years ago at the Art Gallery in Kidderminster Library to the delight of the visitors seeing their heroes and their trendy young selves.
He now uses his photographic skills to promote local events and charities that would not normally get into the local press.
Bewdley is such a photogenic town with an active community and Colin can frequently to be seen with his camera along the River Severn or in Jubilee Gardens at a market, exhibition or the Duck Race. At over six feet tall and with his top hat on, he’s hard to miss.
A Worcestershire spring morning
When Colin retired - after working as a toolmaker for the same company for 50 years - he was able to concentrate full time on his photography as well as his charity work with Lions. He shows his images at art exhibitions such as the Royal West of England Academy in Bristol
Colin shares his secret holiday destination in this month’s cover picture with an image of the River Paraguay in the Pantanal in Western Brazil.
More of Colin's images can be found on the web site colinhillphotographer.co.uk. In Jubilee Gardens

Bewdley Mummies:
written by a Bewdley Mummy for other Bewdley Mummies, Daddies, Grandparents and carers. In Bewdley and the surrounding areas we are blessed with a wealth of groups, clubs and activities for Mums with pre-school children, but not everyone knows about them. Being a new Mum, or being new to an area can be a very lonely time, even though you feel as though people expect you to be having the best time of your life. The cold reality of having a new baby, or being new to an area, is the daunting task of finding things to do with your little ones. Having been in this situation myself I have compiled a list of things to do with your child in and around Bewdley. Monday: Noah’s Ark Toddler Group at Bewdley Baptist Church. In High Street, Bewdley (term time only). Starts at 10am, £1.50. There is a waiting list for this very popular group so you would need to contact Carolyn Streatfield either through the Noah’s Ark Facebook page or by popping into the group to speak to Carolyn in person.
Wednesday: Little Acorns Toddler Group at Rock Village Hall. Next to Rock Church. Starts at 9.30am. £2.00. Only a short drive away but well worth it. A really friendly group of people, run by local Mums. When the weather's nice the outside decked area is open, the hall is in a lovely setting. Just turn up to this group, no need to book. Again a lovely friendly atmosphere.
Thursday: Forest Friends at Wyre Forest Discovery Centre. Meet every Thursday at 10am. £3.00 There is a different activity each time. Sometimes they are ranger-led, sometimes you collect a pack and take yourselves off.
Friday: Noah’s Ark Toddler Group at Bewdley Baptist Church. Generally people can only attend one of the sessions a week. Same details as above. There is always a craft table, hot and cold drinks are free and toast is just 10p.
10:32 @ Riverside which is a Barnado's Children's Centre based next to Bewdley Primary School. The centre runs in conjunction with the other Children's Centres in the Wyre Forest area so there is usually a group or activity to be found at one of their venues.
And finally let's not forget Riverside Park, just off Northwood Lane. A lovely safe and enclosed park with a shallow paddling pool during the summer holidays. There are also Bewdley Museum and Jubilee Gardens, both well worth a visit. The Museum usually has something available to entertain our little ones.

Community News
I was lucky enough to get down to Jubilee Gardens twice in August for the excellent free concerts - both under some degree of sunshine as well... The first took in Deborah Rose and the O'Farrells Frolics for an afternoon of great folk music. Of course, Deborah's pure and sometimes haunting sound is known to many Bewdley residents and she was in great voice performing a wide range of folk inspired songs. She was ably supported by the O'Farrells Frolics who, by the way, you can also catch every second Wednesday of the month at the Cock and Magpie. It was a super afternoon of high class folk music and I, for one, was thoroughly chilled by the end of it. The following week brought another high class performance, this time in the form of Jazz provided by Colloosion. We were treated to an afternoon of classic jazz standards, brilliantly executed by some very experienced players. At risk of sounding ageist, you can’t beat the effortless quality of jazz musicians who have been playing together for many years. I think Jazz lends itself to that kind of experience, and Colloosion were a great example of this, delivering number after number with great music style. Again, another very chilled and enjoyable afternoon – all, of course, for free. Many thanks to Wyre Forest District Council and Bewdley Museum for giving us such high quality free music.
Of course, October is Festival Month which is extremely exciting. If you want to know more about what’s on musically, check back to my review of the musical programme in the August Bridge. Personally, I’m looking forward in particular to classical Sunday which is a busy day for me but an extremely rewarding one. I also wanted to take the chance to highlight the Mari Wilson gig on the evening of Saturday 10th. I think this will be a great night and tickets are still available. Her “Ready Steady Girls” show is more than just about her Beehive of the 80s. Mari pays tribute to the female stars that inspired her, including Dusty Springfield and perhaps more poignantly, Cilla Black. For those that would enjoy an evening of classic songs from across many decades, performed in a smooth lounge style with some fireside style anecdotes from an artist with plenty of stories to tell, then this gig is for you. I’m certainly looking forward to it very much indeed.
If you’re going to any of the Festival concerts, I hope you enjoy them – maybe I’ll see you there. Alastair Elliott

Buzzing in Bewdley:
An evening of poetry and music with Carol Ann Duffy, Michael Woods and Bitterroots.
I have been pinching myself ever since last Friday night, 11th September, when I fetched up at St George’s Hall, Bewdley for this event which was part of the Bewdley Book Week. Did I really see the Poet Laureate reading, with such dry humour and genuine warmth, wonderful poems from her collections, The World’s Wife, Rapture and The Bees? Did I hear her friend and local poet, Michael Woods read from his wry and honest work too? Did I foot-tap and sway Carol Ann and Michael with the thrilled crowd and happy poets to the delicious book signing after the show folk and bluegrass of Worcester-based band, Bitterroots? And did I find all these delights in the softly-lit hall with its arches and high ceiling glowing with subtle shafts of mauve and cream? I rarely get to Bewdley these days. On this occasion, an old friend saw the advert in The Bridge and, by luck, we got tickets in time. I had never been to St George’s Hall before and, my jaw dropped from the moment I walked in. It dropped further and further as I was offered the particular treats of Michael’s ‘rhyming rants’, Bitterroots’ energetic rendition of Springsteen’s Old Dan Tucker, and Carol Ann’s tender readings, with gentle accompaniment from the band, of her poem about Hillsborough written for the Liverpool Echo, and Premonitions and Water about the death of her mother. Sometimes you just stumble on a gem. We did last Friday night. Bewdley, I won’t leave it so long until the next time. And thank you. Bernadette Lynch
The Book Week audience was privileged to welcome the Poet Laureate, Carol Ann Duffy, who took us on a journey through her collections, beginning with ‘The World’s Wife’, a series of monologues in the voices of the ‘other halves’ of famous men. Duffy’s timing, her arch tone and all-knowing looks had us all waiting for the next quip, demolishing Midas, and cronies Tiresias, Dr Faustus and Darwin with her caustic feminist wit. ‘Rapture’ depicts a love affair, from infatuation to the grief of parting. Desperation, joy and tenderness are all present in these love poems.
Duffy’s dexterity and density with language crystallizes universal emotions and experiences; her reading touched the very core of her listeners, whether in ‘Water’, her mother’s harrowing dying request; the sarcasm of ‘Mrs Schofield’s GCSE’ or the wistful image of her daughter who ‘zooms on fresh verbs’.
Carol Ann read alongside Michael Woods, a former teacher at Bewdley High School. Michael’s innovative beer mat poems, celebrate Worcester’s favourite pub, The Lamb and Flag. Then from ‘Absence Notes’, his feelings at the birth of his first child are humorously contrasted by the satirical ‘Kevin de Medici’ who has, ‘a bit of a racket going on the Ponte Vecchio’.
Carol Ann and Michael enjoyed the evening immensely and the Poet Laureate was particularly happy to meet a number of former students whom she had inspired on Bewdley School’s Italian trips and who have taken up careers where Literature is central. Barbara Fauset

October's here, nights are drawing in, and children get excited about dressing up as scary mischief makers. Being a horror fan, I appreciate the benefits of a good scare. We can get lost in a film or a book, and experience nerve shredding situations knowing very well we are going to survive. We can even have a nice cup of tea during it all! Don't make the mistake of thinking that films are the scariest, either. The TV mini-series of 'Salem's Lot' makes you jump out of your skin, but some passages in Stephen King's book leave an icy hand clutching at your heart. And there's a part of 'The Shining' by the same author (sadly not filmed) which has changed the way I view topiary for ever. Same goes for the classics – I remember descriptions of Dracula as being extremely creepy and not at all sexy. Books engage your imagination and let you recreate narrative in your own way; no two people have exactly the same experience. That goes for all stories, not just scary ones. So now it's getting darker and colder, wrap yourself up in a blanket or onesie, get a drink and a book and give your imagination some exercise. It can be very therapeutic. BEWDLEY’S GOING QUACKERS!
Duck House Trail, Jubilee Gardens 3rd to 31st October Bewdley Festival this year features a Community Art Project based on duck houses. These are being decorated by local community groups, organisations, individuals and private companies. This project has been made possible thanks to an initial grant from the Kidderminster Educational Foundation and the efforts of workers at the Emily Jordan Foundation – a charity that offers meaningful work experiences for people with learning difficulties. Bewdley Town Council has also supported this project – and hopes to decorate a duck house as well! In addition, we are hoping that shop windows will also be decorated with ducks. Keep a look out for ducks elsewhere! Don’t miss seeing the imaginative results in the Duck House Trail in Jubilee Gardens. Expect an exciting variety of themes and decorations - and a quacking good time.

Bella's Blog Life in Bewdley Primary School
Our family holiday to Cornwall was lovely. Bella, William and Erin had so much fun playing in the sea, exploring rock pools and eating ice creams. It was everything a typical British summer holiday should be, even down to the sad little faces looking out at the torrential rain through the windows on 2 of our 7 days! So now we're back to the harsh reality of school life, with Bella wanting to sleep in until 8am (something I certainly could have done with during our 7 weeks off) while I nag my reluctant children to "GET UP! GET DRESSED! EAT YOUR BREAKFAST! QUICKER! FASTER!.....". Still, Bella has been blessed with having some fantastic teachers in Year 1. She has the lovely Mrs. Bennett, Mrs. Parker and Mrs. Bower, all of whom seem completely wonderful and, I'm assuming, very patient and tolerant. On her first day Bella assured me that she knew exactly where to put her lunch box and bag, then marched confidently into her new classroom without a backward glance, with no thought for her distraught Mummy and brother. I have to say I was very proud of her. Bella has been lucky enough to be in the same class as her close friends Hollie and Imara so I'm sure between the three of them they will have great fun and cause some chaos. She was then made a Freeman of Bewdley, becoming only the seventh person to be granted this honour since it was inaugurated for our then MP, Stanley Baldwin, in 1925. Louise was presented with an illuminated scroll on 14th May, 2014 and on Mayor’s Sunday this year, received the medal itself. Photograph by Maureen Mundon

Bewdley Town Council - News Town Council Meeting held on 7th September 2015
Neighbourhood Plan for Bewdley The Better Bewdley Advisory Committee is currently considering a Neighbourhood Plan for Bewdley. The Neighbourhood Plan, if voted for by the people of Bewdley, will set out the vision for the town in terms of land use and form part of Wyre Forest District Council’s Local Plan. A public consultation exercise will take place to consider some options and ideas and all residents and business owners will be invited to comment. The Plan will belong to the Town and will inform future planning and development issues. Watch this space for more information coming soon! Together Project The Together Group have agreed to accept an invitation from Age UK Herefordshire and Worcestershire to become an Activity Partner in their Reconnections Programme. This programme of activities aims to support lonely and isolated older people in Wyre Forest to become socially mobile. The Together Group currently run two separate activities and this partnership could see additional activities organised and funded, as well as resources to improve the current offering. This is a very exciting opportunity which will help engage more people who may benefit from accessing social activities, help and support. If anyone is interested in attending an event, or you know someone who may like to come along, please contact the Town Council on 01299 400157.
Local Policing The Bewdley and Rural Policing Team send a written report to each Town Council meeting, and also attend most meetings to answer any questions from Councillors or members of the public. Two issues were brought to the Council’s attention this month which were a spate of antisocial behaviour at Blackstone Picnic area, and also that thieves are targeting domestic oil tanks. Police are patrolling the picnic site on a regular basis, and have also received some intelligence about the oil tank thefts. Residents are being urged to be vigilant and report any non-emergencies using the 101 service. Please dial 999 only in an emergency.
Electricity Supply Works – Bewdley Town Centre By the time you read this, we will have had the first round of the electricity supply works which will connect up the new Medical Centre and renew cabling and other infrastructure. The second round will be taking place in early November. Western Power Distribution took the advice of the Town Council to avoid half term and Bewdley Festival week when planning the works, which was much appreciated by Councillors. The company have engaged well with the Town Council, residents and businesses to minimise any disruption whilst these vital works take place. Future Town Council Meetings Town Council meetings are held at The Guildhall at 7.30pm on the first Monday of each month unless stated otherwise. The next meetings are: 5th October and 2nd November. Agendas of Town Council, Planning and Finance Committee Meetings are posted on the Notice Boards outside the Mayor’s Parlour, in the Guildhall Foyer and by the Library Entrance and on the Town Council’s page of www.bewdleytowncouncil.org Minutes of those meetings are also available at the Library, on the website and at the Town Clerk’s Office.
