The Bridge November 2015
November in the Forest
This month the autumn colours will still be brightening up the forest. I become mesmerised by leaf shapes and colours, from the bright orange of the wild service trees, which stand out like beacons, to the multi-coloured, variously lobed and crinkled oak leaves. Many of the latter are marked with the wandering trails of leaf miners: the larvae of various genera of moth and fly, which munch their way between the two surfaces of the leaf. Have a look – the occupant may have long gone but you can sometimes see how a little island of green remains encircled by the miner’s trail and surrounded by yellow and brown. As the green chlorophyll is lost from the leaf in autumn the other pigments remain and give us the characteristic autumn colours, but in these little islands the green is trapped.
But this is late autumn, and the forest is opening up as the leaves fall and the bracken dies down. The winter vistas appear again and deer can be glimpsed far off, on the other side of a valley, and boundary-marking yews stand out dark green amongst the brown. Most of the leaves are on the ground, where they can be thrown, scrunched or kicked by children of all ages who love their sound and sheer abundance. Parts of the forest may not be very tranquil at the moment. In the New Parks area the trees are being thinned: the traditional forestry practice of harvesting a proportion and allowing the remainder to thrive in the increased space and light. Most of the oaks and other broadleaved trees that line the trails have already been thinned, but the family bike trail will remain closed while the opportunity is taken to resurface it. The Douglas fir, Corsican pine and larch thinnings will provide fence posts, construction timber, plywood and particle board. The European larch is resistant to rot and is valued for that reason but it is also a very fine tree and I would argue for a good smattering of larch around the forest on the basis that it is particularly beautiful in autumn, when its needles turn golden yellow, and spring when the new needles burst from the twigs in soft tufts of brilliant green….but that’s another story. I’m not quite sure why, but this last month I’ve been thinking about silence; quiet: peace: solitude: - and yes, I know these aren’t the same thing, but they are, I think, children of the same family. It came to mind while I was out on one of my solitary walks. You remember; the ones when I can do those things I wrote about a while ago. I should have added silence to the list. My walk was on one of those magical still Autumn days last month when the sun played silly games with us, teasingly casting off one layer of cloud, then another and another till the light beamed down on the fields from a cloudless blue heaven. I know it’s a distant memory, but you may also remember that the days were unusually still and windless. I stood leaning on a gate looking across a field of sheep and realised I could hear nothing. No traffic; no tinny music; no helicopters - nothing. A bird piped briefly from the oak tree across the field; a sheep coughed twice. A little breeze briefly stirred the uncut tendrils of bryony in the hedge then died away. I am an impatient soul but on that green and golden morning I stood for a long time to listen to a wonderful nothing. I wish our lives contained more times when we can switch off the world for a short while to appreciate that silence. I have taken a straw poll of friends and while quietness seems to get more important as you age, some people still in their twenties said that occasional times of silence meant a lot to them. So where can we find these moments? Here are a few I have been given: In the garden; in the bath (but only when the house was free of family); in Ribbesford Church. Let’s start a new list. 10 Places Where Bewdley Finds Silence. Write to me at the usual email address. Margaret

Did you know? Youngsters from Methodist churches all over the country will gather in Swindon this month for 3Generate, our annual children and youth assembly. What do we do? Who Let The Dads Out began at Hoole Baptist Church, Chester in March 2003 and today we are one of 100 registered groups in the UK and overseas. It is an opportunity for dads, granddads and male carers to spend time playing and doing craft activities with their pre-school children in a male-friendly atmosphere (but we do welcome mums as well). There are hot drinks and bacon-butties too! When do we do it? Who Let The Dads Out? takes place on the second Saturday of the month at Bewdley Baptist Church from 9.30-11.30am. Our next time we get together is Saturday 14th November 2015. How much does it cost? There is a charge of ÂŁ1.00 per family which covers the cost of the bacon butties.
Who Let The Dads Out is run by Bewdley Baptist church as a way of supporting families with young children within the Wyre Forest Area. Bewdley Baptist Church, 61 High Street, Bewdley, DY12 2DJ Tel: 01299 403267 www.bewdleybaptist.org.uk 7

Traidcraft Christmas Fair
Community News
7th November 10am - 4pm St. Anne’s Church
A wide range of Traidcraft goods available, produced by craftspeople around the world. Christmas cards and wrapping paper, Christmas treats Wooden toys, jewellery, scarves and bags, beautifully crafted household items Store cupboard food and beverages Lunch and tea, coffee and cakes Join Traidcraft’s campaign to Show You Care and help change lives, by coming along to the Traidcraft Christmas Fair in St Anne’s Church, Bewdley on Saturday 7th November from 10am - 4pm.
This year we’re celebrating 25 years of Traidcraft Christmas Fairs in Bewdley, during which time they’ve gone from strength to strength, offering a wide range of crafts and groceries from our producer partners. Smallholder farmers grow 70% of the world’s food, but make up over half of the world’s hungriest people - 1.4 billion people in the developing world live in poverty, 300 million children go to bed hungry every day, but we can and do help change that by our Fairly Traded purchases. The Christmas Fair is your best opportunity to see the wide range of beautiful gifts, household items, jewellery and accessories, Christmas eats and treats as well as the all important cards and trimmings, children’s toys and so much more.
Christmas is a time of peace and goodwill to all people. By giving a Traidcraft gift you’re not only giving something unique – you really are showing you care to the people who make the products – people like Waseem in Palestine carving olive wood into nativity sets, Mrs Kieu in Vietnam sewing bags, Maribel Cutti crafting jewellery in Peru, Bongi Dlamini sculpting candles in Swaziland.
So I hope to see you at the Traidcraft Christmas Fair in St Anne’s on 7th November. Show You Care – your purchases will make a real difference to real people. Thank you

Thoughts from the Secret Gardener
November is a good time both to look forward and to look back. Forward to plan for next season and back to review the one just gone.
Next year’s spring bulbs need to go in now, especially the daffodils although the tulips can wait until the middle of the month if conditions allow. The bulb planter is a great tool for the job, especially on the lighter soils of gardens in Wribbenhall and the town. It creates the right size and depth of hole without the need to dig and makes the job a joy!
Planning the crop rotation is best done now whilst I can still remember where I grew the crops this year. The roots of legumes(peas and beans) have left nitrogen in the ground and so create an ideal bed for next season’s brassicas. Looking back, it has been a good season on the whole. Many successes and a few failures, just like most seasons really. Gardeners have found it hard to get a good crop of runner beans. Too cold at night. The same cool conditions have made tender crops struggle. Outdoor tomatoes, peppers, aubergines and chillies have all been tricky. In contrast, our fruit trees have been bountiful and the apples in particular have not only cropped well, but look splendid with enhanced colour.
Taizé Services
Taizé services will resume after their summer break at St Anne’s Church on a monthly basis.
Set at 6:30pm on a Sunday evening and lasting just half an hour, they represent an excellent way to be still at the end of one week and prepare for the next.
Taizé worship is based on the community in France with the same name, and consists of worship by candlelight, with repeated chants, silence and a short Bible reading. The first three dates are:
November 8, December 6 and January 17. Please feel very welcome!

CHRISTMAS 2015 Again this year Cards for Good Causes is opening its shop in Bewdley Library from Monday 26th October until Friday 18th December Mon-Wed-Thur-Fri (10am to 4.30pm) Sat (9.30 to 1.00pm)
Cards for Good Causes (C.F.G.C.) sells cards on behalf of specific charities. The charities pay to have the cards designed, printed and distributed by C F G C through its national network of shops. In other words the charities invest in the print and production of the cards and look for a return on that investment. Because the cards are sold by C F G C but printed by the charities C F G C is able to return a higher percentage to the charities, whilst at the same time retaining a very small percentage of the price to cover its running costs. We give back at least 70p in every £1. The Bewdley shop sells cards for over 30 charities, some local i.e. Kemp Hospice and, Worcestershire Wild Life, also lots of national charities, along with many stocking fillers, gift tags and wrapping paper. Over 30 local people from Bewdley and the surrounding areas freely give their time to run the shop. Please do come and see us, if only to browse. Sheila Limbrick

Did You Know - Kate Powell?
This is a photo of my late Great-Grandmother Kate Powell, born 1898 and Bewdley born and bred. The photo was taken at The George Hotel in Load Street where she worked. I'd love to know what year it was taken and who the other ladies and dogs are? Perhaps some of your older readers could tell me? Many thanks

Best of British’ Raises the Roof and Funds for Local Hospice
Bewdley’s Got 2 Sing contemporary choir were part of the 420 strong ‘Got 2 Sing’ team which packed the stage on Sunday 20th September at Symphony Hall in Birmingham for their ‘Best of British’ concert. Beth Dunn, founder and director of Got 2 Sing, was delighted with the success of the evening and commented: “My members should be extremely proud of their efforts – the performance and people’s generosity have gone far, far beyond my expectations!” The Stourbridge-based Mary Stevens Hospice produced raffle prizes and a souvenir programme for the event, raising an amazing £8,781 for the charity’s funds.
Photographs by Peter Roberts Although I am not a keen photographer I like to take some pictures of things that interest me. Here are some examples from the last few years.

Bewdley Duck Houses
Thanks to a grant from the Kidderminster Educational Foundation, support from the Town Council and the involvement of the Emily Jordan Foundation, a local charity that provides meaningful work experience for people with learning difficulties, simply designed, plain Duck Houses were produced and made available to local groups, organisations and businesses for decoration on a theme of their choice. These Duck Houses were enthusiastically taken up by the local community and 32 decorated. The idea was the brainchild of last month’s Photographer of the Month, Colin Hill. The decorated Duck Houses were on display in the form of a Duck House Trail in the town’s Jubilee Gardens throughout October and produced a great deal of interest and pleasure.

Puppy Walking Update
Community News
Bewdley now has 3 puppy walkers, and a boarder for the Guide Dog Association! It also hosts the puppy classes for the area, at the Wribbenhall Parish Room. I am delighted that as a town we can make such a contribution towards improving the independence of visually impaired people.
And now, I would like to introduce Isla to you all. She arrived on the 17th September, aged 7 weeks. Her mother is a black labrador, her father a black curly coat retriever. Isla is fearless and feisty! It has taken time to establish a sleep and spending routine, but we are getting there.
Yashka's move into training has been delayed and having two puppies is proving interesting and hard work.
Isla will no doubt allow me to share some different experiences as a puppy walker. For instance, she brings me her food bowl after a meal. Should she be called Isla Oliver?

We have now formed a new partnership with Age UK Herefordshire and Worcestershire who have launched a scheme entitled “RECONNECTIONS”. This means that we can now welcome everyone from Wyre Forest; not just Bewdley and Wribbenhall. Do Come And Join Us

Age UK Wyre Forest are seeking volunteers for their popular befriending service
Many older people in Wyre Forest live alone and often have no close friends or relatives and can quickly become lonely and isolated. The Good Neighbour Scheme is a befriending service, which aims to help overcome this social isolation through regular visits from a dedicated volunteer team. Volunteers can offer support to people in their own homes through regular visits for an informal and friendly chat, or assistance with small tasks such as reading mail. Due to the high demand for this service, Age UK Wyre Forest are desperately seeking volunteer visitors in Kidderminster, Stourport, Bewdley and the surrounding areas. Volunteers can give just one hour a week if they wish and travel expenses can be reimbursed. If you would like further information about the service or if you would like to volunteer please call Age UK Wyre Forest on 01562 827788

Fifty Shades of Grey Matter A little bit of lifelong learning could be just what you need to keep you going through the dark winter months. I'm a great believer in this and am never happier than when I'm doing a class in something or other. Having a go at something new is widely believed to help keep your spirits up and your brain active, ensuring that you stay young at heart, if not in body. This month at Bewdley Library we are hoping to run the following courses: Cake decorating Starting 6th November for 4 weeks
Gravestone Symbology (History of gravestones) 9th November (afternoon workshop) Christmas Crafts Starting 11th November for 3 weeks
Mindfulness Workshop 21st November (1morning workshop)
For those of you who can go a little further afield, our sibling libraries Stourport and Tenbury are also doing courses in using ipads/tablets, sketching, and Emergency First Aid for the Workplace respectively. So there's something for everyone!
Booking courses is now done online, so go to look at what's on offer. If you need help with booking, go to any county council library and staff will be able to give assistance.

Community News Bewdley Town Council - News Town Council Meeting held on 5th October 2015
Bewdley Town Council – now on Facebook! The Town Council now has a Facebook page as well as our website (www.bewdleytowncouncil.org) where you can keep up to date with the latest news, events and initiatives. Please “like” our page, and you can even comment on posts or send us a message. In addition, we can also promote local events via Facebook, showcase local talent or share stories important to Bewdley residents. So feel free to get in touch if you have something of interest you want to share. Just log onto Facebook and search for “Bewdley Town Council”. Bewdley’s Mayor, Councillor Calne Edginton-White, also has a page where you can find out about the events and activities she has been involved with. Search for “Bewdley Mayor 2015”. Better Bewdley Advisory Committee This Committee of the Council looks at issues, projects and initiatives to make Bewdley a better place to live work and visit. It looks at around three major projects in the year and includes members from other organisations, local traders and other individuals. The Committee is currently considering the Neighbourhood Plan for the town, with a Steering Group to be set up to manage this project. Other issues include Welch Gate traffic congestion, Christmas lights and how the Council can work with local traders and businesses to support the local economy. A Traders Group meets regularly and if you are interested in coming along please get in touch. Local Policing The Bewdley and Rural Policing Team send a written report to each Town Council meeting, and also attend most meetings to answer any questions from Councillors or members of the public. One issue was brought to the Council’s attention this month which was a spate of antisocial behaviour at Bark Hill and Wribbenhall where youths were throwing eggs at properties. Local traders are asked to use their discretion when selling eggs to youngsters. Now that the dark nights and chilly mornings are coming, West Mercia Police are asking people to be careful not to leave valuables in vehicles, remain with cars while they are being defrosted and ensure valuables are not on show through property windows. Residents are being urged to be vigilant and report any non-emergencies using the 101 service. Please dial 999 only in an emergency. Use of Tesco Car Park The Town Council are receiving reports of near misses when cars are reversing out of the Tesco Express store car park in Load Street, which involves crossing the footway. People using this car park are reminded that it is an offence to reverse into a main road, and that you must turn your car around using the turning area provided and exit forwards. The staff at the store have been advised to warn drivers should they see this happening, and the local policing team are also aware of the situation. Future Town Council Meetings Town Council meetings are held at The Guildhall at 7.30pm on the first Monday of each month unless stated otherwise. The next meetings are: 2nd November and 7th December. Agendas of Town Council, Planning and Finance Committee Meetings are posted on the Notice Boards outside the Mayor’s Parlour, in the Guildhall Foyer and by the Library Entrance and on the Town Council’s page of www.bewdleytowncouncil.org. Minutes of those meetings are also available at the Library, on the website and at the Town Clerk’s Office. 53

Where Did I Go?
Here’s a little challenge for those among us who enjoy poring over maps.
I went for a walk down some tiny lanes and every time I came to a junction I took a photo of the signpost. So - Where Did I Go?
Send your answer to editorial@bewdleybridge.org.uk and we’ll see who is the first with a correct answer. The prize? I’ll send you a map so you can do the walk. It’s exceptionally pretty.
