The Bridge February 2016

February in the Forest

I wrote this article fairly early in January to meet the publication deadline, with the result that my news is old news and my projections about what may be happening in the forest in February may be way off the mark. All I can say is that flooding has been of disastrous proportions this winter, caused by rains brought by warm air over the warm Atlantic Ocean. The minor personal inconvenience of encountering mud on every possible path through the forest is insignificant compared to the miserable job of clearing out a home flooded by filthy water, and competing with friends to observe the most unseasonal natural phenomenon hides a deeper worry about the future chances of the wildlife whose existence becomes increasingly precarious with each deviation from ‘normal’ weather.

How do wild creatures and plants respond to these events? Flooding along the forest’s Dowles Brook and its tiny tributaries will sweep away many plants and small aquatic animals from their habitats, drown burrowing beasts, and render the waters of the brook too silty for others to fish. If the flood happens in winter it is less damaging than in the summer, when many invertebrates are present in the form of eggs, larvae or nymphs. However, summer droughts are probably more damaging to populations of aquatic creatures. ‘The Nature of Wyre’, recently published by the Wyre Forest Study Group, mentions this as a threat to the endangered native white-clawed crayfish, which holds on in four of the Dowles’ tributaries but is up against pollution, damage to its habitat, and a parasitic fungus carried by the alien American signal crayfish. In a situation like this the resilience of a population is already low and a catastrophic event can be the last straw.

Early appearances of leaves, blossoms, frogspawn, nest-building and the like bring the risk of all being destroyed by ice or snow if the weather reverts to a more normal pattern and the organism concerned may be unable to ‘do it all over again’.

What can any of us do to counteract such powerful forces as the weather? The human-induced change in the climate is due to the sum of the actions of individuals, and the first step is to recognise our share of the responsibility for this. The similarity with the philosophical question, ‘How can an individual change the world for good?’ is no surprise, and both are nicely answered by Gandhi’s, ‘Be the change you want to see in the world’. Our energy consumption (for transport, heating, electricity for gadgets etc.) has a direct effect on the climate in terms of CO2 production. What we eat and throw away is also part of the problem: beef and milk come from cattle which produce lots of methane, a greenhouse gas also emitted from landfill sites when we throw food into our bins.

I could go on (and often do) but will limit myself to adding that we need to take this very seriously and be willing to take actions that won’t be comfortable.

Linda Iles

Welcome to February’s edition of The Bridge.

As I write, the snow seen in other parts of the country has not appeared here but, on page 19 as well as on the cover and centre pages, Peter Madden reminds us how beautiful Bewdley can look in the wintry weather. We are also pleased this month to include pictures sent to our website of the river in December. Please continue to send in your photographs, particularly those that are local and seasonal.

Elsewhere in the magazine this month, the Friends of Bewdley Museum are asking for your support on page 17 and Kay Sanderson lays down a Bewdley Library challenge on page 21. Kim Leach introduces herself on page 31 and Jenny Paddock says goodbye as Bewdley Festival Director on page 35.

Bewdley’s branch of the Royal British Legion work hard each autumn to raise funds for their Poppy Appeal. Turn to page 19 to find out how much their efforts and your support raised recently and see page 11 to find out why voluntary Fairtrader Elaine Barbour wants to say thank you.

Age UK is keen to promote its Reconnections programme in Worcestershire. Find out on page 39 what is happening to tackle loneliness among elderly people and please contact their service if you think it may be of help to someone you know. We are always pleased to promote activities that may connect those who live alone through the pages of our magazine. Send information to the email address below or drop a note into St. Anne’s Church.

Were you at Bewdley Carnival in 1972? Turn to page 17 to see if you recognise the Carnival Queen and her attendants in all their glory. We always enjoy sharing your pictures of Bewdley’s recent past, so please keep sending them to us.

And why will Bewdley Carnival be so special this year? The answer is on page 29.

2016

Rehearsals are in full swing for the celebration of The Bewdley Passion 2016, which will reflect on the final days in the life of Jesus. This year, a modern choral setting of events during Holy Week will be performed in St. Anne’s Church at 7.30 p.m. on the evenings of Good Friday, March 25th and Holy Saturday, March 26th.

The Passion story has been depicted through music since the Middle Ages, and has continued through the sublime (Bach, Handel, Stainer) to the commercial (Superstar, Godspell). Our Bewdley Passion retains the structure of the traditional Passions (with chorales; an Evangelist narrating the story; two choruses; and soloists taking the roles of Jesus, Mary, Judas, Caiaphas and Pilate); but framed within a modern musical style.

Words and music are by Bewdey resident Jim Ineson, with choral arrangements by Heather and Alan Fairs. The Musical Director is Alastair Elliott and the cast is led by notable local singers Jonathan Darby (Jesus), Alan Fairs (Caiaphas), Claire Worboys (Mary), Stuart Wishart (Judas), Mike Dernie (Pilate) and Harry Lewis (The Evangelist).

Artistic Director Stephen Conway returns to oversee his third Bewdley Passion event after directing successful productions in 2013 and 2015.

The choruses and the band are all drawn from our local churches, supported by members of Bewdley Choral Society, and this community involvement is one of the features and strengths of the entire Bewdley Passion experience.

Thanks to the generosity of our supporters (which include at time of writing Bewdley Civic Society, St. George’s Hall Trustees, The Helen Rachael Mackaness Charitable Trust, Abberton Spire Fund and Cllr. John Campion), the performances are an offering to the community, and therefore admission is free. Look forward to seeing you there!

Traidcraft Sales 2015

Many thanks to all of you who buy from the Traidcraft stall in St Anne’s church. In 2015 sales from the church, including acting as a hub for others with occasional stalls and special events, totalled £28,121.75. This is a fabulous amount and over £600 more than in 2014.

We are open from 10am-2pm from Tuesday to Saturday and the Traidcraft stall carries a good range of food stuffs and beverages, as well as household items, cards and crafts. So if you’re looking for a gift or just something a little different, do come and browse. The new Spring catalogues will shortly be available and I’ll happily take orders.

Friends of Bewdley Museum

The Friends was registered as a charity in 1977 to create and maintain interest in Bewdley Museum, to assist in acquiring suitable material for the museum collection and to raise money for the museum by subscription or collection.

We rely on a loyal committee to help us continue to meet these objectives and are looking for a minute secretary to record our meetings. If you would like to get involved in this or any other way, please let us know. In 2016 I would like to encourage everyone to join the Friends to demonstrate how much the local community and visitors value and support the museum in the heart of our town. Friends volunteers will be at all the major events at the museum this year; if you would like to find out more, do come and speak to us.

We are working with the museum staff, Bewdley Historical Research Group and Bewdley Civic Society on a project to make photographs, both in the museum’s collection and those collected by Ken Hobson, more accessible to everyone. If you have items of interest to share, please get in touch. To join, please visit www.bewdleymuseum.org.uk for further information or email friends@bewdleymuseum.org.uk. On behalf of the Bewdley Branch of the Royal British Legion, I would like to thank all the shops and public houses who allowed us to place collecting boxes and poppy trays in their premises and the street collectors, members and friends who distributed and collected tins and trays during the Poppy Appeal. Bewdley Library

This time of year sees an abundance of challenges; at time of writing we are well into Dry January, there are Get Fit and Lose Weight challenges (celebrity endorsed if possible) and if you're a real glutton for punishment you might even be doing the Stop Smoking challenge as well. Good luck with all those if you're being brave.

If you're already perfect, not super virtuous or simply don't care, why not try something else? Visit the library and pick out something you wouldn't normally read. I've tried several times now and yes, I've been bored to tears sometimes but I've also found unexpected treasures.

We are hoping to have a promotion of Dublin born John Connolly's books over the next few weeks, featuring his very human Maverick detective Charlie Parker. First class crime writing with a touch of the supernatural (but nothing over the top) is the hallmark of the Parker chronicles; I've just finished my first one and I'm going back for more. I always fancied being an enigmatic detective, but this fantasy is somewhat offset by the knowledge that I can't find my keys several times a week.

A library is a great place to explore new ideas and have the freedom to make mistakes at hardly any cost, financial or otherwise. How many places can we do that? Call in soon Kay Sanderson

As a volunteer Community First Responder with the ambulance service, one of the main problems I have is locating the premises I have been sent to. Many house numbers and names cannot be easily seen from the road, particularly at night.

Could I, therefore, urge everyone to check that house numbers and names can be seen from the road and, if not, consider putting them on a gate or wheelie bin. After calling for an ambulance, it would also be helpful if you left an outside light on at night and, if possible, stand in the doorway looking out for us. Community First Responders use their own cars so have no blue lights or sirens. If you feel your house would be difficult to find you could consider switching on the hazard lights of your car. This would be very useful on caravan sites.

Bewdley Museum and Tourist Information Centre

The museum, Tourist Information Centre and shop have all been closed for January for the annual winter works and will be reopening for business on Monday 1st February.

This year the TIC and shop is being redesigned and decorated. Work has begun to enhance this area by creating more space and light and adding to the sales space in the shop to offer a wider range of gifts and examples of work from Museum craftspeople and local artists and suppliers. The entrance to the museum is also due to have a bright new facelift with new lighting and display boards and more obvious museum signs.

For more information regarding opening, please check out our facebook pages or website www.bewdleymuseum.co.uk, phone 0845 603 5699 or pick up a leaflet at the Tourist Information Centre.

Please call into TIC for a wide selection of maps, walk leaflets and local information. Discounted tickets are available for West Midlands Safari Park and Severn Valley Railway.

Behind the Baton

As you will read elsewhere in this magazine, rehearsals are underway for this year’s Bewdley Passion written by local composer: Jim Ineson. After the success of last year’s Passion, in particular the Resurrection Musical in Jubilee Gardens, we immediately discussed creating something new, along the lines of the great Bach Passions but in a modern style. Those of you who enjoyed the musical last year will be delighted to know this new Passion builds on the wonderful music of last year with even greater variety – light moments, uplifting moments, dramatic moments, reflective and emotional moments. For me, as Musical Director, this is a new experience and a wonderful opportunity. Typically, when preparing for rehearsals, I can listen to many recordings of the programme I’m going to direct and I will often have some pretty well formed views as to the musical interpretation I wish to follow, ideas which do evolve over time but which are based on experiences of what sounds good and what audiences enjoy. In this case, the work is brand new, I’ve never heard it before, so it feels during rehearsals that we are gradually breathing life into a new being. The mutual enjoyment of discussing an idea with Jim, then trying it and liking what we’ve done is really quite thrilling. Do come and see one of the performances, whatever you musical tastes. I can assure you Jim has written a wonderful piece that will stir your emotions fully with the power of the Easter Story. Alastair Elliott

If you are a second car owner, need a car occasionally, would like to connect with the move to electric cars, or worry about congestion and pollution, think about how you might benefit from a car-sharing scheme.

With the support of Transition Bewdley Energy Group, we are proposing to establish an electric car charging point, together with two electric cars in the centre of Bewdley to get started.

The exciting big main event this year is The Van Buren Show, a professional show for adults and children which combines a variety of illusions, magic escapology and circus skills with a modern approach. Pleased to meet you: Kim Leach

Community News

Hi, my name is Kim Leach and I am the new Children and Families Worker for Bewdley Parish and All Saints, Wribbenhall. I’m a chocoholic, hate cockroaches and my secret (not any more) dream is to be in a musical production (can’t sing or dance – but in my dream I am amazing! lol).

I originally come from South Africa, but moved to the UK in October 2002 when I realized that I didn’t want to bring my children up in a place that felt so unsafe. It’s funny really because had you asked me beforehand, England was the last place I would have moved to because of the weather. But I love it here and it has now become my home.

I came over on an engineering visa and worked as a Structural Technician in Leeds, then Harrogate for the first 4 years. In 2003 I started volunteering with a Christian youth project in Tadcaster and really enjoy working with children and young people. In 2004 I became a trustee. When the youth worker resigned in 2006 I was asked on numerous occasions if I would step into his role, but didn’t really think I had the credentials or guts to do it.

A few key people in my life reminded me that I had always loved working with children and that through different events, God had actually shaped me for this job. So after making a very exciting but extremely scary decision, I agreed and started what has been quite a challenging but equally rewarding eight years of Youth Work.

This time last year I sat in the boss’ office and was told, due to the lack of funds, I was being made redundant. The emotional rollercoaster that I went on over the next six months is hard to describe and I wouldn’t wish it on anyone. I know some may not get this, but I know that the only reason I am still standing is because of my faith and a few amazing friends.

Which brings me to the present time. I start 2016 off feeling blessed beyond words.

I moved to Bewdley with my family in August to start my new job as the Children and Families worker. Bewdley is an awesome place, with awesome people – our welcome here has been incredible, thank you.

My greatest desire is to support and encourage parents and carers in any way I can. My hope is that through my work I will be able to invest in your children so that they feel valued, accepted and loved for who they are and encourage them to dream. As someone with a real passion for children and families, I hope that during my time here, I can make a difference.

If you would like to meet up for a coffee, chat, ask questions or share ideas about things you’d like the church to get involved in I’d love to hear from you. Please feel free to contact me on 07850038307 or email me at kim_leach1@yahoo.co.uk.

News from Bewdley Festival

After eighteen years at the helm of this hugely successful annual Arts Festival, Jenny Paddock has announced her retirement as Festival Director.

Jenny is famous for her ebullient, yet determined, character, her fundraising skills and, of course, as the face and voice of Bewdley Festival. Having brought the popular touch to Festival’s annual line-up of events and performances, Jenny ensured Festival’s financial health and has introduced a string of ‘stunning’ acts and performers year after year.

Jenny’s time as Director has seen Bewdley Festival mark 25 years of success with the installation of a commemorative piece of public art - Jubilation - in the town’s Jubilee Gardens and Festival’s involvement in the refurbishment of St George’s Hall, resulting in a highly successful community and arts hub in the centre of Bewdley. Another milestone was the ability of Bewdley Festival to jointly fund the installation of a cinema at St George’s Hall.

Following a successful appeal for new volunteers in 2014, Jenny has said that she is confident that Bewdley Festival is being left in good hands. She now looks forward to being an audience member for Festival 2016 and to the 30th anniversary year in 2017.

Who Let the Dads Out?

What do we do? Who Let The Dads Out? is an opportunity for dads, granddads and male carers to spend time playing and doing craft activities with their pre-school children in a male-friendly atmosphere (but we do welcome mums as well). There are hot drinks and bacon-butties too.

When do we do it? Who Let The Dads Out? takes place on the second Saturday of the month at Bewdley Baptist Church from 9.30-11.30am. Our next time we get together is Saturday 13th February. How much does it cost? There is a charge of £1.00 per family to cover the cost of the bacon butties. Bewdley Baptist Church, 61 High Street, Bewdley, DY12 2DJ 41

Reconnections – tackling loneliness in Worcestershire

In 2015, Age UK Herefordshire and Worcestershire launched a new programme to tackle loneliness – ‘Reconnections’. The programme, the first of its kind, seeks to help reduce loneliness and social isolation in the county by supporting individuals to connect with the many and wonderful groups and activities in the local community, but in a way that aims to beat loneliness for good. What’s different about Reconnections is twofold. Firstly, it seeks to understand the causes of loneliness, by providing one-to-one support to each individual, working through their situation and understanding what kind of next steps will be both most appealing and most effective for them. Secondly, it understands that loneliness is not just depressing, and bad for health, and miserable, but that it fundamentally undermines people’s confidence and prevents them from feeling capable of taking those important steps towards greater activity, greater sociability, and decreased feelings of loneliness. To address both the causes and symptoms of loneliness, Reconnections connects older people with a volunteer, who works with them to construct a unique plan as well as provide vital support and confidence-building. Together, we’re seeing lonely people find renewed pleasure in life, becoming able to overcome barriers and reconnect with their local community in a way that matches their interests and personality. We’re trying to raise awareness of Reconnections in Worcestershire as a simple and effective way of tackling loneliness. From neighbours to supermarket staff to GPs, anyone can get in touch with Reconnections to refer people who they think might benefit from the service. As importantly, we want people to know that if you are one of the estimated 35,000 across the county suffering from loneliness – change is possible, and we want to hear from them. Over the coming months together we think that we can beat loneliness, but we need help to spread the word. To find out more about Reconnections, visit the website www.reconnectionsservice.org.uk, call 0800 195 8040, or email reconnections@ageukhw.org.uk.

Reaching Out Together to the elderly of Bewdley and Wribbenhall If you would like some company and relaxation in pleasant surroundings do come and join us.You can be certain of a warm welcome, a little entertainment and, of course, tea or coffee and cakes.

Opera at the Hall

Another performance from ‘down under’ once again resulted in a packed St George’s Hall in December. Carmen, vibrant, exciting, colourful, passionate, tragic and with a couple of exceptions, beautifully sung. The Sydney Harbour setting was minimalist but, there was so much action that it worked to enhance the performance. Rinat Shaham as Carmen was sex on legs, seductive, teasing, disdainful and strangely vulnerable by turns, with a voice that conveyed all these emotions effortlessly. Dimytro Popov as Don Jose turned in the kind of performance we have come to expect, proud, tender, despairing and ultimately tragic. Nicole Car as Michaela has a fine voice but needs to stop smiling when delivering bad news and to temper the shrillness of her top notes, and Andrew Jones as Escamillo wavered in places. The chorus and dancers were magnificent, showing real flamenco gypsy passion. As we have come to expect from Opera Australia, some of the costumes were a little bizarre e.g. The polka dot Ascot hats, but other than that it was sufficiently homogenous to make the whole thing work in a glorious riot of colour, movement and music. Fantastic! Let’s have more. Beth Arnold

Challenge Yourself And Save A Life After the Christmas feast and New Year’s fizz, why not set yourself a challenge and Rock Pound the Bounds in aid of life saving service, Midlands Air Ambulance Charity?

Community News Bewdley Town Council - News Town Council Meeting held on 4th January 2016 Evening Taxi Rank The Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team visited the Town Clerk’s office in late December asking for Town Council approval for plans to install an evening taxi rank in Load Street. The evening economy in Bewdley is important to the town and its range of pubs and restaurants in this unique setting are a major draw for people from the wider West Midlands. As has been raised many times, a lack of public transport after 8pm in the evening means that people rely on taxis to get them into and out of the town. The police report that many late night disturbances are from people clambering for taxis, and putting themselves at risk by congregating in the middle of Load Street hoping to force an approaching vehicle to stop, taxi or not. The Council agreed to support the proposal to install the rank which would operate after 10pm and would use the short stay spaces on Load St between the entrance to Dog Lane Car Park and the bus stop, on the Tesco side of the road.

Bewdley Traders Group The Town Council are very keen to engage our local traders to talk about issues that they feel are important to them, and discuss how the Council can support businesses and enhance the local economy. This may be via practical action, support, using the Council’s network of contacts or simply listening and representing. All Traders are encouraged to attend (even just for a chat and a coffee!). Please look out for the next meeting date, or contact Councillor John Beeson via the Council’s website.

Budget 2016/2017 The Town Council’s Finance Committee will recommend to full Council at its February meeting the amount of council tax that needs to be levied on householders to meet the Council’s aims and aspirations for the coming municipal year. The Council is mindful that it has a duty to protect taxpayers from excessive rises, whilst being realistic about the costs associated with its activities and its role in enhancing the services provided by partners and other local organisations. The coming year will see the Council become more active in event co-ordination, work with the community on preparing the town’s Neighbourhood Plan, look at taking on more local services from Wyre Forest DC and financially support community organisations in their work. More information about the budget and about what the Council does can be found on our website. Future Town Council Meetings Town Council meetings are held at The Guildhall at 7.30pm on the first Monday of each month unless stated otherwise. The next meetings are: 1st February and 7th March 2016. Agendas of Town Council, Planning and Finance Committee Meetings are posted on the Notice Boards outside the Mayor’s Parlour, in the Guildhall Foyer and by the Library Entrance and on the Town Council’s page of www.bewdleytowncouncil.org. Minutes of those meetings are also available at the Library, on the website and at the Town Clerk’s Office. 53
