May - my favourite month. A good month for getting out and about again to try and lose that winter pallor. The other day I was doing just that with my friend Janet. Walking past a hedge we saw a rather sprightly bird perching on a twig and jointly wondered what it might be. Other than coming down against an ostrich or a parrot we were vague on the subject. I told Janet about a ten-year-old in my class when I worked in Alum Rock some years ago. Now, not even the most mendacious estate agent would have described the area as Sought After, but when on a school outing this boy - who had lived his ten years in an area devoid of anything green; whose grasp of the 3R’s was at best tenuous - saw a chaffinch sitting on a fence he gave us a fascinating masterclass in bird recognition on the spot.

I thought out loud about other arcane talents I had come across over the years. Claira, for instance. She can tell you what way you are facing even when the sun’s not out. She has a built-in compass; Pigeonwoman, I call her. Mr Wear; lots of you will have been taught by him. When he reads something out loud it’s like plunging your face in a bowl of clotted cream and honey, so mellifluous are his tones. Now, Kath; she can grow parsnips big enough to feed a family for a fortnight. As long as they like parsnips, anyway. Not lettuces; not cabbages; parsnips; that’s her thing. As for my friend Janet; she’s able to assemble a flat-pack in half the time it takes me to sit weeping surrounded by Ikea cardboard.

Now it may be that you, dear reader, have a similarly unlikely talent. Go on - do tell. I would love to be walking down Welch Gate and have someone sidle up to me and tell me how they play the Glass Harmonica or tie Double Turk’s Head knots with their teeth. I am ready and waiting. Margaret

Bewdley Library Have I Got News for You

It's not widely known that you can download and read eMagazines from the Worcestershire County Council Libraries website, free of charge. With the cost of some hard copy magazines now making them a luxury item, it's worth having a look at what's on offer. There is a collection of magazines which you can read straight away, and the service is available 24/7. You will need to be a library member and have an internet enabled tablet, smartphone or computer to have access to the collection. You will then need to access Zinio (the magazine website) and create an account. You can also download the Zinio app onto your device if you wish to download an item and read it later.

Then go into www.worcestershire.gov.uk and access Libraries and Learning, go to eMagazines and log in to your Zinio account. You should then be able to view the magazines on offer and either read there and then or download for later.

More information is available on the WCC website, or pop into any library to get more details. Kay Sanderson

Tower to Town Bewdley Museum July14th - Sept 11th

A few months ago we asked through the pages of The Bridge for contributions to our exhibition, “Tower To Town” - the story behind your purchase of a London poppy.

The response was wonderful; we have material from many of you, ranging from photos, newspaper articles and medals to articles of uniform and even a football medal. (You will have to wait for the exhibition in July to find out the connection!) There are some wonderful memories, some of which left us with tears in our eyes, and stories of quiet bravery from the two world wars and those of this century.

As you read this, the exhibition is taking shape; posters, labels, notices are being produced. Do make a date in your diaries; we are sure you won’t be disappointed. And many, many thanks to all who responded to our request, “Does anyone have something to say about the poppy they bought from the London Exhibition, Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red.” 13

Celebrate with the Methodists

The Methodist Church on High Street celebrates its 221st anniversary this month with special events and, hopefully, the start of building works.

The congregation is already on a high after a successful fundraising campaign to restore the church's historic pipe organ. A sell-out concert by Kidderminster Male Choir brought in the remaining funds needed and in April supporters of the project were invited to a celebratory organ recital by Bartosz Thiede, the talented young organ scholar at Oxford University's Exeter College,

Now work is due to start to repair part of the roof and the front elevation of the Grade II listed Georgian building. This latest project gets underway as members prepare to celebrate the 221st anniversary of the church's opening.

Sunday 22nd the morning service at 10.30 will include the musical 'David', written by Birmingham's Roger Jones and presented by Kidderminster's New Dimensional Experience Choir. Local Preacher Mrs Hazel Quelch will lead the service and narrate the musical, based on the story of Old Testament hero David (of Goliath slaying fame), while her husband John conducts the choir. Bewdley Methodists look forward to welcoming townsfolk over the weekend - especially people who perhaps once attend the church, Sunday School or Youth Club and would like to see what has and hasn't changed!

Bewdley Museum and Tourist Information Centre

On 1st and 2nd May, the Museum will be joining in with the town’s annual ‘Bewdley Spring Fair’. There will be live folk music, family activities and craft stalls in the Museum and Jubilee Gardens to entertain visitors. Towards the end of May, there will be two new exhibitions. ‘Bewdley Open Studios’ will showcase the work of local artists and craftspeople and ‘Vesta Tilley’ will explore the life of the popular music hall performer who was nicknamed ‘Britain’s best recruiting officer’ in WW1.

During July of this year, the ‘One Grain’ Brass Foundry research project will take over part of the Museum. The Foundry, a much loved but hidden part of the site, will come alive under the artistic guidance of renowned London artist Joshua Sofaer. A ‘One Grain’ brass apothecary weight, which was made in the Foundry, will form the basis of an extensive research project. The information will be collated and turned into a unique exhibition from September onwards. So come along to the museum this July, meet the artist, help with the research and take part in activities, with experts on hand. If you require further information, are interested in lending an hour of your time to the research project or have any information to offer, please contact Sharon.Harvey@wyreforestdc.gov.uk .

For many visitors to the Museum, their first experience on site may involve talking to enthusiastic front-of-house Volunteers who can often be found gathering stories in the Air Raid Shelter, moulding Claypipes in the Workshop and making Ropes in the Ropewalk. If you have a couple of hours per week to spare, and you would like to get involved, please contact the Museum. For the Museum’s opening times and other information, please refer to our website www.bewdleymuseum.co.uk, phone 0845 603 5699 or pick up a leaflet in the Tourist Information Centre.

The TIC now offers a wider selection of Maps, Books and Gifts. Staff have been busy sourcing new stocks of locally produced wine, gifts for the home and garden and an eclectic range of jewellery, all at affordable prices. Please come along and browse; staff are here to help and advise. Remember that discounted tickets are available for West Midlands Safari Park and Severn Valley Railway. For enquiries and information, please refer to the website www.visitwyreforest.co.uk or phone 0845 607 7819.

Ruskin Land in the Wyre Forest

Community News

How many visitors to the Wyre Forest are aware of its historic connections with the influential Victorian John Ruskin? In fact the Guild of St George, the charity Ruskin set up almost 150 years ago to advance his ideas for social reform, owns over 200 acres of farmland and woodland in the forest near Bewdley.

St George’s Farm sits at the heart of Ruskin Land in a clearing adjacent to the forest track that links Tanners Hill with the old Bewdley to Tenbury Wells railway track. Neil and Lynne moved into the farmhouse in July last year after the previous tenant, Jack Bishop, fondly remembered by local walkers, passed away.

Building on the achievements of the Wyre Community Land Trust, and working with its small staff team and many enthusiastic volunteers, there are plans to make Ruskin Land more widely known. A new orchard with apple, pear, plum and cherry trees has recently been planted at St George’s Farm, with support from Natural England. Bewdley Methodist Church Church organ refurbishment complete!

Refurbishment of Bewdley Methodist church organ, thought to be almost 200 years old, has now been completed thanks to a successful fund-raising campaign. The money was raised by a "Sponsor a Pipe" scheme and the balance came from various grants and donations. Pipe sponsors have come from all over the UK and support has even come from as far away as Australia and New Zealand.

Supporters of the project are being invited to a celebratory recital on 23 April, when a plaque recording all the people and organisations that supported the appeal will be unveiled by the Deputy Mayor of Bewdley, Councillor Philip Edmundson.

The recital will be given by Bartosz Thiede, organ scholar at Exeter College, University of Oxford, and the programme will include works by Bach, Brahms and Russian composer Georgi Mushel.

Now that my husband nd I live in the depths of he forest I have a readymade place to take my camera. Here are a few hots from the past year.

Abroad thoughts from home

My time abroad and choice of destination were not voluntary – it was National Service in the RAF. I was lucky and was sent to Nairobi, in what was the British East African colony of Kenya, to work in Signals Centre Eastleigh, on the outskirts of the city. Realising that this was a good opportunity to see some more of the world at Her Majesty’s expense, and as a non-smoker and only occasional drinker, I decided to use my meagre pay to take every opportunity to explore. At the time the Mau Mau emergency was virtually over but there were RAF restrictions on where we could travel. There were also ways around these restrictions! In the 15 months there I managed, in the company of fellow conscripts and even regulars, the following:

A car trip on rather rough roads to Mombasa on the coast for a few days leave in a hotel at New Year.

A boat trip of several days around Lake Victoria, starting in Kenya but calling at ports in Uganda and what was then Tanganyika. We became friendly with a Goan family on board whose eldest son was our age. They lived in Nairobi and so we were able to visit them later on several occasions.

A leave involving a train to Mombasa, a civilian flight to the island of Zanzibar (then a British protectorate, ruled by the Sultan) followed by a few days spent at the NAAFI Silversands leave camp in Mombasa, with the chance to swim and snorkel in the Indian Ocean. A return hitch-hiking trip to Dar es Salaam in Tanganyika on sparsely used roads. Various shorter local hitch-hiking trips around different parts of Kenya.

This important time spent off the RAF base opened my mind to the wider world and whetted my appetite for further travel.

The Friends of Bewdley Museum give a cry from the heart

Have you ever wondered what the connection is between a Palaeolithic cave at Lascaux in Southwest France, a fossil dating back to 15,000 BC and Friends of Bewdley Museum volunteers on a Saturday afternoon? Yes, you are absolutely right - rope. Rope making is one of mans earliest industries. Stone Age cave paintings show men climbing using rope and in Britain, ropemaking is said to have been carried out in London since Roman times. The rope making industry grew in areas where the soil and climate of the surrounding area was particularly suitable for the growth of the raw materials: hemp and flax. “Ropewalks” began in country towns to supply local needs and Bewdley was no exception. The most successful rope makers in Bewdley were “Lowes Rope and Twine Manufactuary”. They were established in 1801 and were making ropes up until 1972. Lowes supplied farming, coal mining, boat lines, timber felling ropes, tanneries, bell ropes, the carpet industry and the Baldwin forge at Wilden. Bewdley Museum inherited their essential machinery, which from 1801 to 1870 was manually operated usually by young boys. In 1870, a steam driven system was introduced at Lowes, which brought mechanisation to the ropewalk. We jolly volunteers have no such luxury – we are “back to basics” making ropes by the sweat of our brows! Well, the season has started again and we have attracted appreciative “audiences”. It is a fact that we enjoy watching something practical being made! We do however have a problem. We need three people to make a rope and right now we just don’t have the “ person power” to give demonstrations on a week by week basis. PLEASE could you help? The Friends of Bewdley Museum really need you – especially for rope making! If you feel inspired, please drop by the Ropewalk any Saturday at 2.00pm. You might learn how many miles of rope were needed for the rigging of Nelson’s flagship - Victory - or the origins of heckling and the saying “money for old rope”. If you feel inspired, please ring Pauline Lowe (no relation!!) 01299 404695

Film of the Book Night May 26th Room (15)

Community News

Bewdley Book Week and Cinema in the Hall have teamed up to bring you another Film of the Book Night in St George's Hall on Thursday May 26th. The film is the Oscar-winner Room based on the bestselling book of the same name by Emma Donoghue.

If you haven't already read the book there's still time and you’ll be pleased to hear that Bewdley Library has stocked up with copies so you can read it for free before you see the film. But get to the library soon as there are only a limited number of copies.

Bewdley Book Week will lead a book-group style discussion on the relative merits of the book versus the film immediately after the show and you'll be welcome to take part whether or not you've read the book – or merely come to see the film. Tickets to see the film are on sale from the cafe in St George's Hall or on-line from the St George's Hall website www.thehall-bewdley.org.uk.

We are finalising plans for our Bewdley Mayor's Charity Ball, which promises to be a fabulous evening in the unique Treetops Paillion at West Midlands Safari Park. There are still some tickets available and we would love for you to join us. The Ball is being held on Saturday 7 May and tickets cost £39 per person or £37.50 if booking a table of 8 or more. You will be greeted with a drinks reception on arrival at 7pm, a 3 course dinner and live music from Tongue and Groove our 5 piece covers band in addition to other entertainment. To order your tickets visit www.BewdleyBall2016.co.uk or email secretary@bewdley.org.uk. Please make cheques payable to Bewdley Mayor’s Charity Account.

St Richard’s Hospice

Community News

St Richard’s Hospice, whose shop we see in Load Street, not only cares for patients with life-limiting illnesses; its specialist teams support bereaved families and provides training and support to other professionals that are involved with families at these difficult times. The hospice’s family support team helps parents and schools to understand that children’s feelings may be expressed in behaviours that they might find challenging. We work with local schools to help staff understand and support pupils through their grief and to help students have more balanced and healthier view of death, dying and bereavement.

We help school staff to spot the signs that indicate how a child is coping before and after a bereavement, how to talk to children about their loss and how to support other children at the school.

Following the unexpected death of a pupil at a local school, we were able to help staff to cope with their own distress and that of the pupils, parents and wider community. The Head Teacher said, “When you find yourself supporting staff, pupils and parents who are struggling to understand unexpected events, nothing prepares you. I have told other head teachers about the support we received. I will be forever grateful for your understanding, compassion and practical suggestions. You provided us with a supportive service, which I feel is of the upmost importance.” Sarah Popplestone-Helm Head of Family Support Services

St Anne’s Church Roof Repairs Keeping Our Church Dry

Just a reminder that we are planning for roof repair works to St. Anne’s Church; it means we will have to close each side of St. Anne’s Church to road traffic in turn.

Work is due to commence on 9 May 2016 until 27 May. The road will be closed on the south side with two way traffic lights. We will then be working on the other side of the church from 13 June until 29th July. Two way traffic will again operate on the other side controlled by traffic lights.

We’re really sorry that partial road closures are needed but this is necessary to protect vehicles and people passing underneath high level masonry work on the church.

The work is part of a programme of repair to this historic listed building.

Bewdley Town Council - News

Town Council Meeting Held on 7th March 2016

Neighbourhood Plan In March, the Council held a public consultation event for the Bewdley Neighbourhood Plan. Lots of people came to express their view on how they would like to see the town evolve over the next 15 years, and there were some great ideas! It is not too late to get involved, visit the Neighbourhood Plan website at www.beinbewdley.org to find out more. There is also a questionnaire in this edition of The Bridge for people to complete so we can start building up a real picture of what people want to see in Bewdley. Remember, the Plan belongs to the community, so your input is invaluable, so you are encouraged to complete the questionnaire and return it to the Town Council by the 13th May.

Proposals to Close the “GP Unit” at Kidderminster Hospital Councillors spoke about the proposed closure of the Wyre Forest Community Unit (“GP” Unit) at Kidderminster Hospital which provides 24/7 care to those vulnerable people who are being rehabilitated before returning home. The Council agreed to write to both the NHS Trust and Wyre Forest Clinical Commissioning Group to put forward an objection to this closure which would cause major difficulties for the more vulnerable in our community.

County Lengthsman Scheme The agreement with Worcestershire County Council to carry out minor highway works in the town has been renewed for another year. The Town Council employ the services of Richard Jones to carry out this work, which he has done ably for a number of years. The budget is limited, but if anyone is aware of any highway related issues which need to be attended to please get in touch with the Town Council at www.bewdleytowncouncil.org.

New Website The Council has a brand new website which is now live. It includes a tool which allows users to search for planning applications relating to Bewdley and plots them on an interactive map. This new site is completely free to the Council which represents a saving of around £100 per year. The Council are happy to hear from anyone with suggestions about what they would like to see on the new site. www.bewdleytowncouncil.org. Future Town Council Meetings Town Council meetings are held at The Guildhall at 7.30pm on the first Monday of each month unless stated otherwise. The next meetings are: 3rd May 2016 and 6th June 2016. Agendas of Town Council, Planning and Finance Committee Meetings are posted on the Notice Boards outside the Mayor’s Parlour, in the Guildhall Foyer and by the Library Entrance and on the Town Council’s page of www.bewdleytowncouncil.org. Minutes of those meetings are also available at the Library, on the website and at the Town Clerk’s Office. 49

May in the Forest

I’m looking forward to the leaves. Winter lasts a long time, it seems, around here. The excitement of lengthening daylight misleads us into thinking that we’ll soon be in tee shirts and seeking out the shade, but here I am in April looking out at woods still bare and brown. The hedgerow hawthorns have obliged with their perfect sap green leaves, anticipating the scented white may blossom by several weeks, and the ubiquitous birch has started to turn colour so that the thickets are greenish rather than red-brown: each bud revealing two triangular leaves and a tiny green catkin.

While out walking yesterday we spoke to two birdwatchers and compared notes on sightings of newly-returned house martins and swallows. I’ll soon find out whether the ‘nesting ledge’ that I added above my bedroom window attracts any lodgers. The walkers alerted us to the peregrine falcon they had seen and, sure enough, it was soon soaring above our heads. They had also had reports of ospreys making their way along the Severn Valley. In the area of the Wyre Forest you are more likely to see buzzards crying over the trees or swooping between them, and if you attract small birds into your garden with birdfeeders you may well witness the sudden attack of a greystriped sparrowhawk. Blue tit fledging season is bonanza time for this raptor.

May is the usual month for dawn chorus walks and although I can’t find any details of organised walks in the Wyre Forest this year (making a mental note to get one organised next year), you could set your alarm for 6am and get yourself to some woodland for about 6.30 to experience one of the natural world’s most delightful performances. I know there are ‘apps’ to help with identification of different songs but I’d be more likely myself to take a look at (and listen to) the website www.songbird-survival.org.uk. All of them are so much nicer than the 4am start-up by our two resident cockerels. Any takers for an unusual pet? Linda Iles
