July in the Forest
We look after one of the many old cherry orchards in the Wyre Forest. These were planted early in the 20th Century to take advantage of the high prices that could be obtained for fresh fruit taken to Birmingham and other urban areas by the newly-constructed railway network. Harvesting the fruit was (and is) a very labour-intensive job, especially when the fruit is growing on an old-fashioned standard tree. I now appreciate the origin of the term ‘cherry picking’, referring to taking only the best: you can only pick the fruit that is ripe making return visits necessary in the hope that the birds haven’t found them first. Add to this the danger of climbing long ladders to reach the branches and you can understand why the fruit commanded a high price. In the heyday of cherry production there would be a man to move the ladders for a gang of 8 to 10, usually casually-employed, women pickers. Many who worked in the carpet factories during the day would squeeze in some extra employment in the orchards at this time of year. When we came to Uncllys we set about planting new cherry trees and over the years since have pruned the old trees to keep them standing as long as possible. Even when dead they provide a habitat for some of the forest’s rarest creatures, such as the Noble Chafer beetle.
Spring brings a wonderful show of blossom, but this is only the second year in 13 when we have anything like a good crop of cherries. Some of the new trees are fruiting at last and nearly all of the ‘old ladies’ are having a go, so we are being vigilant at checking on the progress of ripening and trying to get the ladder to the trees in time. We have a number of varieties which ripen consecutively from June to the end of July, with each variety yielding ripe fruit over about 9 days. We can’t put the time in to visit the trees every day, so the pigeons, jays and thrushes help with the picking and other nocturnal visitors clear up the fruit that gets knocked to the ground.
The Cherry Fair, a revival of the traditional annual market, celebrates the harvest on the weekend of 22nd and 23rd July at Bewdley Museum from 1pm to 4pm each day with music, children’s activities, crafts, food and drink. Now, is it to be cherry ice cream, cherry clafoutis, summer pudding, chocolate and cherry gateau…….?

The appearance of the sun in Bewdley has given me a sudden rush of happiness to the brain, so I’ve decided on another list this month. July’s List: Five things that have made me smile. 1. I won’t say where or when to spare their blushes, but walking along a street of houses near me I met two young lads, one of whom had a tiny dog at the end of a piece of string. His companion was barefoot and wearing a dressing gown. We passed each other with a smile and a “hello” and the dog gave a sort of Meow. And yes, it was a dog. 2. Coming up Load Street was what I took to be a two-legged turtle. As the turtle turned the corner I saw it was a man who, after a day’s fishing, was taking his huge umbrella home strapped to his back . 3. Those pink roses on the side of the house just off Lax Lane on the way to Jubilee Park. The perfume! The perfection of their whorled pink faces! Their perfume! Such a profusion! And did I mention their perfume? 4. Something my great-niece said to her teacher. No, I’m not going to say what it was. There’s nothing more boring than the witty - to the family member - sayings of a small child not related to you. But I thought it was rather sweet. 5. And for my last smile, the garage doors in Stourport with a great big teddybear painted on them. I’m redesigning mine as we speak. So far I’ve thought of “This is not a garage door” or multicoloured vertical stripes. What do you think? And a final thought: I know I often put this at the end of my editorial, but I really would love to hear from you if you’ve had occasion to smile so that we can include some more Smiles in our Bridge. Anyone can access county council library services: via the Bookstart bookpacks offered to babies and then toddlers; by participating in the Summer Reading Challenge as children; and as senior citizens with Library Service at Home.
This year's Summer Reading challenge for 4-12 year olds has an 'Animal Agents' theme, in which youngsters are encouraged to crack a crime with the aid of the stickers handed out as they visit the library over the summer. Participants have to read six books of their choosing (up to two books per visit count towards the challenge). It's completely free and is acknowledged nationally as an activity which can help children retain their reading skills over the summer holidays.
At the other end of the scale, we offer a free delivery service of books and CDs to the home for senior members of the community who are unable to get to the library due to mobility and/or chronic health problems. This year’s Cherry Fair at Bewdley Museum is taking place on Saturday 22 and Sunday 23 July and has a 1940s theme. This free family event celebrates the town’s historic links with the cherry trade. Later in the summer Quantum Theatre will be performing a new adaptation of Charles Dickens’s Great Expectations at Bewdley Museum’s outdoor theatre. The show is on Saturday 29 July from 7.30pm. Stunning Landscapes from Space 22nd July – 24th September Featuring images of the Wyre Forest and surrounding area taken from orbiting satellites. This exhibition shows the local landscape of hills, rivers and rocks as never seen before. Ruskin in the Wyre 1st July – 3rd September An exhibition to launch a community based project to tell the story of Ruskin Land in the Wyre Forest, given to John Ruskin's Guild of St George almost 150 years ago. We have a variety of guided tours taking place this month, an ideal opportunity to discover more about the history, trades and pubs of Bewdley. £8.50 including a cream tea. Getting to Know You - Amy Smith
I have lived in Bewdley since 2003. My education background was as a former lecturer and Advanced practitioner at Sandwell College supporting lecturers, teaching 14-19yr old school exclusions students and Special Needs adults. I’ve forged strong links with Bewdley museum over the years; my mother, Cynthia Pearson, had a workshop in the museum creating textiles and wall hangings. When I was at a loose end during the long summer holidays I became a volunteer clay pipe maker but then decided I needed a change and gave my volunteering time to the Severn Valley Railway. I did sign writing; I worked in retail and helped out on the summer activities. I left my post working for Sandwell College in 2015 to work as the Education Officer for the Severn Valley Railway, which again meant working in partnership with Bewdley Museum and with Sue Duffield and the Education groups. And now I have another job because I am back at Bewdley Museum once again as the museum’s new Education Development Officer. As well as expanding our existing links with schools I hope to open up the museum to different ages, levels and community groups using local artists and craftspeople offering a variety of workshops. 17

According to legend the Alchemilla plant (Lady’s Mantle) will enable a woman to preserve her youth. How? I hear you ask. Well, the answer is really quite simple. The secret lies in the crystal dew drops that form on its leaves. However, there are strict rules which must be adhered to for the process to be successful. Not only must these perfectly formed drops be collected in May under the light of a full moon, but the collector must also be alone, naked and bare footed! Unfortunately, my source fails to instruct how this precious liquid should be administered once collected. Therefore I suggest you drink some and apply the rest in any way you see fit. Nor does it suggest any benefit to men so I think we can safely assume we need not get involved.
Why do I tell you this? Mainly because I like to share these little gems of clearly useful information, and also because I find the myths and legends associated with herbs fascinating. Working in the herb garden at Bewdley Museum often gets me thinking about the plants and their varied back stories. We have over forty different herbs growing, each with its own folklore. Who would have thought that drinking a simple concoction made from thyme would enable you to see fairies? And how is it that one plant can produce so many different remedies? For example, hypericum perforatum (St John’s Wort) cured mania in England, protected against hydrophobia in Russia and knocked the spots off a snake bite in Brazil. What amazing plants they are! In my holidays I…..
In my holidays I can sometimes come and help my dad. My dad works in Bewdley Auto Services. When I’m helping my dad there I make tea for the mechanics. I know quite a lot about cars; for instance I know when a car’s head gasket has gone because you can hear the noise of it leaking. When a car has its MOT that's quite interesting because you can see underneath the car and tell if something is wrong with it - whether it’s passed or not. If the car doesn't pass, it has to be fixed, then that person brings their car to the garage on another day for the mechanics to mend it.
I'm very handy with screwdrivers and spanners and stuff and I could change the wheel on a car. But my dad doesn’t let me do that at the garage. I think I'd like to work in a garage when I grow up.

Tickets are now on sale for Bewdley’s seventh annual celebration of writing. John le Carré appears on the Thursday evening in a live-streamed event from the Royal Festival Hall. Four Sunday Times bestsellers appear in person: Sarah Turner, known to millions as ‘The Unmumsy Mum’; writers of women’s fiction, Milly Johnson and Cathy Bramley; and romantic novelist Dinah Jefferies who is making her second appearance in Book Week.
The event culminates on the Saturday night when Brian Patten joins us to read new and favourite poems and reflect on his career with Neville Farmer.
Three actors Ray Brooks, Brian Freeland and John Challis, cover acting, travel and garden renovation and Barney Hoskyns is this year’s chronicler of the music scene. Local writers, Anne and Lizzie Hill on local history, Tim Gibbons on football, Fenella Flack on the follow up to Ironside, and Rosemary Winnall MBE on the Nature of Wyre, complete the eclectic and exciting Bewdley Book Week line up.

Pubs & Clubs Saturday 3rd June saw the annual Pubs and Clubs event taking place in warm sunshine. A large crowd of onlookers watched as Game of Thrones from Stourport won the men’s race; the Unsinkables (happily well-named) won the women’s race; and the mixed race was won by the Church View crew. Best of the Rest was Dickie’s. Well done, all 36 crews!
How The Bridge is Printed Our magazine lands on your doormat at the beginning of every month. But here’s a behind-the-scenes look at how it gets there.
The Bridge team sit at their computers compiling the text and photos for each month from all the contributions emailed to us. The final result is then sent electronically to A&G Print, our printers, in Stourport.
photo 1 Clive “imposes” it ready for printing. This means sorting the pages into large A3 sheets of paper that contain 4 pages of text together with the four pages that will appear on the reverse, all in their right order. That’s 12 large 2-sided sheets and one sheet in colour. photo 2 Phil uses the sheets to make plates using a process that renders them resistant to ink except where the text is transferred photographically.
photo 3 He bolts the plates on to the printing press. The taps adjust the amount of ink required for each area of the plate - more where there is a dark area, less for a bit with a lot of white. It is a skilled job with plenty of opportunity to get it wrong. The machine then prints off nearly 5,000 copies. photo 4 Now the colour pages which form a single large sheet are put through a digital printer.
photo 5 The finished sheets go to the huge guillotine where Adrian slices them in half and trims their edges to size.

My First Job: Jeff Bishop
You may remember Jeff telling us about his first job a few months ago. We chatted for much longer and I persuaded him to continue his tales of his varied career. Ed.
After four years of working in London as a broker with Lloyds insurance, I needed a change from the high pressured world of the City. I became transport manager for a firm that hired high-end marquees. There were marquees for things like society weddings; coming-of-age parties; Ministry of Works events which included functions in the city of London and events for the Royal Family. Then there were the seasonal fixtures; Goodwood, Ascot, Henley. We would go to the site of the events and measure up and work out what was needed to create the magic occasion that they wanted for anything up to 400 or 500 guests. There would be an reception area; a function area; a dancefloor with tables and chairs; a fully equipped kitchen and of course proper toilets and powder rooms with mirrors and easy chairs; on one occasion even a double staircase. There would be lorries with stacks of lavatories (covered with tarpaulins for modesty) bombing down the roads to our next event.
Once at a Royal Garden party, everything had been put in and inspected by Ministry of Works when one of the royal princes came home in his helicopter. The downdraught from the helicopter managed to ricochet off the building and not only did the band tent get blown to the ground; it was also so badly torn that a new tent had to be brought from our works and put up all within a matter of a few hours - a job usually taking a whole day. Miraculously we managed it in time. As usual Her Majesty came out to meet the workmen at the end of the day. She stopped to speak to me and thanked me for our extra work. It was made quite clear that the person concerned had been spoken to and that the Helicopter Mishap would not happen again!
I could write a book about some of the things and places that job brought me - perhaps another time.

A small group of Bewdley people set up the group in 1998 with the help of an Ethical Financial Advisor. It was an immediate success and has given us a lot of fun and pleasure as well as making a good return. We pool our monthly investment money and, after discussion draw on our collective knowledge to decide which shares to invest in.
Over eighteen years we have made extremely good returns on our modest investments, beating most collective investments.

She had been perfecting her abilities for many years and produced a large number of beautiful cards, the proceeds of which were to go to a very worthwhile charity. This title is not a misspelling. I am not going to discuss the Brits, but something far more insidious and nefarious. The bits. Whole cultures are built around seeking to keep The Bits at bay. Sadly they roam freely over carpet and linoleum in my house. They move, they gather, they multiply; they disturb me. How a 6 year-old and her Dad triumph and fail, ......and how we get there in the end.
At the weekend, when I can finally grab an hour to myself, I will enjoy a bottle of red and some TV. After a couple of glasses my attention moves from the TV screen to the floor. I see an ocean of mud, food, fluff, dust and the mysterious detritus of life. The flotsam and jetsam of the mundane congregates in my living room. They all sit there giving off a sonic hum that sounds like 'shame'.
I am at times moved to action. Late at night I can be found pushing around the vacuum stick only to be frustrated with the poor suck. I then pull off the end and apply full suck on my hands and knees, coaxing the bits to come quietly. They do because they know they will be back.
People bring bits into the house, mostly on their shoes. My daughter spills her food. I do too. My daughter loves picking up bits outside and stashing them in her dress pocket.
My solution is simple. We have to learn to hover above the ground so we don't collect any bits when we are outside. I also have to learn better manners.

On Thursday 31st August, Bewdley’s community cinema, Cinema in the Hall and Bewdley Book Week join forces to bring you another ‘Film of the Book Night’. The idea is that you read the book before the event and join a book-group ' ' style discussion afterwards. It’s a formula that has grown in popularity and we expect this to be the best % % yet given the profile of the film, Their Finest starring # # Gemma Arterton and Bill Nighy.
It’s a British film set during WW2 ; an amusing and light read with a brisk plot that makes the pages turn. It’s an ideal holiday book containing lots of incident including vivid descriptions of life in Blitz-ravaged London.

Relate Worcestershire now offers Relate counselling in Kidderminster - a face-to-face, confidential, relationship counselling service which takes place in a private, safe and relaxed setting. The new service is based at the premises of Good Health Naturally, Franche Road, Kidderminster, DY11 5AD where they offer relationship counselling, individual and couple counselling, children and young people’s counselling and sex therapy.
Relate Worcestershire’s aim is to develop and support healthy relationships by helping people strengthen and improve those relationships. Most people have times when difficulties seem hard to cope with. Counsellors help people explore a way forward, work toward solutions and increase understanding in their relationships.
In addition, Relate Worcestershire has moved venues in Bewdley. Previously, at Citibase they now provide counselling from the bungalow at Bewdley Baptist Church, 61 High Street, Bewdley, DY12 2DJ. Crafty Nature
I like to watch birds on my feeder but wish I could attract some different ones; preferably little pretty ones. At present I’m plagued by great fat greedy pigeons, magpies and crows who scythe through the birdy treats with pure avian greed.
The other day I watched in amazement as a magpie hoiked a big block of seeded fat off the feeder and dropped it on to the ground, unhooked the catch and enthusiastically scoffed the lot. I felt somewhat unreasonably angry with the bird and went and tied a fresh one on in a way that meant it couldn’t repeat the trick. I’m not letting a magpie beat me!

After a fairly busy June with its various activities, our next regular Business meeting will be 6th July – 7.15 for 7.30 pm at Baxter Church Rooms, Kidderminster. Some members have signed up for the ‘Race for Life’ at Worcester Racecourse on Sunday 16th July – in aid of and organised by Cancer Research UK. Please NOTE instead of our usual Supper Meeting on the third Thursday of the month we will be having our almost traditional Summer Outing which this year will be a guided tour around the Birmingham Repertory Theatre with a look behind the scenes. An Afternoon Tea organised by one of our members on Saturday 5th August for the ‘Meru Day of Action’ will provide a suitable end to all our summer ‘commitments’ and to the start of our summer break. All regular meetings will recommence in September.

An ABC of Ruskin Land will be on display in Bewdley Museum from the 1st July.
Ruskin in Wyre is a community-based project to tell the story of Ruskin Land in the Wyre Forest, given to John Ruskin's Guild of St George almost 150 years ago. The project seeks to deepen the links between the local community and the forest through a wide range of events and activities. Making – of all kinds and varieties – will be central to the project.
We will be asking visitors to the exhibition to share their favourite words to describe the forest so we can build a picture of community experiences of Wyre. The project is centred around St George’s Farm, do you remember Jack Bishop and family? Perhaps you camped there as a scout or guide? If you have family have connections with the forest, stories to tell of the past or you enjoy walking among the trees and appreciating the peace, please come and take part. We welcome drawings or photos of your words.

As we get older our bones become softer and it becomes more difficult to reach our feet. The Friends of Bewdley Museum are celebrating a success.
Their vice chair Penny Griffiths was awarded the Bewdley Town Council Thank you Award for services to the Community of Bewdley.
Penny was nominated by Councillor Stephen Clee for her hard work over several years with the Friends of Bewdley Museum who support the Museum through volunteering and donations. Penny was previously Chair of the group for over a decade and was involved at the time that the museum became free entry with visitor numbers growing from around 10,000 a year then, to currently over 170,000 per year. The award was presented by the Mayor, Councillor John Beeson, as one of his final duties as he finished his term

CHERRY FAIR 2017
This year, the Civic Society Cherry Fair, promoted jointly with Bewdley Museum, will be the week-end of 22nd-23rd July, the seventh such event since the ancient fair was revived in 2011.
The Civic Society display in the foyer of the Guildhall will be accompanied by other stalls and events organised by the Museum staff, hopefully offering something of interest for everyone as an enjoyable family occasion to begin the holiday season with, during the Saturday and Sunday, live music, adding interest and atmosphere to the celebration.
As usual a selection of different varieties of cherry for people to compare and enjoy will be demonstrated. The intention is to encourage more interest in and awareness of the many sorts and tastes available. Modern, commercially viable, methods of cherry growing mean that with increased consumer interest and demand, old varieties may be rescued, supply may increase and prices fall.
There will be young container-grown trees for sale at very reasonable prices, small enough to transport, suitable for gardens and presents. We hope to cover our costs, but any profits from the sale of trees will go to help the work of Bewdley Civic Society. In addition, at a separate stall, Museum staff will offer fresh cherries for sale, any profits helping to support the Museum.
So, come along in your thousands and enjoy a delightful afternoon, learn something about cherries and take away, if not a tree or a bag of cherries, a memory of delicious fruit and a renewed enthusiasm for cherries. 37

Bewdley Bridge Club provides a friendly environment to play duplicate bridge. We are committed to helping people enjoy club bridge at every level and meet on Wednesday evenings from 7pm until 10pm at the Elizabeth Mills Centre in Stourport-on-Severn.
Affiliated to the English Bridge Union (EBU), the club is the largest in Wyre Forest. We use pre-dealt hands and a modern electronic scoring system enabling results to be available immediately after play. Our accredited EBU teacher has been running classes for beginners for the last 5 years. The next beginner class starts in September 2017.

Thanks to the generosity of the people of Bewdley £2,126 has been sent to the Christian Aid Week house-to-house collections. This will be even more when the tax is claimed back from the government from those 88 people who gift-aided their contribution at no extra cost to themselves. The greatest thanks are due to the group of people who went house-to-house to collect in donations; three of whom handed in over £190 pounds from each of their collections. What stars they are! Thank you everyone for helping refugees world wide.

Himalayan Balsam Bash!
The Civic Society’s 3rd annual Balsam Bash is being extended this year and we should be delighted to see interested people come along and help.
This rather handsome but invasive plant is an extensive problem nationwide. An escapee from Victorian gardens, it has spread rapidly along river courses to the detriment of our native species.
The good news is that as it is an annual it can be successfully controlled if removed before it seeds. Hence a concerted annual attack will eventually control it, although this is a longterm project given its abundance!
Please come along and help whether you have an hour or a morning to spare. Clothing covering arms and legs is recommended (nettles) and gloves and stout footwear. Meet by the bridge at Severn Side South on the following dates… July 29th at 10am August 5,7,8,9,10 and 11 at 10am

New Town Leaflet and Map The Town Council have produced a new town visitor leaflet and map which is available from the Tourist Information Centre and will be distributed across the County. This new full colour map has been designed to be a little bit quirky and unique, moving away from a traditional street map. New Mayor of Bewdley During the Annual Meeting of Bewdley Town Council on Friday 12th May 2017, Councillor Mrs Anna Coleman was elected Mayor for 2017/2018. Councillor Mrs Coleman took over the role from Councillor John Beeson. Councillor Coleman said that she was "honoured and privileged" to be able to represent Bewdley as Mayor and thanked her fellow Town Councillors for electing her. The new Mayor will raise funds for the Friends of Riverside North Park and the local food bank operated by Bewdley churches during her mayoral year. During the meeting, Councillor Mrs Linda Candlin was elected as Deputy Mayor with the new Young Mayor of Bewdley, Louisa Coleman, also receiving her pendant.
Neighbourhood Plan Update Many thanks to those who completed the latest Neighbourhood Plan survey which produced around 600 responses. The results of the consultation are available at www.beinbewdley.org. The next stage of the process is for a draft plan to be produced. Carnival 2017 Many thanks are extended to Angie Pitt and the Carnival Committee for putting on a marvellous carnival this year. The Town Council were also proud to have contributed to the day by putting on the annual fireworks display on the Saturday night. To ensure that the carnival survives, new volunteers are sought.
