The Bridge is the community voice of Bewdley
It is free and delivered by volunteers to more than 4,600 homes every month Visit us at www.bewdleybridge.org.uk
Welcome to October’s edition of The Bridge.
Autumn is definitely in the air and in the pages of this month’s magazine. Turn to page 25 to find out what is happening at the Harvest Fair at Bewdley Museum and Jubilee Gardens and to page 17 to read something of the history of Harvest celebrations. Page 25 will also tell you about what is happening at the museum throughout October including the full programme of half-term activities for children. The revival of Riverside North Park has been one of the town’s recent success stories. Turn to page 11 to find out how the Friends of the park are bringing a little light into the dark nights.
Of course, the beginning of autumn means that thoughts are soon turning to Christmas. The popular Cards for Good Causes shop opens in St. George’s Hall towards the end of the month - details on page 11 - while on page 31 Elaine Barbour looks forward to Bewdley’s Annual Traidcraft Fair
October brings us the thirtieth Bewdley Festival and eight days of great entertainment. On page 41, Alastair Elliott anticipates some of the music on offer while on page 45 Dave Collins reminds us what daytime events are happening during the week. Bewdley celebrated its history in September at the town’s first Heritage Festival. Turn to the centre pages to see pictures of some of the events that took place.
Elsewhere in the magazine, Mary Sheriff-Mussett tells us on page 34 what makes fishing in Bewdley so popular and Margaret continues our Looking Back series opening the pages of Bridge magazines from twenty years ago.
Thank you to those who responded to an invitation on the This is Bewdley facebook page to send in your pictures. Each month we will share as many as we can.Keep sending them in!

“MADE IN THE MUSEUM” Artisan Group Harvest - A Season of Appreciation
The harvest is once again upon us and will be celebrated not only by many churches and farming communities across the land, but also by our own local museum here in Bewdley on the weekend of the 7th and 8th of October. But what are the origins of this popular festival?
The Celts once held a corn harvest celebration at the beginning of August, called Lughnasadh, in honour of their god, Lugh. When the Anglo Saxons arrived in Britain several centuries later, they too marked the corn harvest with a festival known as Hlafmas, meaning ‘loaf mass’, a word which gradually metamorphosed into the more familiar Lammas and, although it was initially adopted by the Roman church, it soon fell from favour as it had little to do with the life of Christ.
In 1843 however, everything changed, thanks to the Reverend Robert Hawker, vicar of Morwenstowe church in Cornwall. Eccentric he may have been, but when the harvests of the late 1830s failed, Hawker ensured his parishioners were fed. In 1842, however, the harvest was good and the authorities declared that special prayers should be recited in church. Hawker liked this idea and, the following year, decided to combine elements of Lughnasadh and Lammas into his Christian celebration, by bringing harvest produce into the church and giving thanks to God.
As we celebrate our harvest this year, perhaps we should spare a thought for both the Reverend Hawker and our more distant ancestors, each of whom have shaped the festival we have come to know and love. Carole Carlton – Mrs Darley’s Herbal, Bewdley Museum

Guide dog update
It was a joyous moment when I had confirmation a few weeks ago that my guide dog pup, Delphi, had qualified. At the end of the intensive training period where she learnt all the basic skills needed she was very carefully matched with a visually impaired partner. They then had a brief period of training together before fully qualifying as a partnership. Although I had been kept up to date on her progress it was still a very special moment!
Bewdley's other puppies, Millie and Luna, are on the brink of leaving Gabi and Roni to head off for the start of their new guide dog careers. Meanwhile we are all keeping our fingers crossed for the possibility of a Bewdley guide dog litter from the beautiful brood bitch Peggy who now permanently lives with Roni.
These amazing dogs allow blind and visually impaired people the freedom that most of us take for granted. They give their owners the confidence to leave their homes, keep them safe and are a constant loving companion. The cost to support a guide dog from birth to retirement is £56,800. Public donations are vital to keep this service running so, if you're able, please donate and support your local puppy walking group at their fund raising events.. We are hoping to hold an open afternoon in December at Wribbenhall Parish Rooms where you will be able to meet the pups and find out more about our work. Thank you to all who support us. Frances Glen

First Steps with Ruskin
Community News
Ever wondered who John Ruskin was? Why he was a celebrity in the Victorian period? Why there is a Ruskin Land in Bewdley? Why someone who was born 200 years ago is still seen as a significant cultural influence? Why Ruskin featured in Forest, River and Royals? You are invited to learn the answers to these questions and more on Saturday 7th October. ‘First Steps with Ruskin’ is a one-day workshop presented by the Guild of St George, the charity founded by Ruskin. Clive Wilmer (Master of the Guild and a Fellow of Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge) will introduce Ruskin and place him in a wider context; Dominika Wielgopolan (a PhD student at Manchester Metropolitan University writing about Ruskin Land) will offer a history of Ruskin in Bewdley; Rachel Dickinson (Director for Education of the Guild and Principal Lecturer at Man Met Uni) will discuss Ruskin’s relevance today. The middle of the day will feature lunch and then an enjoyable guided walk with John and Linda Iles(a Guild Director and tenants of Uncllys Farm) to explore Ruskin Land. The day will draw to a close with Jenny Robbins (a Director of both the Guild and the Wyre Community Land Trust) sharing different ways you can become involved with Ruskin’s ideas. On a mercifully dry evening last month, a big crowd assembled on Severnside North to watch d listen to a thrilling depiction of the history of our town. The “stage” was across the river at he rowing club so that the coloured lights and images were wonderfully reflected in the water. usic and words specially composed by Bewdley’s own Jim Ineson were sung and played mainly by home-grown singers and instrumentalists, to accompany a narrative of how the town grew om a forest clearing to the bustling place it now is. The “lumiére” part of the Son et Lumiére was provided by images and photos on a giant screen. was a great evening’s entertainment, but also a chance to reflect on how the past has shaped he present; how the town’s fortunes have waxed and waned, and how all of us are shaped and changed by the Forest, River and Royals. Saturday 7th is when we get to celebrate the achievement of all the children who took part in our Animal Agents Summer Reading Challenge; our medal ceremony for finishers is at 11 am. It's a proud moment for children, parents and library staff alike. A big thank you to everyone who took part! Kay Sanderson He based the looks of George Smiley on an office colleague, his father went to prison and he taught Prince Michael of Kent. Just some of the numerous facts we found out about the crime writer John Le Carré in a live stream from the Royal Festival Hall on the Thursday of Bewdley Book Week. In a fascinating two hours Le Carré allowed us into his secret world of spying, mixing biographical details of his time with MI5 and MI6 with details of how as an author he created his fictional character "George Smiley". Sitting in the Hall it was amazing to think how lucky we were to be watching a sold out live event which was being streamed to major cinemas throughout the U.K.and at a fraction of the cost!It was a great evening and was £10 very well spent. Looking Back - 1996
This was the year of Dolly the sheep, Take That split up and disbanded, Greenwich was selected as the site for the Millennium Dome, and the BBC showed a new programme called Changing Rooms. Here in Bewdley the Town Council put up three new Bewdley signs at town boundaries, you could go to a talk on Summer Scarf Tying in Wribbenhall, and the magazine had a half-price voucher for Bewdley Museum (“A Surprise Round Every Corner!”). The March edition asked, “Do you know what goes on in Bewdley on a Friday Night?”. The answer was that until1996, young people met in the carpark. Now they had a room in St George’s Hall and a club called The Basement. And later in the year the Town Council put cycle racks by the library and lifebelts along Severnside. We Bewdley townspeople do like a bit of excitement in our town!

Sshh! Say it quietly, but Christmas is fast approaching. It’s a great time of year, but can be busy, busy. So why not get ahead and begin your preparations early at the Traidcraft Christmas Fair, held as usual in St Anne’s Church on Saturday 4th November from 10am to 4pm.
We’ll have a great range of Christmassy products for you to browse and buy. Beautifully crafted gifts from our producer partners in the developing world are made in small workshops or at home, keeping vanishing traditional skills alive and often from natural and recycled materials. There’s a wide range of Christmas cards, including handmade paper and embroidered cards for that special person in your life.
There’ll be lots of everyday goodies too – nuts, dried fruit, biscuits, mueslis, tea, coffee, chocolate- as well as special Christmas food.
We’ll be serving fairly traded tea and coffee all day, with homemade cakes, and offering light lunches too.
Why not pick up a catalogue from St Anne’s (we’re open from 10am-2pm Tuesday to Saturday) to see the range of Traidcraft products.
So whether you’re looking for bamboo socks, a beautiful duvet cover, a new handbag or a jar of jam, the Traidcraft Fair is the place to be on November 4th. Elaine Barbour

Fishing in Bewdley
What could be nicer than sitting by the river on a misty autumn morning chasing the elusive double figure barbel? Readers may not realise that this part of the River Severn is famous for barbel fishing and we have anglers who descend upon us year after year from all over the country, some regular visitors and others here to experience their first barbel catch ever. We hear accents from as far afield as Scotland, Newcastle, Liverpool and Cornwall.
The anglers bring a lot of trade to the town using the hotels, shops, cafés, camp sites and car parks and, of course, the pubs. It’s part of the magic to meet up with other fishermen to brag about the day’s catch. In July the Kidderminster and District Anglers held a three day festival here with over 80 anglers fishing for big prize money, the overall match won by a local angler.
Once the river season closes in March, anglers - both men and the growing numbers of women enjoying the sport - move on to the many commercial pools in the area, once again helping the local economy. Warmer winters are certainly helping the sport.
Bewdley Tackle has now been open for 6 years. We are a family run business, open 7 days a week, and always ready to offer advice and encouragement to beginners. We particularly look forward to hearing about catches, even the fishermen’s tales and exaggerated results.

Charity Concert Success
Singing on stage at Birmingham's prestigious Symphony Hall is something many people can only dream of, but for members of Bewdley's Got 2 Sing contemporary choir it was a reality. They formed part of the 500 strong 'Got 2 Sing' group of choirs which packed the stage on Sunday 3rd September at that internationally renowned concert venue for their 'One Voice' concert, raising over £8,300 for the Worcestershire Breast Unit Haven charity. The 2000 plus audience was treated to a full programme of contemporary songs, opening with 'You're the Voice' through to a spectacular performance of 'One Voice' before ending with a traditional flag-waving 'Proms' finale which included 'Land of Hope and Glory.’
Beth Dunn, founder and director of Got 2 Sing, was delighted with the success of the evening. "It was a superb concert on every level. We've been inundated with messages praising the choir for their professional, polished performance and we were delighted with the amount raised for the charity. As a non-auditioned choir it was simply incredible to hear everyone singing their hearts out on stage and what a fantastic sound they made. It was truly amazing!" 40

The Big Draw - ‘Ruskin in Wyre’ Project
The Big Draw is the World’s largest drawing festival and is celebrated throughout October. Supported by the Guild of St. George, this international celebration of drawing has grown from one day in October 2000 to an annual month-long festival of drawing across the UK and the world. Being based in the beautiful surroundings of the Wyre Forest has many benefits, including endless supplies of inspiration. With such a perfect setting the Wyre Community Land Trust decided to take part in The Big Draw for the first-time last year.Visitors brought along their creative side and got the opportunity to draw whatever inspired them including a variety of natural objects, from animal skulls to acorns and leaves to feathers. We are celebrating this wonderful festival again this year as part of the ‘Ruskin in Wyre’ Project.
'Long Lines' - drawing on the forest floor For families, and fun loving grown ups, come and work with artists from B arts. We will make charcoal, (and for people who can stay longer wood cut prints) to create large scale drawings on the floor of the forest. We will be working with charcoal, using pigments and mark making materials from the forest; twigs, clay, moss, bark. Get prepared to be messy!

Thanks for the Bewdley Balsam Bash 2017
Himalayan Balsam, a Victorian garden escapee is rife particularly along the river. It stifles native plants and, being an annual, leaves the banks exposed to the elements in winter and prone to erosion. It is the grey squirrel of the ghetto horticultural world! This year between late July and early August, groups of volunteers cleared most of the growth from the readily accessible parts of the river bank up and down from Bewdley Bridge on both sides of the river. Thank you to those who were able to spare some time to help. It's an ongoing project so will become an annual event. Hope to see you again, with friends, next year. Steve Bent

Oh my golly gosh, what a Bewdley Book Week that was! Hundreds of people turned out to enjoy events that had been organised throughout the week and there was certainly something for everyone.
Local authors Fen Flack, Rosemary Winnall and Anne and Lizzie Hill brought us history, naturally, and natural history. The Hop Pole Inn was packed with literary quizzers who had their taste buds tickled with lashings of lasagne.
And just hang on a minute, there’s so much more to John Challis than playing Boycie in Only Fools and Horses. After having upped sticks and moved out of London, he bought Wigmore Abbey and proceeded to renovate both the dilapidated property and the neglected gardens. With his one-off talk, just for us, he was witty, informative and charming.
Good gracious me, I’d never have guessed that one man could have an encyclopaedic knowledge of music in the way that Barney Hoskins has. This top journalist spoke about Woodstock and the events around the famous festival, inspiring many of us to go and reacquaint ourselves with the bands we used to enjoy in the Sixties.
Would you believe it, we were lucky enough to have Dinah Jefferies back in town, talking about her latest novel. Just days after her previous visit, her novel shot to the top of the Sunday Times bestseller list, so we’re hoping that the Bewdley magic can work again. Blow me, we virtually had John le Carré with us, too.
Bewdley Rotary Club joined us for the presentation of the Schools Short Story Competition prizes and gave us the chance to congratulate our talented youngsters.
Crumbs alive, the evening with the Unmumsy Mum, Sarah Turner, was a lively event! The hall was packed with mums (and the odd dad) out to have a good time and Sarah’s honest stories about the ridiculous moments of motherhood didn’t disappoint. She was interviewed by Rachel New and the two egged on each other, to the delight of the crowd.
Rachel was with us, the following afternoon, to host the ever-popular Tea and Cakes event. She was in conversation with the successful authors Milly Johnson and Cathy Bramley who so obviously both enjoyed each other’s company and interacting with the audience. All with tea and cakes! Could it get any better?
Well, the last event of the week certainly was a highlight. An evening with Brian Patten was everything that we hoped it would be. Returning to Bewdley for the first time since our first festival, thirty years ago, he read a mixture of new and favourite poems.
Authors throughout the week were full of praise and expressed their pleasure in the lovely audiences we’d attracted. Now, I can’t believe it. It’s all over for another year. Fergus Allinson 39

Behind the Baton
October brings the excitement of the Bewdley Festival to town including some awesome musical events. As a child of the 80’s, I’m particularly excited about seeing T’Pau in a rare full band performance on Thursday 12th. In symmetry with the Festival’s 30th Anniversary, it was October 1987 that saw “China in your Hand” shoot to No1 in the UK for 5 weeks. T’Pau are still a great live act, still performing at large Festivals and wowing audiences with that strong rock sound coupled with Carol Decker’s rasping vocal. If you like that 80’s rock vibe with a quality twist, then this will be a great night and for rock fans, the Festival keeps on giving as Tom Robinson arrives the following day in original 4 piece format as part of a brief tour to perform the legendary “Power in the Darkness” album. Once again, I can guarantee a great night of rock which I suspect will have the whole Mercure jumping. These are two unmissable gigs for Rock fans – what a chance to see these bands so close up and tickets are still available via the new Festival online booking system or at the TIC.
In a slightly different genre, I am particularly looking forward to this year’s Classical Concert to be held in St Anne’s on the afternoon of Sunday 8th October. In a nod to the Festival’s 30th anniversary where a concert was performed by local groups, Bewdley’s own “Festival Voices” along with the “Bewdley Baroque Soloists” will perform a concert of music written for special occasions. Much of this will of course be work commissioned or used at Royal Occasions and will include Handel’s famous Coronation Anthem: “Zadok the Priest” and his “Music for the Royal Fireworks”. The concert will also feature famous works by Parry including another Coronation Anthem: “I was Glad”. I’m also delighted that we will also be performing a “Festal Te Deum” written for the first ever Bewdley Festival by Graham Price. It’s great to be bringing this work back to life and re-living the events of that very first Festival. Whilst the performers are drawn from the local area, I can assure you this will be a high quality concert featuring some of the very talented professional musicians who live and work in the area and the programme will feature music that should appeal to all – even if you are not a regular classical music listener.
Finally, I must squeeze in a “congratulations” to everyone involved in the Son et Lumiere “Forest, River and Royals” and thanks to all who came and watched. It was a real privilege to be involved. Transition Bewdley Repair Café
Saturday October 21st 10.00 - 2.00 St. George’s Hall Bewdley After a brief summer break our volunteer repairers were ready and raring to get started again in September and dealt with the backlog of items in need of repair. We look forward to what October’s café might bring. We have been contacted recently by “Ricochet”, the award-winning independent television production company who were commissioned by BBC 2 to make the “Repair Shop” TV series aired earlier this year. They have now been commissioned to produce another series in time for Christmas. The series follows a team of passionate and skilled craftspeople who fix, repair and breathe new life into objects brought in by members of the public. They are looking for family heirlooms and objects that have community value that have fallen into disrepair. For example: memorial plaques, eroded statues, snapped weather vanes, broken sun dials, cracked gargoyles, fading carvings, or antique village and pub signs. For their Christmas Special they would particularly like objects of special significance at Christmas time. A ragged teddy bear given to a grandparent decades ago, a favourite train set a parent would like to pass on to their child on Christmas morning, anything of personal sentimental value or importance to a community can be repaired and preserved for generations to come. The team is especially eager to restore a sleigh that could decorate a town at Christmas time. Their team work side by side in a beautiful barn in the West Sussex countryside fixing, repairing and breathing new life into objects brought in by members of the public. They are a group of experts drawn from different disciplines such as furniture repairers, metal workers, mechanics, ceramicists, clock makers, picture conservationists, up-cyclers, restorers and fabricators of every ilk. To find out more go to www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b08l581p. If you have an object you’d like their help with, please get in touch with them at repair@ricochet.co.uk or call them on 01273 224829. Meanwhile in Bewdley, our volunteers offer many of the same skills in the more urban setting of St. George’s Hall. We are not concerned as to whether the objects are photogenic or unusual. We do get our fair share of items that are of sentimental value but as well as our regular customers who prefer to get help with repairing items rather than throwing them away in order to help the environment, we would like, for social and economic reasons, to attract more people who perhaps cannot afford to replace broken household devices. For more information about Bewdley Repair Café or to volunteer to help, please contact John Rhymer 01299 403424 49

Piano Recital with a Difference!
Bewdley Methodist Church in High Street continues its series of “Music in the Chapel” concerts with a piano recital on Saturday 28th October at 2.30 pm. Distinguished musician Andrew Crabtree will be taking his audience on a musical journey through time, which starts before the piano was even invented. For over 300 years the Harpsichord was the favourite keyboard instrument in palaces and grand houses throughout Europe. However, in the 17th century it was soon to be replaced by a newcomer. Why was the piano invented? Why was it called the “piano?” With these intriguing questions the journey will begin, discovering surprising changes along the way. From Handel to Scott Joplin we will hear, through its music, “The Story of the Piano.” Tickets for the concert cost £8, including light refreshments from Mike Dernie 01299 400284 mikedernie@aol.com or Neil Sollom 07780 650491 neilsollom@btinternet.com. 51

Bewdley Town Council News October 2017
Neighbourhood Plan The Town Council have looked again at the timetable for delivering the Neighbourhood Plan. This is because Wyre Forest District Council’s Local Plan timetable has been revised and this will not be adopted until 2019. The Neighbourhood Plan must be broadly in line with the Local Plan and so to ensure that both Plans are as up to date as they can possibly be, WFDC have asked the Town Council to delay publishing the “official” draft Plan until after the Local Plan has been adopted. This makes sense to ensure that our Neighbourhood Plan gets the maximum amount of weight in the planning system by being the most “up to date”. This will also allow for any changes or developments that come from the Local Plan review process which is currently ongoing to be addressed in the Neighbourhood Plan. The Town Council will still share a draft of the Plan as it stands based on all the public consultations and the work carried out by Council officers. This does mean that our communities will have ample time to respond to the draft Plan and for the Council to make any amendments before the “formal” process of adopting the Plan begins.
Police and Crime Commissioner – Fire and Rescue Service Consultation At its meeting on the 4th September, Town Councillors considered the proposals from the Police and Crime Commissioner, John Campion, to take on responsibility for the Fire and Rescue Service. Having heard from Mr Campion at an informal meeting in August, the Council agreed to support the proposals. However, the vote was not unanimous and some Councillors had reservations about the suitability of a Police Commissioner taking on fire services. The support shown for the proposals was mostly around the potential cost savings in back office functions, and the benefits that closer collaboration between the police and fire services could bring.
Christmas 2017 The organisation of this year’s Victorian Christmas in Bewdley event is now in full flow. As last year, the event will feature a main stage with local community groups and music acts performing, a street market, Father Christmas, horse and carriage rides and lots more new activities. To book a stall at the market, please contact LSD Promotions on 01384 877336. Local businesses and community groups can receive special rates on stalls (subject to availability). Future Town Council Meetings Town Council meetings are held at The Guildhall at 7.00pm on the first Monday of each month unless stated otherwise (Please note change of time). The next meetings are: 2nd October and 6th November 2017. Meeting Agendas and Minutes are posted on town notice boards and are available on the Town Council’s website www.bewdleytowncouncil.org.

October in the Forest
Landowners (including gardeners) in and near the forest tend to find out that they are supplying the local wildlife with food. This may be by choice: at Uncllys Farm we get through sacks of sunflower seed and peanuts for the bird feeders at an amazing rate. These attract tits, Nuthatches, Goldfinches and Great Spotted Woodpeckers. We have a record number of juvenile Blue Tits around the house which, not content with the peanuts, have been pecking at the paintwork of the window frames, damaging the new putty/paintwork and competing with the cockerel to wake us early in the morning. (In October the sun will rise just after 7am so we hope for a longer sleep).
We have a traditional cherry orchard and a few old damson trees, and newer plantings of apples, cherries and plums. Cropping varies from year to year, but the trees always supply food for wildlife in the form of nectar from the blossom, ripe fruit and living and dead plant material for herbivores of all sizes. This month the last of the apples will be harvested. A few such as Bardsey and Captain Tom (a cooker) were ready in early August, and I had to be on the alert to get them before they rotted on the trees or were eaten by wasps or Hornets. Since then the Herefordshire Russet, Worcester Pearmain, Bramleys and sundry others which lost their labels have gradually ripened. We planted many trees of Scotch Bridget because it was used successfully in the Teme Valley in the past and it has proved to be a heavy cropper and resistant to disease. It isn’t a particularly juicy apple but forms the main constituent of our juice which is pressed, pasteurised and bottled for us by Richard Styles at Lower Blackstone Farm.
Our fields are fenced to keep sheep and cattle in but are not high enough to keep Fallow Deer out. When we moved to Uncllys we were surprised to discover that all the grazing animals we have had on the farm (and I include the pigs) seem to prefer to browse the branches of trees and shrubs rather than eat grass. Chickens, on the other hand, surprised me by the amount of grass they eat, given the chance. All our young trees have to be protected with tree guards but still sustain damage at times, especially when the weight of fruit bends the branches down to reachable height.
The photo shows a sheep looking particularly guilty (‘sheepish’?) when I caught him munching both apples and branches. We have found over the years that deer are cheeky and persistent but I hope that at least our defences around the garden will continue to be successful. I’m slightly worried about the encroachment of Muntjac Deer which are smaller and can squeeze under stock fencing quite easily and also recent sightings of rabbits on my lawn. Maybe the days of my beloved flowers and vegetables are numbered. Linda Iles
