The Bridge November 2017
My First Job
I entered the world of work at 16 after my headteacher advised, ”You don’t do well in exams. Much better to leave now and find a job”. This less-than-reassuring vote of confidence in my ability was not altogether true as I did get quite a few GCE’s, but I was persuaded not to stay on in the sixth form. Instead I got a five-year apprenticeship with the Atomic Energy Research Establishment at Harwell, near where I lived. Here I had a thorough grounding in all things engineering. One year I, along with fifty other apprentices were accommodated in Weymouth. I remember starting every day with a half hour’s P.E. outside before breakfast - I believe this is part of new educational thinking these days, proving there’s nothing new in education. My high point was becoming Apprentice of The Year; I still have my certificate somewhere.
This wonderful five years included a management course at an Oxford university for a week. In that time I went to Filton airfield; I sat in the wooden mock up of Concorde; visited Clarkes shoes at their Street factory, and even went to see Henry V at Stratford! I’m not sure why Shakespeare was considered a useful part of an engineering qualification, but I’m sure it made all the difference.
After the apprenticeship had been completed I worked at Harwell for two years before deciding that engineering was not going to be my future. I applied to a teacher training college and eventually became one of the few headteachers who could make and design a printed circuit and work in metal to a tolerance of 2000in. Neither of which ability came in handy in the classroom Tony Redstall

This month I’m Saying Hello. A simple-enough action; I see someone coming towards me; I pass them with a smiley “hello” and go on my way. Well, not all the time. Having just got back from a trip to Birmingham reminded me that passing a person you don’t actually know and saying “Hello” isn’t actually universally practised; if I tried it while walking down Corporation Street I would probably be ignored, cause the person to stop and stare in amazement, get a slap or elicit a very rude response. It’s just not done in a large conurbation. I suppose, because it’s impractical on a busy city street, there’s nothing to be done there. Mind you, I’ve had some very jolly conversations in M & S while waiting to be served, so it’s not completely out of the question. If you want to try it, just meet the eye of the man standing by the woman holding a packet of knickers and a nice blouse, say “Never mind; you’re nearly at the end of your suffering”, or something to that effect and I can guarantee the start of a gentle exchange.
There’s another thing that stops the Saying Hello process. You really need to be an adult. While you are a child, there is no need to say hello. You just get on with it. If you’re a boy you thump the other boy or bounce off him with a hip or shoulder. If you’re a girl you stare, ask “What’s your name?” or get in one of those lovely little-girl huddles. The teenage years are even less likely to be Saying-Hello-productive. That age makes addressing a stranger as terrifying as being seen by a parent without your clothes on, and Saying Hello to a young person in the street elicits a panicked lowering of the eyes. (I speak from my own experience here, you understand.) Not that they will be looking at you anyway, since there will be something electronic to stare at instead. No, King/Queen of the Saying Hello is a Bewdley person (probably looks vaguely familiar but you don’t know why) of a Certain Age who still practises that rare thing, walking into town and is very happy to swap a greeting.
Do you realise that now I’ve written this, I’m in honour bound to Say Hello to everyone I meet? Please feel free to say hello back. Margaret

1st Wribbenhall Brownies went on Pack Holiday
I was pleased to be invited to go on Brownie Pack Holiday this year to oversee cooking. As an ‘oldie’ guide leader, this was a new and very different experience for me. So in August three leaders, a Guide and eleven 8-10 year olds spent five happy days at the Mills Pack Holiday House at Worcestershire Girlguiding’s own camp site at Blackmore, from where there is an excellent view of the Malvern Hills. The weather was kind so we were able to play outdoors each day.
The holiday theme was the Circus. A nice man came to teach circus skills and by the end of Tuesday afternoon there were some very proficient unicyclists, jugglers and plate spinners. The girls did some excellent craft work and all went home with three juggling balls they had made in their goody bags as well as their Circus Skills and other badges. Four girls gained their Cook’s badge and I was awarded one as well.
The United Christingle Service
will be held this year on 3rd December at All Saints’ Church, 4.30pm.
Prior to the service from 2.30pm crafts for children will be held in Wribbenhall Parish room. All Very Welcome

What is Pewter?
This is a question I am often asked, so let me share some brief facts with you. Pewter has a long history, with the oldest piece found in Egypt around 1450BCE. Historically pewter contained lead, but this changed in 1974 when lead was removed. The constituents of the pewter I use are: 92% Tin, 2% Copper - to raise the temperature and make it malleable and 6% Antimony to work as a hardener. Pewter is however, considered a valuable metal in its own right.
Bewdley was once a renowned centre for pewter with a flourishing trade when it was a thriving port and supplied 50% of the pewter in Britain. Today, the gallery at Bewdley Museum displays pewter pieces and the history of the trade.
Pewter is a soft metal, very tactile and versatile and is presently enjoying a revival. This is due to consumers and crafters rediscovering its glowing beauty as it can be polished to a high silver patina, lending itself to contemporary jewellery styles, modern utensils and home or garden décor. Age old skills are being kept alive by pewter artisans creating decorative and practical items from their own moulds for everyday use and it has therefore become accessible to all.
Many processes can be applied to pewter to create different results including: Casting, Etching, Embossing, Turning, Pressing, Fabricating, Soldering, Cutting, Polishing, Rolling, Finishing, Oxidising, Stamping and Engraving. Pewter also benefits from not rusting or tarnishing, just a soapy water wash and a soft cloth buff will keep a lustrous sheen.

During the first week of October – under the auspices of our UK Programme Action Committee - a number of our club members carried out a local survey to gauge the level of public awareness of the issue of ‘Human Trafficking and Modern Day Slavery’ across the UK. The data collected will then be analysed and the results publicised in due course.
Our next fundraising event is on Sunday 12th November at 7pm at Baxter Church Hall when local war historian Mark Baldwin, who had enthralled the audiences before with his presentations on the Enigma Machine and the Female Agents of the SEO, will talk on “The Invasion of the Channel Isles in WWII”. Tickets £8 including a glass of wine and nibbles with proceeds going to charities supporting War Widows and/or injured female soldiers.
The speaker at our next month’s Supper Meeting on Thursday 16th November, 7pm at La Brasserie, will be Jane Allen, a renowned national and international leadership developer and coach, who is local to Tenbury and also involved in local community projects. For more details about our meetings, the club and its activities, please do contact us: Tel. 01299 266101 or email: kidderminstersorop@gmail.com website: http://sigbi.org/kidderminster-and-district or Facebook: Soroptimists Kidderminster

Transition Bewdley Repair Café
We continue to get many customers attending the Repair Cafes. Nearly half of them are bringing garden tools and other implements for sharpening, so we are seeking extra volunteers who can share the work of sharpening, which has become a non-stop activity for our regular sharpening expert Peter Whittle.
As for other items, we never quite know what to expect. Amongst the more unusual items in the last few months was a ceramic poppy that had formed part of the display at The Tower of London. It had been broken and the owner was delighted when Linda Iles was not only able to glue it back together but also to show her how to carry out her own repairs to broken ceramics. I think a box of sand and blu-tak were involved in holding the pieces in position while the glue set.
Some customers, however, feel confident enough to fit the spare part themselves having received some coaching from one of our repairers. Indeed we want to encourage anyone working on their own repair or crafting projects to feel free to bring them along to the Repair Café to work on them alongside our repairers and ask for advice or assistance as and when they need it. Some people who have done this, have subsequently joined our regular team of volunteers. The next Repair Café is on: Saturday 18th November 10am – 2pm at St. George’s Hall.

At the end of September Bewdley turned out en masse to cheer on the hundreds of cyclists who took part in the hundred mile trip round the West Midlands. The town received many appreciative comments from the cyclists, who were given such a warm welcome as they tackled our hilly town.

A Day In My Life
I’m Keira and I’m ten years old. My mum and me have taken these photos to make a record of A Day In My Life. It’s just an ordinary day at the end of October. I wonder what I’ll think of it when I’m grown up?
21
19 Time for bed!
18
After my busy day I can watch some TV.
When we get back mum cooks the tea and when dad gets home we all sit down together
7
This is me and my brother having breakfast. I’ve got my school bag ready.
8 15 16
I walk to school with my mum and my brother Billy.
After school today I’m doing Ju jitsu at the leisure centre so I get changed and mum drives me there.
School’s done for the day. Time to come home. That’s me by the notice board
A New Sport
I think some of us in our road might have invented a new sport. Mum’s friend Helena has some very energetic dogs that she exercises in the forest. She also likes running. One day our two families were in the forest when we had a great idea. What about fastening the dogs’ leads to a harness which we’d wear, then running with the dog?
We fixed a point - the first time it was the Tanners Hill road - then ran to see who could get there first. I can’t remember who won the first race, but now we often go out after school with the dogs, fix our finishing line then run. Often people want to know what we’re doing and some have joined in. We decided we’d call our new sport Canirunning.
So if you see a red blur in the forest in the early evening it might be me canirunning! Archie Mills-Smith
What will this winter bring? I miss those frosty days of winter!

Looking Back
Our peek into the past this month features 1991. In the wider wold recession was biting, the new M40 linked the West Midlands to London, Poll Tax protests grew, Freddie Mercury died, and girls were allowed to become Scouts.
Here in Bewdley, there was an appeal for fit men over 5ft 6in to become Part-time Firefighters, (“You will, of course be paid well for your time and commitment”), Mr Armstrong was appointed as Mr Wear’s successor as Head Teacher of St Anne’s Middle School, the Citizens Advice Bureau told us how to change our name and St Anne’s Choir went to Vellmar and looked at how reunification had changed the town. The accompanying photo is a little fuzzy but do tell us if you’re one of those 1991 choristers!

The Distribution of the Bridge to the west of the River
Our church copy of Bridge deliverers has become out of date and Pauline Lowe has kindly offered to help me to reorganise the distribution of the Bridge.
There will be some forms on the Bridge table, under the church tower, if preferred or email me on janet@ mann-family.co.uk OR phone me on 01299 400794. Some initial thoughts-
Deliverers are very stoical and persistent and continue through all kinds of crises like overwork and incapacitation. I'm very grateful for this. What could be helpful would be if some new people would be willing to collect copies from the church and deliver just to their cul de sac or local area of road. I email people when the Bridge arrives. The average number of copies that people deliver is about 50, which is the number that can be carried at one time, without using the car. However some volunteers do a lot more. Any number is useful, as long as it feels manageable to the person concerned.
Keeping a list of potential volunteers sounds like a good idea, but in practice it doesn't seem to work. However a list of deliverers who are prepared to step in and do a few extra in their own area, where there is illness for example, would be very welcome. Where there is a permanent vacancy on a patch, we can put a note into copies on this patch, asking for someone else to come forward. Any comments or suggestions welcome. Thank you in advance, Janet Mann.
The Children's Society
The local committee is most grateful for your generous donation of £500 to swell its funds for this year: thank you. After emptying the boxes this year we are able to send £2,129.05 to headquarters to help with the work for children in difficulties. Extraordinarily this was just 2p short of the total for 2016. Can we top it next year? If you have not got a box, I have plenty and each one belongs to someone special. If you would like one, please contact Susan Price on 01299 402199 Live Wyres is a social club for single people. We meet in pubs around the area and hold dances and other events in a range of venues from hotels to village halls. Wheels For The World Event The World Health Organisation reports an estimated 1% of the world’s population, or just over 65 million people, need a wheelchair. Many people in many countries do not have the money or opportunity to buy one. “Wheels for the World” is a programme of the Christian charity “Through the Roof” and has worked over 20 years restoring and distributing previously used wheelchairs. This practical expression of God’s love continues to give disabled people independence. On Saturday 18th November at 3pm we invite you to come along to Bewdley Baptist Church and find out more about this amazing project. There will be films, a buffet and a quiz. Tickets at £4 each are available from Bev & Mark on 01299 823505 or by ringing the church office in the week on 01299 403267. There will be an opportunity to make a donation to support the work of the charity.

Bewdley Town Council News November 2017 Christmas 2017
The organisation of this year’s Victorian Christmas in Bewdley event is now in full flow. As last year, the event will feature a main stage with local community groups and music acts performing, a street market, Father Christmas, horse and carriage rides and lots more new activities. To book a stall at the market, please contact LSD Promotions on 01384 877336. Local businesses and community groups can receive special rates on stalls (subject to availability). Neighbourhood Plan
As I write this, the Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group will be recommending to the Council that we press ahead with our Neighbourhood Plan as scheduled, despite not being able to allocate the preferred sites in Wribbenhall. WFDC’s Local Plan Review is going to take too long and it may even be 2020 before we can move forward with the Plan if we leave the Green Belt sites in. This is because only the local planning authority can adjust Green Belt boundaries through a review. WFDC have advised that they are still supportive of the three sites in Wribbenhall in the Local Plan, subject to final inspection and adoption. However, nothing is set in stone, of course. The objectives and policies contained in the Neighbourhood Plan (even without the site allocations) are robust, relevant and important in protecting and conserving our town’s unique character and history. They also set out the expectations of developers in respecting and enhancing Bewdley’s open spaces, areas of recreation and landscape character. You may well have seen a copy of the draft Plan by now, but if not, check www.beinbewdley.org for the latest updates.
New Gateway Signs
The Town Council are installing two new “welcome to Bewdley” signs on the approaches to Bewdley from Kidderminster and from Leominster. They are designed to be vibrant and will depict images of Bewdley whilst welcoming visitors to our “historic riverside town”. It is hoped the signs will be installed shortly and are being supplied by the Royal British Legion who employ ex-service personnel to manufacture road and rail signs and equipment. Future Town Council Meetings Town Council meetings are held at The Guildhall at 7.00pm on the first Monday of each month unless stated otherwise (Please note change of time). The next meetings are: 6th November 2017 and 4th December 2017. Meeting Agendas and Minutes are posted on town notice boards and are available on the Town Council’s website www.bewdleytowncouncil.org.

November in the Forest
The large numbers of ladybirds trying to get into our house in recent weeks remind me that many creatures are going into hibernation now. The one which most readily springs to mind is the hedgehog, so familiar but so beleaguered now. Please do remember to check your bonfire piles on firework night for sleeping hogs or, better still, only build your fire just before you light it. Personally I always start a bonfire on clear ground and add material to it, so there’s no danger of cooking a spiny friend. This is a wonderful time of year for woodland walks. Last autumn I had an afternoon visit from some youngsters belonging to the local Worcestershire Wildlife Trust Watch Group, and we set out from Uncllys Farm to look for seedling oaks in the forest and gather acorns to grow the next generation of trees. I potted up the acorns and left them to over-winter in the vegetable garden, hoping for a good showing of little shoots by the spring. On the same day we also collected berries from the Wild Service Tree whose multiple stems guard the gateway from the chicken run into the woods and whose beautiful leaves turn golden yellow at this time of year. The fruits, which are shown in the photo and which once used to be used to flavour beer, are like bunches of tiny brown apples and I left them indoors for a few days to ripen and go mushy. Then I was able to squeeze out the seeds (one to three per berry), wash them and mix them with grit. Then they were left out of doors all winter in a container that would allow them to stay damp but not waterlogged.
In the spring I inspected the pot of Wild Service Tree seeds, not expecting much to be happening, but found about 40 of them germinating! I happily potted them all on. Encouraged by their success I went to investigate the acorns but, oh dear, not only was there no growth but there was no sign of the 30 or so acorns at all. Could I hear the squirrels laughing? This autumn I will repeat the exercise, trying to replicate the success of the one and taking precautions to prevent the other becoming an easy meal for my naughty neighbours.
As I go about the woods the bare trees allow me to keep an eye open for deer. The rut is over now and it’s time for them to get ready for the colder weather by feeding up on acorns and beech mast and growing their thick winter coats. At the other end of the scale, the cooler and wetter weather makes it a good time to look out for mosses and liverworts, recovering and flourishing after the summer’s drier weather. The Bryophyte Group will be coming for a day’s exploration of the tiny world of pocket mosses, earworts and pincushions. Last year they recorded over 30 species within a few hundred yards of our door and I look forward to their fearless expedition into Lilliput armed only with notebooks and hand lenses. Linda Iles
