The Bridge December 2017

Bewdley Festival 2017

The combination of a great programme, the introduction of online ticket sales and the support of new sponsors and partners (drp, mfg Solicitors and Wright Solicitors) has resulted in Bewdley Festival’s 30th anniversary year being a great success. Many shows sold out and it was noticeable that there were many new faces along with the regulars. Roger McGough opened proceedings with a great show, returning following his appearance at the first Festival in 1988. Other highlights included Jan Ravens and Sara Pascoe who had the audience roaring in the aisles, Lesley Smith who frightened everyone as Boudica and Max Keen who explored Prince Rupert of the Rhine in full costume with another tongue in cheek performance. The Tom Robinson Band celebrated 40 years of 2 4 6 8 Motorway with a storming set, T’Pau, featuring the voice of Carol Decker, celebrated their 30th anniversary too, and 10cc’s Graham Gouldman ‘Heart Full of Songs’ was met with a standing ovation from the sell-out crowd. The Classical Concert at St Anne’s Church was described by many as the best yet. Pete Waterman strode around the stage at the Heath Hotel with tales and anecdotes from his fascinating career, Jenni Murray celebrated 30 years at Radio 4’s ‘Woman’s Hour’ and art historian Dan Cruickshank bewailed the loss of major architectural wonders to the war with Isis. Cryptic crossword compiler John Henderson increased sales of the Guardian in the town with a Bewdley themed crossword and explained the complexities of composing clues. A powerful performance by actor/playwright Michael Mears of This Evil Thing chronicled the fate of Conscientious Objectors in the First World War – Festival’s annual contribution to Bewdley Remembers. Timothy Watson aka Archers’ ‘Rob Titchener,’ explained the background of the important storyline that rocked the nation. Conservation Architect Anthony Peers told the fascinating story of Birmingham Town Hall, Britain’s first truly civic building. The Keith Turley art exhibition in the Museum art gallery was well attended and Keith appeared several times to talk to viewers about his work. The church service on the theme of Light featuring local school children and Festival Voices marked the end of Festival 2017. If you enjoyed any of the show tell your friends and we look forward to Bewdley Festival events in 2018. Photos of Jan Ravens,Tom Robinson and T’Pau, featuring Carol Decker. Colin Hill

The Bridge is the community voice of Bewdley

It is free and delivered by volunteers to more than 4,600 homes every month Visit us at www.bewdleybridge.org.uk

Welcome to December’s edition of The Bridge, full of events to celebrate Christmas: Concerts and Carols, pantomime and Father Christmas, coffee mornings and markets. On a practical note, the holiday season brings an earlier copy deadline than usual and we ask that material for January’s magazine reaches us by Friday 8th December.

Christmas has come early for one Bewdley charity. Community Transport has been serving our town for many years, working out of an office at the top of St. Anne’s Church tower and providing transport for those unable to use public services. The charity is celebrating the arrival of a new vehicle that is adapted for wheelchair users. Turn to page 25 to find how you can help this organisation that really does transform the lives of members of our community.

Bewdley continues to be blessed with independent shops, cafés and restaurants offering a wide range of goods and services. A group of independent retailers - many of whom advertise in the pages of The Bridge - is working to boost the town’s profile with a Facebook page and a programme of special events. Find out more on page 17.

Thank you to This is Bewdley Facebook page photographers who have once again shared pictures with Bridge readers. Turn to the centre colour pages to see Jubilee Gardens’ dancing statues and some glorious autumn sun captured in the forest.

Page 29 brings us the latest news from Wribbenhall’s Grey Green Farm. Find out about the perils of Mangle Wurzels and how Christmas shopping was organised nearly 100 years ago. And, as ever, during Advent and Christmas, Bewdley’s churches offer special services, from carols in candlelight to the excitement of a busy nativity service. Look out for details throughout the magazine. Margaret, Martin, Peter and Gill wish you all a very happy Christmas and a peaceful New Year.

Jon May, spokesperson for Shop, Eat, Sleep Bewdley, said, ‘There are so many new and established independent retailers in our town who really depend on local people, even more so at Christmas time. With free parking from 4pm and shops crammed full with unusual Christmas gifts, what better reason is there to shop local this year.’ Remember to ‘LIKE’ Shop, Eat, Sleep Bewdley on Facebook to find out more about the shops taking part and other activity taking place during December.

Knit & Natter at Bewdley Methodist Church

This group is celebrating ten years of clicking needles and clinking tea cups. Starting with just half a dozen people in 2007, it has more than doubled in size. Over the years they have knitted more than 3,000 clothes for premature babies, jumpers and cardigans for children in Rwanda, hats and scarves for refugees and woollen toys for HomeStart Wyre Forest. The group meets at the church on High Street at 2pm on the second Thursday each month and offers a warm welcome and friendly fellowship whether you want to knit or just natter.

Bewdley Festival Church Service

The children relax after their song. Photo Colin Hill At October’s Bewdley Festival Church Service we enjoyed the children of St Anne’s and Bewdley Primary Schools singing a lovely song called Shine Your Light and clearly enjoying every minute of the congregational hymn Shine Jesus Shine. It was a pleasure to work with the teachers and pupils from both schools – teaching a new song to a hall full of children and hearing them sing it back at you with energy and enthusiasm is a life affirming experience. Both schools should be congratulated for working so hard to ensure that music and singing is encouraged and performed with so much enjoyment by the children. If you didn’t make it to the Service this year – put Sunday 21st October 2018 in your diary now and come and join us for the Festival’s only free event. Alastair Elliott

Bewdley Library

Community News

As we hurtle towards the end of another year, most of us will sit down and take stock of what we have done (and not done) in the past twelve months. Get fitter; lose weight; give up alcohol; learn a language/instrument; catch up on all those great series everyone keeps raving about on Netflix; sign up for Netflix….the list goes on.

Maybe you wanted to read a little more? The Library service provides a range of books available to read physically (in your hand) and digitally (on your reading device). All you need is a library card and it's free to join. Over the last year we have had many people join the library for the first time and start enjoying the service. Don't miss out – sign up soon!

If you fancy getting to grips with technology or improving your skills, our Digital Champion Christine may be able to help. Since joining us as a volunteer she has helped many people access their devices with more confidence. She can give you support with your tablet/laptop and give you some pointers with using email, navigating web pages, and so on. This service is totally free; all you need to do is sign up for an appointment (Christine is available on Thursday mornings between 10 am and 12 noon). Drop into the library and see a member of staff. Whatever sort of year you have had, remember to celebrate the small things as well as the usual Christmas blowout; after all, if you're reading this you're still with us! Have a good Christmas/Winter break. Kay Sanderson Bewdley Library

News from Grey Green Farm Wribbenhall

If you look across towards the Crundalls Hill from the car park in Bewdley you will see some cows in the fields. These are our 'dry cows', those not being milked at present, and they will stay out until they calve. Each morning we take them silage, and check their welfare.

Since November the milking cows and heiffers have come into the yards and buildings where they will remain until Spring. The herd of milking cows are fed a ration of 5 tons of silage a day, and the photo shows the various layers of food that we have grown and harvested over the Summer: grass, chopped Spring barley (before the grain has ripened), maize; and soya. Recently we have started to add organic cider vinegar, recommended to promote health. The machine behind the tractor is a mixer wagon which weighs, combines and delivers the silage to ring feeders in the yards. When I started farming 50 years ago the cows were fed hay in the Winter, and we grew mangle wurzels for energy. The mangles had to be pulled by hand, each weighing about 6-8 lbs, and the leaves twisted off rather than cut or, like beetroot, they would bleed. Chopping the mangles was a daily task, and then they would be put into locally hand-made baskets which we called whisketts. I don't know if this is the correct name for them. (Does anyone else remember using, or making them?) Each cow would have a whiskett - about the size of a laundry basket - full of chopped mangles, delivered by hand to her stall. The biggest mangles were sort after as lanterns and carved out to hold candles for bonfire night : a bit like thepumpkin lanterns used for Halloween now.

I once used mangle wurzels to make wine - truly awful stuff! However when our eldest daughter was born, I thought that this 10 year vintage Grey Green Wurzel wine (has a certain ring to it!), was just the drink to wet the baby's head. Thank goodness my wife and baby stayed in the Croft long enough for me to recover!

As you prepare for Christmas, I thought you'd like to see this 1920s equivalent of online food shopping. This post card was found by Sue Healey when she lived at Hoarstone Farm. Mary Kent lived at Grey Green Farm so was buying very locally as Mrs. Page was her neighbour just across the fields. She writes: Dear Mrs. Page. Should be glad if you would kindly send me the Goose sometime Monday next Dec 21st. in feathers.Thanking. Yours Sincerely Mary Kent

Just two thoughts: the postal service was good value at a penny a stamp, and... I hope the goose arrived as expected! 35

Behind the Baton

Community News

It’s December, so naturally, I’m going to write about Christmas music, however, before I do, having just returned home from Bewdley’s Act of Remembrance, I want to pay tribute to Bewdley’s Marching Band whose playing is so central to the event. This year in particular, they also played on bravely as the rain and freezing wind whipped up around them. I also wanted to mention the young lady that plays the Last Post during the ceremony. If you’ve never played a brass instrument, you may not know that all those different notes you hear are just down to something called “embouchure” – the art of lip control. It’s very difficult to have the required control to cleanly change notes but consider adding in a cold wind and the nerves of being the only sound ringing out as hundreds of your fellow townspeople listen in silence. As ever, it was beautifully played and very moving.

As the years roll by, I do struggle to find something different to say about Christmas music. I am not ashamed to admit that I love the traditional sounds of carols and so I think I will merely say that in Bewdley as ever there will be plenty of Christmas music events during December and I hope you will get along to one of them. If you fancy a very traditional evening of well-known carols with the chance to sing along accompanied by a large choir and organ, then look no further than Bewdley Choral Society’s Christmas concert on Saturday 9th December at 6.30pm in St. Anne’s Church. The programme will be packed full of traditional favourites and there will be plenty of opportunities to join in. Naturally, mulled wine and mince pies will add to the atmosphere so it should be the epitome of a traditional Christmas evening. Bewdley Concert Band hold their annual Christmas Concert in St. Anne’s Church on Sunday 17th December at 7.30pm, again with seasonal music, mulled wine and a family atmosphere.

As ever, therefore, let me wish you all a very Happy, Peaceful and music-filled Christmas. Alastair Elliott

Transition Bewdley Repair Café

Community News

At the December Repair Café, customers can get their festive lights checked. If they are not working, our repairers may be able to identify and fix faults and even tell you where you can get replacement bulbs of various kinds.

Before the predicted severe winter weather arrives remember that fan heaters, electric fires, greenhouse heaters and the like can be checked for electrical safety. If any forward-thinking people have Tilley lamps as a precaution against power cuts, one of our Repairers who is a collector of Tilley lamps through the ages can service those for you too.

Our Repairers will be on hand to carry out a range of other repairs including small items of furniture, garments, kitchen appliances and electrical goods. With Christmas coming up our hard-working tool sharpener is expecting to sharpen not only the usual range of gardening tools but also carving knives ready for your turkey dinners!

We have a policy of supporting local businesses that make a living from carrying out repairs and alterations. This means for example that we can recommend reliable local services for most garment and curtain alterations etc. However when a cherished garment needs some repairs or alterations to extend its life and the cost of a professional repair far outweighs the value of the item our repairers are happy to help out. They will even teach people how to carry out their own simple alterations and repairs and to get the best out of their own sewing machines. The next Repair Café is on Saturday 16th December starting at 10.00 a.m. (please do not come before that as we are still setting up) and will finish promptly at 2.00 p.m.

For enquiries or to volunteer to help, contact: John Rhymer on 01299 403424 or email john.rhymer50@gmail.com

£2,500 raised for Alzheimer Society in Birmingham Velo 100 mile Cycle Ride

Community News

Retired Firefighter Alan Humphries wanted to do this event since a dear friend was recently diagnosed in his early 60’s. Alan was 67 last August, has two artificial knees and has had a shoulder reconstruction, so the cycle ride was a huge personal challenge. It took him 10 hours to complete but he did it!

A local Stride & Stroll walker leader turned cyclist, Alan started training for the event in March. He sorted out the best bike and his wife Sue says that the once garden shed is now a cycle workshop! He studied the correct diet and nutritional supplements and worked out the best regime for Alan in Bewdley on velo day his body requirements. He trained three times a week - two short rides at speed and then one long ride - and now averages 13.5 miles an hour. With phenomenal support from family and friends, the cash collected from sponsorship, a raffle and online donations means that the Grand Total raised so far is £2500!

Looking Back 1997

The Countdown to the Millennium was forecasting fearful consequences on all things electronic, Dolly the sheep was introduced to the world, Channel 5 was launched and Diana, Princess of Wales died. Here in Bewdley, the Bridge advertised a course on how to use Windows 95 (you don’t need to have your own computer), 250 trees were planted to form a coppice in Wribbenhall, Julie Felix sang at the Festival, and a fervent letter pleaded for a swimming pool for the town. (Does anyone have a photo of those trees ten years on?Do send it to editorial@bewdleybridge.org.uk so that we can print it in our next edition) Margaret Here are the names of some of the people in last month’s photo on p29: Bill Wear, Robert and Kathleen Gibbs and their children, Lucy and Matt Williams, Stephanie Seville, Ross Workman, Sue Mayoss,Vince and Kathy Taylor.

Sue Brown will be signing copies of her latest book at the Community Café, St. George’s Hall, Load Street Car Park on Tuesday, 5th December from 10am-12.00.

“Over Agaynst the Chappell” tells the fascinating story of a Bewdley building bearing the date 1632, speculates on the initials carved beneath the attic window and the mask in the eaves, and imagines the busy 17th century market-place setting.

Winter’s Herbal Helpers

Community News

For our distant ancestors, this time of year was one of preparation and although December brings the shortest day and a gradual return of the light, the harshest months, in terms of weather, are yet to come. In today’s modern age, we don’t have to worry about whether there is enough food or fuel to see us through the winter months, for we have the luxury of supermarkets and electricity companies. Nevertheless, preparation still remains key. This is the time to ensure that our homes are weatherproofed, that the elderly of the community are safe and warm and that we are physically strong enough to fight off the seasonal ailments of coughs, colds and flu. With regards to the latter, many people will choose to have the flu jab, or take vitamin supplements, whilst for others, a gentler approach is preferred, through choosing to drink a herbal infusion. Ginger root makes a delicious warming drink on a cold winter’s day and can act as a powerful immune system tonic. Dandelion leaf, that plant we love to mow down when it appears in a manicured lawn, has a myriad of health benefits, not least of which is its ability to strengthen the immune system. Hibiscus flower meanwhile, is high in Vitamin C and again, has a positive effect on our immunity. Many herbs however, have contraindications associated with their use and anyone taking prescribed medication, or under medical supervision, should contact their G.P. or a medical herbalist before taking herbal infusions. December in the Forest Browsing through my copy of the National Farmers’ Union’ Countryside magazine (always a good read) I spotted that an Avian Influenza Roadshow – a free event to give poultry keepers the latest advice to avoid an outbreak of the disease and what would happen if that occurred - was coming to Ledbury that very week. My diary told me I could make it and I duly found myself in The Feathers Hotel, a lone backyard poultry keeper in a room full of others with tens of thousands of birds. Through the presentations of the next few hours I learnt many things including: •

Out of 13 infections last winter 6 were in backyard poultry flocks.

The global picture: how the different strains of Avian Influenza (AI) are spreading worldwide with the associated risk of mutations producing new forms highly pathogenic to humans as well as birds. I hadn’t appreciated that my response as a very small scale chicken farmer had a serious part to play in the battle to prevent or delay dangerous epidemic. An outbreak or even an infection investigation would severely restrict movements of not only poultry and their products but vehicles too within a 3km radius. (Imagine having to apply for a licence to take the kids to school!) I wouldn’t want to be the cause of such trouble and economic difficulty if I could help it.

So, how do I stop my birds catching AI? We kept our birds indoors for the first 30 days’ control order a year ago then made a covered run for them so that they could be outside. Our difficulty was in stopping wild birds, especially those cheeky robins, from getting into the run and hen house through the tiniest holes. Now I have picked up some good, practical ideas and have a ‘to do’ list which includes making a better run, blocking access holes in the hen house and dealing effectively with rats. I also picked up a bunch of AI posters to pass on to fellow keepers.

All in all a day well spent.

With the chickens tucked up safe and well I can spend the shortest days of the year enjoying whatever sunshine we get and collecting natural materials for some Christmas decorations. A handful of long (5’ to 7’) prunings of wisteria, willow or vine can easily be wound into a ring that can have cones and seedheads attached by wire or glue gun. Some gold spray, glitter and ribbon will add colour and sparkle and your front door will gain a seasonal creation all of your own! Linda Iles
