Going like the Clappers!
Some of our more observant townspeople may have noticed that the last Sunday in November was strangely silent. There were no bells to summon the faithful to morning service at St. Anne’s! The reason lay in the bells themselves.
After being in place since 1984 the clappers inside the bells have suffered from general wear and tear and when the bells were inspected some months ago by a representative from the bell founders John Taylor & Co of Loughborough his report showed that the clappers needed attention.
This next bit is technical! Because of this the money has been found to resurface the strike point - where the clappers make contact with the bells themselves - replace the working parts and finally, after all the mechanical work completed, to prime the metal and coat it with two coats of industrial grade gloss paint. New leather washers were fitted and each clapper was provided with new castle nuts (they look like little castles) and split pins. Then all was reassembled and St Anne’s bells can ring out again with renewed vigour. The ringers themselves removed and later re-installed the clappers.

Nostalgia: not what it used to be.
Over Christmas I expect that like most people you had the happy experience of watching a repeat of a television programme from ten or more years ago. You may well have spotted the hero take out a black plastic housebrick and speak carefully into it. We viewers sit back and smile, saying “How quaint! how amusing! Just look at the size of his phone!”. However, I have a suspicion that these cries have been going on for many years .
Imagine if you will a cave. In it sits Stone Age man talking to his wife. “Uugh errr umm aaar arr eeuw oeoch agh mmmagh. Ha ha.”*
Piers Plowman's son sits on the Malvern Hills and stares into space as he remembers how his dad used his pointy stick on their fields. “Ich wot nat plughen wit en plugh, on myn lif. Ha ha”**, he tells his son as he manoeuvres the plough round the corner of the field.
Herbert Austen’s daughter adjusts her driving mirror and tells her passenger, “Do you remember Pa’s old car? More than twenty miles an hour and he’d panic. Ha ha”.
During a coffee break with the washing machine whizzing away in the background, my young neighbour mused, “My gran used all the ends of soap tablets and put them in a little wire thing to wash her smalls in. Can you believe it? Soap to do her laundry! Ha ha.” Yes, it's always been going on. We tend to think it's only us who are always up to date, and the previous generation that was so out of touch. But come on, confess. Have you ever been tempted to plaintively say, “But what’s the point of Facebook?”
Final thought. Find someone, preferably female, about 73 years old and say just two words to them, then sit back and let nostalgia have its way. The two words? Liberty bodice.
* Do you remember when dad used to eat his mammoth raw? Because no-one realised that burning it gave it a much better mouth-feel and taste.

Prayer in St. Anne’s Church

St. Anne’s continues to be open Tuesday to Saturday 10am to 2pm. During this time we welcome our many friends from the town and visitors to the town, with light refreshment available. The church is also open at these times for private prayer. You are always welcome to pray in church, and there is also a side chapel (towards the front on the left-hand side) that you can use if you wish. Here you can also light a candle. There is a prayer board immediately as you come into church on which you are welcome to pin prayer requests. Each week these requests are offered by the regular Saturday morning prayer group. St. Leonard’s Church is usually open in daylight hours for prayer, peace and quiet.
Do you need to hire a meeting room?
Then Bewdley Baptist Church may have just what you need. We have several light, warm, well furnished rooms in the Church building (all on the ground floor), which we can rent out for one off or regular bookings. The Church’s Main Hall with balcony and stage can seat about 200 people and the floor area can be cleared to give a large, carpeted space. There is audio-visual equipment available and disabled access to the carpeted Back Hall, which can seat approximately 40 people and can also be cleared of chairs for maximum versatility. There is an adjoining well equipped kitchen. The Cottage fronts the High Street and is at the entrance to the Church. It has been recently renovated to a high standard with disabled access, toilet and kitchen. There are two small adjoining rooms seating up to about 20 people in total and is ideal for small meetings or children’s parties. It opens directly on to the Church’s enclosed courtyard garden. Terms for hiring these premises are very competitive and we offer 50% discount for charitable or non-charging events. The blessed relief of January hits me like a cold shower after a heatwave; I've just got one family birthday to go and then I can relax again until next
'New Year, New You' time is now upon us, although trawling through the internet for inspiration I sense rebellion in the air. Whereas we have the same frenzied encouragement to take up a new exercise regime/start our own business/meditate for 20 minutes every morning, we now have those who admonish us for not having started earlier. "Why wait until January? Start now!" Whatever you decide to do, you're doing it wrong in somebody's book.
So here's another idea. Make resolutions by all means (it shows that hope springs eternal in your heart, if nothing else) and at the same time look back over the last twelve months and make a list of things you did that worked, or you enjoyed, or helped someone you care about. If you can, do them again this year; attempt them, nurture them and practise them. That way, you'll be able to celebrate your achievements in the New Year as well as casting around for the next way to improve yourself. Of course, there's nothing like a library for a collection of human endeavour, tragedy, and triumph in the face of adversity if you are in need of inspiration. Occasionally we all get things right. On Thursday 9th of November Bewdley handed out over £4000 to 20 local charities and organisations. The £4000 was the proceeds of a Golf Day held at Bewdley Pines Golf club and a big raffle.
Representatives of the charities and organisations were invited to a Buffet meal and to make presentations, each person described their charity and how they would use the donation.

Transition Bewdley Repair Café

A Happy New Year to readers of The Bridge and to all our Repair Café Customers.
The Repair Café is back again on the third Saturday of each month to mend those broken Christmas presents and any other items!
Our volunteer Repairers tell us that not only do they enjoy the challenge of diagnosing the faults in items that are brought in for repair and then attempting to put them right but as important to them is the opportunity to talk and get to know the other repairers and to meet customers. Many of our customers tell us that they too appreciate the social opportunities that the Repair café offers. Whist waiting, they enjoy not just a cup of tea and piece of cake but also the opportunity to chat to other customers. They then appreciate being able to talk to the Repairer and learn more about their item, what the problem is, how it can be repaired and how such problems can be avoided in the future. The aims of Transition Bewdley include reducing our carbon footprint and helping re-build our community. The Repair Café helps us to achieve both these aims. Bewdley Repair Café – repairing our community one hoover at a time!
The next Repair Café will be on Saturday 20th. January 2018 at St. George’s Hall from 10am – 2pm
Looking Back
A final look at how the Bridge reached its present form with the edition from May 1994.
This saw the launch of its break away from its old purpose as a church publication. The rector of St Anne’s at that time, Rev Geoff Anderson, was a computer expert at a time when this was unusual. He took the parish magazine for St Anne’s and announced that from this edition “it truly becomes a “bridge”, joining all parts of the community”.
His exhortation still rings true: “YOU are the community; the Bridge is a community voice. Use it to get across!”
And so say all of the present team!

New Year at Ribbesford Restoration of a ‘Living Churchyard’ around St Leonard’s
With the arrival of 2018, we should like to consult the many visitors to St Leonard’s churchyard about an exciting idea to change the management of the churchyard. This lovely corner of Worcestershire hillside is home to very many wild flower species, and could become a precious and much needed haven for a great variety of wildlife, especially bees, butterflies and pollinating insects of all kinds.
The proposal is to make gradual changes, starting with marking out spaces on the hillside which will be left unmowed until later in the summer, like a hay meadow. All the advice agrees that this is the sure and natural way to re-establish wildflower diversity. Quickly, we should begin to see the wildflowers flourish in their seasons, and as they will be left to seed, they will spread delightfully.
We shall make sure that there are contact lines for anyone who finds that their path to a grave is becoming impassable, and a way through will be mowed.

Bewdley Scout hut becomes available for other use
Bewdley Scouts have recently consolidated their activities on their Wribbenhall site in Spencer Avenue. This means that the scout hut and surrounding green space in Park Alley, off High Street, has become surplus to requirements. The hut may be suitable for other community use. It is currently on a long lease from Wyre Forest District Council.
Expressions of interest are invited from local organisations or businesses who may be interested in occupying the premises.

A year in the life of: Julian Phillips, Coach Driver When you're a coach driver, no two days are the same; so as you can imagine, every year is different from the previous. 2017 has been no different for me. I have taken coach parties as far north as Oban and as far south as the edge of the Dolomites. I have ascended to over 8,000 ft above sea level at Grossglockner in Austria and 250 ft below sea level through the channel tunnel.
Literally every point on the compass has been covered by our coach this year. Cornwall, Devon, East Anglia, Scotland, Kent, Wales, Northumberland and many more places throughout the UK as well as the Isle of Man, France, Germany, Belgium and Austria.
We have a strong core of regular customers and it is always nice to see a mix of different familiar faces as well as new people. As well as the mix of destinations, this is what makes every day different.

Working in a family business is also one of those things that makes each day different. On occasion my wife and four children join me on tour. The children often help me to clean the coach too. August bank holiday Saturday saw my wedding day. It wouldn't have been a Phillips wedding without the coach playing its role: taking the the bride and her bridesmaids to the wedding ceremony!

Racing Pigeons
I’ve been keeping pigeons for forty five years now. It all began when I started work as a groundsman and got talking to my workmates. Some of them were keen racing pigeon enthusiasts and got me started with a few birds. It took four years and a lot of learning, advice and patience to win my first prize but I can safely say that over the years I have improved both my skills and my stock until this year I won eleven races.
The first step in winning a race is of course in producing prize birds. Choosing a good pair then waiting for the eggs to hatch is always exciting. Once the young pigeon is fledged and used to its pen it is released into the garden where it will fly very close to the pen before beginning ranging that’s flying round, learning first the garden, then the surrounding area. Only when it has learned its immediate surroundings will I put the youngster into its crate and take it a couple of miles away before releasing it and hurrying home to see it safely back into its shed.
One of the great mysteries of the natural world is how a pigeon can do this - find its way home, sometimes many hundreds of miles. It used to be thought that the pigeon’s brain had a receptor that could respond to the earth’s magnetism. Scientists have disrupted any “receptors” by attaching magnets to the pigeon’s head; it still finds its way to the loft. Others have wondered if it navigates by star patterns, but most journeys are in daylight. The best that scientists have so far come up with is that it is a combination of many things.
And now we have the pigeon airborne, I’ll leave my story for this month.

Are Nanobots going to change our lives? What does Nanobot mean?
Definition
Nanobots are robots that are microscopic in nature, measured largely on the scale of nanometers. They are currently in the research and development phase, but on realization they are expected to do specific tasks at the atomic, molecular and cellular level and help in bringing about many breakthroughs, especially in medical science. Nanobots are also known as nanomachines, nanorobots, nanomites, nanites or nanoids.
Nanobots can be considered to be machine version of a bacteria or virus. They can be biological or synthetic, but are adapted to perform preprogrammed tasks at the atomic level. They are expected to be autonomous in nature and powered by a small cell or battery, or even solar cells. The whole idea behind nanobots is in having a device which can interact at the nano scale and help in understanding or manipulating structures at the nanoscale level. In the development of nanobots, nanoassembly and nanomanipulation have important roles.
Considering their potential, nanobots find their first and most prominent applications in medical science. Applications such as closing open wounds, rebuilding ruptured arteries and veins and traversing through the body for diagnoses are some important realizations. They are expected to aid in research related to cancer, AIDS and other major diseases as well as in helping brain, heart and diabetes research. This takes place twice a month on the 1st & 3rd Thursday at Riverside Church Centre in Dog Lane. Saturday 18 November 2017 saw the Wribbenhall Parish Room hosting a Children in Need fundraiser. The Line Dancing event was warmly welcomed by enthusiastic dancers, both beginners and the more experienced movers. A supper of Chill Con Carne with jacket potatoes helped fuel the event. Local businesses donated raffle prizes, resulting in the Parish Room Committee being delighted to write a cheque to the charity for £410.00. Highlight of the evening was 10-year old Mia Branford from Kidderminster agreeing to foster a baby Pudsey. She was handed Pudsey Junior by members of Team Pudsey, Anne Mace and Anthony Trick. Bewdley Town Council News January 2018
Town Council Grants Do you represent a local community group or charity in Bewdley? The Town Council have two grant funding schemes to help local groups fund general running costs, specific projects and/or promotional activity. Grants up to a maximum of £1500 can be given, but each application is considered on its merits. Details can be found on our website, or you can contact the Town Clerk directly at townclerk@bewdleytowncouncil.org. Deadline for applications is 31st January 2018. Calling all Community Groups! Following last year’s successful event, the Town Council in conjunction with St George’s Hall are planning another community showcase at the Hall in the spring of 2018 which will be an opportunity to tell residents and visitors what your group or organisation does, sign up new members and also recruit new volunteers. The event will be completely free for stallholders and attendees. Community Flood Volunteers In order to keep the temporary Beale’s Corner barriers, the Environment Agency (EA) is asking for our help. Neighbourhood Plan The Council have decided to press ahead with the draft version of the Neighbourhood Plan despite delays imposed by the review of the district Local Plan. A full consultation will take place to ensure that the Plan reflects the wishes of the community and will be based on all of the consultation results and feedback gained over the last two years. Keep an eye on our dedicated Neighbourhood Plan website at www.beinbewdley.org What does the Town Council do? Sometimes it is difficult to work out who does what and how your council tax is spent. The Town Council have the smallest share of the council tax which we are duty bound to spend wisely. For example the Town Council keep the church clock running, provide all the floral displays, keep the toilets clean, provide the Christmas lights, pay for the Christmas tree, maintain Wyre Hill play area, give grants to local organisations, run lunch clubs and social activities, carry out highway maintenance, provide the life rings along the riverside and lots more. January in the Forest
I’m writing this article on The Snowy Day. It remains to be seen whether there are lots more snowy days before publication.
Some thinning has been going on in the forest belonging to the Guild of St. George at Ruskin Land. Stacks of oak are accumulating in the loading area down the hill from Uncllys Farm and being taken away periodically by timber lorries, sadly mainly for use as firewood because of its poor quality. The objective of management is to establish a regular thinning regime so that the timber grows more strongly and the woodland becomes lighter and richer in species. Between the farm and the cattle grid on Tanners Hill the thinned woodland will be fenced so that it can be grazed by cattle, producing a ‘wood pasture’- a habitat which will form a natural link between the orchards of Bowcastle and Uncllys and in which we hope that the rare Lesser Spotted Woodpecker will thrive. It may be, though, that the success of this lovely bird may be beyond our local help: ‘The Nature of Wyre’ quotes a study which suggests that climate change may be responsible for a lack of invertebrates in the tree canopy at the right time to coincide with the hatching of young. If you listen very carefully on your forest walks this month (and are very lucky) you may hear woodpeckers drumming on resounding branches as they begin to attract mates and demarcate their territories. The Lesser Spotted is said to drum more rapidly and produce a sound rather like a ruler being twanged on a table (do schoolchildren still do that?).
On a much smaller scale, the length of hedge which we planted at the farm soon after we moved there was needing some attention and was deemed ideal to be used for a hedgelaying course. Under the skilful hand of Wade Muggleton and the quick-learning Wyre Community Land Trust volunteers it took only a day for the hedge to be trimmed, cut, staked and laid in traditional style. It looks very fine and so do they! If you would like to join them for countryside work parties and learn new skills contact the Trust on volunteer@wyreclt.org.uk. The hedge should now thicken up to form a stock-proof barrier. With its variety of nut- and berry-bearing trees and shrubs (hawthorn, hazel, elder, dogwood, rose and field maple) it will be a food source for many kinds of wildlife and the blossom will provide nectar in the spring.
