February in the Forest
This is a good month for those winter jobs in garden, farm and forest. Last month I wrote about hedgelaying at Uncllys Farm, and we have also put in many hours pruning the apple and pear trees. The stone fruit (cherry, plum, damson, greengage and apricot) are pruned in the growing season when the sap is rising so that they are less vulnerable to diseases such as silver leaf. I feel myself very fortunate in being able to get rid of the prunings by having a jolly good bonfire, often of such good proportions that I can cook my dinner in the embers! This is, sadly, not an option for most town-dwellers. The snowdrops seem to have been up for a while, and the hazel catkins for even longer, spilling clouds of pollen on breezy days. This month look out for the leaves and green flowers of Dog’s Mercury in the woods: it’s one of the earliest plants to flower and probably the least exciting! However, my research (for which I thank the ‘Flora Britannica’ by Richard Mabey) has turned up some interesting facts on this common woodland ground cover. For one thing, it’s highly poisonous and there are records of foragers mistaking it for something palatable and being very ill with vomiting and other unpleasant symptoms. It belongs to the spurge family, of which I can’t imagine eating any member knowingly. The ‘mercury’ part of the name is shared with the old pot-herb Chenopodium bonus-henricus, more commonly known by the name Good King Henry. Hungry folk who had survived the winter on dried beans and salted meat would have welcomed the spring shoots of both this and the common stinging nettle, cooking the fresh greens and doing themselves some good with a dose of iron and vitamins. Now for something much more colourful. The Hawfinches in Jubilee Gardens have attracted quite a bit of attention from birdwatchers. They and other flocks in Britain have arrived from mainland Europe, especially Germany and Romania, where seed crops have failed. They are particularly attracted to yew and hornbeam, feeding on the fruits and seeds. They used to be associated with the local cherry orchards and could crack open the cherry stones with their powerful beaks to get to the kernels inside. These would probably have been native birds (now quite scarce) living and breeding here, although their numbers would have been boosted by visitors each winter. Thank you to Philip Parsons for his lovely photo taken on 7th January (above). We are still seeing other winter migrants feeding on berries and seeds in gardens and the countryside. Peacock and brimstone butterflies should emerge from hibernation this month if the weather is warm enough, and perhaps there will be some birdsong and nest-making. Members of Bewdley Carnival Committee have been working throughout the year so that this major event in the town’s calendar can be staged again in 2018. A successful appeal last year raised much needed funds to meet some of the Carnival’s costs and now your help is needed on the day itself. Prayer in St. Anne’s Church
Church News l
St. Anne’s continues to be open Tuesday to Saturday 10am to 2pm. During this time we welcome our many friends from the town and visitors to the town, with light refreshment available. The church is also open at these times for private prayer. You are always welcome to pray in church, and there is also a side chapel (towards the front on the left-hand side) that you can use if you wish. Here you can also light a candle. There is a prayer board immediately as you come into church on which you are welcome to pin prayer requests. Each week these requests are offered by the regular Saturday morning prayer group. St. Leonard’s Church is usually open in daylight hours for prayer, peace and quiet. Who Let The Dads Out? An opportunity for dads, granddads and male carers to spend time playing and doing craft activities with their pre-school children in a male-friendly atmosphere (but we do welcome mums as well). There are hot drinks and bacon-butties too! Who Let The Dads Out? Takes place on the second Saturday of the month at Bewdley Baptist Church from 9.30-11.30am. February brings festivals of fire and light; the Celtic festival of Imbolc on February 1st, celebrating the return of light and the rebirth of Spring with fire and revelry, and the corresponding Christian festival on February 2nd, Candlemas, when Church candles for the coming year are blessed and Jesus is remembered as 'the Light of the World'.
I once worked in the Yorkshire town of Marsden which, along with its neighbour Slaithwaite*, was much loved of TV location scouts looking for settings in the North. Marsden had a yearly Imbolc festival; Slaithwaite had its own February Moonraking Festival, celebrating the village tale of two smugglers who, about to be discovered collecting barrels of hooch from the canal, managed to convince the constabulary they were trying to rake the Moon's reflection out of the water, were dismissed as harmless fools and left to get on with it. Reading helps us acquire new knowledge which can 'light a fire' within us; we are empowered to ask questions and make informed decisions about our experiences and how to broaden them. By reading we fuel our inner fire and illuminate our lives. The more you read the more you are informed; and the more you know the better you can pretend that you don't know; as the Slaithwaite smugglers discovered, sometimes it pays to be thought a fool.

Restoration of a ‘Living Churchyard’ around St Leonard’s
We are consulting the many visitors to St Leonard’s churchyard about an exciting idea to change the management of the churchyard. This lovely corner of Worcestershire hillside is home to very many wild flower species, and could become a precious and much needed haven for a great variety of wildlife, especially bees, butterflies and pollinating insects of all kinds. The proposal is to make gradual changes, starting with marking out spaces on the hillside which will be left unmowed until later in the summer, like a hay meadow. All the advice agrees that this is the sure and natural way to re-establish wildflower diversity. Quickly, we should begin to see the wildflowers flourish in their seasons, and as they will be left to seed, they will spread delightfully. We shall make sure that there are contact lines for anyone who finds that their path to a grave is becoming impassable, and a way through will be mowed. Bewdley Festival present two pieces of theatre at St George’s Hall.
The Dancing Club on Saturday 3rd March is the story of Frank and Wynn Freeman who founded their Dance Club in nearby Kidderminster in 1947. It developed into an iconic community focus and attracted all the stars of music and dance over the following decades. The production tells their story and recreates the mood and atmosphere of Frank and Wynn’s Dance Club across the years, featuring many dance and music styles.

Here I Belong on Tuesday 13th March sees the Hall set out cabaret style to celebrate Elsie's birthday. Elsie has lived here all her life. She's seen wars, weddings, elections, funerals, people coming and people going over six decades - from the coronation in 1953 to her birthday party today. The action happens all around the audience – and there will be cake!

The Revd Megan Gibbins became the new Rector of Bewdley and Wribbenhall on 14th January at a service in St. Anne’s Church led by Bishop Graham Usher and Archdeacon Nikki Groake. St. Anne’s was full with members of Bewdley’s churches, representatives from the town and wider community, and Megan’s friends and family, all there to support her as she begins her work in Bewdley. After the service, the celebrations continued in St. George’s Hall.

My name is Ralph and I am 75 years old. I moved to Bewdley last year from France where I had lived for almost 20 years. Before moving to France I lived in West London and I had principally worked for theatre (the entertainment rather than the hospital variety) for many years. I worked on many technical aspects of lighting and sound, both design and installation to running my own lighting and sound hire company supplying equipment to many local groups and organisations. Corporate functions often used my services.
I first came across Repair Café at a U3A (University of the Third Age) meeting some months ago and asked if I could help as a volunteer and am now a regular repairer. At the Bewdley Repair Café, although virtually anything can be brought in for repair, I tend to look after electrical items. However I can turn my hand to most things.
Now I can only thank my father for the varied skills that I apparently have. I know very little about him for he died of TB when only 24 and I was only 4 months old and this led to my being adopted. However I do know that he was a radio engineer and during the war was working on the Wellington bombers that were being manufactured at Brooklands in Surrey. So I think it is quite amazing that I have apparently inherited his skills.
Helping at the Repair Café gives one an immense sense of satisfaction for it is wonderful in a small way to be giving something back to society. Although there is the occasional item where for a number of reasons a repair is not feasible, most items are capable of being repaired which means that they are not needlessly thrown away. One meets some lovely people; once an elderly lady presented me with an equally elderly Roberts radio. This had a long wave band on which she loved listening to the BBC World Service. I carried out a repair and to see her lovely face light up with a beautiful smile when she heard her radio working again brought me a great deal of happiness. Such is the pleasure of volunteering at the Repair Café. Ralph is one of many volunteers that you will meet at the Transition Bewdley Repair Café in St. George’s Hall on the third Saturday of each month. We now have three regulars on our sharpening team so queues for this service are much shorter than in the past. Come and chat to our fantastic team on 17th February while having your items repaired or sharpened. The Bewdley Carnival Committee are planning and booking acts for this year’s Carnival but we have a problem! We are in desperate need of people to help on Carnival Day on Saturday 9th June. Just an hour or two on the day would ensure that this year’s Carnival can be put on safely. We need help with the road closures around the parade route, collecting entrance money and general help on the field. From Christmas onwards, the museum has been closed to allow for the annual programme of maintenance works including the replacement of the Brass Foundry roof. The Tourist information Centre and Shop re-opens for business on Monday 5th February 10am to 4.30pm.The TIC will continue to extend their range of gifts over the coming months and would like to thank everyone for their valued custom over the past year. The Museum and Café will re-open on Saturday 3rd March. Our opening exhibition in the newly refurbished Wyre Forest Gallery features artefacts from the museum’s Japanese and Chinese collections. Items on display will include snuff bottles, scroll paintings and Netsukes. A Japanese themed event on 3rd March accompanies the opening day with Taico drummers and Martial arts and Samurai sword demonstrations. The café will feature oriental themed foods on their menu. A new geology display will feature more specimens from our Geology collection, including our very own ‘sea dragon’, an Ichthyosaur over 60 million years old. A six week Strala Yoga Course began in January on Tuesday evenings 6.30-7.30pm in the Guidhall with qualified Yoga Instructor Sam Matthews, £30 for the six week course or £7 per session. Behind the Baton
For a Choral Director, having put away the carol books for another year, the New Year brings about the excitement of new music to prepare for the next concert – usually in the Spring. For Bewdley Choral Society this year, that means taking on Elgar’s epic “The Music Makers” – a wonderfully expressive and thrilling cantata set to an Ode by Arthur O’Shaughnessy and featuring snippets of melodies from many other well known Elgar compositions. The remainder of the programme will also feature other well-known Elgar works and although “The Music Makers” is not one of Elgar’s more frequently performed works, I can promise a really enjoyable and accessible evening of music. The new term has also brought the arrival of more new members which is really encouraging and for me, to see the society continue to grow, means that we can consider more expansive works such as this Elgar. Therefore, please mark Saturday May 12th in your diaries for a thoroughly indulgent evening of Elgar – not forgetting of course that it was all written just a few short miles away in Malvern. Bewdley Choral Society now has an active Facebook page, so if you want to hear more, please check in there for information on this and future concert plans. This month sees the annual Wyre Forest Young Musician of the Year competition, held in St George’s Hall on Saturday February 10th where we shall be looking forward to seeing the emerging young musical talent this area has to offer. I expect this year to be another keenly contested event with prizes on offer in a number of categories. This competition takes a different approach to the more traditional competitions for young musicians as it is held in a slightly more relaxed manner but also provides these promising young musicians with the opportunity to perform in a professional environment with a live audience and full sound and lighting. Nothing can compare to that experience of standing on a stage under lights and hopefully the competition helps build our entrants’ confidence and enjoyment of performing. We will have an experienced panel of judges with a wide range of musical capabilities providing a balanced view and comprehensive feedback (somewhat more grounded than X Factor judgements I like to think!). It also gives me the opportunity to pay tribute again to Peter Barnett who works so tirelessly with the Bewdley Youth Festival to provide young performers with this unrivalled platform to learn and develop. Bewdley Cricket Club is located on High Street, sandwiched between the idyllic River Severn and Red Hill at its Lower Park Headquarters. Set amid some of Worcestershire's finest rural scenery, the ground is considered one of the prettiest in the county. The ground is the perfect backdrop to any celebration, be it a birthday, christening, or wedding, and the wonderful out door space is complimented by a large furnished patio area. The clubhouse, having been entirely refurbished in 2012, boasts a fully licensed bar with a range of draught beer and has the capacity for parties up to 100 people. BEWDLEY PASSION 2018
The Bewdley Passion 2018 At the Foot of the Cross
Since 2013, the Bewdley Churches have come together each year during Holy Week to offer different ways of reflecting on the final days in the life of Jesus through the Bewdley Passion.
The 2018 Bewdley Passion programme At the Foot of the Cross will begin on the evening of Wednesday 28th March in St. Anne’s Church with a Worcester Rep production of Jesus My Boy. This is a thought-provoking and humorous one-man play performed by Bewdley’s own Jonathan Darby, telling the story of Jesus through the eyes of Joseph, an ordinary and down-to-earth man who is just about the worst carpenter in Nazareth. The churches will each be holding their own services and events on Maundy Thursday, and then on Good Friday 30th March, we will come back together for three different activities: At 1.00 p.m. the Bewdley Churches will hold a united service in Jubilee Gardens to recount the events of Maundy Thursday and Good Friday, each congregation telling a part of the story. At 3.00 p.m. there is a guided walk to the foot of the cross at Bewdley’s own Golgotha (approx. 2 miles round trip) with a short service and meditation at the foot of the cross. Our now-traditional choral climax to the day comes with a performance of Stainer’s Crucifixion in St. Anne’s Church at 7.30 p.m. with Musical Director Alastair Elliott, the Festival Voices & Friends, and soloists Alan Fairs and Harry Lewis.

Classsical Piano Recital
Bewdley Methodist Church in High Street continues its series of “Music in the Chapel” concerts with a piano recital on Saturday 10th March at 2.30pm. Distinguished musician Tony Bridgewater – composer, conductor, soloist and accompanist – will be playing music by Bach, Mozart and Beethoven. A former student at the Birmingham School of Music and St John’s College Cambridge, Tony has composed music for orchestra, concert band and choir, and sonatas for piano, violin, trumpet and cello. In 2014 he became a Trustee of the Birmingham Conservatoire Association and is a member of the Conservatoire Development Council supporting the development of the new Royal Birmingham Conservatoire at Millennium Point. Amongst his regular recitals he also finds time to act as principal accompanist of Kidderminster Male Choir. The concert will feature Bach’s French Suite IV Eb, Mozart’s Sonata K333 and Beethoven Sonata Op.14 No.1. A real treat for lovers of piano music is assured! Riverside Dementia Café
This takes place twice a month on the 1st & 3rd Thursday at Riverside Church Centre in Dog Lane. The Dementia Café is run by volunteers with nursing and care qualifications. Clients are encouraged to participate in a variety of activities and have a two course cooked lunch. Activities include music, drumming, singing, crafting, board games, darts, skittles and dancing.

Wyre Forest Young Musician of the Year 2018
Bewdley Youth Festival is holding the fourth annual Wyre Forest Young Musician of the Year competition for young musicians who are in education and either live or attend a school or college within the Wyre Forest district
The competition is open to young people aged 13 to 18 as at 31 December 2017, and takes place during the afternoon of Saturday 10th February. The category winners are invited to perform at a Gala Concert that evening at which the Young Musician of the Year will be chosen and the winner of the prize for Best Original Composition will be announced.
Categories for the competition are: Classical Music Section (instrumentalists and singers); Solo Instrumentalist; Solo Singer (accompanied or unaccompanied) and Group (two or more members, acoustic or amplified). In addition there are prizes for: The Helen Mackaness Award for The Wyre Forest Young Musician of the Year and The Bewdley Youth Festival Prize for best original composition.

The competition takes place in St George’s Hall, Bewdley from 2:00 pm with the Gala Concert starting at 7:30 pm. Doors open at 7.00pm. Tickets for the Gala Concert are £5 and £3 for those who are 18 or under or currently in education. Competitors are admitted free.

Wyre Forest Reading group takes off!
After a successful public meeting at Kidderminster Library in October 2017, the Wyre Forest Read Easy Group, which covers the Wyre Forest and Cleobury Mortimer area, is set to commence its work during 2018 to help adults who struggle with reading. A ‘Skills for Life’ survey of 16-65 years olds in 2011 found that 5% of adults in England and Wales could only recognise a few common words, with a further 2.1% barely able to read labels on food or simple health and safety notices at work; nationally, that’s hundreds of thousands of people. Adults who struggle to read are five times more likely to be unemployed and four times more likely to experience long-term unemployment. Although they develop coping strategies, they are unlikely to reach their potential. They struggle to help their children with learning and are less likely to vote, or take part in public and community life. Read Easy UK was set up in 2011 to tackle this ‘invisible’ problem and has already helped hundreds of people learn to read. Read Easy Wyre Forest will become one of a growing number of Read Easy groups that operate up and down the country. Read Easy offers free, friendly, flexible, one-to-one coaching for any adult who struggles with reading. New readers meet with their coaches for just half an hour at a time, twice a week, at one of a range of approved local venues, and work together through the reading materials provided. Working in private at their own pace, they build not only reading skills, but also confidence and self-esteem, often learning to read in as little as six months. The Read Easy Wyre Forest Management Team, who are all volunteers, is still looking for someone with fundraising experience to join the Committee. It is also working to gain local support and attract the attention of sponsors for the different aspects of this communitybased project, from helping with accommodation to funding reading materials. Bewdley Youth Café
After undergoing a complete refurbishment, Bewdley Youth Café reopened on Monday 8th January. Our new hours are 7.15 to 8.20.a.m. and 3.15 to 5.30 p.m. on each school day. Weekend opening may be available in the future.
We hope to liaise with Bewdley Baptist and Riverside Elim Churches to provide even more opportunities for young people. Hopefully the 6th form pupils will start using the Cafe at times they choose. We have new Trustees and 'back up staff' to ensure we go forward in a positive manner.
We also would like to thank all those who contributed to the refurbishment, either financially or in other ways. Without such kindness the town would have lost a much needed facility. Derek Killingworth Trustee 47

Town Council Grants Do you represent a local community group or charity in Bewdley? The Town Council have two grant funding schemes to help local groups fund general running costs, specific projects and/or promotional activity. Grants up to a maximum of £1500 can be given, but each application is considered on its merits. Details can be found on our website, or you can contact the Town Clerk directly at townclerk@bewdleytowncouncil.org. Deadline for applications is 31st January 2018. Calling all Community Groups! Following last year’s successful event, the Town Council in conjunction with St George’s Hall are planning another community showcase at the Hall in the spring of 2018 which will be an opportunity to tell residents and visitors what your group or organisation does, sign up new members and also recruit new volunteers. The event will be completely free for stallholders and attendees. Community Flood Volunteers In order to keep the temporary Beale’s Corner barriers, the Environment Agency (EA) is asking for our help. Neighbourhood Plan The Council have decided to press ahead with the draft version of the Neighbourhood Plan despite delays imposed by the review of the district Local Plan. A full consultation will take place to ensure that the Plan reflects the wishes of the community and will be based on all of the consultation results and feedback gained over the last two years. Keep an eye on our dedicated Neighbourhood Plan website at www.beinbewdley.org What does the Town Council do? Sometimes it is difficult to work out who does what and how your council tax is spent. The Town Council have the smallest share of the council tax which we are duty bound to spend wisely. For example the Town Council keep the church clock running, provide all the floral displays, keep the toilets clean, provide the Christmas lights, pay for the Christmas tree, maintain Wyre Hill play area, give grants to local organisations, run lunch clubs and social activities, carry out highway maintenance, provide the life rings along the riverside and lots more.
