April’s Bridge last year had some glorious camellias on the front cover, out in full bloom in the middle of March. How different 2018 has been! If spring has still not arrived when this magazine does, Margaret’s pictures on the centre pages will remind you of what is to come.
Bewdley Museum is now in full swing for the new season and, as well as exhibitions and other events, a full programme of Easter holiday children’s activities is on offer. Details are on pages 11 and 31.
I remember being at a public meeting several years ago when the St. George’s Hall refurbishment was being discussed. The meeting was asked how they would like the Hall to be used. “A Community Cinema” was one response. A group quickly formed to put the idea into action and now the weekly Cinema in the Hall has become a popular feature of town life, all run by volunteers. Check out what is on offer this month on the St. George’s Hall listings page inside the back cover. (A typo has crept into the page this month; Emily Barker and the Ags Connolly Duo are appearing on Friday 6th April, not in March.)
Riverside Church has been running a very successful Dementia Café for over eighteen months, supporting those affected by this disease. On page 43, Liz Walton explains how she came to set it up. And in this month’s centre pages we’re pleased to meet Peter Whittle from the sharpening team at Transition Bewdley Repair Café. A new name on The Bridge After fifteen years in Stourport, the end of the Anglo Buildings lease in Baldwin Road prompted a review of the A&G business and we decided that the way forward was a merger with a like-minded company, Vernon Print & Design. Prayer in St. Anne’s Church
Church News l
St. Anne’s continues to be open Tuesday to Saturday 10am to 2pm. During this time we welcome our many friends from the town and visitors to the town, with light refreshment available. The church is also open at these times for private prayer. You are always welcome to pray in church, and there is also a side chapel (towards the front on the left-hand side) that you can use if you wish. Here you can also light a candle. There is a prayer board immediately as you come into church on which you are welcome to pin prayer requests. Each week these requests are offered by the regular Saturday morning prayer group. St. Leonard’s Church is usually open in daylight hours for prayer, peace and quiet.

There will be lots going on in the Museum over Easter weekend starting with The Bewdley Passion on Good Friday 30th March 1pm-2pm in Jubilee Gardens. Together in the Garden is a service offered by the combined Bewdley Churches. Children’s activities will commence for the Easter holidays on Good Friday starting with craft eggs and egg cups. Easter Sunday will see the return of our very popular eggciting egg hunt in Jubilee Gardens 12-3pm, £3 per person includes a Easter Egg to take home.
Easter Activities are on every day Monday to Friday of the Easter Holidays 11am-3.30pm in the Museum Saw Yard at a cost of £4 per child. All children must be supervised. Just turn up: no need to book. See more details on page 31.
Because of the snowy weather at the start of March our opening event the East Asian Experience has been rescheduled to take place on Sunday 1st April with CSO Taiko Drummers and a group demonstrating Classical Japanese weaponry and Jujutsu skills, plus a collection of original weaponry and armour. The East Asian exhibition will continue in the Gallery until 7th May. In the Saw Yard, an exhibition from the Worcestershire Society of Chartered Architects awards highlights the winners from 2017. The exhibition runs until 29th April.
Dates for your diary: Following the success of the Outdoor Theatre in Jubilee Gardens last year we have arranged a number of events again for 2018. The popular David Walliams production of The Midnight Gang performed by Heartbreak Productions returns on Sunday 10th June at 5pm and Quantum Theatre are returning with Midsummer Night’s Dream on Sunday 1st July at 5.30pm Tickets available for sale soon.

An Inconvenient Sequel Truth to Power
Transition Bewdley in partnership with St. George's Hall is sponsoring a showing of An Inconvenient Sequel - Truth to Power on Monday 16th April at 7.30pm at The Hall. Tickets at £2 are available from St. George’s Hall cafe and online. "Ten years after the Academy Award winning 'An Inconvenient Truth' brought climate change to the forefront of mainstream culture, former Vice-President Al Gore continues his tireless fight to educate the next generation of climate champions.This compelling follow-up shows that while the stakes have never been higher, the solutions to the climate crisis are still within our reach."
The film will be followed by a discussion with those interested in looking at what we can do at a local level to help counter climate change. Many of you will be familiar with the four Rs of sustainability: Reduce, Re-use, Repair, Recycle, but are there other actions that we can take to influence others to make the necessary changes to reduce global warming and the effects on our climate?

Guide Dog Spring Fayre and 'Pat n Chat' Event
Saturday 28th April from 11a.m. to 3p.m. Wribbenhall Parish Room, Kidderminster Road, Bewdley We invite you to join us, as we continue to raise money to name a puppy. These events are always very popular and a great opportunity to meet local puppy walkers, their puppies and find out about the whole process of training a Guide Dog. The puppies will vary in age from 8 weeks through to 14 months. This is the first time we have held such an event on a Saturday, in order that more people can attend. We look forward to meeting you. Foraging in the springtime
I have been leading foraging walks in the Wyre Forest area now for a few years, mainly on the Ribbesford Trail and more recently in Habberley Valley. I have found that many people are interested to know what might be edible in natural areas when they are out walking.
Foraging is a tremendously rewarding skill to acquire even if you only learn to recognise one or two plants. It makes walking in nature a lot more interesting.You can also get a real vitamin and mineral boost from eating wild foods, provided you know what you are looking for.You may also learn to your surprise that you already have edible plants in your garden you didn't know about. Foraging is part of human nature and children in particular seem to take to it well when on supervised walks.

From last month, when you pop into the Library you may have noticed a new face; this belongs to Emily, our recently appointed Team Leader. Emily is a talented and enthusiastic colleague who comes to us from Bromsgrove and will be leading our teams at Bewdley, Stourport and Tenbury libraries. She has previous work experience with the Science Museum in London and the National Trust, and is looking forward to working in Bewdley and meeting you all. April in the Forest
One of the benefits of foreign travel is that it can open our eyes to the good things we enjoy at home. I got back from a long (and very enjoyable) trip last month and despite the cold weather and pre-springtime appearance of our countryside was delighted to see the familiar patterns of our fields, woods and hedges again. Although we notice the decline in our songbirds, butterflies and other wildlife we can also reflect that we are still richly blessed and should celebrate and enjoy what we have. The obvious activity of the birds around my garden feeders is encouraging to see and tells me that it’s my time to get busy outside too. The Wyre Community Land Trust have finished the thinning of oaks around Uncllys and the forest is now quiet for the nesting season. A new owl box has appeared at the woodland edge and I’ll be keeping an eye on any activity. The bird boxes in the orchard and garden have been checked over and cleaned out, and we’re trying to keep some vacant for the redstarts and other migrants that arrive this month by blocking the holes to blue and great tits.
We should see bats (Common and Soprano Pipistrelles, Brown Long-eared, Whiskered, Brants and Daubenton’s) this month too as they come out of hibernation with a big appetite for flies and moths. There are 40 bat boxes fixed to oak trees on the farm but I don’t know how many are used for hibernation and breeding because I’m not qualified to check them - that’s something I intend to start putting right this year. I have an eye on the shoots of Lily of the Valley, mainly because good sites for this lovely flower in our vicinity were disturbed last year: one by digging to repair a water leak and another by tree thinning work. I’m sure they will recover but it may take a few years for their rhizomes to make replacement growth. In the long term the upheaval may have done them good by spreading them into new areas and the increase in light reaching the forest floor should encourage flowering. The scent of the little flowers, which appear in May, is surprisingly strong and beloved by bees.
Despite the very kind comments of editor Margaret in last month’s Bridge I can only claim to be ‘hugely knowledgeable’ in the realm of trivia, and rely largely on other sources of information for the content of my articles. ‘The Nature of Wyre’ by the Wyre Forest Study Group, ‘The Natural History of an English Forest’ by Norman Hickin, ‘The Wild Flower Key’ by Francis Rose, ‘Flora Britannica’ by Richard Mabey, ‘Fauna Britannica’ by Stefan Buczacki and other volumes pile up around me as I write, and the internet gives me the British Trust for Ornithology, RSPB and other specialist sites. I recommend them all.

Transition Bewdley Repair Café: tool sharpening One of the services most in demand at the Bewdley Repair Café is sharpening of garden tools and kitchen implements.Visitors will have seen our volunteer working non-stop, sparks flying as he gives new life to a long queue of tools.
He is Peter Whittle, age 72, who lives between Bewdley and Stourport. Peter provides a sharpening service at Bewdley Repair Café, occasionally helping out at Kidderminster.
Peter writes, ”My career has been largely in analytical chemistry, predominately the testing of environmental samples for trace pollutants. I still undertake some work, visiting testing laboratories in the UK and Middle East to assess competency and compliance to an ISO standard for accreditation.
In spite of achieving a Ph.D. in chemistry, I always said, and only partially ‘tongue in cheek’, that the most useful thing I did at school was ‘O’ Level woodwork. It provided basic skills, including the sharpening of tools, that have lasted me a lifetime, helping with DIY and woodworking projects such as building log stores and a shelter for our alpacas, and my retirement hobby of woodturning. As part of my hobby, I have studied the different systems that are available for sharpening and acquired the kit I considered useful, which I use at the Repair Café.
Without grinding wheel facilities, a limited amount can be done to maintain sharpness at home, as most items require the cutting edge re-profiling at some stage. The Repair Cafés provide a valuable service in re-profiling and sharpening of blunt tools, the sharpness of which can then be maintained at home for a while using a ‘steel’, whetstone or diamond plate. Sharpening services are not readily available commercially these days and can be expensive.
For a person like myself, the Repair Café provides some interesting technical challenges and the opportunity to make peoples’ lives a little easier. The bulk of the work involves kitchen knives, scissors and garden tools, but the Bangladeshi fish slicers (rather like a billhook mounted on a steel frame) were perhaps the most notable challenge. Most items except saws are attempted; saws take too long to sharpen in the time scale available.”
The sharpening team has recently grown with the addition of Tim, a young blacksmith, at 24 our youngest volunteer, and 89 year old Tony, a retired engineer (our oldest volunteer by a small margin). With three experts working together, the long queues are disappearing and we urge everyone to look out their secateurs, shears, edging spades and other tools ready for the new gardening season.

Kidderminster Hospital League of Friends
Dedicated volunteers with a Kidderminster charity will take some beating when it comes to long service! Six members of the team at the coffee shop run by the League of Friends at Kidderminster Hospital are getting close to a double century of serving drinks and light meals to visitors and staff.
The Super Six have put in shifts for a total of 190 years between them and include 90-yearold Helen Whittington and Pauline Grainger who have both worked there for 37 years. Jean Rumsey, who is 92 this year, and Audrey Spells have notched up 32 years apiece while Pat White and Rosemary Lester have completed 27 and 25 years respectively. Mrs Rumsey said: “We are part of a big family of volunteers and have made some wonderful friendships along the way. We all feel it is important to support our local hospital and many of our customers feel the same way.”
League of Friends volunteers also operate a refreshment trolley serving hospital patients and staff at the Treatment Centre, and also offer a Wayfarers service to meet, greet and direct patients and visitors around the busy Bewdley Road site. The charity also raises funds through a volunteer-run shop in Kidderminster’s Swan Centre.
All profits from the retail outlets along with donations and memberships enable the Friends to support services at the town hospital and to provide extra amenities for patients and staff where they are not available through the NHS. The generosity of the Wyre Forest community has helped the Friends raise more than £4.5 million since it was formed in 1959.
The League of Friends is always on the lookout for new faces to join its large band of volunteers and anyone interested should contact administrator Natalie Mason on 01562 67653 or pick up an application form from the hospital coffee shop or Swan Centre charity shop.

Wyre Forest Young Musician of the Year 2018
This competition, now in its fourth year, took place on the evening of Saturday 10th February in St. George’s Hall, Bewdley. A large audience was delighted by the standard of performances from sixteen young musicians aged between 12 and 17.
The genres of music on display during the evening was very wide – starting with a classical flute piece from Nina Southall and ending with a performance of their own composition by the acoustic duo Ivywoods. The standard of the competition was very high and the judges, pianist and accompanist Angie Allard, musicians Steve Harley and Oliver Carpenter, led by head judge, choral leader Alastair Elliott, had difficult decisions to make on the winners of the various categories. The winners of the categories were: Best Solo Instrumentalist: Danny Bold (Piano) from Bewdley Best Singer: Tom Southam from Stourport Best Classical Performance: Hector Coley (Organ) from Mamble Best Performer 14 and Under: Dylan Bold (Piano) from Bewdley Best Composition: Hannah Law of Stourport with her song “Love Seeps Through” Best Group Performance: Rachel Howles and Danny Bold Wyre Forest Young Musicians of the Year: Rachel Howles and Danny Bold
The evening was completed by a finely performed set from the 2017 winners, Mayfli (Anna Bale and Izzy O’Dowd). Our thanks to all the contestants, not just for their super performances but also the great support they showed to their fellow competitors.

Volunteering at Bewdley Museum
The Bewdley Museum opened for 2018 in early March and we are looking for new volunteers to join us. The museum currently enjoys help from approximately forty volunteers who are invaluable to the operation of the museum and are involved with helping with activities, exhibitions and events, clay pipe and rope making demonstrations, gardening, collections care and cataloguing and manning the air raid shelter. Bewdley Cricket Club is located on High Street, sandwiched between the idyllic River Severn and Red Hill at its Lower Park Headquarters. Set amid some of Worcestershire's finest rural scenery, the ground is considered one of the prettiest in the county. The ground is the perfect backdrop to any celebration, be it a birthday, christening, or wedding, and the wonderful out door space is complimented by a large furnished patio area. The clubhouse, having been entirely refurbished in 2012, boasts a fully licensed bar with a range of draught beer and has the capacity for parties up to 100 people. With a fully equipped kitchen, the club is able to host self catered events and has seating capacity for up to 50 people. Behind the Baton
Following the post-Christmas lull, the Spring music season is in… um.. full Spring now! Around the time this publication drops through your letterbox, we will be performing our annual Bewdley Passion offering. This year, we will use John Stainer’s “The Crucifixion” as our musical vehicle for telling the Easter story. Once again, I have had the great privilege to assemble a wonderful chorus of singers from Bewdley and the surrounding area. I am very lucky to have so many excellent choral singers at my disposal and our now regular Good Friday offering is one of the highlights of my musical year. I hope that those of you who attend will enjoy the experience.
The Wyre Forest Young Musician of the year competition continues to go from strength to strength. Another great evening at St George’s Hall ended with Rachael Howells and Danny Bold winning the overall prize with their tremendous performance of Nina Simone’s iconic “My Baby Just Cares for Me”. It’s a difficult song to cover given the unique talents of Nina Simone, but it was brilliantly performed and really wowed the audience. At the other end of the musical spectrum, we were also entertained by a young lad from Mamble, Hector Coley, who performed Boellman’s thrilling Toccata on the organ at St Anne’s. Another eclectic evening, showing the range of young musical talent the Wyre Forest has to offer. (A list of all prizewinners is on page 27. )
To finish, something to look forward to is on the 5th May when Bewdley Choral Society (now with over 70 members) performs Elgar’s expressive “The Music Makers”. An expansive and colourful Cantata with significant choral and orchestral challenges. We have a wonderful Mezzo Soprano soloist joining us for the evening as well and it should be a real treat for Elgar fans with his Serenade for Strings also included in the programme. The work is full of drama, emotion, excitement and many well-known Elgar themes from Dream of Gerontius and the Enigma Variations. It’s a work with great momentum and I suspect it will be one of the fastest 45 minutes of music you ever experience. As always, and like every musical event in the area, Bewdley Choral Society is very grateful for the support of their audiences and I do hope to see many of you there. The beginning of our Soroptimist year this month is going to be a very busy one. Following our first Business meeting on Thursday 5th April when we shall welcome and induct our new president Sue Merrill, our club hopes to have a stand at the Bewdley Community Showcase event on Saturday 7th April. Another entertaining Afternoon Tea with Henry Sandon, the Antiques expert, has been organised for Thursday 12th April, 2.0 pm Baxter Church Rooms, Kidderminster: admission £7. Bewdley Carnival Thank you evening
Bewdley Carnival committee recently held a thank you evening for people who helped on last year’s Carnival day. The day was a great success and was enjoyed by many people, both local and visitors to the area.
The princesses on their float always lead the Carnival Parade. 2017’s princesses were Elsie Claydon age 7 and Dallas Dior Loveridge age 7 from Bewdley Primary School and Mya Smith age 6 and Xjaela Mai Braithwaite age 6 from St. Anne's Primary School.
Bewdley’s Mayor, Cllr. Anna Coleman presented the girls with a framed photograph of themselves in their beautiful dresses that had been kindly sponsored by Mrs Clifford from the Mug House of Severn Side North, Bewdley.
The evening was also attended by Consort Roger Coleman, Deputy Mayor LInda Candlin and Cllr. Phillip Edmundson. Irish Dancing was performed by Megan Ince.
The committee are now in the throes of arranging this year’s Carnival, taking place on 9th June. For information about the day or to volunteer to help, please ring 01299 401842.

Riverside Dementia Café

For the last eighteen months, Riverside Elim Church have been running this support group twice a month at Riverside Church Centre in Dog Lane. The Dementia Café is run by volunteers with nursing and care qualifications. Clients are encouraged to participate in a variety of activities and have a two course cooked lunch. Activities include music, drumming, singing, crafting, board games, darts, skittles and dancing.
Liz Walton, a member of the Church describes how the Dementia Café came to be set up:
“Two years ago I felt God had prompted me that there was a need in Bewdley regarding support for vulnerable people with Dementia. I prayed about this and discussed the idea with our Pastor Nigel Tween. We began by running a group on the first and third Thursday every month, held at Riverside Church in Dog Lane, Bewdley. The first six months was a trial period to see how this went. Now eighteen months later, we have a regular group of people with various needs, who are at different places on their dementia journey. All of our attendees and their carers have become our extended church family. We keep in touch in between meetings and offer any support at home if needed. Our philosophy is to provide person centred care, delivered in a safe stimulating environment. Over the last 18 months we have had museum trips, lunches out, riverside walks, craft sales, coffee and music mornings, pantomime trips and a visit to the seaside. This ministry is growing as is the need to provide this type of support within our community. We have a great group of volunteers who bring a wealth of life experience and skills.
We were recently awarded a grant of £1,000 from the Wyre Forest Localism fund. This will enable us to expand our craft materials, and also the outdoor activities during the summer, which is brilliant.
