The Bridge June 2018
Ring a bell!
Church Service – Royal Wedding - New Year – National Celebration – Local Weddings – Funerals – and just for fun! Local people in Bewdley have been ringing the bells in St Anne’s Tower from at least the 1500s. Our ringers are traditionally from all walks of life and these days are from all faiths or none; there is no need to be musical or strong. We just enjoy the teamwork, mental and physical exercise, being part of an amazing sound, and having a lot of fun.
A uniquely English tradition: Many nations across the world use bells to bring people together; they are either swung on a pivot until the clapper strikes the bell, or are fixed to a frame and struck by a hammer, but in the 17th century the English – always great engineers invented their own unique way of ringing bells. An English bell is fixed on a rotating wheel that is controlled by ropes, making it possible to easily swing even the heaviest one once the momentum of pulling the ropes places it on its head – then all that is required is for a rhythmic draw on the rope to pull it off balance and assist the weight of the bell in keeping its momentum going. Controlling bells in the English way allows us to use the unique rhythmical patterns that you hear. English bells attract tourists and enthusiasts from across the globe to hear that special sound singing out from our cathedrals, churches and clock towers.
Love Bewdley? Then love its ancient bells: Why not be part of an important aspect of Bewdley’s ongoing traditions in the community, make new friends, and enjoy the social activity? Why not consider joining us so that the bells of St Anne’s will continue to ring out over the town in the years to come? Bell ringing is a skill for all ages (generally 10 years +), individuals, families or groups, and is very inexpensive fun. Not only that, you will have the opportunity to ring bells wherever you go, and to explore those parts of our churches and ancient cathedrals that the public rarely have an opportunity to see. The bell ringers at St Anne’s meet every Wednesday evening between 7:45pm and 9:15pm and you will be warmly welcomed if you would like to come along and see what we do. There will always be members with a DBS registration present for younger ringers. Phone Val on 01299 896512 or 07534 082858 if you would like to know more details or have questions to ask.

Summer Reading Challenge at Bewdley Library
This month will see the start of our annual Summer Reading Challenge, which this year is themed 'Mischief Makers' and features characters from the (updated) Beano comic.
We are looking for volunteers aged between 14 and 24 to help with the delivery of the challenge. This would involve helping children to find books, discussing what they have read, shelving returned books and helping with the distribution of incentives such as stickers and bookmarks. There will also be an opportunity to help with organised events if you so wish. You can do as little as five and a half hours (that is the minimum number of hours) or more; it's up to you.
This volunteering would provide you with important experience to put on a CV. It counts towards the Duke of Edinburgh award volunteering section and may be useful for anyone considering a course in childcare or education. It lets people know that you have done something for your community in your own time, and can help give you a useful confidence boost when you later start applying for courses or looking for that first job. Have a look at the testimonies of former volunteers to see how helping with the Summer Reading Challenge could help you towards your future – you can find them at readinghack.org.uk. Pop into the library and ask for more details if you fancy it!

Welchgate in May
Furniture removal Welchgate style
The recent road closure in Welchgate for gas mains installation afforded the opportunity for local residents and shop owners to repair and decorate their frontages and for furniture to be moved. Unable to get the bed out of the upper boudoir, my neighbour and friends helped manoeuvre the furniture out of an upper story window which had to be removed in order for the bed to be passed through - common practice in Welchgate where houses have extremely narrow and twisting staircases built during the 17th Century and in some cases earlier. Wyre Forest District Council also took the opportunity to plant three new flower beds including three cherry trees and lavender plants for the bees. (See front cover) Phil Lea
Congratulations and apologies!
Last month we reported that Mooch Gifts and Home of Load Street, Bewdley were finalists in the High Street Hero award sponsored by TSB. Unfortunately we got the name of the owner wrong and apologise to Jon May and Luke Jacks who have run the business since it opened.
As we go to press we have just heard that Jon and Luke have won The Greats Gift Retailer Award for the best Independent Gift Shop in the Midlands at an award ceremony in London. Congratulations to them both and best wishes for your continued success in Bewdley.

Transition Bewdley Repair Café
Elaine Youngjohns is one of our Garment Repair Volunteers at Transition Bewdley Repair Café. She can be seen at most sessions operating her antique sewing machine. She writes, “I've lived in Wribbenhall for almost 33 years. Most of my working life has been spent in the caring profession as a Community Nurse specialising in learning difficulties - prior to this I spent a brief time working in an Occupational Therapy department at a psychiatric hospital, teaching patients various handicrafts. I was born at Kidderminster in 1945. The ethos at this time was make do and mend, hence my parents were very thrifty. My Mum made all my clothes (my two older sisters included) or we wore recycled clothes which Mum managed to acquire. We were taught to sew, knit, mend clothes, sheets, darn socks and more. My favourite time was sitting with my Mum, turning the handle of her Singer Sewing Machine (now in my possession) while she guided the fabric through. My Dad worked at Carpet Trades and periodically managed to obtain offcuts of brightly coloured felt which were manufactured at Long Meadow Mills. I recall the excitement when he produced the brown package which revealed this treasure! This provided us with many happy hours of creativity as we utilised the felt by making felt toys cut out from patterns. My Dad was very resourceful and practical, mending all household appliances, plus our shoes, handbags, bicycles etc. He was also very creative, making objects from recycled copper and brass. My skills passed down from my parents have stood me in good stead and are particularly useful in my role as a sewing repairer. As a lover of pre worn clothes, I fully appreciate people's attachment to their garments and feel it's a privilege to be entrusted to repair a cherished item. I also think repairing creates a feeling of goodwill as positive energy is exchanged. The types of repairs presented are patching and repairing seams and pockets, hand mending holes in sweaters, fitting new fasteners, hemming, mending toys and much more. It's a pleasure to work at the Repair Café; I enjoy the camaraderie and social networking with repairers and customers alike where much information is exchanged.” The June Repair Café will be on Saturday 16th June at St. George’s Hall, Bewdley from 10.0 – 2.0 and we look forward to welcoming all our visitors coming with a range of items from garments to radios and vacuum cleaners to garden shears to repair and sharpen. Any queries or offers to volunteer, please contact John Rhymer on 01299 403424. Fabric Sale: Doughtys Fabrics are bringing their fabrics to Trinity Methodist Church, Churchfields, Kidderminster, DY10 2JL on Thursday 28th June 2018 from 10.30 to 14.30.This is an annual event organised by Kidderminster Forest Quilters. 37

N.G.S. Gardens Open 16th and 17th June Stottesdon and Chorley, Shropshire
Situated in unspoilt South Shropshire countryside, the villages of Stottesdon and Chorley are opening up to 13 gardens on June 16th and 17th in aid of the National Garden Scheme. The N.G.S. donates the money raised to mainly medical related charities and is a major donor to hospices.
Opening hours are between 11 am and 5 pm. Tickets cost £6 and are valid for the two days. Children under 16 are free. Dogs are allowed in most of the gardens but must be kept on leads. Refreshments, including light lunches and traditional afternoon teas, are available on the old bowling green.
There is something for everyone: spacious gardens and cottage retreats, smaller ones with features or unusual plants, high and low maintenance and one designed specifically for those with disabilities.Vegetable lovers are catered for by a garden focusing on the principals of permaculture, another the home of champion prize winners, and the use of raised beds, tubs and baskets. The theme for this year's container competition is "A Garden Fit for a Gnome" and will be judged by the visitors to the gardens.

June in the Forest
Guess the creature! Well, the hands are human, but what of the other? Read on to find out.
When the sun climbs and makes its power felt nothing could be happier than the forest’s cold-blooded inhabitants. Lacking the ability to regulate their body temperatures using their metabolism, reptiles need to absorb energy from the sun in order to move out of first gear. Finding a warm, safe place to bask can be a problem: the shadow of a buzzard or footsteps of people will send them shooting off for cover. At the farm we have sections of corrugated iron placed on grassy field and wood edges which are ideal basking places. So far this year one of the five sheets is regularly visited by a slow worm and a young grass snake. We still hope to see an adder on one of our inspections but I think we’re just a bit too far from their favoured haunts.
We do seem to be prime habitat for newts. I won’t claim that it’s all due to the completion of my beautiful pond because, as I’ve said before, newts don’t seem to be bothered with aesthetics. The water is seldom clear, being more akin to pea soup, but the newts love it. What they’re eating down there I don’t really know but the tadpoles which hatched from some frogspawn soon disappeared.
It was exciting to see the long, dark strings of toad spawn around the pond weeds for the first time this year in April and I’m hoping a number will evade the newts and survive to miniature adulthood. If they do they’ll leave the pond later this summer and head off among the vegetation in the garden (following my signs saying, ‘Slugs this way’) or into the forest. Newts, like the toads, can cover quite a distance overland, using ponds for breeding. Some of the forest’s ponds don’t seem to suit them and others where they have successfully bred in the past have been missed in this or recent years. A lack of tiny aquatic creatures for food would certainly account for this and the effects of shading and water temperature would be factors too.
If we are to be able to help provide and maintain the right conditions we need to know where the newts are - what species and how many – and that’s why a survey is undertaken by licensed newt handlers each year. This brings me back to my friend Val, whose hands are pictured holding a male Great Crested Newt upside down so that I can photograph its splendidly spotty belly pattern. Each individual can be identified and its reappearances can be monitored. We wish him and the rest of the Great Crested Newt population well and hope to see plenty of the conspicuous white eggs glued to pond vegetation all over the Wyre Forest. Linda Iles
