The Bridge July 2018
From the Driver’s Seat Drivers’ Hours regulations are a mine field that I navigate daily. In any one day, I can only drive for a maximum of 10 hours spread over a maximum of 15 hours from the time I start working. The longest period that I can drive continuously is 4.5 hours after which I am required to take a break of at least 45 minutes. Looking at the week as a whole, I can only drive for a maximum of six consecutive days after which I should have a ‘weekly rest’ of 45 hours. I can reduce this to no less than 24 hours but after another six days I must have a rest of 45 hours plus the amount I reduced it by before I can drive again. In addition to the above I am meant to have at least 11 hours rest between one day’s work ending and the next beginning although this can be reduced to 9 hours twice a week. All of this has to be considered when planning a programme of Day Trips and Holidays to sell to the public. We often get enquiries about hiring a coach for an evening event or nightclub. But if the return isn’t likely to be until 3am for example, it would be at least 12 noon before the driver can drive again, making them unavailable for a day trip, meaning one evening’s work actually ties up that driver for two days. Many consider these rules to be red tape, but when you consider that coaches can carry up to 70 people and weigh up to 25 tonnes when fully laden, they can cause a lot of damage and injuries or worse if the driver is not completely alert.
St Leonard’s Churchyard: the ‘Living Churchyard’ project The meadow area of the churchyard is certainly growing and starting many conversations. We are delighted that the diversity of the wildflowers has so quickly become apparent, with Ox-eye Daisies and Orange Hawkbit being particularly successful in June. We have also been pleased to respond to requests to make particular graves accessible. The next step will be to mow and clear the meadow, leaving the seeds to regenerate. A date will be fixed for August, and published nearer the time. Volunteers will be gratefully welcomed, as it is crucial to rake up the mowings effectively. We also want to take the opportunity to check back the more invasive bramble patches and some of the nettles, to ensure the increasing variety of plant and insect life is encouraged. Watch the August Bridge and the St Leonard’s notice board for details. Enquiries: Caroline Hall (carom.hall@gmail.com)

It's often been noted that if you are over about 50 and want someone to help you out with a bit of technological knowhow you are better off grabbing the nearest five-year-old. Well, possibly not actually grabbing. More bribing. Or otherwise making it worth their while. They will look pityingly at you, seize the piece of kit and unerringly just know which button to press. Galling, isn't it? Having been at the receiving end of just such assistance the other day I looked around for a compensating skill I might have along the lines of "Well, I bet they couldn't... transplant a primula denticulata; shorten a skirt; draw a convincing horse; knit a sock....". Sadly I can only do one of those things, but you get the idea. Electronically I have no bragging rights whatever. I think the snag with all these wonderfully time-and-trouble-saving devices that waste so much of our time is that you need to have been brought up with them, if you aren't going to have to spend hours working out how to use them. There's a sequence to learning how to operate something involving a memory card (I think that's the crucial gizmo but don't bother to tell me if it isn't) and if your schooldays were spent applying pen to paper you are far, far behind with much learning to do. Then there's the problem of having got the hang of it only to be confronted by a peremptory demand that you Download an Update. (Why not Upload a downdate?) Having pressed the requisite key and waited for a few millennia you switch on only to discover that you have to relearn another set of Howto's. That's if it still works. Me, bitter? Never. Just spare a moment's sympathy for any mistakes in this Bridge. I was probably suffering from existential sorrow and low self esteem after having been visibly despised by my computer. Margaret

Trimpley Heavy Horse Festival The annual Trimpley Heavy Horse Festival takes place on Sunday 29th July 2018 at Holbeache Farm, Trimpley, Nr Kidderminster. This is the home of the Holbeache Stud where Mike Clarke and his daughter Alison breed the very rare Suffolk Punch Heavy Horse. Mike and his family organize a whole array of activities from Art Exhibitions to Horse and Cart rides, tractor & trailer rides, donkey rides, fair, dog show, car boot sale, trade stands selling a variety of merchandise and refreshments. Many of Mike’s Suffolks will be housed in the stables where the public can view them easily and you will usually find Mike talking to anyone who will listen, up in the stables. The foals will be found in the stables too and these are always such a lovely sight. In the working field you will find many of the Horses working, ploughing and muck spreading and there is always a threshing machine working too; it is great to see how these beautiful creatures used to work the land. All the proceeds from the show are donated to several local charities but the main donation goes to the Suffolk Horse Society. This year’s show is on Sunday 29th July 2018. For general enquiries please call Mike on 07831 674018 or for trade stand enquiries please contact Mike’s daughter, Tracy, on 07531524280.

Balsam Bash 2018 Himalayan Balsam is a very successful invasive plant spreading particularly along river courses throughout the country. It outcompetes most native plants, reducing biodiversity and, because it's an annual, leaves the river bank bare in winter and prone to subsidence. It is a significant problem. A biological deterrent is being introduced but it's still very early days. Volunteer group efforts to pull up or cut down plants to keep it in check are really the only practical local answer at the moment. Bewdley Civic Society has been organising a campaign for several years now and it's become a successful annual event. This year it will take place between 10 am and 1.00 pm on Saturday 28th July, Monday 30th July, Tuesday 31st July, Wednesday 1st August, Thursday 2nd August and Friday 3rd August. Meet at the benches on Severnside South down from Bewdley Bridge. Himalayan Balsam is an innocuous plant. It is non-toxic, there are no thorns or stinging parts and, because it is shallow rooted, even large plants come up easily. No special equipment required beyond sturdy footwear and gloves although some find wielding a stick to be therapeutic. So if you do want to lend a hand do come along on any of the above dates even if you can only spare an hour or so. It can be quite a social event. For further information contact Steve Bent at stevenclivebent1@aol.com.

Cherry Fair 2018 This year, the Civic Society Cherry Fair, promoted jointly with Bewdley Museum, will be the weekend of 21st - 22nd July, the eighth such event since the ancient fair was revived in 2011. The Civic Society display in the foyer of the Guildhall will be accompanied by vintage cars, stalls and events with a 1940s theme organised by the Museum staff, hopefully offering something of interest for everyone as an enjoyable family occasion to begin the holiday season. During the Saturday and Sunday, live music and entertainers will add interest and atmosphere to the celebration. As usual, a selection of different varieties of cherry for people to compare and enjoy will be demonstrated. The intention is to encourage more interest in and awareness of the many sorts and tastes available. Modern, commercially viable, methods of cherry growing mean that with increased consumer interest and demand, old varieties may be rescued, supply may increase and prices fall. There will be young container-grown trees for sale at very reasonable prices, small enough to transport, suitable for gardens and as presents. We hope to cover our costs, but any profits from the sale of trees will go to help the work of Bewdley Civic Society. Alongside, members of Bewdley Civic Society will have videos and other items for sale, information about the continuous work of the Society, protecting this very significant town (since 1944 one of the oldest and largest Civic Societies in the Country) and every encouragement for you to help this work by joining the Civic Society. In addition, at a separate stall, Museum staff will offer fresh cherries for sale, any profits helping to support the Museum. So, come along in your thousands and enjoy a delightful afternoon, learn something about cherries and take away a tree or a bag of cherries, a memory of delicious fruit and a renewed enthusiasm for cherries and a Civic Society membership.

Hands-On! Is it me, or are we really seeing a big increase in people taking up the sort of handicrafts our grannies used to do? Looking through June's Bridge magazine, I saw knitting and crochet, painting and dressmaking, mending and cooking sessions going on. Could it be because now that big business has provided us with instant this and cheap that we have acquired a hankering for the slow, the handmade, the careful fashioning of something unique to ourselves and that will last a great deal longer? Apart from the cooking bit; that will go much faster than supermarket ready-meals. Perhaps this also applies to the sorts of things more commonly associated with men - though don't get me wrong, I know plenty of women who can turn their hand to things requiring hammers and screwdrivers, and I know for a fact that Lord Spencer, Princess Di's grandfather, did beautiful needlework. No, I was thinking that people are often less ready than they used to be to throw things out and instead look to mending or otherwise recycling them. My brother made a sawdust extractor out of a broken washing machine and a vacuum cleaner hose, and I'm sure he isn't alone in his ingenuity. I can't help thinking that this is all a rather good thing. Certainly Repair Cafe attenders seem to think so! Riverside Dementia Support Group enjoyed a wonderful day out on their recent canal boat trip with 44 people including the lonely and vulnerable who enjoyed a few hours relaxation, which also included a massive fish and chip lunch. If you know someone who might like to be part of this group then please contact Riverside church office on 01299 405535 or the group organiser Liz Walton on: 07760 496993.

Transition Bewdley Repair Café - Spotlight on Derek Taylor
This month the spotlight is on one of our younger volunteers. “My name is Derek Taylor and I am very much in the middle of the 20-60 age group. I have always had an interest in computers since I was in school, and most of my career I have been in IT support. I spent 5 years as a field service / network installation engineer, travelling the length and breadth of the country. For the last 15 years, I have been a technician at a Kidderminster Secondary school. I am a volunteer repairer for Repair Café Wyre Forest with no particular specialism – I’ll give anything a go! I have a general knowledge of a wide range of things, which makes me a good all-rounder from electrical or electronic devices, toys, tools or occasionally furniture. I love the challenge of not knowing what the next thing might come through the door to be repaired will be. I like understanding why something is not functioning, working out what is wrong and fixing it, and where possible, advising the customer how to prevent anything similar happening in the future. My most memorable repair I think to date is a 1960’s era Soviet Union cuckoo clock which had become tangled in its own winding chain. It took a while to untangle, but then it was running like ‘clockwork’.” You will meet Derek and our other wonderful volunteers at the next Repair Café on 21st July at St George’s Hall from 10am to 2pm. There will be no Repair Café in August, as so many of our customers are away but we will be back again from September. More volunteers are always welcome and we are particularly seeking someone who can assist with refreshments. Any enquiries or to volunteer, please contact John Rhymer on 01299 403424
Bewdley Carnival Bewdley came alive on 9th June as thousands turned out to watch the Annual Carnival. The committee will be announcing the final total but all areas of the Carnival day saw an increase in takings. We would like to thank everybody that came and helped both on the day and in the months before; and to all the people who came and supported the Carnival on the day.

Ringing the Changes Have you have ever wondered where that expression comes from? Well, that’s exactly what bell ringers do every time they ring; they participate in that uniquely English tradition “change ringing”. “Ringing the changes” is very much on the agenda this year for St Anne’s Bell Ringers in both senses of the phrase. We are actively looking for new ringers to join our team so that we can introduce them to the fun of change ringing and be part of a continuing local tradition. On Saturday 2 June we opened the St Anne’s Tower particularly for local people who were interested to have the experience of making that amazing ringing sound on our eight bells. Visitors of all ages came in a steady stream throughout the day – families, couples and individuals – to see what it was all about, to use the bell ropes under the careful tuition of our most experienced ringers, and to watch from above as these ancient bells were easily controlled by those in the ringing room. The day was exciting and great fun for everyone. Come and see us on a Wednesday evening between 7:45 and 9:15 pm if you missed out, or were there on 2 June and would like to do some more ringing!! I’ll take you to our leader: Meet our Tower Captain, Rob Carlyle, who has lived in Bewdley for almost all of his life and has rung St Anne’s Church bells since the age of 14 years. I asked him what had kept him ringing for all these years: “I love the social aspects of being a bell ringer.” I asked Rob what had been his most memorable moment: “I have had so many; but perhaps ringing the “Bow Bells” at St Mary-le-Bow in London stands out.” Finally, I asked him what was one of the funniest moments he could remember: “We rang 2000 “changes” for the Millennium in a Shropshire church, which took about an hour-and-a half. Part-way through, the trousers of the man on the tenor bell slowly slipped to his feet, but we couldn’t stop without losing the attempt so he carried on regardless despite the hilarity.” To see us in action be there at 7:45pm on a Wednesday, but hold on to the rope rails as you climb the spiral stairs to the ringing room. If you are unsure, just phone Val on 01299 896512 or 07534 082858 and someone will be at the Tower door to meet you.

This month, with holidays a mere one month away, we start an occasional series when Bewdley residents look back to their childhood and tell us....
What I did in My Holidays We begin with two of our residents looking back to the war years. I first saw the sea when I was six. My father's work during the war involved Forces Education, necessitating much travel throughout East Anglia, and in August 1943 he was able to combine lectures to troops with a family holiday in Hunstanton. The east coast was a high security area and the old Alvis (no boot and a small trailer for luggage) was stopped several times at road blocks. Recollections of the hotel are fragmentary - a cavernous dining room where childish voices were clearly to be muted - joining the queue of elderly men awaiting their morning devotions in a smoke-filled chamber labelled "Gentlemen". In retrospect, a private hotel, probably largely inhabited by permanent residents struggling to survive in a time and place when business was slack; ration books would have been handed in. It clearly gave satisfaction, Dad describing the food in a letter to his mother, ..."very good. Not bad for 4gns". The lasting impression was the sea. There were few people on the small stretch of beach that was not mined; the red and white striped cliffs, the daily sandcastles that somehow never survived the tide, and the days spent in the fresh air were a constant pleasure. Today the prospect of days in and out of the North Sea seem less attractive, but I was lucky then to have the experience denied to most children in wartime. James Hickson When I was young, it was wartime and no-one went on holiday. Travelling was frowned on and was very difficult. Posters everywhere asked, "Is your journey really necessary?". Here's the nearest thing to a holiday I remember during the war years. When I was 11 or 12 my father had a week's holiday. He took us all on the No. 80 bus thirty miles to St Albans. We went into the Abbey, looked round the numerous antique shops, then took our picnic to the park. Cheese and chutney white bread sandwiches, I seem to remember, and the treat of an Express Dairy Individual Fruit Pie. I also remember watching the long lines of men in shabby brown uniforms walking along the road. They were Italian prisoners of war who worked on the farms in the area. Then back on to the No. 80, upstairs, of course, and in the front seats if possible, for the long journey home. Janet Kirk 33

The talk by Sue Beeson on ‘Riding for the Disabled’ at our May Speaker meeting was very informative – such a worthwhile cause. Our next Business Meeting will be on Thursday 5th July at 7.30pm as usual at Baxter Church Rooms, Kidderminster. This month is going to be a time of great activity and excitement. On the 18th July our club will be 70 years young. So, instead of our usual supper/speaker meeting we will be celebrating our anniversary with a formal lunch at Spring Grove House. A number of local representatives as well as representatives from other SI clubs including the Federation President are expected to attend. There will also be guests from our German friendship club in Heidelberg. As the George Hotel is still undergoing building work, our monthly informal Coffee Morning, as usual on the last Thursday in the month, took place at the Shambles Café within the Bewdley Museum and will continue to do so until the George Hotel re-opens for business. Do come along and meet some of us from about 10.0 am onwards. There are NO official meetings in August. Visitors are always welcome! William Parsons – where did he live? The bell rang. It was my neighbour. “A man’s turned up at our house saying he’s writing a book about William Parsons and he says he lived in our house.” “No,” I said. “Your house was Thomas Bennett’s. William Parsons was over the road.” I was dashing out so the researcher, John, called round later. He was totally flummoxed when I explained he had the wrong house. “But there’s a photograph of it in a book about Parsons.” He had been out to Dowles hunting in vain for Parsons’ grave and my news did for him. He came to see me again the next day, refreshed from a night of pondering differing historians. He shared some fascinating information. William Parsons had made his money working for the East India Company. He had returned to England about 1797 with an illegitimate daughter called Penelope whose mother was Indian. He found her a rich husband, William Turton, and probably had Mill House (formerly Severn House) Stourport Road built for them. We know for certain the Turtons were living there in the early 19th century. I could provide John with information on that house, for which he was very grateful. Where, however, was Parsons? He died in 1816 and was “of Bewdley”, so was not living in the big house in Wribbenhall. We know his sister was married to Samuel Bowes who may have been in Winbrook, but that’s as far as we’ve got at present. This is just the sort of interesting puzzle in which local historians get embroiled! Heather Flack Live Wyres is a social club for single people. Bewdley Town Council News July 2018 The Late Cllr Miss Mary Fishwick Cllr Mary Fishwick suffered a heart attack on Saturday (June 2) and was rushed to Worcestershire Royal Hospital where she died in the evening. Mary was elected to the East Ward of Bewdley Town Council in 2014 and was just entering her fifth year as an active member in office. Bewdley Mayor Roger Coleman said: “Mary hardly missed any meetings and was an active councillor being on several committees. She was particularly interested in the preservation of our town’s treescape and a defender of our young citizens. Mary felt that life was for living and enjoyed networking in the town and will be a well missed character both in the town and at our council meetings. Mary was a hardworking and popular councillor who will be sorely missed by all that knew her. The Council’s thoughts are with Mary’s family and friends at this very sad time.” Residents also took to social media to pay their respects to Councillor Fishwick describing her as a “one off” and a “memorable character”. Trees and Hedges Now the summer is upon us, trees and hedges are growing fast. Householders are reminded that if they have a tree or hedge that overhangs, obstructs or otherwise causes issues on a public highway (including roads, pavements and public footpaths) it is their responsibility to cut this back. If an issue is reported or identified by a Council officer, a letter will be sent asking that the problem is rectified within 28 days to avoid any further action being required to make the area(s) safe. Town Maintenance You may have noticed one or two small jobs that have been completed recently to spruce up the town centre. The flower pots around the back of the church have been painted by our Town Lengthsmen Richard and Pete, the frontage of the old HSBC building has been painted at the request of the Town Council and Civic Society, more bench refurbishment is underway on the riverside and the summer beds and baskets (funded by the Town Council) are looking great. There is also some new planting of perennials and cherry trees in Welch Gate which are being looked after by local residents which was a project led by former Bewdley Mayor, Cllr Anna Coleman. If you spot any jobs that need doing, please e-mail office@bewdleytowncouncil.org. We only have a very small team, but sometimes it’s those little jobs that once done can make all the difference! Future Town Council Meetings Town Council meetings are held at The Guildhall at 7.00pm on the first Monday of each month unless stated otherwise. The next meetings are: 2nd July and 6th August 2018. Meeting Agendas and Minutes are posted on town notice boards and are available on the Town Council’s website www.bewdleytowncouncil.org. July in the Forest This will be the first year since we moved to Uncllys 14 years ago that there will be no House Martins or Swallows nesting here. I’ve done my best: there’s a dustbin lid full of damp mud for their nestbuilding and the old nesting sites are still there. A few individuals have visited on sunny days, raising my hopes and lifting my spirits as they swoop around the barn and house. The Martins like the gable ends of the house, and have even inspected the remains of old nests there, but nothing has come of it. In the past Swallows have nested in the barn roof and the eaves of the Studio, preferring a more open aspect (as the estate agents might put it). Picture by: Rosemary Winnall Cym Ivy
I wonder what’s going on? ‘Springwatch’ and various websites have mentioned that these migrants have had a peculiar and sporadic arrival this year, most probably caused by the long winter and storms. I hope they are making up for lost time somewhere. I miss their busy comings and goings and the little faces of the nestlings looking out for their parents’ returns with beaks full of flies. Did I say, ‘Beaks full of flies’? That may be the answer to the mysterious absence of the swallow family, as insects just don’t seem to be around in large numbers any more. When you come back from a car journey, is the front of the car covered in squashed flies? That would have been normal 30 years ago. I suspect this has something to do with the widespread use of insecticides in our gardens and, even more so, in the wider countryside. I see that Chris Packham has been talking to the media about an ‘ecological apocalypse’ creeping up on us in Britain. One of the trends he mentions is the decrease in insects such as moths and crane flies which come in at night through open windows in his home in the New Forest. I’ve noticed the same thing – something must surely be wrong if there are hardly any crane flies in the middle of a National Nature Reserve (and our children don’t know what a ‘Daddy long legs’ is!). However, I have heard a cuckoo several times this year (perhaps the same one each time), so the ‘Silent Spring’ isn’t quite upon us yet. And there is always hope that something can be done to reverse the evident declines in nearly all of our wildlife: look at the Pearl Bordered Fritillary butterfly, which is increasing in numbers thanks to positive efforts to increase its habitat along forest rides. The Red Kite too is being seen more and more in this locality, continuing its spread through England thanks to reintroductions from the small population in Wales, which survived the persecution of less enlightened times. Linda Iles
