The Bridge August 2018
August in the Forest As I write, the forest has just said goodbye to about 60 practising architects and students on a three day residential summer school. ‘Studio in the Woods’ is held annually but this time was hosted by the Guild of St George and Wyre Community Land Trust in the Guild-owned area of woodland known as Ruskin Land. The teams collaborated in the design and construction of six unique and individual structures using timber from the Wyre Forest which would otherwise have had little or no commercial value: everything from small laths and branches to planks of slab wood still with bark attached. The photo shows possibly my personal favourite which, as I took the picture, twinkled with light as the canopy above moved in the breeze. These structures were temporary but have still been an important part of the ‘Ruskin in Wyre’ project which celebrates the cultural legacy of John Ruskin and his followers in our neck of the woods (see ruskinland.org.uk ). By the time you read this I’m hoping that the summer’s drought will have been broken. The hot weather brought fruits and nuts on to ripen early, but the extreme water shortage last month halted flowering and sequential fruiting in many food plants. Bell Brook managed a mere trickle of water between pools although the old well that supplied Uncllys Farm maintained its supply. I could imagine the anxiety that people would have experienced in old days as they saw vital water supplies dry up and crops wilt. Some creatures seem to have done well this year. Pearl-bordered and Silver-washed Fritillary butterflies have been flying in the newly-created rides, warmed by the sun. Under the safety of our corrugated iron refuges we have seen many juvenile Grass Snakes and families of Slow Worms. When disturbed, the latter take a moment or two to take stock of the situation then can move off at speed, belying their name. They have the ability to shed the tip of the tail to escape predators and I have seen a few individuals with evidence of a regrown tail. As Norman Hickin says in ‘The Natural History of an English Forest’, ‘the scaling at the joint does not always appear to fit very well’. I’m fond of these bronze-coloured snake-like lizards, and would be pleased to have more of them tucking into the local slug population. The young, I learn from Norman Hickin, hatch from the eggs on being laid, or very shortly afterwards, and are silvery with a black line down the centre of the back. Lastly I’m pleased to report that Swallows came at last to Uncllys Farm and two nests were built in the eaves of the Studio. We hope to see House Martins joining them next year. Linda Iles

Welcome to August’s edition of The Bridge. This month’s magazine is full of activities designed to make the most of what we hope continues to be a glorious summer. The organisers of the new Bewdley Music Festival are hoping for good weather at the end of the month for their musical extravaganza. See page 15 to find out what will be happening in Maggs Meadow and Riverside North Park. Bewdley Museum has a full programme over the summer holiday with children’s activities each weekday as well as three concerts in Jubilee Gardens. See page 13 to find out more and turn to page 11 for details of an art exhibition in the Museum’s Foundry. Tim Carr of Bewdley Brewery and his wife are organising a Fun Day at the Brewery to raise money for The Ectopic Pregnancy Trust. Turn to page 39 for more details for how you can support this very worthwhile cause. Fancy getting some exercise and helping improve our local environment at the same time? Bewdley Civic Society are holding their annual Balsam Bash at the end of July and beginning of August. Turn to page 19 to find out why this plant is so damaging and what you can do to help. Also see page 19 for details of the next working party for the wildflower project at St. Leonard’s churchyard. Chris Grainger tells us what this year’s unusual weather has meant for his Wribbenhall dairy farm on page 31. He has been reading his father’s farm diaries and shares with us what haymaking was like 70 years ago. Some of you may recall the torrential downpour that added a special atmosphere on the banks of the Severn to last year’s production of Forest, River and Royals - the show that tells Bewdley’s story. This year, a singalong version of the show is taking place in the shelter of St. George’s Hall. More details of that and other events in Bewdley’s Heritage Festival on page 11 and the back page poster. I hope you enjoy August, whatever the weather. Gill

The ‘Living Churchyard’ at St Leonard’s Plans are now in hand to mow and clear the wildflower area, so that seeds are released and we can hope to see even greater diversity next year. Meanwhile, we are noting the importance of some areas which have already shown themselves to be particularly rich. We have also taken on board the concerns of those whose wishes for paths and cleared areas around the recent or more historic graves of their loved ones has been made known to us. The next volunteer working party will be on Saturday 18 August, starting at 10 o’clock. Please wear strong shoes or boots and gloves and bring cutting tools if you can. Refreshments will be provided. Any time you can give would be gratefully welcomed, and there is sure to be more to do if you get hooked and want to come back on Sunday! If you would like to investigate the environmental and ecological thinking behind the PCC’s decision about the wildflower area, you might like to look at the excellent website of Caring for God’s Acre, www.caringforgodsacre.org.uk. Balsam Bash 2018 continues.. Himalayan Balsam is a very successful invasive plant spreading particularly along river courses throughout the country. It outcompetes most native plants, reducing biodiversity and, because it's an annual, leaves the river bank bare in winter and prone to subsidence. It is a significant problem. A biological deterrent is being introduced but it's still very early days. Volunteer group efforts to pull up or cut down plants to keep it in check are really the only practical local answer at the moment. Bewdley Civic Society has been organising a campaign for several years now and it's become a successful annual event. This year’s Bash takes place between 10 am and 1.00 pm on Saturday 28th July, Monday 30th July, Tuesday 31st July, Wednesday 1st August, Thursday 2nd August and Friday 3rd August. Meet at the benches on Severnside South down from Bewdley Bridge. Himalayan Balsam is an innocuous plant. It is non-toxic, with no thorns or stinging parts and, because it is shallow rooted, even large plants come up easily. No special equipment required beyond sturdy footwear and gloves although some find wielding a stick to be therapeutic. So if you do want to lend a hand do come along on any of the above dates even if you can only spare an hour or so. It can be quite a social event. The Final Curtain By now most of you who are interested will know that I have left the Library Services as of July 2nd. Not retiring, as some cruel souls have suggested (as if I could look that old!) but moving house and skipping town. To Milton Keynes, no less. My husband has been working down there Monday to Friday for two years, and I can no longer put off going and living with him again. Now I realise that most of you out there would have to be dragged kicking and screaming from this beautiful old town, but as a city girl I am really rather looking forward to it. And yes, I have seen the concrete cows, they said to say hello. It remains only to say that I am very sorry to be leaving the Library; I shall miss our regular customers and especially my little friends from our Bounce and Rhyme sessions, which gave me the opportunity to fuss over babies and children and hand them back after half an hour! Thanks to their parents/carers who have given me such sterling support. I would like to thank our superhuman manager, Jackie Passey, who manages three libraries without the four pairs of hands and three heads the job requires; my dear friend and colleague Anna, with whom I have had a lot of fun working and shared some spectacular laughs, the best of which cannot be repeated; and finally my colleague Jon, who has volunteered to take over the baton of writing for the Bridge (a little too keenly, for my liking - I got the distinct impression he had been praying for the moment for a very long time). With his constant bickering, criticism, ridicule and lack of acknowledgement whenever I’ve been talking to him, he has ensured that despite my husband’s absence during the week I never once forgot what it feels like to be married. Thanks mate. So this is me, signing off.... Kay Sanderson Former Library Customer Advisor Bewdley Library

Pastures New After a challenging and fulfilling 11 year working partnership, mother and son team Judy Knight and Adam Wrighton who together have designed and created around 100 gardens – transforming the outdoor spaces and often the lives of many of their clients – have finally decided it’s time to move on to pastures new. Judy, who trained in Garden Design at Pershore College, will continue to offer a design only service alongside a brand new career as an RHS Tutor at Hartlebury Castle, Worcestershire – who will be launching RHS certification courses on 25th September of this year. Adam, who has been building gardens for over 15 years with his dedicated team of landscapers, has decided it’s time to move on and pursue his passion for permaculture and woodland management. “It’s been a real privilege to work alongside my talented son, who is highly regarded by our clients, and although this year is tinged with a little sadness, I think we’re both ready for a fresh challenge. I’ll still be designing gardens, but I’m also thrilled to have the opportunity to pass on my passion and knowledge via Hartlebury Castle’s new RHS certification courses, commencing with Level 2 Theory – Garden Planning, Establishment and Maintenance. This course is ideal for both young and mature students who wish to enter horticultural employment or simply increase their knowledge and passion for gardening. Hartlebury Castle is a fascinating Grade II listed building set in 43 acres of historic parkland, so I’ll be surrounded by inspiration and enthusiastic students, to keep me busy.” [Judy has been a long term supporter of The Bridge’s advertising pages. We wish her and Adam well in their new ventures. Ed.]

Bewdley and District Horticultural Society On Saturday 18th August Bewdley Horticultural Society will open the doors to St. George’s Hall for its annual Summer Show. Members will have spent a great deal of time to display their skills in a variety of classes, bringing flowers, fruit and vegetable to the very peak of their condition. Warming, feeding, cooling, watering are part and parcel of the grower’s repertoire of tricks, timing, and horticultural prowess in delivering the perfect item on the day. Judges examine, criticise, marvel and objectively review entrants against the strict criteria of the Royal Horticultural Society for fruit and vegetables. There are categories for domestic arts, covering the production of cakes, jams, bread and homemade lemonade. For those individuals that are creative and wish to demonstrate their talents, there is a handicraft section where work of high quality is often to be found. Children are encouraged to enter over a range of age related activities, free of charge. Continuing with themes of art and Bewdley there are photographic and art sections and finally we re-introduce a floral art section. Visitors will be able to buy plants and have a go on the tombola. The show is open from 10:30 until 3.00 when the Mayor kindly presents the prizes to winners. At 3.15, the annual auction of produce finishes the day. Stuart Williams
Summer Show 2018
Bewdley bats Bewdley is batty. I’m not talking about its human population, rather the nocturnal mammals who share our town with us. We are truly fortunate to live in an area where bats thrive. Why do bats like it here? The main reason is that food is abundant as the river provides plenty of small flying insects for them to eat and there are places for them to roost - they love old trees. Sadly, we’ve been cutting down old trees for decades and, over time, more and more bats have had to move in with us, using the gaps in roofs and walls to rest and hibernate. Unfortunately we tend to fill in those gaps, making it harder for them to find a home – please consider putting up a bat box or two in your garden! While males live alone (many of you will have solitary bats in your house without knowing it), females congregate in larger maternity roosts in the spring and give birth together. A couple of years ago we counted 343 soprano pipistrelle bats emerging from a maternity roost on the grounds of Bewdley School. If you’re lucky enough to have bats roosting in your house, chances are that you are the new arrivals not them, because bats will use the same roosts for generations. Roosts are incredibly important and vulnerable, which is why they are protected by law. Because bats only give birth to one pup a year, a disturbed roost can wipe out a whole bat community or take years to recover. For several years now Worcestershire Bat Group has run a bat walk for the public along the Severn in Bewdley over the August Bank Holiday weekend – it coincides with International Bat Weekend (and, entirely by chance, the Bewdley Beer Festival). This year it will take place on Saturday 25th August at 8pm, but with a difference. We will base ourselves in Riverside North Park near the pond, rather than going for an actual walk, so those with limited mobility can join in. If you’d like to come along to see and hear bats – we’ll provide bat detectors – and learn more about these fascinating creatures, then please email me for details: chair@worcestershirebats.org.uk. Bewdley residents look back to their childhood and tell us....
What I did in My Holidays This month we move from the austerity of the war years to the exciting freedom of the 1960s As a child I always had the freedom I needed to roam. I think we did in those days, so it was a natural progression to my first holiday with girlfriends as a teenager to St. Ives, Cornwall and a special milestone in my life. It was the perfect place to explore all the fascinating coves, magnificent surf beaches barefoot, birds, butterflies and wild flowers in the villages, the wonderful art and pottery being worked and for sale in shops or workshops discovered down remote lanes and sunshine everyday. Our landlady was a delightful, buxom woman with a strong Cornish accent, a broad, jolly smile and a desire to provide us with lovely meals and comfortable rooms. She summoned us to breakfast and evening meals by ringing a brass bell in the shape of a crinoline lady accompanied by a joyful call to come and eat. We had to be in by 11pm and always just made it trying not to giggle too much. In the evenings it was music, music, music wearing our trendiest bell bottoms, flowered tops, straw hats and sunglasses listening to guitarists on the beach, dancing to bands in the village halls or singing along at folk clubs where one night the entertainers had to dash out in response to the lifeboat siren. Did I mention the occasional beverage? Happy times. Ruth Hawkesford An abiding memory I have of childhood holidays in the sixties is packing my treasured plastic heart-shaped photo of Cliff Richard (free with the tops of three Kellog Cornflake packets) in a rather battered second-hand brown suitcase and carting it off either to a small static caravan park in South West Galloway or to a guest house belonging to Countrywide Holidays Association (CHA) somewhere in England on what was basically a walking holiday. I was lucky because we did manage to have two separate weeks away a year. It was only recently that I discovered that the holiday with CHA was free for my parents as my dad helped lead the walks and led the morning worship and, with my mum, ran the evening’s social activities for the other guests. Galloway was chosen not just because of its unspoilt coast and countryside but because we had farming relatives in the area and so time was spent playing tennis or French cricket on the beach, blackberrying and mushrooming, riding round the farm on a horse and cart, playing indoor curling and eating the most enormous farmhouse suppers. Simple, low-cost, outdoor holidays which I find myself replicating in my choice of how I want to spend my time away now! Lynne Fox 33

Bewdley Bike Week 2018
Families came in their droves to the fourth Bewdley Bike Week to experience a range of cycling events from the Bewdley Bike Jam to the Wyre Forest Cycle Adventurers’ Evening. Attendees tested their skills on varying terrain and tried a variety of different bikes, from electric bikes to those that steer backwards! The 20 and 60 mile rides saw riders overjoyed to complete the longest bike ride they’d ever accomplished. Several children learned how to ride for the very first time, whilst other learned how to safely handle the roads. Jaws hit the floor in awe of our wonderful local guests: Super Cycling Man and world explorers David and Bernie Locke who regaled us with stories of their adventures from Bewdley to the world! Throughout the week cyclists set off with local family led rides, jaunts for experienced riders, and newcomer and women specific rides. Even the Severn Valley Railway got involved, with riders of all ages exploring our traditional train line and our local cycling network. The programme provided fun cycling activities for hundreds of local people. The majority of events completely sold out with children and adults alike grinning with joy, pushing themselves through new challenges, and simply learning or remembering just how much fun bikes are. Comments from local residents who joined the events included “the peaceful bike ride with no traffic was heavenly” and “great idea, please repeat next year”. A first timer to the week’s events said: “my daughter has progressed so much, I cannot thank the Bewdley Bike Week team enough. Last week she couldn’t ride a bike and now she’s riding off road, down hills, and one handed. I can’t believe it!”. Bewdley Bike Week is provided by Overspoke Bikes, Bewdley Outdoors, Open Trail, Wyre Forest District Council Sports Development and local volunteers: Malcolm Garner, Richard Robertshaw and Ellie Hooper. They’d like to give a huge thank you to their sponsors and supporters: Rybrook BMW, Bewdley Town Council, Wyre Forest District Council, Big Bike Revival, Severn Valley Railway, Go Ape and Lions International. To find out more about local cycling opportunities and to get involved in Bewdley Bike Week 2019 visit: www.bewdleybikeweek.info, www.facebook.com/bewdleybikeweek or contact hannah@opentrail.co. 35

News from Grey Green Farm Wribbenhall So far 2018 has been a roller coaster year! A long cold winter, and late spring when the grass didn't grow, meant our cows were two weeks late being turned out into the fields. On 'Turn out day' once a year, and for about 5 minutes only, cows look almost excited and perform a bovine rendition of Riverdance; an impressive sight as half ton animals leap and gallop. This year by the time they went out we had used all our store of fodder for them. But then followed wonderful growing weather, and our grass silage crop came in at 6 tons to the acre - a bumper crop, coming with the expectation that - with a second and hopefully third harvest - we'd be set up for the winter. Now, as I write, the fields are parched and dusty. We are again feeding the cows, and our fodder for the coming winter is fast disappearing. We have some fields of barley to harvest, but that won't provide all the food we'll need. Watch this space... On a more general note, the beautiful weather has brought out greater variety and number of butterflies than we have seen for several years. Swallows are around in high numbers, so too are starlings, and sparrows are noisily busy. Sadly for the second year running we haven't seen the cuckoo. I wonder if any Bridge readers have been luckier. My father kept a diary, mostly a daily comment on the weather. In the summer months of 1948 he records long working hours, during haymaking from 9 a.m. till 11 p.m. on one day. This year in my own diary I noted that our silage contractors worked from 8 a.m. till 1 a.m. the following morning to harvest 100 acres of chopped grass. In just 2 days they brought in 1200 tons of grass to the silage pit. In 1948 my father's haymaking took over a week and was beset by 'cloud', 'damp', and 'blacksmith shoeing Captain' his working shire horse. Eventually the hay was made, some of it on the fields we now call the Front Meadows and now skirted by houses. As the summer passed he records first 'hand-hoeing beet', and mangles, and then 'horsehoeing beet'. I can only imagine the dust, heat and hard work this must have been. On August 10th 1948 he makes no mention of the weather but simply enters : 'End of Dog Days'. He would tell me that when the weather is hot, dogs should be left alone. But I wondered why he had put 'end of', when further entries mentioned hot days. So I turned to the internet, and found a different explanation. Dog Days were known to the Greeks and Romans as the hottest days of the year, and a time of 'lethargy and indolence'. These days were linked to the Sirius or Dog star. I think my dad knew more about dogs than astrology, so I take his advice about dogs. My own dog Izzie has taken to lying about in the shade...wish I could! Chris Grainger 37

Community Workshop and Café “The highest reward for a person's toil is not what they get for it, but what they become by it.” John Ruskin In his writings, John Ruskin emphasises the connection between nature, art and society. He champions the aims of William Morris and the Arts and Crafts movement and its revival of traditional handicrafts as a reaction against the industrialisation of Victorian Britain. This is just as relevant in today's society as it was then. The therapeutic nature of working with your hands and the effort of will required to master new skills gives huge pride and is a boost to self esteem. The opportunity to produce something well made and of beauty should be available to all. We are a small group of art and craft teachers with experience of teaching children and adults. Our not-for-profit Community Workshop and Café offers space, facilities and tuition for those interested in art and crafts. We consider ourselves very lucky to have found the Scout Hut (on the site of the old British Legion Old Pals Shelter) in Park Alley, High Street, Bewdley, recently vacated by the Bewdley 1st Scouts, and have been busy making it fit for our purpose. Its beautiful setting under Tickenhill, with the Worcestershire Way footpath leading to the Golden Valley and St. Leonard’s Church in Ribbesford is ideal for quiet contemplation over a cup of tea and a cake, a rest from dog walking, or the more active creative work going on in the workshop. ( What a place to go to work!) Please visit our website www.thecwcafe.com for details of the various courses that we and our craft worker friends could offer. We have financial support from National Lottery Funding and interest from NHS Occupational Therapists, the Community Stroke Team, Dementia Care, the Men’s Sheds Association, Home Schooling and local school classes. The new Café is open to all and we hope it will become a place for local groups to meet, daytime or evenings, or at weekends. Walking groups and dogs are welcome. Our Grand Open Weekend takes place on 4th and 5th of August with demonstrations of arts and crafts. Details on the website. Please feel free to drop in and chat any time and keep in touch through our website and Facebook page. Trevor Bowen

Far Forest Countryside Show The Far Forest Countryside Show is now well established as a two-day event over the second weekend in August. Since becoming a full weekend show three years ago, it draws around 10,000 visitors, attracted by the mix of traditional countryside pursuits, fantastic arena events and high quality stalls selling a wide variety of products, including food, wine, gifts and even livestock in the form of chickens. This year’s show on the 11th and 12th August promises to be better than ever with Saturday evening entertainment and a programme of talks and displays in the horticulture marquee. The theme of this year’s show is Roald Dahl. The Stannage International Display Team headline the entertainment in the main arena with their daring motor bike stunts and pyrotechnics. Other acts in the main arena include The Falconry Centre, whose spectacular interactive show is always popular, and displays by Zennor’s Dance and Musical Theatre Academy. The lower arena hosts two days of canine capers, including IQ competitions, a fun dog show to enter and Dog Agility and Obedience displays from visiting teams. There are a considerable number of animal exhibits where visitors can interact with farm birds, sheep, pigs, and horses among others, as well as take a walk with an alpaca.Continuing the countryside theme are displays of farm machinery including classic tractors and stationary engines. Displays of vintage cars and caravans contribute to the nostalgic atmosphere always created by the countryside show. Entertainment around the showground includes live music and rides and activities for the young (and sometimes the not so young). Look out for pony rides, tractor rides and much more. There will be a treasure hunt for children of all ages to find the Roald Dahl characters. All are welcome to attend in fancy dress. Food is, of course, of paramount importance and the show offers a wide range of sandwiches and homemade cakes provided by the Far Forest WI through cream teas to gourmet burgers. The food marquee is always a great attraction with locally produced products on sale to take away. A licensed bar and teas and coffees are available in the ground. Gates open at 9.30am on both days. On Saturday evening entertainment will go on until 10 pm with the bar open until 11pm, so that visitors can stay and be entertained in a relaxing atmosphere in the beautiful setting of the Callow Hill Showground. For those who wish to spend a full weekend at the show, overnight camping is available. Card and cashback transactions will be available on site. SI Kidderminster & District We recently marked the club’s 70th anniversary with a a celebratory luncheon at Spring Grove House. The club was chartered in 1948 with the first President, Miss V.G Stuart, a matron at the General Hospital. Since then our membership has reflected a diversity of local occupations in health, education, business and public life. In 1967 we began a very active Friendship Link with SI Heidelberg in Germany. Members of both clubs have enjoyed the friendship and fellowship of many visits and we were delighted to have four of their members plus partners sharing our celebration. Among our many guests we welcomed SIGBI president Susan Biggs and SI regional president Jan Bowden, as well as the mayors of Kidderminster, Stourport and Bewdley with their respective consorts, our local MP Mark Garnier and his wife and Councillor Marcus Hart and partner. Speaker Gillian Cain was one of the first women to be allowed to train at the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst and then the first woman to serve with The Royal Green Jackets. Our President Sue Merrill’s motto for her year of office: “The Next Generation” seems very appropriate and we hope that our club’s continued efforts will ensure that SI Kidderminster will be celebrating many more happy anniversaries. For more details regarding the club and its activities, please contact: 01299 266101 or kidderminstersorop@gmail.com. website link: http://sigbi.org/kidderminster-and-district/ Facebook: Soroptimists Kidderminster.

A magical SVR summer awaits! Sorcerers, wizards and witches are all invited to the Severn Valley Railway this summer, for a magical journey of adventure, discovery and family fun. The Railway kick-starts one of its most action-packed summers ever with two weekends of family-friendly, Train Tips workshops at The Engine House Visitor Centre throughout the day on July 21st-22nd and July 28th–29th. Families can board their heritage steam train for an exciting ride out to The Engine House Visitor Centre at Highley, where they can join the Train Trail to discover the clues to complete the quiz, design their own steam locomotive on the brand new colouring wall, get arty on the craft tables, have a boogie in the kids’ disco, get to grips with gargantuan outdoor games and outdoor play area, find the imps and fairies in the enchanting woodland walk – and more. Magic zooms in from July 30th-September 2nd when Witches and Wizards are invited to grab their wands and head to The Engine House for a full day of magical fun and play. Eagle-eyed visitors can join in the on-train quest to spot the owls hidden at each station along the line and find the letters to solve the magic riddle. Once at The Engine House, children can use their sorcery skills to track down the magical potion ingredients in Merlin’s Magnificent Treasure Hunt and make sparks fly in the Wizarding Disco. Family favourites will be showing at the cinema and kids can get creative on the colouring wall. If that’s not enough, get to grips with the outdoor games and play area and discover the fairies and imps hidden along the woodland walk. Families can marvel at the magic of nature with falconry displays from 11am – 4pm on August 25th – 27th featuring an amazing array of birds of prey and their handlers carrying out demonstrations throughout the day, followed by the opportunity to get handson in the Falconry Classroom. For an extra-magical experience, wizards and witches can get dressed to impress as they board the VIP Wizard Express on August 1st and 15th. Families can collect their waxsealed invitation and leave the humdrum world behind as their train departs from Platform 9 and whisks them to mystical lessons of wizardry at The Engine House, enjoying tasty treats and spell-binding magic tricks along the way. Once at their destination, masterclasses of trickery, including Broomstick Training, Wand-Making and Greenhouse Herbology await! Booking is essential. For more information and bookings see www.svr.co.uk or call 01562 757900. For more news and events, see the Severn Valley Railway Official Site or Families pages on Facebook.

Bewdley Town Council News August 2018 Trees and Hedges Now the summer is upon us, trees and hedges are growing fast. Householders are reminded that if they have a tree or hedge that overhangs, obstructs or otherwise causes issues on a public highway (including roads, pavements and public footpaths) it is their responsibility to cut this back. If an issue is reported or identified by a Council officer, a letter will be sent asking that the problem is rectified within 28 days to avoid any further action being required to make the area(s) safe. Town Maintenance You may have noticed one or two small jobs that have been completed recently to spruce up the town centre. The flower pots around the back of the church have been painted by our Town Lengthsmen Richard and Pete, the frontage of the old HSBC building has been painted at the request of the Town Council and Civic Society, more bench refurbishment is underway on the riverside and the summer beds and baskets (funded by the Town Council) are looking great. There is also some new planting of perennials and cherry trees in Welch Gate which are being looked after by local residents which was a project led by former Bewdley Mayor, Cllr Anna Coleman. If you spot any jobs that need doing, please e-mail office@bewdleytowncouncil.org. We only have a very small team, but sometimes it’s those little jobs that once done can make all the difference! Town Council Office Since our offices moved from the Guidhall earlier this year, our address is now 25(A) Load Street, Bewdley, Worcestershire DY12 2AE. The phone number remains 01299 400157. The offices can be found at the end of the passageway next to Perrigo Opticians towards the top of Load Street with a sign from the street. We no longer use the old mail box at the Guildhall and letters posted there may not always be dealt with quickly.
Town Council Meetings Town Council meetings are held at The Guildhall at 7.00pm on the first Monday of each month unless stated otherwise. The next meetings are: 6th August and 3rd September. Meeting Agendas and Minutes are posted on town notice boards and are available on the Town Council’s website www.bewdleytowncouncil.org. The website also contains information about the wider work of the council, including policies and applications for grants and memorial benches and plaques.
