The Bridge September 2018

Bewdley’s First Statue Bewdley’s most famous son, three-times Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin is to be celebrated on 27th September with the unveiling of a larger-than-life statue outside the old post office in Load Street more than seventy years after his death in 1947. The bronze - seven feet tall on a low plinth - remains under wraps until it is officially unveiled by HRH The Duke of Gloucester. However, an earlier maquette suggests we shall see an avuncular Baldwin, pipe in hand, in the town centre, which was very familiar to him, with his gaze directed towards the bridge... a local businessman turned country man. The sculptor, Martin Jennings, is best-known for his statue of John Betjeman in characteristic pose at St Pancras Station in London and, more recently, the towering George Orwell sculpture outside the BBC’s Broadcasting House. He decided on the height and very precise eye-line for Earl Baldwin during two site-visits with Civic Society Chair, Richard Perrin, and members of the Appeal Committee. Richard Perrin said, “I think the likeness really will match how the majority of local people saw him. He was more than the Prime Minister, he was a self-declared man of Worcestershire soil and in his time was much loved by the townsfolk of Bewdley and those employed by the family company in Portrait of Stanley Baldwin Wilden. He was known to be a man of simple currently on show in the Royal Academy country pleasure who had, following the Great War, donated one-fifth of his private fortune to reduce the size of the national debt.” The Statue Appeal Fund was launched by Bewdley Civic Society and raised the £130,000 by public subscription. Bewdley-born Stanley Baldwin succeeded his father as the town’s MP in 1908 and served for nearly 30 years until 1937, when he stood down as Prime Minister and went to the House of Lords (as Earl Baldwin of Bewdley). He was PM first from 1923 - January 1924 again 1924 1929 and for the third time 1935 - 1937. On 8th August 1925, Stanley Baldwin was the first person to receive the Freedom of Bewdley and in his letter inviting the Prime Minister to accept this honour, the Mayor at the time, Cllr A M Maunder, wrote: “…you are not like the big men of old, without honour in your own country; you, I might go as far as to say, are Loved and Worshiped in your own Country…”. In the speech Stanley Baldwin made later at the celebratory dinner in St George’s Hall, he said of Bewdley: “…When life seems most difficult and the fences unclimbable, I can turn back in memory and recollection to this peaceful spot by the side of the river where I first drew breath". I've been thinking. Not in itself anything to be particularly excited about, but here's what I have been thinking, which may be worth a few minutes of your attention. I have had some follow-on thoughts to my last editorial. I'm sure you remember it, but in case you need a prompt, it was about needing a toddler to help out with electronic gizmos. When the finished article came through from Martin for me to check, I realised that 'fessing up to not understanding how to persuade electronic machines to deliver the goods is very similar to that inexcusable comment about not understanding maths or science. It isn't a new thought and I have a friend from way back who taught physics A level for many years and has scathing words to say about people who blithely dismiss the sciences as not worth their time. As she says, you wouldn't like people knowing you had trouble reading and writing, so don't boast about being bad at sums. So I try not to allow myself to dismiss the sciences as beyond the understanding of ordinary mortals, but oh dear! There I was unashamedly dismissing electronic ignorance as perfectly acceptable. I went straight to the bookshelf and learnt how to reprogramme my smart meter. Well, all right, I didn't. I did, though, resolve to pop down to the library and explore the science section more enthusiastically; I shall also include a Scientific Fact in every editorial from now on. After all, if someone was to say, "Michelangelo? Never heard of him". Or "Can't stand all that Mozart stuff. What group's he in, anyway?" I fancy we would arch an eyebrow and firmly place them in the completely uneducated drawer and forget them. So here's my Scientific Fact of the Month. Goldbach's Conjecture: Every even number after 4 is the sum of two primes. Margaret

St George’s Hall wants to hear from you! It is 5 years since the re-developed Hall re-opened; during those years Cinema and Music in the Hall have become firmly established on the Bewdley scene along with the wide range of classes and activities organised by our Hall hirers. St George’s is run by a non-profit charity; to see what goes on visit www.thehall-bewdley.org.uk. It is important to make sure that the Hall is continuing to meet the needs of Bewdley residents. During September we will be contacting existing users plus organisations that don’t use the Hall, to find out what you think. But don’t wait to be asked – we want to hear from as many people as possible about: •

what do you like about the Hall: what’s good, and what’s not so good?

what additional new activities or facilities could be offered?

what else we could do to make our offer more attractive?

You can contact us in whatever form suits you: email to feedback.thehall.bewdley@gmail.com, leave comments on our Facebook page, speak to one of our staff or fill in one of our feedback forms in the cafe. We need your views. Let’s make sure we make the best use of this wonderful facility!

Community Lunches If you enjoy company and having a friendly chat over a two-course meal, then why not join us for our Monday lunch? There is no age limit but places are limited. To reserve a seat ring Joyce on 01299 404179. Our next lunch is on Oct 1st; it starts at 12.30pm and costs £4

Rug Rats Rug Rats is a fun time for little ones and their mums and dads to drop in between 9.30 and 11.30. Lots of toys and things to do and a time for carers to chat over a cup of coffee. Community News A familiar face to customers at the Coop is finally saying goodbye to the world of work. After 52 years behind the counter, Angela Pitt is taking a well-earned retirement. It all began in 1966. "I left Bewdley Secondary Modern school on the Friday and started at Timothy Whites in Kidderminster on the Monday. I worked there for many years, with breaks for the births of my two daughters before taking on a temporary job for six weeks in Superdeal in Bewdley, which became Spar, which became the Coop, and my six weeks became forty years! I finally retired in August; I'll miss customers and our little chats but I'll busy myself with my house and garden." We wish Angela a very happy retirement.

Sue Ryder Shop Sadly the Sue Ryder shop on Load Street has closed its doors after almost 20 years. It has been closed by Sue Ryder as the company policy is now for large format shops, which can create more income. As the last Manager here I would like to extend a personal thank you to all who have volunteered, donated or purchased from me over the last 12 months. I also want to assure people that the closing of the shop is nothing to do with the landlord who has been helpful and supportive. Kate Osborne

Funded by the Community The new Public Access Defibrillator (PAD) is now “live” situated on the wall of the Parish Rooms, Kidderminster Road. The defib has been bought for the community by the community through donations and fund raising events that have been co-ordinated by the Parish Room Committee. Funds raised not only paid for the defib machine but are also enough to cover any ongoing maintenance coasts. On 25th July Dianne Pearson from West Midlands Ambulance Service delivered training to some of the contributors. Training is not needed in order to use the defib machine as this state-of-the-art machine gives verbal instructions every step of the way but the training just gives added confidence and is very interesting. There are plans to provide more training so if you are interested please post your contact details in the letter box of the Parish Rooms. The party is over – the guests have gone! Our actionpacked 70th Anniversary weekend was a great success! Good weather, good company, good food. With our visitors from SI Heidelberg we all enjoyed a guided tour and Afternoon Tea at the Bodenham Arboretum. The formal celebration luncheon at Spring Grove House was attended by over 100 guests. So the summer holidays are over and our meetings will resume as usual at 7.30 pm on the first Thursday of the month, 6th September, with our Business Meeting at Baxter Church Rooms, Bullring, Kidderminster. Our Supper/Speaker meeting (7pm on third Thursday each month) at La Brasserie, Kidderminster will be on 20th September and we look forward to an interesting and informative talk from Kate Oakley on ‘Planting Hope”. Visitors are always welcome! For more details about the club and its activities and meetings, contact us: Tel. 01299 266101 or email: kidderminstersorop@gmail.com. September in the Forest This could be a very good year for mushrooms and toadstools. I say this because a period of heavy rain after dry weather usually stimulates the growth of the variously-shaped and coloured fruiting bodies, which we see on the forest floor and out in the meadows. The greater part of the organism consists of a network of fungal threads called hyphae growing through the soil, dead wood and leaves (and often visible if you turn over a rotting log or clump of dead leaves). Now that I’ve touched on fungal nomenclature, I can reveal that the network is called mycelium and that a specialist in the study of fungi is a mycologist. Mycologists have recently made some astounding discoveries about fungi and their importance to the ecology of many other species. The most startling is that by far the largest living organism in the world is an example of the fungus Armillaria solidipes (a species of honey fungus), which extends for about 4 square miles in the Malheur National Forest of Oregon. DNA checks have proved that this is all one organism and it is estimated to be from 2000 to 8000 years old. Unfortunately it is a killer of coniferous trees, travelling through the soil by means of strong black ‘bootstraps’ by which it infects other trees’ own root systems. I have found these honey fungus bootstraps in parts of my garden, and have to blame myself for introducing them via picturesque logs and stumps. Fortunately the relationships between trees and fungi are usually more benign and beneficial. Fungi cannot photosynthesise, absorbing nutrients and water directly from their surroundings and most notably from dead matter. However, many have evolved to form a close association with trees where they benefit from the sugars produced by the tree and the trade-off for the tree is a more effective system for gathering minerals from the soil and filtering out heavy metals. This co-operation of the fungal mycelium with tree roots results in an extensive ‘root’ system, which can link one tree with another over large areas. Particular fungi may be fairly specific in their choice of host tree. The Oak Milkcap, one of about 50 species of milkcap found in the Wyre Forest, is shown in the photo: the ‘milk’ which gives it its name oozing from the damaged gills. It is, I believe, exclusively associated with oak trees, whereas, for instance, the Fiery Milkcap grows under Hazel, Fly Agaric under birch and Slippery Jack under Scots Pine. Local gourmets may be rather sad to learn that edible truffles cannot grow in the Wyre Forest’s acidic soils, so plans to train up the dog or pig as a truffle-hunter would get us nowhere. I won’t get into the tricky subject of whether or not different fungi are edible: after an allergic reaction to eating a Common Puffball I prefer to steer clear of them all. Linda Iles

BEWDLEY FESTIVAL LITERARY EVENTS 2018 On Saturday 29th September, St George’s Hall will host its first full day of literary events featuring three writers who are both locally and nationally known. 11am COMPLETING THE TRILOGY – £5 Popular local writer and historian Fen Flack will be speaking about completing her historical trilogy. Fen Flack has kept us gripped, not just by her Ironside narrative, but by the demands of the physical production of her novels. Book three is now complete! Edmund Ironside's grandchildren, Margaret and Edgar, face the conquering Normans in this final novel, which weaves historical fact with exciting fiction. 2pm

WRITING, ROYALS and ROMANCE – £10 (Tea and cakes in the afternoon) Renowned best–selling author of recent historical fiction, Gill Paul, explains how she researches her novels and gets under the skin of the royal subjects of her books. As advisor to the BBC World Service on the marriage of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry, Gill will have some interesting anecdotes to share with us, no doubt. Gill’s fiction allows us to imagine ourselves in the shoes of princes and princesses, as she has done in her most recent novel Another Woman’s Husband. This book considers the royal relationships of both Wallace Simpson and Princess Diana and gives us fresh perspectives. Join Gill for tea, cakes and royal intrigue! 8pm LONG ROAD FROM JARROW – £15 BBC Radio 6 DJ, television presenter, writer, journalist, and critic Stuart Maconie comes to St George’s Hall to talk about his most recent book, Long Road from Jarrow. In October 2016, best–selling author Stuart walked 300 miles from Jarrow to London, retracing the famous Jarrow Crusade 80 years on. Stuart’s is an entertaining, impassioned, enlightening journey through Britain then and now. “... he is as funny as Bryson and as wise as Orwell.” – The Guardian. LITERARY EVENT DURING FESTIVAL WEEK! Tuesday 16th October 2018 at the Mercure Hotel – 8pm Simon Armitage JOURNEYS – £17 Arguably Britain's most read contemporary poet and multi–prize winning author, Simon offers a fascinating presentation of his book Walking Home, which includes readings, film clips and a musical score recorded by his band The Scaremongers. His relaxed and engaging delivery is at once emotional, comical and full of insights BEWDLEY FESTIVAL – LITERARY EVENTS 2018 Full Information and Tickets at www.bewdleyfestival.org.uk 33

Bewdley Conservation Area Residents’ Association Those of us lucky enough to live in Bewdley’s conservation area now have a residents’ association. It was set up recently by a group of residents who are keen to involve as many as possible of those living in the conservation area. Towards developing a vibrant and evolving community within our historical context, we will take positive and constructive approaches to improving our area. Membership of BCARA is open to all residents within the conservation area, and anyone adjacent who is interested in supporting the Association’s objectives. In our first year, the membership fee will be voluntary, with a recommended payment of £5 per household. The inaugural meeting of the association will be on Saturday 29 September at 11am in Bewdley Baptist Church, 61 High Street. At this meeting we hope to sign up members and find out more about the issues that conservation area residents consider most important, as well as ideas about how to address them. A few weeks later we will elect our Executive Team, and we will be pleased to hear from any of our members interested in standing for office. Please contact us on talkto@bewdleycara.org.uk if you would like to come to the meeting, or to find out more about the association. Jacky Griffin Chair of BCARA Steering Group

Film of the Book Night is Back Film of the Book night returns to our community cinema, Cinema in the Hall, on Thursday September 27th with the film that must have one the longest film titles ever – The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. It’s adapted from the book of the same name by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows. The novel, which itself is about books, publishers, authors and readers, centres on post-occupation Guernsey. Juliet Ashton, an up-and-coming writer, receives a letter from a Guernsey pig farmer who found her name and address in a second-hand book. The idea behind Film of the Book Night is that you read the book beforehand, see the film on September 27th (see the cinema programme on the inside cover) and join a book-group style discussion immediately afterwards run by Bewdley Festival Literary Events. Film of the Book Night leads in to Bewdley Festival Literary Events first ‘day’ on September 29th, which you can read about separately on page 27.

BOOK LAUNCH The Ironside trilogy is complete. In 2016 I published “Ironside – The English King who fought the Danes”, a thousand years after Edmund, an Anglo-Saxon, was King of England. Last year I brought out the sequel called “Edward The Exile”, which charted the European wanderings of Edmund’s children. The final book, “Margaret and Edgar”, is about his grandchildren and the trials they face during and after the Norman Conquest of England. It will be launched on Saturday 22nd September at Clementines’ Coffee Shop in High Street. Come about 10.30 a.m.; there will be free cake! I will be speaking the following Saturday 29th September, on my journey to get this last book published. The talk is called “Completing the Trilogy” and is part of the Bewdley Literary Festival Day. I’m on at 11 a.m. in St. George’s Hall. Tickets cost £5 and can be obtained from the Festival Office. Heather Flack (aka Fen Flack)

GO RING, RING, RING THAT BELL! Visit St Anne’s Church Tower on 15 September between 10:30am and 4:00pm as we take part in one of two exciting Heritage Weekends that are happening across the country. We are opening the Tower to visitors and especially to any local people who would like to see what happens inside, see our ancient bells in action, and even to try ringing one themselves. Bell ringers lost their lives during the 1914-18 War. Many bell ringers joined the 1914–18 war effort, and just after that war the Central Council of Church Bell Ringers wrote to all bell towers to compile the Roll of Honour. At the time 1077 men were reported as lost. More recent research has uncovered evidence of another 300 ringers who died in service. In total some 1400 bell ringers lost their lives in the Great War; a loss to them, their families, and a loss to their communities. Bells rang out all over England for the Armistice. When the bells rang out on the 11th November 1918 they announced the end of the most catastrophic war the world had yet seen. At the time, bells were at the heart of the community, marking events of great significance and communicating to people long before modern technology connected us. Bell ringing has always had a much wider function than its role in the church, but most of us today are not aware of its broad and inclusive service. On November 11 2018 at 11am bells will once again ring out across the country to commemorate the end of the Great War. Join the national campaign in 2018 and become one of 1400 new bell ringers across the UK to ring out the bells. The people of Bewdley are proud of their town and its traditions, so we need to pass on our skills to a younger generation in our lovely and historic town. Today bell ringers come from all faiths and no faiths at all to take part in this uniquely English tradition to enjoy the skills and challenges that are offered, and the companionship of other ringers; there are no religious barriers. This summer brought great sadness to the St Anne’s Bell Ringers with the unexpected deaths of two ringers held in great affection by us. First came the news of the tragic death of Marcus Smith, who was only 22. Marcus learned to ring with us as a young lad of 11 and as a promising young ringer was part of our team for 4 years. Only a month later we learned of the sudden death of the greatly respected Dr Mike Robinson. Mike was passionate about his faith, his ringing, and tremendously knowledgeable about a wealth of other things, including stained glass and the Severn Valley Railway; he was full of stories and anecdotes to amuse any listener. Like Marcus, Mike learned to ring at an early age and enjoyed ringing throughout his life. He is greatly missed by many people in Bewdley, the St Anne’s ringers, and the congregations of St Anne’s Bewdley, All Saints Wribbenhall and St Leonard’s Ribbesford. It would be wonderful if more Bewdley people decided to join us and become ringers to keep the bells of St Anne’s ringing out over the town for the next generation. 43

Stanley Baldwin On September 27th, the statue of Bewdley's famous son Stanley Baldwin is being unveiled by HRH The Duke of Gloucester. Here are some memories of other occasions when Bewdley welcomed him.

The Prime Minister comes to town.

Bewdley WI celebrates the centenary of the Worcestershire Federation of WIs The first WIs had played a part in the multitude of coping strategies that enabled women to endure their particular burdens and griefs through, and long after, the years of the First World War. In 1918, the Worcestershire Federation provided a unifying banner for the different groups in the county, and combined with the breakthrough, incomplete though it was, in women’s suffrage, there were new chances for women’s confidence and independence to be fostered. One of the milestones for the WI in 1918 was the launching of the first ever national WI campaign, for the provision of state aid for ‘convenient and sanitary housing’. Since then, the WI has launched annual campaigns on issues as diverse as sexual health, domestic violence, equal recognition in the workplace, libraries, nursery education, animal welfare and environmental sustainability. This year, Bewdley WI has been proud to be closely associated with the launch of a new campaign to draw attention to the urgency of recognizing that mental health is as important as physical health to the wellbeing of individuals and society. Do come along to one of our varied and always entertaining and friendly meetings, on the first Monday of the month (or the second if Monday is a Bank Holiday) at 7.30 in St George’s Hall. We also have interest groups and arrange outings: this summer to Hampton Court Castle. Pictured are Pauline and Liz, sharing the chair! Visitors are more than welcome to our monthly meetings. Please see our advertisements in this magazine for details, or the website: www.bewdleywi.org.uk Pauline Geddie and Liz Dewar, joint Chairpersons

The Wyre Community Land Trust has now been running for 10 years. We are a social enterprise that manages around 300 hectares of woodland and pasture in and around the Wyre Forest, on behalf of various landowners and Government agencies. To improve our skills base we are looking to recruit two or more additional directors (unpaid) to the Board. We are particularly interested in people from the local community with experience in one or more of the following fields, HR, communications, marketing, farming and conservation. If you might be interested please contact the Managing Director, Tim Selman, on 01299 488083 for further information and to arrange a visit to the Trust’s premises at St George’s Farm in Ruskinland. 47

Bewdley Town Council News September 2018 As August was a quiet month for the Town Council rather than report on meetings I’m writing an update on Mayoral events past and future. Since my Mayor Making in May, my wife and I, Cllr. Anna Coleman who is my Mayoress, have been very busy representing Bewdley at Civic services across the county whilst locally the Mayoress and I have opened or attended Bewdley Carnival, Stourport Steam Fair, Trimpley Vintage Show, school events, the Bewdley Chess Competition, Far Forest Show - the list goes on. I’m very pleased with how my charity events are looking with an Observation car trip on the SVR kindly donated by them this month. On November 13th I am hosting an event at St George’s Hall 6pm onwards by appointment for men over 40 who would like a PSA test. More info on booking to follow. Many of you will have seen us both watering the new shrubs and plants in Welch Gate too – what a time to have a newly planted community garden! Despite the lack of decent rainfall we now have a real picture as you come in and out of the town. By now of course you will be aware of the date of the unveiling of Stanley Baldwin’s statue. It’s been exciting planning the day and it’s going to be a great privilege as Mayor to be in the official line- up on your behalf to meet HRH and to guide HRH around our town, meet some of you and show him our popular museum. I hope everyone will come down into the town on the 27th September it will be a once in a lifetime event. In November we’ll be commemorating the official end of WWI; not only remembering the dead but those who were left maimed and traumatised for the rest of their lives. My Grandpa, wounded in 1917 was well enough to marry his childhood sweetheart a year later at 11.00am on 11/11/1918. On a more positive note plans are being made for our Christmas lights switch-on, and we as a council will be supporting events throughout the town such as Rivers & Royals concerts and light hearted theatre. We are particularly looking forward to the Youth makes Music events; our youngsters have to be heard to be believed for the quality of their performances. Finally during the 1st of two heritage weekends we’ll be having my Civic Service when we hope to be visited by other Worcestershire Mayors and chairs of Councils on 9th September. Roger Coleman Mayor Town Council Meetings Town Council meetings are held at The Guildhall at 7.00pm on the first Monday of each month unless stated otherwise. The next meeting is : 3rd September. Meeting Agendas and Minutes are posted on town notice boards and are available on the Town Council’s website www.bewdleytowncouncil.org. The website also contains information about the wider work of the council, including policies and applications for grants and memorial benches and plaques.
