Welcome to October’s edition of The Bridge. Despite hints of summer’s warmth still being with us as the Bridge goes to the printers, this month’s magazine is full of news and events of the new season. Linda Iles celebrates the spectacular colours in the forest at this time of year and enjoys the last of the summer’s berries. Turn to the back page for a recipe that turns nature’s bounty into a delicious drink, even if you do have to wait a year for it to be at its best. Once again, Bewdley Museum has a full programme of seasonal activities during the school holidays at the end of the month. Turn to page 11 for details and to page 15 to see what’s on offer for children and families from the Ruskin in Wyre project in the forest. Earlier in the summer, the Community Workshop and Café opened its doors in the old Scout Hut in Park Alley, just up the footpath off High Street. Turn to page 25 to find out the latest news and see inside the front cover to admire some handiwork produced in the workshop, October brings us Bewdley Festival with a wide range of events and great entertainment. See the centre colour pages for what is on offer and read what Alastair Elliott is looking forward to on page 43. The beginning of autumn means that thoughts are turning toward Christmas. Cards for Good Causes opens its pop up shop in St. George’s Hall this month - details on page 37 - while on page 27 Elaine Barbour explains why she has been a Traidcraft Trader for 30 years and looks forward to Bewdley’s Traidcraft Fair early in November with its Christmas gifts and goodies. The redeveloped St. George’s Hall opened five years ago and now the team behind the hall is keen to hear your views about this facility and what more it could offer. Turn to page 29 to find out how to make your views heard. And read the story on page 13 of Thomas Marson who helped the people of Bewdley and Wribbenhall come together 150 years ago. Gill

Thomas Marson’s silver mug In 1834 - due to the exertions of one Thomas Marson of 64 Load Street Bewdley - the toll to cross Bewdley bridge, which had blighted the lives of many for years, was abolished. As a mark of their gratitude, his friends and fellow townsmen, presented him with a silver pint mug, beautifully embossed with a representation of the Bridge and an inscription commemorating the occasion. This historically significant mug has been offered to the Town by a leading antique dealer. The mug is offered with two other less significant items of Thomas Marson memorabilia – but the price is rather prohibitive at £2850 + VAT. Obviously these items, together with the fascinating story of Thomas Marson, are really only of great historical value to Bewdley and it would be lovely if we could bring the mug “home”. The Friends of Bewdley Museum are wondering if anyone out there would be willing to make a contribution towards the purchase? We have already received some kind offers, but are still nowhere near the asking price. If you might consider contributing, please drop an email to: pauline.lowe@uwclub.net

Nos Novem concert - Saturday 6th October 2.30pm
Talented singing group Nos Novem have been booked for Bewdley Methodist Church’s next ‘Music in the Chapel’ concert, performing a ‘sacred and secular’ programme, featuring music ranging from 16th Century motets through Mozart and Bach to hits from West End musicals and songs made famous by the likes of Abba and the Beatles. All funds raised will go to help the church's ongoing commitment to its mission and outreach activities and are intended to increase the church's involvement with the local community. We are grateful for the sponsorship of St John’s Lodge 6414 for this concert. Tickets cost £8.00, including light refreshments, and are available from: Neil Sollom (Tel 07780 650491 or email: neilsollom@btinternet.com) or Mike Dernie (Tel 01299 400284, or email: mikedernie@aol.com).

The ‘Living Churchyard’ at St Leonard’s The wildflower meadow has now been mowed, and we were delighted to be able to send a trailer load of hay for feed to the cattle at the Wyre Community Land Trust. Thank you to everyone for their support and understanding as we navigated our way through the first year of this project. Next year, we should see even greater diversity of wildflower and pollinator species. We will continue to respond to individual requests for paths and access as promptly as possible. Thanks are due to our volunteer working parties, to the Community Payback team for their impressive commitment to the tasks we set them to support our project, and to Co-op Funeral Care for the volunteer team who made a huge improvement to one of the herbaceous beds. Finally, thanks go to Ed Cameron, of Tree and Garden Services, whose hard work, sensitivity, dedication and attention to detail, have kept this big and difficult churchyard beautiful through spring, summer and autumn. Thank you – there has been much praise, and Ed is not always there to hear it! Caroline Hall carom.hall@gmail.com

Our house July’s Bridge had a cover photo of our house with its pretend oar above the window and now we have noticed people coming past and saying, "Oh, look! There's that house". I'm glad we put it up, and also glad that so many people notice that and the flowers in our tiny front garden. We have lots of chats to passers-by who want to know about us and our old cottage; not just locals, but visitors from all over the British Isles come to enjoy our town. We have also had people from Europe and even as far afield as New Zealand. Sometimes it's good to be living in a popular town! Sharon and John Hill 25

The Community Workshop and Café We had a busy and successful Open Weekend 4th and 5th August, meeting with local residents and neighbours, local artists and the community keen to see what we are up to ! Our Holiday Workshops produced some interesting and beautiful work including a pair of silver drop earrings, stained glass, copper work, wooden spoons and lino cut prints. See this month’s inside front cover for pictures of the fantastic copper bowl made by a young man, and a large copper bowl made into an excellent outdoor water feature by a teacher on her holidays. We were also invited by Wyre Forest District Council to run workshop stalls at the Kidderminster Arts Festival, which was fun for us, dry felting poppy flowers and lino printing. Community Workshop and Café cards proving to be popular with children and adults alike. We have now introduced our term time timetable, morning sessions 10.00 am till 12.30, and afternoon sessions 1.30 till 4.00 pm. Please see our website – www.thecwcafe.com for details. You can of course come and learn new skills in your chosen art and craft, but you are also very welcome to come and make or finish your own projects in our Open Workshops, running on Thursday mornings and Friday afternoons. Our Men's shed workshops are also now open now, these will be running on Thursday mornings and Friday afternoons but our Men's shed community are welcome anytime. Pop in and see us to discuss what works best for you. The Café has attracted visitors, tourists and walkers, with or without their dogs. We serve freshly ground coffee, tea, from Builders to Earl Grey and a variety of cakes. We are hoping to increase our menu in the coming weeks, but the café is a community space so come and read a book, shelter from the rain, play a game or just chat to those who are there. Finally FREE HALLOWEEN PUMPKIN CARVING WORKSHOP Saturday 26th October, bring your own pumpkin. The Café will be serving pumpkin pie and soup. Hoping to see you soon, bring your ideas! Traidcraft Fair Remember, remember the 3rd of November! Yes, it’s that time of year again when we hold the big Traidcraft Fair in St Anne’s Church – the one time in the year when all the stock is on display and the best time to browse for all those Christmas presents and treats. This year we’re celebrating the 30th Christmas Fair and over those years we’ve made a huge impact on the lives of the producer partners who Traidcraft works with in some of the poorest parts of the world. As team Traidcraft at headquarters in Gateshead have recently reminded me “Fair to people and the planet; we live and breathe fair trade, organic farming, recycling, re-purposing and using sustainably-sourced natural materials every day. We were the first in the UK to do this and this is why we’re the original fair trade pioneers. We celebrate a world of authentic flavours, creativity and culture; helping to save traditional crafting skills and ancient growing practices from extinction. We prize perfect imperfections, fingerprints and local expertise – all the little details that make our senses sing and out favourite treasures original. We should all know where the things we buy come from. This is why we share stories about our history, trade transparently and do all we can to raise awareness of our amazing artisans and growers” I’m proud to be part of the Traidcraft family and to have been selling our products here in Bewdley and the surrounding area for 30 years. Let’s make this year’s Christmas Fair on 3rd November the best yet. We’re open from 10am-4pm and as usual will have fair trade refreshments available, along with light lunches. Do please come and support our Traidcraft producers by buying their wonderful products. Elaine Barbour

St George’s Hall wants to hear from you! Everyone knows St George's Hall, don’t they? Or perhaps there are some who don’t, or who don’t know what it has to offer. In case you don’t, St George’s Hall is a successful and well-equipped community and arts hub in the centre of Bewdley. It is run by a charity and hosts public and private events each week, including Cinema every Thursday and regular live music in the “Music in the Hall” programme. There is also a Community Café, staffed by volunteers. All the income helps to meet running costs and to improve facilities. Rooms at the Hall are all available for hire on an hourly basis at competitive rates. It is now five years since the re-developed Hall opened. We want it to continue to meet the needs of Bewdley residents, so we need to know what you, the community, think, and what you want from the Hall. We have started contacting both existing users, and organisations that don’t currently use the Hall, to find out what you think. But you don’t need to wait to be asked – we would like to hear from as many people as possible about: • What you like about the Hall, and what you think we could do better • What you would like us to offer that we don’t • Activities that you would like to attend but which aren’t currently available • Why you don’t run events at the Hall but do hold them elsewhere – what could we do to make our offer more attractive? For those who don’t know us you can discover full details of what we are and what we do on www.thehall-bewdley.org.uk. We are really keen to receive your comments and feedback in whatever form suits you. • You can email them to feedback.thehall.bewdley@gmail.com • You can leave comments on our Facebook page - St George's Hall Bewdley • You can call in to speak to one of our staff • Or you fill in one of our feedback forms available in the cafe. We need your views. Let’s make sure we make the best use of this wonderful facility!

Holiday memories
Avro Lancastrian
Like many children born in the colonies I came to boarding school in England. I left Ceylon (Sri Lanka) aged 12 in 1947 to go to school in Malvern. Most of my holidays were spent with relations but once a year I returned to Ceylon for the summer.
The journey took three days flying out of a very primitive and noisy Heathrow Airport which consisted of Nissen huts. In those days the airline was BOAC. We were a party of assorted aged students being cared for by young airhostesses. At first we flew in modified Lancaster bombers know as Lancastrians. They were not pressurised so we had to wear earplugs. There were about 22 passengers, a pilot, an engineer and two hostesses. Because the planes were not pressurised we could not fly above 10,000 feet so any storm clouds we came across were flown straight though – quite exciting for us boys but frightening for the younger ones. The planes could not fly far so in order to reach our first stop of Cairo we had to re-fuel at Malta. At Cairo the same crew were responsible for us as we all stayed overnight at Shepherd’s hotel. BOAC tried to put all the school children and older students together which was quite entertaining but some of the older stewardesses hated it! All the captains seemed to be ex-bomber pilots with big moustaches and some entered into the fun of it all. The next day we flew from Cairo to Bahrain to re-fuel before flying on to our second overnight stop in Karachi. There was no air con in the airport and getting off the plane often at night the wicker seats were hot enough to burn the back of your legs, as we were in shorts. Whilst flying from Bahrain to Karachi over the desert we were out of range, so no radio communication. Any delays caused huge anxiety for our parents. On one occasion one of the engines sprung a leak of cooling fluid. Sitting next to the engines, I could see quite big flames coming out of the exhaust pipe. We flew back to Bahrain for a spare engine and got out into the baking hot sun with again no air con in the airport. The rest of the trip was uneventful and we landed at Karachi where the whole crew, who we knew quite well by then, joined us in the hotel. That crew then flew back to London and we picked up a new crew who flew us to Colombo via Bombay. Landing in Bombay in a Lancastrian was very exciting because we managed to talk the pilot into going the shorter route, between the mountains, and this involved a very steep turn side-slipping into the airport. As you can imagine our parents were very pleased to see us on arrival at Colombo as we were so late! On one flight between Bombay and Colombo we had to fly straight through the incoming Monsoon clouds with lightening playing all round the plane for about an hour. There was a huge drop of hundreds of feet as we hit the storm, the engines raced and then groaned as they met the upsurge. There were some memorable starts to my summer holidays! Barry Jones

Ancient ways to generate electricity and why some technologies become obsolete. Our volunteer repairers at Transition Bewdley Repair Café are very dedicated and skilled. They will have a look at any broken item that people bring in and several of them love to have a go at old appliances which use outdated technologies. These range from ancient Bakelite heaters to VHS recorders. However, some faults are very hard if not impossible to fix. One of our Repairers, Phil Harris, explains why this is and also comments on how rapidly technology can become obsolete. “In practical terms, there is little that we can do in the Repair Cafe environment with VHS video recorders. None of them have digital tuners, so they can no longer receive or record off-air TV signals. Many relied on rubber drive belts which by now will have turned to goo and perished. Effectively they were only financially viable under a rental agreement, as the cost of repair was astronomical. DIY repair is usually impossible. There are a few (a very few) specialist enthusiasts within the vintage radio and TV movement who still collect and restore video recorders. Some types are sought-after, whereas later badge-engineered mass produced models of far-east origin are virtually worthless.” Once we advanced beyond the essentially mechanical technology of the gramophone, the tape recorder and the film projector, repair ceased to become an option! Future archaeologists visiting Earth will surely conclude that humanity died out in around 1980, as after that time we ceased to preserve any artistic endeavours or knowledge in any robust format that will survive the passage of time and the failure of the electricity supply. Some printed books may survive, as will 35mm film and vinyl records, but even CDs and DVDs will have degraded and be unreadable, and anything in digital storage will have long since evaporated as soon as the power went off!” This should not deter our customers from bringing such devices along for our repairers to examine. Sometimes the fault is easily identified and simple to fix. If nothing else, they can reassure the customer that the appliance has indeed reached the end of its useful life or is worth taking to a specialist repairer. Indeed we sometimes get asked to fix quite old technology such as this Voss Generator made by Pippa Gunn's grandfather. It needed some adjustment of the drive belt and then it worked fine. A bit like a Van Der Graaf generator - it generates a high voltage to then spark between 2 spheres. The next Repair Café will be on Saturday 20th October from 10.00 – 2.00 in St. George’s Hall, Load Street. Bring along tools for sharpening and any appliances in need of repair, whether of recent vintage or from a bygone age! John Rhymer 41

Behind the Baton Bewdley has enjoyed another very musical summer with a brilliant HopFest as well as the Music Festival in Riverside North and numerous other great events. In October, it's Bewdley Festival time again and the line up for 2018 is yet another step forward for the Festival. Opening the Festival on Friday night is Roland Gift, formerly of the Fine Young Cannibals. If, like me, you were a teenager in the 1980's, you will surely have boogied to the great hits of "She Drives Me Crazy" and "Good Thing". On top of that, support will be in the form of the amazing Liz Berry and Mish Maybe, so it will be an opening night to remember. Following on from the success of last year's Classical Occasions, we are presenting another locally produced Classical concert on the Sunday featuring a programme of well-known Opera favourites. This will include well known arias and choruses from operas across the centuries from Purcell to Puccini and of course, some Mozart and Verdi. Later in the week, we are very lucky that the amazing Clare Teal will be back along with the brilliant pianist Jason Rebello. For Jazz lovers, this will be a memorable evening and a rare opportunity to hear Clare in such an intimate setting. Completing the musical line up will be the former lead singer of Fairground Attraction and now a very successful solo artist: Eddi Reader. Another huge coup for the Festival and again, a rare chance to enjoy a stadiumcapable artist in a very close up setting. I know that the Festival committee are determined to continue to bring genuinely high class acts to Bewdley and I hope you'll agree that this year's line-up is proof of that. Finally, can I make a small personal plug for a concert taking place in Bewdley Methodist Church on Saturday October 6th at 2.30pm. You may have seen the poster on High Street. It's a long overdue reunion of my small singing group: Nos Novem and will be a programme of both sacred and secular music from the 16th Century sublimity of William Byrd through to the more upbeat sounds of Motown and Manhattan Transfer. Do have a great musical October and I hope you're able to enjoy one of the many great musical events taking place in the town this month. Alastair Elliott 49

Hola Bewdley! Fancy practising your Español? Spanish Speaking Bewdley is for those in the Wyre Forest area who speak Spanish, or are learning to. The group was set up in April this year as a means of getting people together to share their love of the Spanish language and culture, to share ideas about language learning and to practise their Spanish with new friends. We meet for regular Spanish conversation sessions in and around Bewdley in informal and social settings. You don’t need to be fluent (although if you are, you’re very welcome!) you just need to be enthusiastic about speaking Spanish. Conversation Evenings: Every last Wednesday of the month we hold a Spanish Conversation Night at Piccolo’s café in Bewdley from 7.00pm. It’s very much a social occasion - it's not a class or lesson and no teaching happens but if you fancy practising what you know, please come along and join us for a cerveza, café y tapas o dos! These nights have proven really successful and attract a mixture of levels including several native speakers from Argentina, Malaga and las Islas Canarias. It’s surprising how Spanish the area is! Café y Conversacion in the Afternoon: Every second Friday of the month we gather in the quiet upstairs of Clementine’s café from 2.00pm, where we meet around pots of tea to chat in Spanish. For each of these sessions we have a fixed theme for people to prepare or practise in advance – and again, all levels are welcome. If you’re not quite sure of your level, come along with whatever you have or just come and have a listen. We currently don’t charge for any of our sessions but we do expect that you help out our lovely hosts in Bewdley by indulging in some of their delicious food and/or drink – you could always try ordering in Spanish! We’d love to see you at one of our sessions and if you have any ideas or events that we should know about please get in touch! We have plans and aspirations for future themed events, film nights, tapas evenings... so look out for our adverts or join our mailing list. You can follow us on Facebook where we post details of our events www.facebook.com/groups/SpanishSpeakingBewdley or you can email me and I’ll add you to our mailing list: bewdleyspanish@gmail.com. Hasta pronto amigos! Kate @ Bewdley Speaking Spanish

Bewdley Town Council News October 2018 The Council’s meeting on 3rd September gave a lot of information to those attending. We welcome members of the public attending meetings so please do come at 7pm on the 1st Monday of the month. We welcomed Rod Stanczyszyn to the council following his election as a Town Councillor. In the absence of our Town Clerk we also welcomed Gill Lungley who is covering as Temporary Office Manager. Gill has a wealth of clerking experience and councillors feel they are in good hands. We heard from residents concerned about the progress of repairs to Telford’s Bridge and the number of smokers and drinkers blocking pavements in front of several pubs. We will be writing to those who can take action on these issues at District and County level. Councillors debated the potential loss of the No. 2 bus service; a petition has been signed by many residents and sent to the MD of Diamond. It was resolved that the council would write deploring any reduction in service. It had been thought a good idea in response to residents’ concerns regarding licensing issues to add licensing to the remit of our Planning Committee, however this has resulted in some residents considering the Town Council to have a remit to decide licensing issues. To avoid any further confusion the Council decided to revert to the original name of Planning Committee, where WFDC consult us to hear the local point of view on planning applications before they make the decision to permit or refuse. In future if residents have concerns about licencing issues the response will be from the full council rather than one of its committees. Recent civic events where the mayor has represented the town include the naming of several roads on the Silverwoods estate in Kidderminster where one road, Lawrence Grove, is named after Bewdley-born soldier, Sergeant Brian Turner Tom Lawrence, who won the VC. HRH The Duke of Gloucester is due to visit Bewdley on 27th September to unveil the statue of Stanley Baldwin in Load Street. The town has undertaken to look after the statue in perpetuity. Town Council Meetings Town Council meetings are held at The Guildhall at 7.00pm on the first Monday of each month unless stated otherwise. The next meetings are: 1st October and 5th November. Meeting Agendas and Minutes are posted on town notice boards and are available on the Town Council’s website www.bewdleytowncouncil.org. The website also contains information about the wider work of the council, including policies and applications for grants and memorial benches and plaques. 47

Canada's Lynne Hanson needs no introduction to Music in the Hall audiences as over the past three years she has become one of our favourite performers with her own brand of Canadian Roots and Blues. October in the Forest Just when I thought I had seen the last of the decent blackberries I came across a whole row of ‘late developers’ growing fat and juicy down by the stream. Such staggered ripening is beneficial to all blackberry lovers, including fox, hedgehog and blackbird, and it could be an advantage to the bramble plant (if it is a genetic trait) as the berries are meant to be eaten and the seeds distributed rather than falling on the ground below. All through the summer there has been a succession of fruit ripening, from the strawberry onwards. Last month was the turn of the elderberries and rowan berries but they have been set upon by hungry birds and the trees have lost their colourful decorations. Some of our less common forest trees have also fruited well: the alder buckthorn, selected by brimstone butterflies as a caterpillar food plant, has borne its small, black berries and the wild service tree will keep its bunches of brown fruits until after the first frosts. For the moment the forest is still full of colour: the gold of the oak, the buttery yellow of birch, red of wild cherry and the orange of wild service. Looking just for colours, you will probably find the brightest reds on the dying leaves of sorrel, dock and bramble. I love that stage of the autumn when these colours are still evenly mixed with green. Sloes, the fruit of the blackthorn, are now getting ready to be eaten or picked, benefitting from a frost to soften them. I suppose wild animals do eat them, despite their memorable astringency (once bitten, never forgotten). I know of only one use for them: sloe gin. Here is the recipe to make 1 litre of gin: 450g sloes (frosted or pricked with a pin), 450g sugar, 600ml gin Put the sloes in a large jar or demijohn with a screw top, add the sugar and then the gin. Invert and give it a good shake to mix, and do the same every day for a week. After that, shake once a week for 10 weeks. Sieve and bottle. Keep in a dark place for at least a year to mellow. This makes a rather syrupy liqueur. I fancy making a drier version this year by halving the sugar then diluting this with tonic. Cheers! Linda Iles
