Commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the end of World War 1 On November 3rd there will be a showing of an Imperial War Museum film in St. George’s Hall. The proceeds will be split between The British Legion and Help for Heroes. Details on page 13. On November 11th (Armistice Day), there will be the normal parade outside the War Memorial, Playing of the Last Post, 2 minutes' Silence, followed by the service in St. Anne’s. At around sunset (4.30pm), after the last post has been blown and a few words said, images of the names of the Bewdley fallen will be projected on to the Guild Hall. I lost my purse last month. Restrain your grief; it contained £5.43 and a loyalty coffee card for St George's Hall. It had also seen quite a lot of service down the bottom of various bags and was nearing the end of its life. I reckon it fell out on the train so it's probably been appropriated by someone in Darlington or Penzance by now. My weeks without my purse passed uneventfully, and as I paid for something with a quick dab of my debit card I pondered on the use of hard cash these days. However, I have had absolutely no trouble doing without it. Going back not that many years this most certainly wouldn't have been the case. From buying food to paying for petrol; from paying a tradesman to catching the bus it was all real-life coins and banknotes. My holiday job wage was paid to me via a little brown envelope. A purse was always the first thing you checked as you went out of the door. It was quite a weight, too; I expect men's trouser-pockets were made of sterner stuff in those days because the coinage was bigger and heavier in those far-off times. Probably that's why handbags were de rigeur for all females. Then - such excitement! I got a real job and bank account, was paid by cheque and had to go to the bank every so often to get cash. Move on a few years and plastic and holes-in-the-wall made their appearance. Heady times; you could even pay for things in shops with your Access card via a quite large machine, sign a little piece of paper and get a paper receipt. And so to the internet. To contactless payment. To bank transfers. To forecasts of the death of cash. My best guess is that the next step will either be an implant we will all have at birth that enables you to think about paying and a terminal will receive the message. Or it will all fall to pieces and we'll have to buy bus tickets with two fresh cabbages and a home-made blancmange. Happy shopping, everyone. Now, in case you thought I'd forgotten last time's promise, here is this month's scientific fact. In1650, the average height of a man was 5ft 5in. Now it is 5ft 9in. Within the last 100 years, the average heights of Englishmen have risen more than at any time in recorded history.’ Margaret

Wribbenhall Poppy Display: throughout November Come to see nearly 3000 poppies, made by All Saints’ Church Knit and Natter group, displayed around the War Memorial in All Saints’ Churchyard, Kidderminster Road, Wribbenhall.
Lest We Forget: Saturday 10th November 10.00am-4.30pm On the eve of Remembrance Sunday come to Bewdley Methodist Church in High Street to see displays of knitted and crafted poppies and memorabilia. Bewdley Concert Band Concert: Sunday 11th November 7.45pm We hope as many people as possible will join us at a commemorative concert at St. Anne’s Church on the evening of Remembrance Sunday. The Band will be playing music and songs from the era along with traditional Proms music. We will be joined by Jonathan Darby and Claire Worboys and other local performers. The concert begins after the National lighting of Beacons including the Beacon at Crundells Hill which can be viewed from Dog Lane Car Park at 7.00 p.m. A roll call will be read, remembering the men and women of Bewdley who gave their lives for our country during the conflict. This is a free event with a collection for British Legion Poppy Appeal. The Thankful Village: Saturday 10th November 7.30pm Yorkshire-based Badapple Theatre Company bring their tour of Great War play The Thankful Village to St George's Hall. This poignant play follows the lives of three women from the same rural household- above and below stairs- through the long years of The Great War. They are left behind to cope as their men-folk march off to Flanders and each one faces up to the challenges in her own way. They cannot know that their village will end the war as one of a very few communities for which fate has reserved a special place in history. Community News September and October have been a busy time for the Education team, with schools coming for our Blitz Evacuation and Look Out It’s a Black Out activities. A very big thank you to the volunteers manning the Air Raid shelter and putting on Pipe and Rope demos for us in all weathers. The installation of the WW1 poppy in the walled Garden will take place on the 5th of November. Thank you to all of you for the contributions of crocheted and knitted poppies, especially the Knit & Natter group from All Saints’ Church Wribbenhall. A collection of trench art is on display in the Brass Foundry until the end of November. These items were made from brass debris left over from the First World War. Love Crochet starts again on the 14th November in the Guild hall 6.30 -8.00pm. There are only a few places left. The cost is £40.00 for 4 weeks. Love Crochet / Ellies little Gems have a drop in workshop and sale of Crochet Christmas presents on 24th and 25th November 10.30 -2.30 in the Education Room. All Saints’ Church, Wribbenhall Following a recent visit from the Architect and advisers, it was felt there was a risk of potential small plaster falls in the Nave of All Saints' Church. The PCC therefore spoke with possible contractors and held an emergency meeting. The estimated cost of putting safety netting up (like that currently at the back of the Church) is approximately £20,000. This is money we simply do not have. Therefore the Nave area will remain closed until the end of the year whilst further investigations regarding funding are carried out. The church will be out of use for a short period while the necessary barriers are put in place. Look out for notices during November for the latest information. Sunday services have been relocated. The 10.30 United Benefice service on the first Sunday of the month takes place at St. Anne’s or St. Leonard’s. Services on other Sundays in the month take place at Wribbenhall Parish Room. Monday Group and Knit & Natter will continue in Wribbenhall Social Club . It is with deep regret that the Bewdley Concert Band performance, High School Rush Hour Concert, Christmas Tree Festival and school Carol Concert cannot be held in the building this year. November’s Book Sale is cancelled. Transition Bewdley Repair Café We have many wonderful volunteers at the Transition Bewdley Repair Café and they have all had interesting careers and lead busy lives. David Webb is no exception. A long term Bewdley resident and business man David now lives in Great Witley but returns to Bewdley regularly to help repair items at the monthly Repair Café. David flies radio controlled planes and builds and repairs them in a home workshop. He is Secretary of the Wyre Forest Flyers Club and attends a local art group. We are lucky that this busy man puts his skills to use to help customers at the Repair Café. You can meet David and his fellow volunteers on the third Saturday of each month from 10.0 a.m. – 2.00 p.m. in St. George’s Hall. Come along to chat to these fascinating folk and enjoy refreshments from The Hall Café downstairs. And of course bring items along for repair or sharpening. We tackle repairs to a wide range of items including garments, electrical appliances, small items of furniture, clocks, jewellery, clocks etc. Repairers also love to give people confidence to carry out their own repairs. The November Repair Café is on 17th November. Time to get those Christmas lights down from the loft and bring them along to be checked. John Rhymer

St George's Hall defibrillator St. George’s Hall in Bewdley has acquired a lifesaving defibrillator due to the generosity of a local lady. When Christine Holloway heard that the Management of St. George’s Hall were aiming to raise funds to purchase the device she asked guests invited to her birthday party to give a donation instead of buying her a gift. Chris raised over £400 towards the cost. The shortfall was made up from income from St. George’s Hall together with a generous donation from Bewdley Festival Ltd. The Manager of SGH Jane Barnett, said, ‘St. George’s Hall is a real community hub with hundreds of people coming through the doors every week. A Pilgrimage I recently had the pleasure of walking from Melrose to Holy Island, (Lindisfarne) over six days with a group of twelve “pilgrims” following St Cuthbert’s Way. For aficionados of long distance paths, this is classed as an easy introduction – a mere 62 miles of reasonably gentle walking. Those with fancy apps on their phones found we in fact walked 72 miles, due to detours – no; not getting lost – and exploring Holy Island on our arrival. There were some hills, so tired limbs and blisters for some at the end of each day. So why join such a walk? For me, the lure of the scenery of the Scottish Borders and Northumbria, and knowing that all accommodation and food needs were taken care of and bags would be transported was important. I met up with old friends and made new ones – deep conversations were had as we walked along as well as moments of fun and laughter and the weather was fairly kind – some rain but not much; sunshine; pleasant temperatures and gentle breezes. Mind you, cowering behind a wall on Wideopen Hill trying to eat lunch in a sudden downpour wasn’t ideal. We held short worship services at the start and end of each day, sometimes in churches but often outside. Maxton Kirk, a 1000 year old simple church on the site of a chapel where Cuthbert worshipped, with its clear windows and views onto fields of ripe wheat, was special, as was standing in the ruins of Cessford Castle on a gloriously sunny morning with a farmer bringing in the harvest in the adjoining fields and stunning views of the Cheviots ahead. Walking along Dere Street, the old Roman road, was one place where we were fairly sure Cuthbert would have walked exactly the same path back in the 7th century. The final walk onto Holy Island, in true pilgrim style, across the mile and a half of wet sand as the tide retreated, in bare feet with the seals “singing” was a wonderful way to end our pilgrimage. I came home very tired, but with a store of memories of special moments, thought provoking conversations, good food and fellowship, and a deeper appreciation of the beauties of our world. Kidderminster and District Soroptimists October has been a fairly busy month: Our Business meeting welcomed three new members, we enjoyed an entertaining evening ‘Beside the Seaside’ presented by the Fold Theatre (with profits helping to support West Mercia Women’s Aid) and a number of members attended our Federation’s Annual Conference in Liverpool. Our next Business meeting will take place as usual 7.30 pm on the first Thursday of the month, 1st November, at Baxter Church Rooms, Bullring, Kidderminster. We shall be supporting the Heritage Group’s “Armistice Celebrations – Tea Party” held on Tuesday, 6th November, at Kidderminster Town Hall. Our Supper/Speaker meeting at La Brasserie, Kidderminster (always on the third Thursday of the month starting at 7.00 pm) will be on 15th November and we look forward to hearing Sandra Hill talk about ‘Forest School’. Bewdley Town Council News November 2018 Since being called in to help the Town Council in the short term, albeit part-time whilst Nick Farress the Town Clerk was on leave, I’ve barely had time to catch my breath as there are numerous matters to attend to. Apologies to anyone who has contacted the Town Council over the last few months and has received either no response or a delay. The office staff now have a rather long To-Do list to get through, which seems to grow longer every day, so please bear with us. The Town Council is currently having to concentrate on how to make effective progress over the next few months. Three major events that the Town Council is expected to support are looming, the dates for which are 11/11/2018 Remembrance Day, 01/12/2018 Christmas Lights and Market, and 03 to 05/01/2019 Community Pantomime. Plans are in hand for Remembrance Day, when there will be the usual road closure in the morning and because this is the centenary of Armistice Day the Town Council is arranging an outdoor projection onto the front of the Guildhall building later in the day. Details of the day will be available from the Town Council’s website in due course. For both Remembrance Day and the Christmas Market and Christmas lights switch-on, please contact the Town Council office if you usually take part even if you have already received confirmation. Following the unveiling of the Stanley Baldwin statue on 27th September, the Mayor received the following in a letter from Lt Col Patrick Holcroft LVO OBE, Lord-Lieutenant of Worcestershire: I am writing to thank you for all the time and effort that you put into hosting a most successful royal visit yesterday. I know that HRH The Duke of Gloucester enjoyed the morning enormously, particularly the gentle amble around the town itself in the morning sunshine, with the opportunity to meet so many people. It was not an easy visit to organise, but the programme flowed well and I hope that both the Civic Society and the Town Council were happy with the result. The crowds who gathered to watch the unveiling of the statue were most enthusiastic and I am sure it will be an occasion that the Town will remember for a long time. Stanley Baldwin seemed very much at ease looking out towards the River Severn. Please pass on my warmest thanks to those involved in making the visit such a happy and successful occasion. November in the Forest A few days ago I made a very exciting discovery in the forest. There I was, walking along the track, mind elsewhere, when I saw something interesting by my feet. It was the shape of a small leaf and looked like…..flint. The flat side was uppermost and it came out easily enough. Could it be an artefact? I’m used to this scenario: it looks like an arrowhead (substitute axehead, piece of pottery, fossil, rare insect etc.) but it always turns out to be something mundane and of interest to no-one else. I sent a photo to County Archaeologist, Adam Mindykowski, when I got home, and he soon replied to say that it was almost certainly an arrowhead. Here in my hand was something made by someone a few thousand years ago (Adam and his colleagues may be able to narrow it down) and used in the Wyre Forest.There is no flint anywhere near us, so it must have been traded. That wasn’t all that I found on the same walk. Not far along the same track there was a Slow-worm, stationary, right out in the middle. I expect it had felt the vibrations of my approaching footsteps and was playing dead. It was about 35 centimetres long and a particularly dark bronze. I decided to give it some help to reach the track edge and it set off again, tongue flickering. I also came across two dung beetles (also called Dor beetles) ambling along the path with their slow, clockwork-like movement. I’m talking about a warm day which will be nearly a month ago when you read this. This month the temperature will have dropped and I won’t be able to see either of these: the slow worm will have found somewhere to hibernate and the beetles will have died, leaving their eggs in an underground nest provisioned with dung or decaying leaves for the larvae which will hatch next spring. The dead adults are often seen along paths, frozen mid-stride, no longer able to object to an examination of their strikingly iridescent purple undersides. Now large numbers of ladybirds are trying to get into our house and many more creatures are going into hibernation now. The one which most readily springs to mind is the hedgehog, so familiar but so beleaguered now. Please do remember to check your bonfire piles on firework night for sleeping hogs or, better still, only build your fire just before you light it. Personally I always start a bonfire on clear ground and add material to it, so there’s no danger of cooking a spiny friend. Linda Iles
