January has arrived, and so another year has just whisked off around the corner and we can all admire the spanking new 2019. Actually, I've decided this year not to care that it's a new year. Just a date on the calendar. Just a month when I become another year older. So what? Want to make something of it? Knock yourself out. (Memo to those not keen on Yoofspeak: that's not a literal instruction.) This short piece will ignore the calendar and instead reflect upon the magnificence of our collective human memory, a topic reflecting my recent foray into that wonderful and enriching experience of saying, "What do you remember about....?" then sitting back to listen. This time it was "... about Christmas?" Well, I could have spent weeks listening to the often amusing, sometimes touching, always fascinating tales about what people take as quite ordinary happenings over the festive season. You may have read a few that my fellow editor pinched, in last month's magazine. Inspired by this, I've vowed to pin a few more people to the spot demanding a story for future editions. It's not just those more advanced in years who have tales to tell, though they so often can enthral us. Try listening in to young people as well; at first it appears unintelligible, but you soon realise that all those strange words they use have their own attractive and often highly creative meaning. Sometimes, of course, those words are neither new nor attractive - but if we exclude the bad language we can appreciate that our mother tongue is and always has been a changing thing; we shouldn't always tut and purse our lips at their neologisms. And like all of us, they too experience Bewdley life; as for all of us, stuff happens. So from now on, I might just be that ghastly person who says to you, "That sounds interesting. Tell me more." (The first episode is on page 11.) Please excuse my intrusiveness. I really am interested! This month's scientific fact: If you fold a piece of paper that is .001 cm thick (like the very fine paper Bibles are printed on) only 45 times, it will be thick enough to reach the moon. Not that that is possible. But if you could.... Margaret

Church News l Prayer in St. Anne’s Church St. Anne’s continues to be open Tuesday to Saturday 10am to 2pm. During this time we welcome our many friends from the town and visitors to the town, with light refreshment available. The church is also open at these times for private prayer. You are always welcome to pray in church, and there is also a side chapel (towards the front on the left-hand side) that you can use if you wish. Here you can also light a candle. There is a prayer board immediately as you come into church on which you are welcome to pin prayer requests. Each week these requests are offered by the regular Saturday morning prayer group. St. Leonard’s Church is usually open in daylight hours for prayer, peace and quiet.

Delivering the Post I became a postman after I'd been doing various jobs but found that this job gave me the hours I needed, work that allowed me to be in the fresh air and of course, lots of exercise. There are down sides to the job; for instance, it gets really really busy round Christmas time; and it's pretty physically demanding. One of the things I enjoy is the time on my own - it's a chance to clear my head. A lot of posties work in pairs but I prefer to work on my own, although I enjoy the time with people at the sorting office in Crossley Park in Kidderminster. Bad weather isn't really a problem; our clothes are pretty weatherproof. My day starts just before eight in the morning when I collect my ready-sorted post from the sorting office in Kidderminster. Then I sort my own round into roads ready to deliver, collect my van and drive back to Bewdley. Each person's round is worked out by computer so that we all have about the same amount to do, though those of us with Bewdley rounds have more hills than some! I get to know people on the rounds; I know when your birthdays are, and your names, of course! And I must say people are always very friendly. When I've finished the round it's back in the van to Kidderminster. Steve Cotterill

I remember . . . - - - when there was a butcher's shop in Westbourne Street, only we called it Whispering Street. He used to keep his cattle and sheep in that space under the railway bridge, then bring them over to behind his shop where he slaughtered them and sold the meat in his shop. There was another butcher, Tom Timmis, over where the opticians is now. If you go in, you can see the hooks in the ceiling where the meat was hung. He'd bring his cattle down Welch Gate, through to the back where they were slaughtered. I remember one day one of them escaped and made a dash for it down High Street. My father, who was milkman round Bewdley for many years, was in High Street and got caught by the bullock's horn. Luckily it didn't do much damage. Rita Maylam 13

Transition Bewdley Repair Café signs Manchester Declaration The UK community repair movement came together for the first time at Fixfest UK on 6 October 2018, and wrote the following Declaration to which Transition Bewdley is one of the signatories: To UK policymakers, product manufacturers and designers, • We are repair volunteers and activists representing community groups running Repair Cafés and Restart Parties across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. • Our community repair events give a second lease of life to all kinds of products that failed prematurely: small kitchen appliances, computers, radios, furniture, lamps, clothes, bikes and much more. • Most importantly, they offer practical, fun and inspiring opportunities for everyone to collaboratively learn new skills, building community connections, well-being and belonging, while preventing unnecessary waste. • By focusing on people and the planet, we hint at the future we want – a future where repair is a thriving sector of our economy; products are easy to repair and manufacturers provide spare parts for as long as possible. • We know that it’s not enough to repair in our communities, yet the success of our activities signals that an alternative to mountains of waste exists, if we make it a priority. • We are part of a growing movement pushing for our Right to Repair worldwide, alongside independent repair businesses and citizens frustrated with the early obsolescence of most of today’s products. • We ask UK legislators and decision-makers at all levels, as well as product manufacturers and designers, to stand with us for our Right to Repair, by making repair more accessible and affordable, and ensuring that we adopt product standards making products better supported, well documented and easier to repair by design. The Fixfest event and this declaration largely concentrate on the challenges of repairing modern electrical appliances and electronic devices. However, at a recent Bewdley Repair Café, as well as many of the usual electrical repairs and tools for sharpening we also had toys, dolls, clocks, a child’s ride in car, kitchen appliances with mechanical faults, furniture, clothing, jewellery, various Christmas lights, watches, special shears for trimming horse fetlocks and many other items. Our volunteers love the challenge of trying to fix a wide range of interesting items and always do their best, often taking far longer than the allocated 15 minutes per item! We would point out to our customers that the Repair Café gets quieter after 12 but last entry is 1.30 to make sure that we have time to look at your items. The next Bewdley Repair Café is on 20th January in St. George’s Hall from 10am – 2pm and continues on the 3rd Saturday of each month. We look forward to seeing whatever items you need repairing or sharpening. Any queries please contact John Rhymer on 01299 403424

Antarctica 2018 – a Trip of a Lifetime When asked where I was going on holiday this year, the reaction of the enquirers ranged from total disbelief, through mild surprise to …. wow … how amazing! Almost 9,000 miles later, I can confirm that it was totally amazing. Ignoring the rather dreary but necessary issue of getting to the Southern tip of Argentina in order to board our expedition boat, I embarked on a fantastic journey which took me to the Falkland Islands, South Georgia, the South Shetland Islands and finally the Antarctic Peninsula. Why did I enjoy the trip so much? …. My seventh (and final!) continent ….. achieved! (This could be debated …..Is Antarctica a separate continent, or, if all of the ice melted, would it be a continuation of South America ….. discuss!) The wildlife and amazing unpredictability of sightings - far more than just Penguins and Seals! The lovely people. The Falkland Islanders with their very moving stories of “the war”, the amazing experts and staff on the boat, being welcomed to an Argentinean Polar Research Station (even though most of us were English), plus my multinational and like-minded fellow travellers. The historical explorer aspects … including “walking in the footsteps” of Ernest Shackleton. Education – exciting presentations by passionate professionals who live and breathe Antarctica. Climate change, the environment, birds, glaciers, icebergs, geology and astronomy etc. Phew! The threat of Global Warming and pollution so starkly brought home, has indeed reinforced the way I think. It was a privilege for us to clear the beautiful coves we visited of plastic and fishing industry debris. Plus, of course, the amazingly stunning scenery. The landscapes are truly out of this world. The serene peace and total calm of Cieva Cove on 11 November – surrounded by mountains, glaciers and floating sea ice in a bright blue mirror-like sea - we had 2 minutes silence which was something I shall never ever forget. The indescribably rough sea on the homeward journey (Drakes Passage …. known as the Roaring Forties with a nine metre swell) was “an experience”, but I survived! Happy New Year from Bewdley Library Apologies for the lack of news from Bewdley Library since Kay's departure! Anyway, we're back for 2019 bringing the news that many of you may already have heard, of the Public Consultation regarding the future of the Library Service in Worcestershire. The Council faces continuing financial pressures which mean that the Library Service has to make further changes in order find savings to meet these financial targets. The proposal for Bewdley Library is that it becomes a Community Managed Library. Community managed libraries in Worcestershire will provide at least a minimum library service offer to the local community over a minimum number of opening hours. This means that community organisations would provide funding and management for the library buildings. The library itself would be staffed entirely by volunteers. We anticipate that the Council will continue to provide ongoing support to community managed libraries in the form of books and online reference sources, connection to the library catalogue, public computers and printers, internet access, Wi-Fi, self-issue kiosks, volunteer induction and training, and regular library management support and monitoring There are other options that could be considered and, as part of the Public Consultation process, Worcestershire residents and community organisations are invited to feedback their thoughts about the recommendations and make their own suggestions. We would encourage you to 'Have Your Say' and help shape the future of libraries in Worcestershire and particularly your local library here in Bewdley. You can complete the survey online using the following link http://www.worcestershire.gov.uk/libraries or come into the library and pick up a hard copy. The closing date for responses to this consultation is 2nd February 2019. Do come and visit us to see all that we have on offer for all ages – it's not just books ☺

readers who went to Antarctica and New Zealand

Forget Me Not Sundays Like me and many others, you may find Sundays to be quiet and alone times. Sundays can be a time when families meet together or friends are busying themselves for the coming week. Being alone at these times can be distressing and isolating and lonely, a time to dwell on the negatives. That's why we are organising an informal get together on the first Sunday of each month. If you are bereaved or alone on a Sunday, pop in for a cuppa, cake and chat. We might just make one another a little brighter and lessen the alone times. First Sunday of the Month starting 6th January 2019 2 - 4pm Holy Family Meeting Room, High Street, Bewdley Further details from the Parish Office 01299 822633 parish@stwulstanstourport.org.uk Everyone welcome

Transition Bewdley are collecting VHS Tapes for recycling Do you, like most of us, have a pile of Video tapes that you no longer have a use for but are reluctant to throw out unless they can be recycled? Transition Bewdley are organising a collection during January of Video Cassettes, which we will take for recycling. We will be supporting The Butterfly Garden project in Cheltenham. The Butterfly garden is an educational, therapeutic and recreational scheme, based initially on gardening, but now offering so much more. It is a project for people of all ages dealing with disablement of any kind. The students help to dismantle and recycle a range of items including VHS cassettes. www.thebutterflygarden.org You can leave your tapes in the boxes located in St. Anne’s Church and St George’s Café during January. If the scheme is successful we may repeat it later in the year. John Rhymer

Homestay Accommodation A small Worcestershire charity working internationally to create lasting friendships across the world is inviting families in Bewdley to welcome international visitors to their homes. Based in Malvern, EIL UK was founded in 1936. EIL stands for ‘Experiment in International Living’ and is the UK member of a global network of EIL ofďŹ ces around the world that was awarded Peace Messenger status by the United Nations. What do we do? EIL UK welcomes international visitors, mostly students, to the UK and provides them with homestay accommodation. Our volunteer host families provide a home away from home for visitors to learn about new cultures and to share their own. What do we offer our visitors? EIL UK offers a variety of experiences for international visitors. Day or weekend homestays for international students studying at university. High school students come to the UK and stay from 1-3 terms, living with a family whilst attending their local high school or college. Cultural programmes are custom made to provide visiting groups with a theme, from media studies to drama and international relations. How could you help? If your family is warm and welcoming and interested in other countries and cultures, you might enjoy being a volunteer host family for EIL UK. EIL offers volunteer host families a contribution towards accommodation and food. Get in touch with Mary by phone on 01684 562577or email at host@eiluk.org. Alternatively, if you prefer not to host, contact us if you would like information about EIL and our work or if you would like to get involved. Visit our website at www.eiluk.org. Mary Griffiths

January in the Forest The rain seems to be trying to make up for lost time. The forest tracks, which were dry and easy to walk in the summer, are slippery clay again and the potholes are opening wider at the passage of each vehicle along our access road. Wellies and overtrousers are de rigueur. This is all part of the winter experience but all too often in recent years we have suffered the more serious problem of flooding, sometimes from the Severn coming upwards but just as often from its tributaries coming downwards. Just recently we and other local landowners have been introduced to a project called Slow the Flow. Initiated by DEFRA and the Environment Agency, it is part of a national scheme with funding from central government and in our area is being led by Wade Muggleton of Worcestershire County Council. Its aim is to delay the movement of rainwater off the countryside long enough to spread the peaks of storm water runoff. A hold up of just ten minutes can prevent the water contributing to a damaging flash flood. You may have thought the photo showed a beaver dam (now there’s an idea!), but the loosely piled logs are a man-made ‘leaky dam’ which allows steady flow in normal conditions but causes water to back up during storms. It is just one of the measures which we’ll be using; others include making pools and ponds along watercourses and improving the profile of trackways so that rain flows off to the land on each side rather than turning the track into a stream. Other landowners will be planting more trees and hedges, retaining water along the contours of the land so that it is not able to run straight downhill, and deliberately blocking field drains to create boggy areas. All this is pretty ironic, considering the extent to which advice for improving agricultural productivity in the last 100 years has urged (and the government has grant-aided) land drainage schemes and hedge removal! Loss of woodland and over-stocking of sheep in upland areas has also contributed to the risk of flooding; a risk that will increase with weather changes linked to climate change. This new aspect of countryside management will be good news for wildlife and for those who love to walk the paths of the Wyre Forest and its neighbouring landscape. It will also help to conserve part of the natural world which is often overlooked but which is absolutely vital - the soil. For more information on ‘Slow the Flow’ please contact Wade on wmuggleton@worcestershire.gov.uk. Linda Iles
