The Bridge March 2019
Transition Bewdley - VHS tape collection In just three weeks, Transition Bewdley with the support of our friends in Transition Kidderminster have collected nearly 1,500 VHS tapes for recycling. Two car loads have already been taken down to The Butterfly Garden in Cheltenham and at least one more load to go. The Butterfly Garden is an educational, recreational and therapeutic project for people dealing with issues that they find disabling. And what an inspiring place it is! More than 150 students of all ages visit each week for activities which include woodwork, cookery, drama, dance, music, art and of course gardening. Their recycling activities provide the students with interesting and rewarding activities which help our society to reduce its impact on the planet. They recycle cans, bottle tops, cardboard and horticultural plastics as well as VHS cassettes which cost too much to be commercially dismantled. Who knew that each video cassette is made of 28 components including steel springs, screws and various kinds of plastic? They cannot recycle Audio Cassettes as these are glued together and may contain chrome tape which might be hazardous. Well, this student certainly knows what is involved, as she methodically and patiently dismantles one cassette after another, filling a builder’s sack with the empty cases from just 1.5 days of her work. Within minutes of our delivery, students were already removing the cassettes from their cases and extracting the paper labels before passing the cassettes on to the next team for dismantling. Our contribution was greatly appreciated by the students and the volunteers who run the projects but is dwarfed by the delivery they received the next day of 22,500 VHS cassettes collected nationally by the Salvation Army. Those will keep the Butterfly Garden Project busy for the next year but they still want us to collect more so we will be repeating our collection in April. We could collect more often if there is anyone locally who goes to or past Cheltenham occasionally. The Butterfly Garden is less than five minutes from Junction 11 of the M5. If you can help, please contact John Rhymer on 01299 403424. John Rhymer

There's been a lot recently about the dangers of air pollution. In our town that's not quite such a hot topic here as for those living in London or Birmingham, though it's something we've all experienced. Another 21st century worry is light pollution. Unless we live in a few designated Dark Places, our night skies are no longer truly dark and many of us never have the opportunity to see the wonder of a sky full of stars. This month I want to add another Pollution - Noise Pollution. I'm not talking about noisy neighbours, though I can think of few things as awful as rowdy neighbours (mine, I hasten to add, are very very quiet and extremely thoughtful. Just in case they read this.) I'm thinking, rather, of the fact that almost anywhere you are it's never silent. I remember my dad pointing out that the M1 motorway, being built only a couple of miles from where I lived as a child, might actually be quite noisy eventually. He wasn't kidding. Sometimes when I am out walking in the back of beyond I stop to listen. Ahh! How peaceful. Oh no; a farmer is rounding up sheep on his quad bike. A helicopter goes from somewhere to somewhere else. A distant tree feller or hedge cutter starts work. A tractor comes round the bend. (Once it was a refuse lorry on a lane so narrow he had to wait while I found a gateway.) So my challenge to Bridge readers is to spend a few minutes on a listening walk. Try striding out with your ears wide open and see (hear?) how many different sounds come your way; mid-February I walked from Load Street along the river to Dowles Brook and notched up sixteen separate sounds. Beat that! Because not all sounds are bad, I'm starting up a seasonal series of noises people have heard. Winter sounds are in the centre colour section. To match my theme of Sound, here's this month's Scientific Fact about sound: The soothing sound of waves at the seaside is roughly 12 cycles per minute, which is about the same as the rate of breathing of a sleeping human. During this time we welcome our many friends from the town and visitors to the town, with light refreshments available. There are fairly-traded items from around the world for sale too. The Birdman of Bewdley Nick, the Birdman of Bewdley, has been feeding and looking after our river birds for many years with donations from regular supporters and using his own funds. The price of feed has now risen to £6 for a 20kg sack and the birds require 1 - ½ bags a day! The price is likely to go up again soon because of the poor harvest last year. Nick and the birds now need a little help. A new Facebook group has been created called “Bewdley River Birds”. Please join this page for information on our bird life and what to look out for on the river. We will be holding fundraising events throughout the summer and have also set a GoFundMe page to help Nick with this important work. Nick has driven about 1,000 miles this year, taking more than 25 birds to specialist vets out of this area and rehoming them if they were not fit enough to return to the river; all this completely at his own expense. If you would like to help Nick with this worthy project, please donate to the GoFundMe page on Bewdley River Birds Facebook page.

Bewdley Museum The museum re-opens for the 2019 season on Saturday 2nd March. There will be live music by The Hotsy Totsy Band and a childrens’ entertainer throughout the day. The first exhibitions for this season are “Beautiful, peaceful, fruitful: Ruskin in Wyre” from 2nd March – 18th April, an exhibition exploring the Victorian writer and artist, John Ruskin and his connection with the Wyre Forest. The Ruskin in Wyre project is a joint collaboration between the Guild of St George and the Wyre Community Land Trust and is supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund. Orbiting The Earth 2nd March – 6th May Celebrating 50 years of the first moon landing, another opportunity to see satellite images of the local area. On the opening day of this exhibition, visitors will have the opportunity to view rock samples collected by the Apollo missions of the late 1960s and early 1970s. An expert will be on hand to answer questions. During the winter closed period we have had another busy maintenance programme which includes the installation of new glass doors from our shop through to the Shambles. These allow plenty of natural light into the shop area and also allow visitors to see the view down to the garden gate as soon as they enter the museum. We have been re-furbishing the wildlife display area, painting in the Bewdley Story Gallery and preparing the One Grain area to be the new home for the History group to meet on a regular basis. We are hoping that access to this area will make it easier for our visitors to pop in during opening hours. Our programme of events is booked and we look forward to another year of music and theatre in our beautiful gardens. Please see details of these on the museum website. We continue to offer Dance,Yoga, Crochet and Fit Steps classes in the Guildhall for this season and these evening classes are all proving to be very popular. Our crafts people are all back and looking forward to another busy season and we have new stock in our shop ready for the spring. We have new tenants in our cafe and look forward to welcoming Sarah and her team to the Museum. She has some lovely menu ideas and is excited to make a start and looking forward to welcoming our regular customers back. Finally, I can report that Oreo and Angelina, our fish, had babies just before Christmas and they are all thriving in the herb garden pool and looking forward to a new season and some warmer weather! We look forward to seeing you all. Ali Bakr Museum Manager

WINTER SOUNDS Now that Spring is peering round the edge of winter, I thought I’d mark the season’s change by asking people round town, “What are the sounds you associate with winter?” Here are some of their answers... The laboured sound of a car trying to start on a cold morning. Tony Redstall
Car tyres crunching on a fosty road. Edna Davy
Early morning owls hooting in the darkness. Paula Mayall
Wipers struggling squeakily to clear a frosty windscreen. Margaret Edwards
The squeaky crunch your wellies make in deep snow. Kath Brame
The special sort of silence you hear in a cold, frosty night when you open a window or door. Diana Hickson
Crackling logs on a fire. Joyce Coombs
Crows cawing their way back to bare trees at sunset. Heather Fairs
The strange singing noise when you throw a pebble on to a frozen pond. Barbara Fauset
The last song in Schubert’s Winterreise possibly one of the most bleak pieces of music ever written. Alan Fairs
Lying in bed listening to the wind lashing the rain against the window. Janet Mann
New Year's Day Duck Race A crucial '0" was omitted from last month's report on the Duck Race. The amount raised was of course over £2,000. We apologise for the error.
Community News
News from Bewdley Medical Centre This is our new column; we hope it will be informative and useful. We hope to update you on medical issues in your community and provide some health tips for all. The first few columns will include more information about the strains in the NHS to help you understand some of the issues you may have accessing services. This month we look at how the NHS is struggling with increasing demand, decreasing funding and increasingly complex systems. We will look at some solutions next month! Why do we see an increase in demand for NHS services? The most important reason is that the average age of our population is increasing. As people get older they accumulate more long term illnesses, like diabetes or heart disease, which increases the need for visits to the doctors, or admissions to hospital. Other reasons for increasing demand include an increased expectation of how patients are monitored both in hospital and general practice; decreasing support services for patients with social or psychological issues; increasing levels of illnesses that are not age dependant such as mental illness. All of this leads to an increased cost of about 5-7 % per year for NHS services. Where have all the GPs gone? The government has pledged to recruit 5000 more GPs by 2020 to cope with the increasing demand for services. However, the country now has 1000 fewer GPs than when the pledge was made, so why is this? There are multiple reasons, but in essence we are seeing fewer doctors wanting to become GPs and more GPs retiring early, often under a burden of stress that limits their career length. Many practices in the country are unable to recruit GPs at all, leading to 1-2 practices a week closing permanently. What about the hospitals? Hospitals are struggling all year round, particularly A+E departments, or medical emergencies. This has led to an increased desire from doctors and patients to provide care at home. Doctors are also expected to stick to increasingly strict guidance on reducing outpatient referrals. For the last 2 years all the outpatient referrals are reviewed and measured against this guidance. Has all hope gone? Next month we will tell you about how we are trying to provide the best service we can in this difficult environment.

Butterfly Conservation
Support for local orchard owners is on offer through a new project developed by Butterfly Conservation working together with the Wyre Community Land Trust. Over the next year, a programme of free events and activities is planned to provide practical advice in looking after orchard trees and their continuing management. The orchard programme is part of the work being provided locally by the Wyre Forest Facilitation Group which provides support to landowners interested in managing their land for wildlife and the environment. The group was set up back in 2015 with support from DEFRA (Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) and now has over 60 members. The Wyre Community Land Trust (WCLT) and the Facilitation Group will be working in partnership to promote the awareness and importance of orchards as well as providing training, practical support and advice. WCLT have started to map and record information on the remaining orchards in the Wyre Forest area and are looking for volunteers to help them carry out further survey work. They also want to hear from local orchard owners that wish to be involved. Events coming up in March and April are based around Pruning Apple Trees, Planning and Planting an Orchard, Orchard Wildlife and pollinators. These events are being led by Wade Muggleton, local expert and author of ‘The Apples and Orchards of Worcestershire’, who recently featured on BBC Gardeners World. To find out further information visit www.wyreclt.org.uk/events and to book your place contact events@wyreclt.org.uk or call 01299 488083.

World Day of Prayer A women led, global, ecumenical movement FRIDAY 1ST MARCH – 2.30pm BEWDLEY BAPTIST CHURCH Come – Everything is Ready! Everything is ready and the invitation is for everyone - men, women and children of all ages to join this Day of Prayer service prepared by the Women of Slovenia. World Day of Prayer is an international, inter-church organisation which enables us to hear the thoughts of women from all parts of the world: their hopes, concerns and prayers. In this service the women of Slovenia encourage us to reflect on the barriers they have faced since the end of the Second World War when their country was a part of Yugoslavia, a Marxist socialist republic. They share the challenges they have met and the hopes they have for the future. The Day of Prayer is celebrated in over 120 countries. It begins in Samoa and prayer in native languages travels throughout the world - through Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Europe and the Americas - before finishing in American Samoa some 38 hours later. Refreshments from Slovenia will be available after the service.
Wyre Forest U3A monthly meeting for March has been changed from Monday 18th to Monday 25th March, starting at 2pm at Kidderminster Town Hall. The speaker will be Graham Short, "Micro Artist". New members are very welcome.
Bewdley/Wribbenhall Ladies’ Luncheon Club At our meeting in January we had a most informative talk on a visit to Japan. This gave us an interesting glimpse into how different people’s lifestyles are there. We would be delighted if new ladies would like to join us for our next meeting at the Mercure, on 27th March, when we will have what promises to be a most interesting talk on Women in the First World War, by Caroline Hall. We meet every month and enjoy lunch, followed by a variety of good speakers. If you would like to contact our secretary on 01299 877908, she will give you all the information about our long established luncheon club, and details of our next meeting, so that you can have a taster. We look forward to hearing from you, and you can be sure of a warm welcome. 39

Verdi's Otello - St George's Hall
I was lucky to be in Bewdley on a night that Cinema in the Hall was showing opera and joined a small but clearly appreciative audience for a recorded live performance of Otello from the Royal Opera House. It starred Jonas Kaufmann who was in exceptional voice, his naturally baritone quality lending an innate brooding to the character. Verdi’s Otello had lived a life steeped in military violence and Kaufmann brought a subtle anxiety to a soldier whose status and new marriage had been exploited by the state. Marco Vratogna shone as his foil Iago. He left the impression that he had only to flick a switch to – chameleon-like – assume a new colour to exploit Otello’s vulnerability. In their duets the leading males’ voices were so matched that it was sometimes difficult to tell them apart. A little more brightness and contrast would have helped but perhaps the similarity was intentional. As Desdemona, Maria Agresta grew in confidence after the interval and more than rose to the challenge of her long solo scene. The production was sparse but sumptuously lit, a suitably classy setting for the ROH chorus that gave out a stunning sound. The endeavour of everyone on stage was faultless. Conductor Sir Antonio Pappano and the orchestra were excellent, as always. The sound, projection and big screen at St George’s Hall more than rose to the occasion of showcasing world class opera and I hope to be in town when Cinema in the Hall shows the next one. March in the Forest This month we anticipate the birth of the first lambs on Uncllys Farm since we moved here. Our grazier has a flock of 16 Kerry, Welsh Mountain and Herdwick ewes, who have been consorting with a Kerry ram, so we hope for a good crop of lambs with a mixture of markings but all equally bouncy! On a serious note, we’ll have to try and protect them from dog worrying. The forest is very popular with dog walkers and most assume that they can let their pets off the lead here. They also assume that their pet would never chase sheep, but sad experience shows that you can’t be sure of this. There’s a connection here with our efforts to conserve woodland birds, which are increasingly disturbed by dogs. Fortunately a number of woodland plots are now surrounded by deer fencing so that trees can regenerate naturally, safe from hungry Fallow and Muntjac. Volunteers have recently planted little Rowan, Hazel, Wild Cherry, Wild Service and Hawthorn trees in these plots to create a diverse habitat which can better support a wide range of insects, birds and other wildlife. Research shows that many woodland birds including Dunnock, Nightingale, Garden Warbler and Long-Tailed Tit are adversely affected by deer browsing. We intend to do more survey work so that we can see if our efforts produce the beneficial results intended. This month also sees the opening of a new exhibition at Bewdley Museum. ‘Beautiful, peaceful and fruitful: Ruskin in Wyre’ marks the 200th birthday of the eminent Victorian, whose legacy could be said to include public libraries, museums and art galleries, the sympathetic preservation of old buildings and beautiful landscapes, the recognition of Turner, the improvement of factory working conditions…etc.! His acquaintance with our forest inspired a movement (the Guild of St. George) to set up communities where ordinary people could work the land, develop craftsmanship and pursue their own education, in short ‘make some piece of England beautiful, peaceful and fruitful’. Ruskin Land is certainly beautiful and peaceful. Its fruitfulness may be measured in many ways: the produce from its orchards and fields, the diversity of its nature, its role in spreading a love of nature, art and craftsmanship, and the health and wellbeing of those who live, visit or work there.
