The Bridge April 2019
March in the Forest It’s all happening in the forest this month. This would be true for a normal April, but this year spring started early and quite a few seasonal milestones are being turned on their heads. There were reports that Swallows and House Martins were arriving in the southwest at the end of February. I hope they found enough food – the insects they rely on may not have woken from their winter slumbers in time to breed the numbers needed. This is a danger with climate hiccups and changes, which upset the patterns that the life cycles of wild creatures exploit. The example that springs to mind is that of Great Tits, which have been studied by Oxford University in Wytham Woods since 1947. I quote from the project’s website: ‘Once the chicks hatch, parents embark on what is perhaps the most challenging few weeks of their lives – in the space of two weeks they will transform their naked and blind chicks, weighing about 1 gram each, into fully-formed birds capable of flight, each weighing more than their parents! This is only possible because the parents time their breeding so that they have chicks in the nest when there are lots of caterpillars in the woods. Although caterpillars are plentiful they are only available to the tit for a few weeks, and the timing of this caterpillar peak varies greatly between years. Timing of egg laying is therefore critical – if parents get it wrong, and lay too early or too late, they may not be able to find enough food to keep their brood alive.’ I don’t know when the Swallows and House Martins will arrive at Uncllys but Great Tits are the most numerous birds in our garden and probably in the surrounding woods. They empty our (large) sunflower feeder in a morning but I suppose need the caterpillars to give their offspring a balanced diet. If the weather is anything near normal I shall be trying to spot the toads this month as they migrate through the woods to spawn. They walk rather than hop, and on a still day you may be lucky enough to track them by the rustling of dead leaves as they make their way to their favourite pond or lake. They produce long strands of dark spawn (unlike the clumps of frogspawn) along the pond margins. When we lived at the end of Kidderminster Road, Bewdley, we often saw toads at all times of the year but they dwindled, presumably as the construction of the by-pass took its toll on the Spring Grove lakes. Now that we live in the Wyre Forest we try to make our patch as hospitable as possible to all forms of wildlife and value the visits of Bufo bufo, hoping that it will continue to help itself to our slug population. The Bridge is the community voice of Bewdley It is free and delivered by volunteers to more than 4,600 homes every month Visit us at www.bewdleybridge.org.uk
Welcome to another bumper edition of the Bridge. John Robinson has been taking photographs of local wild life in and around his Wyre Forest garden for many years. His beautiful cover photograph captures the new season perfectly and we look forward to seeing more of John’s wonderful pictures in the future. This month we are pleased to bring you news of what has been happening recently at St. Anne’s Primary School in the words of the pupils themselves. Turn to page 31 to share their enthusiasm for what they’ve been doing, including the impressive Litter Week organised by the School Council. Another organisation working to keep Bewdley clean is The Pickup Artists, founded by someone who saw a problem in her community and decided to do something about it. Turn to page 33 to read this group’s latest news and find out how you can help to make a difference. And see the colour poster facing page 26 to find out all that is on offer at the Bewdley Greener Living Fair in the Museum and St. George’s Hall. Elaine Barbour has been working to make a difference to the wider community for more than thirty years as a volunteer Fair Trader of Traidcraft goods. Read what is happening with this organisation and how you can support its work in Bewdley on page 33. The Rotary Club of Bewdley held their annual photography competition at The Bewdley School recently with record entries of a high standard that gave the judges a difficult job. Some of the winning entries are featured on our centre pages, including some reminders of the winter just passed. Good luck to the winners as they progress to the regional competition. And of course, this month brings us Easter. Look out for details of the Bewdley Passion and easter activities at the museum. Happy Easter! Gill

All Saints’ Church - a correction. We made an error in the colour pages of March’s Bridge magazine when we said that services were being held in Wribbenhall Parish Room because the church roof is unsafe. We have been asked to clear up any possible confusion. Only the occasional service is being held in the Parish Room; all the rest take place in the back section of All Saints’ church. This is because the current problem with the ceiling means that part of the church has been partitioned off. All Saints’ roof is in good order and recently passed its five-yearly architects’ inspection. All normal activities are carrying on in All Saints’ as usual and there are no plans to close the church. Forget Me Not Sundays
Bewdley Baroque Soloists Director: Alastair Elliott
Like me and many others, you may find Sundays to be quiet and alone times, a time to dwell on the negatives. That's why we hold an informal get together on the first Sunday of each month. If you are bereaved or alone on a Sunday, pop in for a cuppa, cake and chat. We might just make one another a little brighter and lessen the alone times. Next meeting is on Sunday 7th April 2.00 - 4.00pm in Holy Family Meeting Room, High Street, Bewdley. Everyone welcome Further details from the Parish Office 01299 822633

Bewdley/Wribbenhall Ladies Luncheon Club In February we had a most interesting and amusing talk by returning speaker John Butterworth, about a hotel with A famous Guest List. This was very much enjoyed by all the members. On 24th April all ladies are invited to lunch, followed by our AGM, which is always interesting, hearing more about our luncheon club and its activities. To join us at the Mercure, as a guest or new member, please ring our secretary on 01299 877908, to make further enquiries. 21

Rotary International Young Photographer The Rotary Club of Bewdley recently held their local round of this competition at The Bewdley School and Bewdley Sixth Form. This year’s competition, the tenth year it has been held, yielded a record number of entries with 117 across the two age ranges. Each competitor was required to produce three photographs from a given subject, this year’s subject being “Beauty of Nature”. Senior section winner was Oliver Wooldridge with Nathan Child runner-up and Bea Cartwright receiving the prize for Best Individual Picture. (Top of page: Oliver’s three photographs)
Intermediate section winner was Edward Powell, with Thomas Weston runner-up and Frankie Fradgley securing the Best Overall Picture prize. (Bottom of page: Edward’s three photographs) The winner’s photographs from each category will now be forwarded to the District leg of the competition and, hopefully, as in the past, one of the entries from The Bewdley School will progress to the Regional Competition. Well done to all the winners and entrants.
Community News
News from Bewdley Medical Centre Last month in this column we explained some of the pressures the NHS is under, with decreased funding, decreasing numbers of GPs and increasing demand for our services. This month we will tell you about how we are trying to meet these challenges. Workforce Changes: Over the last ten years we have seen a revolution in the type of staff working in Bewdley Medical Centre. We now employ many more staff in our nursing team, including Advanced Nurse Practitioners who can prescribe medicine and treat a large variety of medical conditions. We also now employ Pharmacists to work for us and help patients with medication queries; also alongside our Doctors we have a Community Psychiatric Nurse who helps our patients with mental health issues. Improved Planned Care: As patients get older they tend to develop more long term conditions such as diabetes or heart disease. We now have a well tested system to provide these patients with planned regular reviews. These reviews are delivered by our nursing team and they are done to improve patients’ health and also keep patients well so they don’t need to see a doctor. Last year we hit 100% of our targets for these reviews for the first time. Changes in How Patients Access Doctors: We live in a time when there are simply not enough doctors’ appointments to meet the demands put on the NHS. We are trying hard to make sure we see the patients in most need, which is why we have changed to a phone based system. We know not everyone likes this system, although overall our satisfaction rates are good. However as time goes by we regularly review how we can support patients in this way. If you would like to express an opinion on this then why not join our patient participation group, or our virtual patient group which offers online patient engagement. Next month we will look at mental health and how to protect your mind.

News from the pupils of St. Anne’s Primary School Year Four Residential Trip This half term,Year Four were very lucky - we went on a residential trip to Boreaton Park in Shropshire! There were 36 children with four of our lovely teachers. We were so excited to stay in a grand house, in dorms with our closest friends. The activities on our residential were AMAZING and included: quad biking, high ropes courses, raft building, going on the giant swing, orienteering and zip wiring. We were even kept super busy in the evenings with an exciting disco and campfire. Luckily, whilst we were there we had incredible weather; the sun was shining and they were the hottest February days on record. We had the best time ever and can't wait to go on our next residential. Written by Year Four children School Council’s Litter Week Here at St Anne’s, we feel strongly about caring for our school environment and the wider world with ‘Caring’ being one of our school values. Therefore, the School Council organised a week of ‘litter collecting’. We started the week off by introducing "Litter Week" during an assembly so that everyone knew what was involved and its importance. On Tuesday, all of the School Council members collected the lunchtime litter from their classrooms to weigh it to see how much litter each class had produced that day. The shocking results were announced the following week in assembly. Several members of the School Council had a successful litter pick around the school grounds on Thursday - the litter we picked up really improved our environment. Finally, at the end of the week, everyone was persuaded to go "waste free" with their snacks and lunches. The School Council hopes that everyone has thought about the waste that they produce and will look for ways to reduce it in the future. St Anne’s School Council World Book Day For the past eighteen years, World Book Day has been celebrated all around the world in over 100 countries. St Anne’s marked the occasion with a week of bookrelated events including a book character dressing up day and writing a whole school story which Reception started and Years Five and Six finished - with the rest of the school writing the parts in between. Other events during the week were: teachers and children sharing stories with other age groups, a travelling book company and a range of competitions such as designing a book cover, writing book reviews and even creating a new reading area in our classrooms which Mr Tipping, our Head Teacher, had the difficulty of judging! We all thoroughly enjoyed immersing ourselves in books and reading during the week and we look forward to revamping our library in the near future. Years Five and Six 31

Community News Bewdley Development Trust have funded new litter picking equipment for The Pickup Artists, a voluntary group set up to help keep the local area litter free. BDT director Robert Smith said "We are delighted to have contributed towards the work of this local community group. It demonstrates community action at its best. When we were approached to fund new litter picking equipment it immediately appealed to us as a cause well worth supporting." To celebrate the success of receiving the money for new equipment and to say thank you, The Pickup Artists took part in a litter pick around Bewdley and collected 12 bags of rubbish to be taken away by WFDC. Adults and children all came together to help make a difference to where they live. The George Hotel kindly gave all volunteers a hot drink after the event to say thank you. The Pickup Artists have purchased 5 sets of litter picking equipment to give to Bewdley residents who would like to keep the area where they live litter free. Michelle Medler, founder of The Pickup Artists said "Having this money to buy equipment for Bewdley residents will make a direct change to 5 people. They will get out into the fresh air, talk to people in the streets and feel good about knowing the difference they are making. In return, they will make the area they live more appealing for all local residents and people who pass by. We can't thank the Bewdley Development Trust enough for their kind donation." If anyone would like to have a set of equipment please contact The Pickup Artists for more details. the.pickup.artists@outlook.com or on Facebook. Together we can make a difference. Michelle Medler
Traidcraft News Some of you will be aware that there was the probability that Traidcraft would close at the end of 2018. Thankfully a rescue plan was put forward and a new, slimmed down version of Traidcraft is continuing to trade and I am continuing as a Fair Trader. So the stall in St Anne’s Church is still there. Traidcraft is determined to continue its life enhancing work with our producer partners in the developing world, and it needs us to play our part. Traidcraft is one of the groups selling Fairtrade products in the UK, but not all Fairtrade is Traidcraft. Buying Fairtrade is always good, but if you want to help Traidcraft continue its pioneering work beyond its first 40 years, seek out Traidcraft products. Traidcraft is relying on the network of Fair Traders to keep selling and to sell more, year round, so do please venture into St Anne’s and see what’s on offer. With Easter fast approaching, there is a selection of Easter cards for sale and leaflets offering a range of Easter eggs. Please give your orders to me, by phone, 01299 400617 or email: barboursbewdley@btopenworld.com. New catalogues are available and there is a good range of general greetings cards, as well as new designs of the wonderful bamboo socks. Elaine Barbour 39

Transition Bewdley Repair Café Peter Bettridge, at 88 is not quite our oldest volunteer. His career has included work for EMI as a junior design engineer developing TV studio equipment for the BBC, a short service commission in the RAF as a Signals Officer maintaining airborne communications and radar equipment and work for Philips Electrical, GEC, EMI and an American company, Zero Manufacturing in a number of technical and commercial roles. At the Repair Café Peter enjoys mending items ranging from electrical devices to jewellery and stuffed toys all brought in by owners who were reluctant to scrap them but unable to find “high street” repairers. He has developed the skills needed for these tasks over the years, some from early training, others from a lifetime of DIY and hobbies such as woodwork and toy making. Peter gets satisfaction at the Repair Café from making something work again and saving the item from the scrap bin. On the downside, it is depressing to find products that have been manufactured in a way that makes them non-repairable e.g. remote control units glued together rather than screwed so impossible to gain access to the interior. His most unusual task was a pair of boots fitted with a grid of retractable steel prongs for enabling grip on icy surfaces. The prongs had become jammed in the down position resulting in the boots becoming unwearable for normal surfaces. A combination of ingenuity and brute force restored the boots to use! Come and meet Peter and our other wonderful volunteers at St. George’s Hall on Saturday 20th April 10.00 - 2.00. For more details contact John Rhymer on 01299 403424 john.rhymer50@gmail.com

The Shelsley Walsh Water Mill The Shelsley Walsh Water Mill Society will open its doors to welcome visitors from 11am to 4pm on Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th May 2019 as part of National Mills Open Weekend - the annual festival of the UK’s milling heritage, and the chance for everyone to explore their local windmills and watermills. The weekend is coordinated by the Mills Section of the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings. Entry is free of charge and there is plenty of free parking in the paddock of the world-famous speed hill climb - now entering its 114th year of speed events - next to the mill. We are a registered charity and donations towards the upkeep of the mill will be very welcome. Tea, coffee and cakes will be available throughout the day. The Water Mill Society is run by volunteers, with widely varied backgrounds and expertise including several retired engineers, builders, educationalists, IT experts, accountants and an auctioneer. Collectively known as the ‘Dibnahs’, they have lovingly restored the mill over a ten year period to its current working condition for use as a visitor attraction and educational resource. In addition to the Mill, the Dibnahs have restored several agricultural machines, mostly powered by the water wheel via belt drive, which can be seen running in the workshops next door. The water mill at Shelsley Walsh was part of a farming community until the early 1900’s, and, although there has been a watermill on this site since 1308, the current mill shows three stages of construction spanning the last 300 years. It is the only working water powered corn mill in Worcestershire and a demonstration of flour milling will take place from 2.00pm on both days. The mill is located near the foot of the world famous Shelsley Walsh Motorsport (speed hillclimb course) run by the Midland Automobile Club since 1905 and is adjacent to the beautiful 12th Century Church of St Andrew’s, which is well worth a visit too. Behind the Baton February 2019 saw another successful Wyre Forest Young Musician of the Year competition, where young people including many from The Bewdley School, entertained an enthusiastic audience at St George's Hall. As always, there was a good mix of ages and styles and the professional setup at the Hall allowed these young musicians to gain more valuable experience of performing in a professional setting.
Molly with the guitar she won as part of her prize.
The competition was won by Molly Hipkins whose vocal solo - sung without amplification - was the most polished of many strong performances during an evening also complimented by last year's winner; Danny Bold, entertaining the audience whilst I and my fellow judges deliberated over the various category winners. My only disappointment was the lack of any significant classical entries on a wider range of instruments. I am sure there are young people out there experiencing the pleasure of learning classical music and I do hope we might see some at next year's competition.
Two days later, a sellout audience at St George's Hall was treated to a very special evening headlined by Kiki Dee and Carmelo Luggeri who played at Bewdley Festival a few years ago. Long before Ed Sheeran made the loopback pedal a thing, Luggeri has been a master of this skill and his sensational, virtuoso playing wowed the audience for nearly an hour and a half providing the perfect accompaniment to Dee's soulful and varied vocals. Before Kiki and Carmelo performed, we were treated to a debut performance from a new band called Saving Grace featuring some wonderful vocals from Suzi Dian and the more familiar haunting, husky tones of a certain Robert Plant. The band played a mixture of original songs and covers with a sophisticated and classy feel, Plant's sensitive creative qualities clear to see throughout. It was a special evening – one of those all of us who were lucky enough to be there will never forget. Finally, I want to quickly mention the next concert for Bewdley Choral Society on Saturday 6th April. Following a very successful sellout performance of Messiah, the choir will be presenting a more ethereal programme entitled “Serenade for Spring”. It will feature a varied programme of rich and sumptuous choral and string music including Monteverdi’s Beatus Vir, Barber’s Adagio for Strings, Mozart’s Ave Verum and Elgar’s Serenade for Strings. It should be a very pleasant way to usher in the lighter evenings and it would be lovely to perform this lovely music to another large audience. Alastair Elliott
