The Bridge July 2019
News from St. Anne’s Primary School Chestnut Class Charity Event This year, every class at St Anne’s Primary School has been asked to raise money for a chosen charity. In Key Stage One, Chestnut Class chose the charity ‘The Dogs Trust’, which raises money to look after unwanted dogs that need to be rehomed. The class decided to take part in a sponsored run around the school field as they thought that this is what dogs would love to do! Some of the older children from Year 5/6 also came along to run with them, which really inspired the children of Chestnut Class to run further than they thought they could! The younger children were particularly excited at having taken part in the event. One child said: “It was great fun, but very tiring!” Another, who had just finished their fifteenth lap, shouted: “That was great! Can we do it again?” Well done to all the children who took part. We are very proud of your athletic achievements and we are sure that the Dogs Trust Charity will be over the moon when their representative receives. The final total - over £130 has been raised so far! Chestnut Class Year Six Residential to Cardiff To end our time at St Anne’s, the Year Six children were invited to go on a residential trip to Cardiff to celebrate and make happy memories to end an era. When we arrived at school, there was a lot of nervous but excited energy and A LOT of luggage! The journey seemed long and boring; however it was well worth it as the rest of the time was amazing. As soon as we arrived and had dropped off our belongings at the YHA, we went straight to ‘Techniquest’, a science museum where we were allowed to independently explore. Other activities during the week included: a trip to the beach and museum; walking to a waterfall and caving. However, by far the best activity was when we went swimming! The slides were awesome and the rapid river was crazy. The Year Six trip was an outstanding week and everybody wishes that they could do it all again. Year 6 children St Anne’s School Council Update Our School Council plays a really important role within our school. We meet regularly to discuss how we can make the school a better place. Back in class, we listen to suggestions and then take them to the next meeting. Recently we have organised litter picks, charity events, whole school sporting events and even had the Olympic gymnast Christian Thomas visit. We hope to organise a Mindfulness event during playtime this half term so watch this space! School Council Members

Forgive the autobiographical slant to this month's editorial, but like many people (including my fellow editor) I have recently had my cataracts sorted and am going round adjusting to the change. From muddy sepia, colours now froth and sparkle; they are positively orchestral in their thrilling fanfares. That grass - it's green! Seriously green. In-your-face green. I have some pink roses down the garden. Shouty shockingly pink roses. Pink enough for a whole stableful of My Little Ponies. I spent a profitable five minutes admiring a rather flashy new fishing net I bought yesterday (no, silly; it's to get blanket weed out of my pond). It's eyeball-piercing blue. And did you realise the church in town is zillions of different colours, just quietly, smugly waiting to be congratulated on their sublety. And as for those peonies in next doors' garden - red? Doesn't begin to describe it. There's also discoveries to be made now the world has expanded beyond the end of my nose. Some are lovely. The trees in the forest are very, very complicated. All those little twigs and things. Who knew? Some are less lovely. The most alarming is the sight of my pleated and furrowed face; I don't altogether believe its unironed creasiness. Also the amount of grime I'm spotting round the house - handprints round the light switches, little nests of fluff under the furniture, rococo dangling chandeliers of cobwebs; I may have to do something about it all one day. Here's a thought: I can see all of your wrinkles too now. Maybe I'll get a pair of misted-up glasses to hide the less-happy bits of my new visual acuity. No, everything's much too interesting. I've just spotted a rather cute caterpillar. Scientific fact of the month: The largest eyes in the world belong to the Colossal Squid. Fully-grown squids, in the wild, have eyes that are more than 30 cm―one foot―in diameter, necessary to survive in the squid's deep, dark habitat. Margaret

During this time we welcome our many friends from the town and visitors to the town, with light refreshments available. There are fairly-traded items from around the world for sale too. The church is also open at these times for private prayer. You are always welcome to pray in church, and there is also a side chapel (towards the front on the left-hand side) that you can use if you wish. Here you can light a candle or pin a prayer request on the board. Each week these requests are offered by the regular Saturday morning prayer group. Bewdley Library It's that time of year again when all the libraries in the country partake in the Summer Reading Challenge. The SRC encourages children aged 4 to 11 to read six library books during the long summer holiday. Children's reading can 'dip' during the summer holidays if they don't have regular access to books and encouragement to read for pleasure. The annual Summer Reading Challenge helps get three quarters of a million children into libraries each year to keep up their reading skills and confidence. The Challenge celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. Children can read whatever they like - fiction, fact books, poetry, joke books, picture books, audio books - just as long as they are borrowed from the library. Children receive special rewards each time they finish a book and there's a certificate for everyone who completes the Challenge. The Summer Reading Challenge is open to all primary school aged children and is designed for all reading abilities. Schools work with local libraries and give out information to encourage children to take part. Throughout the Summer Reading Challenge, library staff and teenage and adult volunteers support children, helping them to discover new authors and explore a wide range of different types of books. There is a different Summer Reading Challenge theme each year. The 2019 theme is Space Chase, an out-of-this-world adventure inspired by the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing. Children taking part in the Challenge will join our super space family, The Rockets, for a thrilling mission to track down books nabbed by mischievous aliens! (Starts 13th July). Finally we will also be having our usual display of summer holiday reads; paperbacks ideal for the beach, the hills, the lakes or wherever you're going – there'll be something for everyone.
Bewdley Primary School Bewdley Primary School had much to celebrate in June with the release of their ‘Good’ Ofsted inspection and being awarded 1st place, and the Bewdley Rowing Club Trophy, at Saturday’s Bewdley Carnival. Over 150 children and staff braved the weather to present an impressive float and walking tableau entitled ‘Follow the Yellow Brick Road…’. The Wizard of Oz theme extended to their entertainment which included dancing, singing and kazooing! In the run up to the carnival, all of the Bewdley Primary children enjoyed ‘Arts Week’ which included a variety of art, dance and music workshops. To create the decorations for the float, including life-sized models of the characters, the children used as many recycled materials as possible. 13

We really want to make it a place that is welcoming to the whole community. With this in mind, our July fund raiser (see poster, p25 )will go towards creating a fund to carry out these projects. If you'd like to hear more, please join us at one of our meetings, now held every other month. Please see www.friendsofriversidenorthpark.co.uk for details.

Rail & Ride – with The Severn Valley Railway The event ran for four days in the half term week (Tues 28-Fri 31 May) when each morning adults and children with bikes could travel on the 10.14 from Bewdley with their bikes to Hampton Loade; the SVR had put a special carriage on this train as it had more room for the bikes in the guard’s van. At Hampton Loade they got off then cycled back to Arley along the National Cycle Network Route 45, which is a lovely ride of about 6 miles along paths and quiet country roads. At Arley they could catch any train back to Bewdley with their bikes! The Severn Valley Railway allowed a special Bike Week Fare of only £5 per person. The Train Headboard saying ‘Bewdley Bike Week’ was specially commissioned and in use for the first time last week (see cover photo). Everyone really enjoyed it. Here are some of the comments from participants: “We had a fantastic time yesterday. The steam train was a true joy and the cycle back a delight. Hooray for Bewdley Bike Week!”
“It was a great family day!” “A fabulous, family fun train and bike ride. We had such a great time we decided to ride all the way back to Bewdley! SVR staff were extremely helpful and friendly and we met some great people to enjoy our day with! Well done Bewdley Bike Week!” Altogether more than 50 people took part with ages ranging from 6 to 70 years.
Bewdley Bike ‘Jam’ in Jubilee Park The smoothie bike is a pedal powered mixer. Fruit was generously supplied free by Bewdley Farm Shop and we had a steady stream of young riders keen to make and mix their own drinks.

Transition Bewdley Repair Café and international trends We were fascinated to see a report from the International Repair Café Foundation on 8,000 repairs carried out in 2018. There are now thousands of Repair Cafés throughout the world but the sample was of 34 Repair Cafés in the Netherlands, USA, UK and Australia. In the sample, the 10 most common items to be brought for repair were Coffee Machines (654), Vacuum Cleaners (425), Lamps (403), Bicycles (402), Trousers (401), Sewing Machines (242), Coats (145), Irons (141), Clocks (183), Laptops (131). 65% of all repairs were successful. In many cases it turned out that items were not really broken, but mainly needed maintenance. Simple tasks such as cleaning, descaling or lubricating were often enough to make a product work again. Bewdley Repair Café was not part of the sample but it was interesting to compare it with our own observations. Our success rate is closer to 70%, partly perhaps because we get very few coffee machines which are particularly hard to repair. We do get many lamps which are nearly always repaired. In one session, 12 different table lamps were repaired. We also get a lot of vacuum cleaners which are often repaired. Our sewing team achieve almost 100% success in mending garments. The international sample included many bicycles, no doubt because of the many Dutch Cafés in the sample. We rarely get bicycles except at our annual bike workshop in May when 21 bikes were repaired and serviced (100% success). However, most of our repairers are well able to fix punctures, adjust brakes etc. so we welcome bikes at any time. Very few laptops are brought in but a couple of our repairers can often at least diagnose problems and advise on the next step. We get a few sewing machines which are often repairable. Over 75% of clocks brought in are successfully repaired. Items which did not make the top 10 internationally but which are commonly brought to Bewdley include kettles (often just need de-scaling to prevent premature cut-out), hairdryers, power tools, heaters, radios, toys and furniture all of which are more often repaired than not. Our tool sharpening team are kept busy and nearly always successful. We find that it’s the better quality, more expensive ‘brands’ like Dualit, Roberts, Dyson and GHD who are more likely to make spare parts available or offer out-of-warranty repair services. Modern unbranded or cheaper generic products are less likely to be repairable. Conversely, older ‘vintage’ or ‘classic’ products are more likely to be repairable and our repairers love dealing with these. We look forward to seeing all these items and many more on 20th July and again on 21st September when we resume after our August break. John Rhymer 21

Bewdley 11 20 Festival OCTOBER
LIVE MUSIC COMEDY INSIGHTS & MORE
Tickets available at:
www.bewdleyfestival.org.uk or call in to the St. George’s Hall
This October Bewdley Festival OFFERS SOMETHING FOR ALL
Ticket sales for this year’s Bewdley Festival have made a fast start, with one performance (Jon Culshaw & Bill Dare) completely sold out after just 昀ve weeks! All other shows are selling very quickly, so our advice is to buy your tickets as soon as possible to make sure you don’t miss out. Here are just a few highlights of this year’s artists; the full programme is available in our Festival brochure and at www.bewdleyfestival.org.uk. You can buy your tickets on-line or call in to the Festival of昀ce in the St. George’s Hall (10.00am – 2.00pm).
DAYTIME
(SGH – St Georges Hall; BBC – Bewdley Baptist Church) Star Wars, BB-8 and inter-galactic excitement will all be on display when puppeteer extraordinaire BRIAN HERRING reveals some of the secrets behind the 昀lming of the most iconic of 昀lm franchises, together with some of his creations in an afternoon that will delight all ages. (SGH, Saturday 12th October 2.30pm) John Ruskin and William Morris both made lasting contributions to the Wyre Forest and during the 200th anniversary of Ruskin’s death. CLIVE WILMER, Master of the Guild of St. George, explores and explains their connection and their motives. (BBC, 14th Oct, 2.30pm) Locally we may know sculptor MARK RICHARDS for his creation of the John Bonham Memorial in Redditch, but there is much more to Mark than one piece of work. Whilst this talk will focus on “Bonzo” he will also bring tales of creating statues of the famous; coins and medals; waxworks and garden centre-pieces commissioned by the rich and famous from the Royal Family downwards. (BBC, 15th Oct, 2.30pm) Midlands football and English cricket have been enlivened for over 35 years by PAT MURPHY’S work for the BBC. He will regale us with tales of our heroes whilst providing humour and insights into a world often not available to we mere mortals. (BBC, 16th Oct, 2.30pm) At our 昀rst Festival in 1988, one of the performers was Laurie Lee. Documentary maker DAVID PARKER made some of the last recordings of Laurie, and he will be telling us what those recording reveal. (SGH, 17th, 10.30am) Uncertain whether riding alone around Iran on a motor-cycle is the ideal summer break, but travel writer LOIS PRYCE did just that. She will entertain us with the stories of her great adventure and how it made her question the stereotyped image of a long misunderstood culture. (SGH, 18th, 2.30pm)
EVENING
(Festival Theatre, Mercure Bewdley Heath Hotel – 8.00pm) We are privileged to have ELIZA & MARTIN CARTHY opening the 32nd Festival, together with a unique band featuring long-time collaborators Duotone and Sheema Mukherjee, and dancer Ewan Wardrop. They will be performing her acclaimed new work “East”, which Eliza compiled, curated and composed in collaboration with her father. It is a collection of musical and other works inspired by the myths, legends, poems and ballads of the East of England from Northumberland to Suffolk. (11th Oct) KATE HUMBLE is a well-recognised face on television particularly for her wildlife programmes. She has lived a life in far-昀ung places and specialises in inspiring people with her work. There seems little doubt she will be giving some inspiring insights to our audience on an evening that offers wide appeal (14th Oct) TV presenter, radio personality and self-confessed social drinker local lad ADRIAN CHILES – being interviewed by Gerry Foley – will undoubtedly be telling stories that fascinate, and who knows, perhaps reveal a few secrets of the entertainment business as well. (15th Oct) DANNY BAKER has always been controversial, whilst BOB HARRIS has always been everybody’s “Whisperin’” friend. They are also long-standing pals and agreed to chat for us here in Bewdley in a one-off evening that they tell us will be “two old rock’n’roll broadcaster buddies chewing the fat about their careers and the meaning of life”. Bewdley Festival is proud and privileged to welcome them for a unique and exclusive evening. (16th Oct) Traditionally the festival has focused the music spots on well-known artists. This year we break with tradition by bringing two of the most popular, fastest rising artists in the UK today on a double bill that provides fabulous value for money - ORPHAN COLOURS (from London) and PETE WILLIAMS (from the Black Country). Both have appeared at “Music in the Hall” here and brought the house down, so don’t be doubtful of the quality. These are two of the top bands in the country. (19th Oct)

Bewdley Medical Centre We have asked one of our GPs to document a normal working day to give the readers an idea about what life is like as a local GP. “My working day starts by 7.45am. I touch base with Reception to collect prescriptions, reports and urgent messages. With our telephone appointment system, I start with calls assessing the needs of each patient. Some will need to be seen in person and we book an appointment with the appropriate team member. With fewer GPs our team now includes Advanced Nurse Practitioners (ANPs) who are highly trained in most primary care problems, Practice Nurses who deal with minor illnesses, Orthopaedic Practitioners for musculoskeletal problems and Pharmacists. We are a training practice with medical students and trainee GPs too; this allows the GP appointments to be used for our more complex patients. In my morning session I make around 30 telephone calls. We allocate 5 minutes for each call during which we will discuss the problem in depth. By asking questions about duration and severity of symptoms, it helps form a diagnosis and treatment plan. The team try to grab a 10minute coffee mid-morning to keep us fresh and catch up with any problems. Morning surgery runs straight into our lunchtime meeting where we review all referrals and a colleague presents a disease update. This afternoon I am Duty Doctor, having contact with all of our emergency patients. I also discuss cases with the ANPs, support the Practice Nurses with advice and issuing prescriptions, take calls from paramedics and the hospital and deal with any urgent results! It could be a patient suffering a heart attack or a baby with a rash – the variety is one of the joys of General Practice. By 6.30pm hopefully all of the patients have been seen. Then I usually have 50-60 prescriptions to process, 20-30 patient letters and x-ray results to action, about 100 blood test results to check and several messages with queries about patient care. Finally home time.” BEWDLEY CIVIC SOCIETY BALSAM BASH VOLUNTEERS NEEDED! After 3 years the Society is making a noticeable difference to the local area by preventing further colonization by the rapidly spreading non native Himalayan Balsam. The campaign is over 4 days: Saturday July 27th and Monday-Wednesday 29-31st. Please meet at 10am on Severn Side South at the benches below the bridge. Boots and gloves are advised due to possible encounters with nettles and brambles. Enquiries to stevenclivebent@aol.com 29

Bewdley Carnival
Although the sun was reluctant to appear at the annual Bewdley Carnival on Saturday 8th June the day was a great success This year we had the largest parade we have had for many years with 28 floats being led by Bewdley Fire Brigade and Bewdley Band followed by this year's princesses: Alexia Freeman age 5 and Evie Cook aged 9 and from St Anne’s School Kimberley Gameson age 9 and Emelia Botfield age 5. The rain did finally stop as the parade travelled through the town. The standard of the floats was extremely high and the judges had a very hard job to decide the winners. The decorated shop window competition was won by Park Royal. A wonderful day was brought to an exciting end when Bewdley Town Council very kindly put on the firework display with dry weather for the crowds to enjoy the fabulous display. We are only a small committee who work very hard to make sure all goes well and is safe for the crowds who attend each year. We would like to extend our thanks to all who helped on the day. We could not do it without this help. Carnival Committee.

The Changing Face of Load Street Part II The Friends of Bewdley Museum are delighted to present The Changing Face of Load Street Part II. Opening in Bewdley Museum on 13th July 2019 the exhibition will focus on 24 shops not previously featured. Take a moment to reflect how much Load Street has changed; how many shops do we have now? Our 2017 exhibition was inspired by the collection of photos left to the town by Ken Hobson who led the Bewdley Civic Society for many years. A dedicated team of volunteers have continued to work on the collection. There is a large street plan of Load Street for 1881, detailing the name and business of the occupants of each building. The exhibition runs until the 29th September. If you have any photos, memories or stories to add we would like to hear from you. The Friends of the Museum are working with the museum to get the Toll Board that was on Bewdley Bridge in about 1800 out of the store and on display. Currently in Birmingham for conservation work; we hope to see it back in Bewdley later in the summer.

VACANCIES FOR BOARD TRUSTEES Covering North West Worcestershire, Community Transport Wyre Forest is a charity. We provide a door to door transport service using volunteer drivers’ own cars and our own wheelchair accessible minibuses for anyone who finds it difficult to use public transport and needs access to health, shopping, social and other day to day opportunities. We run journeys to the doctors, dentists and hospitals, shops, a wide range of social gatherings or just to meet up with friends and relatives. We've seen a 50% increase in demand over the past six years and need to recruit additional Trustees to join our board. Community Transport Helpline Ltd trading as Community Transport Wyre Forest is established as a charity. This means that the organisation is governed by a board of Trustees who are responsible for the good governance of the organisation and for providing strategic direction. Our Chief Officer is responsible for the day to day management of the organisation and she reports to the board of Trustees. The board of Trustees meets formally for no longer than two hours every month to consider a wide range of issues including finance and fundraising, operational performance, accommodation, volunteer numbers and vehicle purchase. Additionally, Trustees can take on other duties to support the organisation which are carried out between meetings to suit their particular interests. More information can be found on The Charity Commission's website https://www.gov.uk/guidance/charity-trustee-whats-involved We are particularly interested in applications from women and men who have experience as a Company Secretary, fundraising, IT or in the governance of organisations but we would welcome applications from people with other experience to move our organisation forward. If you are interested, please feel free to contact Robert Smith on 01299 409137 for an informal chat or look at our website www.ctwyre.org.uk. Written expressions of interest to join the board must be made to Robert Smith, Chairman, Community Transport Wyre Forest, St George’s Hall, Load Street, Bewdley DY12 2EQ by 31 July 2019. If you’d like to volunteer for us in other ways such as joining our driver team or helping out in the office please contact Beverley Coldrick, Chief Officer on 01299 669840.

Bewdley - the Chess-friendly Town The aim of Bewdley Chess is to get all the venues in Bewdley to have a chess set on their premises so visitors to the town can play Chess. Bewdley is well known for its river, the Severn Valley Railway, West Midlands Safari Park and its beautiful walks in the forest. We believe Chess in Bewdley will create an added interest for our community. The Courtyard Riverside Café was the first venue to support our initiative in becoming a Chess Friendly Town. Our latest venue to support us is the Arches Hairdresser's, Dog Lane. We would love to hear from any other venues in the town who would be interested in joining the initiative. July in the Forest Our fields are a picture at the moment: the various grasses are tall and in flower, thanks to the buttercups and pignuts there are swathes of yellow and white, with pink and purple accents of vetch and clover. Butterflies and other pollinators rise from the flowers as you walk through and grasshoppers ‘ping’ away from your feet. Not all of this will last the month as it’s hay-making time. The flatter fields will be cut, turned twice and, if the weather is kind, bound in small bales all within a week. (This year polythene baler twine will be replaced by natural sisal – our contribution to the plastics ban.) Then human power takes over to load the bales and stack them in the barn. Grazing is an important part of this traditional farming practice. Our resident sheep are currently grazing the big cherry orchard, which means that there won’t be enough grass for hay-making. On the top and ‘hay’ fields, the sheep moved off a while ago so the grass has been able to make good growth and will be worth cutting. We’ve been following this pattern for 15 years now, and can see how the wild flowers and grasses have spread through the pasture. Conservation management is not the same as gardening: it’s knowing enough about the habitats, ecology and life-cycles of species to make sure that any interventions you make are beneficial rather than harmful. People have been having an impact on nature so long on these islands that there is no ‘wild’. The diversity of wildlife is a result of traditional land practices. You can see this in the Wyre’s woodland, which has been felled and coppiced for hundreds of years. Over recent years, the Guild of St George has been catching up with oak thinning and ride widening, which has been necessarily drastic but now we are seeing the beneficial results. In Shelf Held Coppice there are two new rides which have been colonised by Pearl Bordered Fritillary butterflies. This is a wonderful victory for Butterfly Conservation and all the others who have developed policies for making conditions right for the butterflies. For your education, and because they’re very beautiful, here are Mick Farmer’s photos of both the Pearl Bordered and Small Pearl Bordered Fritillaries, which both love sheltered rides and the nectar-rich brambles which line them. If you can get a view of the undersides of the hind wings, the Small PBF gives itself away with more white ‘pearls’, a central black spot and an edging of black chevrons. As these two species are threatened nationally we are delighted that the Wyre Forest has thriving and increasing populations. Linda Iles
