The Bridge August 2019
August in the Forest Thanks to some fine, settled weather and invaluable help from the Wyre Community Land Trust volunteers, the hay was cut, baled and brought in with no problems last month. You’ll be pleased to hear that the old-fashioned sisal baler twine worked well and will become the twine of choice here at Uncllys! The garden bird feeders are almost knee deep in baby Blue and Great Tits, forced aside regularly by the Great Spotted Woodpecker family. The woodpeckers are rather wary of our presence and veer off with a loud squawk if they see us nearby. They are a species that has benefited greatly from garden peanut feeders but still rely on old trees, mainly in the forest and old orchards, in which to bore a nest hole. The British Trust for Ornithology’s Nestbox Guide gives instructions how to try and attract Great Spotted Woodpeckers to use mediumsized birdboxes by stuffing them with rotten wood, which the birds can then excavate. It seems a lot of trouble when there is plenty of old wood round here. Our efforts in putting up bird boxes are beginning to bring results with the smaller birds. An increasing and vociferous gang of House Sparrows use some boxes near the house and a gap in the masonry of the north-facing wall (we’ve no idea how many are in there!). Redstarts have made fleeting appearances in past years but this year our friend Elaine pointed out that a pair were nesting in a box fixed to one of our young apple trees. As it was fairly near the house we were able to keep an eye on progress and latterly to hear the parents and fledgling(s?) calling to each other as feeding was carried out. The birdbox they used was shaded by the lower branches of the tree and a lower twig was used by the adults to land and check that the coast was clear – both factors that probably contributed to its attractiveness to the birds. Thanks again to Mick Farmer, who managed to take some fantastic pictures of the parent birds, in this case the male. Another way in which we try to help wildlife is to put out small sections of corrugated iron on the ground to provide reptiles with safe places to bask (safe, that is, from buzzards). We lift them regularly and are rewarded with sightings of Slow-worms, Grass Snakes and Common Lizards (in declining order of frequency). Grass Snakes like compost heaps and grass piles for breeding and the eggs generally hatch in August, as do those of Slow-worms, although I’m wondering if they are earlier this year judging from the tiny individual I’ve already seen under one of the tins.

This month I am speaking on behalf of all us shorties. I'm one of them, being rather vertically challenged at just over 150 of fun-packed centimetres. This is roughly the height of a useful shelf, mantelpiece, or a cupboard. A moment's thought will show you that this inevitably means I can't see what's on the shelf, mantelpiece or cupboard. Irritating. But not insurmountable. I can jump up and down or find something to stand on like a discarded box or small child. Less handy is to be in a supermarket only to discover that the shelf on which are stacked the artichokes, sumac extract or.... OK, more likely baked beans in my case - is the top shelf. I have to wait for someone possessed of more centimetres to come along before piping, at the level of their kneecaps, "Would you mind reaching me a can of beans, please?". In the great outdoors someone is bound to say, "Oh look! There's a hare/bee orchid/ hippo/ nudist camp in that field". I strain to see more than an unremarkable hawthorn hedge and have to content myself with the greenfly on the leaves. Now let's come to an even bigger annoyance. Apparently us shorties are invisible in crowds. I have lost count of the number of near tramplings I have avoided only by dint of nifty footwork. Walking along Severnside on a sunny Sunday means that quite often it would be sensible to don a pair of waterwings just in case. One day I'm going to carry an oldfashioned umbrella and stick it out just at ankle height. Being past the age when I can afford to wear eye-catching necklines or exiguous skirts, I'm thinking about a high-vis jacket or sticking a traffic cone on my head. Maybe a flashing bicycle lamp? The coward's way out is to go as companion to a towering person. But they all walk with huge footsteps at a pace that leaves me twinkling breathlessly along in their wake. The last solution will have to be grinning and bearing it. Grrr. Scientific Fact of the month: Tardigrades, often called moss piglets, are near-microscopic animals with long, plump bodies and scrunched-up heads. They have eight legs, and hands with four to eight claws on each. While strangely cute, these tiny animals are almost indestructible and can survive being completely dried out or exposed to the radiation of outer space. Margaret

Bewdley Library August finds a new library system underway across the libraries of Worcestershire. 'Symphony' is replacing our Tallis system, which has been in operation for many years and is now set to retire. We're hoping that the transfer between the two will run smoothly but as always with these things there will undoubtedly be the occasional hiccup. Many members use the online system and catalogue, which will also be changing, so if you could bear with us while we iron out any problems we would be grateful. The system will not affect our public computers and printing facilities, but as these are also approaching their sell by date these will be upgraded later in the year. The Summer Reading Challenge, the national and annual reading scheme for children aged 4 to 11, is well under way and there is still plenty of time for anyone to join until well into September. As of the beginning of July (when I write this) we still don't know the outcome of the Library Review but we will keep you posted as soon as we find out. Finally we still have a large selection of holiday/beach reads selected from libraries around the county on display, so if you haven't gone on holiday yet pop in and get one!
Bewdley Community Theatre Bewdley Community Theatre Group’s pantomime, Aladdin, is to be staged in January 2020. Preparations are well underway with all the principal roles now filled. We are very excited to bring this great performance to you during the Christmas festive period. We are looking for costume designers and seamstresses to support our wardrobe team. If you have any spare time and fancy getting involved, please get in touch with Kyle at bewdleyctg@hotmail.com. We would also like to invite volunteers to join the lighting team both for our set-up and performances. Please get in touch if you fancy getting involved! The theatre group is also expanding, with plans to provide a range of performances throughout 2019-20 to complement our annual pantomime in the diary for 2021. For more information about the Theatre Group and how to become part of the family, please contact bewdleyctg@hotmail.com. 13

Plastic Free Bewdley Most of us, as a result of programmes such as “Blue Planet 2” and Hugh FearnleyWhittingstall’s “War on Plastic” series on BBC1, are now aware of the problems caused by single-use plastics, yet it is not easy to avoid them. Following on from the Plastic Pollution meeting hosted by Transition Bewdley, attended by over 100 people, Bewdley Town Council have unanimously approved a motion to work with community organisations to become a “Plastic Free Town”. Councillor Simon Collingridge has agreed to chair the steering group for the project, which is supported by Transition Bewdley and several other local organisations including the Pickup Artists and Bewdley Rowing Club. District Councillor Anna Coleman has already pledged £200 from her Ward fund to support the project. In order to gain accreditation as a “Plastic Free Community” we will work with local businesses, churches, schools and community spaces to help them use less single-use plastic. There will also be plastic free events such as community clean-ups led by the Pickup Artists and perhaps a Mass-unwrap at a local Supermarket to highlight the problems of too much plastic packaging. At the public meeting over 40 people volunteered to assist with community initiatives. We have talked to several businesses and we are inspired by what they are already doing to reduce single-use plastic and their willingness to do more. Sharon Cartwright is running a series of “Practice Less Plastic” surgeries for groups and individuals to help people identify how they can reduce their use of single-use plastics in their everyday lives. Transition Volunteers have been recruiting local Pubs and Cafés to become re-fill stations and encourage people to get their water-bottles refilled rather than buy single-use bottles of water. Look for the blue signs in windows of participating businesses or use the Refill App on a smart-phone. It is expected that this will encourage more visitors, particularly walkers and cyclists, to visit the town and support local businesses. We want to hear from local businesses and organisations who are already working on reducing plastics and invite them to join us as “Plastic Free Champions” or if they are just beginning and would like support. We would also love to hear from more individuals who would like to help. Please email info@plasticfreebewdley.co.uk. Foundry Artist Annual Exhibition Saturday 3rd – Saturday 31st August 2019 Open daily 10.30am - 4pm Foundry Artists’ 2019 exhibition is in Hilary’s historic studio above the Brass Foundry in Bewdley Museum. Entry to the Museum and the Exhibition is free and it is open every day from 10.30am until 4pm from the 3rd to 31st August. Artists will be there to talk about their work, which will be on sale, whilst demonstrating techniques such as printmaking and watercolour painting. Foundry Artists are a group of Worcestershire artists who attend weekly workshops with artist Hilary Baker in her studio at Bewdley Museum. Summerdyne Nursing Home Here is a picture of our crafting group called “Having a Yarn”. We have completed our latest project of knitting or crocheting squares to support the Wyre Forest Rangers who are planning to yarn Bomb a tree in the Wyre Forest to celebrate 100 years of the Forestry Commission. We have donated over a hundred squares, which the Rangers are collecting. Our residents have felt a real sense of involvement with the local community - and that’s what its all about!
Hedgehog on the move During a break in the rain last week we spotted this hedgehog in our garden around 6pm. He or she made a complete curcuit of the lawn in search of worms coming up for air. It’s the first time we have seen a hedgehog in the garden, but it may be due to the
hedgehog friendly gate. MF & BEF According to the British Hedgehog Preservation Society : Hedgehogs roam between 1-2km each night during their active season. It’s therefore critical that they can access a wide range of gardens. 13cm x 13cm (5 x 5”) holes in walls or fences will let hedgehogs through but be too small for most pets. Hedgehog folklore Taking milk from cows People once thought that hedgehogs sucked milk from cows. It is unlikely that a hedgehog could manage this, although they could lap up leaking liquid from a full udder. Milk also makes hedgehogs ill as they are lactose intolerant, so it is important to only ever leave them water to drink. Carrying fruit on their spines During medieval times, people all over the world believed hedgehogs could carry fruit on their spines. But, hedgehogs usually walk along with their spines flattened, and they would struggle to impale any fruit on themselves. So this myth is almost certainly untrue. Immune to snakebites It has been suggested that hedgehogs are immune to snake bites. Research shows hedgehogs have a partial resistance to snake venom. But, a bite to the face or leg would still make a hedgehog very ill, and could even kill it. The only venomous snake in Britain is the adder, which is incapable of biting a hedgehog through its spines.

Bewdley Medical Centre You Said, We Did – How Can Patients Access Bewdley Medical Centre
After two and a half years of running a phone call first system for GP appointments, we asked for feedback from patients and staff. While most of our patients are happy with the system, many do not feel it suits their needs. It has always been difficult to get the right balance of appropriate appointments to the right patients at the right time and we have worked hard on analysing data, reviewing our processes and most importantly listening to our patients’ feedback to find a booking process that works best for all. The main underlying issue that all GP surgeries have to contend with is a lack of GPs. Bewdley Medical Centre have been unable to recruit from our most recent advert in July 2019; this means we all have to look at how we work to ensure every appointment is needed. After much consultation we have decided to change the way that you access appointments at Bewdley Medical Centre. From Monday 9 September when you call the surgery you will be asked a series of questions by our trained Care Navigators. We ask that you give our Care Navigators as much information as possible so they can book you an appropriate appointment; from the information that you provide, the Care Navigator will be able to book you in with either a telephone consultation with a GP, Advanced Nurse Practitioner, Nurse or Pharmacist or if it is clear that this is needed - a face to face consultation. Whilst we transition and fine tune our patient access from the current telephone triage process to our new Care Navigation, we ask that you are supportive and patient; there may be times when you call into the surgery and your symptoms are considered slightly more complex for our Care Navigator team to deal with at the time; they will seek guidance from our GPs to ensure that our service to you remains safe at all times. For more information about our Patient and GP feedback, or Care Navigation and the booking procedure, please visit our website. 25

Remembering James the Grocers James' the Grocer's shop used to be where the launderette is today on the corner of Load Street. It was owned by Mr Jack James, and it gave me my first job when I left school at 15 years old. It was a good job and taught me many useful skills. I learned how to talk politely to customers, how to use the telephone and answer customers when they rang their order in. It nearly taught me to drive, but in the end that never happened. Another skill, still very useful, was doing calculations in my head; adding up money - and don't forget we're talking about pounds, shillings and pence, much trickier than decimal money - and quickly totting up a bill. When an order was taken, we would weigh out the sugar, sultanas, rice and other dry ingredients into bags made out of blue sugar paper. The foodstuffs were kept in a big chest that had drawers in with polished brass handles. I can't remember if I had to polish them. I expect I did! Butter and cheese were kept cool on a marble slab before being cut, weighed and wrapped in greaseproof paper. Bacon was cut by the big baconslicer. When the order was completed, it would be delivered in the shop's van. Sometimes I could go out and help deliver to some of the farms down Dowles Road. In wintertime that would mean wearing wellies and battling the wet and mud; sometimes it was snow I had to get through. Customers expected their groceries to arrive whatever the weather. The shop in wintertime was heated by an electric fire with a single bar, which hardly made any difference to the freezing temperature. Occasionally we would huddle round the old refrigerator out the back where it was slightly warmer and the cat would be sleeping in the piled-up cardboard boxes. I certainly remember the awful chilblains I had on my hands and feet. In spite of the hard and sometimes uncomfortable times I had at James', I have happy memories of all the familiar faces of workmates and customers from that time. Margaret Moule nee Lester

Recycling in Bewdley I have set up a scheme in my shop to allow local residents, businesses, offices and schools to drop off items that are not easily recycled elsewhere. Crisps and snack packets, biscuit and cake wrappers, pet food pouches, bread bags, bottle tops / caps, clean foil, batteries, spectacles, ink cartridges, shoes and all types of footwear are collected. In the six months the plastic recycling scheme has been running, we estimate about 40,000 crisp packets, 3,000 pet food pouches, 1,500 bread bags and 5,000 biscuit / cake wrappers have been collected. The recycling Company, Terracycle, makes a payment to our chosen charities, Guide Dogs for the Blind, local charity Mentor Link, Birmingham Children's Hospital and the MS Society. We collect the bottle tops, foil, batteries, spectacles and ink cartridges for the Kidderminster based Emily Jordan Foundation. All of the items can be dropped off at the shop, Bewdley Cobblers, 17 Load Street, Bewdley. The local community has really supported the Scheme. Let's keep it going, everyone! Brynn Hazelwood

Our conference in June about Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) was very informative. Two hundred million women and girls worldwide have been affected by FGM including 137,000 in the UK. Our keynote speaker, Gillian Squires, said that prevention is the key, as punishment for acts already committed can be counterproductive as girls generally do not wish to have their parents prosecuted and communities are silent as they feel FGM is part of their culture. Rose Morimbo Simbo shared her personal experience. Rose is committed to speaking out about what happened to her so that other girls do not have to suffer the same fate. Through her charity, the Kori Development Project in Sierra Leone, she strives to make a difference to their lives. By winning their trust she hopes to change their culture away from cutting girls. Alison Byrne, a specialist midwife saw her first case of FGM 17 years ago when a young woman who was a victim of the most severe form of FGM was about to give birth. She now runs one of a small number of specialist clinics in the UK and sees patients from all over the country. Janice Bell, President of Soroptimist Kidderminster and District said, ‘This is an uncomfortable topic and for many may seem to be irrelevant to us here in Worcestershire but hearing the women’s stories and trying to understand why this practice is still so prevalent may help to bring pressure to eradicate it.’ Women inspiring action, transforming lives 37

News from St Anne’s Primary School Goodbye Year Six! Once again, at the end of the Summer term, we say goodbye to our wonderful Year Six – Class of 2019! They have been very busy in their last few weeks at primary school taking part in many transitional projects such as the ‘Fiver Challenge’, where they had to raise as much money as possible by using just five pound start-up money. They also experienced a taster day at High School. At the end of term, not only did they perform in an amazing show called ‘Robin Hood and the Sherwood Hoodies’ but also took part in a more formal Leavers’ Service at St Anne’s Church. As a celebration of their time in school, a beach-themed Leavers’ Party was thrown for them at the school to say a final farewell. It has been a pleasure to teach them at St Anne’s during their final year and we look forward to hearing about all of their future achievements and wish them the best of luck as they move on to high school. StAnfest On Friday 5th July, we held our annual PTA-organised summer fayre more fondly-known as StAnFest – which raises substantial amounts of money to support the school to buy items that an ever-decreasing budget cannot provide. This year, the theme of the children’s entertainment was ‘Power Ballads’ with some excellent performances from all classes and some highly entertaining individual and group acts from each year group. Tombolas, games, stalls and food and drink stands kept the crowds happy for the afternoon and the sun shone brightly making the event a roaring success! We look forward to finding out the total amount raised and we are sure that the children will benefit enormously with the proceeds. A huge thank you to our hard-working PTA! Sports Day Both of the Key Stage Sports Days were very successful as, this year, miraculously, the sun was out and neither of our Key Stage Sports Days were rained off! Great performances, effort, determination and sportsmanship were shown by the children and all of the staff and parents were very proud. Thank you to pupils from The Bewdley School who came to help out at the Key Stage One event – they were a credit to their school too! Reception’s Fathers and Grandfathers’ Lunch Recently, Reception children invited their dads and grandads to join them for a scrummy roast dinner. The dads and grandads really enjoyed the experience of coming in and spending some time with their children and, of course, the chocolate cake really topped off the event! Thank you to all of the fantastic lunchtime staff for making special events like this possible! 41

‘Help with reading’ group celebrates Read Easy Wyre Forest recently held its launch event and first birthday party at Kidderminster College. The not-for-profit group, which came into being last year, recruits and trains volunteer reading coaches. Those reading coaches then give one-to-one confidential tuition to local adults who either don’t read at all or who struggle with their reading. The group is well represented in Bewdley in a number of ways. The scheme’s co-ordinator and a number of reading coaches hail from Bewdley and the group has generous assistance from All Saints’ and St Anne’s churches and St George’s Hall in providing accommodation where readers and their coaches can meet. Bewdley Rotary Club is also very supportive of the group’s activities. Anyone needing help with reading (or interested in becoming a reading coach or in the work of the management team) can contact the Read Easy Wyre Forest scheme coordinator, Liz, for more information on 07895 847728 or email her at liz3@readeasy.org.uk
