The Bridge September 2019

September in the Forest I thought you might like to see my photo of this rather large snake found tangled in netting in a friend’s garden recently. I was called for advice and hurried along, hoping or fearing to find an Adder, which I still haven’t seen in the Wyre Forest. The yellow collar and sheer size gave it away as a Grass Snake (probably a female), harmless but still formidable, especially when hissing and emitting a powerful stink in its defence. It was estimated at about 3 feet long, so well short of the record 6 feet according to Stefan Buczacki’s Fauna Britannica. It was eventually cut free and soon disappeared, unharmed. The singing of the Robin heralds the start of autumn and the year’s harvest has moved on to blackberries and crab apples, damsons and sloes. The beautiful fruits of the Rowan are attracting Blackbirds and Mistle Thrushes and I wonder how much longer supplies will last. The wild and dog roses in the hedgerows are beginning to show their red hips, reminding those of us of the war-time and post war generations of delicious rose hip syrup being spooned into our young mouths to boost our Vitamin C levels. The hips were gathered throughout the countryside: about 450 tons a year between 1943 and 1945 according to Simon Fletcher in A Wyre Forest Diary. The seeds are the source of the irritating country itching powder popped down other schoolchildren’s backs, so they must be removed before boiling the pulp with its own weight in sugar and straining the resulting syrup. Heather and gorse flowers brighten the woodland edges and heaths and provide plenty of early autumn food for bees and other nectar-loving insects. Acorns and beech mast are ripening and the first of the autumn colour is appearing: wild cherry showing red and purple, orange on the deciduous European larch, and yellow on birch and some of the oaks. It’s changeover time, with swallows and martins preparing to leave on their migration flights to Africa. They do this by massing in large groups and juvenile house martins may help their parents to feed the last, late broods of young still in the cup-shaped nests of mud attached under the eaves of houses. Sand martins are brown and white in contrast to the black and white of the house martins and can be seen darting across the river surface in Bewdley. Efforts were made to accommodate them in the quay walls when the flood defences were built and they still breed there. The badgers will be changing over their bedding too, replacing the summer’s grass, bracken or straw with a thick layer of fresh material. Even for a badger there must be nothing like a freshly-made bed. Linda Iles

Welcome to September’s edition of The Bridge. This month’s magazine is full of news and events for the new season. Linda Iles celebrates the first signs of autumn in our hedgerows and woodland. Read her article inside the front cover about this time of change in the natural world. Staff and students at The Bewdley School are excited about a prestigious International Conference taking place at the school this autumn. See the centre colour pages to find out what’s being planned and how you can help the wider world to come to Bewdley. During the summer, Bewdley’s army of volunteers have continued to be busy. Between them, two groups have raised almost £11,000 for good causes. Turn to the centre colour pages to find out how the Bewdley Rock Save the Children group had fun raising money to support the valuable work of this charity in its 100th year. See page 21 to read about Bewdley Rotary Club’s Golf Day which raised money which will be distributed to local charities later this year. The project to raise funds to repair the ceiling of All Saints’ Church is in full swing this autumn. The aim is to have the building back in full use as soon as possible. Find out the latest news on page 21 and turn to page 13 for information about a big fundraising event this month. Transition Bewdley is part of a movement that aims to address big challenges by working locally. The Bewdley group runs the very successful Repair Café in St. George’s Hall and is currently working with the Town Council and other partners to eliminate single use plastic in Bewdley. Read the latest news from the group on page 15 including information on Refill Stations - places in the town where water bottles can be refilled with tap water free of charge. And find out just how much recyclable litter was picked up from Bewdley streets in an hour. And lastly we look forward to Bewdley Festival’s action-packed American Epic themed weekend when Main Street USA comes to town in October. Read all about it on page 43. Gill

Church News l ST ANNE’S HOSTS A FLOWER FESTIVAL CELEBRATION AND CONCERT: 4th - 7th OCTOBER Bewdley Floral Art is celebrating its Emerald Anniversary by holding a Festival of Flowers in St Anne’s church in the middle of Load Street from Friday 4th – Monday 7th October. The last festival in the church celebrated a Golden Heritage of the Bewdley area, with the memorable flock of white doves swooping down over the chancel. This year’s festival entitled ‘Our Garden So Green’ takes its theme from the current trend of back to nature and enjoyment of the natural world. The outside garden is brought into the church where you will be able to sit at a natural table and ‘sleep’ on a bed made from moss and flowers. A highlight of the weekend is a Saturday evening concert with the Kidderminster Valentine’s Choir. Sit and enjoy the wonderful floral designs to some delightful music.

Community News

Repair Café News. July’s Repair Café was particularly busy with at least 70 visitors and 85 repairs undertaken. This included several garden tools that were sharpened and refurbished. We expect even more garden tools to arrive when we meet again on 15th September after August’s break as people prepare to subdue their gardens ready for autumn. News of Bewdley Repair Café will be spread round the world. Small items such as washers, bolts and brackets donated from our repairers were used to decorate a pocket which was submitted for a travelling exhibition “Pockets of Sedition” which at the time was in Stourport Civic Centre. The Bewdley Repair Café "pocket" has been accepted for the exhibition and is now on its way, together with many other pockets created and decorated by individuals and organisations on a tour first of the UK then to Australia followed by other parts of the world.

Refill Project As part of “Plastic Free Bewdley”, Transition Bewdley volunteers have already signed up over 24 cafés, restaurants and other businesses in Bewdley who have agreed to become Refill Stations. They will refill water bottles with tap water for free. 7.7 billion plastic water bottles are bought each year in the UK and 5.5 billion of these are NOT recycled. So people who get their water bottles refilled are helping to reduce the 15 million plastic bottles that are littered, land-filled or incinerated every single day! Much plastic litter such as wrappers, plastic bottles and chip forks get washed into the drains, down to the river and end up in the sea. Bewdley is surprisingly quite litter free thanks to the hard work of the volunteer “PickUp Artists”.Volunteers from Transition Bewdley joined the “Pickup Artists” after the Cherry Fair weekend to pick up and weigh litter. 7.6 Kg of recyclable materials, plastic and glass bottles, cans and paper were collected in just an hour. This was greater than the weight of all the non-recyclable litter. It highlights the need for more of us to recycle and to reduce our consumption of single use plastics such as drink bottles. John Rhymer Transition Bewdley

All Saints’ Church Wribbenhall update As you may be aware All Saints’ church has been partially closed due to an issue with the ceiling. On Monday 12th August All Saints’ Parochial Church Council (PCC) voted to proceed to repair the ceiling to enable the church to be fully reopened as soon as possible. A recent change in the grant application process has given flexibility to submit bids for work on church buildings. The PCC is very grateful for the generous donations already received and for the continuing community support. We are confident that funding will be available to complete the project. Grant applications will need to be completed and therefore we are currently unable to provide a projected date for reopening the church. Until work begins regular Sunday services continue to take place in the open section of the church. Rev Megan Gibbins, Rector On Saturday 14th September All Saints’ church will be open to coincide with the 'RIDE & STRIDE cycle ride, part of the National Heritage weekend. An update will be available on progress of the work to reopen the church. Tea/coffee and cakes will be served. It will also be the official launch of our Grand Christmas Raffle to be drawn on November 17th at the Mercure Hotel, Bewdley. Do come and join us and we will try to answer any questions. Olwen Jahoor, Churchwarden

Bewdley Library After many teething problems Worcestershire Library Service's new computer system is starting to settle down. Whenever there is a new digital changeover there are always gremlins and unforeseen problems. Although there are still issues arising, most of the major disruptions seem to have been sorted. We'd like to thank our customers for being very patient with us, most of whom have been very understanding. Many customers have asked the very reasonable question of why we have changed the system from the old one. The old system provider is no longer supporting the one we had so that if anything went wrong it would then be irreparable. Because of the new system, we have been unable to bring in any new stock over July and August but by the time you read this we should have a large backlog of current titles coming into stock. We will advertise as many of these as we can on our Facebook page and other local social media sites. Finally, September sees our annual Summer Reading Challenge drawing to a close and we are pleased to note that we had more children taking part then the last two years. Thanks to all the children who have volunteered to help with this and we hope to see some of you again next year. Once again, thank you all again for bearing with us. Jonathan Halsall

The Bewdley School We are delighted to announce that The Bewdley School has been nominated to host a British Council Connecting Classroom Conference during the Autumn term 2019. The theme of the International Conference is Global Happiness and particularly the health and wellbeing of young people.Visiting delegates will be coming from a wide range of different countries with rich and diverse backgrounds. We hope that this will be an exciting opportunity for our students to experience different cultures and that the conference will build a unique and fascinating global news story. During the three-day conference, some of our students will be working alongside visiting students from Egypt, South Korea, India, Uganda, Jordan and Palestine to explore the theme of Global Happiness through art, sport, film, and music. During the evening, the visiting students will also meet a wide variety of community groups and visit local museums and places of interest. Students from The Bewdley School have been invited to make visits to the Ugandan, Jordanian and Palestine Embassies in London, and the Ambassadors of Uganda and Palestine will be visiting the conference to meet the visiting children. This is a great honour and we expect to hear from the other ambassadors soon. DRPG is supporting our event, and we would like to extend a big thank to all from the company who have kindly given their time and expertise to help the students and staff organise this event. Barbara Longmore from The Bewdley Civic Society and The Bewdley Rotary Club are also giving their time freely to help in all the arrangements and fundraising. As part of the planning for the conference, we will be raising money to fund places at the conference for some of the disadvantaged children from Uganda, Palestine and Jordan. We would like to invite you to view our crowdfunding page: www.crowdfunder.co.uk /global-happiness-co Becky Newbold Painting and photo by Becky Newbold

Gin and Tea for Save the Children

Graham and Judith Bullock of Kateshill House together with the Bewdley Rock Save the Children Group hosted a Gin and Tea event for over 150 guests. After enjoying a gin on arrival, guests sat down to afternoon tea of savouries and cakes with entertainment provided by Sophie Ritanne. Local auctioneer Chris Smith presided over the auction of items generously donated for the event. A 100 bottle tombola and grand raffle contributed to the magnificent total of £5900 raised for the work of Save the Children in its 100th anniversary year. Thank you to all who contributed to the event in any way. Bewdley Rock Save the Children Group

St Leonard’s churchyard wildflower meadow

After our second year managing part of the churchyard as a wildflower meadow, we have seen a growing diversity of wildflower and pollinator life. Paths through the meadow have enabled people to access the graves they love to tend and the rest of the churchyard has been beautifully looked after by Ed Cameron of Tree and Garden Services. Thank you Ed for your hard work and care, and your personal and sensitive attention to the many visitors whom you so kindly help. On a wet, wet Saturday, a gallant group of volunteers, pictured here, raked and collected the hay, and delivered it to the appreciative cattle at Uncllys Farm. This was all made possible by the hard work of the Community Payback team, who went well beyond the call of duty to strim and gather the meadow for us. Thank you team - we have been most grateful of your work in the churchyard through the summer. You have made a real contribution to its beauty, it’s comfort to visitors and the success of our environmental project. We are still in the running for the Best Kept Churchyard award for Worcestershire judging any day now! Caroline Hall

Bewdley Rowing Club At the end of July, rowers from 24 visiting clubs across the country descended upon Bewdley to compete in the Rowing Club’s Annual Regatta. Over 400 entries over the two days competed along the 800m and 600m course on the beautiful River Severn. The event is a wonderful opportunity to see all rowing disciplines, from sweep oar and sculling events, old and young participants, men, women and mixed crews competing, including the exhilarating 200m splash and dash sprint eights, sponsored by the Mug House. And it wouldn’t be our annual regatta weekend without a little rain, but despite the almost constant drizzle on the Saturday, we saw some excellent racing across all disciplines and all ages. Bewdley rowers excelled on home soil (or should that be water?), tying joint first with Worcester RC for numbers of races won. Thanks to all our spectators for cheering on the races, our generous sponsors for making the event possible, our club members for making it happen, and to our visiting clubs for their competitive spirit and supporting the club and local businesses during their stay. Become a member: We always welcome new members of all ages and abilities to the club, whether you have rowed before or never been in a boat. Earlier in the year, our annual (end of May or beginning of June) pub and club event pulled in the crowds, to support the 40-plus crews, many of whom had no or little rowing experience, to compete against each other in the fun event. Fancy dress has increasingly become a staple at the event…who knew you could row in a storm trooper costume and have Darth Vader as your cox! Many of our current club members, who have competed, and won, at regional, national and international regattas and championships, were introduced to rowing through this fun event. Put the date in your diary now for June 2020, and come and have a go. Furthermore, if you are new to rowing, and want to learn, we run regular Learn to Row courses and Taster Days between April to September, to introduce people to this fantastic sport. If you’re not sure whether you want to learn, our Taster Days could help you decide if it’s for you. Trying a new sport can be daunting so our aim is to make it an enjoyable learning experience. In 2019, we have put more than 30 people through these courses; 2020 dates will be published on our website. For more information follow us on social media, visit our website www.bewdleyrc.co.uk or for all rowing, sponsorship or general enquiries please email captain@bewdleyrc.co.uk.

Wyre Forest Scottish Country Dance Club If you fancy starting a new hobby or reviving an old one, our club begins again after the summer break on September 3rd. We meet on Tuesdays, starting at 7:30pm with a warm up and then move on to practising some dances. We have a break about halfway through the session for hot or cold drinks and a chat. We are a relaxed, informal and sociable group. Our current members range in age from being in their thirties to their eighties; some have been dancing for only a matter of months whilst others have many years of experience. Some members are able to attend every week; other people only come when they can fit it in. Complete beginners are welcome and you don’t need to bring a partner. Wear comfortable clothes and soft, flat shoes to dance in.Your first session is free and then it’s only £2 per class. We meet at Wribbenhall Parish Room on Tuesdays from 7:30pm ‘til 9:30pm. Scottish Country Dancing is good exercise and great fun, so why not give it a try? Contact Julie for more information on 01299 405272 or just come along on September 3rd.

Soroptimist International Kidderminster & District Our visit to Himley Hall took place on the 18 July. Himley Hall, once one of the homes of the Earls of Dudley, stands in 180 acres of parkland designed by Capability Brown. It is now owned by the Borough of Dudley and has a series of tastefully redecorated rooms which can be hired for weddings, parties and conferences. Of particular note is the Cinema Room which is decorated in the art deco style. Although guided tours of the house are only available to pre-booked parties there is a super Coffee Lounge which is open every day during the school holidays. There is also plenty of space for a picnic in the lovely grounds. Our next supper meeting will be on the 19 September, 7.30 p.m. at La Brasserie, Kidderminster and our speaker for the evening will be Kate Spohrer from Transition Kidderminster. Visitors are always welcome at our meetings! A Bewdley Festival Event 4th - 5th October Bewdley Festival presents a weekend of themed events centred around the award-winning, starstudded music documentary series American Epic. The weekend will see Bewdley transformed into Main Street USA, featuring film screenings, Q&A sessions, live music, street artists and much more. This special event celebrates the landmark music documentary series ‘American Epic’ from British filmmakers Bernard MacMahon and Allison McGourty and narrated by Robert Redford. The weekend includes a screening of the award-winning trilogy of documentary films about the first recordings of rural music in the U.S.A. and their cultural, social and technological impact on the world. Described by the Hollywood Reporter as ‘a feast of musical and educational riches,’ the film was declared by The Observer as ‘one of the most interesting music programmes ever broadcast and a gorgeous history lesson’. Filmmaker Allison McGourty will be in attendance, leading a linked educational programme with local schools and taking part in a discussion about the trilogy. On Saturday, October 5th in the true spirit of American Epic, Bewdley will become Main Street USA, ringing to the sounds of the Bewdley Marching band as it leads a parade of American Classic cars. There will be a feature children’s film at 10.30 in St George’s Hall, street performers, the American Soup Trail, Ukelele Bands, Bewdley Concert Band, and local musicians performing American music whilst American themed food is being served by the local pubs and cafes. Organisers hope local shops will join in the theme and be decorated with Festival and American bunting. The curated weekend, taking place in St George’s Hall, will present audiences with a line-up of events including Q&A sessions with the film’s producer Allison McGourty, hosted by a celebrity guest interviewer, lectures on sound recording from world renowned music producers, including three times Grammy winner Andrew Scheps, and an exhibition of rare photographs of the ground breaking musicians and equipment. Leading Nashville-based singer songwriter Rod Picott will close the celebrations when he plays live at the popular ‘Music in the Hall’ session on Saturday, 5th October. The films take us back to the 1920s, when record companies went in search of new styles and markets and sought out regional musicians, from the streets of Memphis to the Western prairies and the islands of Hawaii. Using recent interviews, early recordings, and a wide range of period film, photographs, and documents, many of them previously unknown or unpublished, ‘American Epic’ explores the varied sources and extensive impact of this explosion of American popular culture. “Early Bird” Tickets are available for the entire curated American Epic weekend at £25. There are a strictly limited number of tickets available in order to meet capacity at St George’s Hall. Full details and ticket arrangements are available on-line at www.bewdleyfestival.org.uk.
