April in the Forest
The three years of Grow With Wyre have finally come to an end. The partnership between the Forestry Commission, Natural England, local authorities, conservation charities, local organisations and landowners has achieved a great deal for the landscape, wildlife and communities of the area. (See information on separate page.) This month we will be finishing the Sensory Trail around the Discovery Centre. Using native plants and sculptures inspired by Wyre’s wildlife, people can enjoy the sounds, smells, colours and textures of the natural world. There is a story telling circle, a giant xylophone, a squirrel assault course and a clearing where you make an Andy Goldsworthy-style “Celtic Circle”. As all these features are easily accessible, they can really enhance the value of a visit for anybody with a sensory or mobility impairment.

Easter Holidays Tuesday 3rd April - Open Day (Free) Come and explore the Community Discovery Centre anytime between 11am and 3pm. Follow several different trails around the centre, and enjoy the many different art works both inside and out. The new Wildside of Wyre Museum will also be open. There will be a children’s activity available, for a small charge. Good Friday 6th April - Easter Egg Hunt Follow a trail to earn a chocolate reward! There will be a 2 trails, one for younger and one for older children. Start anytime between 10am and 2pm. Cost £3.50 per child. Tuesday 10th April - Mud Monsters! 10.30am – 12 midday. Come and enjoy creating your own monster with mud from the stream. Wear wellies and be prepared to get dirty! Booking required on 01299 266929. Cost £5 per child. It is free and delivered by volunteers to more than 4,600 homes every month
A few friends and I used to play a rather naughty game when we were in a tea shop or restaurant. If the place was full-ish and neighbouring tables were occupied, we would raise our voices slightly and say things like,“..and his blood was splattered halfway up the wall!”, or “Mind you, with behaviour like that no wonder he got such a long sentence”. You could guarantee a noticeable hush from adjacent tables. Conversation (of a rather more sensible sort) is incredibly important to us human animals. What pleasure these small exchanges bring, and how much we miss them when circumstances mean we have to forgo them. How sad that daily we read that the elderly and housebound can go days on end without small human interactions of this kind. I would hope that in Bewdley we don’t have this problem, because we all talk to our neighbours. I know that friends often say that “popping down to the town” didn’t take the twenty minutes they allowed, but something nearer an hour because they exchanged a few words with so many acquaintances. I know that St Anne’s has a pastoral group who visit those who can’t easily get out, and I’m pretty sure there are other setups like this, as well as countless neighbourly kindnesses that happen every day. Sociologists can point to the absence of these sorts of networks as being indicators of dysfunctional societies. So I’m glad that I can recommend a Bewdley trip down town for an impromptu social occasion; as long, that is, as you aren’t in a hurry. I’ve got half an hour now I’ve written this. I can feel a need for a tin of tomatoes coming on. Margaret

WE DID IT! It took just an hour and a half for 5 of us to clear the riverside path between the bridge and the Bewdley School on 3rd March (two hours if you include the cup of tea at the Merchant’s Tea Rooms). Just a few points: There were 10 bags of assorted rubbish collected, of which 5 bags were recyclables. A lot of the rubbish was very old, so the rate of accumulation may not be as fast as it would first seem. We couldn’t (and wouldn’t want to) collect bags of dog poo flung into the undergrowth. If you’d like to hear my opinion on people who do this, give me a call. …and it was easy It was no problem to arrange loan of equipment from Wyre Forest District Council (Green Street depot). Just call Mark Brown or Christopher Phillips of the Environmental Maintenance Team via the Worcestershire HUB on 01562 732928. They will also have the bags of rubbish taken away at the end. HELP EVERY CHILD TO HAVE A GOOD CHILDHOOD
When we see a sullen adolescent lad lurking on our street corner in a hoodie, or a mouthy young teenage girl who gets into a car with older men we are likely to watch our purses, cross the street and mutter about youth who are ‘out of control’. Why should we care about kids like this? But what if the teenager on the corner is someone in urgent need of help? The scandal is that every 5 minutes in this country, a child under 16 runs away from home. They are unhappy and feel unsafe and unwanted. Often they are fleeing neglect, conflict or actual abuse at home. A shocking proportion (1 in 4) are forced onto the streets by their parents or carers, so they will probably not even be reported missing to the police. This leaves young teenagers who run away (sometimes as young as 8) in real danger of exploitation, crime or exposure to drugs and alcohol. Here is how you can help today! By working with people in the local community you can help to raise important funds for The Children’s Society through fundraising activities and events. CHANGES AT BEWDLEY MEDICAL CENTRE
We are about to make some changes over the coming weeks to the reception and waiting room area at the medical centre. The reason for this is the lack of room space for Doctors and clinicians. In order to improve and increase the services we offer our patients we have re-located the repeat prescription ordering desk into the main reception just inside the front entrance. Here you will be able to re-order your medication over the counter or drop your request into the green box on the wall next to the counter. We would like to remind patients that in addition to visiting the surgery to re-order your medication you can also either post your request (we can post back if you enclose selfaddressed envelope), order over the internet (registration required – see bottom of your repeat ordering slip or visit https://bewdleymedicalcentre.appointments-online.co.uk to register) or by telephoning the surgery. The opening times for repeat prescriptions are changing slightly; they will be Monday – Friday 9am–12pm and 2pm-4pm. All other general enquires, eg results of tests, collecting prescriptions/letters will be dealt with at the main desk located in the waiting room. Then we can use the prescription office as an extra consulting room. These alterations will also give us the opportunity to give a much needed “make over” to both the reception area and the waiting room. Finally we are looking at updating our telephone system, which should deliver a quicker and more efficient service to all our patients. The Doctors and staff would like to thank all their patients for bearing with us during these changes and we will endeavour to implement them with as little disruption as possible.

The Grow With Wyre Landscape Partnership scheme has run for 3 years in the Wyre Forest and is now complete! We’ve worked with local people and together planted or restored 40 orchards, planted 19.5km of hedges, surveyed 200 ancient trees, enabled many hectares of woodland to be managed, run training courses on all aspects of orchard and woodland management, employed and trained 5 apprentices, taught 9 local schools about woodlands, enabled over 100 ha of local meadows to be grazed, created a wildlife museum in the forest, restored the habitat of the rare pearl bordered fritillaries in the forest, build a new community discovery centre, with sensory trail and sculptures for people to visit, set up a biological recording centre, mapped the history of the forest and surrounding landscape using LiDAR, restored two old water mills in the forest; Knowles Mill and Coopers Mill, installed 6 woodchip boilers in the local area, created a chip store in the forest to support the wood fuel market, taught local people about sustainable energy and local food, funded a monthly farmers market for local producers and a bus service to the forest, provided grants to local groups to enable them to visit the forest and take part in activities in the woods, provided opportunities and training to hundreds of volunteers, supported 6 student research programmes and restored 6 new trails through the forest and the surrounding area. Spring seems to be putting forth its first tentative shoots and I am pleased to report that I am once again able to find some of patches of sun in which to have my many daily cat naps. With Easter just around the corner I would like to caution all the dog owners out there to keep their chocolates out of reach of any canine friends. Chocolate can be very toxic to dogs and as they are often not as discerning as us cats, they will sometimes eat their humans chocolates at this time of year.
If you are worried that your dog may have managed to get into some chocolate then always contact your vet straight away for advice. My vet has been talking to me about my regular flea treatment this month. Apparently, even though I am an indoor cat, I still have to be treated each month as fleas can get in to my home on other animals and even by hitching a ride on my humans clothes from when they go outside. I have listened to what they have to say and have agreed that I will put up with having the treatment applied as it helps to keep me healthy and itch free. Dear Bridge I’ve reported a few times the amount of litter on the B4196 Switchback road by the Bewdley flyover bridge. It would take only a few hours to clean up the road. Also would you think it would be a good idea to have a Spring clean up around Bewdley with an encouragement to shop owners and home owners to maybe put a lick of paint here and there, and maybe a Bewdley in Bloom competition? Dear Editor, Thank you for allowing me to be a contributor from time to time even though I shall be leaving Beau Lieu to begin a new life in Southern Ireland. Perhaps I can send tales of a Bewdley woman and her adventures in the land of the shamrock! Leaving the town where I was born and bred is always difficult, even though I’ve left and returned many times. I’m making the most of the wonderful Spring weather and taking in the thriving bird life on the river before I leave. Today a mystery was finally solved concerning the English geese that like to take over the riverbank on Severn Side North opposite where the bandstand used to be. Everyone knows that geese can be aggressive and they certainly frightened me as a child. I did think that it was perhaps something to do with nesting that they came ashore. Today, as I came home from the Post Office, a couple were feeding the geese copious amount of bread on the path. They were proud to tell me they came twice a week to feed the geese. It’s a shame they don’t linger and see how many adults and children are afraid to use the path after they’ve gone home. Alex Austin

A MONTH IN THE LIFE OF LIVE WYRES
Sometimes being on your own isn’t all fun. I decided I would like to do something that wasn’t a dating agency so I joined Live Wyres, a social singles group based in Wyre Forest. The following describes a typical month of activities. In June we have the Scrabble Club on the first Friday. We don’t meet to win, but to socialise. Other members will be down the Queen’s Head, watching a live band. On Sunday 3rd June a coach trip leaves for London to be part of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, to see a flotilla of 1,000 boats go down the Thames. Other members will be joining Bewdley Footpaths walking round Bewdley instead. Every Tuesday is Pub Night. First Contacts sit with new people, showing them the ropes and hoping they will stay. The committee will be discussing the Autumn Ball and tickets for the Reunion Dance in September are being sold. Some members also take Ceroc lessons on a

Following a short winter break, Bewdley’s popular local produce market is now open for business again in Load Street. Holding the Sunday market in its traditional location has been well received by local people and visitors alike, bringing added interest and vibrancy to the town centre. The main focus remains on quality food from local producers, with a number of local craft stalls also proving popular. “ We have had a good response from stallholders wanting to sign up again this year”

In support of this aim, a series of training days in Smallholding and other Rural Skills is running in 2012, and these are open to people in Bewdley and the surrounding rural areas of Worcestershire. Dawn lets us in to what goes on in the Kemp Hospice shop
“Morning Jane …how are the horses?” “All fine. We’ve got a show tomorrow, 80 people coming and I have to do packed lunches for them all.” “Oh, Jane; that’s typical of you, a farmers wife through and through - feeding the hungry masses! Enter a customer. “Morning, Barb. How are you?” “Very well thanks, Dawn. (She picks up a shoe and I know what’s coming next)….”Have you got this in a size 6? I go over and whisper in her ear (something rude I have to admit but we play the same joke regularly). In next is a lady who does not enjoy the best of health but is always cheerful and is a great supporter of Kemp. We nursed her Mum at the Hospice and every year on her Mum’s birthday she comes down to spend a sum of money in our shop as per her Mother’s instructions. A little later Ken the Camera Man arrives with his wife; now he is the extrovert of the couple. She prefers to stand back and watch. He even got one of our volunteers up on the shop floor to do the jive at 10 o’clock on a Friday morning;…Val is still recovering! And to think you thought that we just made tea or coffee here all day. Well, be sure to read next month’s copy for Act II. You might just find that you are featured! If you are passing do call in for a browse. You will receive a very warm welcome and we should be only too pleased to help you find a bargain! .......and thank you for continuing to support your local Hospice!

Choral Evensong
he service of Choral Evensong has been sung in churches and for centuries, using the memorable, dignified words of the Book of Common Prayer. This summer the lovely country church of St Leonard’s, Ribbesford is the setting for a celebration of this rich tradition. This impressive Church has a long history of being a place of prayer. Its traditional English Parish Church appearance and the countryside that surrounds it make it a popular place for worship throughout the year. There will be services on the second Sunday of each month sung by choirs from Birmingham, Gloucester and the Wyre Forest, starting on Sunday May13th. Each service will begin at 4.30pm, last for about forty minutes and will be followed by refreshments afterwards. Why not come and experience the peace and beauty of Evensong for yourself? For readers who haven’t yet seen St Leonard’s, the original church for Bewdley, it is well worth a visit. Go down the High Street and keep going until just after the bypass bridge. There is an avenue of horse chestnut trees and church is at the end. There is free parking adjacent to the churchyard. “Every day is different”
An Interview with Bishop John Inge, Bishop of Worcester
At the end of March Chris Salter was given an exclusive interview with Bishop John when he came to visit Bewdley. Here is his report. he question of “What does a bishop a do?” is certainly something I couldn’t have answered before last Tuesday. I was fortunate to meet Bishop John of Worcester in Bewdley last month for an interview for the Bridge.
Did you know Bishop John travels to the Capital most weeks, gets up at 7am every day and prays before breakfast in the cathedral?

Bishop John describes his job as “varied and inspirational”, with “No two days being the same”. Bishop John told me: “I suppose my job wouldn’t appeal to those who didn’t know what it really included. I love meeting new people, seeing new things and helping people in a diverse range of situations”. Bishop John used to be a chemistry teacher in Kent, describing his choice of career as “important, but not as important as the church” as he later discovered. As a child he lived in Kent with his parents, both farmers who encouraged him to go his own way. Now in 2012, Bishop John lives in Worcester with his wife, an American writer, and two daughters. The Bishop talked me through his experience of trying to drive a combine harvester as a child, where he made “wiggly lines” and knew this wasn’t where his passions lay!
Bishop John’s day to day life is massively varied. For example, on Tuesday of a week back in February, he attended a meeting at the Faith and Order commission in London. The following day, he took to the streets of Worcester, collected prayers from the people and took them to the Cathedral where he would pray for each and every one of them.
The Bishop of Worcester also spends time in the hundred or so C of E schools across the diocese, including local high schools such as Wolverley Secondary and St. Catherine’s Primary in Kidderminster. “When I was teaching, I could say what the next day would entail every week, but now, every day is a surprise. I’m also interested in music, architecture and history”, he said.
Bishop John, in the words of our very own Margaret Ashmore, is an “incredibly interesting man”. As somebody who feels that the “Church is getting too much negative press”, it’s comforting to know that there are such compassionate and inspirational people leading the way. Huge thanks to Bishop John for your time!

Bewdley Carnival
All the plans are going ahead for this year’s Bewdley Carnival which will be held on Saturday 16th June 2012. This event is regarded as an unmissable event in Bewdley calendar for the year. The main event of this year’s Carnival is: Joseph Peace and his Fire Stunt Spectacular. Also in the entertainment programme will be local bands, vintage cars, fancy dress, a fun fair and many stalls.

by Joe Turner On the 28 February Bewdley had a league match against Wednesfield. Bewdley started the game off barely getting a shot on target. Grant Morris had to pull off a good save in the first ten minutes. Wednesfield scored the opening goal with a penalty. The second goal towards the end of the first half was a speculative shot that hit Dan Jones on the way in. In the second half Bewdley were much better, but still could not get the ball in the net. Wednesfield scored their third with a long range shot from Scott who caught Morris off his line and dipped over him to find the back of the net to make the score line Bewdley 0-3 Wednesfield. th

For example, the conductor may call “6 after 7” so that we change from ringing 12345678 to 12345768 (C B A G F E D C for the musical). This is repeated until the conductor shouts another instruction eg “4 after 5”, when we change from 12345768 to 12354768 or from C B A G F E D C to C B A F G E D C, which we then ring until further instructions are given. The length of time between such instructions depends on the skill of the ringers (and how easy the bells are to ring!). So a typical sequence of changes would be: 12345678 6 after 7 12354768 4 after 7 13257468 2 after 5 12345768 4 after 5 12357468 2 after 3 13527468 2 after 7 13572468 This final change (known as “Queens”) is considered particularly musical, and we usually pause at this point to savour it! The Rotary River Walk
We live on the banks of the beautiful River Severn. Have you ever wondered where it starts and where it ends and the countryside through which it flows? In 2010 the Rotary Club of Stourport-onSevern organised a relay walk of the Severn Way. This year they are joining the Rotary Club of Bewdley in organising the walk of the Severn Way in September. The Bridgnorth to Bewdley stage will be on Friday 14th September and the following day the walk will take us to Worcester. The objective is to raise money for charity, not only the charities we are supporting but providing you an opportunity to raise money for your charity, club or organisation. You can walk from 3 miles to 225 miles. We have speaking to a number of supporters of local charities, clubs and organisations including Scout groups, Bewdley Concert band and Sports clubs who plan to join us. Some of the charities we will be supporting are Shelterbox, Macmillan Cancer Support, the Bewdley Youth café, the Elizabeth Mills day centre, Kemp and Acorns Hospices. GUIDE DOG WALKING UPDATE
I have recently met a couple of people who say they feel sorry for Guide Dogs. Their perception is that the dog wears its harness most of the time and is ‘stuck’ in the house. The owners I have met certainly do not care for their dogs in this way. Dogs were bred to work. Dogs want to please. Dogs love treats, either edible or a toy. No working dog would ‘work’, despite its training, if unhappy. Guide Dogs are well fed; their health is of paramount importance; they are ‘wanted’ by their owners (some of whom wait a long time for the right match) and are both loved and valued. The association continues to support the owner through the dog’s working life and ensures the dog’s well-being. Owners will free-run their dog regularly and often the dog will be in a family environment, meeting people of all ages and other dogs. I hope this clears up a common misconception. Happily Pippin continues to make good progress. It did take a long time to get into a routine. She walks well on lead; her recall is good and apart from sneaking onto the settee occasionally is ticking the boxes. The 2nd Bewdley Brownies are having a tombola to raise money for Guide Dogs at the end of March, and a street collection will take place in July. The President was pleased to welcome members and visitors. We are grateful to receive a small legacy from a past member, Freda Young. Members were asked to make suggestions on how to spend the money as a fitting memorial to her. We were given a talk entitled The Cake and Ale Trail by Bob Bibby. He started his series of walks in Great Malvern, visiting many good pubs for lunch and real ale then walked again until tea time when he ate at excellent cafes. As the routes were well known to us all we walked with him in our imagination. On April 16th Kimberlley Bennett will give a cake decorating demonstration. BEWDLEY LIBRARY There’s nothing like having a go at a craft you have never tried and producing something recognisable. I remember the scarf I knitted from a kit bought at a craft shop. Not just an elongated rectangle, it also had a slit included so that you could fasten it securely. I wore it with pride. Sadly my next attempt at knitting (a modest tank top) didn’t get past the casting on stage, and was hurled across the room several times before I donated the wool to a friend who could both knit and count to seventy five accurately. I have stuck with cross stitch for a few years now, and am currently working on a wedding sampler for a friend who remarried recently. I’m hoping he’s still married when I finish it. In response to a recent Adult Learning survey we carried out, customers indicated that they would be interested in art and craft courses. We’re therefore organising a six week ‘Introduction to Craft‘ course, which will enable you to have a go at activities such as printing, card making and producing gift bags and small household items by recycling everyday materials. A short course (fee required) could mean a whole new world opening up for you; we are always keen to try new things at the library, so let’s make this happen. Celebrating 25 years of Bewdley Festival
To recognise and celebrate Bewdley Festival‘s 25th Anniversary, the Festival Trustees are commissioning a piece of Public Art to be installed in Jubilee Gardens as a gift to the Town. There will be a competition whereby a limited shortlist of artists will be asked to submit their proposals for consideration. The Festival’s Chairman Roger Key explained that the aim is to create a distinctive contemporary art work that embraces the theme of ‘family, community and the arts’, which will provide a welcoming and attractive feature that complements its surroundings and becomes a focal point for local people and visitors to enjoy. On Monday 27th February more than fifty people attended Wribbenhall Community Centre to hear Sarah Lange outline her recommendations for the Millennium Green, following her month-long survey of local opinion. The meeting included local residents, representatives from the Town Council and County Council, and members of Transition Bewdley Land Group. A survey of 212 local households showed 37% of respondents willing to help towards the upkeep of the Green. The most popular idea for making the Green more attractive was growing more flowers, followed by the provision of more benches. he report that Sarah presented was based on the questionnaire results and recommended: establishing raised beds along the empty fence line, together with an ‘adopt a bed’ scheme whereby local households could plant up and maintain their own raised bed; replacing the bottom bench; putting two to six large tree trunks both to act as seats and for small children to climb on; planting a sensory trail of scented and textured plants; forming a litter picking team; planting more fruit and nut trees; building a ‘bug hotel’ to encourage beneficial insects. Local volunteers are being sought for a formal planning group of four to six people, together with a more informal working group of residents willing to adopt a raised bed, pick litter, and plant and prune trees. TOWN COUNCIL NEWS TOWN COUNCIL MEETING HELD ON 5TH MARCH 2012 Grants to Local Community Organisations Councillors agreed to make a number of grants (from an increased budget provision) to local organisations including Community Transport Helpline, Citizens’ Advice Bureau, Bewdley Carnival, Bewdley In Bloom, Bewdley Youth Café and others, all of whom do a great deal of voluntary work for the community. It was also agreed to retain a small balance to cover any further applications which might be made in the summer and autumn. Working with Wyre Forest District Council The Leader and the Chief Executive of the District Council gave a presentation to the Councillors as to the opportunity that now existed for certain duties and functions to be transferred to the Town Council. This was in the spirit of the localism agenda which encouraged local communities to take on responsibility for local services. It was agreed the best way forward was to arrange a public meeting later in the year to get the views of local people as to what they felt should be a priority for any transfer and at what cost. Road Humps Queensway Estate Councillors heard from members of the public who wished to challenge the legality of the speed humps on the Queensway Estate not least because the effect of vehicles going over them was causing damage to the Riddings Brook culvert which ran close to Queensway and also damage to vehicles including buses. The Town Clerk is to take up the issue with the local County Councillor. Bewdley Medical Centre Concern was expressed by Councillors at the news as to the possible relocation of the Medical Centre to Wribbenhall next to All Saints Church. The adverse effect on footfall and trade in the town centre was a serious matter which the Town Council would strenuously wish to avoid. Future Town Council meetings held at The Guildhall on Mondays (except where indicated) at 7.30pm are: 2nd April, 8th May (Tuesday), 6th June (Wednesday) and 2nd July. The Annual Town Meeting (open to all residents on the electoral roll) will take place on Monday 23rd April at 7.00pm. The Annual Meeting of the Town Council (when the new Mayor is elected) will take place on Friday 11th May at 7.00pm Minutes of Town Council and Planning Committee Meetings are posted on the Notice Boards outside the Mayor’s Parlour, in the Guildhall Entrance and Load Street Car Park.
