It’s here! It’s really here! Yes, Spring has arrived, and I know because I’ve seen the first teenage pair of bare legs and sandals. The next sign is a pair of middle-aged bare legs, but that’s a way off yet.
As you can see from our photos, here at The Bridge we are grinning all over our collective faces at having received a Civic Award. I was very pleased to receive it on behalf of the team on The Bridge, and also on behalf of Mentorlink, with whom I also work, at the ceremony in March. It was serendipitous that Pete Johnson, who was responsible for starting The Bridge back in the 1960’s was also receiving an award for his work in Scouting. The third recipient was Jo Bloom who did so much for the flooded people of Wribbenhall. A great occasion for us all.
Also in this edition are photos of other civic occasions: the West Mercians came to the town on March 11th and paraded their mascot to a large crowd. Gary has given us some bird’s eye views of this from a vantage point on top of St Anne’s tower (I can vouch for the cold wind and long, long climb to get the photos) plus a couple that Jim Collins kindly emailed to us. Also in this edition is a new four page insert encouraging us to support the traders on our doorstep. Some of you may be involved with the new Bewdley Business Partnership (details inside) which is also looking to keep our town alive and busy. This is an important initiative for all of us who have the good of Bewdley at heart, and reminds us that what we value is worth working for.

Working together for a prosperous Bewdley
Thanks to a new partnership, traders, businesses, local attractions and community groups in Bewdley are coming together to promote the town. Bewdley Business Partnership aims to put the town on the map in terms of tourism, generating increased levels of business and supporting both existing and new businesses. Anyone who has a passion for the town is welcome to come along and get involved. Already two public meetings have been held with well over 60 people attending. There has been open discussion on what Bewdley would be like as a prosperous market town and how it can get there. Although it is very early days, a number of local people have come forward to join the first three working groups that are looking at tourism, marketing of the town and how existing and new businesses can be supported. “It is good to see so many people, including our town and district councils coming together to help work in creating a prosperous Bewdley” said Peter Miller of Bewdley Development Trust which is coordinating the forming of the partnership. “We would like to see more organisations and individuals so that every sector of the town is represented. It costs nothing, apart from your time, to come along and see how you can play your part in putting Bewdley well and truly on the map. This is not a talking shop – it’s a new way that everyone can help promote our town.” The next meeting is at 6pm on the 20th April in the Guildhall, Bewdley. In 1621 1s 3d was paid for "a casement" by the pulpit including hinges and mending the glass and in 1629 John Hill, joiner, received 1s 8d for two casements. There are also several payments for mending the glass of the chapel. This was frequently done with strips of lead, lead being then much cheaper than glass. But in 1649 we read that William Cleark was paid 1s 8d for 5ft of glass and 2s 10d for the school and chapel. The roof also needed attention. This was made of shingles (wooden tiles) which cost 8d for 28lbs in 1622. In 1627 Mr.Milton received 1s 3d for half a hundred weight (56 lbs) just a penny less than the double the price for double the amount (2s 6d per hundredweight). But in 1657 they were able to purchase 4 hundredweight at 1s 91/2d per hundredweight to use on the houses next to the chapel, the chapel itself and the courthouse. After this no more shingles seem to have been needed until 1661 when 8 hundredweight were bought again at 3s 4d per hundredweight. The gutters needed attention from time to time. Some of these were of wood. In 1639 11yds 2ft of rail to make a new gutter cost 2s, nails 2d and pitch, to pitch it 2d, although in 1632 they paid Joe Clark £1 5s for lead for a gutter and 3s 10d for soldering leads on the steeple. In 1604 the chapel was painted and cleaned at a cost of 2s 6d and white limed at 8s. (From 'Bewdley's Ancient Church Accounts'. Researched by Mrs.Ann Marshall)

Last October Wyre Forest District Council Civil Enforcement Officers started enforcing a maximum stay of 23-hours in the Dog Lane and Gardner’s Meadow car parks (and presumably elsewhere across the District). The regulation is tucked away in the Schedule of car parking charges attached to the 40-page WFDC (Off-Street Parking Places) (Consolidation) Order, but hadn’t been enforced before. Early Bewdley
On 25th February, St. George's Hall was packed, with standing room only. People had flocked in to hear a talk about Bewdley's early history, hosted by the Bewdley Civic Society. I have just completed a degree at the University of Leicester and one of my projects was on a small medieval town. I chose Bewdley,
but what I found surprised me. I have pushed its origins further back than anyone else has ever suggested. My findings are set out in "Bewdley, The early years", which is on sale from Bewdley Books or from me (23 Stourport Road, tel:400691) for £6.50. I have also put a copy in the Library. Heather Flack

A Bewdley Mystery
Alice McCay, now 89, was born in Dog Lane, the daughter of Tom and Alice Bennett. She writes about a family tragedy, which occurred 80 years ago. Tom & Alice Bennett
It was on Sunday, the 2nd of November 1930, a cold windy day and there were hundreds of fishermen, in a competition, on both sides of the river. It was very windy and the current was strong.
I went to church with Elsie and left our young brother playing. He was dressed in navy short trousers, a pullover and a knitted hat. At dinner time we were called in but Ron didn’t come. When Dad came home he wanted to know where he was. The time was about 2.25. The lads had gone chestnutting over the railway bridge and I went to chapel with Elsie. When we came out he was still missing and people turned out to look for him.

He was just 6, not old enough to go anywhere on his own. He didn’t like chapel so we thought he might be hiding, or he might have followed the lads, but when they got back at 4 Ron aged 6 o’clock they said he hadn’t been with them and no one had seen him.
The river was very high but not in flood so the nets were put down at Bristol, but nothing was found. They searched everywhere – along the river, the brook and ponds. There were over a hundred searching for him, scouts and guides, and not just people from Bewdley, but there was no sign of him.
The fishermen were questioned but swore they had not seen him. There were lots of gypsies in Bewdley for some kind of celebration. They were questioned and also made their own enquiries but nothing was discovered.
It was a complete disappearance and he was never seen again from that day to this. What happened to him? Did he somehow fall in the river? I don’t think so. If he followed the lads, did he get lost in Aymer Woods? Who knows what happened to him but I would like to know.
Jumble sale - thank you

April in the Forest
At last the new Gateway to Wyre Centre is open for business! The Discovery Centre team have been busy putting up displays of natural objects, craft items and information to animate the two forest classrooms. Environmentally-friendly aspects of the building, such as rainwater harvesting and the wood chip boiler, are featured on lively banners and form the subject of a trail around the site. Over the next few months the surrounding landscape will be restored to include a sensory trail, a woodland edge of native shrubs and small trees, fruit trees, wildflower meadow, and ponds. The winter may have been exceptionally cold but there has been a lot of activity to restore landscapes. About 7km of mixed wildlife-friendly hedges have been restored or planted and fruit trees have been planted in old orchards along the Dowles Brook. Areas of scrub have been cut and raked off at the Roxel site (Kinlet) to create good habitat for the Grizzled Skipper butterfly and the invading rhododendron has been pushed back in several areas of the forest.Volunteers have been involved in all these projects; people who get a buzz out of being out of doors and making the countryside better for humans and wildlife. Glamorous Life of an Opera Singer Part 2
Last time I said I would tell you the story of a friend of mine back in his student days. He was on tour in Europe with his (world famous) choir. He had solos to sing, and for one reason or another, possibly involving excess units of alcohol, his singing had not been as good as usual. On the train to the next city, the choir-master took him aside and generally told him to pull his socks up. He took the hint and walked the length of the train to find a quiet area with a loo where he could practise a few scales, arpeggii and other pointless vocal 'exercises'. He had been la-la-lah-ing away for quite a while, when in the course of taking a deep breath, he noticed that all had gone quiet and the train was stuck. Eventually he stopped what he was doing and looked out of the loo only to find that the view from the windows was entirely obscured by other carriages and trucks. His carriage had been left in a siding and the rest of the choir had gone on in their portion of the train without him. I'd known this story for many years till I eventually asked if the tale were true. He confirmed it, but added that it wasn't the most embarrassing thing that had ever happened to him. Imagine my joy when Jan Cox, resident of Bewdley, sent me a copy of the January"Bridge" as a keepsake of a memorable weekend. Gordon, Jan's husband and I were at school together nearly 60 years ago and have remained friends ever since, despite many years of non-contact. At The Regatta, Gordon and Jan sponsored a race in my Ma's memory, as a fitting tribute to Joan Frances Jones, nee Mynard, a child of the town and a lovely lady. Many of a certain generation will remember her fondly for her Church activities and as a shoemanageress par-excellance. Imagine my joy when yet another correspondence from Severn Trent Water landed on my door mat, outlining the next phase of work in Bewdley; I am a working Mum who lives one side of the river, whose 7-year old Son goes to school the other side of the river and who works in Kidderminster. Do I risk going through town? Will the lights be in my favour? Do I go via the by-pass? Is everyone else going that way? I leave the house at 8.15am and hope for the best A teenage boy saunters passed consuming a party-size tube of sour cream & chive Pringles,and I ponder whether this is in addition to his breakfast, or indeed instead of. Five minutes pass and I’m hoping we’ll make it across the temporary traffic lights before they change. We don’t, of course and I’m second in the queue for next time. This affords me even more time to observe a teenage girl opening a bag of Cadbury’s giant buttons just purchased from Martin’s – breakfast? early morning snack? Eventually the lights turn to green and I’m off at last. I have lived in my current house in Bewdley for 7 ½ years and dearly love living there. The view of The Severn Valley Railway, sound of the church bells and feeling of belonging to a real community far outweigh what seems to be the never-ending road works. I have vented my frustration now and feel better for it! Don’t get me wrong, this article is written to amuse rather than moan. But all the same – Roll on May! Claire Quinn

In February, Mr Paul McGuire gave an amusing talk about his experiences as a TV 'warm-up' man in the 1950 and 60's, for shows such as The Black and White Minstrels and The Billy Cotton Band Show. The theatre group enjoyed the Rose Theatre's production of 'Teechers' by John Godber.
The next meeting will be on Tuesday April 27th at Wribbenhall Community Centre at 7.30pm when local author Ms C.V. Seymour will talk to the guild about her new book 'Land of Ghost'.

A Fishy Tale Part 2

Last time I told you about the great pike that was supposed to live by Blackstone Rock. My father once went salmon fishing by the rock. I was his boatman and ghillie. Soon good sight of a fresh run silver salmon of 15 pounds or so; an average size in those days, about a yard long. As the fish began to tire, Dad was able to draw him nearer to the boat. “You can net this one into the boat” said Dad. “Take your time, and I will bring him alongside”. Just then the salmon turned on his side revealing his gleaming silver flank. I was just about to reach out with the net when the boat was rocked by a surge of water, like a sea swell. A great greeny-brown head grabbed our salmon crosswise in its jaws. A massive pike! He had an eye as big as a wristwatch and an evil leer on its lip. Both fish submerged in a huge swirl of water. The last we saw of them were the silver head and tail end of our salmon sticking out either side of the behemoth’s jaw. Now we had a new fight on our hands. The hook was still in the salmon’s mouth and the line was intact. The built-cane rod bent right over as Dad piled on the pressure, but the pike was unstoppable. It powered away and dived under the cliff. The terylene line hummed and twanged under the strain. Then we heard and felt the line grating on the underwater rocks. Eventually the line parted, leaving us shaken, robbed and not a little frightened. I never swam in that place again.

At a special Brownie meeting on the 25th February where we celebrated Thinking Day and the history of Guiding over the last 100 years four of our newest Brownies made their promises in front of their parents. They were welcomed into 2nd Bewdley Brownies and the worldwide Guiding family. So how many of you remember standing in front of Brown Owl and saying your promise??? The four new Brownies weren’t the only ones saying their promise. Teresa Shaw joined 2nd Bewdley Teresa Shaw with Libby Bale, Becky Giles, Brownies in September 2008, having not been put off Imogen Roff, and Phoebe Oliver. by camp she offered to help at weekly meetings. After spending a year working towards her Adult Leadership Qualification she was ready to say her Promise….with a bit of help from the Brownies. Whilst working towards her qualification, Teresa helped to organise district and unit events as well as helping to organise activities and games at weekly meetings. Well done Teresa from everyone in Bewdley Girl Guiding. I was very pleased to hear so many positive comments from you regarding last month’s article on our young people. It is good to know that so many of you agreed with our focus and views on the youth of the town and that there is a wide spread appreciation that they really are good kids. You may recall in last months article I promised to tell you more about the Tag Rugby project which is delivered by Local Policing Teams to primary schools.You may be wondering what the Tag Rugby project aims to do. Is it just police being funded to have fun? Well I can answer those questions for you. The aims of the project are to reduce the chances of a child becoming either a victim of crime or an offender. It creates opportunities for us to meet with children in a constructive informal setting to try and build positive relationships as well as enabling us to deliver personal safety messages. Tag Rugby was chosen as it is a non contact and inclusive team sport i.e. no-one is left out; boys or girls. Whilst having fun the pupils develop skills in communication, teamwork, co-operation and personal responsibility. We have three teams in the competition

representing Bewdley & Rural areas, who are competing against schools from across the Wyre Forest District. The first heat will be held at Kidderminster Carolians and the final will be played at Twickenham. I am sure you all will join me in wishing our kids every success in the tournament. Su is a local girl who attended Bewdley High School before joining the RAF. She worked in Local Policing in Cambridgeshire before returning home to Bewdley. I’m sure you will give her the same warm welcome that I was given when I came to Bewdley almost twelve months ago. Time has flown by for me as it has been really busy, challenging yet enjoyable. We’re lucky to have an exhibition room at Bewdley; it’s easily accessible from the main body of the library (no stairs!) and hosts a variety of displays of art work including oil and watercolour painting and traditional and modern photography.
We also host the Bewdley Festival Exhibition and the Cards for Good Causes collection in the lead up to Christmas.
Many of the individual artists and groups displaying their work are local, and Bewdley certainly offers much scope for the creative with its historical buildings, river and easy access to areas of natural beauty.
Now that the days are lengthening most of us feel the urge to go outside and make the most of spring while we can. Whether you feel artistically inspired by any of our exhibitions, are considering a new project in the garden or feeling adventurous in the kitchen, we have books to help you on your way with sections on painting, photography, gardening and cookery.
If you’re feeling very energetic and are determined to keep fit, we also have books that can advise you on exercise and sport activities such as running, football, fishing and swimming. It hasn’t been easy getting in and around Bewdley lately, but it is worth making the effort to come and see us. Apart from anything else, it’ll stop us feeling lonely! Kay Sanderson

As I write it is a cold, bright morning and the thermometer said -2.5oC when I left for the Rowing Club. The puddles were iced over and our boat was still frosted as we lifted it onto the water. The handles of the blades (oars) sucked the warmth from our hands, but after a few hundred metres of firm rowing the feeling returns and the tranquillity of the river in the early morning is more than compensation for chilly fingers! Rowing upstream away from the club the bridge is silhouetted by the low sun, with the water glinting below. The bustle and traffic of the town are distanced by the complaints of the geese; the only other sounds being the clunk of the oars and the gurgle of the water against the bow of the boat. Having reached the ‘top’ (the regatta start, about 750 m from the club) we turned the boat around and were about to row back when an otter swam across the river in front of us. Mesmerised, we watched it until it dived in that characteristic way with its tail curving up and over, just before the far bank. A few days ago three swans took off just in front of us, with their feet paddling the surface of the water as they fought for flight, and only just cleared the tops of our heads; a surprisingly noisy event! So it has been a privileged few days of wildlife spotting on the river…and Spring is nearly here! Melanie Gunn
Old Felt Hats and Food Parcels -Wribbenhall WI Archives I am a member of Wribbenhall Womens’ Institute, and have been researching our archives (before they are placed in safe storage). Our first meeting was held in March 1928 at Spring Grove House, the home of Mrs Harcourt Webb. The meetings were then held at the Parish Rooms and some of the topics of our guest speakers in the 1930’s were ‘The Washing of Eiderdowns’,‘Hat Trimming’ and ‘Items that could be made from Old Felt Hats’. In May 1938 we had a visitor, a Mrs Scott a member of Roxburgh WI, Otago, New Zealand. This visit forged a link with our WI and we received many food parcels during World War Two. A telegram in June 1943 stated, “Link temporarily broken probably owing to loss of a letter by enemy action”. In 1945 a letter from New Zealand and a surprise present of a cake arrived, to be eaten at our Christmas Party in 1945. In June 1950 a letter was read out asking for suggestions for further parcels! The committee of the time felt that Roxburgh WI had given enough as we could buy goods ourselves at the time. A parcel was sent to them with a present for each of their members, expenditure £3-14-6d. Mrs Scott visited us again in 1955 but I don’t know when the link was broken. In March 2009 I emailed the WI in New Zealand to ask if Roxburgh WI was still active. I was delighted the next morning to receive an answer. Since that time we have exchanged letters and photographs which are read out and displayed at our meetings. I wonder if relations or friends of Mrs Scott still live in our area? At Mr Underhill's in Ludlow the courtyard is packed with plants chosen for colour and perfume and culinary use. The large windows of the restaurant make the courtyard seem larger, and you feel you are dining in the garden itself. As you arrive at this Michelin starred restaurant, you are greeted by your name, and as with any good establishment all their customers are VIP's from beginning to end. The day before, your booked reservation is confirmed by Mrs Bradley the owner (with her husband the chef), just to check that the Brill or Mortimer Forest Venison, is to your liking, and if not a change in menus would be catered for. It’s the finer details that gives this restaurant the wow factor. Mr Underhill's has become well known throughout the county, if not the country for its seven course menu. All diners have the same menu, as no-one would ever want to miss a course. From smoked salmon blini, to almond veloute with orange zest oil, the details of quality and service are impeccable. If it’s a table for two or for six all are served simultaneously and the ingredients of every course are detailed in person by your waiter. The duck liver custard is followed by the award wining Fillet of Mortimer Forest Venison served with capers and raisin sauce with sprout chestnuts and pancetta, with Duke of York potato and shallot mash. The wine list is very rich and full just like the wine that comes from the extensive cellars. Before your dessert menu you are offered a cheese sesame oatcake with winter jam and apple cream with caramel jelly; then comes an extensive list of home made desserts that are made personally for you by Mr Bradley and his team. It’s the knowledge of food and the painstaking attitude to detail that make this establishment stand out above the rest.
More News of Arty the Guide Dog
Arty began his basic training programme at Leamington on 17th February. He had spent some time with his trainer, Jenny, in 'assessment', prior to this. As a puppy walker, my job was done, but it was great to hear of his acceptance on the programme and, more recently, that he is now 'in harness'. Dogs in training wear a brown harness; those who have qualified, and are working dogs, a white one. I am now 'walking' Frazzle. She is a golden retriever, born on 17th December, 2009. Frazzle is the ninth puppy of nine - four male, five female. Her breeder described her as 'good looking. strong and independent-minded'. Those of you who
have met her I am sure will agree. Those of you who know her, might agree with me, that she is mischievous, domineering and determined! To have such very different pups has presented new challenges; I will keep you informed! Gabi Wootton. P.S. TOWN COUNCIL MEETING HELD ON 1ST MARCH 2010
Lifebuoys – Severnside North
During February two lifebuoys went missing from along Severnside North. It is believed they were taken as part of an anti-social prank. Their loss has been reported to the Police. Needless to say for safety reasons, they should always be in place and the Council carries out periodic checks. However, aside from the stupidity of misusing them, each replacement costs in excess of £80 – a cost that falls upon the Council Taxpayer. Anyone who sees or learns of wrongful use of lifebuoys please contact the local Police or the Town Council. Bewdley Car Parking Review
The Town Council had a good numbers of responses from local residents to put forward to the District Council’s Scrutiny Review Panel which was due to meet on 31st March to consider evidence of the hardship brought about by the change and/or enforcement of parking regulations for permit and season ticket holders using the Dog Lane and Gardners’ Meadow car parks. We await the outcome with interest. Wyre Hill Play Area
The Council agreed that a letter should be sent to the District Council to voice concerns as to the safety of the play equipment on this important play area.
Carnival Fireworks
The Council agreed again to engage Kimbolton Fireworks to provide a firework display by the riverside on the evening of Friday 11th June as part of the Bewdley Carnival celebrations. Bewdley Regatta
The Mayor reported on his work with the Rowing Club to make this year’s Regatta in July an even more impressive event to attract visitors and business to the Town Future Town Council meetings held at The Guildhall are: 6th April and 4th May both at 7.30pm. Annual Town Meeting is 26th April at 7.30pm Annual Council Meeting (Mayor-Making) 14th May at 7.30pm. Minutes of Town Council and Planning Committee Meetings are on the Notice Boards outside the Mayor’s Parlour, in the Guildhall Entrance and Load Street Car Park. Junior Tennis
Although tennis is played all year, April is the start of the busy Summer season for juniors. There are coaching courses in the Easter holidays, and head coach Tracey's regular weekly squads for mini tennis upwards. Friday evening junior nights (5-7.30pm) have a new with another coach, Cliff, present to give tips and advice to those who come along. He will also organize both fun and competitive games and sessions with our ever popular ball machine. As usual the bar will be open. The charge is £2 charge. Later in the season it is hoped to arrange matches against other clubs, and the interclub age group competitions will take place. Chitting and Potting
By now, although it may still feel too early to plant due to the protracted cold weather your chitted potatoes should be ready as the soil warms. The process of chitting produces on the rounded, blunt end of the potato healthy green shoots that are about an inch to an inch and a half long; this is done in a cool naturally lit area protected from frost. What to do now, is the question, whether to ground- plant in well nourished soil in shallow trenches or to go for the more recent idea of pot planting. There are of course advantages to both. With a container it should be at least a foot deep and about a foot across as a minimum but bigger is better. There needs to be plenty of drainage at the bottom, a good base of broken crock or polystyrene, and then a 1-3 inch layer of good quality soil mixed with garden or potting compost, well rotted manure or an organically based fertiliser. Choose your potato variety, early or main crop and sit them on top of the medium and cover with another 1-3 inches of growing material. Tuber numbers will depend on the size of container and likely crop, as a rule for a dustbin size pot add 5 tubers. As foliage grows keep adding more of the growing mixture until just short of the top of the container pot: the “earthing-up” process. As the season progresses feed, if necessary, water well but don’t let the container dry out or become water logged and then enjoy your produce.

This photograph was given to Bewdley Historical Research Group with the information that it was of Mr Bore, Cherry Picking, Wyre Forest, 1915. It was taken by Charles T. Holland, headmaster of the Birmingham Oratory School. The group would like to trace who Mr Bore was, where he lived and any other information that can be found. There is another photograph with Mr Bore, two other men, a boy and a girl of the same date. If you can help please contact Charles Purcell on 01299 403582. The Research Group began in 1980 and since then have amassed a large amount of material including baptisms, marriages and burials, mostly for Bewdley, Wribbenhall, Ribbesford and Dowles. Crafts Alive
Come to Bewdley Museum on Monday 3rd May to enjoy a day of craft demonstrations and hands-on taster sessions with some of Worcestershire’s most talented craft groups and the museum’s resident craft professionals. Special guests include, Rural response straw craft, The Worcestershire Guild of Weavers, Spinners & Dyers, The Wyre Forest Lace Makers, The Teme Valley Embroiderer's Guild and Sandra Shakespeare, Rag Rug Making. There will be a chance to have a go at many of the crafts including an opportunity to try and throw a clay pot on the potters wheel with help from ceramicists Chris Connor and Nicola Price. Head teacher gets custard pied
Children at Bewdley Primary School had the chance to show their math skills, with the finalists being able to choose who they could custard pie. There were two competitions, both involving doubling numbers, so that everyone could get involved. The custard pie challenge involved children doubling numbers (2,4,8,16..) as far as they could. The key stage winners were Charlie Bailey-Hinks (5), Bronwyn Teasdale (7), Isobel Smith (8), Harry Field (10), Jordon Poolton (10) and Kimberley Moore (11). Paul Roper, head teacher said “It was really impressive to see the skills of so many children. We certainly appear to have some budding mathematicians in our school.” As well as the head teacher being chosen to be custard pied, the winners also chose the teachers Simon Cottrill, Amy Crowther and Valerie Blount.
