This month we start a new series of Bewdley Musings from Neville Farmer:
View from the Redthorne ..... Ludlow has its castle but what draws the crowds today is food. Stow-on-the-Wold is picture-postcard-pretty but the antique shops give it the edge. Bewdley has the river and an unrivalled programme of events but, as a friend asked me the other day, what is its Unique Selling Point from day to day? The other day I spent some time soaking up the art that formed the focus of the Bewdley Open Studios weekend. I was astonished. This was no cobbled-together outpouring of enthusiastic hobbyists. The paintings, drawings, photographs, sculpture and ceramics from over 50 local artists were quite outstanding, diverse and inspirational. Over the weekend at venues around the town it was clear that arts and crafts are flourishing in Bewdley... and not just for one weekend per year. Bewdley is already a centre for arts and crafts but it’s just not shouting it out loudly enough. Let’s turn every empty shop window into an art exhibit! Let’s make the crafts market weekly and bigger! How about the pubs, cafes and restaurant devoting part of the wall space to selling local art? As someone suggested at a meeting recently, let’s turn the old Phipps and Pritchard office into “The Bewdley Shop” selling local arts, crafts and produce. The more people see Bewdley as a focal point for artists and artisans, the more they will come, to the benefit of the whole town. The Bewdley Shop???? Neville Farmer
One down - three to go! The team from Bewdley Baptist Church which is agoing to the Dominican Republic for two weeks to work on a building site for homeless Haitian refugees have raised its first £2,500. This is enough to build one new home and the target is to raise funds for another three. Every single penny that they raise will go towards building the new homes – the team members look after the cost of flights and accommodation themselves. The Bridge is the community voice of Bewdley. It is delivered free monthly to more than 4,600 homes That smell takes me back a bit…… As I walked up the road from town the other day I was transported back to my childhood. I was walking back home from school with my brother in the hot sunshine back in the days when a six year old could safely walk along roads as yet relatively traffic-free. The memory was brought on by the scent of the flowers on a nearby hedge; my way home all those years ago was along suburban roads lined with dark green clipped privet hedges. By July the hedges were spattered with white strong-smelling flowers, and the smell is forever associated in my mind with imminent holidays. Nearby were some little bindweed flowers. We used to fit them over our noses and hold them there with a sharp inhalation. This sometimes had the effect of jamming a bug up one’s nose, but who cared? They smelled delicious. Lawn mowings, lime tree flowers, peony flowers all combine to carry me back to Northamptonshire. I bet I’m not the only one. Come on,‘fess up and tell us what pings your memory. We’ll put together a page next month if we get enough contributions. I was pleased to receive more contributions on another subject altogether this month. My chance remark about Stanley Baldwin, Robert Barbour’s reply and last month’s letter from Stanley Baldwin’s grandson have brought two more very thoughtful contributions. Do keep them coming; it’s good to hear what the town thinks about our famous son of Bewdley and if and how we should remember him. Lastly, thank you to everyone who told me how much they enjoyed the colourful cover last month. I’ve passed the compliments on to Gary, who is usually responsible for our cover pictures and took last month’s - apparently swinging from a lamp post judging by the angle! I hope you enjoy his cover this month too. Margaret Ashmore

August in the forest I thought I would write about something different this month – smells. We often encourage the children who come on school trips to use all their senses to experience the forest and have some entertaining and eye-opening activities to help them do this. That plants have smells at all is quite a shock and there is no shortage of interesting material. This month you should be able to enjoy two of the strongest Wyre Forest smells. First, the good news. Honeysuckle is one of the most fragrant of our wild flowers. Its woody stems twine up obliging trees to capture the sunlight that is in short supply on the forest floor. You may only become aware of the plant when you walk into a pocket of sweet scent as you pass under or near it.The nectar is popular with butterflies, moths and many other insects, and the little dormouse also feeds on the flowers as well as using the easily-shredded bark to weave its nest. Now the bad news. The stinkhorn is a fungus with attitude. It looks and smells quite disgusting. The toadstool appears pushing through the leaf litter looking like a whitish egg covered in gelatinous slime. It has a white stem with a ribbed head covered in dark olive-coloured slime which gives off its unmistakeable smell – pungent and penetrating, similar to rotting meat. The smell attracts flies, which land on the head and pick up the slime on their legs. The toadstool thus achieves its objective as the slime contains tiny spores which the flies will then carry to other suitable growing places. This fungus is quite common so use your nose and track them down!
The Discovery Centre is offering all sorts of activities during the holidays: Living Wild runs from 2nd to 5th August and offers a week of fun and adventure for 11 – 16 year olds with fire-lighting, camp cookery and other bushcraft activities. Friends of Bewdley Museum July was a fantastic month for the Friends of Bewdley Museum. Walking through the museum on the 40’s Weekend with so many volunteers not only dressed in period clothes but really entering into the spirit of things made for a wonderful atmosphere. The museum staff and the Tourist Information team had all dressed up as well, and the air raid shelter was overrun with visitors. It was also particularly exciting to see a lot of the shops taking part as well. It is fantastic the way the town is supported in so many ways by keen volunteers, and it is great to think that we could work together with traders to increase the visitor experience. Our next exhibition is “Who Pays the Ferryman?” which aims to recreate memories from those who remember our local forms of water transport, and to create new memories with the younger generation. There will be opportunities to add your experiences during the exhibition and to
take part in making a ferry collection for the future. If any traders wish to take part we can supply images and some artefacts as well as posters to be displayed. The exhibition runs from August 21st to 26th September with the opening on the Friday evening for Friends and invited guests. Why not join the Friends now and receive your invite for our special opening evening on August 20th. The Friends seem to mark our year by looking forward to the museum opening with spring cleaning, then there’s the Discover Weekend, then the brilliant Bewdley Open Studios supported by imaginative artists workshops with a few Bank Holidays thrown in here and there. Now the Music in the Gardens is upon us and we all know that after the exhibition we will be flat out getting ready for Santa’s visit to our magical grotto. There is always something to do so please feel free to come and join us. Penny Griffiths

Stanley Baldwin... the debate continues "and some there be, which have no memorial..." If memorials are seen as endorsements of virtue, there would be a massive cull of statues in our great cities; no Prime Minister has an unscathed reputation and it is easy to understand why Baldwin's suffered in the 1940s, with the backlash against the pre-war National Government. The survey conducted by Robert Barbour 20 years ago would have comprehended many whose lives were influenced by events of that time; but informed opinion has moved on. Lord Baldwin's claims for his grandfather deserve consideration. Baldwin dominated government for most of the inter-war period, a time of unprecedented economic, political and social unrest, deep fears of Bolshevik revolution and the rise of the Dictators. All politicians reflected a public mood reluctant to contemplate war and those who wrote postwar history chose to ignore his early moves
to rearmament. He has rightly been given credit for encouraging the formation of the 1st minority Labour government, demonstrating that the party could operate in a democratic parliamentary system. His handling of the Abdication revealed tact, determination and possibly a quiet determination to lose an unsatisfactory monarch. A reconciler who sought agreement rather than confrontation he was capable of ruthlessness when necessary, well illustrated by the undermining of Lloyd George and his attack on the Press barons. More shrewd than the image he chose to portray, Baldwin was the first politician to master the new medium of radio, and he was probably the only PM of the century who retired at a time of his choosing, unencumbered by illness or rejection by party, parliament or the electorate. It is time to bury the myths and remember Stanley Baldwin as a most effective leader in the most difficult of times. James Hickson
The continuing debate on whether our former Prime Minister, Earl Baldwin of Bewdley, should have a memorial in the town in which he was born and which he represented in Parliament for most of the inter war years, shows that the power of spin endures. Politicians to the present day continue to rubbish their predecessors for their own aggrandizement and in Churchill's case, his accusation in The Gathering Storm, written immediately after the war, that the previous National Government led by Baldwin was 'feckless' is, frankly, self-serving and factually inaccurate. As Prime Minister in 1935, Baldwin, succeeding the potentially disastrous pacifism of the Ramsey MacDonald led government, immediately set in motion a programme to
equip the RAF with modern aircraft and supported Radar development at a cost that many at the time believed we could not afford. Churchill' s famous 'This Was Their Finest Hour' speech in 1940 could not have been uttered without Baldwin's prescience. I agree wholeheartedly with the present Earl Baldwin of Bewdley's exhortation that we should all be proud of the wise and principled statesman who steered the country through the turbulent inter war years. It is somewhat bizarre that a memorial to Bewdley's most famous son was dedicated in Westminster Abbey in 1997 and yet there is an ongoing debate whether Stanley Baldwin is worthy enough for permanent recognition in his home town. Mentor Link Local Children’s charity Mentor Link continues to go from strength to strength and recently has asked the parents of mentored children to give feedback on the service. A mentor is there primarily for the young people and someone to listen to and support them through various issues they may be facing for example family breakdown. The independence of these adult mentors is the key factor for its success. They offer a different perspective, a listening ear and a confidential service. One parent recently wrote in to say, “ I would like to thank you and your team at Mentor Link for all your time support and patience. It has been a valuable outlet for her coping with friendship issues as well as the separation of myself and her dad. H has a good support network at home in her close family and Mentor Link has helped because it is totally independent and allows her to express her opinions and feelings to someone who allows her to talk freely… She has coped fantastically through a very tough year and have no doubt that Mentor Link helped her achieve this. ” For further information on how you can help support the charity please call 01299 400616 or dell_mentorlink@talktalk.net
Glamourous Life of an Opera Singer Part 5 Here’s another tale from Mozart's Magic Flute. This story is about another tenor; one of the Armed Men. The armed men tell Tamino later in the opera that he must keep his vow of silence, and, in particular, must not talk to his beloved Pamina, which upsets her so much that she sings a long though beautiful aria just to let us know how fed up she is. This Armed Man was a very jolly fellow - always ever so friendly and full of jokes. In rehearsals he used to amuse us all by changing one of his lines from, "You may see her, but you may not speak with her," to (you've guessed it!) "You may see her, but you may not sleep with her." Ho Ho Ho !!! Come the first night, and what does he say for the assembled audience's benefit? That's right, and when he came off stage, he didn't even realise he'd done it. I did something like that myself once, as the Gaoler in Tosca. It was the second production of Tosca I had been in, and it wasn't long since the first production; this one in the original language. The second production was in English, and when the cue came for me to tell the prisoner Cavaradossi he could write a message for his beloved Tosca before being taken off to be shot, instead of singing him the single word, "Write", out popped the word, "Scrivete" ! A frisson went around the audience, and our Cavaradossi struggled to regain his composure for his superb rendition of 'E lucevan le Stelle." He still got shot! Alan Fairs

BEST 100 Camp (Bewdley, Everyone Sleeping in Tents) For the Centenary of Girlguiding locally we held a camp for Brownies, Guides and Leaders. Not quite 100 people, but hey, there were at least 100 legs and arms. Friday 2nd July saw our opening ceremony at Rhydd Scout Camp Site with ribbons in centenary colours radiating from the flag pole and hoisting a bespoke flag. Of course the Brownies didn’t sleep and, would you believe it, the Guides complained about their noisy neighbours. The next day Rainbows visited and circus skills, doing crafty things and learning sign language were the order of the day. After a party tea with birthday cake, the ‘circus man’ demonstrated his own superb skills (with some guiding input from a couple of plate spinners and a uni-cyclist). He lit the camp fire with his fire-eating torches. How scary was that? After a lot of singing and hot dogs the Rainbows went home and the Brownies went to bed and, to everyone’s
relief, needed to be woken for breakfast. The rain kept away for the closing ceremony, which took on an international theme. Kate Dalloway, Megan Williams and Nannie MullerJones renewed their promises as Young Leaders. Kate and Nannie were also presented with Baden Powell Challenge badges; the highest award for Guides. Amy Osborne won the ‘design a badge’ competition and everybody who took part in the weekend received their unique badge. Thanks to all who made BEST happen! Brenda Goode A very proud and privileged District Commissioner

Books We Hate We’ve turned a few heads in the library recently with our display ‘Books We Hate’. It wasn’t a mistake. Some might question the wisdom of this, when we are supposed to be encouraging people to use their library; how will they feel if they walk through the door and find their favourite books are the targets of a hate campaign? The clue is in the heading; love and hate are opposite sides of the same coin, so anything loved by one person is bound to be profoundly disliked by someone else - think Marmite. On seeing the display people have begun conversations with staff and other users, and added their own contributions. Some have taken books off the stand to borrow and form their own opinion! If one of your favourites appeared on this display (one of mine did) this does not mean you are stupid, misguided or without taste. You have taken part in one of humankind’s greatest attempts - making sense of its existence. I hope it is still running in August. If not, pop in and request it in the future. It can be quite cathartic! Kay Sanderson
Bewdley Townswomen's Guild In June an enjoyable talk was given by Eugene Schellenberg, who helped to set up the self funding Ifakara Bakery Project in Tasmania in 2001, to provide bread and employment for local people and to help malnourished children in Ifakara. An extra collection by the members was donated towards this project. A social event is to be arranged for August. New members and visitors are always welcome. For more information phone 01299 401235
OctoberFest 2010 It is that time of year again to remind you that all the festival fringe events throughout October will be published in the OctoberFest flyer. Let us know what you are planning so that your event can be included in this year’s flyer. We will be distributing 8000 flyers throughout the Wyre Forest district and beyond. Last year’s Carrie Hayden concert at The Bewdley School and Sixth Form Centre where she was supported by some excellent school bands was a highlight. There is always great music in the pubs around the town too. This year there are some special events that are already planned including:A blues concert at the Baptist Church in aid of the building homes for the homeless in the Dominican Republic (as reported in The Bridge in May) . A talk organised by the Bewdley Horticultural Society also at the Baptist. Art 4 the Terrified will be exhibiting in Jubilee Gardens with an animal theme ...and there should be some art around the town from the primary schools too. At the end of the month the annual Pumpkin Festival takes place. We look forward to hearing from you. Puppy Tales
Regatta Season On the 15th June. Frazzle and I set off for Leamington and The Guide Dog Centre. We arrived and I was driven into Warwick by one of the trainers who would explain what Arty was responding to as we followed him, with his trainer, at a discreet distance. With pride, I watched him guide his trainer through the crowds, avoiding the obstacles that are so prevalent these days (A boards, shop displays in the street) as well as bow windows, lampposts etc. He confidently led the trainer 'to the chair' in Boots and was only fazed by a passerby insisting on patting him! Please remember that when in harness, dogs are working and should not be distracted. Back at the centre, I met Arty who recognised me and nearly bowled me over! Over a cup of tea, his trainer and I chatted. It was a busy area and Arty just lay on the floor watching the people and dogs pass to and fro. He looked up at me as if saying "This is my world now. Thanks for coming to see me and the good times we shared." It was time to move on, and I did feel a pang as I said goodbye, but Frazzle was bathed and ready for her lunch, so it was back to the car and home. The hot weather has encouraged us to go out early and late in the day and we have shared some great sights. The last was a breeding pair of Great Crested Grebe. I have also met some super people. More of them another day. P.S. Latest news of Arty is that he went to Southampton at the beginning of July for his advanced training of 8 to 10 weeks, after which he will hopefully be paired with his potential owner. Gabi Wootton
Regatta season is well and truly underway and by the time you read this races will have been won and lost at Bewdley Regatta. The rowing rewards system involves pots and points. Pots are usually tankards made either of pewter or pottery, and marked with the date and occasion. They are given to the whole crew of a winning race, and can accumulate into loft-fuls of boxes over the years I am told! Points are awarded for sweep oar (one large oar per person) or sculling (two smaller oars, one in each hand) and mean that the successful rower climbs a ladder of points, with the intention that competitors of similar standing row against each other. Juniors row in age groups, the youngest being around J11...scullers of 11 years old or less. At this age youngsters can only scull because it is a symmetrical activity. Sweep oar necessarily involves an element of twisting which is not good for the growing spine! The crew of 16 year old boys who won our Pub'n Club regatta in June are now rowing regularly in an 8 and doing well!

Dear readers, This month I want to tell you about some events for our young people that will take place on a couple of hot August nights this summer. If you are too old to indulge in the festivities, then take consolation from the fact that for two nights at least you will know exactly where the kids are and what they are up to. On 12th August between 6 and 9 p.m. there will be a ‘Party in the Park’ at Bewdley Leisure Centre for all 10 to 19 year olds. On 19th August a similar event will be held on the Memorial Park, Lickhill Rd, Stourport. These events have been run for the past six summers and have increased in popularity with over 2000 young people attending last year. A variety of activities will take place, including fairground attractions, stormtroopers from the ‘dark side’ (not Kidderminster, the other one), climbing walls, street entertainers teaching circus skills, and W.F.C.H. Neighbourhood Wardens who have organised a Tug of War competition. Wyre Forest District Council’s ‘hot spot’ team will be running a range of sporting events and Youth Services are providing practical activities such as nail art, hair braiding, and henna tattooing. There will be a number of educational demonstrations and displays including a ‘healthy lifestyles’ tent with advice on safe sex and the dangers of substance misuse.
The Co-op are bringing ‘Pete the Penguin’ and ‘Healthy Hound ‘ to promote healthy food options for young people. All the activities, including hot food and refreshments, are provided free, which allows total inclusion for everyone, whatever their financial means. The driving force behind every ‘Party in the Park’ is my highly regarded colleague PC Jon Harris from Stourport. However he does not relish being in the limelight, so I shall embarrass him no further. This year’s events will run a theme promoting alternative activities for young people. A large number of clubs and organisations from across Wyre Forest have been invited to showcase what they have to offer. The hope is to encourage membership so that young people will find something positive to occupy themselves with instead of hanging around bus stops and play areas to the annoyance of other people. I am sure that there will be those who will grumble that everything is provided for the kids and nothing for older people. The simple fact is that very few elderley people cause us any problems. However if there is sufficient demand we can organise something for you, but would you really take advantage of climbing walls, henna tattoos and advice on safe sex? I think not.

ELDERLY TAX PAYERS
You may be entitled to a tax refund. H M Revenue have recently written to tax payers who received a repayment in previous years, advising them that they are no longer required to complete a tax return. This is misleading, as tax repayments will be lost if no return is submitted. We have successfully secured repayments for clients who erroneously believed that their affairs were correct. If you have received tax repayments before, speak to Nigel or Tim, who will advise you free of charge, whether a submission would prove beneficial.

TOWN COUNCIL NEWS
Community News
TOWN COUNCIL MEETING HELD ON 5TH JULY 2010 Bewdley Car Parking Review Councillors were pleased to note the recommendations of the District Council’s Parking Review Panel and Scrutiny Committee which included allowing people with Residents’ Parking Passes and Season Tickets to park for a maximum uninterrupted period of two months rather than 23 hours as at present and secondly, changing the pay and display machines to allow a “roll-over” of paid parking from one evening to the following morning so avoiding the need to move their car before 8.00am. It was hoped these proposals would be agreed and confirmed later by the full District Council Policing of Public Events The Council had been given notice by West Mercia Police that their policy of policing public events would be changing as from 2011 due to pressure on resources. Whilst the Police would continue to provide support for Remembrance and St George’s Day parades and support community events where they had a stall or there was a risk of disorder, they were withdrawing from traffic control or marshalling for purely local events such as the Carnival, Christmas Lights or Mayor’s Parade. The Council felt this was an unwelcome move and that a letter to the Chief Constable should be sent regretting such proposal and seeking a change of mind. Welch Gate Traffic & Air Pollution What appeared to have been a useful meeting as between some residents in Welch Gate and the County Council had taken place following the publication of a report by their consultants, Halcrow. They had produced some options including the introduction of traffic signals or once again giving Welch Gate traffic priority at the junction with Dog Lane. However, none represented an easy solution with the clear risk that there could be knockon problems for the rest of the town centre. The Council will ask for a presentation by Halcrow at a meeting to which the public would be invited Future Town Council meetings held at The Guildhall are: 2nd August, 6th September, 11th October, 1st November and 6th December all on Mondays at 7.30pm Minutes of Town Council and Planning Committee Meetings are on the Notice Boards outside the Mayor’s Parlour, in the Guildhall Entrance and Load Street Car Park. They are also available at the Library and at the Town Clerk’s Office and on the Town Council’s page of www.bewdley.org.uk. TOWN COUNCIL NEWS IS PRODUCED AND PUBLISHED BY BEWDLEY TOWN COUNCIL

Blooming wonderful Children at Bewdley Primary School have been busy preparing for Bewdley in Bloom. Each class has been busy planting flowers and vegetables in their gardens. The main challenge was keeping everything watered! They children have set up vegetable patches with a very special scarecrow and pretty flowers in the quiet area. They also have a beautiful court yard which the after school gardening club have planted using some very unusual planters including wellies, recycling boxes and shoes. Amy Crowther, teacher said “the children have worked so hard, coming to school extra early in the morning to ensure all the plants and vegetables are watered”.
Bewdley’s First Harvest Fair 25/26 September 2010 On September 25th and 26th, Bewdley Museum and Bewdley Development Trust will be presenting the first Harvest Fair for Bewdley. The Fair is a brand new event designed to celebrate the very best of the town and region’s food and drink offering along with demonstrations of traditional arts and crafts. With much of the activity based around Bewdley’s beautiful museum, visitors can experience basket making, strawcraft, hobby horse making and much more. There will also be a focus on local produce and recipes including rare breeds, fruit, preserves, pickles, cider and perry. The Fair which will evoke some of the traditions of harvest time, is being held in association with the Grow With Wyre programme which aims to restore the natural landscape in and around the forest. This includes re-planting orchards and hedgerows and increasing production of fruits such as apples and cherries which have historically been associated with the area. Young people from local schools will be getting involved too with the opportunity to take part in dance and arts projects, and to learn more about farming and food production within Wyre Forest. Finally there are plans for a showpiece Coracle Race which will take place across the river at Lax Lane. These traditional craft have long been associated with Bewdley and the River Severn and will provide a challenge to participants and great entertainment for spectators. For more information about the event or to find out how to get involved, please contact Ruth Finney at Bewdley Museum on 01299 403573, or Ellie Hooper at Bewdley Development Trust on 01299 405516.
