Where are they now? Well done to Angela Maycock who was the first to spot Cheryl Stephens as a young girl. Thanks to all our eagle eyed readers who spotted that we failed to identify Tony Thompson from Bewdley Farm Shop in our November issue. Sorry space was very tight in the last issue, so we were unable to include the answer. Now who is this delightful young lady? Email us if you've guessed to:editorial@bewdleybridge.org.uk
Bewdley - open for business support your local shops and traders January was the planned start by Severn Trent Water and National Grid to carry out important renewal work to improve services for its customers in Bewdley. Work to replace ageing water mains and renew old metal gas mains will take place simultaneously, starting in January 2010 until May 2010. But remember - Bewdley is open for business - so come on - support all our local traders in our town. Whether you are looking for high quality meat, vegetables, cheeses or fancy a good meal and a pint or two, Bewdley has a lot to offer. Severn Trent Water will be replacing a water main pipe that is over 100 years old with a new plastic mains pipe. The current old water main has started to leak frequently, with six separate bursts being experienced between September and November 2009. National Grid will replace the old metal gas mains running along Load Street, which have now reached the end of their working life, with hard wearing plastic pipe. The work will be broken down into five phases to cause the minimum disruption to traffic, local residents and businesses. The first phase began on Load Street on Monday 11th January until Friday 12th February. Editor : Margaret Ashmore

Editorial
The Bridge is the community voice of Bewdley. It is delivered free monthly to more than 4,600 homes You have to say, life isn’t easy for anyone wanting to get from one side of Bewdley to the other on four wheels at the moment. Last month we had the Great Snowfall when the town showed us that hills can be a hindrance as well as beautiful. Now it’s holes in the road. So I’m beginning by saying that I hope you got your magazine last month, and that this edition isn’t too badly delayed. If so it was because our volunteers are an amazing bunch who hoof it round the streets every month without complaint or reward whatever the weather. They have my gratitude. This month shows a departure from our normally sober cover. Over the Christmas period, Bewdley children were entertained by Kev Sutherland, of Beano fame. I cornered him to ask for something for The Bridge, and before rushing back to London he produced this. I like to think it wasn’t a reflection of my normally immaculate appearance, but more of a generic sort of representation of all of our Bridge people. Our contributors this month have given us some great articles, and have been incredibly prompt. (Could it be that, like me, the weather kept them at home by a warm fire and their computer?) There’s news of the river, the forest, our museum and Bewdley through the eyes of an exBewdley resident, (Bewdleyite? Bewdlarian? Bewdlier? Any suggestions to the usual address), some stunning photos from Bewdley people as well as Gary, and lots more. So forget the roadworks and the awful weather, pull up a chair, and enjoy this month’s magazine Oh, and by the way, I haven’t forgotten Florence the hen. You’ll have to wait till next month for that story. Margaret Ashmore

You move to a new area and you have a new job to settle in to, a new home to find and perhaps schools to sort out for the kids. Once the initial hard work is over, you then start to think about how to meet people and build a social circle. Or perhaps you have been in the area for a long time but would like to expand your horizons? If you’re interested in coming along to a couple of evenings so see if you like it, give one of us a ring. If you like, we can even arrange for a couple of us to meet you in a pub for an informal chat. We are a relaxed bunch and welcome all sorts - just as long as you enjoy social occasions and would like to be able to put something back in to the community a couple of times a year. We look forward to hearing from you.

Bewdley Horticultural Society Composting and Mulching
Composting is a natural process that converts plant materials to an organic soil supplement or mulch. Gardeners use compost to increase the organic matter in soil, improve its physical properties and to replace depleted nutrients to enable further plant growth. Mulching refers to the practice of applying a layer of materials such as compost, leaves or grass cuttings to the soil surface to change and control soil temperature, moisture levels and to control weed growth. Preparation of compost can be done very cheaply. A clean and securely lidded barrel can be perforated with several rows of holes for drainage and air circulation, filled with composting materials and rolled every few days to mix the contents. Local authorities will often have sales of plastic composters for a reasonable sum but you can build your own for a few pounds and a bit of effort. A three-chambered system is very efficient for fast composting. It holds large amounts of compost as an assembly line, having three batches of compost in varying stages. The compost material is started in the first cell and allowed to react for 3 to 6 weeks. Next, it is turned into the middle cell for another 4 to 8 weeks, while a new batch of material is started in the first bin. Finally, the material in the middle bin is moved to the last bin as nearly finished compost and then left until finished composting, usually another 5 to 16 weeks. Each cell is five feet by three feet and about four to five feet high. This volume is ideal for maintaining heat and at the same time is manageable for turning. Build with open sides to aid air circulation and slats at the front to give easy access to the contents for turning. Stuart Williams

They meet at the Black Boy Hotel, Kidderminster Road, Bewdley on the first Wednesday of each month starting 7.30pm November to March and 8.0pm April to October The Bewdley Branch is a group of friendly committed Women who enjoy what they do. Last year they raised £2,234.41, so far this year they have managed £1849.67 a wonderful start; and had great fun doing it! You would be most welcome at their meetings, just come along or for more information ring Monica 01562 753162 or Jackie 01299 400363. The only qualification is that you are committed and sympathetic to the Aims of The Royal British Legion
Bewdley Methodist Church On Shrove Tuesday the 16th February we will be holding our Pancake Lunch. This has been held for the past few years and always proves to be very popular. We will be joining with all other Methodist Churches in the Circuit for a united service at Trinity Church in Kidderminster on the 7th February at 6.30p.m. This service will be lead by the Chairman of the Wolverhampton & Shrewsbury District Rev. John Howard. For details of any of our regular activities please contact a member of church or Rev. Crawford Logan on 01526 742722
Bewdley Library I hope the big freeze has gone by now and that I’m not still hobbling down to work, taking ten minutes at the end of my journey to take off my gloves, take off my coat, take off my hat, take off my glasses, pull my neck warmer over my head, put my glasses back on, take off my boots and woolly socks, put on my working shoes and sort out my hair. I’m exhausted before I start. February is upon us and it's still refreshing to try new things; since late January we have offered a flower arranging course at the library which runs throughout this month until March 4th. We are hoping to run other courses in future; there could be a charge for these but those in receipt of benefits may be eligible for exemption. Keep in touch to keep informed! Forget Valentine’s cards, this month we’re saying 'We love Local History'! Come and take part in our library quiz; see how many places you can identify from our selection of photographs and find out how well you really do know and love your town! Kay Sanderson

Who Pays the Ferryman? ... we need your memories. The 2010 Friends of Bewdley Museum Annual Exhibition will feature the ferries which used to operate in and around Bewdley. The exhibition is largely inspired by the interest which developed after David Griffiths gave the well loved Arley Ferry its last resting place in Dog Lane, Bewdley. Tourists from far and wide, from the UK and as far as Australia have visited to share memories. The exhibition will run from Friday 20th August until 26th September in the Wyre Forest Gallery, Bewdley Museum. To bring the story of our local ferries to life we want your memories, your photographs and any movie footage that you may have. In particular we would like to record your memories for sound archives, some will be played at the exhibition. Here are some examples of the personal memories we have already received which really bring history to life . . . 83 year old Kathleen Mary Vine brought along photographs of herself and her Grandfather Stanley Bow - ferryman. She was amazed to see we had been given a photograph of her Aunt Emily. Carl Price emailed the most wonderful image of his Mum and Dad, John and Kay Price who got married at St Peter’s Church, Arley and used the ferry to travel to their reception at the Harbour Inn. Tom Whatmore, one of the last Whatmores of Upper Arley emailed to say the last boatmen to work the ferry were Fred Whatmore and Bert Evans. In 2008 George Nightingale gave us the anchor of the last Arley Ferry and this will be on display during the exhibition. Maxie Lavan gave us the last two tickets ever issued on the ferry’s last trip on 22nd January 1972. There will be other items including a wonderful model of the last ferry on show during the exhibition. We would love to add to these memories with your own. For more information please contact Liz Cowley at Bewdley Musuem 01299 403573 or Penny and David Griffiths on 01299 404912.

I rescue my leather shoes from the effects of salt in the ice and snow by rubbing the white stains gently with a cloth or tissue soaked in diluted malt vinegar. This appears to remove the salt stains completely. A good brushing with ordinary shoe polish afterwards restores the leather to excellent condition. River Ice There was ice in the Severn on the 9th of January. It reminded me of something I read recently: "In winter fogs, with ice swirling down the racing brown river, Bewdley can be a bleak place". In 1641, John Taylor, famed for his poetry about rivers and therefore nicknamed the "Water Poet", came on a trip up the Severn. At Bewdley, he lodged at the 'Pyde Bull'. "I went from Bewdley, being an extreame rainy day". It was early August. So the weather can be miserable in our town in the winter and the summer, but does it matter? We know that the warmth of our place depends upon the people. This is far from being a 'bleak place' to live. Heather Flack Taylor did spell extreme as extreame; it is not my mis-spelling.

We are part of a very big, old established charity set up to help seniors, who are still active but cannot quite cope with living by themselves. And because we are a charity, living with us is not expensive.

Dear Readers, Christmas and New Year in Bewdley were notable only in that for the first time in years we saw some snow over the festive period. That and the cold have stayed with us with a vengeance, but despite all the slithering and slipping and the apparent inability of the Country to cope, those of us on the wrong side of 40 will remember far worse conditions in winters of old. Perhaps we have become soft as a result of the globally-warmed winters of the past 20 years, or maybe it is too easy now to quote Health & Safety as a reason for not coping. We have received many complaints about gritting of rural and estate roads, all of which we pass on to Highways (despite the apparent belief of some callers, the police do not grit roads. The boot of a panda will not hold enough). There is only a certain amount of road salt available, and a limited number of vehicles and staff to spread it. The consequence is that apart from main roads and bus routes, most other roads will never be gritted. If that affects you, then you must take whatever measures are necessary to cope with it. At this time of year the weather is most likely to catch us out. If you have not prepared your home, your car and yourself, don’t blame anyone else if you
suffer. A little common sense will go a long way. The traffic delays in Bewdley town centre due to the water and gas mains renewals will continue until mid-May. These will be carried out in 5 phases, affecting at various times sections of Load St, High St and Dowles Rd. Although the contractors will try to maintain a flow of traffic, it will be very slow. Shops and businesses will remain open, but if your intention is merely to pass straight through the town, use the bypass. The fewer vehicles there are in the town, the better it will be for everyone. The first PACT meeting of 2010 will be held in the comfort of the Baptist Church in High St. at 6.30 p.m. on Wednesday 3rd March. No doubt the road works will be a topic of conversation. If the panel cannot answer your questions, we will refer them to someone who can. We hope to see you there. Look out for our surgeries in the Youth CafĂŠ, or join Neighbourhood Watch for regular updates on criminal activity locally. It will cost you nothing except a little time and interest. Best wishes for a safe and secure 2010. Police Sergeant Chris Aimes Bewdley & Rural Local Policing Team. 0300 333 3000 ext 3060 or 3901 Bewdleyandrural.lpt@westmercia.pnn.police.uk

A lifetime of memories Sitting in St Anne’s Church on Christmas Day brings a lifetime of memories flooding back. Christened (I don’t remember it!) and confirmed there, racing in the aisle with my little brother, dark winters’ evenings at choir practice and evensong. On Sunday mornings, I clutched one coin for the collection and another to buy sweets at Madeley’s after the service. We sat in the front row with my father (and his shopping basket full of hymnbooks) until we were old enough to join the choir one by one. I remember Mr Montague-Youens telling beautifully illustrated stories and Robert Gibbs making us laugh. I gained a lifelong love of church music through the choir and I value my memories of singing in Worcester, Llandaff and Coventry cathedrals. People haven’t changed – lots of faces I don’t know, but Bewdley is still as friendly as ever. There are still a few people I know and I love seeing them once a year when I come to visit. I miss the choir stalls. I know that the space is more useful now but they were old friends in which I had many a huddled giggle with choir pals. My siblings and I are scattered to the four winds – Jonathan in Cambridge, Tiffany in Picardy, Gerard in St Helens and me in Berlin, but we share fond and abiding memories of a happy childhood in Bewdley and St Anne’s. WAR MEMORIES
Hetty remembers being a tiny person in a tiny school in Wribbenhall during the Second World War. I think it must have been over at the side of the Black Boy, for she says the Air Raid Shelter was very near - at Styles’s Mill where they sold seeds, and where there are houses now. Someone would say it was time for an air raid practice - I don’t think anyone made a siren noise - and the children would grab their gas masks and pile into the shelter. It was a small one, just for the school, Hetty says, and she didn’t like it one bit. For one thing, it was so dark, and the masks themselves were frightening. No-one explained what the gas did - just that it was dangerous. They had to go in a crocodile - two by two. She can’t remember if she always walked with a special friend. Once they were shown the “gas mask” for babies, something like a holdall the whole baby was put into. After a while, a teacher would say “Let’s pretend it’s the All Clear!” and back they went to school. After one air raid a lot of shrapnel was found on the Rifle Range, she says. But she can’t think of any others locally. Hetty as told to Jane Moreton

How I came to Bewdley Late in 2005, after a spate of various illnesses, I found myself unable to walk without the aid of a walking stick. Earlier that year, a consultant neurologist had given me an ultimatum, I could either end up in a wheelchair or lose my sight. For me there was no question of mobility overriding my sense of sight. Incidentally, I was already blind in one eye. At the time, we were living in Hampshire. After a lot of deliberation, it was decided that we should move nearer one of our daughters and we soon found a ground floor retirement flat in Bewdley within four miles of our youngest daughter. At this time in December 2005, I was still just able to walk with a walking stick. Unfortunately, one Sunday morning whilst attending a Palm Sunday Service, I suddenly lost the use of my right leg and, thanks to all the good folk who helped, managed to get back home. So, I ended up in the wheelchair which the neurologist had predicted. It was only then that we appreciated how ‘wheelchair unfriendly’ Bewdley is !! I guess you cannot have a beautiful historical town without having to sacrifice amenities for the disabled. Although most of the shops are now inaccessible, I can still get into St Anne’s where I appreciate and enjoy the services plus the friendliness of the congregation. Our daughter is very good to us and despite her workload as a GP, takes us out every week which is a great treat. My husband and I are members of DFAS and the National Trust and I am a member of The Mothers Union and Women’s Own. All in all, we both love the area and feel very blessed to be living in such a beautiful part of the country. Joan Dean
Glamorous life of an opera singer
The editor has been on at me for some time to write some pieces cataloguing 'the glamorous life of an opera singer.' This is not easy for me, because although I have been earning enough to pay income tax for too many years as an opera singer, it doesn't seem to me that I have been at the 'glamorous' end. By this I mean that although I might have to use an aeroplane to get to the venue, I have never flown first - or even business - class. It's true for some singers that audiences come to hear them
in 'it doesn't much matter what'. In my case, the audience comes to hear the opera; not to hear me! However, looking back over the years, there are one or two tales to tell. Sorry, but I dare not say the names of the singers, or even of the companies involved. So watch this space, and I’ll take you backstage at the opera, and tell you about the singer who ended up in a railway siding, how the leading lady was wrestled offstage by a singer, and even my experience of amorous encounters on stage. ELDERLY TAX PAYERS
You may be entitled to a tax refund. H M Revenue have recently written to tax payers who received a repayment in previous years, advising them that they are no longer required to complete a tax return. This is misleading, as tax repayments will be lost if no return is submitted. We have successfully secured repayments for clients who erroneously believed that their affairs were correct. If you have received tax repayments before, speak to Nigel or Tim, who will advise you free of charge, whether a submission would prove beneficial.

TOWN COUNCIL NEWS
Community News
TOWN COUNCIL MEETING HELD ON 4TH JANUARY 2010 Town Council Budget for 2010/11 The Council agreed that there should be NO increase in the level of Council Tax levied on householders. That will mean for an average (Band D) householder the amount allocated to Town Council functions will remain at £21.67. However, having built up an adequate level of reserves in recent years and having spent cautiously this year, the Town Council will still be able to increase its actual expenditure next year by 2% for the benefit of all residents and businesses. Internal Auditor The Council is looking for a new Internal Auditor following the retirement of Mr Robert Whale after many years of service. The Council agreed to advertise for a successor, with a view to him/her taking up the role as from 1st April. Please see advert in this edition of The Bridge for further details Christmas Lights Members of the Council were pleased with the success of the Christmas Lights that had been in place in the town centre for five weeks over the Christmas/New Year period. They felt that the cost of having them installed and maintained, the cost of the electricity and the grant made available to the Lights Committee to help run the Festival on 5th December was well worth while. Next year thanks to a grant from the County Council’s Economy Action Group, we shall purchase some additional low energy lights and displays to add to the attraction. Ribbesford Though technically outside Bewdley’s boundary, the Town Council were glad of the opportunity to comment on the draft Conservation Appraisal produced by Wyre Forest District Council on the Ribbesford Hamlet. They were glad of the recognition that the historic character of Ribbesford should be maintained but the continued neglect of Ribbesford House itself was a matter of concern. Future Town Council meetings held at The Guildhall are: 1 February, 1 March, 6th April and 4th May 2010 all at 7.30pm. The Annual Town Meeting is 26th April 2010 Minutes of Town Council and Planning Committee Meetings are on the Notice Boards outside the Mayor’s Parlour, in the Guildhall and Load Street Car Park, in the Library and at the Town Clerk’s Office and on the Town Council’s page of www.bewdley.org.uk.. Spectacular! That’s what the forest landscape is at time of writing, with a brilliant blue sky and blanket of sparkling snow that invites to come and play. The garden birds are busy on the feeders and bird table, maximising their chances to fill up and fight the cold, but in the forest there seems to be less activity. With little natural food on offer the best choice is to conserve energy.
However the snow reveals the tracks of rabbits, squirrels and smaller rodents foraging about and trying to locate their food stores. Plenty of deer were moving about last night too, their footprints crossed by the tyre marks of an early mountain biker. Is it dogs or badgers that push their way under the barbed wire to get into the orchard? The arrangement of toes in the footprints suggests badgers and a tuft of wiry hairs caught on a barb confirm it. Badgers are one of the species that have hollow hair to help insulate them against the cold (so do deer). I’m not sure if this improves its usefulness for paintbrushes and shaving brushes (and sporrans!) At this time of the year badgers give their setts a spring clean – if you are lucky enough to know the whereabouts of a badger family you may see them digging new chambers, pushing out old bedding and gathering fresh. This is in readiness for the arrival of the cubs, also in February. By the time you read this there will also be catkins and snowdrops to remind you of spring’s approach.
Be the first to notice by joining the regular Health Walks in the forest each Tuesday and Sunday at 11am. The Discovery Centre has two events for you to join this half-term holiday: Tuesday 16th February Make one, take one Children aged 5 to 11 are invited to help us make some displays ready for the New Community Discovery Centre (opening soon!). There will be finger-painting, clay work and many other craft projects to contribute to, with a chance to take some home too. 10.30am – 12.00noon, £3.50 per child – places must be booked. Friday 19th February Dusk Walk A chance for families with children aged 8 and above to observe nocturnal creatures at the deer hide after a short drive through the forest.
Meet at the Visitor Centre at 4pm, finishes at 6pm. Wear warm clothes and bring a torch. £5 per person or £15 for a family ticket covering 2 adults and 2 children. Places must be booked. There is also a Deer Watch on 16th March for adults only. This event costs £6 and lasts from 4pm to 7pm. All these events can be booked on 01299 266929 (answerphone available) or 01299 266944. I asked some Bewdley people a question: Have you ever met anyone famous? Here are some of their answers. Whilst serving with the Royal Air Force I was introduced to Prince Charles. His comment was, “Are you on duty again?” Lyn Fox I used to see Johnny Morris out shopping in my home town of Newbury, but he left the animals back at the zoo. Tony Redstall I used to help out at a centre up north, where one of my jobs was to entertain in the evening. I used to sing Mike Harding songs until I looked across the room one day to see – Mike Harding. That shut me up. Keith James When I was nursing in London, I nursed Sir John Barbirolli. He didn’t do anything very musical while he was there. Janet Kirk During the 1966 General Election I was teaching in Devon and persuaded the three candidates to share a platform at the school. The next day the young Tory candidate, Michael Heseltine, saw me and asked anxiously how I thought it had gone. He went on his way and duly won a safe seat - for some obscure reason, he never sought my advice again. James Hickson I was in the same form as Roy Hattersley at school in Sheffield. He was clever but a bit too aware of it. Barbara Burgin When I was standing for the District Council in 1994 Paddy Ashdown came for a photocall in Bewdley to support us. Rowing-talk If you row, spoons and blades are nothing to do with cutlery, and in a boat there is always someone stroking, which is not as odd as it sounds! So here are a few rowing-speak terms in English… Boat - you guessed it, boat! Bow - the front of the boat. (Only confusing because the rowers are all facing away from it, so it looks like the back!) Stern - the back of the boat. (Only confusing because the rowers are facing towards it so it looks like the front). Blade - oar. Spoon - the flat-ish coloured part of the oar that goes in the water. Loom - the long bit of the oar between the handle and the spoon. Scull - oar if you are in a sculling boat, or the verb means to row with a blade in each hand. Sweep – rowing where each crew member has one blade and they sit in the boat with the oars on alternate sides. Bowside - where the rowers sit with blades out to their left. Strokeside - where rowers sit with blades out to the right. Stroke - the rower at the back (looks like the front) of the boat, who sets the pace for the rest of the crew. This is called Stroking the Boat. Feathering - where the spoons are turned to be level with the water between the end of one stroke and the beginning of the next. Square - the spoon is at right angles to the water (eg at the end of a stroke) Catch - the very beginning of the stroke where the spoon enters the water. Beer/Wine - essential.
