Bring Back The Bewdley Cherry Fair At a talk organised by the Bewdley Transition Group on a freezing night in December, John Isles of Uncllys Farm and the Wyre Forest Community Land Trust told us of the cherry orchards of Wyre Forest - orchards he is trying to revive. As he, Dr Cedric Quayle of Bowcastle Farm and Wade Muggleton, the County Council’s Countryside Officer described the history, several people at the meeting began chipping in their own stories of the old cherry harvest and the tons of scarlet fruit that was loaded onto trains at Bewdley Station each summer. As they talked, a vivid picture of yet another important facet of Bewdley’s rich history unfolded. How many people, I wonder know that Waterloo Road, Early River Place and Elton Road in Hales Park are named after cherry varieties from the orchards that stood there countering the apple varieties of Bramley, Russett and Laxton on street names across the Cleobury Road? The inspirational moment, though, was an old photo of Load Street with cherry stalls lined up in front of St Anne’s Church. Apparently, this market could reach such a proportion that Bewdley became impassable. There was even a court case in which the police tried to sue the farmers for obstruction but were defeated when Bewdley’s charter was invoked. As people contributed more and more to the discussion it seemed clear that, despite there being few cherry orchards left and allowing for the variable nature of the crop, it was worth a try reviving the cherry fair next summer. All those present loved the idea. Perhaps we could re-enact the famous court battle, sell cherries and cherry produce in Load Street (jams, sauces, liqueurs, cakes), let people bring their own cherries to the museum to have the variety identified, have a cherry Queen and a parade. All we need is plenty of frost this winter to set the trees for a good crop. Looking from my eyrie across the glistening rooftops this morning, I reckon we could be lucky. Neville Farmer

Free computer courses prove highly popular In the last issue of the Bridge, there was an insert for free computer courses being provided by the Wyre Academy, the training division of TDM, Bewdley’s specialist IT company. Demand has been very high, but there are still some free places available. Ring Derek,Tom or Ellie on 01299 405719 or email: derrin@tdm.info for more details. The Wyre Academy is now offering IT Apprenticeships - more details are given inside.

Editorial

The Bridge is the community voice of Bewdley. It is delivered free monthly to more than 4,600 homes As I sit here in my garden basking in the warm sunshine… No, not really. This month, as so often, I write my next month’s editorial on the same day that the new Bridge is delivered. Every time I think,“Why didn’t I mention the ice? Or say how good the Christmas Lights day had been? Then I remember that those things were still in the future as I wrote my editorial. I was glad I got the cold weather right, though of course I’d no idea how bad it was going to get. We have some photos this month to remind us of our dreadful December with its fearful low temperatures. So I thought I’d start this month on a cheery note hoping it’ll come true. I ‘m probably going to regret mentioning the sun, but I’m sure I’m not the only one who found delivering the magazine hard work last month. Talking of battling to deliver the Bridge, quite a few people this month have had a note from me in their January magazine. We’ve had a number of deliverers who for very good reasons have had to drop out. If you were one of the people who had a note, I do hope you’ll consider helping out with a few magazines. It’s your community magazine and can only exist with the aid of volunteers. I’m really hoping for some people who can pop into church, pick up a handful of copies and put them through their neighbours’ doors. The Bridge team will put it together – can you help deliver it? The number to ring is Paul Mann (another volunteer!) on 01299 400794. Who knows? You may be delivering the magazine in your shorts!

Services February A warm welcome from Bewdley Baptist Church. Please see details of our Christmas Services in the centre colour page. We extend a warm welcome to everyone to join us for any of these services.

It is with great sadness that we have had to say goodbye to our oldest member – 97 year old Phyllis Dalloway who had been an active member of our church for nearly 70 years. She passed away peacefully on December 24th.

The Knit and Natter group received a very generous donation from the Bewdley Carnival Committee for which we are very grateful. This will enable to group to carry on knitting for charitable causes for the foreseeable future.

This year’s Women’s World Day of Prayer will be held at our church on Friday March 4th at 2pm. The service has been prepared by the Women of Chile.

IT opportunities for young people There is good news for young people who are interested in a career in IT and for organisations who want to have employees with the very latest IT skills. TDM, the Bewdley based IT company, has been selected to provide Government funded training services for organisations who take on IT apprentices. The cost of training apprentices who are aged 16 to 18 is completely free and and up to 50% contribution for 19+ year old employed adults. “No matter what sector, an IT apprentice provides a host of benefits to any organisation” said Derrin Kent, managing director of TDM. “Apprenticeships allow companies to train and develop young people to match their company's needs and make a real contribution to their business. Apprentices receive specialist IT training while assisting with the organisation’s day-to-day workload and bring in the new skills they acquire.” Apprentices can be existing employees, recruited directly or through TDM’s database. They will obtain a City and Guilds qualification (equivalent to two A levels) plus two industry recognised qualifications. The scheme is being operated through the Wyre Academy, which is the specialist training division within TDM. The IT Apprenticeship scheme is open to all types and sizes of companies, including businesses, IT organisations, schools and the education sector More details of how the scheme works and the benefits for young people and Wyre Forest organisations can be obtained by contacting TDM on 01299 405719 Monday Mornings Project

Volunteers wanted Mentor Link is a local children’s charity dedicated to supporting young people in schools by providing them with a volunteer mentor. The mentors listen to and support the young people with the aim of creating a more positive attitude towards learning. Over our eight year history they have many success stories; as one parent writes, “I would like to thank you and your team at Mentor Link for all your time, support and patience you have shown H over the last year. It has been a valuable outlet for her, coping with friendship issues as well as the separation of myself and her dad. H has coped fantastically through a very tough year and I’m extremely proud of her and I’ve no doubt Mentor Link helped her achieve this. ” They urgently need volunteer mentors for new schools in the Wyre Forest area and also volunteers for their shop in Stourport. The charity shop urgently needs volunteers to process, price and sell stock (bric a brac, clothes, books etc). Both voluntary roles offer a flexible and friendly approach to volunteering and supporting local children in your community. The Old Town Hall

amazed to learn they had beeb awarded 4 stars. So was it worth all the hard work? Lois and John say a heartly YES. Year on year their guest numbers have increased. People come to Bewdley from far and near and for many reasons. Australians and Kiwis walk the Worcester Way, Norwegians ride the SVR on the autumn steam event, Swiss families visit friends whilst the Germans ‘do culture’.

Lois and John Hopkins had dreamt of running a Bed and Breakfast right from the start on their honeymoon in Bewdley but had to wait another 40 years before that dream was realised. They fell in love with The Old Town Hall on Wyre Hill and five years ago bravely crossed the Spaghetti Junction into Worcester. Starting up a small business from scratch was a leap in the dark for them. All the internal alterations and putting in the additional plumbing was completed under the watchful eye of the Conservation Officer. It was hard juggling DIY with commuting to work in Birmingham and generally settling into their new environment but great fun. With the help of friends and family the documents needed by their accountant, tax man, prospective guests and the advertisers were compiled. Sitting nervously at the first vetting from Visit Britain they were

They meet people from all over the British Isles and find that although they are the hosts they are entertained by their guests’ stories. Their communal breakfast table leaves no room for shyness. Everyone is introduced to their neighbour and soon the room is full of chatter and laughter. “Bewdley is a beautiful town and easy to promote. As front line advocates the shop keepers and Tourist Information Centre are ambassadors for its friendly and helpfulness.” said Lois. “The local museum is in the top 10 attractions with a venue that educates and engages everyone – free. The diverse selection of ‘eateries’ offer many pubs and restaurants to recommend to our guests. They stroll down the ‘religious quarter’ informed that The Little Pack Horse is on the left past the C. of E., RC, Methodist and Baptist Church. If they find the Quaker Meeting House they know they’ve gone too far!”

Kidderminster Beekeepers Association Pam Collier will give a talk and demonstration on making soaps and creams from bee products on Thursday 24th February, 7.30pm, at the Baptist Church, Franche Road, Kidderminster. Anyone interested in bees/beekeeping will be very welcome. For more information ring 01299 825578

Too Good to be True? If it seems to be too good to be true it probably is. We have learned to be wary of promises of high rates of return on investments but installing a solar PV system could be one exception. Solar PV (photo voltaic) panels generate electricity using energy from sunlight. Light rather than heat is needed so the panels still make electricity on cold or cloudy days. Typical domestic installations could cost from £5,000 to £15,000 (for 1kW to 4kW peak systems). For systems linked to the national grid, savings come from 3 sources: 0.413p Feed in Tariff (FIT) for every unit generated (whether you use it or not), a further 11p (or whatever you pay) saved for every unit that you use yourself, and 3p per unit for electricity fed back into the national grid (most electricity companies estimate that this will be 50% of what you generate). A reputable installer will use a standardised

February in the Vegetable Garden. Perhaps in these straitened times we should consider growing more of our own garden produce. We know that February can be colder than both of the previous months so making a start on growing vegetables can be an uncertain move but if the ground is not frozen or water logged finish the winter digging and improve soil conditioning with rotted manure and compost. If there is crop, such as cabbages, cauliflowers and sprouts left now is the time to harvest them and prepare the ground afresh. Out door plantings can be made, weather permitting for broad beans, garlic, Jerusalem artichokes, shallot sets and turnips. Other work can be started on fruit trees and bushes, grape vines and rhubarb. Of course many other seeds can be started in

assessment procedure to give you a more detailed idea of potential savings. Generally speaking the larger the system, the more cost effective it is (our 3.2 kW system gives about 9% return pa on cost). Before considering “free schemes” where installers meet the cost and the homeowner gets “free electricity” consider whether you might be better off paying the full cost (even with a loan if needed) as otherwise the installer would be keeping the bulk of the potential income. To benefit from the FIT your installer must be Micro-generation Certification Scheme (MCS) accredited: contact via www.microgenerationcertification.org or on 0207 090 1082 for a list. Start you search with local installers. For more information contact e.g. the Energy Saving Trust at www.energysavingtrust.org.uk or on 0800 512 012 the greenhouse, then developed seedlings will be ready for planting out in the spring. Serious gardeners hedge their bets by having a dual approach with both indoor and outdoor plantings. Best started indoors are leeks, lettuces, onions, peas, radishes etc. Other jobs for February, weather permitting are digging, turning compost heaps, spreading both compost and manure on the garden, chitting potatoes, winter pruning of fruit trees, and cutting back autumn fruiting raspberry canes. If all else fails and the weather continues like December retire to the house and fireside and wait for better conditions. Stuart Williams

The Outdoor Shop Paul and Julie have always been an active family. As well as walking in lovely Bewdley countryside they have owned a team of Huskies and organised husky racing in the forest, and also do mountain biking and climbing. When Paul was made redundant, like anyone else in this position they had to think pretty hard what they wanted to do. They decided to turn it into an opportunity and following a family tradition go into outdoor retailing. Because of their huskies, they went for Wolfskin products with their doggy pawprint logo. Next they had to find premises. That was a long hard job and as many will have seen they have already moved once! That’s because they needed more space, and now they are much better placed. Now there is somewhere to put the bikes and their equipment as well as all the hiking and skiing things. They have just had their first birthday and a lot has happened. Now Paul has another job so that they have taken on more help in the shop. The dreadful weather just before Christmas brought many people into their shop for coldweather clothes and extra Christmas presents. “We have been cheered by all the support we have had from Bewdley people.” said Paul. “Now we’re looking forward to plenty more birthdays!”

Hello from Cassidy. Well I’ve loved all this snow. Mum’s been calling me her little snow plough. I love eating snow! My latest news is that I have a crush now! He’s a bit older than me and a Rottweiler but I love him! His mummy Jane works in town too and we have been out walking a few times. I dance around and we play. Then when I’m too tired he sits next to me while I have a rest. He’s very protective. Sadly I lost one of my cat siblings this Christmas. I’m still looking for her, but I am not missing all the scratched noses I used to get when I poked her when she was asleep! Here’s looking forward to a fun filled spring! Lots of love Cassidy

Letters to the Editor Dear Bridge, After dipping into my copy of 'Birds Britannica' (Mark Cocker, Richard Mabey) one evening I was intrigued to read about a connection between white-tailed eagles, other name sea eagles, and our very own neck of the woods. There are only two types of eagles that inhabit these isles, the sea eagle and the golden eagle. The golden eagle prefers upland habitats, but the white-tailed eagle was once a bird that would breed in woodland areas, especially if they were by major rivers. From research into place names, there is evidence to suggest that white-tailed eagles were once living in this area, the village name of Areley being derived from the old English name for 'eagle wood'. Obviously this was all a very long time ago, and white-tailed eagles have had to be reintroduced into this country from Norway and are slowly restablishing themselves. But what a thought, might it be that one day a wild eagle could be soaring in the sky above the river Severn. Teresa Kiteley

An Anniversary As this New Year comes in, we see many wonders have come with it. New drugs have been discovered, that may be able to help or cure fatal diseases. There is new technology to help us with our daily lives and new discoveries every day. All these things are a cause for celebration. Another cause for celebration is that 30 years ago, Hornbeam House was built. Within Hornbeam are a number of well appointed flats. They are managed extremely well by Debbie and other very able warders who made it their duty to visit all residents every day. They made sure we are well and short of nothing. Those people who chose to make Hornbeam their home in the latter part of their lives may also find new friends and activities. We are in fact a league of friends, who try to help one another where possible. Many of us have found new interests and indeed, a new lease of life! We all know we are safe and cared for and that help is close at hand if needed. Yes, I am glad to be here and part of this wonderful New Year! Dudley Farnol Benton

Tails of a Veterinary Practice – life at Riverside Vets as seen by Gavin the practice cat.

wonder if it would be greedy to send all three a little something. Don’t say anything, but I am also planning to give some extra cuddles to my humans at the vets. They have all been very good so far this year and I am being given my cuddles on demand as is only right and proper for a cat. Hopefully they will keep it up all year. I did hear mention the other day that I might be due my annual vaccination to keep me healthy. I’m hoping if I’m good I might get an extra treat on that day; fish is my favourite if any of my humans ask. Got to go now as it’s time for my afternoon snooze. Gavin

Now that February is approaching, I have been thinking about whom to send a valentine to. As many of you will have heard I spent my Christmas with three lovely lady cats at the house of Jayne; one of my humans. The fabulous felines in question are named Dilys, Mary and Doris. Of them all I think Dilys is my favourite friend, but I don’t want to upset the others and Mary is very beautiful. I

The Veg Must Get Through! Do you remember the awful driving conditions in December’s Great Freeze? While the rest of Bewdley was fighting their way through the traffic at that time, I didn’t have that problem. You see, I leave Bewdley at 2.30am to get to Birmingham for about 3.00am and in spite of having to drive very carefully I was driving on empty roads, apart from the odd gritting lorry. That makes a lot of difference! Surprisingly there wasn’t much difficulty in obtaining my supplies for the shop. Fish supplies were the main problem. The fishermen were catching the fish in Scotland but the roads were impassable so they couldn’t get their catch to market. Many of my vegetables come from Ombersley. The farmer had dug most of his root vegetables and put them in store, so I could get plenty of carrots, parsnips and beetroot. Sprouts were mostly all right, but there had been three acres of cauliflowers lost to the arctic temperatures. So when you all came down to my shop for your veg, you now know that a lot of effort had gone into making sure Bewdley got its 5-a-day! Tony, Bewdley Farm Shop

VAT is a mystery to one in five Lack of awareness over VAT and the New Year debt hangover . Almost a fifth of the population don’t know what VAT stands for, let alone understand how to budget for the new VAT rise, according to a survey conducted by national charity Citizens Advice. The VAT rate increased to 20 per cent on New Year’s Day but, alarmingly, before it came into force one in eight people were not aware that the rate of VAT was set to rise. Nearly a fifth of people surveyed could not identify the current rate of VAT. “This January could be worse than most for those who are not planning ahead as the 20 per cent VAT increase will put more pressure on budgets and could increase the pain of any debt hangover” says the Citizens Advice Bureau. “At this time of year we urge people to consider their spending ROCK PATHFINDERS

If you have got into difficulties, get advice as soon as you can from your local Citizens Advice Bureau - the advice is free , non judgemental and completely confidential (see contact details below). Luckily more than half of us say that they do budget for December and January to make sure they don’t overspend. The savviest budgeters are younger than people might think with those aged 24-35 the most likely age group to keep on top of their Yuletide and New Year spend. However, it is women who will be worrying about their cash more than their male counterparts, 44 % of whom claim they will not be cutting back at all. TOWN COUNCIL NEWS

TOWN COUNCIL MEETING HELD ON 4th JANUARY 2011 Town Council Budget The Town Council agreed its budget for the next financial year and in so doing set the level of Council Tax that will be levied upon householders. The Council has managed to control its spending so as to come within budget of late and therefore mindful of the current economic climate, Councillors felt that it was only fair that there should be no increase in Council Tax for services provided by the Town Council in the coming year. At present the charge for an average Band D household is £21.52 and that figure will therefore remain unchanged for what is the second year in succession. Police Consultation Councillors have a very good working relationship with Sgt Chris Aimes and his Local Policing Team in Bewdley and appreciate the work they do. However, the Police Authority still have regular consultation events to discuss police priorities and therefore it was agreed that two Councillors should attend such a meeting at the Police HQ at Hindlip. Blackstone Meadows Riverside Park Councillors welcomed news from the County Council’s Countryside Service that they intended to make improvements to the car park at the Riverside Park (on the west side of the river accessed from the “switchback” road) and to upgrade the footpath link into Bewdley town centre. Work on this project should be completed very soon. St George’s Hall At the meeting of the Council’s Planning Committee, it was agreed to support proposals for redevelopment of St George’s Hall. This will involve the demolition of the 1970s extension opposite the Library and its replacement by a building of similar size but using space much more efficiently. The main hall will also be substantially refurbished and include a café and so make it more attractive to users and community groups. Access to Bewdley from Wribbenhall in times of flood Councillors discussed the lack of any provision by way of a raised walkway to enable pedestrians from Wribbenhall to access the bridge into Bewdley should the river rise above the 5 metre flood mark making the journey along Beales Corner otherwise impassable. They agreed that representations should be made to the County and District Councils and to the Environment Agency. Future Town Council meetings held at The Guildhall are: Future Town Council meetings held at The Guildhall on Mondays (except where indicated) at 7.30pm are: 7th February, 7th March, 4th April and 3rd May (Tuesday). The Annual Town Meeting (of the electorate) will take place on Monday 18th April Minutes of Town Council and Planning Committee Meetings are on the Notice Boards outside the Mayor’s Parlour, in the Guildhall Entrance and Load Street Car Park. They are also available at the Library and at the Town Clerk’s Office and on the Town Council’s page of www.bewdley.org.uk TOWN COUNCIL NEWS IS PRODUCED AND PUBLISHED BY BEWDLEY TOWN COUNCIL

Februar y in the forest Every winter it is payback time for part of the forest. The crops of trees, be they oaks, larch, Scots pine, or beech are thinned out once or twice before the final harvesting of the fully-grown trees. Last November the best quality oak, destined to become furniture, reached a record price – an encouragement for the Wyre Forestry Commission team and something to put in the “income” column. (We must try to keep the wolves from the door!) There will be a race against time this month to finish current felling and thinning programmes before the bird nesting season begins. In spite of the mess I can assure you that damage to the environment is kept to a minimum but this can be a problem in some areas of the forest that have no good access tracks. Rather than churn up the ground with heavy vehicles (the “forwarders” that take timber from where it is felled to the track or roadside) Natural England will be using an older method to move the timber in part of their forest estate.

Doug Joiner, a horse logger from Herefordshire who has brought his horse Ella to Wyre for the last three Autumn Festivals, will be sending her and 4 equine friends to work with a trained team extracting the timber from Horsehill Coppice, on the eastern side of the forest.

There will be very little damage to the vegetation and soil and the habitat will recover quickly with woodland flowers flourishing in the lighter conditions. There are other benefits too. Imagine the peaceful scene of horse loggers working in the woods, the jangle of the harness, the commands of the men, the powerful grace of the horses. Then imagine the alternative. Health Walks continue every Tuesday and Sunday, meeting at the Visitor Centre at 10.30 for a 11am start. The walks are free, led by trained leaders, and are especially for those who wish to improve their fitness – perhaps after illness. They are very sociable occasions too and have a large following. Forest Friends meet at 10am each Thursday in term time for an hour of forest activities for pre-school children and their carers. Meet at the Visitor Centre. £2 per child. Activities for families and children will be run by Discovery Centre staff from 10.30am to 12noon on the Tuesday and Friday of the halfterm holiday, costing £3.50 per child. Please ring 01299 266929 for more information and to make bookings. Linda Iles, Forestry Commission
