Our Tourist Information Centre is top
In the Steps of Thomas Telford
As you walked across the bridge during November, you might have noticed someone working on the bridge parapet. It was Derek Martin, who has, not for the first time, been repairing the damage done by drivers colliding with it. The stone Derek uses comes from Stoke on Trent, and is white tearne hollington sandstone. Each of the pillars has to be individually carved, a job that can take up to three days of work. Then they are secured in place and hand finished. Next time you cross the bridge, take a moment to admire Derek’s handiwork. But drive carefully!
2009 begins on a high note for Bewdley as the top Tourist Information Centre in the West Midlands region. We collected this wonderful award at the tourism ‘Oscars’ in November last year and now go forward to the National finals in April. The trophy is a beautiful piece of Wedgwood china especially commissioned for the event, and this unique piece of English design and craftsmanship will have pride of place in our display cabinet for a long time to come.
The staff here are all aware of how lucky we are to represent such a lovely part of the country, and we have no doubt that it is the abundance of attractions in the area that makes our job enjoyable and fuels the enthusiasm that has been recognized by this award.
Encouraging excellence in all aspects of tourism is of real importance to our economy and the publicity surrounding the Tourism Awards helps to focus attention on this part of Worcestershire. With more people taking short breaks in England rather than holidays abroad, we go forward into the New Year with confidence that the whole community will benefit from the Tourist Information Centre’s success. Bewdley Tourist Information Centre Load Street. Open every day 12.00 noon to 4pm. Tel: 01299 404740 www.visitiworcestershire.org

Editorial
The Bridge is the community voice of Bewdley. It is delivered free monthly to more than 4,600 homes
Janus: the Roman god with two faces; one to look back and one to look forward. Gary, our photo editor, has given us some memories of last year, and some of our contributors have turned their attention to the future. I expect that some of us look with trepidation as the financial crisis tightens its grip. We’re hoping to start a page of money-saving tips that might have even greater value in being at the same time, carbon-saving tips. Do send us your own favourites; I’ll merely say, “Pressure cooker” as my favourite economy. Now over to you!
Some people have other reasons to look forward with trepidation. For them, work – or the lack of it – may be a source of anxiety. There can even be the trepidation of leaving the world of work for ever, as “New OAP” tells us. Another chance for you to chip in with suggestions.
And finally, a new start for Bridge delivery. For years we have taken for granted the fact that The Bridge gets through most of Bewdley and Wribbenhall’s letterboxes each month come rain or shine, thanks to the people who give so generously of their time. Now at last we are trying to make the job easier for all concerned, and here’s how you can help. Firstly, let us know of any gaps in our delivery. Secondly, volunteer to help out. Just delivering a few magazines takes the weight off the very large deliveries some people do. And thirdly, if you are one of nature’s well-organised people, there is the one-off job of sorting out the paperwork – lists of streets and people to cover them. Please - offers of help to editorial@bewdleybridge.org.uk
A happy New Year to our readers and deliverers from your (disorganised) editor and Bridge team!

Community News Let’s begin 2009’s series of From the Pulpit with a joke…
From The Pulpit
It’s New Year’s Eve. A nun gets into a taxi and asks the driver to be dropped off at the local Holiday Inn.
As they’re travelling, the taxi driver says, ‘I’ve always wanted to kiss a nun. I don’t suppose I could have an early New Year present ? The Nun giggles and said, ‘Well if you are single and a Christian then I suppose it’s possible… ’
So the taxi stops and they both climb out. The nun gives the taxi driver a very long kiss which leaves the taxi driver gasping for air. They get back into the taxi and they continue the journey, but the taxi driver starts to sob. ‘What’s the matter ?’ asks the nun.
‘I’m really sorry’, says the taxi driver,’ but I’ve got to confess that I didn’t tell you the whole truth. You see, I’m not a single Christian. I’m Jewish and married.’ ‘That’s alright’ says the Nun, ‘my name’s Kevin and I’m going to fancy dress party.’
It’s a story that made me smile but also reminded me that whatever 2009 has in store for me, like the Taxi Driver, I won’t always get what I want.
That might sound obvious but living in a culture which prizes ‘choice’ in so many areas of life, we can easily assume that we are meant to get what we want in life. But reality will say otherwise. ‘Events’ and ‘circumstances’ will rudely interrupt our lives from time to time and when that happens we will need words to sustain and that have passed through the fires of suffering and loss and emerged the other side of death itself. Jesus dealt in those sorts of truths. In Mark’s Gospel Jesus says ‘Heaven and earth will pass away but my words will never pass away.’ He never promises that we will get what we want – he does offer words and truths that we will need, which is good news for me, you and desperate taxi drivers everywhere.

Sam, Jamie & Myself hope you all had a great Christmas and we wish you all a happy and prosperous new year. Our farmer in Bromsgrove informs us that business is thriving and he will continue to supply us with beef and lamb. Sam will be visiting the farm again shortly to see the stock and check the quality, conformity and conditions of the animals. We have three pig suppliers – all from Worcestershire and poultry is bought from Leominster. We do this to ensure almost everything we sell is from local farmers and also so we can visit regularly to keep an eye on the quality of our stock. “How did I start?” the editor asked. “At the bottom” was my reply and that is literally how it began. Every day after school I would work in my local greengrocers in Wordsley, breaking up boxes and sweeping the floor. Finally..! I was promoted and given the ultimate privilege – serving the customers. Upon leaving school I had a choice to make- should I go to art college or did I want a full time job in the shop? I chose the shop and as they say the rest is history…….. Soon after the owner of the shop was forced to sell and I found myself about to be unemployed. I was told a ‘chap’ in Bewdley was looking for some help and that’s how I came to Bewdley. The ‘chap’ in question was Alan Evans and I spent an enjoyable 18 months working for him. He then told me he was planning to retire and put the shop up for sale. By now I had decided this was what I wanted to do and many sleepless nights later (and the heartbreaking decision to sell my brand new mini) I made Alan an offer for the shop.

How not to succeed in business .... without really trying Stan Lewis
In the last two issues of the Bridge you have become acquainted with sections of my business life. Over the next issues I shall be writing up certain extracts that may help you in your business life. started at Brintons Ltd. at the age of fourteen and was placed on the Postal Desk where my immediate boss was Ben, in his early twenties. Opposite the postal desk was a large partially glass fronted office form which emerged a series of clicking noises all day long. Late that afternoon on my first day, Ben emerged staggering under a load of papers which he was carrying. Espying me sat on my own at the postal desk he dumped them in front of me saying, “Here’s a job you can do. Take the carbons out and tear the rest in two.” When Ben returned pieces of scrap paper were strewn all over the desks but I had managed to make a neat pile of the carbons. When Ben espied my work I thought he was about to collapse. It was then that I learned that the clicking noises were from typewriters and that many ladies had spent all day on the paperwork which were called invoices lightly joined at the top and in three different colours according to their different destinations. Ben immediately rousted up my other companions and we were all employed in trying to match up the hundreds of scattered pieces of paper. The entire postal team never left the office until after 9pm. that night. Ben’s last words addressed to my companions. “Be very careful what you say to this B in the future.” Advice: Make sure your superiors in business speak, and understand the same English language as yourself .
Bewdley Open Studios
The third annual Bewdley Open Studios event is planned for the weekend of June 13-14th, 2009, and we are keen to enrol local artists as participants. Registration has started and will be complete early in the new year. The event is under the aegis of The Friends of Bewdley Museum and the museum itself acts as a hub with an exhibition of artists’ works in the Wyre Forest Gallery running from June 6th to 21st. Artists show their work in their homes, gardens, studios or at arranged venues (this year we hope to provide more of these at the museum itself). Work is for sale and 10% commission goes to Friends of Bewdley Museum. Artists who would like to join or who seek further information should contact Tony Zalin on 01299 400335 or by email: samzalin@samzalin.freeserve.co.uk.

Clows Top Smokery opens in time for Christmas
A welcome edition to the Deli in time for the Christmas period was Clows Top Smokery hot smoked salmon. This is simply smoked as a whole fish over oak chippings, nothing added, no preservatives. The product is one of many being produced by the newly opened Smokery. Simon Haynes, who left the busy world of car dealerships, to set up this new venture is trying all sorts of produce from venison to tomatoes. Smoked garlic cloves will soon be available in the deli. If it moves up and around Clows Top at the moment it gets smoked. Drew down at the Mug House is also venturing into the smoked salmon business again; a great addition to Bewdley. You never know: we might be able to do our own food fayre soon! Final quote

Improving your general well-being - Nutrition
Phil, Bewdley Deli
Hi, my name is Phil Oliver. I have been a Personal Trainer for over 13 years, and have taught many different types of training programmes to many different age groups, and fitness abilities. Also, as a Personal Nutrition Coach, I have advised several hundreds of people on how to lose fat, to increase energy levels, to have better concentration, and to generally feel healthy and well, just by eating the right foods at the right time.
I am going to write each month to give you some tips to improve your general well-being, starting with nutrition at that difficult post-Christmas time when we have all over-indulged!
Keeping your blood sugar levels balanced is probably the most important factor in maintaining your energy levels, but also in controlling and losing weight. Flags and Taxes.
A British man was talking to his American friend the other day and was explaining the colours of the national flag. ‘Our flag symbolizes our feelings about taxes’.
‘We get red when we talk about tax, white when we receive our tax bill and blue after we pay them’.
‘That’s the same with us’, the American said, ‘only we see stars too’.
On a more serious note if you make donations to a registered charity be sure to

You move to a new area and you have a new job to settle in to, a new home to find and perhaps schools to sort out for the kids. Once the initial hard work is over, you then start to think about how to meet people and build a social circle. Or perhaps you have been in the area for a long time but would like to expand your horizons? If you’re interested in coming along to a couple of evenings so see if you like it, give one of us a ring. If you like, we can even arrange for a couple of us to meet you in a pub for an informal chat. We are a relaxed bunch and welcome all sorts - just as long as you enjoy social occasions and would like to be able to put something back in to the community a couple of times a year. We look forward to hearing from you.

Community News Dear readers,
There are 15 days to Christmas and the festive spirit has yet to envelope me. The ladies of Bewdley police station have nagged and cajoled remorselessly for a tree and decorations since late November. Did they get one? What do you think? No fairy lights though; the vision of turning up one morning to the smoking shell of the police station is too much even for fluttering eyelashes to dispel.
The Christmas lights festival was very well organised and drew many positive comments from the large crowd who attended to see ‘Santa’ switch on the lights, despite the cold. And they weren’t disappointed, for this year all the lights came on, and stayed on (well, for about a week or so anyway)!
Do something positive
Bewdley probably has more events and parades each year than most other towns. There are a number of small groups and organisations that drive these things, or seek to improve some aspect of life in the town. The police, by invitation, support many of them, in either an advisory capacity or by active involvement. What is notable is the relatively small number of people who constitute these groups; the same faces are seen time after time. Their frustration is quite understandable when their efforts are criticised by others who contribute absolutely nothing themselves.
Towns are for people: all people of all ages. The Georgian buildings, Telford’s bridge, the river, count for nothing if there is no life, no soul in Bewdley. If you are not happy with things then do something positive about it. Youth Pact
In November the first Youth PACT took place at The Bewdley School & 6th Form Centre, with 10 students aged from 12 to 16 presenting issues raised by their peers. Their overwhelming desire was to dispel the negative stereotype that all young people are rude, aggressive and out to cause trouble. That perception is about as accurate as saying that everyone past middle age is miserable and grumpy (whoever would think that?). You will be able to read an article from the students elsewhere in this issue. Adrian Hewitt
This month sees the retirement of PC Adrian Hewitt, one of the old stalwarts. Ade came to Bewdley in 1986 as Town Beat Officer, a role now taken over by our CSO’s. Apart from the last 18 months as Licensing Officer, Ade has remained faithful to the town. He was previously a police motorcyclist and still likes to think of himself as a bit of a wild thing; no milk in his coffee, that sort of thing. Our wish is that he draws more from the pension than he paid into it. I will close by wishing you all good luck for 2009. I think some may need it!

A Bellring’s Life Part 5
While St Anne’s bells were at Loughborough, ringing friends at other local towers welcomed us to ring with them.
After a few months I had the pleasure of collecting the bells, frame and fittings from the foundry with an articulated lorry I was able to borrow from H.C. Styles of Bewdley (my place of work). As I drove over the river bridge into Load Street, with ringers and crane waiting to lift the bells back into the tower, I felt that all the hard work we had undertaken had been well worth every minute.
Arthur Berry from Malvern had fitted the new frame into the new belfry (which was the old clock room ) whilst the bells were away. Also, we were indebted to John Slater and Jim Wheeler, both from Worcester, for their help in re-hanging the refurbished bells and fittings. John Slater had previously worked at the Whitechapel bell foundry, so his skills were valuable and much appreciated. All the ringers worked again to help with this final stage of the work. January in the Forest
Last month saw the first trees being planted under Grow With Wyre’s traditional orchard regeneration scheme: one of many work programmes designed to breathe new life into the area.
Funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, Grantscape and Sita Trust, landowners and managers are able to receive advice, funding and practical help with their orchards.
The target for the scheme is to restore over 15 orchards using local varieties of cherry, apple, pear, plum and damsons. Birthday Orchard
Hill area of Bewdley where once acres of fruit trees provided a good income for small farms adjacent to the forest. Most of the orchards went unmanaged after World War II and many of the remaining trees are dying and falling apart. Ironically the recognition of their value for rare invertebrates such as the Noble Chafer beetle which live on dead wood helped to save them. Now new trees will join the old and their place in the local landscape is safe for another 80 years or more. Make the most of our wonderful countryside
With this good news in mind I’d like to encourage you to get out and make the most of our wonderful countryside. The Forestry Commission has several regular events which will help you to explore the forest. Health Walks
At the Frank Chapman Centre in Bewdley children from Sandwell schools planted 20 apple and pear trees to create a birthday orchard 80 years after the Centre was founded to provide the Borough’s youngsters with “a taste of the country”. An old tree label found in the woods identified Allington Pippin as one of the original varieties planted and other tree varieties such as Lord Hindlip and Yellow Ingestrie have a local connection.
The trees have also been chosen for the outstanding flavour of their fruit – an important factor if they are to go down well with the Centre’s young residents!
Planting has also been going on in the Tanners
Our regular Health Walks continue to meet at the Visitor Centre on Tuesdays or Sundays – come at 10.30am to register before the 11am walk. These walks are led by volunteers and there is no charge. As soon as the school term starts Forest Friends will be meeting at 10am each Thursday for an hour of forest activities for pre-school children and their carers and Walk in the Woods is an opportunity for adults to see features of seasonal interest on the first Wednesday of each month, meeting at the Visitor Centre at 10.30am.
The 2009 events programme is full of walks, children’s holiday activities and courses in the Wyre Forest and Cannock – pick up yours from the Wyre Forest Visitor Centre, local libraries or Tourist Information centre or ring 01299 266929 to find out what’s on.

Friends of Bewdley Museum
The Journey Continues
As we enter another New Year it is often a chance for reflection. One of the biggest developments began quietly in November behind closed doors when work began inside the museum grounds with funds made possible by our National Heritage Lottery successful bid for £480,000. This win would not have been achievable without the continued support of the town of Bewdley, without the activities of our Friends and volunteers and most importantly the continued visits of over 90,000 people each year. So what next? We are currently working on a scheme to enhance and revitalise the area at the museum entrance, under the Guild hall. This is a valuable space for the town and requires modern lighting to make it more usable. Everything will be done in accordance
Community News
with the listed planning consents and we are very keen to hear from anyone who might be interested in helping us with funding for the project or who may wish to use it in the future. It would be good to give the area a name – one suggestion is “The UnderGuild” – any more ideas? Please let us know. Our schedule for next year also includes the return of the Bewdley Open Studios, a Friends Exhibition featuring the history of pubs in Bewdley, Music in the Gardens, more brass rubbing, opening the Air raid shelter and a reworking of the Wyre Forest Gallery. We welcome volunteers and helpers so please help yourself to become part of our lovely town of Bewdley – we would love to meet you and there is always plenty to do! So let’s pause to celebrate our achievements up to 2008, but I intend to start 2009 in top gear and I hope that you will join us to continue this fantastic and enjoyable journey. Penny Griffiths

Could you be a media youth champion?
Bewdley youngsters are looking for a media “youth champion” to promote their successes and counter negative perceptions about young people in the Press and on television. The issue was discussed by students at Bewdley School and Sixth Form Centre at the first Youth PACT (Partners and Communities Together) meeting held on 26 November.
Sergeant Chris Aimes, who attended, said the students complained that there was a perception of young people who were seen as anti social and aggressive as a result of negative stereotyping in the media and on TV.
Youth Champion
To counter balance that it was decided that they would approach local newspapers in a bid to identify a “youth champion” to highlight some of the good work being done by young people for the community.
Two other priorities established at the meeting were problems experienced by young teenagers who felt too intimated to use local parks because of the presence of older youths; and a general lack of youth provision in the town.
Community News
Sergeant Aimes said that as a result warden patrols at local parks were being stepped up by Wyre Forest Community Housing. On the issue of facilities the students were informed that it was hoped the planned youth café in Load Street would be open by the New Year.
These priorities were also brought to the full Bewdley PACT meeting held at the school on Wednesday, December 3.
Sgt Aimes said the Youth PACT meeting had been organised by the Local Policing Team in conjunction with the Head of the Sixth Form, Paul Ramage. It was attended by Bewdley PACT panel members and ten students representing the five year groups at the school.
He added: “The students really impressed the panel with the way they presented their issues and argued them through and the meeting was viewed by all as very positive and encouraging.”
It is now planned to hold a Youth PACT meeting towards the end of each term to which representatives from Bewdley’s primary schools will also be invited.
The Bridge would welcome contributions from younger people - email us editorial@bewdleybridge.org.uk
Dear Residents of Bewdley Youth cafe As you may have seen work has at last started - it is not going to be an easy job but I am sure when it is complete it will have been a worthwhile one. We had hoped the Cafe would be open for Christmas. Sadly, this will not be possible, but we’ll make every effort to be open early in the New Year. My Trustees would at this stage like to thank Mark, Matt and all their colleagues at the Community Housing Group together with Bob Millinchip for all their efforts and help - we also would like to wish you all (especially the Young People) a very Happy New Year. Derek Killingworth, Chair of Trustees

Schools starting the year in artistic style
Wyre Forest schools are starting the New Year in artistic style. Craft workers and Education Officers at Bewdley Museum will be creating special pieces of art work to celebrate the museum’s re-opening in May following refurbishment. The work will range from mosaics, to willow sculpture and be showcased in the museum’s new temporary gallery. Monica Rees, education officer said “we are delighted that the schools are getting involved with these art projects as it means that whilst we are closed it will let schools know that we are still promoting the Education Service through outreach.” When the school visit season begins several new programmes will be on offer. Further Living History sessions covering the Celts and the Vikings will be available as well as new programmes introducing The Gunpowder Plot, The Armada and The Great Fire of London. With the Severn Valley Railway linked ‘Blitz and Evacuation’ as the most popular choice, it should be another great year for staff and pupils alike.

A. Got my new bus pass today. I can go anywhere I like for nothing. B. No, only the U.K. A. You know what I mean. B. Give me a car any day. ‘so convenient. A. True. But oddly enough, I’m quite enjoying travelling by bus. The 291 ‘s the most friendly. They all seem to know each other, and they’re always having a laugh. You’d be surprised who you meet. B. Bet you weren’t “’aving a laugh” yesterday, with all that rain. A. I must admit, I was tempted to use the car; but I’m still smarting from that huge bill for servicing it. B. If you want convenience you’ve got to pay for it.
A. I admit catching a bus is by no means ideal, but what’s wrong with getting wet? I saw all you “car owners” the other day in that downpour. All parked so close to the school entrance to pick up their offsprings, so’s they wouldn’t get wet, that no-one could get through. It was pandemonium. B. I took my kids in the car when they were young. Did them no harm. Wouldn’t have got to school on time, if I didn’t. A. Make ‘em walk, I say. What’s wrong with a little rain now and then? (cough, couch!) B. Bad cough you’ve got there
